Needle-to-stem unit rate (NESTUR) is a stem growth index of conifer seedling trees that measures the efficiency of stemwood production per unit of needle growth. Five experiments were carried out in this thesis using progenies of two unrelated full-sib radiata pine crosses. The initial experiment (experiment 1) applied the bulked segregant analysis technique to determine whether RAPD analysis could be successfully extended to the development of molecular markers for NESTUR in radiata pine. The NESTUR values of 174 progenies of the full-sib family 12038 x 10946 were determined. Based on the genotypic analysis of the individuals, two quantitative trait loci (QTL) controlling NESTUR were identified at ANOVA P-levels of 0.01-0.001. An absence of RAPD fragment markers generated by primers OPE-06 and OPA-10 was associated with low NESTUR values, while primer UBC-333 generated a 550 bp band that was associated with high NESTUR values. Linkage to components of NESTUR (increments in stem diameter and stem volume) was demonstrated for one of the QTL, while the other was unique to NESTUR, and not shared with the components. There was a significant interaction between the two QTLs. Presence of OPA-101200 locus appeared to inhibit expression of the QTL linked to UBC-333 [subscript 550].

To further analyse the quantitative trait loci (QTLs) controlling NESTUR, a linkage map was constructed from RAPD markers segregating in 93 haploid progeny of another full sib cross (30040 x 80121) (experiment 2). Two hundred and sixty-two (262) markers were mapped to 14 linkage groups of at least 7 markers, ranging in size from 39 to 183 cM. The 14 linkage groups covered approximately 1511 cM of genetic map distance.

In experiment 3, the linkage map was used to map QTLs controlling NESTUR, as well as increments in seedling stem diameter, volume, and height and needle volume. Altogether, five putative QTLs were detected for NESTUR, with explained variation ranging from 9 to 22%. Of the five QTLs detected, 3 were coincidental with those for stem growth in height, diameter and volume. The two QTL positions that were unique to NESTUR were flanked by QTLs for the component traits. Together, effects of the five QTLs explained 48% of the total phenotypic variation for NESTUR.

Ability of identified markers to predict the phenotype and seedlings with growth potential was assessed in the cross 30040 x 80121, using six RAPD markers associated with NESTUR at ANOVA P-levels of 0.01-0.001 (experiment 4). The correlation between observed NESTUR and predicted values was 0.70. Differences in observed vs. predicted values were not large and did not indicate serious misclassifications, such as classification of an upper ranking individual into the lower group, or vice versa.

Over a two-year growth period, the ability of NESTUR to predict stem growth was strongly affected by seedling age. In contrast, markers linked to NESTUR showed a consistent ability to predict stem growth, irrespective of seedling age. Compared with the top 1% of the original population, seedlings selected for their genotypic values showed a higher stem volume growth of 103% in the first year, and 76% in the second year.

The expression of QTLs for stem volume, stem diameter, height, number of branches, number of whorls, and branches/whorl were compared at 5, 12, and 24 months of age. Two QTLs detected for height showed contrasting expression over two years, one was gradually reduced from LOD of 2.70 to 0.43 and the other increased from 1.12 to 2.45. Compared with the pattern observed for height, LOD scan profiles for diameter and volume showed less temporal change of peaks, suggesting that the genetic control for height growth is probably more unstable than that of diameter. QTLs controlling the phenotype at the time of measurement (ie the final phenotype) showed similar magnitude of effects on that trait's respective increments (or growth rate).

Resumo: Esta tese se propõe a estudar a obra de crítica literária produzida por Nestor Vítor que foi, ao longo dos anos, reunida em livros. A abordagem será inicialmente feita através de um panorama de todos os artigos selecionados para a análise, enfocados um a um, usando o critério cronológico para se delimitar as questões comuns que embasaram cada período de sua crítica. Em um momento seguinte, se buscará apresentar um painel amplo contento a história da crítica produzida a respeito da obra de Nestor Vítor e, a partir de tal abordagem, identificaremos questões recorrentes a vários historiadores e críticos literários, assim como salientaremos as suas especificidades. Das recorrências a consideração de que Nestor Vítor seria um crítico impressionista será questionada, devido à falta de fundamentação que tal definição encerra. Na busca de suprir a vaguidão de tal conceituação, buscaremos encontrar as fundamentações teóricas que Nestor Vítor recebeu das correntes críticas europeias produzidas durante o século XIX, as quais se encontram presentes na crítica nestoriana, seja aceitando os seus preceitos, seja questionando-os. De tal abordagem, buscaremos, enfim, definir questões conceituais que permeiem toda a obra crítica de Nestor Vítor, definindo as suas formas de abordagem uma vez que definiriam para o próprio crítico o que viria a trabalhar, gerando quatro questões básicas: a sua própria noção de arte literária; sobre como viria a trabalhar, definindo a noção e a função da crítica literária; estabelecendo também a noção do produtor da arte literária – o escritor –; e do receptor desta arte – o leitor.

