Hall's Bond Forming Initiation Theory, derived for [2 + 2] systems, was applied to [4 + 2] systems. Polymerizable electron-rich and electron-poor olefins were reacted to obtain evidence for reactive intermediates using polymerization as a trap. A diradical intermediate was successfully trapped in reactions of 1-methoxy-1,3-butadiene with methyl 2,2-dicyanoacrylate, dimethyl cyanofumarate, trimethyl ethylenetricarboxylate, maleic anhydride and acrylonitrile. Diradical intermediates were also trapped in reactions of isoprene, 1,3-butadiene, 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene, cis and trans-piperylene and 2,5-dimethyl-2,4-hexadiene with acrylonitrile. Copolymers were obtained in all cases. Copolymerization was accompanied by [4 + 2] cycloaddition. A zwitterionic intermediate was successfully trapped in the reactions of p-anisyl-1,3-butadiene and 1-phenyl-1,3-butadiene with various leaving groups in the β-position. Homopolymer of the arylbutadiene was obtained in all cases. Polymerization was initiated from a cationic species which arose from the elimination of the leaving group from a zwitterionic hexamethylene species. Polymerization was accompanied by [4 + 2] cycloaddition. Reactions of p-anisyl-1,3-butadiene and 1-phenyl-1,3-butadiene with methyl 2,2-dicyanoacrylate, dimethyl cyanofumarate, trimethyl ethylenetricarboxylate gave only the [4 + 2] cycloadduct. No polymer was formed in this reaction and no evidence for a reactive intermediate was obtained. The BFI theory was also applied to Group Transfer Polymerization reactions to determine whether the reaction mechanism involved a tetramethylene diradical intermediate. No styrene was incorporated into the methyl acrylate polymer, and so no evidence for a radical intermediate was obtained. LUMO energies calculated by AM1 were compared to reduction potential and UV data for tetrasubstituted and trisubstituted electrophilic olefins. The trends exhibited by the calculated LUMO energies agreed well with the experimental data, implying that calculations may be a reasonable method of predicting reactivity.

The evaluation of the dynamic fracture properties with the current impact testing techniques is subject of some controversy, because the crack initiation conditions cannot be established with accuracy. Besides, some of them are limited to low loading velocities and the evaluations are made following a static approach. In consequence, a fundamental study is required with two aims, namely, a development of a new impact testing technique and the analysis of the extension of the fracture mechanics concepts to crack initiation under dynamic loading. These are the objectives of this research project. The impact testing technique proposed is based on the shock tube technique and is capable to test the specimens, which are central cracked circular plates, under static and dynamic conditions. The findings show that the specimens are loaded uniformly with blast waves, which have an initial ramp that increases steadily without oscillations. The magnitude of the load is controllable and reproducible and the fracture analysis should be based on a dynamic calibration. This technique has been applied to the evaluation of the dynamic fracture toughness of PMMA following an experimental-numerical procedure. The crack initiation load and the strain rate were measured experimentally and the fracture toughness was calculated numerically with standard solutions and with numerical calculations of the J-Integral with the finite element code ABAQUS. The problem of crack initiation under pressure load has not been completely solved. Consequently, the significance of the static and dynamic test results was established with the findings of additional experimental and numerical work, which showed that the modulus of elasticity and fracture stress increases with the strain rate, that there is plastic deformation at the crack tip of those specimens tested under static conditions and that the dynamic calculations with ABAQUS involves the interaction of the stress waves with the boundaries. Furthermore, it has to be noticed that the crack tip is under bending stresses. Thus, this test is not a standard plane strain material dynamic test. Finally, conclusions are drawn on the use of the this experimental-numerical technique and its further application.

Aim – To identify any discrepancy between new graduate nurses’ perceptions of their professional roles before they begin practice and what they experience at the initiation of their duties.
Background – Turnover and attrition is a major issue within the nursing profession. Better understanding of new graduate perceptions will provide the opportunity to identify stressors that can be addressed to slow the rate of turnover.
Method – A case study research design was selected for data collection from a population of newly licensed Registered Nurses at the initiation of professional responsibilities.
Evaluation – Survey results were clustered thematically to look for common results among responses.
Implications for Nursing – Identifying discrepancies between expectations and reality can guide nursing leadership and educators to create strategies to better prepare new nurses for practice, reduce stress and anxiety, and limit the amount of turnover and attrition.

Microbial methane from subsurface organic-rich units such as coals and shale support approximately 5% of the United States and Canada's energy needs. In the deep subsurface, microbial methane is formed by the metabolism of primarily CO2, H2, and acetate by methanogens. These metabolites are the by-products of multi-step biodegradation of complex organic matter by microbial consortia. This study investigates microbial methane in the Illinois Basin, which is present in organic-rich shallow glacial sediments (surficial), Pennsylvanian coals (up to 600 m depth), and the Upper Devonian New Albany Shale (up to 900 m depth). Findings from the study show that hydrogeochemical conditions are favorable for methanogenesis in each reservoir, with a decrease in groundwater flushing rates corresponding to a decrease in average reservoir depth and an increase in carbon isotopic fractionation. The deeper reservoirs (coals and shale) were paleopasteurized, necessitating re-inoculation by methanogens. The microbes were likely advectively transported from shallow sediments into the coals and shale, where areas of microbial methanogenesis correlate with freshwater recharge. The recharge in the shale was primarily sourced from paleoprecipitation with minor contributions from glacial meltwater during the Pleistocene (4He ages). All areas sampled in the shale were affected by Pleistocene recharge, however groundwater ages in areas of microbial methanogenesis are younger (average 0.33 Ma) than areas with thermogenic methane (average 1.0 Ma). Estimates of in-situ microbial methane production rates for the shale (10-1000 TCF/Ma) are 104-106 times slower than laboratory rates. Only limited biodegradation is observed in the shale. In-situ stimulation of methane production may be most effective if aimed at increasing production of the supporting microbial consortia as well as methanogens. Trace metal concentrations in the shale are below known levels of inhibition or enhancement, with the exception of Fe, suggesting that microbial methanogenesis is not repressed by any of the measured trace metals and may be improved with the addition of Ag, Co, Cr, Ni, and Zn.

Vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) infection causes inhibition of host protein synthesis, in part by sequestering initiation factors required for mRNA cap recognition. The viral mRNAs share a common mRNA structure to those of the host cell, with a 5' cap and 3' polyadenylate tail, but continue to be efficiently translated despite host translational shutoff. This observation suggests that a non-canonical translation pathway is utilized for viral protein synthesis. To investigate this pathway, we performed an RNA interference screen to identify genes required for VSV replication. In contrast to bulk cellular translation, viral translation is hypersensitive to knockdown of a protein constituent of the 60S ribosomal subunit, rpL40. Depletion of rpL40 diminishes VSV protein synthesis by >90% and is restored through complementation with an siRNA-resistant mutant of rpL40. To delineate the mechanism by which rpL40 is required for viral protein synthesis, we reconstituted translation of VSV mRNA in yeast extracts in vitro. In the absence of rpL40, we show that the two ribosomal subunits fail to associate on VSV mRNA, and the small subunit does not scan to the initiation codon. Regulation by rpL40 occurs in context of the large subunit, providing direct evidence for translational control by the ribosome itself. This rpL40- dependent mechanism of translation initiation is broadly conserved within eukaryotes, governed solely through an RNA determinant, and is utilized by several viruses within the order Mononegavirales. To determine whether a subset of cellular transcripts also require rpL40 for translation, we identified polysome-associated mRNAs in yeast by deep sequencing. We demonstrate that in vitro and in vivo translation of candidate mRNAs, including factors involved in stress responses, are inhibited in the absence of rpL40. This finding suggests that rpL40 plays a critical role in transcript-specific translation during cellular stress. Collectively, our work identifies an alternative translation pathway that is specifically dependent on rpL40, revealing a previously unappreciated mechanism of protein synthesis regulation by the ribosome.

Background: T2DM patients can be treated with both Insulin or/and non-insulin antidiabetic drugs. Biguanide-derivate is the first-line antidiabetic that is cost-effective and safe. DPP-4Is are antidiabetic drugs that can be used to treat old patients and those with kidney failure. While SGLT2-inhibitors and GLP-1analogues can be used by T2DM patients with cardiovascular problems and those with overweight. The initiation of antidiabetic drug is influenced by several factors such as patient characteristic, physician’s knowledge and guidelines. Aim: The aim of this study was to study the type of antidiabetic medication initiated to naïve T2DM patients, how age and sex affect the choice of medication and difference in prescribing between Primary healthcare centers in Region Uppsala. Methods: The study was a cross-sectional based on health record data from Region Uppsala. The study included 2473 T2DM patients that were initiated antidiabetic medication between January 2019 and December 2020. Results: Non-insulins accounted for 88 % and insulins for 21.1% of the prescriptions. The proportion of men that received both insulin and non-insulins were higher than women. The proportion of patients that received insulins was higher for the age group 80 years and older. The proportion of men that received SGLT2- inhibitors was higher than for women, while women received more GLP-1- analogues. There was a variation between PHCs, but non-insulins were mostly prescribed at all PHCs. Conclusions: Initiation of antidiabetic drugs to naïve T2DM patients in region Uppsala fallowed the guidelines. There are some differences in prescription pattern between the two sexes and the age groups.

The impact of subduction initiation on regional to global tectonics and the compositions of major Earth reservoirs are topics of vigorous ongoing research. Here, pristine glasses extracted from ~51.9 Myr old basalts and younger boninites that erupted in the Izu-Bonin Mariana forearc immediately after subduction initiation were analyzed by microbeam techniques, with goals of characterizing the mantle sources and the conditions under which melting occurred to produce nascent arc crust. Forearc basalts (FAB) have relatively differentiated major element compositions. Thus, to determine melting conditions and source compositions, primitive melt compositions were restored through an inferred crystallization history based on melt liquidus associations. Subsequent modeling indicates that they were generated at high temperatures and low pressures relative to a mid ocean ridge basalt (MORB). Incompatible trace element compositions of FAB show that they are similar to MORB in that they were generated largely by decompression melting. Differences in several trace element ratios between MORB and FAB indicate that the mantle sources for FAB were unusually depleted. Differences between FAB sub-units indicate a range of petrogenetic histories. Upper FAB sub-units are weakly enriched in fluid-mobile elements which may indicate that fluids from the subducting Pacific plate contributed to melting. Boninites are separated into high and low silica types based on preexisting whole rock analyses. Glasses separated from these boninites are highly differentiated and thus classify as high-Mg andesites rather than boninites on MgO-SiO2-TiO2 diagrams. These glasses are also enriched in a suite of fluid mobile elements indicating that they are products of flux melting of the mantle involving fluids and melts from the subducting plate. Olivine calcium concentrations are consistent with hydrous parental boninite melts. Aluminum partitioning between olivine and hosted spinel inclusions constrains the temperatures of initial crystallization between 1170 and 1330 degrees Celsius. The change from decompression melting which generated forearc basalts to flux melting which generated high silica boninites illustrates an evolution of the subduction system over the course of the initiation process. Based on trace element ratio plots, mixing relationships between upper forearc basalts and highly enriched fluids probably released by the nascent subducting slab suggest that both decompression melting and fluid fluxing operated to produce low silica boninite during subduction initiation. This melt composition progressively becomes dominated by fluid flux melts with additional components derived from the slab to make high silica boninite. These late volcanic rocks record melting of a highly depleted mantle source. The fact that heavy rare earth element concentrations become increasingly depleted from FAB to low silica boninite to high silica boninite indicates that the mantle source changed in composition over time. The progressive decrease suggests that the initial mantle source for FAB remained the mantle source for the duration of subduction initiation related magmatism.

