Abstract:
In this work flow properties of dendrimers are studied with the aid of molecular simulations. For the first time the results of the nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations of the dendrimers in the melt are reported. Molecules are modelled at the coarse-grained level using the bead-spring model. The objective of this research is to analyse the influence of the molecular topology in the macroscopic flow behaviour of the melts. Systems of dendrimers of generations 1 to 4 undergoing planar shear are compared to the melts composed of linear chain polymers. The internal structure and shape of dendrimers is extensively analysed. The response of the molecules to the shearing in the form of stretching and alignment is studied. The correlation between the onset of shear thinning and the onset of deformation of molecules is observed. The changes in the fractal dimensionality of dendrimers due to shearing are also analysed. Dendrimers, due to their highly branched structure and compact globular conformations in the melt, are found to behave differently when sheared, compared to traditional linear polymers. Unlike linear polymers, they do not undergo transition form the Rouse to the reptation regimes. This effect is explained in terms of the suppressed entanglement between molecules. Moreover, dendrimers when compared to linear chain systems exhibit lower Newtonian viscosity, onset of the shear thinning at higher strain rates, and less pronounced shear thinning in the non-Newtonian regime. They can be used as rheology modifiers, as it is shown in the preliminary results obtained from the simulations of the dendrimers-linear polymer blends. In agreement with other theoretical and experimental studies, dendrimers in the melt are found to have compact space-filling structure with terminal groups distributed throughout the interior of the molecule. Suggestions for the further study of dendrimers via molecular simulations are made.

Abstract:
The intent of this thesis is to create a literary fiction collection centered on diverse adolescent girls. In recent years, women writers have moved away from the domestic sphere of authors whose writing focused solely on the daily lives of women, and have begun penning epic stories and novels whose themes were previously tackled by men alone. Authors show that the craft of expansive and immersive literary fiction transcends gender, allowing women more freedom with the types of stories they choose to write. That’s not to say that domestic fiction is unimportant or "less than" other types of literary fiction, however. The difference is in choice—women are free to create works in other genres, forms, and conventions separate from domestic fiction, but can also reclaim and reinvent the genre to show the importance of everyday women. Each story in this collection highlights the complex lives of adolescent girls while exploring universal themes of women from a literary fiction rather than young adult fiction perspective. Issues such as sexuality, virginity, and popularity—which all girls experience at least tangentially—are often relegated to young adult fiction. Their purpose is to build a relationship of trust between characters and readers who are experiencing the same confusing period. Literary fiction allows deeper exploration into these issues, showing how larger psychological and societal problems result in adolescent physical manifestations, such as the sexualization and commodification of women’s bodies. This thesis will add to the current literary conversation by highlighting teenage girls, a demographic whose importance is often downplayed by modern society.

Abstract:
This thesis explores how planning for sustainable development can be enhanced in Australia with a particular focus on strategic plans. Today, the concept of sustainable development has not been fully operationalised into plans; market and political forces still play a predominant role in planning practice. Nevertheless, some authors believe that the concept of sustainable development has reinvigorated planning. For example, there is an extensive literature on this topic within planning theory, although in practice, sustainable development has been difficult to implement. This thesis after acknowledging the relevance of economy and politics, provides an alternative approach to operationalise sustainable development in plans through a technical perspective. This perspective is based on the examination, from literature, of several techniques which deal with sustainable development. The central idea is that these techniques can be embraced under one concept,

