Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Roland Barthes is among the thinkers and artists whom Maggie Nelson claims as her "many-gendered mothers" in The Argonauts (2015). This essay foregrounds Nelson's mode of engagement with Barthes's work, proposing that she replicates the active, writerly reading that Barthes himself advocates in S/Z (1970) and elsewhere. Where Nelson expresses deep affinity with Barthes, she also brings herself to his work and pushes against and beyond it. In my analysis, there are four axes to this active engagement with Barthes in The Argonauts : firstly, Nelson establishes Barthes as a foundational figure in her intertextual, queer literary lineage. Secondly, Nelson experiments with Barthes's formal and stylistic innovations. Thirdly, Barthes provides a foil for Nelson's recuperation of maternal subjectivity. Finally, Nelson builds on Barthes's writings on love to attest to the joy and viability of queer kinship. In foregrounding Nelson's (re)readings of Barthes, I elucidate her work and its citational politics, while inviting new perspectives on his. As a reader of The Argonauts , moreover, I find I must comb the text's layers to find meaning, bringing myself to its (typographical) gaps. Nelson's work, like that of Barthes, invites a mode of reading that makes space for dialogue, intimacy, and intellectual innovation.

Abstract:
Mark Nelson claims that Russell's remarks—in his History of Western Philosophy—about Aquinas are ‘breathtakingly supercilious and unfair’ and ‘sniffy’. I argue that Nelson completely misrepresents Russell's criticisms of Aquinas. In particular, I argue that the silly epistemological doctrine which Nelson attributes to Russell plays no role at all in the criticism which Russell actually makes of Aquinas. Since—as Nelson himself concedes—there is no other reason to think that Russell commits himself to the epistemological doctrine in question, either in the passages under discussion or elsewhere, I conclude that there is equal justice in the claim that it is Nelson's dismissal of Russell which is ‘unfair’ and ‘sniffy’.

Abstract:
In December 1879, Stead Ellis landed in New Zealand, with family, seeking work as an architect in the South Island, along with his pupil, budding architect Joshua Charlesworth. Finding work in Nelson as the Architect for the Nelson Education Board in early 1880, Ellis was a key architect, along with Beatson, in the appearance of early Nelson's public buildings. Ellis was responsible for designing many school buildings in the Nelson region, and also other commissions such as the church at Motupiko. Very little remains of Ellis' lifetime of work, with most schools having replaced their buildings several times over, but some few scraps of Ellis' work remain - namely two buildings: the Bishops School, near the Nelson Cathedral, and the Anglican church at Motupiko. This paper will examine and trace remaining work of Stead Ellis.

AbstractEdward Nelson published in 1986 a book defending an extreme formalist view of mathematics according to which there is animpassable barrierin the totality of exponentiation. On the positive side, Nelson embarks on a program of investigating how much mathematics can be interpreted in Raphael Robinson's theory of arithmetic. In the shadow of this program, some very nice logical investigations and results were produced by a number of people, not only regarding what can be interpreted inbut also what cannot be so interpreted. We explain some of these results and rely on them to discuss Nelson's position.

Abstract:
Born in Norfolk, England, on September 29, 1758, Horatio Nelson was the sixth of eleven children in a working-class family. With the help of his uncle, Maurice Suckling, a captain in the Royal Navy, Nelson began his naval career as a 13-year-old midshipman on the British battleship Raisonnable. His courage and leadership in the battle marked him for promotion, and he rose quickly from midshipman to admiral, serving in the West Indies, East Indies, North America, Europe, and even the Arctic. As his rank ascended, Nelson's consistent strategy was close engagement, an approach that led to success in combat but placed him in direct danger. Thus, Britain's greatest warrior was also her most famous patient: Nelson suffered more injuries and underwent more operations than any other flag officer in Royal Navy history. His career reached a climax off Cape Trafalgar, where he not only led the Royal Navy to victory over the combined French and Spanish fleets but also met his own death.

