O objetivo desta comunicação é fortalecer a consciência crítica e apelar para a necessidade urgente de se pensar e agir contra as formas de barbárie presentes na sociedade. CRITICAL, AUTHONOMOUS AND EMANCIPATORY THINKING TODAY IN BRAZIL The Brazilian reality made urgent the task put by Kant to think critically and autonomously. There are many symptoms that we currently live under a regime of barbarism and denial of autonomy, such as the compulsive negation of reality, the empire of ideology and doxa, widespread prejudice against science, fundamentalist dogmatism, the rise neofascism and violence, the brutalization of middle classes, the colonization of minds and hearts through the perverted use of religion. The purpose of this communication is precisely to strengthen critical awareness and to appeal to the urgent need to think and act against the forms of barbarism present in society.

Abstract:

We live in a time of paranoid borderism, a time of intense paranoia of the Other, and a time where the privileging of the nation state as the symbolic container of space, our territory, seems to have made a lurid return to the European continent. The consequences of this socio-spatial ordering and othering, the legacy of Euclidian thinking, and Cartesian models of knowing the world, can become an extreme geography: a form of cartographic cleansing that seriously needs to be addressed. In this short response to the Fennia Lecture given by Professor Henk van Houtum on Extreme Geographies, I offer a report from a region that has become a dependent semi-periphery of the new largely neoliberal Europe that emerged post-1989: a new Europe that is now entering a post-neoliberal era and is becoming increasingly neofascist. I draw from this region as a warning from history, and argue that the hopeful politics of the New Left in the former Yugoslavia provide an answer. The New Left, as it has been termed, in the Post-Yugoslav space, articulates the need for a new radically democratic European project: a project that is no longer neoliberal, but equally a project that does not turn to a nostalgic nationalism, a neofascism, or indeed any other form of authoritarian capitalism.

Este estudo tem como objetivo identificar os/as pesquisadores/as brasileiros/as que estão tomando o ‘neofascismo’ como objeto de estudo, analisando em que disciplinas ancoram suas análises e quais contribuições eles têm feito para apontar caminhos na elucidação deste fenômeno. Logo, foi realizado um mapeamento, de abordagem qualitativa, descritivo-exploratória sobre o tema ‘neofascismo’ no Currículo Lattes de pesquisadores doutores que se dedicam sobre o tema no Brasil. Usou-se a palavra-chave ‘neofascismo’ no campo principal da ‘busca simples’, cujo modo de busca utilizado foi ‘assunto (título ou palavra-chave na produção)’. Identificou-se que, dos 100% (21) dos pesquisadores encontrados, 71,5% (15) são homens, e, dos 100% (108) das citações do termo ‘neofascismo’, 34,5% (37) concentram-se em uma única pesquisadora. A área de História Geral ou Especializada é a principal disciplina de ancoragem. As produções científicas sobre o neofascismo puderam ser divididas em quatro blocos: “os trabalhos que procuram uma delimitação da categoria neofascismo”; “os que historicizam o uso da categoria neofascismo”; “os que aplicam o neofascismo a uma conjuntura doméstica” e “os que identificam/descrevem grupos e práticas neofascistizantes”. Por fim, são delimitadas as diferenças entre as ‘práticas conservadoras’ das ‘práticas neofascistizantes’ e são identificadas algumas características da retórica neofascista.

Abstract This article is based on an empirical study of ‘the antifascist kick’ as a formative cultural practice in the history of transnational antifascism. It scopes from the 1930s and the era of opposition to classic fascism, through to the twenty-first century where antifascism encounters political processes of globalization, fragmentation, neoliberalism, and neofascism. The article discusses the ‘antifascist kick’ in different historical contexts, from 1930s Sweden to Germany and the United States today. The article reveals that ‘the antifascist kick’ works in various cultural directions: as a political conception of those who are only worth contempt, as a symbolic representation of the antifascist struggle, and as a practical instruction for how to treat fascists in the streets.

