Arambula, Mercado Ivette. "A new polyhedral approach to combinatorial designs." Diss., Texas A&M University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/358.

Full text
Abstract:
We consider combinatorial t-design problems as discrete optimization problems. Our motivation is that only a few studies have been done on the use of exact optimization techniques in designs, and that classical methods in design theory have still left many open existence questions. Roughly defined, t-designs are pairs of discrete sets that are related following some strict properties of size, balance, and replication. These highly structured relationships provide optimal solutions to a variety of problems in computer science like error-correcting codes, secure communications, network interconnection, design of hardware; and are applicable to other areas like statistics, scheduling, games, among others. We give a new approach to combinatorial t-designs that is useful in constructing t-designs by polyhedral methods. The first contribution of our work is a new result of equivalence of t-design problems with a graph theory problem. This equivalence leads to a novel integer programming formulation for t-designs, which we call GDP. We analyze the polyhedral properties of GDP and conclude, among other results, the associated polyhedron dimension. We generate new classes of valid inequalities to aim at approximating this integer program by a linear program that has the same optimal solution. Some new classes of valid inequalities are generated as Chv´atal-Gomory cuts, other classes are generated by graph complements and combinatorial arguments, and others are generated by the use of incidence substructures in a t-design. In particular, we found a class of valid inequalities that we call stable-set class that represents an alternative graph equivalence for the problem of finding a t-design. We analyze and give results on the strength of these new classes of valid inequalities. We propose a separation problem and give its integer programming formulation as a maximum (or minimum) edge-weight biclique subgraph problem. We implement a pure cutting-plane algorithm using one of the stronger classes of valid inequalities derived. Several instances of t-designs were solved efficiently by this algorithm at the root node of the search tree. Also, we implement a branch-and-cut algorithm and solve several instances of 2-designs trying different base formulations. Computational results are included.

Alsawaha, Hamad Waled. "New Designs for Wideband Hemispherical Helical Antennas." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/34285.

Full text
Abstract:
A unique property of spherical and hemispherical helical antennas is that they provide very broad half-power beamwdiths and circular polarization over a narrow bandwidth. In this thesis, new designs for hemispherical helical antennas are introduced that provide significant improvement in bandwidth, while maintaining the directivity and half-power beamwidth of the basic design. In the basic design, a simple wire of circular cross section is wound on the surface of a hemisphere, whereas in the proposed new designs a metallic strip forms the radiating element. Furthermore, the metallic strip may be tapered and tilted relative to the hemispherical surface, allowing wider bandwidth to be achieved. The antenna is fed by a coaxial cable with the inner conductor connected, through a matching section, to the radiating strip and its outer conductor connected to a ground plane.

Radiation properties of the proposed hemispherical helical antennas are studied both theoretically and experimentally. A commercial software, based on the method of moments, is used to perform the numerical analysis of these helices. Three-dimensional far-field patterns, axial ratio, directivity, and voltage standing-wave ratio (VSWR) are calculated for several designs. The impacts of tapering as well as tilting of the metallic strip on radiation characteristics are examined. Also, matching of the proposed hemispherical antennas to 50⠦ transmission lines is addressed. A 4.5-turn hemispherical helix with tapered radiating element and zero degree tilt angle, (metallic strip is perpendicular to the hemisphere axis of symmetry) provides the largest overall bandwidth. A nonlinearly tapered matching section is incorporated into the design in order to reduce the VSWR. For this design, an overall measured bandwidth of about 24% at a center frequency of 3.35 GHz is achieved. Over this bandwidth, the axial ratio remains below 3 dB, the VSWR is less than 2, and the directivity is about 9 ±1 dB. A half- power beamwidth of 70° is also obtained.

A prototype of the best design was fabricated and tested using the VT indoor antenna range. Radiation patterns, the scattering parameter S11, and the axial ratio were measured. The measured and simulated results agree reasonably well. In particular, agreements between measured and calculated far-field patterns and VSWR are quite remarkable. This compact, low profile antenna might find useful applications in avionics, global positioning systems (GPS), and high data rate wireless communication systems.