Abstract:
Need is a concept that carries intuitive appeal in moral decision-making. As it stands, need is relatively under-theorised, given its currency not just in philosophical argumentation but in news coverage, charitable appeals, and political practice. Need claims carry compelling normative force, and they are amenable to widespread support as our most basic needs are some of the things we most transparently share with our fellow human beings. However, how should we understand that normative force? Is need best understood to compel us as a matter of justice? I begin my account by considering the kind of need relevant to the project. I build from an understanding of need as a three-place relation, which is by its nature needing for a purpose. I suggest that morally important needs are those which aim at the objective interests that all people have in virtue of what is good for each of us qua human beings ('non-arbitrary needs'). Further, I distinguish the existentially urgent subset of those non-arbitrary needs as 'basic needs.' Given this understanding, I consider how basic needs theory relates to its conceptual neighbours. I focus on capabilities as the nearest neighbours, but also comment on wants, interests, and rights. I judge that the theories developed by Martha Nussbaum (capabilities) and Len Doyal and Ian Gough (needs) benefit from a complementary reading, with each supplementing the other. I then draw from Amartya Sen's early writings on capabilities to ultimately see capabilities and needs as two sides of the same coin. This helps to situate needs theory in relation to a mainstream branch of political theory more generally, and indicates that we can recognise the special significance of needs without eschewing other morally important categories. I then move to establish a scope of justice that allows us to distinguish between duties of justice and other moral duties. If we think that duties of beneficence are weak and optional, whereas duties of justice are binding and enforceable, a great deal rides on how we characterise our duties to the global poor. I offer a 'moral enforceability' account, claiming that duties of justice are those which are, in principle, morally enforceable. It is the in-principle enforceability of justice duties which gives them teeth. Returning to need, I then ask how another's need comes to give me a moral reason for action. I canvas a range of existing accounts, many of which furnish important insights. I then propose that it is the morally relevant capacities of the being in need which gives them moral status such that their needing is morally significant. We are morally required to answer this need with responsiveness, as a demonstration of appropriate respect for the sort of being that the human in need is. If this is right, we are morally required to be responsive to need, even if we are not always required to reduce it. Finally, I bring the diverse strands of the foregoing argument together to return to the relationship between need and justice. I consider what a duty of responsiveness might amount to in practice, and suggest that our duties of responsiveness are best thought of as collective duties, grounded in the capacity of the global well-off to contribute. Further, I argue that duties of responsiveness are a matter of justice, as they are the sort of duties that are, in principle, morally enforceable. A wide range of threats to the necessary conditions for human flourishing, and even human life, are on the horizon, and many of these are uniquely collective challenges. The seriousness of those challenges, and the extent to which we have treated our responsibilities to those in need as discretionary in the past, means collective action and problem solving are called for when there are no easy answers.

Abstract: This dissertation proposes an extended treatment on the aesthetic and thematic features of songs by Adoniran Barbosa, mainly in his lyrics, which led to interest of cultural agents in the rescue of the "authentic" samba, throughout the process of redefinition of MPB (Brazilian Popular Music), from the 60?s to the late 70?s. In order to do so, the song lyrics presented in his first three LPs were studied: Adoniran Barbosa 1974, Adoniran Barbosa 1975, and Adoniran and Guests 1980. In the period chosen we have questioned what the criteria for choosing the songs were, from the perspective of cultural producers, and analyzed possible influences in the composition of some of these works, according to political, economic and socio-cultural contexts, as well as how several of these songs have been read and understood over twenty years later. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first part consists of two chapters. The first covers the line of development of Adoniran?s work. In this chapter, the artist is contextualized as part of the rationalization process of the cultural industry in Brazil - according to Frankfurt School concepts - and this process, which happens to coincide with a time of great political and ideological tension, during the military regime, is comprehended as the consolidation of a unique and conducive scenario that allows the formation of the renewed MPB. The rescue of the figure of Adoniran at that point, in my view, has a political, ideological and cultural meaning which is very important and unique in the construction and consolidation of Brazilian music and culture. In the second chapter, the main criticisms on the analyzed albums were studied, mostly from newspapers and LP inserts, with the objective to expose how journalists, intellectuals and music critics have influenced the constitution of Adoniran?s presence in the tradition of samba. The second part of the dissertation, also in two different chapters, is the analysis of the lyrics presented in the corpus, aiming to develop the ambiguous character of Adoniran Barbosa?s songs in relation to three recurring debates in the context of renewed MPB: work x truancy; tradition x progress; local sound x universal sound. In the first chapter, the goal is to read Adoniran songs, from a perspective of reception, as resistance to the existing order and work ethics, as they take an opposite direction from the traditional discourse of truancy presented in sambas from Rio. It's a way of resistance, which denounces the universe of suburban work. The second chapter is dedicated to the understanding of the São Paulo elite?s posture of criticism and opposition to an ideal of progress, as they believe the state to be "the locomotive of the country" since the beginning of the century. Also in this chapter, we have presented the aesthetical and ideological debate in the Brazilian music from that period, the 60's and the 70's: on one hand the local, "authentic" and "native/root" sound, represented by the renewed MPB; on the other, the universal, "innovative" and "modern" sound, represented by Jovem Guarda and Tropicália