Abstract In the early 1980s, British fascism was reeling from the failure of the National Front (NF) to build on the brief swells of support it attracted in the 1970s through its crude ethnic populism. Enter a group of young radicals who, via a series of splits, gained control of the party and pushed it in a startlingly new direction. As the decade wore on these radicals embraced ideas that would have confused or even horrified their (essentially neo-Nazi) predecessors, promoting a global “Third Way” vision that borrowed heavily first from esoteric continental influences and then, increasingly, from radical Islamic ideologues like Louis Farrakhan and Muammar Qathafi. This article explains how this unusual variant of neofascism emerged in the political context of the 1980s and interrogates its transnational credentials in order to understand the extent and sincerity of this reinvention, so as to find the Third Way NF an appropriate place in the history of contemporary fascism(s).

AbstractThis article examines whether and how the figure of Adolf Hitler in particular, and National Socialism more generally, operate as moral exemplars in today’s Germany. In conversation with similar studies about Mosely in England, Franco in Spain, and Mussolini in Italy, it seeks to advance our comparative understanding of neofascism in Europe and beyond. In Germany, legal and discursive constraints limit what can be said about the Third Reich period, while even far-right nationalists often condemn Hitler, for either the Holocaust or his military failure. Here I revise the concept of moral exemplarity as elaborated by Caroline Humphry to argue that Hitler and National Socialism do nevertheless work as contemporary exemplars, in at least three fashions: negativity, substitution, and extension. First, they stand as the most extreme markers of negative exemplarity for broad publics that understand them as illustrations of absolute moral depravity. Second, while Hitler himself is widely unpopular, Führer-substitutes such as Rudolf Hess provide alternative figures that German nationalists admire and seek to emulate. Finally, by extension to the realm of the ordinary, National Socialism introduces a cast of exemplars in the figures of loving grandfathers or anonymous fallen soldiers. The moral values for which they stand, I show, appear to be particularly significant for young nationalists. An extended, more open-ended notion of exemplarity, I conclude, can offer important insights about the lingering afterlife of fascist figures in the moral life of European nationalists today.

Abstract:

This article engages new histories of the black frontline communities of the Underground Railroad to rethink both fugitive democracy and the transformative possibilities of sanctuary as its constitutive twin. We analyze the ways that communities of free blacks and fugitives in the border zones between the Antebellum US North and South crafted themselves as magnetic spaces of creative refuge that suggest we reconceive sanctuary as the generative twin of fugitivity. This insight enables us to theorize new ethical and political dimensions of Sheldon Wolin’s concept fugitive democracy by illuminating how fugitivity as flight away from danger can be interwoven with sanctuary as flight into and toward alternatives. Specifically, we theorize three dimensions of fugitive democracy/transformative sanctuary—sanctuary tending, dramatic sanctuary, and disruptive hospitality. While some theorists have considered key motifs in Wolin’s fugitive democracy to be opposed to vital themes disclosed in contemporary theories of black fugitivity, we argue that the power of black frontline communities stemmed precisely from their capacities to dynamically entangle political approaches (mis)taken to be at odds. For example, we suggest a theory and practice of tending involving both nurturing care and militantly defensive action, dramatic sanctuary performances that amplify public power by oscillating between tricky concealment and flagrant publicity, and disruptive hospitality that interweaves law-breaking harbor with strategies for juridical and institutional change. These insights open onto an alternative imaginary that can also provide a toolbox for building grassroots democratic power today, particularly in the face of emergent neofascism and escalating displacement worldwide.

