Marshall, Alexander William. "Exodus industrious : a new American dream for the next industrial revolution." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/79176.

Abstract:
Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2013.
Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis. Page 238 blank.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 236-237).
Exodus Industrious has many beginnings, but few endings. Exodus Industrious is two parallel tales, told as one, which ultimately arrive at a critical moment in the history of the Americanism. Exodus is the story of capitalism and industry, and its antithetical decline which destabilizes a nation. Industrious is the story of the American Dream, a prodigal tale of the excess of Americanism, which was once rooted in a belief that if one possessed the characteristics of hard-work and self reliance, that they would ultimately reap the rewards of status, wealth, and power. Exodus Chronicles the rise and fall of the capitalistic state, while Industrious chronicles the industrious nature of the everyday American. The intersection of American industrial decline and the American dream, has prompted a new architectural vision of both. A vision which reacts to the failures of industry in solving societal problems, and the failure of the American Dream to sustain livelihoods. The vision seeks to mix the two, Industry and Domesticity, and recast them as an architectural solution to the problem which both have created. A rampant foreclosure crisis and skyrocketing unemployment. This new vision of the American Dream will be played out on a site in North East Detroit, in the Kettering Neighborhood. The Neighborhood is one of many which had been ravaged by the foreclosure crisis, as well as, the departure of a Major factory (The Packard Automobile Company) which would have once secured the livelihood of many of the residents of the Kettering Neighborhood, as well as, Detroit at Large. The proposal seeks to create an Anti-Capitalist Manufacturing Settlement, founded on the premise of Urban Revolution. The intention is to create four new Architectural Typologies Based on the Home, The Factory, The Warehouse and the Big-Box Superstore, which will attempt confront the political and social injustices which these typologies have arguably created, and propose a new interaction between them, which ultimately prompt a re-writing of the American Dream. We live in a nation in which 80% of the wealth is controlled by the top 5% of the populous, leaving the rest of us with no other option but Revolution. Revolution cannot be simply taken up as an occupation, or protest, it must be embodied via re-thinking the city, and re-assuming the right to the city, through the establishment of new architectural typologies. Architecture and Urban Space have the power to organize the masses, means of production, and the re-production of culture and through clever thinking, outside of the influence of capitalism, a new vision for the city can and must be envisioned. The intention of the thesis is to consider a new history, or a re-writing of an old one as the grounds for an architectural proposal. The American Dream and the rhetoric which surrounds it is the founding basis for action. The thesis seeks to examine the relationship between the single family home, manufacturing production, the maintenance of surplus value, and the distribution of commodities to a wider populous, while operating at the scale of a neighborhood of 3,000 - 5,000 people.

Welch, M. Courtney. "Evolution, Not Revolution: The Effect of New Deal Legislation on Industrial Growth and Union Development in Dallas, Texas." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2010. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc30524/.

Full text
Abstract:
The New Deal legislation of the 1930s would threaten Dallas' peaceful industrial appearance. In fact, New Deal programs and legislation did have an effect on the city, albeit an unbalanced mixture of positive and negative outcomes characterized by frustrated workers and industrial intimidation. To summarize, the New Deal did not bring a revolution, but it did continue an evolutionary change for reform. This dissertation investigated several issues pertaining to the development of the textile industry, cement industry, and the Ford automobile factory in Dallas and its labor history before, during, and after the New Deal. New Deal legislation not only created an avenue for industrial workers to achieve better representation but also improved their working conditions. Specifically focusing on the textile, cement, and automobile industries illustrates that the development of union representation is a spectrum, with one end being the passive but successful cement industry experience and the other end being the automobile industry union efforts, which were characterized by violence and intimidation. These case studies illustrate the changing relationship between Dallas labor and the federal government as well as their local management. Challenges to the open shop movement in Dallas occurred before the creation of the New Deal, but it was New Deal legislation that encouraged union developers to recruit workers actively in Dallas. Workers' demands, New Deal industrial regulations, and union activism created a more urban, modern Dallas that would be solidified through the industrial demands for World War II.

