Abstract:
In my thesis I focus on providing a foundation of data on whichdecision makers can base refactoring decisions. For this, I examine therelationship between software complexity and maintenance eort. Tomake the data a stronger basis for refactoring decisions, I present anew approach of correlating le metrics to maintenance eort, whereI look at the relation between changes in le metrics over multiplereleases and changes in the maintenance eort spent on these les. Ido this using a broadened and, more complete notion of maintenanceeort. I measure maintenance eort in 4 ways: the amount of lines ofcode that had to be changed to resolve tasks, the amount of discus-sion that tasks generated, the amount of atomic changes to a le thatwere required to resolve a task, and the amount of bugs per month. To test this framework, I extracted data from 3 open source projects, where I measured the variation of both complexity and maintenanceeort, using this new notion of eort, over multiple releases, and in-vestigated their correlation. I found that 21 of the tested metrics weresignicantly correlated to the eort measures, where complexity basedmetrics and incoming propagation cost show the highest correlation.Of the proposed measures for maintenance eort, the amount of dis-cussion to resolve an issue shows the highest correlation to the chosenmetrics.

Gonzalez, Marco A. "A new change propagation metric to assess software evolvability." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/44607.

Full text
Abstract:
The development of software-intensive systems faces many challenges; one of the most important from an economic perspective is to reduce their maintenance costs. This thesis proposes a modified change propagation metric as a tool to assist the analysis of evolvability and maintainability of a software system and to ultimately support the reduction of its maintenance cost. The technical complexity of software systems has a great impact on their ability to make increased functionality and adaptability to the environment possible. One approach to understand and master the complexity of large software systems, varying from thousands to millions of lines of source code, is through software architecture. This study examines a sample of software systems from the dependencies of their static structural view. The dependencies and their importance are expressed as a design structure matrix (DSM) that is used as an indicator to reflect the strength of dependence and connection among the different modules. In this thesis, we propose a “modified change propagation” metric as a set of incremental improvements over the original Propagation Cost (PC) metric proposed by MacCormack (2008). Our improved metric uses dependencies weighted with strength to convey more information about the incidence of strongly connected relationships and it discounts weak dependencies. Moreover the original propagation metrics considered that the system should be acyclical; but we found that in practice a very few real systems are exempt of cycles. Furthermore, if cyclic dependencies are heavy rather than weak then these cycles should be treated differently. Finally, our metric is normalized to minimize the effect of both change in the total depth of the dependency graph, and increases in the size of the code. Our modified change propagation metric can help software designers assess the maintainability of a software system at design time and over a proposed release sequence by comparing change propagation measures for different designs of software architecture. For instance, after refactoring. We validated our metric both on a system developed at UBC, and on several large open-source repositories for which we were able to obtain long release histories.

Abstract:

Testing plays a very important role for assuring the quality of developed software. In a modern vehicle, more and more of the functionality is controlled by software and the complexity of the software always increases. The expectations on automating the testing process are to save time and to reach an even higher quality.

In this thesis, which was performed at ZF Friedrichshafen AG, a new tool for automated tests is studied. The tool is used for software in the loop simulation based system tests. The user specifies which outputs that shall be observed and which inputs that can be controlled. Based on these prerequisites, test cases are generated.

It has been studied how to apply the tool, how the test case generation can be influenced, on which systems it successfully could be used and which results that could be reached with the tool. The tool has been evaluated on the hand of two real-life examples; the software of an automatic transmission and of a pressure controller, a module of this software. It was found that there are many interesting possibilities to apply the tool in order to support the present testing process.

