Abstract:
The research aims at drawing a parallelism between contemporary American and Japanese fiction. Moving from the definition provided by Saskia Sassen of “global city”, the analysis concentrates on the representation of urban space in a selection of novels set in New York and Tōkyō, to underline similarities in subject and themes of contemporary literary expression that are valid in a transnational dimension.

Abstract:
China has been through tremendous changes in the past thirty years. The country not only experienced a drastic transformation in its socioeconomic sphere, but also in its academic field. One of the most notable academic movements is the on-going debate between China’s New Left scholars and the Chinese liberals, which is developing alongside the deepening of reform in the country. The New Left scholars argue that China must design an original development path and to avoid excessive copying from the modernization model in Western countries. They have identified many problems that occurred in the society in recent years, which arguably resulted from the country’s rapid development. This thesis aims to decode the two most prominent perspectives from the New Left scholars – China’s revolutions and its economic reform. To explicate their perspectives, I draw on the studies of New Left scholars such as Wang Hui, Cui Zhiyuan and Gan Yang, as well as a few selected articles from the liberal side of the debate. Through exploring the various publications, this thesis has hopefully demonstrated a coherent clarification of the still-blossoming new intellectual phenomenon. Furthermore, this thesis also aims to alter the stereotypical discrimination against Leftism and its derivatives, as the results have clearly shown that the New Left scholars are not anti-development and in fact, they are calling for no more than an alternative modernization path for the country.

Abstract:
In narratives of the New Left, a number of key events and ideas are often used as symbols for broader movement trends. The Columbia University protests of the spring and summer of 1968 are one such example. Many Columbias examines a variety of autobiographical writings by one-time New leftists, using the protests as a thematic nexus. It examines how the texts coalesce to form a composite narrative of the protests, written by a group of autobiographers involved in the discursive process of creating cultural memories. The first chapter examines the Columbia protests as a broad coalition that brought together seemingly disparate groups into a moment that encapsulated many of the oppositional political trends of the late 19605. The protests were immediately mythologized by a variety of different presses, a process explored in Chapter Two. This examines how they were mapped in different journalistic contexts, including New Journalism, the underground press, and the mainstream press. Subsequently, the Columbia protests have become entrenched within dominant readings of the New Left and the American "1968". Such narratives often t race the rise and fall of SDS as a synecdoche for the New left and, in this way, Columbia is seen to precipitate the emergence of Weather Underground and the destruction of SDS. Accordingly, the events have been read primarily through the memories a few key Columbia SDS leaders who helped found the Weather Underground. Such narratives are explored in Chapter Three, which contextualises a group of participant histories and memoirs written in the 1980s via the Cold War and culture wars. Participants have subsequently been involved in a process of reinstating the idea of Columbia's political and racial diversity. Chapter Four examines how the protests were remapped around the fortieth anniversary in 2008, and how participants helped to complicate an SDS-centric reading of the events, as they were reclaimed by, and for, marginalised groups, particularly African American participants. Exploring similar t hemes, Chapter Five deliberately forgoes chronology to examine the personal relationship between Mark Rudd and Jane Alpert, as represented in a variety of autobiographical texts, which sheds light on how gender affects the memory of Columbia, the New Left and feminism. Primarily concerned with autobiography, memoir and participant history, this thesis contextualises these genres with a number of other cultural forms, including archival material, academic histories of the New left and of the 1960s, cinema, political-essay and journalism, and the reunion as cultural phenomenon, in order to build a rich historiography of the protests that investigates layers of their representation.

AbstractWe revisit AC completion for left-linear term rewrite systems where AC unification is avoided and the normal rewrite relation can be used in order to decide validity questions. To that end, we give a new correctness proof for finite runs and establish a simulation result between the two inference systems known from the literature. Furthermore, we show how left-linear AC completion can be simulated by general AC completion. In particular, this result allows us to switch from the former to the latter at any point during a completion process. Finally, we present experimental results for our implementation of left-linear AC completion in the tool .

