Choudhury, Moinuddin Hasan. "Biopacemaking : new targets and new mechanisms." Thesis, University of Manchester, 2016. https://www.research.manchester.ac.uk/portal/en/theses/biopacemaking-new-targets-and-new-mechanisms(b35ec222-29eb-432f-9b6d-238f3cbcd72d).html.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Biopacemaking is the attempt to replicate sinoatrial node (SAN)-like pacemaker activity in other areas of the heart by manipulating genes involved in pacemaking. Application of this could emulate the electronic pacemaker without the need for implantation of permanent hardware, or directly repair dysfunctional SAN tissue in human disease. We upregulated the transcription factors Tbx18, Tbx3 and the membrane ion exchanger NCX1 in bradycardic subsidiary atrial pacemaker (SAP) tissue which we used as a model of SAN dysfunction. We aimed to show that one or more of these gene targets could improve pacemaker function and alter the molecular character of SAP tissue and thus could potentially be used for the repair of dysfunctional SAN tissue. Methods: SAP tissue was isolated from the right atria of rats and kept beating in culture at 37°C for 48 hours. Recombinant adenoviruses were injected into SAP preparations to upregulate Tbx18, Tbx3 and NCX1 individually. Beating rate, overdrive suppression and pharmacological response to If blockade and β-adrenergic stimulation were measured along with molecular changes in pacemaker and atrial genes and proteins using RT-qPCR and immunohistochemistry. Results: Tbx18 upregulation significantly increased SAP beating rate after 48 hours of culture (a final rate of 141 ± 9 bpm in uninfected SAP tissue versus 215 ± 16 bpm in Ad-Tbx18 infected SAP tissue, p<0.01). It induced upregulation of HCN2 (p<0.01) and RYR2 (p<0.05), downregulation of HCN4 (p<0.05) and no change HCN1, Tbx3, Kv1.5, Kir2.1, Nav1.5, NCX1, Cx43, Cx45, Cav1.2 or Cav3.1. There was also no change in overdrive suppression and no change in response to pharmacology. No increase in beating rate was seen with either Tbx3 or NCX1 upregulation. Tbx3 preparations induced downregulation of the atrial genes Kir2.1 (p<0.01) and Nav1.5 (p<0.05), along with HCN1 (p<0.05), HCN4 (p<0.01), Tbx18 (p<0.05) and NCX1 (p<0.01), upregulated Cx43 (p<0.05) and showed no change in Cx45, RYR2, Kv1.5. NCX1 preparations demonstrated reduced overdrive suppression (p<0.05). Conclusion: Tbx18 showed the most potential for biopacemaking in SAP tissue, however both Tbx3 and NCX1 could be applied as secondary targets to fine tune biopacemaker function. Future work would focus on applying these targets to dysfunctional SAN tissue in larger animals.

Lahneman, William J. "Challenge and response: new threat, new constraints, new Navy." Thesis, Monterey, California: Naval Postgraduate School, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/28024.

Full text
Abstract:
The apparent reduction in the magnitude of the Soviet threat must not obscure the fact that challenges to the national interests of the United States still remain. This thesis proposes that challenges to U.S. national interests have changed to such a degree that American strategic planners must adopt a new planning paradigm to replace the traditional one based on containment of the Soviet Union. The thesis focuses on naval force and organizational planning over the next ten to fifteen years, a timeframe during which the international environment should undergo a transition to a multipolar balance of power system. The thesis concludes that the Navy of the future can be smaller, but must retain its technological superiority in all areas of warfare. A vigorous research and development effort remains essential, and production of new systems and platforms must continue, albeit in smaller numbers and at higher unit costs. Projection of power ashore will be the principal mission of conventional naval forces. Organizationally, the Navy must expand its intelligence gathering efforts, and must formalize career progressions for strategic planners, international negotiators and legislative affairs subspecialists. The thesis includes a discussion of significant domestic constraints that promise to jeopardize the attainment of the desired force structure