Information and communication technologies and their innovative apparatuses have extensive social consequences. The basic interest of this thesis is to argue whether the information technologies and their technological apparatuses have the power to breach in the current capitalist system and therefore to lead us into a transformation towards an alternative world. In fact, this study more specifically attempts to argue and make sense out of this argument on the basis of an analysis of the Free Software Movement (FSM), since it is a product of the information technologies and has some suggestions for such a transformation towards a new society. Simultaneously, the study also argues the novel parts of the FSM as a new social movement and change agent of today'

Abstract:
This project was responsible for developing the Virtual Manuscript Room Collaborative Research Environment (VMR CRE), which offers a facility for the critical editing workflow from raw data collection, through processing, to publication, within an open and online collaborative framework for the Institut für Neutestamentliche Textforschung (INTF) and their global partners while editing the Editio Critica Maior (ECM)-- the paramount critical edition of the Greek New Testament which analyses over 5600 Greek witnesses and includes a comprehensive apparatus of chosen manuscripts, weighted by quotations and early translations. Additionally, this project produced the first digital edition of the ECM. This case study, transitioning the workflow at the INTF to an online collaborative research environment, seeks to convey successful methods and lessons learned through describing a professional software engineer’s foray into the world of academic digital humanities. It compares development roles and practices in the software industry with the academic environment and offers insights to how this software engineer found a software team therein, suggests how a fledgling online community can successfully achieve critical mass, provides an outsider’s perspective on what a digital critical scholarly edition might be, and hopes to offer useful software, datasets, and a thriving online community for manuscript researchers.

Hunt, Robert D. "New software-based fault tolerance methods for high performance computing." Thesis, University of Bristol, 2015. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.683389.

Abstract:
As computer systems become ever more powerful and parallel, processing larger and larger sets of data, there is increased need for ensuring that scientific software applications are tolerant to faults in both hardware and software. New algorithms which take advantage of knowledge about the structure and calculation of important mathematical problems would enable increasingly more efficient and fault tolerant computation to be performed with minimal overhead. This thesis demonstrates how improvements to two important application areas in High Performance Computing (HP C) - that of Monte Carlo methods and Sparse Linear Algebra - can result in software with greater fault tolerance alongside low overheads. It proposes models that employ variations on existing techniques dealing with layout topologies in grids and a form of Error-Correcting Code (ECC) to provide an increased degree of fault tolerance in calculations. The models make efficient use of the variations to produce schemes that are both robust and based on straightforward approaches which can be implemented in a simple manner. The theory behind the models is developed and evaluated and basic implementations are created to gauge the performance and viability of the schemes. Both models perform well in the majority of cases with low overheads in the range of 0-10%, and both are eminently scalable. Furthermore, the methods with highest overhead in the Sparse Linear Algebra schemes are found to increase in performance for larger data sets that are more sparse - those that would require the extra protection afforded by software fault tolerance the most.

Abstract:
Abstract Entrepreneurship research is a dynamic field in development. It has long ago moved past analyzing the differences between entrepreneurs and non-entrepreneurs to trying to understand the activity that an entrepreneur does. Current entrepreneurship research has identified business opportunities and their development as the main focus of entrepreneurship research field. However the creation of new business opportunities is largely not understood and theory which builds on entrepreneurship is still in its initial phases. This study aims to understand the creation of new ventures through a holistic approach, not focusing only on the entrepreneur but also on the industry and society where the venture creation happens. Therefore this study focuses on new venture creation in a software business context. This context was chosen because the economy is moving from a production based economy to a knowledge based economy and software plays a vital role in this change. The research question set forth in this study is: How are new ventures created in the software industry? This study identifies culture, society and entrepreneur as components and actualisation, socialisation and emergence as the processes that affect new venture creation. These components and processes are derived from existing literature of entrepreneurship. Based on these components and processes a research framework is created which is used as the study approaches venture creation through process and case study logics. As a result of this study a model of venture creation in software business was created. The model shows how the dynamic formation of new ventures happens. The model of venture creation identifies components, processes and generative mechanisms of which the latter create the real dynamism in the model. The study showed how entrepreneurs and the creation of new business were tightly integrated into the environment in which the entrepreneurs resided and the people with whom they interacted. The study also showed that venture creation and the development of an entrepreneurial identity do not happen overnight. Rather, they take time to develop, and happen in an evolutionary way
Tutkimuskysymyksenä tutkimuksessa on: Miten uusia liiketoimintoja luodaan ohjelmistoteollisuudessa? Tutkimuksessa kulttuuri, yhteiskunta ja yrittäjä tunnistetaan liiketoiminnan luomiseen vaikuttaviksi komponenteiksi ja toteutuminen, sosialisaatio ja syntyminen liiketoiminnan luomiseen vaikuttaviksi prosesseiksi. Nämä komponentit ja prosessit johdettiin aikaisemmasta tutkimuksesta. Näiden komponenttien ja prosessien pohjalta luotiin tutkimuskehikko, jonka avulla tutkimusaineistoa lähestytään prosessi- ja tapaustutkimuksen keinoin. Tutkimuksen tuloksena luodaan ohjelmistoteollisuuteen uuden liiketoiminnan luomisen malli. Malli näyttää miten dynaaminen uuden liiketoiminnan luominen tapahtuu.