Abstract:
Sustainability and sustainable development are concerned as major topics in the current business and academic context. Although business entities are seen as a cause of the problem, they are similarly seen as a solution helping the world to survive from this enormous challenge. The current academic literature underlines the role of sustainable entrepreneurship as a decisive force, which helps to transform the profit-oriented paradigm into the “new industrial revolution”. In this context the motivating factors and their interactions behind the sustainable entrepreneurship are further unclear, which has lead to the following research questions: (1)  What entrepreneurial motivations in Finland affect entrepreneur’s decision to form and exploit sustainability-oriented opportunities? (2)  What institutional motivations in Finland affect entrepreneur’s decision to form and exploit sustainability-oriented opportunities? (3)  What are the interactions between entrepreneurial and institutional motivations affecting entrepreneur’s decision to form and exploit sustainability-oriented opportunities in Finland? The theoretical framework was constructed with a strong emphasis on entrepreneurial processes and opportunity theories. The main deviation from the conventional entrepreneurship towards the sustainable entrepreneurship was drawn through the wider nature of value creation in terms of triple bottom line approach. In addition the main motivational concepts were mirrored through the entrepreneurial motivations literature and the institutional theory, which provided effective theoretical lenses for the purpose of the empirical study.  The empirical study was conducted in Finland as a multiple case study with an exploratory research approach. The data was collected from sustainability-driven entrepreneurs and experts who had personal knowledge related to the phenomenon. More practical data collection methods were semi-structured interviews and questionnaires concerning entrepreneurial motivations. These selected methodological choices enabled accumulation of a rich set of data and provided further possibilities for fruitful data analysis.  The study indicated that human motivations related to the conventional entrepreneurship research are feasible in enhancing sustainable entrepreneurship. In the similar vein entrepreneurial motivations concerning self-realization, opportunities, personal values and prior experience have motivational effects on the sustainability-driven entrepreneur. Institutional motivations towards sustainable entrepreneurship are influential for the sustainability-oriented opportunity process. The analysis indicated that for example governmental incentives, consumption norms and social networks are motivating factors for sustainability-driven entrepreneurs. Finally the study indicated that both motivational sources have co-evolutive interactions throughout the process, but the intensity of these interactions similarly varied.

Abstract:
This thesis is an attempt to reassess the long debated issues of economic history from the perspective of institutional economics. Besides examining different approaches to technology and its impact on economic and social life, it analyzes the role of institutions in history. It discusses the institutional interpretations of the critical developments of economic history such as, the Industrial Revolution and the Great Divergence, with an emphasis on differences between the two scholarly traditions, namely, the Original Institutional Economics and the New Institutional Economics. Although the arguments of New Institutionalists concerning the role of technology in history have been effectively incorporated into the economic history research, the potential contributions of the Original Institutional Economics to the study of economic history have remained for the most part unexplored. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate the relevance and importance of original institutional analysis with respect to technology and economic history.

Abstract:
This study proposes to examine the industrialization of Brazil in the context of economic and political changes in the first government of Getulio Vargas, from 1930 until 1945. In the literature of the Brazilian economy with the coming of industry in Brazil, two visions are in opposition: on one hand, industrialization as a byproduct of government intervention in the coffee sector, on the other, deliberately promoted industrialization by the government. Based on an analysis of equilibrium in a dynamic game of imperfect information, rationality is evident from the creation of institutions for industrial development in the 1930s. The result shows the changes of equilibrium in which Brazil went from the 1930s, with changes in the tax structure, educational, financial and labor relations, that institutional change created fertile ground for the rise of industrialization that characterized the first Vargas government and also shows the intention of this government, when one observes the transformation of the tax system, so be immune to external economic fluctuations and also educational changes, which came to encourage the primary, secondary and technical vocational, measures designed to meet the new economic landscape of Brazil. Another point that confirms the outcome of the Nash equilibrium is perfect in subgame the loss of the importance of the coffee sector in the period that includes the nineteenth century until the end of the first Vargas government, where the evidence shows that farmers had, since the decade of 1930, to diversify investment trends due to the loss of income to the grower industry.