I love contrasts and meetings between people. Situations where individual differences are highlighted, affected and shaped by each other. In this project I have been working with five characters: the aggressive one, the frightened one, the social one, the reserved one and the proud one. By analyzing the characters I have tried to understand how they are able to meet and agree with each other. The goal has been to create a place where this can happen, but which is also adapted for each respective character. The project is based on a field study I did in the summer of 2013, when I lived in a masai village in the northern part of Tanzania. Nescar is the name of a masai women I got to know, is means The one that you can trust. The black color in the masai culture is used for protection against evil spirits, in my project I want it to be a symbol of protection of differences.

A surge of recent work elucidating a role for learning and memory in avian nest-building behaviour has challenged the long-standing assumption that nest building develops under genetic control. Whereas that work has been addressed at describing the cognitive mechanisms underpinning nest-building behaviour, almost nothing is known about either the neurobiological processes controlling nest building or the selection pressures responsible for the diversity in avian nest-building behaviour. Here, I sought to identify both the neural substrates involved in nest-building behaviour and some of those selection pressures. First, I used expression of the immediate early gene product Fos, an indirect marker of neuronal activity, to identify brain regions activated during nest-building behaviour in the brains of nest-building and control zebra finches (Taeniogypia guttata). I found that neural circuits involved in motor control, social behaviour, and reward were activated during nest building. Furthermore, I found that subpopulations of neurons that signal using the nonapeptides vasotocin and mesotocin and the neurotransmitter dopamine located within some of these neural circuits were also activated during nest building, suggesting these cell-signalling molecules may be involved in controlling nest-building behaviour. Next, I found that variation in the amount of folding in the cerebellum, a brain structure thought to be involved in manipulative skills, increased with increasing nest structural complexity, suggesting that the cerebellum is also involved in nest building. Finally, using evolutionary statistical models, I found support for the hypothesis that nest-site competition off-ground and increased predation pressure on the ground in Old World babblers (Timaliidae) led to the co-evolution of building domed nests on the ground. Here, then, I provide the first evidence of potential neural substrates controlling and selection pressures contributing to variation in nest-building behaviour.

Bumblebees have undergone dramatic declines both in Britain and further afield during the last century. Bumblebees provide a crucial pollination service to both crops and wild flowers. For these reasons, they have received a great deal of research attention over the years. However, the ecology of wild bumblebee nests and the interactions between nests and other species, particularly vertebrates has been somewhat understudied. This is largely due to the difficulty in finding sufficient nests for well replicated study and a lack of appropriate methods of observation. Here, methods for locating bumblebee nests were trialled. It was found that a specially trained bumblebee nest detection dog did not discover nests any faster than people who had received minimal instruction. Numbers of nest site searching queens provide a reliable indication of suitable nesting habitat (i.e. places where nests are more likely to be found). In order to investigate aspects of bumblebee nesting ecology wild nests were observed by filming or regular observations by either researchers or members of the public. Some buff-tailed bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) nests were collected and all the bumblebees were genotyped to identify any foreign individuals. A review of British mammalian dietary literature was conducted to identify those that predate bumblebees. Great tits (Parus major) were filmed predating bumblebees at nests and it was clear from the literature and observations that badger (Meles meles), pine martens (Martes martes) and hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) predate bumblebee nests, as well as the wax moth (Aphomia sociella). No evidence for predation by any other vertebrate species was found. Behaviours recorded included parasitism by Psithyrus, apparent nectar theft and possible usurpation by true bumblebees, egg-dumping by foreign queens and drifting and drifter reproduction by foreign workers. These events may cause harm to colonies (for example, through horizontal transmission of pathogens, or exploitation of the host nest’s resources). Alternatively where for example, usurpation by true bumblebees, egg-dumping or drifting is successful, these alternative reproductive strategies may increase the effective population size by enabling a single nest to produce reproductives of more than one breeding female. These data found that wild buff-tailed bumblebees (B. terrestris) nests with a greater proportion of workers infected with Crithidia bombi were less likely to produce gynes than those with fewer infected workers. Gyne production also varied dramatically between years. There is a growing body of evidence that a class of frequently used insecticides called neonicotinoids are negatively impacting bumblebees. An experiment was conducted using commercial colonies of buff-tailed bumblebees (B. terrestris) which were fed pollen and nectar which had been treated with the neonicotinoid imidacloprid at field realistic, sub-lethal levels. Treated colonies, produced 85-90% fewer gynes than control colonies. If this trend is representative of natural nests feeding on treated crops, for example, oilseed rape and field beans or garden flowers, then this would be expected to cause dramatic population declines. In this thesis methods for locating bumblebee nests have been tested, new behaviours have been identified (for example, egg-dumping by queens and predation by great tits) and estimations for rates of fecundity and destruction by various factors have been provided. Doubt has been cast over the status of some mammals as predators of bumblebee nests and estimates for gyne production, nest longevity, etc, have been given. More work is needed, especially observations of incipient nests as this is when the greatest losses are thought to occur.