Abstract:
Context: Academic researchers publish their results of new and advanced scientific knowledge (often in close collaboration with industry) in academic journals and conferences. However, it is not know to what extent this information reaches the practitioners. So far this has not been investigated. This information will help researchers in the dissemination process of their research findings. Objectives: In this study we investigate which types of knowledge dissemination forums exist in software engineering, how frequent and aware they are to software practitioners and how useful they find it in improving their professional activities. Methods: We conducted a survey of software practitioners posted on LinkedIn, Yahoo, Facebook, Google+, Meetup and Google groups. The survey contained demographics information, seven types of forums for obtaining scientific knowledge and how important respondents felt these forums improve their professional activities. Results: The results of the survey indicate that Book Publishers, Blogs, Video Tutorial and Social Media are considerable forums of sharing new and advance scientific knowledge for software practitioners. Whilst, IT magazines, scientific journals and meetings are suggested to be less considered forums in gaining new and advanced scientific knowledge. Conclusions: We conclude that academic researchers could improve the exposure of their research findings by presenting their results not only in journals and meetings. But also in new forums where they can represent results in the form of videos, blogs or social media. This exposes their research findings to a larger audience of software practitioners.

The validation of this approach is demonstrated through a set of questions that are asked by developers and managers during the execution of a project and have been identified in various works in the literature. We show how these questions were translated into SPARQL queries and how this work can answer the questions that are not answered or are partially answered in other tools.

Software defects (colloquially known as "bugs") have a major impact on the market acceptance and profitability of computer systems. Sun Microsystems markets both hardware and software for a wide variety of customer needs. The integration of hardware and software is a key core capability for Sun. Minimizing the quantity and impact of software defects on this integration during new product development is essential to execution of a timely and high-quality product. To analyze the effect of software defects on the product development cycle for a midrange computer system, I have used a particular computer platform, the Productl server, as a case study. The objective of this work was to use Sun's extensive database of software defects as a source for data-mining in order to draw conclusions about the types of software defects that tend to occur during new product development and early production ramp. I also interviewed key players on the Productl development team for more insight into the causes and impacts of software defects for this platform. Some of the major themes that resulted from this study include: The impact of defects is not necessarily proportional to their quantity. Some types of defects have a much higher cost to fix due to customer impact, time needed to fix, or the wide distribution of the software in which they are embedded. Software Requirements need to be vetted extensively before production of new code. This is especially critical for platform-specific requirements. The confluence of new features, new software structure and new hardware can lead to a greater density of software defects. The higher number of defects associated with the new System Controller code supports this conclusion. Current Limitations of Defect Data Mining: Automated extraction
(cont.) of information is most efficient when it can be applied to numbers and short text strings. However, the evaluation of software defects for root cause cannot be easily summarized in a few words or numbers. Therefore, an intelligent classification methodology for root causes of software defects, to be included in Sun's defect database, would be extremely useful to increase the utility of the database for institutional learning. Software Defect Data Mining seems to be underutilized at Sun. I have barely touched the surface of the information that can be extracted from our "BugDB" defect database. This data resource is rich with history. We should extract and analyze this type of data frequently.