Abstract:
The extensive use of highly flammable polymeric materials requires the development of innovative fire protective solutions to lower the threat on human lives and infrastructures integrity. Thin coatings especially act on the mass and heat transfer responsible for the combustion process directly at the interface between the substrate and the flame. They also have the advantage of concentrating the fire retardant system on one place, therefore using the smallest amount of material as possible, and with minimal impact on the bulk properties of the material. The aim of this Ph.D is to design innovative thin coatings adapted to various substrates, based on an in-depth understanding of the mechanism of action of effective systems. Layer-by-layer coatings are seen as a very efficient solution to lower the flammability of polymers and are particularly adapted to porous substrates. Though extensively studied, their mechanism of action remains unclear. Layer-by-layer coatings, composed either of chitosan and vermiculite or of polyethyleneimine and hexagonal boron nitride, were deposited on flexible polyurethane foam. Extensive analysis of the material before and after being exposed to various thermal constraints allowed to gather more insights on their mechanism of action. This knowledge was applied to develop new concepts. On the first hand, high-filler content composite coatings based on alginate/clay hydrogels were applied in a one pot process on polyamide 66 fabrics. The cross-linked network improved the thermal stability and physical barrier effect of the coating, and the approach was proven to be efficient as the samples were rated V-0 at UL94 test. On the other hand, another kind of thin physical barrier deposited by PVD and composed of protected metal was deposited on polyamide 6 plate. Relying on the reflection of infrared rays, this type of coating reduced the heat absorption by the substrate, and considerably increased the time to ignition in a radiative fire scenario. This concept was proven particularly efficient when combined with thermally triggered bulk fire retardant (FR) fillers. It was found that both approaches have a complementary effect. The coating acts first by reducing the heat absorption, delaying the activation of the FR systems. Once it fails, the fillers take over unhindered, allowing to reduce the peak of Heat Release Rate and Total Heat Release of polyamide 6 thanks to physical and chemical mechanisms

Abstract:

JIANG, XIN. Two new Ka-band traveling wave power divider/combiner designs. (Under the direction of Dr. Amir Mortazawi). The purpose of this thesis is to develop a traveling wave power dividing/combining technique for a Ka-band 32-device high power amplifier system. Based on this technique, two main components of the power amplifier system have been designed. One component is a back-to-back connected 4-way waveguide-to-waveguide power divider/combiner and the other one is a back-to-back connected 8-way waveguide-to-microstrip power divider/combiner. Of the two components, the former has exhibited a 4 GHz (~12.5%) 0.5 dB bandwidth with 0.15 dB insertion loss at 32 GHz in simulation. The later utilizes a novel power coupling structure, which has the advantages of low profile, ease of fabrication and efficient heat sinking for the solid-state amplifiers. It was fabricated and experiments on this passive structure have demonstrated a minimum overall insertion loss of 1.8 dB at 32.5 GHz with a 3 dB bandwidth of 15%. The power amplifier composed of these two traveling-wave designs offers a potential broadband solution for solid-state amplifiers applied in high power millimeter-wave systems.

Abstract:
In the past two decades the increase in passengers and frequency of flights has caused commercial air transportation to suffer. The system in current use was designed to satisfy different needs than the contemporary ones. Airports have failed to keep up with increased demands. Movement of passengers and aircraft have not kept pace with advances in technology. Many aircraft arriving and departing simultaneously create unnecessary delays and monetary loss to commercial airlines. The present solutions were based on new additions to existing airports as well as the creation of new airports so that metropolitan flights could arrive to different locations, e.g. JFK, La Guardia and Newark in the New York area; National and Dulles in the Washington D.C. area. The concept of the traditional airport is obsolete and needs to be completely rethought, not modified.