The Sonya Creek volcanic field (SCVF) contains the oldest in situ magmatic products in the ~29 Ma–modern Wrangell arc (WA) in south-central Alaska. The WA is located within a transition zone between Aleutian subduction to the west and dextral strike-slip tectonics along the Queen Charlotte-Fairweather and Denali-Duke River fault systems to the east. WA magmatism is due to the shallow subduction (11–16°) of the Yakutat microplate. New ⁴⁰Ar/³⁹Ar and U-Pb geochronology of bedrock and modern river sediments shows that SCVF magmatism occurred from ~29–18 Ma. Volcanic units are divided based on field mapping, physical characteristics, geochronology, and new major and trace element geochemistry. A dacite dome yields a ~29 Ma ⁴⁰Ar/³⁹Ar age and was followed by eruptions of basaltic-andesite to dacite lavas and domes (~28–23 Ma Rocker Creek lavas and domes) that record hydrous, subduction-related, calc-alkaline magmatism with an apparent adakite-like component. This was followed by a westward shift to continued subduction-related magmatism without the adakite-like component (e.g., mantle wedge melting), represented by ~23–21 Ma basaltic-andesite to dacite domes and associated diorites (“intermediate domes”). These eruptions were followed by a westward shift in volcanism to anhydrous, transitional, basaltic-andesite to rhyolite lavas of the ~23–18 Ma Sonya Creek shield volcano (Cabin Creek lavas), including a rhyolite ignimbrite unit (~19 Ma Flat Top tuff), recording the influence of local intra-arc extension. The end of SCVF activity was marked by a southward shift in volcanism back to hydrous calc-alkaline lavas at ~22–19 Ma (Young Creek rocks and Border Lavas). SCVF geochemical types are very similar to those from the <5 WA, and no alkaline lavas that characterize the ~18–10 Ma Yukon WA are present. Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf radiogenic isotope data suggest the SCVF data were generated by contamination of a depleted mantle wedge by ~0.2–4% subducted terrigenous sediment, agreeing with geologic evidence from many places along the southern Alaskan margin. Our combined dataset reveals geochemical and spatial transitions through the lifetime of the SCVF, which record changing tectonic processes during the early evolution of the WA. The earliest SCVF phases suggest the initiation of Yakutat microplate subduction. Early SCVF igneous rocks are also chemically similar to hypabyssal intrusive rocks of similar ages that crop out to the west; together these ~29–20 Ma rocks imply that WA initiation occurred over a <100 km belt, ~50–60 km inboard from the modern WA and current loci of arc magmatism that extends from Mt. Drum to Mt. Churchill.

This study examines the custom of circumcision in the context of culture, law and the Constitution. In Chapter 1 the writer considers the pervasive role of culture in the context of the current debate in relation to equality versus culture. In Chapter 2 the writer considers the origin, development and the legal significance of the custom of circumcision in the Eastern Cape. In Chapter 3 the writer traces the circumstances leading to the enactment of the Provincial statute governing circumcision of children. In this chapter the writer also poses the question whether an aspect of morality can effectively be regulated by law. Chapter 4 looks at the question of cultural rights in terms of the Constitution and the possible effect of the promulgation of the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities Act 19 of 2000 on the approach of the courts in respect of constitutional challenges directed at some aspects of customary law. Chapter 5 looks at the custom of circumcision and the need for the protection of children. The writer raises the issue of the role of traditional leaders in the eradication of abuses associated with circumcision. The last Chapter comments on the reasons for the failure of the new Act governing circumcision in the Province.

La synthèse d’ARN messagers résulte d’une cascade d’évènements temporellement et spatialement orchestrée. Au moment de l’initiation de la transcription, divers facteurs tels que les facteurs généraux de transcription, le complexe Médiateur, des co-activateurs, des facteurs de remodelage de la chromatine ainsi que l’ARN polymérase II sont recrutés au niveau de la région promotrice du gène. Certains facteurs de la voie NER de réparation de l’ADN sont également recrutés. En utilisant des cellules de patients porteurs de mutations dans les gènes MED12 (sous-unité du Médiateur) ou XPC (facteur initiant la voie NER), nous avons pu étudier le rôle de ces protéines dans la transcription. Les patients MED12 sont notamment caractérisés par une lourde déficience intellectuelle et des malformations congénitales. Nous avons montré que MED12 est impliqué dans le contrôle de certains gènes de réponse immédiate comme JUN, qui contribue notamment au développent et à la plasticité cérébrale. L’expression de ce dernier est affectée par les mutations de MED12, mais différemment en fonction de la position de la mutation, apportant une possible indication sur l’origine des variations phénotypiques observées chez les patients. En parallèle, les patients XPC se caractérisent par une forte photosensibilité. Nous avons montré que la protéine XPC, en collaboration avec le facteur E2F1, est impliquée dans le recrutement de l’histone acetyl-transférase GCN5 au niveau du promoteur d’un certain nombre de gènes. Cette dernière permet notamment l’a modification de l’environnement chromatinien, en coopération avec le facteur général de transcription TFIIH et participe ainsi à l’initiation de la transcription. En plus d’approfondir la compréhension des mécanismes régissant la transcription, ces résultats ont permis de mieux comprendre l’étiologie des maladies associées aux mutationsThe synthesis of messenger RNA is a highly regulated process. During transcription initiation, a large number of proteins are recruited to gene promoter, including the RNA polymerase II, general transcription factors, co-activators, chromatin remodellers and the Mediator complex. Some DNA repair factors from the NER pathway are also recruited. Using cells derived from patients bearing mutations in either MED12 gene or XPC gene, we studied the roles of such proteins in transcription. MED12 patients are mostly characterised by intellectual disability and developmental delay. We showed that MED12 is implicated in the transcription regulation of immediate early genes like JUN, known for its role in neurological development and neuronal plasticity. JUN expression is markedly altered by MED12 mutations. We also showed that the position of the mutation influences this alteration, bringing possible explanation for inter-patients symptom variability. Meanwhile, XPC patients are mostly characterized by photosensitivity. We showed that XPC protein, which engages one of the NER pathways, is implicated in chromatin post-translational modification. Together with E2F1, it helps the recruitment of GCN5 acetyl-transferase to promoter of a certain set of genes. On the promoter, GCN5 notably cooperates with TFIIH to modify the chromatin environment during transcription initiation. In addition to help the comprehension of the transcription mechanisms, these results bring knew insight into the aetiology of mutations associated diseases