This paper presents an approach about the representation of women of mixed racein literature, through the main character of the novel "Gabriela, cravo e canela" byJorge Amado (1958). It is important to investigate the portrayal of African-Brazilian women in literature because the patterns presented there are sociallyplayed back. The misrepresentation of black people on the media generalizes racialdiscrimination, a determinant factor of social inequality in Brazil, a country widelymixed. This study is very timely, at a time of discussion intensification aroundaffirmative action establishment, with racial quotas in public universities in thecountry. Until very recently, the presence of black people and mulattos werevirtually zero in literature and other media, except for vague appearances, asadjuncts or antagonists. Currently, the debate on the importance of rescuingAfrican descent history and culture has strengthened, which can be considered abreakthrough, albeit late. Finally, and equally important, the categories gender andclass must be highlighted as determinant factors to discuss racial issues in Brazil.

Abstract:
The aim of the project is to bring a proof of concept of a simplified mass spectrometer architecture using an ultra dense network of NEMS in association with elements of CMOS circuit as sensors in order to amplify the signal in situ and adress them individually. Since several years, Roukes' team at Caltech has demonstrated a mass spectrometry with a NEMS. In parallel, the CEA/LETI-MINATEC has developped a fabrication approach called VLSI of NEMS and an electromecanical simulation method of these elements The first objective of this thesis is to study the noise phenomenon currently limiting our mass resolution in order to reach 10 Da instead of current 1000 Da on ranges going from 10 Da to 1MDa. In a second step, the concept of NEMS-based mass spectrometry is validated by comparison a nanometric cluster spectra with those from a conventional time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Then, a frequency addressing technique is applied on an NEMS array to allow for quasi simultaneous tracking of 20 different resonators. Finally, the NEMS array is inserted in the nanocluster bench to measure 20 spectra in parallel and validate a first proof of concept

_______________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
This dissertation aims to make an interpretation of Gorgias’thought, starting from a translation and a commentary of three of his writings: On Not-Being (in two versions), Encomium of Helen and Defense of Palamedes. It aims, in particular, to investigate Gorgias opposition to the immediate identification between reality/truth, thought and discurse. We believe that the three texts are connected and coherent on the views they show about the link between reality, knowledge and discourse.

This work have as purpose to know, to comprehend and to attend the effort for the introduction of the project the chilean way to socialism idealized by the Communist Party of Chile. This project has purposed the passage from chilean capitalist regime to socialism based on the maintance of the establishment, without insurrections or armed conflicts. Such formulation had a great repercussion in the political project of the Popular Unity, wich had conducted Salvador Allende to Presidency of the Republic in 1970. To accomplish this research it was made use of a bibliography as source about the Popular Unity and about the subject of our research, many documents from the Communist Party, and personal witness by the same way, which constitutes oral source for the studies in History. In the Introduction, we had made a characterization from the Communist Party and from the original project of this research, that will be separated into the first and the second chapters, such as a chilean political and economical contextualization. In Chapter I we had upraised some arguments occurred about the peaceful way to socialism. We had tried even to identify the political development of the Comunist Party along it s policy of alliances and it s fundaments in several presidential elections. In Chapter II we looked forward to reflect how the mentioned questions from the past Chapter will influence the formulation of The Chilean Revolution, it s repercussions among the left-side parties and the for the Popular Unity consolidation to face the 1970´s elections. In Chapter III then we looked forward to analyze, from the Communist Party documents written between 1970 and 1973, the political behavior of the Party in the Alludes government quotidian

Abstract:

This thesis articulates the importance of the use of efficient and effective student data documentation systems as classroom teachers determine the next instructional steps to support their students' abilities to demonstrate independent proficiency within grade level academic material. While operating under the broader structure of a Response to Intervention (RTI) framework, action research methodologies were used to address the question: How can deliberate documentation systems enhance the ongoing performance of an RTI program in a K-4 elementary school setting? This research examines various student data documentation systems, tracks student academic growth, explores the opinions of highly experienced classroom teachers, and discusses the characteristics of effective student data documentation systems. This thesis introduces the pedagogical process of Student Need-Based Education, in which educational decisions are intentionally structured according to the current academic, social-emotional/behavioral, or physical needs of students.

