Guarnieri, Patrizia. Intellettuali in fuga dall’Italia fascista. Florence: Firenze University Press, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.36253/978-88-5518-648-3.

Abstract:
Intellectuals Displaced from Fascist Italy is a bilingual (IT/ EN), free access and in progress website that draws attention to the migration of intellectuals during Fascism. Italy is usually considered a land of poor and uneducated migrants. But during the twenty years of Fascism, especially after the anti-Jewish laws but even before, professionals, students and scholars, including foreigners, expatriated alone or with families for political and racial reasons to the Americas, England, Mandatory Palestine, Switzerland. It is a limited but important phenomenon of brain drain, which in the case of Italy has yet to be investigated. Who were the people who decided to leave in search of freedom, work, and then salvation, and what did they do? Their names and stories were cancelled. This work attempts to reconstruct their lives thanks to foreign archives, letters, scattered memories and hundreds of photos. What difficulties did they face in their host countries? How many of them returned? The stories speak of devastating losses to the detriment of the country, of responsibilities and injustices, but also of resources and talents of Italian culture, of commitment and determination. This 2nd edition contains some new features, improves consultation with research functions and, as regards content, it enhances family mobility from a generational and gender perspective. The project was promoted by the University of Florence and has been supported by the Regione Toscana and by various institutes, with the sponsorship of the New York Public Library; Council for At-Risk Academics, London; J. Calandra Italian American Institute, CUNY; The Central Archives for the History of Jewish People, Jerusalem, UCEI and others.

Lerner, Robert E. Ernst Kantorowicz. Princeton University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.23943/princeton/9780691183022.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This is the first complete biography of Ernst Kantorowicz (1895–1963), an influential and controversial German– American intellectual whose colorful and dramatic life intersected with many of the great events and thinkers of his time. Born into a wealthy Prussian-Jewish family, Kantorowicz fought on the Western Front in World War I, was wounded at Verdun, and earned an Iron Cross. Later, he earned an Iron Crescent for service in Anatolia before an affair with a general's mistress led to Kantorowicz being sent home. After the war, he fought against Poles in his native Posen, Spartacists in Berlin, and communists in Munich. An ardent German nationalist during the Weimar period, Kantorowicz became a member of the elitist Stefan George circle, which nurtured a cult of the “Secret Germany”. Yet as a professor in Frankfurt after the Nazis came to power, Kantorowicz bravely spoke out against the regime before an overflowing crowd. Narrowly avoiding arrest after Kristallnacht, he fled to England and then the United States, where he joined the faculty at Berkeley, only to be fired in 1950 for refusing to sign an anticommunist “loyalty oath.” From there, he “fell up the ladder” to Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study, where he stayed until his death. Drawing on many new sources, including numerous interviews and unpublished letters, this book tells the story of a major intellectual whose life and times were as fascinating as his work.

Grissom, Carol A. Producing Posies: A Technical Study of the Frances Jones Poetker Collection of Bouquet Holders at Smithsonian Gardens. Smithsonian Institution Scholarly Press, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.5479/si.26336971.

Full text
Abstract:

This book focuses on small decorative objects for holding flowers, mainly taken by women to the opera, theater, and balls during the nineteenth century and variously known as posy holders, bouquet holders, flower holders, tussie-mussies, and porte-bouquets. Queen Victoria popularized bouquet holders by appearing with one at the theater shortly after her accession to the throne at age 18, and many reflect designs associated with her reign (1838–1901). In England, the earliest holders were probably owned by the wealthy, but in the latter half of the nineteenth century the low cost of silver and silver plating placed this fashion within reach of a burgeoning middle class. In France, early holders were set with precious gems for the nobility, but thereafter most vases were in electrogilded brass often set with faux pearls and gems made of glass. Exotic silver filigree holders were imported from China and India, and filigree production in Birmingham, England, catered to the wealthy in New York, Boston, and Philadelphia. Important catalogs of bouquet holder collections have been published, but bouquet holders are rarely marked, and attributions to place are often without basis. Prompted by a project undertaken by a conservator at the Smithsonian’s Museum Conservation Institute in preparation for digitization of a large collection donated to Smithsonian Gardens by Frances J. Poetker, 239 holders in the catalog have been attributed to places of manufacture, often linked by designs and materials to those in other international collections. Research and detailed study of manufacture have even determined by whom some were made. This evidence-based technical study and reference guide accompanied by high-resolution photographs is intended to fll a signifcant gap in the available literature and serve as a resource for museums and collectors.