Nas páginas de A Ordem Privada e a Organização Política Nacional (1939), Nestor Duarte dialoga com vários dos ensaios de interpretação do Brasil publicados ao longo dos anos trinta. Neste trabalho destacarei três das questões abordadas pelo autor, contrastando sua análise com as posições adotadas por outros participantes do debate daquela década. Eis os pontos examinados: i) seu diagnóstico crítico da permanência de uma lógica privatista na formação histórica da organização social brasileira; ii) sua proposta normativa do Estado como dimensão pública de convivência; e iii) sua defesa da democracia como processo preferencial de pedagogia política. Dessas teses de Duarte emerge uma ácida crítica do regime forte e centralizado do Estado Novo, em claro antagonismo com o proposto, por exemplo, por um pensador como Oliveira Vianna.In the pages of his book A Ordem Privada e a Organização Política Nacional (1939), Nestor Duarte establishes a dialog with many of the so called interpretations of Brazil essays, published during the 1930s. In the present work, I have selected three questions dealt by Duarte in his essay, and tried to contrast them with positions preferred by other authors of the period. The points examined are: i) his critical diagnosis of the permanence of a privatist logic in the historical formation of brazilian social organization; ii) his normative proposal of a State understood as a public or communal dimension; e iii) his defence of democracy as a process of political pedagogy. From Duartes thesis emerges a acid critique of the strong and centralized State of the Estado Novo regime, in clear opposition with the proposals of a writer such as Oliveira Vianna, for instance.

Criteria for the confinement of plasmas consisting of a positive and negative component in Penning type traps with nested electric potential wells are presented. Computational techniques for the self-consistent calculation of potential and plasma density distributions are developed. Analyses are presented of the use of nested well Penning traps for several applications. The analyses include: calculations of timescales relevant to the applications, e.g. reaction, confinement and relaxation timescales, self-consistent computations, and consideration of other physical phenomenon important to the applications. Possible applications of a nested well penning trap include production of high charge state ions, studies of high charge state ions, and production of antihydrogen. In addition the properties of a modified Penning trap consisting of an electric potential well applied along a radial magnetic field are explored.

Mestrado em MúsicaEste trabalho tem como objetivo estudar a obra integral para violão solo do compositor brasileiro Nestor de Hollanda Cavalcanti, revelando alguns processos composicionais utilizados e suas principais influências musicais. A pesquisa traz um breve levantamento de sua atividade como compositor e arranjador, comentários de suas principais obras e arranjos sem violão, além de sua música de câmara com violão e arranjos que incluem o instrumento. As análises das obras para violão solo revelam certos processos composicionais, como o serialismo digital. Algumas das obras são comparadas com as de outros compositores violonistas brasileiros, como Dilermando Reis, Luiz Bonfá, João Pernambuco e Baden Powell, estabelecendo um paralelo entre a sua escrita e a desses compositores.
This work aims to study the integral works for solo guitar by the Brazilian composer Nestor de Hollanda Cavalcanti, revealing some compositional processes used and his main musical influences. The research presents a brief survey of his activity as a composer and arranger, comments of his major works and arrangements without the guitar in addition to his chamber music with guitar and arrangements that include the instrument. Analyses of works for solo guitar reveal certain compositional processes, such as Digital serialism. Some of the works are compared with those of other Brazilian guitarists composers, including Dilermando Reis, Luiz Bonfá, João Pernambuco and Baden Powell, drawing a parallel between his writing and that of these composers.