Abstract:
Titel: Individuella skillnader i sensoriska behov: “Need for Scent”, “Need for Sound” och “Need for Vision” skalor.
Title: Individual differences in sensory needs, “Need for Scent”, “Need for Sound” and “Need for Vision” scales: a contribution to theory development, in the subject of sensory marketing.  Level: Final assignment for Bachelor Degrees in Business Administration Author: Emma Ekholm and Alexandra von Schreeb Supervisor: Jonas Kågström Date: 2017 - May Aim: The purpose of our study is to contribute to the field of theory development, in the subject of sensory marketing. The aim of the survey is to analyze how the Need for Touch scale can be converted into other senses, and to be used in multisensory marketing. Method: In this study, a quantitative study was performed and 158 questionnaires were collected from a web-based survey where the scales were tested on the respondents. We analyzed our collected data in the statistical program SPSS and a factor analysis, cluster analysis and a correlation analysis were conducted. Result & Analysis: This study present six different factors from the factor analysis, of which factor one and two made two independent scales, “Need for Scent” and “Need for Sound”. Factor three, four and five all includes vision, and developed a three-dimensional scale “Need for Vision”. This study also present four clusters, where we developed one cluster that exhibited very high-sensory behaviors and a second cluster that exhibited very low-sensory behaviors. Suggestions for future research: Since we found that the senses smell, sound and vision could be formed into three independent scales, future research could use the scales on consumer research. Future research could also study each cluster individually on a deeper level with qualitative interviews. Furthermore, it would be interesting to examine if our scales could be transformed into the sense of taste. Which has not yet been studied. Contribution of the thesis:  The study has contributed to develop the theoretical foundation in the subject of sensory marketing, and by expanding Peck and Childers (2013) “Need for Touch” scale to three new functional scales. We highlighted how it is possible to use scales for scent, sound and vision to measure consumers individual need for scent, sound and vision in regarding product evaluation.

Osborn, Jeremy Lee. "Need fulfillment, well-being, and close relationships: Defining and testing interpersonal need compatibility." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/290044.

Full text
Abstract:
Compatibility is a concept that has enjoyed considerable attention in the arena of close relationship research and has emerged as a consistent factor in the experience of positive relational outcomes such as relationship satisfaction and stability. Despite this attention, however, the treatment of compatibility has generally been limited to domains specific to the studies in which it has been utilized. The present study sought to integrate research and theory in two distinct domains, need fulfillment and compatibility, in an attempt to provide an overarching explanation for findings linking compatibility to relational outcomes based on interpersonal need fulfillment. This task involved two distinct, but related, domains. First, general associations among interpersonal need fulfillment, well-being, and social network structure were examined in an attempt to develop a more refined understanding of the interaction between need fulfillment and specific relationships with respect to overall effects on well-being. Analyses were confined to the consideration of interpersonal needs (those requiring others for fulfillment) and relied on the three-dimensional model proposed by Schutz (1966) and comprised of needs for affection, inclusion, and control. Second, need fulfillment was examined in the context of exclusive romantic relationships, and a form of compatibility based on the interpersonal need levels of the partners was introduced and posited to represent an overarching form of compatibility and a major predictor of relationship satisfaction. Analyses involved 91 couples involved in exclusive romantic relationships and 105 individuals who were not involved in exclusive relationships at the time. Results indicated that interpersonal need fulfillment plays an important role in the experience of overall well-being. Furthermore, the fulfillment of specific needs and the experience of well-being were associated with the presence of certain relationships in one's social network (specifically an exclusive romantic relationship). Interpersonal need compatibility in the areas of inclusion and control was found to be a significant predictor of relationship satisfaction, supporting the validity of the interpersonal need compatibility construct. Overall, the proposed framework demonstrated utility value, and important insights regarding need fulfillment and network structure emerged, but additional research is needed to fully understand the interplay of these factors.