McGlynn, Catherine. "How new is new loyalism?" Thesis, University of Salford, 2004. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/26808/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides an analysis of the manifestos of two political parties in Northern Ireland. These parties are the Progressive Unionist Party (PUP) and the Ulster Democratic Party (UDP), which is now defunct. These parties came to prominence during the peace process that led to the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998 and both were termed new loyalist. The phrase new loyalism suggests a novel alternative to the pessimistic and exclusivist ethos of traditional loyalist expression as exemplified by lan Paisley's Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). However, a brief survey of the history of labourism in the North-East of Ireland reveals that there have been previous attempts to form a political party with a social democratic manifesto, an agenda that could supplant sectarianism as the main organising principle of Protestant working class politics. Some of these movements have emerged from within the same loyalist paramilitary groupings who were responsible for the formation of the new loyalist parties. The purpose of the research on which this thesis was based was to ascertain if the PUP and the UDP represented a genuinely new and different political direction in loyalism, which could outlast uncertainty over constitutional matters. A framework to test the parties was constructed from two separate literature reviews. The first was a review of literature defining unionism, loyalism and new loyalism. The second considered the academic debate on reconciling differentiated citizenship rights within a polity. Data was then collected on the development and manifestos of the two parties and qualitative interviews were conducted with fifteen members of the PUP. The thesis concludes that the parties were both affected by a number of external factors, in particular the growing disaffection of unionists with the Agreement. However, it must also be concluded that neither party developed an agenda that transcended sectarianism.

Abstract:
Writing is critical to two main anthropological goals: to communicate useful knowledge about humanity and society; and to stimulate interest, discussion, and action on issues that are of societal import. To achieve these goals anthropologists must write in accessible styles for diverse audiences. In this paper, we review the work of five popular nonfiction writers to determine the extent to which their approachable writing styles are compatible with anthropological rigor and nuance. While none of these authors meets all of our hopes for anthropological analysis, each does manage to blend some elements of scholarship with a readable style. We therefore highlight some of their stylistic approaches in the hope that these might help anthropologists engage more effectively in public debate.

Abstract:
Like elsewhere in Europe, the tides of nationalist right-wing rhetoric in Sweden have become instrumental in generating a wave of anti-liberal and anti-immigration sentiments in politics and media. In particular, one branch of right-wing alternative media has become a breeding ground for normalizing such rhetoric. Does the anti-immigration stance in such media disguise racist inclinations? In this thesis we examine the discourse of three right-wing alternative media sites in Sweden to explore the possible employment of different types of racism in their articles. By taking the constructivist viewpoint and adopting the post-colonial conceptions of the 'Self' and the 'Other', racist discourse was analyzed and characterized as either biological or cultural. From these two theories, we derived concepts concerning descriptions of contemporary and ideal Swedish society that will be used as further indicators of racist discourses. In this single case study, 94 articles from Fria Tider, Nya Tider, and Samhällsnytt were analyzed on the topics of immigration, integration and crime through a qualitative content analysis. The results show that most of the articles contain cultural racist discourse.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses the culture of YouTube in Brazil and its role in the broader Brazilian media environment. It argues that Brazilian YouTube represents Brazilian culture in new ways, helping to change how the nation sees itself. It closely examines three highly popular Brazilian YouTube channels: Canal KondZilla, whinderssonnunes and Porta dos Fundos, as well as their cross-over productions for television. The analysis shows that these channels combine the culture of YouTube with existing television references and Brazilian popular culture expressions to produce more progressive representations of class, race, and regional identity, and to discuss controversial topics from new perspectives.

Svozilík, Jiŕí. "Photonic entanglement : new sources and new applications." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/284225.