Abstract:
Part of the struggle of making architecture is reconciling its various realities; as it exists as pure idea and its transformation into a ‘thing’ existing in the world. Modern times pose a new challenge as well. As Jacob Bronowski has said, the dilemma is no longer to find structure for material but to find material for structure. Therefore, the ‘imposed idea’ is important as an impetus for Architecture to exist. In this project the imposed idea was the use of a series of parallel walls, vertical planes, that delimit the place for dwelling. In the first drawings, an attempt was made to use color as the substantiation or realization of space. The line drawing remains as a descriptive adjunct to the expressive drawing. They become together; the idea vs. its realization each describing the ‘thing’ in its evolving reality.

Abstract:
"It is one thing to delimit space by structural devices such as walls. It is quite another to infuse the space with a spirit which relates to the activities that take place in it and which stirs the senses and emotions of the people who USC it. Architecture encompasses both." - Edmund N. Bacon, Design of Cities This quote reflects how I feel about architecture and anything I do. A building can be made of four walls and a roof, but that is all it is. Architecture occurs when you as a designer create spaces in which people can experience a whole range of emotions, learn something not only about architecture, but about themselves and go away feeling more in tune with what is around them. I wanted to convey an attitude about architecture: the idea of how architecture can express the function of a building. In this case the government of the Town and Village of Ossining, New York.

Abstract:
The main purpose of this practice-led research is to explore the relevance of present day Taiwanese aboriginal weavers’ work to contemporary society and how it might be integrated into today’s production processes, and used on stage as well as in exhibition. My research focuses on my costume design work for two theatrical productions, Africussion and Romeo and Juliet, for which the costumes were made with traditional Taiwanese aboriginal woven textiles, and is based on the assumption that the process of costume design affords a space to explore other aesthetic possibilities for aboriginal woven textiles, and that the theatre provides a context in which the conventional conceptions of Taiwanese aboriginal textile design can be challenged, broken apart and renewed. This research deals with both the theoretical and the practical considerations that apply to aboriginal weaving, and examines the intellectual traditions of the philosophy of art and aesthetics to be found in its theory and application. My thesis challenges the notion upheld by many of today’s aboriginal weavers that their ‘traditions’ are fixed and unchangeable, and argues for the importance of individual creativity if modern, contemporary needs and tastes in textiles are to be met by materials woven in the aboriginal way. My practice-led research is grounded on the techniques of aboriginal backstrap loom and weaving and basket weaving, which were learned from aboriginal weavers in a 20-month tribal fieldwork. This project approaches aboriginal woven textiles as artistic objects in the context of theatre productions and performances instead of as mere commercial entities. It also argues that theatrical costume design is much more than just the making of simple costumes that complement performances.

Delgado, Segura Sergi. "Towards a better understanding of Bitcoin: from system analyses to new protocol designs." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/664349.

Full text
Abstract:
Bitcoin has kicked off one of the biggest paradigm shifts of the last century regarding how we understand and use money. The birth of criptocurrencies lays the foundations of a new financial system, where the need of trusted third parties, or central authorities, has been replaced by cryptography and an open flow of information between all the actors of the system. By sharing all the information regarding the operations of the system, all users can eventually agree in a distributed ledger, known as blockchain. Such a paradigm shift, however, poses some threads that, if not properly handled, may compromise the security of the system. In this thesis we have studied two of the core components of Bitcoin: its P2P network, and the set of unspent Bitcoins. Such analysis aimed to spot the strengths and weaknesses of the system in order to design solutions for them. The outcomes of our analyses have been, on the one side, characterizing the cryptocurrency P2P networks and, on the other side, spotting one of the current Bitcoin scalability problems: the unprofitable coins. Moreover, after analysing the system and obtaining a deep understanding of it, the thesis has focused on designing protocols to extend Bitcoin’s functionality in different payment scenarios. First, we have designed a solution to reduce the likelihood of a merchant of being deceived when accepting zero-confirmation transactions. Finally, we have designed a fair protocol for data trading using Bitcoin, where the exchange between data and coins is performed atomically.