Tension or outright conflict is a recurring theme in relations between Aboriginal communities and non-Aboriginal institutions and bodies in Canada. Additionally, many Aboriginal communities are fraught with internal divisions that prevent their leaders from taking consistent policy stands and negotiating effectively with other parties. These tensions and divisions can hinder the possibility of cooperation and disrupt the processes of problem-solving that are necessary to address many of the concerns of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Canadians. The current policy in Canada to move towards Aboriginal self-governance is likely to increase the frequency and complexity of such disputes. Despite these well-recognized dynamics, there are insufficient mechanisms and resources to address Aboriginal disputes, whether between Aboriginal groups and government, Aboriginal groups and non-governmental, non-Aboriginal parties, or amongst and between Aboriginal groups. A new initiative is proposed in the form of an independent, non-partisan, nonprofit organization devoted to the resolution of Aboriginal public disputes. The organization would work independently and with other organizations to fill the gaps in the field by providing access to professional dispute resolution services and by building capacity amongst Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal stakeholders to resolve such disputes. It would integrate and build on dispute resolution approaches from Western and Aboriginal models. In its startup phase, the organization would maintain a limited focus and engage in a relatively small range of activities. Ultimately, it is envisioned as a national organization, offering a broad range of services, which fundamentally transform the way Aboriginal disputes are addressed in Canada.

The work described in this thesis has been concerned with the preparation of high vinylidene end-group polyisobutene using new initiating systems such as alkoxydifluoroboranes (ROBF2) and alkyldifluoroboranes (RBF2), and their adducts with ethanol and Brønsted acids (water, sulfuric acid, trifluorosulfonic acid, acetic acid and trifluoroacetic acid). In all cases, comparison is made with the currently used initiating system of a 1 : 1 complex of boron trifluoride with ethanol (BF3.EtOH). From nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic studies, n-pentoxydifluoroborane (C5H11OBF2) and methoxydifluoroborane (CH3OBF2) were found to have a trimeric structure in deuteriochloroform, whilst both pentafluorophenoxydifluoroborane (C6F5OBF2) and phenoxydifluoroborane (C6H5OBF2) existed as mixtures of trialkoxyborane [(RO)3B] and boron trifluoride. In most cases, the addition of ethanol or Brønsted acids to alkoxydifluoroboranes led to decomposition of the latter and to the formation of complex mixtures of boron compounds, viz. monofluoroboranes [(RO)2BF], trialkoxyboranes and boron trifluoride. By comparison, acetic acid and trifluoroacetic acid did not decompose methoxydifluoroborane. Both n-butyldifluoroborane (C4H9BF2) and n-pentydifluoroborane (C5H11BF2) showed the same stability when their adducts with ethanol and trifluoroacetic acid were formed. These boron trifluoride derivatives and their adducts were evaluated as initiating systems for the carbocationic polymerisation of isobutene at low temperature with particular reference to their influence on the extent of conversion, molecular weight (Mn) and more importantly, vinylidene content of the resulting polyisobutene. From experimental results, it is evident that BF3.EtOH is a much more reactive initiating system than the adducts of ethanol with alkoxydifluoroboranes, which initiated the polymerisation of isobutene, but only when used in high concentrations, to produce polymers with a high vinylidene content (ca. 88%). Alkyldifluoroboranes, whether used with ethanol or trifluoroacetic acid as an initiator, proved to be inactive co-initiators for the polymerisation of isobutene. Of all the Brønsted acids used as initiators, trifluoroacetic acid produced polyisobutene in high yield when methoxydifluoroborane was used as the co-initiator. The molecular weight of the resulting polymer was found to be within the desired range (Mn 1000-1500) with a concomitant vinylidene end-group content of up to 75% being achieved.

New graduate nurses (NGNs) at bedside are faced with numerous challenges, which prompt them to leave jobs in their first year. The transition from being a student to competent nurse requires a NGN to have the necessary skills and experience. Subsequently, hospitals continue to face shortages of staff because of high turnover and low retention levels. Nonetheless, evidence from reviewed literature has indicated that the use of residency programs can increase NGNs' stay at bedside, improve retention, reduce costs of operations, and return employees' turnover. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to identify the likelihood of NGNs remaining at bedside after participating in a 52 week NGN residency program in the critical care units at Palmetto Health hospital. When a hospital recruits and retains NGNs at the bedside, the quality of life among patients is improved. Benner's theory of novice to expert was utilized to understand professional growth of nurses. Data were collected from the human resource department of the 18 nurses who initially participated in the residency program to compare retention rates before and after its implementation. The project initiative was based on a quantitative non-experimental comparison design. Based on the evidence from the human resource department, there was a 14% improvement in nurse retention 3 months after the implementation of the NGN residency program. A statewide adoption of NGN residency programs was recommended to help improve retention and enhance NGNs' professional improvement and quality of care. The implementation of NGN residency program also demonstrated implications for social change through increasing retention, building nurse competency, and enhancing quality of care delivered.

A partir de sources rassemblées dans la ville de New York, ce travail s'est attaché à analyser l'origine de cette mobilisation et à vérifier dans quelle mesure elle est, oui ou non, facteur de progrès. Si elles s'inscrivent dans la vieille tradition des groupes d'autodéfense, les actions collectives entreprises aujourd'hui dans les quartiers complètent utilement le travail policier tout en se montrant respectueuses des principes démocratiques. Dans les commissariats d'ailleurs, la légitimité de ces nouveaux acteurs du maintien de l'ordre n'est plus guère remise en question et les exemples de coproduction se sont récemment multipliés. Most police precincts, by the way, no longer view community responses to crime as illegitimate and examples of coproduction have recently multiplied. The impact of collective action appears to be mixed though: if volunteer citizens and private security officers have contributed to reduce disorders, street drug trafficking and improve people's perceptions of New York City's streets, efforts are not likely to produce the same results everywhere. This work highlights the key role played by block and neighborhood associations in crime prevention and order maintenance, evaluates the changing mentalities within police organizations and finally reveals how the frontier between the seemingly opposed concepts of " private security " and " public safety " is increasingly becoming blurred