Bradbury, Bruce William Economics Australian School of Business UNSW. "Family Size and Relative Need." Awarded by:University of New South Wales. Economics, 1997. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/17174.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines three questions concerned with the relative income needs of families of different sizes - often summarised by indices known as ???equivalence scales???. The first is the extent to which researchers and policy makers should offset the costs of family composition (eg the expenditure costs of children) with the benefits associated with demographic choice (eg the ???joys of parenthood???). Chapter 2 concludes that there are demographic and financial market constraints that will often make a narrow focus on expenditure costs appropriate for distributional research and tax/transfer policies. However, this will not always be the case. One implication of this result is that it may be reasonable for distributional research to use different equivalence scales for adults and children in the same household. Part 2 of the thesis introduces a new method for the estimation of the within-household income distribution and expenditure costs of different family types. This is based upon the household welfare model of Samuelson together with Lau???s method for modelling the joint consumption of household goods. In Chapter 4, this method is applied to the estimation of equivalence scales for older singles and married couples. The estimation is based upon a detailed set of assumptions about the extent of joint consumption for 17 different commodity groups. The main conclusions are that: the theoretical model fits the observed behaviour well (with the exception of some home production effects); that aged couples share their income relatively evenly; and that the relative rate of pension for aged singles in Australia is probably too low. In Part 3, the thesis examines how changes in poverty can be estimated when there is uncertainty about the equivalence scale. The thesis proposes a new method which permits a set of upper and lower bounds for the equivalence scale to be assumed, which in turn determine upper and lower bounds for the increase in poverty. This method is applied to measure the change in poverty in Australia during the 1980s. Equivalence scales can be found that imply either an increase or a decrease in poverty.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Stephen Hudson
There has been a growing consensus within political philosophy that liberalism is the most rational form of political organization. The arguments in favor of liberalism are theoretical and also based on historical observations. The view of liberalism as a moral conception of the good life, however, seems to betray its original historical purpose, namely, to provide a peaceful political forum despite competing comprehensive doctrines. How can liberalism be a thick moral conviction of its own if it was meant to temper such zero-sum convictions? To pose this question more concretely: If historic wars between strong religious convictions were tempered by provisional liberal ceasefires, could we accept the evolution of liberalism into a strong conviction of its own? This paradoxical development of liberalism in history runs parallel with contemporary philosophical debates. Whether the most proper conception of liberalism is comprehensive, and whether it is legitimized upon such comprehensiveness are both hotly debated. Exploring these historical and philosophical avenues uncover what I think is a need for a conception of comprehensive liberalism. It is beyond my scope here to formulate a new conception of liberalism that decisively settles the debate. I do, however, point to reasons why comprehensive liberalism should be the focus of contemporary efforts. First, I find that history shows a trend of liberalism growing into a positive doctrine of its own. Second, I invoke two famous traditional conceptions, one successful and one failed, which fuel our baseline intuitions of liberalism with comprehensive, not political justifications. Finally, I show that while contemporary philosophy surrounding liberalism developed a political conception, it cannot avoid slipping towards comprehensiveness. Taken together, my argument is that any enforceable and useful theory of liberalism must be grounded on thick and comprehensive philosophical premises

Abstract:
Possessing a vision to correct problems is an area of interest for leadership and political studies, as presumably vision provides the goal to orient upon and overcome problems, and should apply at all levels of leadership. The worsening situation in Syria since the end of the Cold War begs the questions of whether any recent U.S. President tried to address the issues in the relationship with Syria, and what was the vision the President sought to achieve. This study reviews Presidential rhetoric from President's News Conferences, major speeches and Executive Orders for a vision to ascertain the intended direction for U.S. policy for Syria. Also, the study reviews the leadership styles of the five Presidents for consistency and effectiveness in conveying a foreign policy message. Broadly, the study concludes that the Presidents need more than a strategy to engage other nation to fix problems. They need an achievable outcome to aim the U.S. government towards and to effectively broadcast their vision to a broad audience. It takes an appreciation for history, realistic expectations and an eye for the future to form a vision for a coherent way forward. Unfortunately, the Presidents in this study did not give the appropriate time or resources to correct the pervasive problems in Syria. Their overall policies ranged from incoherent to stagnant, therefore hampering the U.S. ability to guide progress fixing the situation.

The pervasive problems within Syria are some of the more important U.S. foreign policy issues that require guidance and direction to overcome. The worsening situation in Syria since the end of the Cold War begs the questions of whether any recent U.S. President tried to address the issues in the relationship with Syria. Broadly, the study concludes that it takes more than a strategy to engage another nation and fix problems. It takes an appreciation for history, realistic expectations and an eye for the future to form a vision for a coherent way forward. Additionally, Presidents require the ability to effectively communicate their vision to a broad audience. Unfortunately, it appears the Presidents in this study did not give the appropriate time or resources to correct the problems, and therefore hampered the U.S. President’s ability to guide progress to fix the situation.