Pursuit of innovation projects with the absent of a methodology to follow hampers the development of the software product as its complexity grows since the freedom of its own advancement is confused with the lack of order on it. Traditional and agile methodologies do not adapt to this kind of projects therefore, in this paper we aim to design a model that incorporates characteristics of both of them to get a solution of a need found in society. In this study, we focus on the construction of a mobile application that answer to the lack of a system that integrates pharmaceutical products from different establishment through the appliance of usability concept with the UCD (User centered design) approach. In this case we only detail about four of the seven stages proposed in the model developed with its techniques, tools and activities conducted. Results obtained show that the model proposed achieve the expectative and its use is not limited to just mobile applications but to any kind of software project.

Abstract:

Estimating the duration of software development projects is a difficult task. There are many factors that can derail software projects. However, estimation forms the fundamental part of planning and costing any project and is therefore very necessary. While several formal estimation methodologies exist, they all exhibit weaknesses in one form or another. The most established methodologies are based on early software development methods and it is questionable as to whether they can still address more modern development methods such as reusable component-based programming. Some researchers believe not and have proposed new methodologies that attempt to achieve this. Thus what is needed is a methodology that takes into account modern component-based development practices and, as a result, provides acceptable accuracy for the software organisation. This dissertation attempts to uniquely satisfy both of these requirements.

In this paper, we proposed a new type of software oriented secure system for direct wireless information transmission. We first present the special functions and requirements, which have to be satisfied during introducing the secure system. Then, we divide the secure system into three stages: normal operating stage, key presetting stage, and key replanting stage. The security, reliability and the computing complexity of this system are analyzed in this paper. Finally, we carried out this secure system by software and proved the availability.

Abstract:
Consumers demand new and innovative personal computing devices every 2 years when their cellular phone service contracts are renewed. Yet, a 2 year development cycle for the concurrent development of both hardware and software is nearly impossible. As more components and features are added to the devices, maintaining this 2 year cycle with current tools will become commensurately harder. This dissertation delves into the feasibility of simplifying the development of such systems by employing heterogeneous systems on a chip in conjunction with a retargetable compiler such as the hybrid computer retargetable compiler (Hy-C). An example of a simple architecture description of sufficient detail for use with a retargetable compiler like Hy-C is provided. As a software engineer with 30 years of experience, I have witnessed numerous system failures. A plethora of software development paradigms and tools have been employed to prevent software errors, but none have been completely successful. Much discussion centers on software development in the military contracting market, as that is my background. The dissertation reviews those tools, as well as some existing retargetable compilers, in an attempt to determine how those errors occurred and how a system like Hy-C could assist in reducing future software errors. In the end, the potential for a simple retargetable solution like Hy-C is shown to be very simple, yet powerful enough to provide a very capable product in a very fast-growing market.

Abstract:
A research group from Luleå University of Technology in Skellefteå is working to create a virtual reality classroom to be used for educational purposes in mining education. In this classroom, a teacher should be able to hold a lesson for their students in an intuitive and pleasant way. In this part of the project I have focused on implementing functionality to the classroom with the help of the game engine Unity. The result is a program where a teacher now can create a virtual classroom that students can connect to. User test have been performed to verify the user-friendliness of the program, which showed, that the classroom was functionable and that it did not cause any feeling of motion sickness, known as cybersickness.