Abstract:
This chapter aims to map Russian literary translation in Italy in the twentieth century and to reflect on how politics influenced publishers’ and translators’ choices. The increase of Russian literary translations into Italian is linked to the strong interest Italians had for Russia from the eighteenth century onwards, leading to a reception process unique among European literatures. After the October Revolution, many Russian exiles chose Italy as their second home and tried to propagate their culture there. The most important of these was the poet Viacheslav Ivanov. Thanks to his encouragement, the first rhymed Italian translation of Aleksandr Pushkin’s Evgenii Onegin appeared. After World War II, Russian literature in Italy was identified with the Soviet Union; texts chosen for translation were intended to underline their political-social character. Left-oriented publishing houses, such as Editori Riuniti and Einaudi, focused their interest on the literature of the “Thaw” period and of the Twenties. For Feltrinelli, a small Milanese publishing house specializing in political texts, Soviet literature was a key element of ‘editorial strategy’. Publicity surrounding the 1957 world première publication of Doctor Zhivago, followed by Pasternak’s 1958 Nobel Prize, brought Feltrinelli huge success. In the following two decades the polarization of cultural political issues subsumed discourse on Russian and Soviet literature into academia. From the mid-1980s onwards, Russian literature gradually lost its centrality to Italian translation publishing, overwhelmed by the collapse of the Soviet Union. Thirty years after the end of Communist ideological influence, the initiative to celebrate Dostoevsky’s bicentenary in 2021 (and the many new translations that have appeared to mark it), show how, without Russian literature, Italy’s literary heritage would be irredeemably impoverished.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter discusses the new trend of co-use of words and images in digitally-mediated text as well as its impact on our cognition. The function of the left and right hemispheres of the brain is first reviewed. Next, how images are processed, compared to words, is reviewed. Reading words recruits different neural networks than those of “reading” images. Literacy acquisition changes neuronal pathways in the brain, as evidenced by the research findings of pre-literate and literate subjects. Based on the suggestive evidence, script relativity is revisited and highlighted. Research evidence from the comparison of image processing and word processing as well as the comparison of how literate and illiterate subjects process objects and faces indirectly support script relativity.

Abstract:
AbstractIn 2018 several well-established female Norwegian novelists—Kjersti Annesdatter Skomsvold, Heidi Furre, Inger Bråtveit and Monica Isakstuen—produced fiction with mothers as narrators and protagonists. This chapter explores the issues that their texts address, as well as the narrative strategies they use. Although the novels look quite like popular motherhood memoirs where mothers describe their daily efforts to manage the situation at home, I show that the refined aesthetic texts by these Norwegian authors in fact contain what I call a plea for motherhood. Further, all four novels explore the relationship between writing and mothering. Ultimately, I argue that the novels by Skomsvold, Furre, Bråtveit and Isakstuen need to be read against the background of the situation in Norway, where it is taken for granted that women want a career, but motherhood is generally left without comment. The narrators in the 2018 novels seem motivated not only by the need to defend motherhood against feminist attacks on motherhood but also in resistance against other discourses, including political pro-natalism and literary-critical dismissal of motherhood as a literary subject. By merging fragments, essayistic pieces, memories and reflections, the novels point to a new way of delineating the multi-layered experience of motherhood.

Abstract:
AbstractThe use and design of digital technologies plays an important role in South–South migration, from migrant decision-making, orientation and route planning, to integration into host communities and connecting with those left behind. Digital technologies can be leveraged to increase access to opportunities and rights for migrants, thereby boosting migration’s developmental benefits at the interface between migrants and host communities. Yet structural inequalities in migration contexts mean that access and use are almost always socially contingent, often leading to further inequalities. This chapter outlines key themes from the existing literature on migrant use of digital technologies in the context of South–South migration drawing also on new data generated through the MIDEQ Hub.

Life has three spatial dimensions for everyone, as do the cultures we create. And so it was in the Middle Ages. Historians benefit from writings left behind to prove any of their theses, but that was only a part of it. We shall look back to barns, to the bridges which helped them travel hither and yon, and to the buildings which survive. We shall not neglect the mathematics which was required to keep all these constructions standing. Astronomy was developing too, always something new. With quite a lot of singing and dancing to instruments, perhaps music added a fourth dimension to the common life of ordinary people.