Abstract:

"De l’usine à l’utopie : New Lanark 1785-1825. : Histoire d’un village ouvrier « modèle »." Thesis, Lyon 2, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013LYO20083.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the textile industrial village of New Lanark (Scotland). Founded in 1785 and now a World Heritage site, it is mostly renowned for its reputation as a « model » factory, thanks to its association with Robert Owen (1771-1858), himself considered the « Father of British socialism ». It argues that such myth-making must be studied in context in order to grasp both its scope and significance, submitting it to a deconstruction and reconstruction process. Firstly, the history of the industrial village will be studied in the context of the Industrial Revolution in order to understand the specificities of this type of settlement, namely its close links with so-called « paternalistic » management methods. Examining paternalist discourses also sheds light on the foundations and formation of Owen’s thought, as he used New Lanark as a testbed for an experiment in social reform. Secondly, the industrial village will be studied per se in order to confront its internal dynamics with the application of Owen’s policies. Thirdly, we will analyse how New Lanark was received in its day, as Owen launched a campaign for the promotion of his doctrine, which amounted to the birth of the first British socialist movement in the late 1820s. The pioneering status which both New Lanark and Owen have been awarded also need to be analysed in relation to the latter’s labelling as a « utopian socialist ». The making of this tradition can therefore be understood as a series of strategic processes whereby Owen has been integrated into the socialist canon despite his supposed eccentricities and thanks primarily to his enlightened management policies at New Lanark, thus establishing him as the founder of a distinctively British socialism owing nothing to Marxism

Abstract:
Industry 4.0 is a significant shift and a tremendous challenge for every industrial segment, especially for the manufacturing industry that gave birth to the new industrial revolution. The research first uses literature analysis to sort out the literature, and focuses on the use of “core literature extension method” to enumerate the development direction and application status of different fields, which devotes to showing a leading role for theory and practice of industry 4.0. The research then explores the main trend of multi-tier supply in Industry 4.0 by combining machine learning and traditional methods. Next, the research investigates the relationship of industry 4.0 investment and employment to look into the inter-regional dependence of industry 4.0 so as to present a reasonable clustering based on different criteria and make suggestions and analysis of the global supply chain for enterprises and organizations. Furthermore, our analysis system takes a glance at the macroeconomy. The combination of natural language processing in machine learning to classify research topics and traditional literature review to investigate the multi-tier supply chain significantly improves the study's objectivity and lays a solid foundation for further research. Using complex networks and econometrics to analyze the global supply chain and macroeconomic issues enriches the research methodology at the macro and policy level. This research provides analysis and references to researchers, decision-makers, and companies for their strategic decision-making

Kinuthia, Wanyee. "“Accumulation by Dispossession” by the Global Extractive Industry: The Case of Canada." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/30170.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis draws on David Harvey’s concept of “accumulation by dispossession” and an international political economy (IPE) approach centred on the institutional arrangements and power structures that privilege certain actors and values, in order to critique current capitalist practices of primitive accumulation by the global corporate extractive industry. The thesis examines how accumulation by dispossession by the global extractive industry is facilitated by the “free entry” or “free mining” principle. It does so by focusing on Canada as a leader in the global extractive industry and the spread of this country’s mining laws to other countries – in other words, the transnationalisation of norms in the global extractive industry – so as to maintain a consistent and familiar operating environment for Canadian extractive companies. The transnationalisation of norms is further promoted by key international institutions such as the World Bank, which is also the world’s largest development lender and also plays a key role in shaping the regulations that govern natural resource extraction. The thesis briefly investigates some Canadian examples of resource extraction projects, in order to demonstrate the weaknesses of Canadian mining laws, particularly the lack of protection of landowners’ rights under the free entry system and the subsequent need for “free, prior and informed consent” (FPIC). The thesis also considers some of the challenges to the adoption and implementation of the right to FPIC. These challenges include embedded institutional structures like the free entry mining system, international political economy (IPE) as shaped by international institutions and powerful corporations, as well as concerns regarding ‘local’ power structures or the legitimacy of representatives of communities affected by extractive projects. The thesis concludes that in order for Canada to be truly recognized as a leader in the global extractive industry, it must establish legal norms domestically to ensure that Canadian mining companies and residents can be held accountable when there is evidence of environmental and/or human rights violations associated with the activities of Canadian mining companies abroad. The thesis also concludes that Canada needs to address underlying structural issues such as the free entry mining system and implement FPIC, in order to curb “accumulation by dispossession” by the extractive industry, both domestically and abroad.