Abstract:
The aim of this Thesis is to introduce a new version of the programming language Formian and to describe the concept of epilanguages. This concept turns Formian into an expandable and modifiable language. Formian is based on formex algebra. Formex algebra is a mathematical system that provides a convenient basis for the solution of problems in data generation and computer grapliics. An overview of the rudiments of formex algebra is included in Chapter 1 together with some elements of the Formian language. This material provides a simple introduction to the scope and usage of formex techniques. A formal definition of Formian is contained in Chapter 2. The author of this Thesis is one of the principal contributors in the creation of this new definition. The main contribution in the Thesis is contained in Chapter 3 where the concept of epilanguages has been introduced. This concept provides a means of supplementing and expanding Formian according to the users requirements. Chapter four provides a number of useful engineering applications utilising an epilanguage. In particular, the problem of data generation for geodesic forms is covered in this chapter. Conclusions and suggestions for future work are given in Chapter 5.

Abstract:
A wide variety of problems in machine learning, including exemplar clustering, document summarization, and sensor placement, can be cast as submodular maximization problems. In many of these applications, the amount of data collected is quite large and it is growing at a very fast pace. For example, the wide deployment of sensors has led to the collection of large amounts of measurements of the physical world. Similarly, medical data and human activity data are being captured and stored at an ever increasing rate and level of detail. This data is often high-dimensional and complex, and it needs to be stored and/or processed in a distributed fashion. Following a recent line of work, we present here parallel algorithms for these problems, and analyze the compromise between quality of the solutions obtained and the amount of computational overhead. On the one hand, we develop strategies for bringing existing algorithms for constrained submodular maximization in the sequential setting to the distributed setting. The algorithms presented achieve constant approximation factors in two rounds, and near optimal approximation ratios in only a constant number of rounds. Our techniques also give a fast sequential algorithm for non-monotone maximization subject to a matroid constraint. On the other hand, for unconstrained submodular maximization, we devise parallel algorithms combining naive random sampling and Double Greedy steps, and investigate how much the quality of the solutions degrades with less coordination.

Full text
Abstract:
Consensus pattern problem (CPP) aims at finding conserved regions, or motifs, in unaligned sequences. This problem is NP-hard under various scoring schemes. To solve this problem for protein sequences more efficiently,a new scoring scheme and a randomized algorithm based on substitution matrix are proposed here. Any practical solutions to a bioinformatics problem must observe twoprinciples: (1) the problem that it solves accurately describes the real problem; in CPP, this requires the scoring scheme be able to distinguisha real motif from background; (2) it provides an efficient algorithmto solve the mathematical problem. A key question in protein motif-finding is how to determine the motif length. One problem in EM algorithms to solve CPP is how to find good startingpoints to reach the global optimum. These two questions were both well addressed under this scoring scheme, which made the randomized algorithm both fast and accurate in practice. A software, COPIA (COnsensus Pattern Identification and Analysis),has been developed implementing this algorithm. Experiments using sequences from the von Willebrand factor (vWF)familyshowed that it worked well on finding multiple motifs and repeats. COPIA's ability to find repeats makes it also useful in illustrating the internal structures of multidomain proteins. Comparative studies using several groups of protein sequences demonstrated that COPIA performed better than the commonly used motif-finding programs.

Abstract:
During the years, several improvements in the study of the physical galaxy properties, such as stellar mass, star formation rate, have been achieved. Nowadays, statistical measurements of galaxy are performed using, for example, the stellar mass function (SMF) and the two-point correlation function (2PCF), at different redshift. Galaxies are indeed biased tracers of underlying matter density field and the 2PCF allows to study the spatial distribution of galaxies and the large scale structure of the Universe, which properties depend on the cosmological model. On the other hand, with the SMF we can infer information about the evolution of galaxies and about their formation channels. Despite all the observational studies that have been conducted, a full and exhaustive theory for the galaxy formation and evolution is far from be reached, due to the multitude of different and competitive processes involved. A common practice to face this issue is to compare observed galaxy properties with the ones obtained for simulated galaxy samples. Many efforts have been done to create even more detailed and larger galaxy catalogues, but the requirement of high computational power or, alternatively, the employment of empirical approximations, makes the realisation of accurate simulations a difficult task to achieve. In this Thesis work we present a new \textit{free software} based on the Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) technique to generate galaxy catalogues populating whatever Dark Matter (DM) haloes catalogue.

