ABSTRACT: Lisbon is a city of neighborhoods. The most typical and popular have the privilege of representing the history, culture and genesis of the city. This type of buildings are an expressive presence in the urban network of Lisbon. In there we can find a specific way of life, sustained by the density of human connections and by strong relations of inter-knowledge and neighborhood, whose allusion to the village-town carry a certain nostalgia. However, changes in the family structure and recent pressures on housing, tourism and everyday life have led this type of buildings and livelihoods of its inhabitants to a vertigo situation. Casa, Bairro e Transição intends to reflect on the rehabilitation and requalification of the housing typologies of Madragoas historic neighborhood, whose precarious housing conditions have vindicated the neighborhood and its built heritage, until recent years, to a certain abandonment and negligence, and also about the relations and appropriations that its inhabitants establish and carry out in collective spaces. We believe that the valuation of this type of building and the reflection on heritage, material and identity values can guarantee the functional reintegration and socio-cultural diversity in these urban areas, promoting not only its heritage but also the cultural, social and economical sustainability of Madragoa, recognizing other ways of inhabiting and living within the city.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the work of reformer Lugenia Burns Hope and her community organization, the Neighborhood Union, as a case study to unpack scholarly characterizations of black elite uplift strategies during the early 20th century. The Neighborhood Union was established in 1908 in Atlanta by Hope and women from the community to build stronger neighborhoods and to combat the deleterious effects of the 1906 Race Riots and Jim Crow laws. Neighborhood Union settlement houses provided basic and extracurricular services, including kindergartens for working mothers, vocational classes, and lecture series. The organization’s exceptional, multi-class leadership structure enabled members of the black poor and working classes to lead their own projects with the assistance of Neighborhood Union resources. Hope’s background provides evidence against broad generalizations of the black elite as paternalistic, and her vision of creating democratic communities that diminished class barriers provides a counter narrative to characterizations of clubwomen and the black elite as engaging in respectability politics in their social work. Understood within its historical and sociopolitical context, Hope’s life and work also challenge mainstream narratives of the Progressive Era and the Social Gospel movement.

ABSTRACT: Faced with the context of deterioration and disqualification that many neighborhoods go through, bearing in mind the memory and history of an urban and cultural development, an answer was required for its valorization and dynamization, aiming at its abandonment. We focused the study on housing needs, with changes over time, with a view to reduce costs and adapting to new features. The Marechal Carmona neighborhood in Cascais allowed a reflection on the current state of this area of the city and the need to rethink its essence and its adaptation to the new times. We live in a reality where the transformation of societies and the housing problem are constant, these themes are the motto for the development of the project. This instability and uncertainty cause a need to adapt housing processes and responses, since the means do not seem to be sufficient to respond to the complexity of the situations that emerge. Taking advantage of the moment in which urban requalification gains expression in urban intervention strategies, new ways of making use of the house are designed according to a set of different hypotheses, with a greater adaptation to the different demands that are felt in contemporary society. An approach to architecture is made through the deeper design of housing and shows how one can (re)enable the Marechal Carmona neighborhood, bringing to this place new features and experiences.