Thesis (DTech (Chemical Engineering))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2017.Explosives are used to achieve certain functions in diverse environments, including mining, civil construction, military operations, and demolition. Irrespective of the application, the basic principle of augmentation of energy applies. Energy in the form of heat and shock is released by an initiator. This energy is taken up by an intermediary charge, which in turn propagates to the main explosive charge. Ultimately the energy released from the main explosive charge performs the functions. Initiating systems make use of this exact principle within their own boundaries of confinement. The rate at which this energy transfer takes place as well as the magnitude of augmentation is to a great extent influenced by parameters such as the type of confinement, chemical composition and density of the explosives, as well as other environmental conditions. Traditionally lead azide has been used as the primary explosive component in an initiating system. Pressure from international environmental agencies has discouraged the use of heavy metals in commercial products. Nano-porous silicon has been used together with an oxidiser to form an explosive mixture. The literature has shown that nano-porous silicon-based explosive formulations are sensitive enough to pick up from the energy released by the pyrotechnic composition. The reaction of such nano-porous silicon explosive compositions changes from a deflagration to a detonation. However, their ability to initiate the base charge of an initiating system has not yet been demonstrated. A nano-porous silicon/nitriminotetrazole-based explosive system was developed and characterised. A relative reactivity concept was developed and successfully used to further characterise the new nano-porous silicon explosive. The lead azide primary explosive replacement has been shown to be sensitive enough to pick up from the heat output generated by the delay composition and strong enough to reliably initiate the base charge explosive. The performance of the base charge explosive is primarily a function of its density and the confinement it is used in. An explosive system was developed whereby the base explosive was coated with a polymer to give it compressible characteristics. A ballistic ball indentation evaluation method was developed and effectively applied to characterise explosive performance behaviour under various conditions, including density and confinement. Explosive pellets, pressed separately and at a higher density, have been shown to increase performance compared with explosives consolidated inside an aluminium casing.

For so long, heritage conservation has been sacrificed for economic development in urban renewal and development. However, the society of Hong Kong began to be aware of the importance of heritage in recent years. The heritage conservation topic has became focus of the society, and a task for the government to deal with carefully. As part of the new conservation policy, the Revitalizing Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme has come to the scene as a possible remedy to the complicated matter by focusing on social values, public engagement and heritage conservation.
The goal of this study is to assess if the Scheme is effective and efficient in handling the dilemma between development and heritage conservation. A project of the Scheme, Tai O Heritage Hotel, is being examined. By overseeing the result of this project, we could determine to what extent this new initiative has achieved in conserving heritage and social benefit. With extensive review on the conservation policy and relevant document, together with the interview result with stakeholders of the project, we could assess if the project is competent enough to make a new way for future development strategy in Hong Kong.
The findings in this research reflect that the new initiative has been able to put more attention to the root cause of heritage conservation problem, such as preserving social values, engaging public participation, incorporating the doctrines of heritage conservation into business running. The Tai O Heritage is viable in operation and could stand a model for later projects. However, it is also noted that even the Government has aimed high in the Scheme, the public participation is still limited. The effort of the Government to put up a conservation policy is never to be minimized as it lines out the future practice of urban development. to a right track and put emphasis on social value, more attention should be put on the public engagement and its future course. The Government is suggested to learn from the result of this project in order to work out a more efficient long term strategy to keep the conservation policy sustainable. Social values, public engagement and heritage conservation should be run out on a balanced base with more practical measures such as education, public-private consolidation and heritage trust.published_or_final_version

This thesis is a policy analysis of the Pharmacy In A New Age (PIANA) initiative launched by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB) in 1995. It leads to an understanding of how pharmacy services develop as a part of the Welfare State. The chosen interpretation was to explore the pharmacy policy sub-system using the Advocacy Coalition Framework (ACF), the Systems Approach and the dimensions of power associated with decision-making. The PIANA initiative identified five areas where pharmacists' input into future healthcare systems would be valued: o the management of prescribed medicines; e the management of long-term conditions; the management of common ailments; the promotion and support of healthy lifestyles; and, advice and support for other healthcare professionals. Research was conducted using both qualitative and quantitative methods to ascertain pharmacists' perceptions towards the implementation of the PIANA initiative. From the interviews it was determined that isolation, remuneration, skill mix and competitive retail environment were factors thought to impede the implementation of new pharmacy services in the community setting. Hypotheses were generated and subsequent questionnaire based research explored pharmacists' views relating to the development of the extended pharmacy services and which organisations were trusted to influence the policy process. The study group comprised 2359 pharmacists living in Great Britain who were registered With the RPSGB on March 12 th 1999. The response rate was 50.1 % (n= 1182). Statistical analysis demonstrated that the management of prescribed medicines was ranked most important role and that pharmacists employed in GP surgeries were thought best placed to carry out this role. The author suggests that clinicallytrained pharmacists based in GP surgeries would be best placed to manage prescribed medicines. Community pharmacists ranked the management of common ailments as their second most important role and were perceived to be best located by all pharmacists. Hospital ranked the advice and support of health care professionals as the second most important; community pharmacists ranked this as the fifth most important. The conclusionsd raw on the literaturea ssociatedw ith implementationT. he author considers that the methods employed, were appropriate to analyse the pharmacy policy process. The analysis identified that the RPSGB was unable to unilaterally influence the policy process and that the plethora of pharmacy organisationsm ay be detrimentatl o policy implementationT. he authorc oncludes that local leadersw ho are associatedw ith severalp harmacyo rganisationsfu rther compromise the situation. Employees of Primary Care Organisations were found to possess the triple dimensions of power associated with decision-making and are key policy brokers for emerging pharmacy services. Future policy implementation research should focus upon this group. The majority of pharmacists were unable to identify a legitimate organisation to support the local implementation of pharmacists' non-dispensing roles, this may impede the implementation process. The majority of pharmacists agreed that they would have to change the skills that they used in order to survive. Educators and trainers should ensure that pharmacists develop competencies to the expected professional standards required to develop and deliver new roles. 16

This thesis is a study of Parties as an outflow of societal changes where the aim has been to find out how parties are affected by societal changes and how they justify to new party formation. This is done by using a theory called Parties as an outflow of societal changes which is a theory developed by Swedish researchers in Political Science. To confirm the theory it is necessary to do an argumentation analysis of one external developed party’s electoral program. In this case the party selected is Feminist Initiative which brings a different view on how the society of Sweden should look like. Selected parts of the argumentative analysis will be examined with the purpose to give a perspective on how Feminist Initiative values the changes in society and how they describe their role as a new party. The main question of this study is; Are new parties an outflow of societal changes? The basic arguments includes that along with societal changes in Western Europe also changes the view of a representative democracy in which political parties play a central role. It is clear that societies have changed in different ways with the rampage of the globalization. Media’s role in the political realm has also increased and influences more in society. In the case of Sweden political parties have raised with different ideals, goals and visions of how Swedish society should look like. The result should confirm the thesis that changes in society contributes to party formation.