This piece of work consists of an analysis of Nelson Rodrigues` Confessions, custom chronicles written in the passage from the 1960`s to the 1970`s and recently reedited in three compilations: O óbvio ululante, A cabra vadia, O reacionário. The purpose of this dissertation is to make emerge, from the reading of chronicles, the character/narrator, Nelson Rodrigues, who works on the thin line between fiction and confession. A narrator who creates other characters from the image of Brazilian public figures of the time. It will hence rest to verify how Nelson Rodrigues fictionalizes himself and other protagonists of the 1960`s and 70`s.

Abstract:
Our research project is part of a larger group which proposes readings of the works of Nelson Rodrigues. Since they were published, these works have generated a lot of discussion and thus have been analyzed through a set of different theories. We aim at providing one more little piece for this infinite puzzle, proposing an analysis of four of the most controversial plays by Nelson Rodrigues and taking into account the intellectual position of the author, which was very polemic at a time of very clear political disunion. We first set the work in context, considering intellectuals, society and the reception of the work. Then, we recollect the manifest position of the author on his cultural chronicles, in which he states that he is politically conservative. After that, in order to highlight the revolutionary quality of the texts by Nelson Rodrigues, we select a group of mythic plays: Álbum de família (1946), Anjo negro (1947), Senhora dos afogados (1947) and Dorotéia (1949). This group of plays has called our attention once it shows the attempt of the author in coming closer to the model of the Greek tragedy and in escaping from the direct setting, as it normally happens in the “carioca” tragedies. Our analysis mainly tries to provide a historic-anthropological perspective, based on Freyre (2004), Holanda (1977) and Damatta (1985 e 1990), who reveal the social and cultural problems in Brazil which were critically pointed out by Nelson Rodrigues. It also tries to provide a philosophical and psychoanalytical perspective of the moral based on Nietzsche (1998) and Freud (1974), who clear up the moral conflicts pointed out by the author. By using the tragic formula, which also brings about a political component, the author shows his revolutionary face, opening debate at the theatre exactly about the points which the Brazilian society has mostly tried to omit in its civilizatory process.

Abstract:
This book reconsiders the career of an important, controversial, but neglected figure in this history of Irish Presbyterianism. The Revd Isaac Nelson is mostly remembered for his opposition to the evangelical revival of 1859, but this book demonstrates that there was much more to Nelson’s career. Nelson started out as a protégé of Henry Cooke and as an exemplary young evangelical minister. Upon aligning himself with the Belfast Anti-Slavery Society and joining forces with American abolitionists such as Frederick Douglass and William Lloyd Garrison, Nelson emerged as a powerful voice against compromise with slaveholders. One of the central objectives of this book is to show that anti-slavery, especially his involvement with the ‘Send Back the Money’ controversy in the Free Church of Scotland and the debate over fellowship with slaveholders at the Evangelical Alliance, was crucially important to the development of Nelson into one of Irish Presbyterianism’s most controversial figures. His later opposition to the 1859 Revival has often been understood as being indicative of Nelson’s opposition to evangelicalism. This book argues that such a conclusion is mistaken and that Nelson opposed the Revival as a Presbyterian evangelical. His later involvement with the Land League and the Irish Home Rule movement, including his tenure as the Member of Parliament for County Mayo, could be easily dismissed as an entirely discreditable affair. While avoiding romantic nostalgia in relation to Nelson’s nationalism, this book argues that Nelson’s basis for advocating Home Rule was not as peculiar as it might first appear.

The main aim of this paper is defining a Logic of Formal Inconsistency over the degree-preserving companion of Nelson logic with a consistency operator. In this sense, we present a quasivariety of Nelson lattices enriched with a suitable consistency operator and axiomatise the corresponding logic. As main results we present necessary and sufficient conditions to prove a categorial equivalence for the category for Nelson lattices with a consistency operator.