Abstract:
This thesis consists of four self-contained essays. Essay 1 (with Olof Åslund and Matz Dahlberg): In this essay we investigate the impact of commuter train access on individual labor market outcomes. Our study considers the exogenous introduction of a commuter train linking locations in the northern part of Uppsala County (Sweden) to the regional employment center, considerably decreasing commuting times by public transit to the center for those living close to the pre-existing railroad. Using difference-in-differences matching techniques on comprehensive individual panel data spanning over a decade, our intention-to-treat estimates show that the reform had mainly no impact on the earnings and employment development among the affected individuals. Essay 2: In this essay I look into the role of public transit for residential sorting by studying how the introduction of a commuter train linking locations in the northern part of Uppsala County (Sweden) to the regional employment center affected migration patterns in the areas served. Using a difference-in-difference(-in-difference) approach and comprehensive individual level data, I find that the commuter train had a positive effect on overall in-migration to the areas served and no effect on the average out-migration rate from these areas. With regards to sorting based on labor market status, I find no evidence of sorting based on employment status but some evidence that the train introduction increased the probability of moving out of the areas served for individuals with high labor incomes relative to the probability for individuals with lower income. Considering sorting along other lines than labor market status, the analysis suggests that people born in non-western countries came to be particularly attracted towards the areas served by the commuter train as compared to other similar areas. Essay 3: In this essay I look into the relation between housing mix and social mix in metropolitan Stockholm (Sweden) over the period 1990-2008. Using entropy measures, I find that although the distribution of tenure types over metropolitan Stockholm became somewhat more even over the studied period, people living in different tenure types still to a large extent tended to live in different parts of the city in 2008. The degree of residential segregation was much lower between different population groups. I further find that the mix of family types, and over time also of birth region groups and income groups, was rather different between different tenure types in the same municipality. The mix of different groups however tended to be similar within different tenure types in the same neighborhood. While the entropy measures provide a purely descriptive picture, the findings thus suggest that tenure type mix could be more useful for creating social mix at the municipal level than for creating social mix at the neighborhood level. Essay 4 (with Matz Dahlberg): The last decade’s immigration to western European countries has resulted in a culturally and religiously more diverse population in these countries. This diversification manifests itself in several ways, where one is through new features in the cityscape. Using a quasi-experimental approach, essay 4 examines how one such new feature, public calls to prayer, affects neighborhood dynamics (house prices and migration). The quasi-experiment is based on an unexpected political process that lead way to the first public call to prayer from a mosque in Sweden combined with rich (daily) information on housing sales. While our results indicate that the public calls to prayer increased house prices closer to the mosque, we find no evidence that the public calls to prayer served as a driver of residential segregation between natives and people born abroad around the mosque in question (no significant effects on migration behavior). Our findings are consistent with a story where some people have a willingness to pay for the possibility to more fully exert their religion which puts an upward pressure on housing in the vicinity of a mosque with public calls to prayer.

The courtyard houses in Beijing, named siheyuan, have undergone many changes during the last three decades. The siheyuan is a type of house that had slowly developed over more than two thousand years. At the beginning of the twentieth century it was still piratically untouched by influences of the Western World and industrial revolution. Though the first transformation to the Beijing courtyard house occurred at the beginning of this century, the most important transformation happened during the last few decades. Due to a severe housing shortage and political events, such as the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), the courtyard house, once inhabited by one extended family, had to be shared among several families. New shelters, referred in this thesis as additions, had to be built inside the traditional compound. Due to a lack of space, the deployment of pavilions (the traditional construction), was interrupted. Building materials also changed. New building materials appeared on the market. The resulting living environment looked messy at first sight. But underneath the messiness, the deployment of additions shows and some constants, some characteristics that are similar to the deployment of traditional pavilions. These implicit rules are important for the preservation of the architectural language of the neighborhoods and of the entire city, as well. Methods of enclosure, levels of hierarchy in the built form, and dwellers direct control of their living quarters, are among principles that should be respected in order to preserve a continuity in the built environment Without this continuity the architectural language of the city cannot be protected.

Abstract:
Since the late 1960's, fundamental changes in Canadian immigration policy, encouraging more middle-class/professional immigration in an effort to create employment and to boost the nation's skill profile, have precipitated a shift in orientation of population and capital flows into Canada. In particular the countries of the Pacific Rim have risen in relative importance as source regions of both international finance and migrants. These trends have had an uneven impact across Canada, and Vancouver in particular has come to play a significant role as a "gateway city". This thesis considers some of the ramifications of the emerging social geography of this elite portion of the wide spectrum of immigrants entering Canada. In focusing on neighbourhood change within the upper middle-class suburb of Kerrisdale, situated on Vancouver's elite West Side, it examines the cultural politics surrounding perceived social change. It explores a contested sense of identity and place, showing how these are informed and invigorated by a diverse set of social struggles evident in conflicting landscape 'tastes' in the neighbourhood of Kerrisdale.