Abstract:
Introduction: Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, a rare clinical entity, is caused by the reactivation of the varicella zoster virus, which results in inflammation of the geniculate ganglion of the facial nerve. Characterized by the triad: ipsilateral facial paralysis, otalgia and herpetic vesicles in the external ear. Due to the broad symptomatology, which encompasses atypical symptoms and present in several other pathologies, it is often underdiagnosed. Case report: A 62-year-old woman admitted to Hospital Evangélico de Londrina due to paresthesia in the left hemiface, associated with vertigo and severe headache. On physical examination, peripheral facial paralysis on the left and vesicles on the palate and left external ear were observed. AVC protocol exams were requested (normal) and liquor was collected (clear, colorless appearance, 92% lymphocytes). New serologies and magnetic resonance imaging of the skull with contrast were requested. Prescribed acyclovir, prednisone, eye drops and ocular occlusion. The patient evolved with maintenance of headache and otalgia. Prednisone was replaced by intravenous dexamethasone, gabapentin and topical lidocaine were added, and other medications were maintained. Non-reactive requested serologies. Analysis of the herpes simplex virus by polymerase chain reaction > 30. In view of the data, a diagnosis of viral meningitis due to herpes associated with Ramsay Hunt syndrome was diagnosed. Maintained treatment, patient evolved with improvement of the condition. Conclusion: Based on the clinical correlation and unfavorable prognosis, the importance of early identification and treatment lies in order to reduce the time of active disease and neural damage, avoiding possible complications.

Abstract:
Abstract The development of mathematical and numerical models of the human heart has become a matter of high relevance in the scientific community because of the difficulty of measuring the properties and performance of the cardiac tissue in vivo, and carrying out experimental tests under different healthy and pathological conditions. Several heart models have been proposed in the literature, but the results still differ from each other. In this paper, a new passive heart model to estimate the elastic behaviour of the left ventricular (LV) cardiac fibres is presented. The model is based on a hybrid approach that combines a theoretical approach to determine the equivalent material properties of each layer of the LV tissue, which represents an advantage with respect to other more elaborated or complex models, and an inverse finite element method (FEM) to determine the volume of the LV internal cavity under loading conditions. The proposed model uses the LV pressure and volume measurements along a real cardiac cycle as loading and target conditions, respectively. The results are analysed in terms of the elastic properties of the cardiac fibres and compared with the results obtained from other more complex and elaborated models reported in the literature. From this analysis it is observed that the new proposed model is reliable and able to estimate the elastic behaviour of the cardiac tissue.

Abstract:
First-year teachers are teachers who are new to teaching. The number of public school teachers is increasing in many countries and areas. Meanwhile, data also showed that some newly qualified teachers anticipated leaving or already left after the first year teaching. The purpose of the study aims to present a review and synthesize literature regarding the challenges of first-year teachers in public primary schools. Peer-reviewed articles (N=30) are collected from Google Scholar via systematically searching key words “first-year teachers” with one or more of the following terms: challenge, difficulty, attrition, leaving, and public primary schools. The results show first-year teachers meet general challenges listed as below: (a) building a professional teacher identity, (b) applying teaching theories in real class practice, and (c) handling the same heavy teaching loads and responsibilities as experienced teachers. In addition, first-year teachers in Shanghai public primary schools also meet the following challenges: (d) not having enough pre-service teaching programs, (e) facing high competition and a workload, and (f) building positive and stable relationships with parents/administrators. Considering by new qualified teachers’ internal motivation and the external challenge they meet, first-year teachers are overwhelmed in dealing with these imbalances.

Abstract:
Abstract In industry and academia, designers and engineers use prototyping at various stages in the design process to evaluate progress, archive process, assess viability, and communicate mental models to a team. Cognitive processes not only play a huge role during the design process, but also have causal relationships with various prototyping strategies. However, these causal relationships are not well understood in the design field. This paper presents a review of design-field literature related to cognitive processes, prototyping strategies, and modeling processes to identify literature consensus, consolidate experimental results, and expose gaps in the literature. After analysis of the literature, Fixation, Team Cognition, Iterative Prototyping, and Rapid Prototyping are the most well researched areas, especially when compared to their effects on cognitive processes. Sunk Cost, Requirement Relaxation, and Expertise are areas that could be better understood. The relationships between relevant cognitive processes, prototyping strategies, and modeling processes are consolidated into a data visualization that invites researchers and novices alike to explore the field of design in a fresh way that could spark new research endeavors or provoke interest in the field. This literature review and analysis reveals trends in design research through a novel approach with an emphasis on cognition, as well as provides a consolidated cannon of work that gives a sense of what has already been done on these topics and what is still left to explore.