Abstract:
Due to technological developments, apps (mobile applications) and web-based applications are now used daily by millions of people worldwide. Accordingly, such applications need to be usable by all groups of users, regardless of individual attributes. Thus, software usability measurement is fundamental metric that needs to be evaluated in order to assess software efficiency, effectiveness, learnability and user satisfaction. Consequently, a new approach is required that both educates software novice developers in software evaluation methods and promotes the use of usability evaluation methods to create usable products. This research devised a development framework and learning tool in order to enhance overall awareness and assessment practice. Furthermore, the research also focuses on Usability Evaluation Methods (UEMs) with the objective of providing novice developers with support when making decisions pertaining to the use of learning resources. The proposed development framework and its associated learning resources is titled dEv (Design Evaluation), and it has been devised in order to address the three key challenges identified in the literature review and reinforce by the studies. These three challenges are: (i) the involvement of users in the initial phases of the development process, (ii) the mindset and perspectives of novice developers with regard to various issues as a result of their lack of UEMs or the provision of too many, and (iii) the general lack of knowledge and awareness concerning the importance and value of UEMs. The learning tool was created in line with investigation studies, feedback and novice developers requirements in the initial stages of the development process. An iterative experimental approach was adapted which incorporated the use of interviews and survey-based questionnaires. It was geared towards analysing the framework, learning tool and their various effects. Two subsequent studies were carried out in order to test the approach adopted and provide insight into its results. The studies also reported on their ability to affect novice developers using assessment methods and also to overcome a number of the difficulties associated with UEM application. This suggested approach is valuable when considering two different contributions: primarily, the integration of software evaluation and software development in the dEv framework, which encourages professionals to evaluate across all phases of the development; secondly, it is able to enhance developer awareness and insight with regard to evaluation techniques and their application.

Abstract:
The investigation of metamorphic processes in the Earth’s crust is integral to understanding the formation and evolution of the Earth. These processes control the preservation potential of the geochronological rock record and give us insight into, amongst others, the pressure and temperature conditions of the Earth’s interior. Further, they control fluid generation and consumption within the crust which influences global geochemical cycles within the lithosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere. This has important implications on the global climate and the creation of conditions conducive to life. The dominant mechanism of change both within and between these systems are compositional changes invoked by processes of mass transfer. Modern quantitative phase equilibrium modelling allows the calculation of the stable phase assemblage of a rock system at equilibrium given its pressure, temperature and bulk chemical composition. However, current software programs have limited functionalities for the sophisticated handling of a changing bulk composition. A new software tool (Rcrust) has been developed that allows the modelling of points in pressure–temperature–bulk composition space in which bulk compositional changes can be passed between points as the system evolves

Abstract:
Groundwater related courses are offered through several colleges at Virginia Tech. These classes enroll a diverse group of students with varied academic backgrounds and educational levels. Though these classes emphasize different aspects of groundwater resources, they lack a unified approach in instructional materials and learning methodologies for knowledge they do share. The goals of this research are to lessen the impact of variable student backgrounds and to better integrate the courses to improve teaching and learning, through the development of a multi-tiered, interdisciplinary website, Groundwater Interactive (GWI). GWI, as an educational technology, employs a variety of interactive multimedia. The primary educational components of the website include interactive and graphical models and quizzes, and a student-authored primer. An implementation strategy based on experiential and cooperative learning models is developed for application of the GWI tool in the classroom. An assessment methodology to evaluate the effectiveness of these new learning methods and techniques was also developed, but was not implemented as part of this work.

Yuce, Bilgiday. "Fault Attacks on Embedded Software: New Directions in Modeling, Design, and Mitigation." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/81824.