Abstract:
How can local governments in the absence of national regulations or incentive schemesmotivate private owners of post-war mass-housing for investments into ambitious retrofittingfor energy efficiency? The million-program houses’ lifecycle currently makes renovationsnecessary and this would be an excellent opportunity to realize an upgrading of their energyefficiencystatus. Private owners do however show no inclination to do so. An intertwinedarray of barriers towards energy-efficient renovation is explored in this study, while it seeks tofind out which new drivers are needed to overcome these barriers and create an intrinsicmotivation for the owners to undertake the anticipated investments. In an exploratory casestudy, these points are investigated in the context of the exemplifying case of the Bygga omDialogen project in Malmö, Sweden.Bygga om Dialogen, is reframing the situation of investments into energy-efficiency in abroader socio-economic context and thrives to create new drivers pushing the owners toundertake the investments via the tools of strategic niche management and reflexivegovernance. This study explores how a strategic niche management and reflexive governancecan be used to motivate a variety of stakeholders to scrutinize and reconsider theirassumptions of the renovation-business-case and how this can stimulate the owners to activelycontribute to the establishment of a new, innovative, cross-sectoral approach seeking torealize energy-efficient investments in the context of holistic sustainable development in theneighborhood of Lindängen. Additionally it is explored how strategic niche management canbe used to deal with the contextual, strategic and institutional uncertainties that the establishednetwork is facing. Ideally the vision of mutually realizing energy-efficient renovations as partof an inclusive socio-economic upgrading of the neighborhood, could act as a building blockand exemplifying case for similar neighborhoods nationwide- or even all over Europe.

Abstract:
Today the Swedish city Västerås states that the city wants to prevent the urban sprawl that has been common during the last decades by building the city inward. The lack of housing is great, just like many other big cities in Sweden, and this has resulted in an increase in housing construction. This thesis explores if there is a chance that we are destroying our modern cultural-historical environments for the next generation just because we currently have a need for construction that trumps said cultural-historical environments. By studying two of the younger neighborhoods in Västerås from two different time periods (1940s to 1950s and 1960s to 1970s) the questions about where the cultural-historical values lays; How one can exploit the two different neighborhoods and still preserve the cultural-historical values on the sites and also look into what threats there is to the cultural-historical values to this day were answered. The result shows that both areas differ greatly from each other and that there was no solution that works for both areas. The periodic parks and greenery, and the periodic city planning is highly valued by the residents in each of the different neighborhoods. However, it is only the residents in the neighborhood from the 1940s to 1950s which appreciates the periodic architecture. The conclusion is that if the city should try to build pastiches, this would preferably be done in the neighborhood built in the 1940s to the 1950s, and that the city should be careful with the parks and greenery and that traffic separation is popular in the area built in the 1960s to the 1970s.

The previous studies of luxurious mansions focus on the selling aspects of luxurious mansions, ignoring their influences such as the neighborhood effects and its cause. Therefore, It tries to investigate how the luxurious mansions impact on the price of nearby houses in different angles, and observe the difference of capitalization effects in different periods of time. This study takes Hung-Sheng the Palace in Taipei city as a case, using the information of space and that of transaction prices to analyze the effect of Hung-Sheng the Palace on the price of the houses nearby with quantitative methods. It also uses the questionnaires to analyze whether the attitude of the residents living near Hung-Sheng the Palace impact on the house prices indirectly. The results revealed that using the Hedonic Price Method established by regression aspects, each additional one hundred meter away from the Hung-Sheng the Palace, the total price of its proximity to residential will be reduced by 0.4%, it estimated the impact of the range of approximately 2000 meters, also found that the Hung-Sheng the Palace prices surrounding generated the luxurious mansions effects. The subjective perception, up to 77.68% percent of the respondents believed that the Hung-Sheng the Palace prices surrounding will be affected by the luxurious mansions, their believed that the Hung-Sheng the Palace nearby the average price differences between the actual transaction price of 1.83 times the calculated price differences. In conclusion, the luxurious mansions effects not only in the trading price of the objective, also exists in the subjective cognitive attitude, even the latter than the former, which also confirmed the existence of the phenomenon of luxurious mansions effects.

Nowadays, most research and services of house price prediction in Taiwan focus on house characteristics and seldom take neighborhood/environmental features into consideration. However, attributes that affect house price not only contain house attributes, but also include neighborhood attributes and temporal trend of house price. This thesis used open data of real estate transaction data in Taipei City and New Taipei City, analyzed the effect of neighborhood attributes on house price to define a set of effective neighborhood attributes, and finally proposed a model that combine house attributes, neighborhood attributes, and temporal trend of house price to make house price prediction. In experiments, results indicated that neighborhood-considering prediction model has a better performance in prediction loss. And, in comparison to static model, the time-series model has a better prediction capability. Finally, based on the proposed model, this thesis also proposed a house price prediction web system that for help users to estimate budget when buying houses. Also, the experiment showed that service has same prediction performance and reliability as well as model.