La presente tesis doctoral pretende reconstruir un periodo hasta ahora prácticamente desconocido de las biografías de Néstor Luján y de Antonio Vilanova, quienes fueron dos de los intelectuales más distinguidos de la segunda mitad del s.XX en nuestro país. Se trata de la etapa de adolescencia y juventud, que es cuando se forjan sus aprendizajes literarios, en medio de una fatídica guerra civil que asediaba la ciudad de Barcelona. Partimos, en un principio, de dos documentos fundamentales: por un lado, el Diario de 1938 Antonio Vilanova, y por otro, las cartas que en paralelo al Diario, Luján enviaba desde Martorelles.
El análisis de estos dos textos inéditos se centra en las lecturas y en las reseñas literarias que ensayan a modo de pasatiempo a la edad de entre quince y dieciséis años. La importancia de estas primeras lecturas reside en el hecho de que van confeccionando en ellos un primer mapa del gusto y de las tendencias literarias que encaminarán sus pasos como críticos y que condicionarán el principio de sus trayectorias profesionales.
Las conclusiones que extraemos de este primer estudio establecen:
- Las convergencias y divergencias en los criterios, en las opiniones y en las preferencias de uno y otro, perfilando ya su personalidad como críticos. De ahí, de estos textos de adolescencia, empiezan a despuntar las direcciones que adoptarán posteriormente en la etapa posterior, en la que publican ya sus primeros artículos.
- Demostrar que estamos ante la última generación que pudo leer y empaparse sin restricciones (previamente y durante la guerra civil) de la literatura universal moderna y contemporánea, así como de los grandes nombres y títulos de las letras; unas lecturas que a partir del franquismo
quedaron censuradas por el nuevo canon impuesto. Además, pertenecen a una generación que todavía pudo leer (la posterior no tendría ya esa suerte) literatura universal en catalán.
Estos primeros aprendizajes son fundamentales a la hora de realizar el estudio de su etapa universitaria, en la que se centra esta tesis doctoral a partir de su segundo capítulo. De este periodo analizamos varios puntos que resultan esenciales en la consolidación y la ampliación de los aprendizajes literarios adquiridos por Luján y Vilanova durante la guerra civil:
- El estado de decadencia de la Universidad en los años 40 permite, en consecuencia, la creación de un grupo de jóvenes que se reúnen con frecuencia para paliar las carencias de la docencia universitaria. Consideramos a este grupo, conocido como grupo Guinea, un enlace (también una resistencia en la inmediata posguerra) con la cultura, las humanidades y las letras anterior al 36.
- Es en esta etapa cuando empiezan a ejercer por primera vez como críticos que publican asiduamente sus reseñas; lo hacen en una serie de revistas de ideología falangista vinculadas al S.E.U.: Alerta, Qvadrante y Estilo. Será gracias a estas publicaciones cuando empiezan a darse a conocer, a consolidar sus aprendizajes anteriores y a forjarse un prestigio que les abrirá las puertas al semanario Destino.
- La Universidad supone, asimismo, establecer los primeros contactos con personalidades ya consolidadas en el panorama de las letras barcelonesas, al tiempo que experimentan sus primeras relaciones sentimentales.
Se trata, pues, como decíamos de una reconstrucción biográfica de los primeros aprendizajes literarios de Antonio Vilanova y Néstor Luján; una etapa en la que se configura una base de conocimientos literarios que se
proyectará en su trayectoria posterior, cuando lograrán definirse como dos de los críticos más distinguidos de la segunda mitad del s.XX.The present thesis seeks to throughly reconstruct the initial and incipient literary formation and learning period of two of the most influential and relevant intellectuals of the second half of the 20th century, Nestor Lujan and Antonio Vilanova. The initial and pivotal basis to carry out the aforementioned investigation required a profound study of two essential documents: the 1938 personal diary of Vilanova and the letters he simultaneously wrote and sent to his longtime, childhood friend from Martorelles. The initial timeframe of this thesis is set within the turmoil and conflict of the civil war. The definite conclusions of this doctoral thesis regarding the aforementioned initial period are succinctly listed below. * The creation of an initial theoretical framework of criterion and preferences that will profoundly influence the subsequent directions the work of both critics will take. * To conclusively demonstrate that the generation of these critics was the last allowed to read and learn restriction free and without censorship, as from the year 39, the dictatorship imposes a new literary canon and prohibits the reading of fundamental and traditional all-time classics. This investigation also analyses and includes the study of Vilanova's college years, period which is exhaustively studied from the second chapter of this thesis. From this timeframe we examine the following: * The decadent state of the University in the forties, and as a direct consequence of this, the creation of the Guinea group, which sought, through its frequent literary gatherings, to make up for the aforementioned educational shortcomings.