Norman, David J. "Human traders need new tools." Thesis, University of Essex, 2016. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/17866/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis proposes new methods and tools for helping human traders to compete in a high-frequency trading environment. Human traders have difficulty trading against predatory algorithms and the thesis proposes methods that support the creation of assistive tools that can help human traders to compete profitably. It also develops further understanding of classical decision-making theory in a realtime trading context demonstrating that human traders improve decision-making biases when linked together in groups or with an assistive machine. As described in the thesis human traders are monitored, and their data is captured, in realtime and in situ. The trading performance and behavioural characteristics of the traders are studied in this context in order to determine if they can be positively modified. The thesis presents a new model for studying human trading behaviour in realtime and in situ using unique software. It also describes the basis for the development of a range of interventionist and assistive tools that are designed to augment trading performance. The approach put forward is unique in its application. It also provides evidence that human traders are willing to allow machines to augment their trading decisions. The contributions of this thesis are that it overcomes the problem of assessing human trader risk-taking behaviour in realtime and in situ, it makes sense of human trading behaviour at realtime speeds and then it shows that, with new approaches to human-machine collaboration, trading performance improves and classic decision-making biases are reduced.

Liu, Dixi. "NEMS by sidewall transfer lithography." Thesis, Imperial College London, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10044/1/31868.

Full text
Abstract:
A batch fabrication process for nano-electro-mechanical systems (NEMS) based on sidewall transfer lithography (STL) is developed and demonstrated. The STL is used to form nanoscale flexible silicon suspensions entirely by conventional lithography. A two-step process is designed for single-layer STL to fabricate simple electrothermal actuators, while a three-step process is designed to allow nanoscale features intersecting with each other for more complicated device lay-outs. Fabricated nanoscale features has a minimum in-plane width of approx. 100nm and a high aspect ratio of 50 : 1. Combined structures with microscale and nanoscale parts are transferred together into silicon by deep reactive etching (DRIE). Suspensions are achieved either by plasma undercut or HF vapour etch based on BSOI. The STL processes are used to form nanoscale suspensions while conventional lithography is used to form localised microscale features such as anchors. A wide variety of demonstrator devices have been fabricated with high feature quality. Analytic models have been developed to compare with experimental characterization and finite element analysis (FEA) predictions. Lattice structures fabricated by multi-layer STL have also be investigated as a novel type of mechanical metamaterial. Thus, the process could allow low-cost and mass parallel fabrication of future NEMS with a wider range of potential applications.

Harrison, Yvonne. "Satisfying a need for sleep." Thesis, Loughborough University, 1995. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/6978.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent studies have suggested that the average individual has a sleep requirement in excess of 8h sleep each night. These concerns stem from reports of relatively increased propensity for sleep throughout the day for otherwise apparently healthy, young adults. It has been claimed that a substantial proportion of these individuals are suffering from a chronic loss of sleep. The work presented in this thesis focuses on two key issues: (i) the adequacy of current social norms of sleep behaviour, and (ii) the assumption that an increased propensity for sleep throughout the day is the single most reliable consequence of a failure to satisfy a physiological need for sleep. Throughout the first experiment the potential benefits of sleeping for as much as 10h per night were explored. During 26 consecutive nights EEG recordings and/or actigraphs were used to monitor the night-time sleep of 10 asymptornatic regular sleepers (mean 23.6y). The schedule comprised 7 nights of BASELINE sleep, 14 nights of EXTENDED sleep (up to 10h/night), and 5 nights of RECOVERY sleep. During EXTENDED sleep subjects slept significantly longer (approx. 1h) but sleep latency and interim wakefidness deteriorated. EXTENDED sleep produced no improvements to self-rated mood or subjective sleepiness. Vigilance tests showed a small but significant reduction in reaction time following EXTENDED sleep compared with both BASELINE and RECOVERY nights. Ability to detect target tones did not change significantly. An objective measure of daytime sleepiness - the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) - showed small (approx I min) reductions during EXTENDED sleep. These findings give little support to the view of chronic sleep deprivation in the average 7.5 h sleeper. The second section includes evidence of a number of circumstances in which sleep can occur in alert subjects who otherwise showed no indication of sleepiness related impairment : (i) by using non-conventional scoring criteria throughout MSLT trials, sleep was found to occur as short bursts, or microsleeps, in non-arousing situations (ii) in response to a motivational incentive, and (iii) as MSLT defined patholo 91 sleepiness unrelated to sleep-sensitive performance tasks, subjective sleepiness, or prior sleep behaviour. It is concluded that the capacity for more sleep at night, and the ability to fall asleep quickly during the day, are not systematically related to a physiological need for sleep for many healthy, regular sleeping young adults.