Abstract:
This thesis is an exercise in responsibility regarding my actions as an architect. It is based upon the belief that architecture is a product conveying culture. While architecture can convey culture, it also has the potential to shape and facilitate change q in culture. Therefore, one can view the architect as more than a technician, making architecture stand and work properly, or an artist, concerned with the aesthetic/architectonic qualities of architecture, but rather as an active entity who can both convey and change cultural values through the built environment. The struggle in this thesis regarding responsibility has been to make my role more than an active entity in culture, but a consciously active entity in culture. Since I have long viewed culture as a political product and one's existence in culture as a political act, then one’s responsibility as an architect could be to make architecture as the conscious embodiment of a political ideology. For me, feminism is the political ideology, and Liberative Architecture is the conscious embodiment.

Abstract:
Ålö is a supplier in the agricultural Machinery Industry. They develop and manufacture mainly front-end loaders and they got other products groups too. One of the other product groups consists of the sub frames. The sub frames are the mechanical components that are required for the front loaders to fit to different tractors. The product integrations section, that develops the sub frames, wants to investigate the strengths of other concepts of designs than their traditional ones. New models of sub frames were created by using Solid Edge which is a CAD-system. The models’ strengths were simulated by using Femap which is its built-in FEM-tool for engineering analysis. The FE-analysis were compared to the FE-analysis of the original sub frames.   A total of three design changes were investigated. One set of sub frame was investigated with a new concept of design. Another set of sub frame was investigated with the new concept of design and it was also investigated with thinner plates.   What was concluded is that the design change with thinner plates resulted in a weight reduction of 5 kg but at the cost of higher levels of stress. To verify that the sub frame will last its desired life span prototypes should be physically tested by fatigue test. The new design concept resulted in too big increases of stress levels on one set of sub frame and on another set of sub frame it resulted in small differences of stress but with a weight increase.

Johnson, David Mills. "Between campus and community: a program and design for a new student health facility." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/53133.

Full text
Abstract:
The Student Health Services is located in Henderson Hall, a complex consisting of several buildings constructed at various times. Three other departments share this complex. Because of inadequate space and a building layout which does not easily accommodate the Health Services’ function, a study was completed to determine needs of the facility, and a final design solution was produced to supply the needs of the University, the Health Services and the community. Advantages of the existing location as well as the university master plan indicated keeping the facility in the same area. But problems created by the layout and shape of the present facility necessitate a new facility designed to increase both efficient handling of patient and staff flow as well as creating a positive image. The facility should communicate that it is a place for healing rather than a place for the sick. The new building ties into the existing complex creating a boundary between the University and the community, and creates a front facing the new student activities building. The original residence of the first College president will be restored to its original scale and identity by the removal of its present two additions.

Lemón, Linn. "Topology optimization process for new designs of reconstruction plates used for bridging large mandibular defects." Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Institutionen för medicinsk teknik, 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-131096.

Full text
Abstract:
Loss of bone in the mandible as a result from for example resection of bone tumors or trauma, can in more complex cases be reconstructed using a reconstruction plate to provide stability between the remaining mandible stumps. Different studies on reconstruction plates present a fracture rate of 2.8-9.8 %. The rate of plate fracture and plate loosening increases the need to improve the design of the reconstruction plate. A useful tool to find new designs for structures is topology optimization. Topology optimization is a mathematical based method where it is possible to define an optimization problem for a specific load case. Based on the defined problem, the solver calculates the most appropriate design to reach the final goal. The aim of this work is to investigate, describe, and discuss how new designs for reconstruction plates used for bridging large mandibular defects can be achieved by using topology optimization as a tool.   Two software programs handling topology optimization from Altair Engineering were used: SimLab 14.0 and HyperMesh 14.0. Both of them uses the solver OptiStruct to solve the defined topology optimization problem. The topology optimization problem was defined to minimize the compliance of the structure with an upper limit of the allowed volume fraction used for the new design. Three different clenching tasks were examined: right unilateral clench, clenching in the intercuspal position, and incisal clench. All three load cases resulted in different designs, the designs were also affected by the initial amount of screws used, and by the defined value on the allowed thickness of the created parts in the new design. The results gave an initial understanding of topology optimization, and indicated the possibilities a design process with topology optimization has to achieve new designs for reconstruction plates used for large mandibular fractures.