The main goal of this diploma thesis is evaluation of the company Nestlé Česko, s.r.o. which refers to 31. 12. 2012. The valuation process is based on publicly available data such as annual reports of the company. The diploma thesis consists of two main part, theoretical and practical. The theoretical part provides explanation and description of methods and aproaches used in this particular valuation process. The practical part begins with company introduction, followed by strategic and financial analysis in order to analyze the environment and financial health of the company. After that the value drivers are planned and on this basis the financial plan for the period 2013 -- 2017 is formulated. The financial plan is key for evaluation of the company using the combination of DCF entity method and the EVA method.

Com o intuito de reduzir a incidência de acidentes no trânsito, em 19 de junho de 2008 foi promulgada a Lei n 11.705, que enrijece as penalidades aplicadas às pessoas que dirigem sob efeito de bebidas alcoólicas. O presente trabalho trata do impacto sobre a demanda por cervejas subsequente à aprovação da referida lei, cujas punições nela declaradas representam uma internalização de custos que o indivíduo infrator impõe à sociedade. Nesse sentido, buscando inibir o comportamento nocivo à sociedade, a lei gerou incentivos para a queda na demanda por cervejas - bebida alcoólica mais consumida entre os brasileiros. O impacto sobre a compra desses produtos é mostrado neste trabalho, também são estimadas uma função de demanda e elasticidades a partir de um modelo Nested com o objetivo de obter-se um imposto que produziria efeitos equivalentes sobre a queda na quantidade vendida.In order to reduce the incidence of traffic accidents, the Law No. 11,705 was enacted in June 19, 2008, hardening the penalties applied to people who drive under influence of alcohol. This paper deals with the impact on the demand for beers subsequent to the approval of that law, which stablished punishments in due to internalization of costs that the offender individual imposes on society. In this sense, seeking to inhibit the harmful behavior to society, the law created incentives for the drop in demand for beer - the most consumed alcohol drinking in Brazil . The impact on the purchase of these products is shown in this paper, the demand elasticities estimated from a nested model in order to obtain a tax that would produce the equivalent effect of the fall in the quantity demanded.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo estudar a obra de Nestor Duarte produzida entre os anos 1930 e 1940, fundamentalmente em dois aspectos: sua representação da figura do sertanejo e sua proposta de modernização nacional. Partindo da análise de sua produção intelectual e de sua atuação política no referido período, tentamos demonstrar o vínculo entre estes dois aspectos de sua obra e qual o sentido que tal vínculo assumia no referido contexto. Neste sentido, nos parece que a representação que Duarte opera dos sertanejos adquire uma dupla intenção: produzi-los tanto como signo de uma pretendida nacionalidade quanto como sujeitos situados às margens da história, atrasados , numa palavra. Já sua proposta de modernização visava justamente resolver tal questão: o devir moderno da nação se passa pela colocação destes sertanejos na linha da história. O que tentamos demonstrar é como o discurso sertanista de Nestor Duarte trabalha numa ambivalência que tanto afirma quanto nega os sertanejos . Da mesma forma, tentamos por em relevo como sua proposta de modernização nacional atualiza e/ou reforça o discurso da necessidade de ser moderno. O que pretendemos mostrar é, em dada medida, a ligação entre saber e poder, o problema do discurso identitário e a questionável pretensão universal dos postulados modernos (especialmente em sua dimensão política)