Abstract:
The extreme sensitivity of nano electro mechanical system (NEMS) to atomic scale physical variations has led to the breakthrough development of NEMS- based mass spectrometry sys- tems capable of measuring a single molecule. Parallel sensing using thousands of devices will help to circumvent the small effective sensing area while opening new perspectives for applica- tions which require spatial mapping. While the development of NEMS CMOS co-integration technology is of paramount importance to achieve high density sensor arrays (>1000 devices), the readout circuitry capable of tracking NEMS resonator frequency shifts is still the limiting factor for the very large scale integration of individually addressed sensors. Moreover, in order to resolve the mass and position of an adsorbed analyte, single particle mass sensing appli- cations require to track simultaneously and in real time at least two modes of the resonators. This requirement adds complexity to the design of the overall system. To respond to the size, power consumption and resolution constraints linked to NEMS array measurement, this work focuses on the development of a new readout architecture based upon a dual mode heterodyne oscillator. This work also emphasis the effort made on the modelization and co-simulation of the NEMS devices with their readout electronics. Then, the manuscript describe the first results of the CEA/LETI CMOS co-integraton process developed to tackle the sensor density challenge of mass spectrometry application. Finally, present the two integrated circuit that were designed during this thesis. The first one was a proof of concept for the aforementioned oscillator architecture while the second one combine the architecture with the co-integration processus developed

During several last years, technological advances in the field of silicon micromachininghave initiated the industrial growth of Micro/Nano Electro Mechanical Systems(M/NEMS) for fabricating sensors or actuators. In the field of NEMS with sub-micron sizes, the properties allow for targeting applicationsin biomedical or biochemical analyses. It has been demonstrated that thesenano mass (or force) sensors achieve resolutions of the order of zeptogram (10−21 g)or picoNewton, hence allowing early diagnosis of certain cancers.Transduction schemes of these systems are currently based on electrical principles:many teams have nevertheless shown that photonics operates and detects tiny displacementin the order of femtometer. This hybrid technology, photonic circuitassociated with M/NEMS, potentially offers a significant improvement compared toelectrical transduction. The purpose of the thesis consists of developing the optomechanical transductionfor NEMS resonators displacement. A simple analytical model is presented togetherwith a numerical simulation. The performance of optical detection is compared toelectrical detection features. The comparison is based on objective criteria (sensitivity, noise, crowding) for designing original optomechanical structures. A dedicatedbench has been developed for the optical and mechanical characterizations of thesamples placed in a controlled environment. Measurements on fabricated devicesallow a better understanding of the design constrains and, more in general, of theoptomechanical detection applied to NEMS.i

During eight decades the Assembley of God had been holding out tight its identity, that took part of the people’s daily and of a brazilian religious culture that got used to see them as outsiders, separated. The incoming of the Neopentecostal churches brought about changes on the assembleyan’s ethos. Currently, it is possible to realize a mixture of practices and beliefs that here we will notice through the cathegories, identity and and syncretism. It is even more and more present a triumphalist language linked a Positive Confession.

Abstract: The theme of generational differences is a recurrent study from the most diverse areas of knowledge. The categorization of generations has been made based on historical and economic criteria, directly reflecting on Communications Studies. It is noted, therefore, that these generational subdivisions are closely linked to media consumption and the way of dealing with technological devices and the communicative practices originated with them. It is important to highlight that, when studying generational changes, it is mainly observed the youth fixed at a certain time, since youth behaviors and cultures lead to the establishment of new practices and the reconfiguration of those that already exist. The definition of behavioral patterns and changes in cultural production and consumption is also frequently attributed to youth. Over the decades, several generational nomenclatures have emerged, based on American historical reality - such as Generation Baby-Boom, Generation X, Generation Y, Generation Z, among others - that have rarely been updated by observing the Latin American reality. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the media-communication patterns of young people belonging to the so-called “NEET Generation” in the city of Bauru (SP), which, defined based on criteria used by Brazilian government, is composed of people from 15 to 29 years old who do not carry out study or work activities. It was applied a qualitative research, using a questionnaire with open and closed que... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Abstract:
In this thesis, I defend John Rawls’s assertion that political liberalism does not use the concept of truth. I respond to objections from Joshua Cohen and David Estlund. I argue that Cohen fails to show that public reason needs a minimalist conception of truth, since individuals with a range of conceptions of moral truth can meet the requirements of public reason. I dispute Estlund’s argument that the liberal principle of legitimacy is merely insular. Estlund assumes that the claim that the liberal principle of legitimacy is reasonable is no different than the claim that the principle is acceptable to reasonable persons. I argue that this assumption is incorrect, and that therefore the liberal principle of legitimacy is justifiable on the grounds that it is reasonable. I argue that political liberals need not worry that doing without the concept of truth will undermine the semantic coherence or objectivity of political liberalism.