"Investigation of the Blood Flow and Mitral-Septal Opposition in the Left Ventricle With the Obstructive Hyperthrophic Cardiomyopathy During Systole Using Fluid-Structure Interaction Technique." Abstract:
In this article, fluid-structure interaction methodology was used to analyze the blood flow and Mitral-Septal opposition in the Left ventricle with the Obstructive Hyperthrophic Cardiomyopathy (OHCM). The geometry of the computational model includes the diseased left ventricle with thickened septum and Mitral valve. A semi-ellipsoidal geometry was developed with the dimensions, extracted from MR images of the diseased left ventricle. Also, the geometry of the Mitral valve was created using anatomical data provided in literature [1]. The three element Windkessel model and atrial pressure [2, 3] were used to introduce mass flow and pressure boundary conditions to the aortic orifice and left atrium respectively. Effect of the fibers was taken into account by varying the Young’s modulus of the mitral valve tissue with circumferential and radial coordinates. The fluid-structure interaction algorithm started at the beginning of the systole (when the mitral valve is fully open with zero stress) by applying the left ventricular pressure on the left ventricular wall and aortic mass flow outlet on the aortic orifice. The Navier-Stokes equations were solved with SIMPLE algorithm and finite volume method to calculate the blood flow inside the diseased left ventricle. The calculated pressure was applied to the surface of the mitral valve and the structural model of the tissue was solved using non-linear finite element. The deformation of the mitral valve was transferred to the blood by moving the fluid mesh. In the next time step, the same procedure was repeated with the new mesh. This algorithm was followed up to the end of the systole. The thickened septum creates a narrow passage for the blood flowing out of the left ventricle, thus a jet of blood flow is developed in this narrow passage which applies high shear stress on the anterior leaflet of the mitral valve. The drag force deforms the anterior leaflet toward the septum, obstructing the blood flow rushing toward the aortic orifice.

Salazar-Salgado, Sara, and Elizabeth Rendón-Vélez. "Displacement of the Residual Limb Within Transfemoral Sockets: A Literature Review." In ASME 2020 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2020-23416.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract According to the World Health Organization and the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics, between 0.5 to 0.8 percent of the global population has suffered limb amputations. In the last years, Colombia, Angola, Afghanistan, and Chechenia are the countries that have held the first places with the highest amount of landmine victims. In Colombia, this weapon has left more than 10.000 affected people, many of which have suffered traumatic lower limb amputation To recover some of the lost function, amputees are generally prescribed with a prosthesis. However, the adaptation of the user with this element depends on the comfort felt when using it and consequently, on the fit between the socket and the residual limb. The fit between these two elements is highly influenced by the relative motion between them (i.e. displacement, slip). Both excess of displacement or complete absence, have several negative consequences for the amputee. Thus, measuring displacement could be an important indicator of the quality of the socket and the suspension system, and could provide critical information to improve surgical interventions, the prescription of prosthetic elements and the design and development of new prosthetic components. Several authors have investigated this topic; however, the studies have been mostly conducted on transtibial amputees. Therefore, this review aims to summarize the gathered information about the displacement between the socket and residual limb in transfemoral amputees. A computer-aided systematic literature search was performed by two independent reviewers using three databases. The selected papers were evaluated with regards to: sample characteristics, displacement measurement instrument, measured activity, displacement axis, surfaces in contact, type of socket and type of suspension system used. Most of the studies were performed on less than five individuals with mature residual limbs and trauma caused amputation. The most common aspects of displacement were: imaging techniques (measurement instrument), gait (measured activity), vertical direction (displacement axis), bone/socket (surfaces in contact), quadrilateral (type of socket) and suction-based (suspension system). The optimal range of motion is still unknown for transfemoral amputees. A marker-based optical tracking system is promising for research purposes, while electronic sensors would be optimal for clinical use. Volume change may be an indirect and, more straightforward option to measure displacement. Further research is needed to determine the effect of using a modified socket, to find a way to measure relative motion inside the socket using marker-based optical tracking systems and to define the influence of subject-specific characteristics in the amount of displacement. A better understanding of what happens inside the socket helps to optimize prosthetic designs and to improve the amputee’s quality of life.