The landmark inauguration of the East African Cooperation (EAC) on 14 March 1996 brought to the fore some key issues regarding regional economic integration in East Africa, particularly since it signalled the second attempt by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania to form a regional economic bloc. The EAC's predecessor, the East African Community, had collapsed in 1977 in acrimonious circumstances. Prominent among the issues that led to the collapse of the East African Community was the perception of unequal gains from the integration scheme, with Uganda and Tanzania considering that disproportionate benefits were accruing to Kenya at their expense. With the new initiative, the question emerges as to whether the problems that caused the collapse of the Community will not beset the EAC and subject it to a similar fate. In an attempt to address this question, this study considers some of the theoretical issues relating to regional economic integration among countries at different levels of development, and attempts to provide an analysis of the new initiative of the EAC in the light of this theory and the history of the East African Community. The study also critically examines the objectives of the EAC and the integration strategy adopted by the three countries, and offers suggestions on the way forward. Among the arguments made in this thesis are that, contrary to the suggestions of orthodox static analysis, if the dynamic effects of integration are considered, then there may be important gains which may accrue to integrating states in the developing country context. It is also argued that different levels of development among integrating states need not necessarily be an impediment to economic integration. The study finds that, in spite of the enormous challenges facing the EAC, member states may be better off within the integration scheme than if they acted as individual units in a rapidly globalizing international system.

This thesis seeks to answer the question of the origin of some of the most fundamental additions made to early Christian baptism. Christian baptism began in a relatively simple liturgical form, but became, by the fourth century, a much more dramatic set of initiation rituals. Among the added elements to baptism were washing ceremonies in the nude, physical anointing with oil, being marked or signed with the cross on the forehead, and receiving white garments. Scholars have proposed different theories as to the origins of these baptismal rituals. Some claim the elements existed in the New Testament practice of the rite. Others have supposed that the Christian church adopted the elements from either the Jewish synagogue or from contemporary pagan modes of initiation. This thesis argues that the initiation rituals of the Israelite tabernacle and temple provide a much more likely source for the added elements of Christian baptism. The esoteric practices of the temple priests became the esoteric tradition of early Christianity. The rites of this temple-oriented esoteric tradition in both the Old and New Testaments parallel, and may have been the origin for, the evolutions made to Christian baptism during the third and fourth centuries of the church. Christian groups such as the Valentinians provide evidence of higher esoteric rites being interpreted as baptism. Somehow the esoteric rites of the Israelite temple and the esoteric rites of early Christianity were adopted into the practice of Christian baptism.

For some years now, Indian Universities and Colleges have been deprived of access to journals and other professional literature. About two decades ago, University libraries were able to subscribe to a decent number of journals in various subjects. The subscriptions have steadily eroded since funds available to universities have not been able to cover the rising cost of the literature, and today access to journals is all but impossible, except from a handful of major university libraries. It is clear that this trend cannot be reversed in the conventional fashion by providing increased funding.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recently undertaken a major new initiative called the UGC-INFONET, which seeks to provide high speed internet connections, electronic access to professional literature, and the development of multimedia content to supplement conventional learning and teaching. In the present paper we describe the part of this project which deals with the provision of electronic access to journals and other literature for the University sector.
Major organizations like the CSIR, DAE, AICTE etc have set up consortia involving institutes under the aegis of the respective department to have electronic access. The arrangement here involves incremental payments to be made to publishers to supplement an already large print subscription base. This arrangement is not possible for the Universities, since the present subscription base is very poor, and therefore arrangements which involve electronic subscriptions only are being made with publishers.
In our paper we will discuss details about the initiative, the novel aspects of the programme, the great benefits that it will bring to the University sector, its present and future relationship with other consortia, and the role of INFLIBNET in the planning and long term implementation of the scheme.

The PhD research is concerned with how EU procurement regulation impacts upon the procurement process for Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects. The process followed to award the contract and to set the terms of the agreement in the procurement of a PPP project (invariably highly sophisticated arrangements) is crucial for value for money. Prior to 2004 the process was regulated by EU legislation designed in the 1970s, which failed to adequately cater for modem procurement methods, like PPPs. Thus new legislation in 2004 introduced a new procedure for these projects: competitive dialogue. However, commentators have identified possible problems with competitive dialogue and there are numerous legal grey areas. The research examines the way in which the new legal framework for competitive dialogue is applied to PPPs in the UK, and actors' perceptions of the framework. It seeks to identify perceived positive aspects of competitive dialogue in facilitating best practice; perceived problems, including any legal uncertainty and constraints on best practice; strategies to conduct the process within the constraints; and the factors that influence compliance and approach to legal risk. The research adopts a socio-Iegal approach, combining analysis of the legal rules, with a study of the literature on theories of regulation and enforcement, and qualitative interviews with legal advisors, procurement officers, and policymakers.