Abstract:
The ocean plays a very important role in modulating the temperature of the Earth through absorbing, storing and transporting the energy that arrives from the sun. Better understanding the dynamics of the ocean can help us to better predict the weather and to better comprehend the climate, two topics of special relevance for society. Ocean models had become an extremely useful tools, as they became a framework upon with it was possible to build knowledge. Using computers it became possible to numerically solve the fluid equations of the ocean and by improving how ocean models exploit the computational resources, we can reduce the cost of simulation whilst enabling new developments that will increase its skill. By facing the computational challenges of ocean simulation we can contribute to topics that have a direct impact on society whilst helping to reduce the cost of our experiments. Being the major European ocean model and one of the main state-of-the-art ocean models worldwide, this thesis has focused on the Nucleus NEMO. To find a way to improve the computational performance of ocean models, one of the initial goals was to better understand their computational behaviour. To do so, an analysis methodology was proposed, paying special attention to inter-process communication. Used with NEMO, the methodology helped to highlight several implementation inefficiencies, whose optimization led to a 46-49\% gain in the maximum model throughput, increasing the scalability of the model. This result illustrated that this kind of analysis can significantly help model developers to adapt their code highlighting where the problems really are. Another of the issues detected was that the impact of the domain decomposition was alarmingly underestimated, since in certain circumstances the model's algorithm was selecting a sub-optimal decomposition. Taking into account the factors that make a specific decomposition impact the performance, a method to select an optimal decomposition was proposed. The results showed that that by a wise selection of the domain decomposition it was possible not only to save resources but also to increase the maximum model throughput by a 41\% in some cases. After the successes achieved during the first part of the thesis, that allowed an increase of the maximum throughput of the model by a factor of more than two, the attention focused on mixed-precision algorithms. Ideally, a proper usage of numerical precision would allow to improve the computational performance without sacrificing accuracy. In order to achieve that in ocean models, a method to find out the precision required for each one of the real variables in a code was presented. The method was used with NEMO and with the Regional Ocean Modelling System showing that in both models most of the variables could use less than the standard 64-bit without problems. Last but not least, it was found that being ocean models nonlinear it was not straightforward to determine whether a change made into the code was deteriorating the accuracy of the model or not. In order to solve this problem a method to verify the accuracy of a non-linear model was presented. Although the different contributions that gave form to this thesis have been diverse, they helped to identify and tackle computational challenges that affect computational ocean models. These contributions resulted in four peer-reviewed publications and many outreach activities. Moreover, the research outcomes have reached NEMO and EC-Earth consortium codes, having already helped model users to save resources and time. These contributions not only have significantly improved the computational performance of the NEMO model but have surpassed the original scope of the thesis and would be easily transferable to other computational models.

Abstract:
In 1986 a New Zealand Wetlands Management Policy was ratified by the New Zealand Government. The need for such a Policy, arose from two factors. Firstly, the extent and quality of wetlands in New Zealand had diminished, and secondly, the great number of agencies involved in the management of wetlands had lead to the fragmented and ineffectual management of wetlands. This study looks at the ways in which New Zealand's economic and political climate has changed since the 1986 policy was formulated. The changes include; reduced intervention in agriculture, government restructuring, a new Environment Act (1986), and the review of the resource management laws. The 1986 Policy is analysed in the context of these changes. The study shows that the 1986 New Zealand Wetlands Management Policy has lost much of its usefulness, and needs reviewing to make it applicable and useful in the future.