Full text
Abstract:
Non-classical correlations, usually referred as entanglement, are ones of the most studied and discussed features of Quantum Mechanics, since the initial introduction of the concept in the decade of 1930s. Even nowadays, a lot of efforts, both theoretical and experimental, are devoted in this topic, that covers many distinct areas of physics, such as a quantum computing, quantum measurement, quantum communications, solid state physics, chemistry and even biology. The fundamental tasks that one should consider related to the entanglement are: -How to create quantum entangled states. -How to maintain entanglement during propagation against sources of decoherence. -How to effectively detect it. -How to employ the benefits that entanglement offers. This thesis, divided into four chapters, concentrates on the first and last tasks considered above. In Chapter 1, a brief introduction and overview of what it is entanglement is given, starting with the famous paper of Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen, and continuing with John Bell's formulation of the so-called Bell's inequalities. We define here general concepts about entangled quantum states and introduce important entanglement measures, that are later used all over the thesis. In this chapter, sources of entangled particles (namely photons) are also mentioned. The importance is put on sources based on the nonlinear process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The last part of this chapter is then dedicated to a list of applications that benefit from the use of engangled states. Chapter 2 is devoted to the systematic study of the generation of entangled and non-entangled photon pairs in semiconductor Bragg reflection waveguides. Firstly, we present a source of photon pairs with a spectrally uncorrelated two-photon amplitude, achieved by a proper tailoring of the geometrical and material dispersions via structural design of waveguides. Secondly, Bragg reflection waveguides are designed in a scuh way, that results in the generation of spectrally broadband paired photons entangled in the polarization degree of freedom. Finally, we present experimental results of entangled photon pairs generation in this type of structures. In Chapter 3, we explore the feasibility of the generation of photon pairs entangled in the spatial degree of freedom, i.e. in the orbital angular momentum (OAM). Firstly, we examine how to create a highly multidimensional Hilbert space using OAM modes obtained in a chipred-poled nonlinear bulk crystals. Here, we show, how an increase of the chirp of the poling can effectively increase the Schmidt number by several orders of magnitude. Secondly, we investigate periodically poled silica glass fibres with a ring-shpaed core, that are capable to support the generation of simple OAM modes. The final Chapter 4 is dedicated to the Anderson localization and quantum random walks. At the beginning of this chapter, we present an experimental proposal for the realization of a discrete quantum random walks using the multi-path Mach-Zehnder interferometer with a spatial light modulator, that allows us to introduce different types of statistical or dynamical disorders. And secondly, we show how the transverse Anderson localization of partially coherent light, with a variable first-order degree of coherence, can be studied making use of entangled photon pairs.

Abstract:
The development of new pipeline systems through lands where the primary fuel source has been fuel oil or wood offers unique opportunities for the utilization of natural gas from the pipeline. The use of gas in place of oil can improve local economies; reduce heating and energy cost and lower the emissions produced from energy sources. A computer simulation has been built that can examine all the options for the use of gas from a pipeline system, considering direct replacement of fuel oil with a local gas pipeline system, the generation of electric power — locally or centralized at the pipeline, and the option of using cogeneration with the pipeline compressor stations. The simulation provides both graphic and tabular presentation of the results to show payback and the influence of changes in key parameters. The paper discusses this program and the possible applications to areas hitherto remote from the supply of natural gas for fuel.

Abstract:
Since the end of the great crisis of 2007-10, the financial services industry began a process of accelerating change. New business models based on convergent technological developments are challenging the status quo of a long-established and traditional industry. The purpose of this document is to consider the latest developments in the financial services industry and to discuss how they might affect the ability for firms--particularly small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)--and individuals to access financing. It concludes that the transformative developments in the financial services industry will most likely improve and expand access of firms and individuals to finance, as well as increase formalization and financial inclusion. Some hurdles and risks that may hamper and/or delay the process are identified: the reaction of the industry incumbents, the lack of appropriate and timely regulation, the lack of access to good-quality and affordable digital connectivity (broadband access), and the unforeseen and seriously disruptive changes that might come from the payments space. To confront these risks, the public sector must define a set of proper and timely responses. The strategy for public interventions must be defined based on a deep understanding of the forces that are driving the change.