Nested Microgrids refers to the interconnection of multiple microgrids into one network. Theyare connected through the Nested Microgrid Network which forms the electrical link betweenthem and facilitates power exchange.In this thesis the concept of Nested Microgrids is investigated. This resulted in theconceptualization of three different implementation methods. Inter-microgrid interaction in termsof controllers and required communication is also analyzed. The functions would differ from anormal microgrid and they are discussed thoroughly in this report. Real life projects are alsopresented.The efficacy and implementation of the proposed control functions are verified with time-domainsimulations. Four microgrid control functions, islanding, resynchronization, feeder load shed ongenerator overload and black start are investigated in Nested Microgrid scenarios. Differentcontrol strategies and exchange of information among the microgrid controllers are proposed forstable Nested Microgrids operation. This project provides the ground work for future work toexpand upon the theory provided and apply it into practical scenarios.Nested Microgrids (nästlade mikronät) hänvisar till sammankoppling av flera mikronät i ettnätverk. De är anslutna via ett Nested Microgrid Network som bildar den elektriska kopplingenmellan dem och underlättar effektutbytet.I denna avhandling undersöks begreppet Nested Microgrids. Detta har resulterat ikonceptualisering av tre olika integreringsmetoder. Interaktion mellan mikronät i form avstyrenheter samt nödvändig datakommunikation analyseras också. Kontrollfunktionerna kommeratt skilja sig från ett normalt mikronät, och dessa diskuteras grundligt i denna rapport. Verkligaprojekt presenteras också.Funktionaliteten och implementeringen av de föreslagna styrfunktionerna verifieras medtidsdomänsimuleringar. Fyra styrfunktioner för mikronät undersöks i scenarier med NestedMicrogrids; Islanding, Resynchronization, Feeder Load Shed on Generator Overload och BlackStart. Olika kontrollstrategier och utbyte av information mellan mikronätens styrenheter föreslåsför stabil kapslade microgrids drift. Projektet ligger till grund för det framtida arbetet att utökateorin och tillämpa den i praktiska situationer.

Sequenced and nonsequenced semantics are the two previously researched semantics for the evaluation of an operation in a temporal database such as a query or data modification. Sequenced semantics evaluates an operation in each time instant using only the data alive at that time. Nonsequenced semantics, in contrast, means that an operation explicitly references and manipulates the timestamps in the data.
In this thesis we propose a new framework that shows both semantics are variants of a general temporal semantics. We present the general semantics and show how additional semantics, such as preceding semantics can be realized. The semantics are specified using annotations.
The primary contribution of this theses is the translation from temporal SQL to nested SQL. We focus on SQL's SELECT statement, which is used to query data. Temporal SQL is SQL annotated with temporal semantics. Nested SQL is SQL for non-1NF data, with additional operations, such as COGROUP and FLATTEN to create and un-nest, respectively, bags of tuples (non-1NF data). This thesis develops a denotational semantics for translating from temporal to nested SQL. We implemented the denotational semantics for an SQLite ANTLR grammar, and the thesis also reports on the implementation.

This work is about developing an estimation procedure for nested logit models that optimizes over the nesting structure in addition to the model parameters. Current estimation practices require an a priori specification of a nesting structure. We formulate the problem of learning an optimal nesting structure as a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) optimization problem and solve it using a variant of the linear outer approximation algorithm. We demonstrate that it is indeed possible to recover the nesting structure directly from the data by applying our method to synthetic and real datasets.

A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and EconomicsThe aim of this research about cereal flakes category is to understand through the consumer characteristics, purchasing behaviour and perceptions about the product category, why some of consumers switch from Nestum to private label brands. Through focus group with the young consumers and questionnaires to their parents, it was found that household income and family size are not the features that impact on private label purchasing intention and the price is not the key buying decision factor. Additionally, young consumers do not see each brand as unique, but their parents notice Nestum as being the best brand. It was demonstrated that the main myths about private label brands consumption are not applied in this product category.