Abstract:
1 Annotation Industry 4.0, also known as "the fourth industrial revolution" consisting of the digitization and automation of industry, is a relatively new topic in the Czech media field. Not so new topic is digitization in general, which is a process of implementing digital technologies in various areas of production and society. Over time, the arguments of both academic sides, optimists and critics of digital progress were stabilized in two antagonistic paradigms, with both groups of arguments can be found in the media discourse. The work will also examine the neutral approach, which does not benefit from any of the extreme opposites. The thesis will examine the overall framing of the topic and the similarity between media presentation and academic literature. Participants in the academic debate on the digital age can be found, among others, among digital media theorists. They can in principle be divided into two main parties. Optimists (Negroponte, Jenkins, Mařík) in principle support the new possibilities that digitization brings, while critics (McChesney, Spitzer, Morozov) point out that digital progress is dangerous. On the one hand, digital progress and robotization is being showed as a benefit, but on the other hand, academics warn against the fall of society and the negative side of the digital age....

Since the first Industrial Revolution, humanity has been undergone profound transformations. Approximately 200 years we have taken a leap from a technological, economic and social point of view. These changes were also marked by serious crises and conflicts. Twenty first century has brought new discoveries that promise to trigger even more significant changes, because besides the change itself, we will have to deal with the speed with which they happen. Next decades, every economic and social system, professional and personal relationships will be redefined, with an enormous “explosive potential”, Baldwin (2019, p. 5). Among the greatest impacts of these changes are labor relations. Given this, it is necessary to discuss the potential impacts of new technologies on employment. If technological tools come to do a large part of the activities performed today by humans, there may be mass unemployment and a reduction in consumption power, decreasing, the demand for goods produced in Industry 4.0. In this work, we seek to analyze historically, how the society was affected by changes in the production process, in addition, we try to verify how much the current society is aware of the potential impact of new technologies, for this, we carry out a quantitative field research with individuals from Brazil and Portugal. The results confirmed what other studies had already revealed, that Industry 4.0 has the potential to replace much of the existing workforce and may increase social inequality. Besides, there is a consensus among interviewers that governments, schools, businesses and individuals have a great responsibility in facing those challenges.

Simeon, Ophelie. "De l’usine à l’utopie : New Lanark 1785-1825. : Histoire d’un village ouvrier « modèle »." Thesis, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013LYO20083.

Abstract:
The ongoing Fourth Industrial Revolution fundamentally changes the world of work. Recent technological innovations have a significant impact on global economy, all areas of the national economy and on our everyday life. This diploma thesis deals with these impacts on the labour market in connection with the advancing trend of automation and digitization of work. Discussion on the future development of the revolution is in the sphere of expertise highly polarized. Versions that represent a negative view of the issue include image of massive job replacement, lack of talent and the rise of socio-economic and other inequalities. On the other hand, there are concepts that emphasize the positive impact on the labour market. The aim of this diploma thesis is to classify the trends in the working relations through the comparison of these two opinion streams and the systematic arrangement of the arguments presented by them. The final part addresses the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution in the Czech Republic. Van, Tonder Silna. "Managing the quality of employability development in higher education through blended learning : a comparative study." Thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/25796.

Full text
Abstract:
The fourth industrial revolution and twenty-first century employability development has emerged on education and political agendas as a priority all over the world. Researchers have suggested and investigated more innovative learning experiences using technology as part of a blended learning approach. Restructuring current programmes to include skills development has the potential to equip students with the skills needed for employment. The development of blended learning approaches is an expanding field in both developing and developed countries. Yet, the skills graduates display and employers’ dissatisfaction is a concern. Limited research has been conducted on the use of blended learning to enhance employability development in formal learning environments. Most of the available research relies on employer perceptions, with little data available on the knowledge, skills and values graduates actually possess or on the impact this has on employability outcomes. This study aims to address this gap by focussing on managing the quality of employability development in higher education using blended learning. The study was aimed at gaining insight into the perceptions, understanding, concerns and experiences of institutional managers, tutors, graduates and students in their real world when using blended learning to enhance graduateness. This aim made the qualitative research method a suitable match. This thesis reports on the resulting comparative study between a South African and an American institution using different blended learning approaches to compare different cases for similarities and variations. The South African higher education sector’s fitness for purpose and pursuit of benchmarking against international standards of academic quality, knowledge and expertise calls for redress and reform of teaching-learning. In the fourth industrial revolution with a 21st century knowledge economy, driven from a macro- meso- and microlevel perspective, higher education in South Africa has the potential to provide a workforce that is socially and economically viable and more inclusive. The thesis concludes with a model to support employability development in blended learning environments.