Full text
Abstract:
This research investigates an important class of hardware attacks against embedded software, which uses fault injection as a hacking tool. Fault attacks use well-chosen, targeted fault injection combined with clever system response analysis to break the security of a system. In case of a fault attack on embedded software, faults are injected into the underlying processor hardware and their effects are observed in the executed software's output. This introduces an additional difficulty in mitigation of fault attack risk. Designing efficient countermeasures requires first understanding software, instruction-set, and hardware level components of fault attacks, and then, systematically addressing the vulnerabilities at each level. This research first proposes an instruction fault sensitivity model to capture effects of fault injection on embedded software. Based on the instruction fault sensitivity model, a novel fault attack method called MAFIA (Micro-architecture Aware Fault Injection Attack) is also introduced. MAFIA exploits the vulnerabilities in multiple abstraction layers. This enables an adversary to determine best points to attack during the execution as well as pinpoint the desired fault effects. It has been shown that MAFIA breaks the existing countermeasures with significantly fewer fault injections than the traditional fault attacks. Another contribution of the research is a fault attack simulator, MESS (Micro-architectural Embedded System Simulator). MESS enables a user to model hardware, instruction-set, and software level components of fault attacks in a simulation environment. Thus, software designers can use MESS to evaluate their programs against several real-world fault attack scenarios. The final contribution of this research is the fault-attack-resistant FAME (Fault-attack Aware Microprocessor Extensions) processor, which is suited for embedded, constrained systems. FAME combines fault detection in hardware and fault response in software. This allows low-cost, performance-efficient, flexible, and backward-compatible integration of hardware and software techniques to mitigate fault attack risk. FAME has been designed as an architectural concept as well as implemented as a chip prototype. In addition to protection mechanisms, the chip prototype also includes fault injection and analysis features to ease fault attack research. The findings of this research indicate that considering multiple abstraction layers together is essential for efficient fault attacks, countermeasures, and evaluation techniques.

Abstract:
It is widely believed among researchers as well as practitioners that there is a link between new product newness, or innovativeness, and benefits to the firm developing and marketing a product; more innovative products are generally expected to create more profit and growth. However, research findings are conflicting—positive-, negative-, and no-relationship have been reported between product newness and benefits by different researchers. Moreover, most research has been confined to hardware products. Software is a different kind of product. It is marked by low industry entry barrier, low marginal cost of production, intense competition for quick market leadership, subject to increasing rate of return, et al. An ever larger part of investments in new products consist of computer software, software that is used in PCs, control industrial processes and give products like mobile phones, cameras and cars new features. To what extent newness gives benefits in software development is however still un-researched. Thus, the purpose this study was formulated as: To explore effect of newness of new software products on the benefits to the firms. To fulfill this research purpose, first we had to find out “What are the relevant elements of (i) newness, and (ii) benefits of new products” in the context of firms that develop and market computer software products? This part of the study is reported in Part I. In a second step the effect of product newness on benefits was investigated quantitatively. This part of the study is reported in Part II. Part I is based upon semi-structured in-depth interviews of managers responsible for seven new software products in firms from Finland, India, Sweden and the US. Supplementary secondary data were collected from archival sources to write case descriptions of each software product. Within- and cross-case inductive analysis of seven-case database led to identification of relevant elements of newness and benefits. As newness elements, distribution technology, and complementary technological-, and marketing-resources were found to be vital; as benefits element, non-monetary benefits of new products stood out. Part II reports a quantitative study involving 321 Swedish software firms. Data were collected through a Web-survey, using a questionnaire based on findings of Part I, and analyzed through Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Modeling. Findings indicate that marketing fit, and technological familiarity enhance product-level benefits, whereas technological fit, and familiarity enhance firm-level benefits. From the three environmental factors only aggressive marketing practices was found to be of significance. Neither switching costs nor computer mediated transactions was found to have any moderating role on product newness and new product benefits relationship. Overall, this study extends previous research in the area of product newness-new product benefits and fills the gap in the literature (i) by developing grounded measures for operationalizing new product newness and benefits concepts in the context of software product firms, and (ii) by identifying significant elements of new product newness that affect new product benefits. By limiting to a particular industry, this study provides useful findings—for both researches of new product development, and for managers in software firms—such as marketing fit, and technological familiarity enhance product-level benefits, whereas technological fit, and technological familiarity enhance firm-level benefits.