To reduce predation on their progeny, passerines evolved two basic nesting patterns: (1) concealing nests or constructing them in inaccessible places, or (2) breeding inside cavities where offspring are relatively protected. These two nesting patterns seem to lead to different length of nesting cycle. Nice (1957) was the first to report that cavity-nesting species have a longer nestling period than open-nesting species. Why does such a difference in nestling period exist? The goals of my study were: (1) to verify the earlier observation that cavity nesters have a longer nestling period than open nesters; (2) to test the assumption that predation is more intense on nest contents of open nesters than cavity nesters, thereby presenting an important selective force favoring different lengths of the nestling periods of the two groups; and (3) to test two hypotheses on the occurrence of different length of nestling periods between the two groups of passerines. The future of global water supply and availability is one of the most important questions facing life on earth today, and experts agree that the most pressing angle to approach the question from is its governance. However, water represents one of the worlds broadest and most complex fields of governance due to its cross thematic and cross-boundary reach, as well as an increase in new actors through privatisation and transnational corporate influence. In order to actively implement new governance approaches the current system, its actors, connections and influence strategies must be identified. This study combines three theoretical and methodological approaches to study our current global water governance structure: Neo-Gramscian, Network analysis and Policy Entrepreneurship. The Neo-Gramscian influence theory is used to identify 3 types of connections between actors. The resulting data is then used for network analysis to identify the key actors within the field. Once these key actors have been identified, all Nestlé (as a case study for transnational corporations) connections to said actors and the field of water governance have been highlighted under the combined theoretical lenses of Neo-Gramscian influence and Policy Entrepreneurial strategies. These three theories are used in conjunction for several reasons: All three theories represent a different perspective of analysing the decentralised, large scale governance of a complex system. While network analysis allows for the visual representation of the governance “space” and for the identification of key actors and their connections, the Neo-Gramscian and policy entrepreneur approaches give insight into how these connections might be used and created in order to lead to a position of influence within the system. The results show a list of 42 key actors to whom Nestlé has a large number of self-reported connections across all 3 influence types. It further shows that Nestle actively uses at least 3 of the 4 entrepreneurial strategies on some of these connections. This suggests that Nestlé may have some significant influence in global water governance. The study is also a proof of concept for the synthesis of the three complementary theories.

Cette thèse s'intéresse à l'usage des formalismes d'inférence profonde comme fondement des interprétations calculatoires des systèmes de preuve, en suivant les deux approches principales: celle des preuves comme programmes et celle de la recherche de preuve comme calcul. La première contribution est le développement d'une famille de systèmes de preuve pour la logique intuitionniste dans le calcul des structures et dans les séquents imbriqués. Pour lesquels des procédures de normalisation internes sont fournies. L'une de ces procédures est alors interprétée en termes calculatoires, comme un raffinement de la correspondance de Curry-Howard permettant d'introduire une forme de partage ainsi que des opérateurs de communication dans un lambda-calcul avec substitution explicite. Du coté de la recherche de preuve, la notion de preuve focalisée en logique linéaire est transférée du calcul des séquents au calcul des structures, où elle induit une forme incrémentale de focalisation, dotée d'une preuve de complétude très simple. Enfin, une autre interprétation de la recherche de preuve est donnée par l'encodage de la réduction d'un lambda-calcul avec substitution explicite dans les règles d'inférence d'un sous-système de la logique intuitionniste dans le calcul des structuresThis thesis investigates the use of deep inference formalisms as basis for a computational interpretation of proof systems, following the two main approaches: proofs-as-programs and proof-search-as-computation. The first contribution is the development of a family of proof systems for intuitionistic logic in the calculus of structures and in nested sequents, for which internal normalisation procedures are given. One of these procedure is then interpreted in terms of computation, as a refinement of the Curry-Howard correspondence allowing to introduce a form of sharing and communication operators in a lambda-calculus with explicit substitution. On the side of proof-search, the notion of focused proof in linear logic is transferred from the sequent calculus into the calculus of structures, where it yields an incremental form of focusing, with a simple proof of completeness. Finally, another interpretation of proof-search is given through the encoding of reduction in a lambda-calculus with explicit substitution into the inference rules of a subsystem of intuitionistic logic in the calculus of structures

Multi-Terminal Source Coding (MTSC) addresses the problem of compressing correlated sources without communication links among them. In this thesis, the constructive approach of this problem is considered in an algebraic framework and a system design is provided that can be applicable in a variety of settings. Wyner-Ziv problem is first investigated: coding of an independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) Gaussian source with side information available only at the decoder in the form of a noisy version of the source to be encoded. Theoretical models are first established and derived for calculating distortion-rate functions. Then a few novel practical code implementations are proposed by using the strategy of multi-dimensional nested lattice/trellis coding. By investigating various lattices in the dimensions considered, analysis is given on how lattice properties affect performance. Also proposed are methods on choosing good sublattices in multiple dimensions. By introducing scaling factors, the relationship between distortion and scaling factor is examined for various rates. The best high-dimensional lattice using our scale-rotate method can achieve a performance less than 1 dB at low rates from the Wyner-Ziv limit; and random nested ensembles can achieve a 1.87 dB gap with the limit. Moreover, the code design is extended to incorporate with distributed compressive sensing (DCS). Theoretical framework is proposed and practical design using nested lattice/trellis is presented for various scenarios. By using nested trellis, the simulation shows a 3.42 dB gap from our derived bound for the DCS plus Wyner-Ziv framework.