O objetivo deste artigo é sustentar o argumento de que a força do negacionismo científico e a normalização da morte na condução da pandemia da Covid-19 no Brasil foram possíveis na medida em que, nos últimos anos, foi atribuído ao presidente do Brasil, Jair Bolsonaro, por interesses e agentes sociais diversos, o papel de liderança e autoridade responsável pela purificação da política, da economia e da nação. É por conseguir se firmar nesse polo da purificação e de restabelecimento de um regime de verdade supostamente perdido que sua estratégia de “fazer viver e deixar morrer” encontrou apoio ativo ou passivo em parte expressiva da sociedade brasileira. A pesquisa abarca produções textuais diversas e pronunciamentos oficiais e informais dos agentes sociais em questão. Para analisá-los, foram mobilizadas teorias sociais, especialmente da sociologia, no intuito de identificar os agentes, as ideologias e os registros discursivos que produzem significados sobre a vida e a morte. Como resultado, é possível afirmar que o objetivo do governo de fazer o vírus circular, traçado como meta implícita e explícita desde o início da pandemia, exigiu uma normalização de mortes evitáveis que apenas a linguagem neofascista, capaz de produzir um sentido alternativo de vida mais autêntica e pura, pôde lograr até aqui. Il saggio ricostruisce nei suoi caratteri essenziali il contesto della stampa satirica italiana dal secondo dopoguerra agli anni sessanta. L'autore sostiene che la notevole fioritura di giornali satirici nella seconda metŕ degli anni quaranta sia da ricondurre al perdurare di una tradizione satirica che anche durante il fascismo era rimasta forte. Proprio il peso di questa tradizione, secondo l'autore, contribuě al fatto che a poco a poco le riviste orientate a sinistra scomparvero e le uniche testate satiriche a restare in circolazione furono di orientamento conservatore o neofascista. Tali giornali tuttavia si rivelarono incapaci di rinnovarsi, tanto che verso la metŕ degli anni sessanta l'intera stampa satirica italiana sparě in pratica dalla circolazione. En un contexto marcado por la crisis económica y el sentimiento general de desafección hacia las democracias liberales, las formaciones de extrema derecha europeas están en auge. En gran medida, estas organizaciones enarbolan un discurso renovado (heredero de la Nouvelle Droite), que se vertebra en torno a una identidad nacional supuestamente amenazada y al rechazo a las élites y al sistema político imperante. En este artículo se estudia el discurso de la organización neofascista española Hogar Social, con el fin de comprobar su adecuación a estos nuevos planteamientos de las formaciones de extrema derecha europeas. Para ello se ha analizado, aplicando una metodología cualitativa, una muestra de las publicaciones de esta organización en su página de la red social Facebook. Los resultados destacan el protagonismo que en el discurso de Hogar Social tiene la denuncia de un supuesto proceso de decadencia cultural, inducido por las élites, y caracterizado por una serie de elementos como el cambio en los roles de género, la inmigración, la amenaza islámica y la división de la comunidad nacional. A modo de solución, se propone la unión y la movilización de la España trabajadora, con el fin de recuperar los derechos arrebatados. Así, el artículo demuestra que Hogar Social utiliza un discurso que se adecúa, en gran medida, a las propuestas de las nuevas formaciones de extrema derecha europeas.

Argentina became a laboratory for a neofascist project. The country’s long and deeply rooted tradition of Peronism, its Nazi and Fascist connections, and the authoritarian and totalitarian regimes that took hold in the country during the second half of the twentieth century all help explain why Argentina offered fertile ground for this neofascist project. This article explores how Italians who migrated to Argentina for political reasons, and in search of a new fatherland, as described by Federica Bertagna, Marco Tarchi and other scholars, shaped the political debate in Argentina during the period between 1946 and the beginning of the dictatorship. It also considers how this political community established relations with other neofascist actors, individuals and groups, around the globe and with former fascist and Nazi militants who lived in Argentina.

Tendo como ponto de partida pesquisas que caracterizam o governo de Bolsonaro como neofascista, o objetivo deste artigo é examinar a produção cultural e ideológica do movimento neofascista brasileiro a partir de um caso paradigmático: as ideias de Abraham Weintraub, ex-ministro da Educação, aluno de Olavo de Carvalho e importante quadro do bolsonarismo. A análise do material de observação, isto é, palestras promovidas em eventos conservadores e pronunciamentos oficiais e informais feitos por Weintraub, é realizada à luz de elementos da ideologia e do movimento fascista destacados pela literatura marxista – anticomunismo, crítica superficial ao capitalismo e à democracia burguesa, culto da violência, irracionalismo, nacionalismo autoritário e conservador e participação das classes médias na formação do movimento. A articulação desses elementos no discurso de Weintraub dão forma a uma espécie de “interpretação neofascista da Nova República”, na qual essa é concebida como um “mecanismo” montado para beneficiar e concentrar o poder político e econômico nas mãos da elite oligarca e comunista.