Using the results of postal surveys of teachers and trainees as well as case studies the provision for the Youth Training Scheme (YTS) during 1983/4 made by a representative sample of Further Education colleges is examined. The policy intentions of governmental and quasi-government bodies are placed in their political context, focussing on the curricular policies of the Manpower Services Commission (MSC) and the Further Education Unit (FEU). The policy of the government and the MSC to change the image of youth training measures from that of a short-term social support measures (current under the Youth Opportunities Programme) to one of a permanent national training scheme is judged to have had a large measure of success. YTS in the year concerned was integrated with existing examination and apprenticeship structures. However, a streaming process according to educational level is identified, whereby lower stream trainees on college based courses receive a student-centred curriculum to a greater degree than trainees on employer based YTS courses. The influence of the FEU, struggling to preserve a liberal educational philosophy in vocational preparation, is judged to have more relevance for the (minority) lower stream courses. It is suggested that if the FEU wishes to extend its influence to the rest of YTS it will have to examine how its educational philosophy may be reconciled with the teaching style associated with traditional examination courses in FE, which have generally been adapted for YTS by teachers. The views of trainees lend justification to the MSC policy of promoting work-based learning, since trainees bring to YTS a perspective that places great value on experiences that seem like, or may lead to, real work. However, several aspects of MSC policy designed to promote work-based learning are judged to have failed, and an examination of employers' provision is recommended.

The phenomenon of World English has made English the lingua franca of international business and trade. This thesis explores how English has spread, and to what extent it has changed. It also considers how local knowledge and concerns about identity can be dealt with while teaching students to use English towards a global perspective. Relevant pedagogical principles are then identified and applied to the production of teaching materials that fit within the context and parameters of an academic English course at Lingnan University in Hong Kong, China. Research is conducted to determine whether an approach of using film clips and role plays can initiate competence in intercultural communication while satisfying the academic writing objectives that were set by Lingnan University.

In 2014, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced his commitment to provide free public pre-kindergarten (pre-K) to all of New York City’s four-year-olds. With “Pre-K for All,” New York City has undertaken the most ambitious pre-K expansion in the country. The Division of Early Childhood (DECE) in the New York City Department of Education is responsible for implementing Pre-K for All. Now in its second year of expansion, the DECE has shifted its focus from infrastructure development to quality improvement and sustainability.
In my Residency, I worked to develop a quality improvement mechanism called the “Foundational Support Visit” (FSV), a new process for diagnosing need across every Pre-K for All program. The DECE used findings from the FSV to inform the allocation of coaching supports to all pre-K programs. As part of the FSV initiative, I worked closely with the Division’s 125 Early Childhood Social Workers, the DECE’s largest team of school-based support staff and one of two teams responsible for conducting Foundational Support Visits at Pre-K for All programs.
In my Capstone, I describe the evolution of the Foundational Support Visit, from design to implementation, and analyze how the process impacted Social Workers’ perception of their evolving role during Pre-K for All’s expansion. I explore the question of how a growing organization can support people on the ground to adapt to be effective during a period of rapid change and argue that the FSV process generated important losses for the DECE’s Social Workers.
I describe my efforts, as a developing leader, to restore Social Workers’ confidence in their value through the creation of a feedback mechanism and a monthly working group meeting. In my analysis of my own leadership, I consider my initial struggle to diagnose the losses at stake for the DECE’s Social Workers, and I explore how leaders can approach organizational change in a way that acknowledges loss and helps people adapt to new environments. I conclude with a series of implications for my own leadership, for the DECE, and finally, for the education sector.

The research examines New Labour’s Third Way policies and the impact New Deal for Communities (NDC) regeneration programme had on participation in health care. This longitudinal study (1998-2007) explores participatory joint working, welfare state, social capacity, health inequalities, citizen involvement and community capacity. It captures the experiences of local community and front-line workers whilst delivering the Health Focus Group (HFG) in the NDC programme. Using action learning reflection techniques, the study analyses a purposeful sample of 15 from the local community, front-line workers, and strategic respondents involved in the NDC health programme. The research demonstrated the NDC did increase participation, joint working and involvement of local actors 1998–2003. The importance of communication, leadership and relationships was recognised as an important catalyst for developing community governance models. The new action learning spaces initiated, designed and delivered 19 new models of joint local clinical, community and complementary health and well-being projects.
In 2001, New Labour introduced public private finance initiatives with the Primary Care Trust (PCT) which conflicted with the local actors’ involvement in the participatory joint decision-making. The reconfiguration of health and social care services and the new public health models introduced complex governance and monitoring models, further distancing the local actors from the process. Strategic staff changes in key governance positions also adversely affected the communication and trust established with local actors. The research concluded operational, tactical, and strategic alignment is necessary to maximise joint participation in decision-making.

This thesis is divided into two main parts. The first, comprising the three initial chapters, looks, in chapter one, at the specifically German origins of the Bildungsroman, its distinctive features, and the difficulties surrounding its transplantation into the literary contexts of other countries. Particular attention is paid to the ethical dimension of the genre, i.e. to the relation between the individual self and the exterior world, and how it affects individual formation. The focus then shifts to American literature, and the term 'narrative of initiation' is recommended as a credible alternative to 'Bildungsroman'. Allowing for similarities between them, it is none the less strongly suggested that the Bildungsroman of German origin and the American narrative of initiation should be seen as being intrinsically different, principally because of the different cultural backgrounds that shaped them. Several features of the theme of initiation are postulated as decisive factors in the discrepancies between the initiatory narrative and the Bildungsroman. Analysis of six texts - three of each literary tradition - follows, to provide support for the theoretical discussion of the terms introduced in chapter one. Three Bildungsromane are considered in the second chapter, namely Goethe's Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre, Stifter's Der Nachsommer and Keller's Der grune Heinrich, and three narratives of initiation in chapter three: Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Crane's The Red Badge of Courage and Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio. Their relevance to the tradition of German and American fiction as a whole and as precursors of Mann's Der Zauberberg and Hemingway's The Nick Adams Stories is considered. A direct comparison between Mann's and Hemingway's texts constitutes the second part of this thesis, wholly contained in chapter four. In addition to a comprehensive critical reading of both narratives, the contemporaneity of Der Zauberberg and The Nick Adams Stories is taken into account, and consequently special consideration is given to the texts' close relation with the cultural and historical realities of the early twentieth century, particularly the impact of the First World War. With the assistance of Jung's theories, an increased awareness of death and of the dark side of the psyche - though dealt with differently in both texts - is put forward as a significant factor in the deviation of Der Zauberberg and The Nick Adams Stories from the traditions of the Bildungsroman and of the narrative of initiation. This departure leads to a re-appraisal of the relation between the protagonists and their society, and to a new ethical attitude that presupposes different, more modem conceptions of what Bildung and initiation represent in the context of the early twentieth century. How and why they changed and if they survived as literary notions are questions this thesis attempts to answer.