Abstract:
Introduction : Colloid breast carcinoma is a rare variant of invasive ductal carcinoma, representing 1% to 6% of the cases. It is characterized by rich deposition of extracellular mucin upon anatomopathological analysis (AP). In general, it has positive hormone receptors, inclusion in the Luminal A molecular subtype, and an epidemiological profile of older women. Its behavior is usually indolent, associated with a low grade and favourable prognosis. It is unlikely to infiltrate axillary lymph nodes or be associated with metastatic potential. We present a case report of a patient with invasive colloid carcinoma of the breast associated with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and early axillary recurrence of a colloid pattern, contesting the mild behavior that is the gold standard in the literature. Case report: A 63-year-old patient, without relevant risk factors, was admitted due to a palpable nodule in the upper outer quadrant (UOQ) of her left breast (LB). Radiological exams showed a nodular lesion of 15x16x10 mm, heterogeneous and non-circumscribed associated with microcalcifications, with core biopsy showing colloid carcinoma. The axillae were clinically and radiologically negative. She underwent a sentinel lymph node biopsy and lumpectomy. AP results showed invasive colloid carcinoma, grade 2, measuring 1.7 cm, associated with cribiform DCIS occupying 20% of the total area of the neoplasia, free margins and three negative sentinel lymph nodes. Immunohistochemistry was compatible with Luminal A. Treatment with radiotherapy and the use of tamoxifen followed. During follow-up, in July 2020, a physical examination showed thickening in the UOQ and a hardened palpable lymph node on the left. Routine examinations showed a complex nodule compatible with clinical thickening in the UOQ and grouped and heterogeneous microcalcifications in the retroareollar region of the LB, in addition to axillary lymphadenopathy with asymmetric cortical thickening at ipsilateral level I. For better elucidation, breast magnetic resonance imaging was requested, which showed areas suggestive of fibrocicatrial changes and suspicious-looking lymph node enlargement on the left. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) guided by ultrasound was performed, compatible with positivity for atypical cells. Thereby, a new surgical approach was performed: mastectomy and level I axillary node dissection on the left. AP was compatible with 0.6mm DCIS associated with intraductal papilloma without atypia of LB and 1 in 6 lymph nodes, positive for diffuse infiltration by colloid pattern carcinoma. Today, the patient is being followed up, using anastrozole, without oncological changes in other follow-up exams. Cases that deviate from the standard in literature, such as the exposed surprisingly aggressive behavior of a rare variant, should be reported to encourage discussions about adequate approach and treatment.

Abstract:
This working paper advances research on inequality with unique, new data on income distribution in 61 countries, including 20 Latin American countries, to explore the effects of political parties on redistribution. First, consistent with a central, but still contested, assumption of the political economy literature, left-wing governments redistribute more. In addition, consistent with recent research on the importance of party organization and the organizational differences between younger and older parties, older left-wing parties are more likely to internalize the long-run costs of redistribution and to be more credible in their commitment to redistribution, leading them to redistribute less. With entirely different data, the paper also provides evidence on mechanisms: left-wing governments not only redistribute more; they also tax more. Older left-wing parties, though, tax less than younger ones.

Roberts, Tony, and Kevin Hernandez. Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition: A Literature Review and Proposed Conceptual Framework. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), January 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ids.2021.018.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper begins by locating the Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition project (GODAN) in the context of wider debates in the open data movement by first reviewing the literature on open data and open data for agriculture and nutrition (ODAN). The review identifies a number of important gaps and limitations in the existing literature. There has been no independent evaluation of who most benefits or who is being left behind regarding ODAN. There has been no independent evaluation of gender or diversity in ODAN or of the development outcomes or impacts of ODAN. The existing research on ODAN is over-reliant on key open data organisations and open data insiders who produce most of the research. This creates bias in the data and analysis. The authors recommend that these gaps are addressed in future research. The paper contributes a novel conceptual ‘SCOTA’ framework for analysing the barriers to and drivers of open data adoption, which could be readily applied in other domains. Using this framework to review the existing literature highlights the fact that ODAN research and practice has been predominantly supply-side focused on the production of open data. The authors argue that if open data is to ‘leave no one behind’, greater attention now needs to be paid to understanding the demand-side of the equation and the role of intermediaries. The paper argues that there is a compelling need to improve the participation of women, people living with disabilities, and other marginalised groups in all aspects of open data for agriculture and nutrition. The authors see a need for further research and action to enhance the capabilities of marginalised people to make effective use of open data. The paper concludes with the recommendation that an independent strategic review of open data in agriculture and nutrition is overdue. Such a review should encompass the structural factors shaping the process of ODAN; include a focus on the intermediary and demand-side processes; and identify who benefits and who is being left behind.