Memory of the period of political violence known as the anni di piombo continues to form part of the neofascist-antifascist antagonism in contemporary Italy. One of the most notable tragedies from that time occurred in Rome on 16 April 1973, when Stefano and Virgilio Mattei (sons of a local leader of the Movimento Sociale Italiano, MSI) died in an arson attack on the family home. In the wake of the attack, a campaign of misinformation and a failed judicial process created an incorrect but dominant narrative that implicated the MSI in the fire that killed Stefano and Virgilio. This article examines the subsequent construction of a counter-memory by the MSI leadership, who immediately cast the attack as a party tragedy and the deaths as martyrdom. It also considers the subsequent antagonistic approach to remembering adopted by neofascist groups in commemoration of the Mattei brothers following the dissolution of the MSI in 1995, and the ongoing incorporation of the brothers’ memory into fascist martyrology dating back to Mussolini's regime.

Com a recente ascensão das direitas no Brasil, que culminou com a eleição de Jair Bolsonaro, assim como de outros líderes da extrema direita, coloca-se em questão os impactos dessas novas formatações no campo político e partidário brasileiro, assim como quais são os pressupostos e filiações ideológicas. Além de categorias como “novas direitas”, termos como “neofascismo” são utilizados indiscriminadamente para interpretar expressões e grupos dos mais distintos. A fim de colocar esses aspectos em questão, o artigo tem o propósito de apresentar um apanhado das relações entre grupelhos neofascistas e forças político-partidárias no Brasil. Analisando desde a transição democrática até a eleição de Bolsonaro, o artigo coloca em análise as aproximações e disputas existente entre grupelhos neofascistas e agremiações partidárias, a fim de compreender as diversas disputas existentes dentro do campo da extrema direita brasileira ao longo da “nova república”.

A manera de homenaje, en este espacio ofrecemos dos profundos ensayos de Jorge Beinstein, de ahí el nombre que hemos elegido para presentarlos en este número de Estudios Latinoamericanos. Ambos escritos dan cuenta de lo que el autor denomina “la ilusión del metacontrol imperial del caos” en tiempos de la peor fase de la relación entre capitalismo y decadencia, para exponerla como fundamento de la tendencia contemporánea al neofascismo mundial. Periodiza la compleja relación entre la economía y el sistema militar de Estado Unidos, contrastando lo que se conoce como “keynesianismo militar” o “economía de guerra permanente”, con una fase ulterior poskeynesiana. Mientras la fase del keynesianismo militar es caracterizada como una etapa en la cual el crecimiento de la economía militar funciona como una fuerza de arrastre propulsora del nivel de empleo y la prosperidad general, la fase poskeynesiana se escudriña mostrando, desde finales de los noventa, que el ascenso de los gastos de orden militar ya no produce el mismo impacto, de suerte que deriva en déficit fiscal y endeudamiento sin contribuir de ningún modo el aumento neto del nivel de empleo en Estados Unidos.

O fascismo é uma forma política do regime capitalista, posta em prática quando as classes dominantes veem ameaçado seu controle sobre o processo político-eleitoral; é assim abandonado o discurso liberalista-formal, com que em tempos de “estabilidade” do capitalismo, adornam de “democrático” seu sistema autoritário. Com o aprofundamento da crise estrutural capitalista – fenômeno que se explicita há décadas, resultando em frequentes crises econômicas, sociais, ambientais –, uma retirada brusca de direitos sociais torna-se crucial para a manutenção dos lucros do capital. Na América Latina, este processo, direta ou indiretamente impulsionado pelos EUA e UE, interrompe cerca de dez anos de governos reformistas. Por outro lado, é importante atentar a uma peculiaridade: ao contrário do que ocorreu no “fascismo clássico”, e em algum grau dá-se ainda no centro do sistema, em periferias do capitalismo nas quais não se desenvolveu uma burguesia nacional, caso das nações latino-americanas, os fascistas (como as classes altas de modo geral) não se identificam com a nação onde habitam, não sendo “nacionalistas” nem mesmo em um restrito sentido elitista. Ademais, o racismo, historicamente relacionado ao fascismo, em nossa América mestiça ganha enorme centralidade.