Over the past few decades, there has been a shift in crime control discourses, from an almost exclusive focus on traditional criminal justice objectives and practices, to attention to ‘community’ and a range of strategies that seek to prevent crime and increase safety. Overall, evaluations of the community mobilization approach to crime prevention and safety conclude that these initiatives have generally demonstrated limited long-term impacts on ‘crime’ and safety at the local level. Through the ‘what works’ lens, the limits of the approach have typically been attributed to implementation challenges related to outreach and mobilization, and inadequate resourcing. Through a more critical lens, using studies on governmentality as a starting point, this study examines the mechanisms through which crime prevention and community safety became thinkable as sites of governance in Canada, and more specifically within the Community Development Framework (CDF) in Ottawa (ON). To this end, I conducted an ethnography using a triangulation of data collection methods, including extensive fieldwork and direct participant observation within the CDF. The findings of this ethnography describe in detail how the CDF emerged and unfolded (from 2008 to 2010) from a variety of perspectives. These findings show that the CDF encountered a number of common challenges associated with program implementation and community-based evaluation. However, the lack of progress made towards adhering to CDF principles and reaching CDF goals cannot be reduced to these failures alone. The CDF highlights the importance of locating the community approach to crime prevention within its wider socio-political context, and of paying attention to its numerous ‘messy actualities’. These include the dynamics and repercussions of: governing at a distance and of the dispersal of social control; the neoliberal creation and responsibilization of choice-makers; relations of power, knowledge and the nature of expertise; the messiness of the notion of ‘community’; bureaucratic imperatives and professional interests; the words versus deeds of community policing; and processes relevant to resistance within current arrangements.

I argue that although this initiative is not the only means to, nor the end of determining whether the NEPAD is being implemented, the ECGI can be used as a good indicator of whether one important dimension of the NEPAD is implemented. I establish whether, through an analysis of the ECGI, that dimension of the NEPAD is being implemented by looking at the countries where the ECGI was implemented. I maintain the position that through the NEPAD, good governance in African countries is promoted and that is why the authors of the NEPAD document created the ECGI.

This is an investigation by a participant researcher into the 'hidden world' of Further Education (FE). I became interested in how the many innovations, which have occurred in the past twenty years have made FE staff feel and how this effected their work and how they coped with what often felt like the conflicting demands of constant change. This is longitudinal insider research with a political edge as it is an examination of one of New Labour's major inclusion strategies, as it covers almost all of the twelve years they were in power. Over this period I have seen staff concerns change, as have their 'folk devils', and as lecturers and support staff went through different 'moral panics' during a period of massive change and uncertainty in the post compulsory sector. The original grounded theory type emergent categories and my own personal ontology lead me to adopt the position of a 'critical realist' where I have also attempted to incorporate a Feminist stance with some insights from sociological theorists like Bourdieu. Through the Literature Review I looked at the wider social and political issues of 'new managerialism', 'globalisation', 'proletarianisation', 'intensification of labour', the 'audit culture' and the casualisation and 'deprofessionalisation' of academic staff. These and other issues had emerged as possible reasons for the way staff said they felt in my interviews with tutors and my long term participant observations in three colleges and the results from one local stress survey and one national questionnaire of college managers. My conclusions are that many staff who choose to stay in FE are to a degree alienated but not anomic, they still believe in their role despite the changes and take pride and pleasure in their work, especially their interaction with students. The work place and division of labour are gendered both vertically and horizontally. Staff and trainers are unsure of the effectiveness of the new training but recognise that they need more skills to deal with the newer student groups. The different cultural capital, 'habitus' and 'fields' work against a common professionalism developing and these are unlikely to disappear.

I began my 480-hour internship with KID smART in February 2015 to work on getting AGCNO off the ground. The following report combines on-site observational research, expertise I developed from my educational training, and independent research to provide an analysis of KID smART and AGCNO’s current position, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Additionally, this report provides recommendations on how to address specific issues with operational management in order for AGCNO to establish independence and sustainability.

The subject of this thesis is teleworking as one of the genus of flexible working options for new economy service organisations. The research took the form of a multi-dimensional case study at Lloyd's Policy Signing Office (LPSO) which is the largest profit centre division of the Corporation of Lloyd's. The Corporation is responsible for the international insurance market, Lloyd's of London. LPSO employs 400 people and provides professional support services to its customers being the Lloyd's syndicates, Insurance Brokers and Managing Agencies that make up the market. The study involves examination of the business case for teleworking from the perspective of all the principal constituencies involved. The findings of previous research in relation to costs and benefits, staff productivity, staff retention and absenteeism levels are critically examined. Similarly the employee perspective in relation to the demand for teleworking, their job satisfaction and perception of work-life balance are also investigated within the context of existing research. The theory paradigms used to provide the structure to the research are principally the theory of the flexible firm, use of Balanced Score Card and from the Operational Research arena, use of six sigma methodology. The financial case for teleworking is also examined in detail. The fact that LPSO teleworkers perform largely the same tasks as their office based colleagues, and both groups work within the same management and process structure is a feature unusual in existing studies. Also, the level of access to and degree of co-operation from within Lloyd's made it possible to examine the case to a degree not found in existing research into any comparable organisation. The investigation found higher levels of productivity for teleworkers, lower levels of unplanned absence, and some evidence of a propensity to stay with LPSO because of the availability of teleworking. Teleworkers reported levels of work and life satisfaction that were never lower than office based colleagues and higher in some key respects. This was despite the fact that teleworkers feared that they might be disadvantaged in terms of career development and access to training. The study found that the financial pay-back for introducing teleworking was near neutral. Further, it was found that for LPSO higher levels of productivity might not be attributable solely to teleworking per se. Improved productivity might also arise because of the way in which work was distributed and output measured for teleworkers. Adopting comparable distribution and measurement for office based staff was potentially a viable option for LPSO management. Therefore, despite the significant increase in the productivity of teleworkers compared to their office base colleagues the resources required to introduce teleworking might be better applied to other means of improving per capita efficiency with the effects on employees' work-life balance being only an incidental by-product.