González Jaramillo, María José, and Juan Hernández. Public Debt Sustainability and Fiscal Reaction Functions in Latin America and the Caribbean. Inter-American Development Bank, January 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0004701.

Full text
Abstract:
The governments response to the COVID-19 pandemic left Latin America and the Caribbean economies with increased levels of sovereign debt as a percentage of output, bringing up the question of debt sustainability in the region. The literature has identified two testable conditions on the fiscal reaction function for debt sustainability: i) a positive response of primary balances to debt (Bohn, 1995) and ii) the response of primary balances to debt should be higher than the growth adjusted interest rate (Ghosh et al., 2013). This paper revisits these conditions, both from the theoretical and empirical perspective. It introduces a new “implicit growth” measure which is the relevant one for the debt-to-GDP ratio dynamics. It also tests empirically both conditions for economies in the region. The results suggest that debt is likely sustainable in the region, although it cannot be assured at a 95 percent confidence level. A deep look at the causes of this results pointed towards fiscal fatigue, the fact that primary balances become less responsive to debt levels the higher the latter are. At post-pandemic debt levels sustainability is far from certain. The results here indicate decisive action is required to ensure debt will fall back to prudent levels.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Laryngeal cancer is relatively uncommon in Ecuador. Usually epithelial in origin, the most frequent histological type is squamous cell carcinoma. The most common mesenchymal tumor is chondrosarcoma. Most laryngeal chondrosarcomas are treated with total laryngectomy, but a conservative function sparing resection is recommended in low-grade limited tumors. Case Report: In a 68-year-old female nonsmoker patient, a small tumor was found in the posterior left aspect of the cricoid cartilage in a computed tomography (CT) performed immediately after an unexpected difficulty to pass the endotracheal tube for a thoracoscopic biopsy of 4 cm tumor of the left lung, in another hospital. The patient underwent, then, an initial tracheostomy, a total thyroidectomy for a goiter and a biopsy of the tumor of the cricoid cartilage whose pathological study was inconclusive. One month later, a low-grade neuroendocrine pulmonary tumor was completed resected. Two years later, a CT scan showed the cricoid lesion with the same characteristics. At endoscopic video laryngoscopy, two subglottic masses that narrowed the airway in approximately 60% of the normal caliber, were observed located at the posterior and left walls. An intraluminal resection was performed through a transcricoid anterior approach. The pathological diagnosis was a low-grade chondrosarcoma. Tracheal decannulation was performed one month later. At an endoscopic video laryngoscopy performed six months post-operatively, the tracheal caliber and mucosa were normal. The patient remained with normal voice and breathing. Conclusion: We report the second case of chondrosarcoma of the larynx in our country, treated by a conservative approach.

Abstract:
People with food allergy must avoid eating the foods they are allergic to as they may react to very small amounts of such foods. Allergenic food left on surfaces or equipment could contaminate another food that is also prepared using the same surface or equipment. Cleaning of surfaces and equipment is therefore one way that businesses try to prevent contamination with food allergens. Food businesses let people know that food could be contaminated with allergens using Precautionary Allergen Labelling (PAL) such as ‘may contain’ statements. Evidence gathered from previous food industry consultations shows that there is uncertainty around the effectiveness of allergen cleaning which is a barrier to effective use of PAL.

Abstract:
Although populism has become a focus of research in the last decade, there hasn’t been much academic work on how militaries around the world have reacted/acted to the rise of populist leaders. There is some timeworn research on the relationship of militaries in Latin America with various left-wing populist governments and leaders from the 1930s to 1970s. Given that populism was largely understood in the context of left-wing politics, with the rise of right-wing populism, the literature on the military and populism needs to be advanced by studying the relationship between right-wing populism and the military. This article aims to address this gap by looking at the right-wing populism case study of Pakistan, where the military has actively participated in the rise of a religious populist leader. To situate the case study within the larger literature of the military and populism, the dynamics and history of military associations with populism and populist leaders are revisited in the article’s first part.
