Abstract:
This article reports the results of a nested analysis conducted to evaluate whether or not electoral donations are considered legal bribes. Introduced by Lieberman, nested analysis brings together the strengths of the regression analysis and the case study research by integrating large- N approaches (LNA) with small- N approaches (SNA). The nested analysis uses a sequential sampling model (QUANTITATIVE → QUALITATIVE) and a nested sampling design (case selection “on/off the line”). Here, Lieberman’s original model was extended to deal with an apparent paradox that emerged from the analysis. This inquiry included a cross-national examination among 78 countries, denoted as LNA, followed by an intranational analysis conducted in Colombia, where an SNA survey with 302 respondents and an SNA case study were carried out.

Abstract:
The nested logit model has become an important tool for the empirical analysis of discrete outcomes. There is some confusion about its specification of the outcome probabilities. Two major variants show up in the literature. This paper compares both and finds that one of them (called random utility maximization nested logit, RUMNL) is preferable in most situations. Since the command nlogit of Stata 7.0 implements the other variant (called non-normalized nested logit, NNNL), an implementation of RUMNL called nlogitrum is introduced. Numerous examples support and illustrate the differences between both specifications.

Abstract:
AbstractWe examine the preferences of respondents for six types of payment instruments, namely cash, debit and credit cards, card and server-based electronic money, and internet or mobile banking. By applying a nested logit model to 500 household data covering six provincial capitals in Indonesia, we find that the decision to choose payment instruments is made sequentially. Socio-economic characteristics, including education, age, income, and transaction objectives or functionality have a significant effect on the probability of using non-cash electronic payment instruments. We find a substitution pattern between payment instruments, not only between cash and non-cash instruments but also between non-cash instruments. In light of these findings, appropriate payment system policies are in order to hasten the use of non-cash payment.

Abstract:
We analyze a construction for optimal nested group-testing procedures, and show that, when individuals are independently positive with probability p, the expected number of tests per positive individual, F*(p), has, as p→0, the asymptotic behavior $$F^{\ast}(p) = \log_2 {1\over p} + \log_2 \log 2 + 2 + f\left(\log_2 {1\over p} + \log_2 \log 2\right) + O(p),$$ where $$f(z) = 4\times 2^{-2^{1-\{z\}}} - \{z\} - 1,$$ and {z}=z−⌊z⌋ is the fractional part of z. The function f(z) is a periodic function (with period 1) that exhibits small oscillations (with magnitude <0.005) about an even smaller average value (<0.0005).
