Abstract:
In this chapter, the generalized or weak interpretation of the Dirichlet and Neumann problems for general elliptic expressions is motivated and then the Lax–Milgram Theorem is used to set the problems in the framework of eigenvalue problems for operators acting in Hilbert space. Results on variational inequalities in Chapter IV are applied to establish Stampacchia’s weak maximum principle, and this leads to the notion of capacity.

Abstract:
This chapter is devoted to the study of the Schrödinger operator −Δ‎ + q with q real, and, in particular, the distribution of its eigenvalues. A general result is established on an open subset Ω‎ of Rn using the Max–Min Principle and covering families of congruent cubes for the Dirichlet problem and a Whitney covering for the Neumann problem. The Cwikel–Lieb–Rosenbljum inequality is proved for q in Ln/2(Rn).

Barrett, Jeffrey A. The Conceptual Foundations of Quantum Mechanics. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198844686.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The book starts with a description of classical mechanics then discusses the quantum phenomena that require us to give up our commonsense classical intuitions. We consider the physical and conceptual arguments that led to the standard von Neumann-Dirac formulation of quantum mechanics and how the standard theory explains quantum phenomena. This includes a discussion of how the theory’s two dynamical laws work with the standard interpretation of states to explain determinate measurement records, quantum statistics, interference effects, entanglement, decoherence, and quantum nonlocality. A careful understanding of how the standard theory works ultimately leads to the quantum measurement problem. We consider how the measurement problem threatens the logical consistency of the standard theory then turn to a discussion of the main proposals for resolving it. This includes collapse formulations of quantum mechanics like Wigner’s extension of the standard theory and the GRW approach and no-collapse formulations like pure wave mechanics, the various many-worlds theories, and Bohmian mechanics. In discussing alternative formulations of quantum mechanics we pay particular attention to the explanatory role played by each theory’s empirical ontology and associated metaphysical commitments and the conceptual trade-offs between theoretical options.

Mann, Peter. The Stationary Action Principle. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198822370.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
This crucial chapter focuses on the stationary action principle. It introduces Lagrangian mechanics, using first-order variational calculus to derive the Euler–Lagrange equation, and the inverse problem is described. The chapter then considers the Ostrogradsky equation and discusses the properties of the extrema using the second-order variation to the action. It then discusses the difference between action functions (of Dirichlet boundary conditions) and action functionals of the extremal path. The different types of boundary conditions (Dirichlet vs Neumann) are elucidated. Topics discussed include Hessian conditions, Douglas’s theorem, the Jacobi last multiplier, Helmholtz conditions, Noether-type variation and Frenet–Serret frames, as well as concepts such as on shell and off shell. Actions of non-continuous extremals are examined using Weierstrass–Erdmann corner conditions, and the action principle is written in the most general form as the Hamilton–Suslov principle. Important applications of the Euler–Lagrange formulation are highlighted, including protein folding.

Abstract:
Wirba, Ebenezer Lemven, Fiennasah Annif' Akem, and Francis Menjo Baye. Scrutinizing the sticky floor/glass ceiling phenomena in the informal labour market in Cameroon: An unconditional quantile regression analysis. 13th ed. UNU-WIDER, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.35188/unu-wider/2021/947-1.

Full text
Abstract:
Cameroon’s informal labour market largely harbours female workers, engaged mainly in low-productivity and low-paying jobs. We investigate the sticky floor and glass ceiling phenomena in the informal labour market as a whole and across its segments. We use the 2010 Cameroon labour market survey, employing the recentred influence function and blending the Oaxaca-Ransom and Neuman-Oaxaca decomposition methods. The resulting framework enables us to account for selectivity bias at the mean, resolve the index number problem of the standard decomposition, and examine earnings differentials across the unconditional earnings distribution. We find compelling evidence of a sticky floor phenomenon in the informal labour market manifested essentially among wage earners. Returns to experience mitigate the gender earnings gap at the mean, and 10th and 50th percentiles of the unconditional earnings distribution. Female workers have an unambiguous human-capital-based advantage over their male counterparts at the mean, lower tail, and median of the distribution.

Hrvatović, Hazim. Geološki vodič kroz Bosnu i Hercegovinu. Akademija nauka i umjetnosti Bosne i Hercegovine, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.5644/d2022.90.

Full text
Abstract:
Hvala recenzentima, prof. dr. Sejfudinu Vrabcu i prof. dr.