Abstract:
Interoperability is a key property of distributed applications, which is hard to achieve due to the large number of interoperating components and semantic heterogeneity. Distributed Real-Time Systems (RTS) have strict requirements of performance. The interoperability of Distributed RTS components challenges the computer engineering community to fulfill these requirements. These systems are increasingly based on Commercial-Off-The-Shelves (COTS) middlewares for data exchange, which design is implemented to solve the interoperability problem for several context-domain systems and support many distinct computational requirements. As a result, the complexity of these middleware solutions deteriorates the overall system performance, which is unacceptable according to RTS requirements. This work brings a new approach for RTS interoperability, since it is focused on the basic middlewares functionality (distributed computing) for the RTS domain-context. The solution provides a mechanism, named Interoperability Mechanism, designed to substitute the interfaces translations used in actual middleware systems. Hence, the proposed solution includes an open, reusable and standardized Component-based Architectural Reference-Model including the interoperability aspect, named IRMA that delivers specific domain-context interoperability solution eliminating complex middlewares solutions. Therefore, the new approach facilitates the development of an open, reusable, standardized, and interoperable RTS by implementing the IRMA framework. The contribution of the proposed approach is an effective communication process among RTS components that reduces architectural layers, and the development effort due to the formalized Reference-Model design. The IRMA framework is applied in a RTS prototype to test and validate the new approach, providing indications of improvements.

Turner, Christopher David. "State-based testing : a new method for testing object-oriented programs." Thesis, Durham University, 1994. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/5087/.

Full text
Abstract:
State-based testing is a new method for testing object-oriented programs. The information stored in the state of an object is of two kinds: control-information and data-storage. The control-information transitions are modelled as a finite state automaton. Every operation of the class under test is considered as a mapping from starting states to a finishing states dependent upon the parameters passed. The possible parameter values are analysed for significant values which combined with the invocation of an operation can be used to represent stimuli applied to an object under test. State-based testing validates the expected transformations that can occur within a class. Classes are modelled using physical values assigned to the attributes of the class. The range of physical values is reduced by the use of a technique based on equivalence partitioning. This approach has a number of advantages over the conceptual modelling of a class, in particular the ease of manipulation of physical values and the independence of each operation from the other operations provided by an object. The technique when used in conjunction with other techniques provides an adequate level of validation for object-oriented programs. A suite of prototype tools that automate the generation of state-based test cases are outlined. These tools are used in four case studies that are presented as an evaluation of the technique. The code coverage achieved with each case study is analysed for the factors that affect the effectiveness of the state-based test suite. Additionally, errors have been seeded into 2 of the classes to determine the effectiveness of the technique for detecting errors on paths that are executed by the test suite. 92.5% of the errors seeded were detected by the state-based test-suite.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the various impacts of the new revenue recognition accounting standard on software companies. It begins by explaining why the FASB and IASB updated the existing revenue recognition standard and then compares and contrasts the legacy GAAP to the upcoming GAAP standard. It then moves into a detailed analysis of the key changes affecting the software industry, specifically: intellectual property, the elimination of vendor specific objective evidence, and the principal versus agent consideration. Additionally, it examines software as a service in comparison to the historical model of software as a product and how the new standard will impact the direction of the software industry. Finally, it concludes with a discussion of investor considerations and how the standard will impact users of the financial statements. While there is abundant knowledge of the accounting change within the accounting industry, there is less knowledge and almost no quantifiable information for the public, which based on the various changes detailed, will result in a surprising material effect on software company financial statements.
