Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Fading Points is a piece of music for large wind ensemble. The work is concerned with time perception and is designed to convey to the listener a long temporal progression from slow music to fast music. To this end, the work is written using musical gestures specifically designed for their portrayal of musical time. The work consists of four sections, each of which is described in detail in the analytical part of the thesis. The analysis also describes the rhythmic language, which is created around short rhythmic cells. These cells are based on ratios and are used in all levels of the piece from the surface rhythm to the large formal divisions. The harmonic language is also described. The vertical harmony is derived from a dense chord presented at the beginning of the piece. The horizontal pitch material is created from small pitch cells, also taken from the opening chord. These cells are used in isolation but are also combined to create modes, which are the focus of the latter parts of the piece.

Avellà, Oliver José Miguel. "Towards label-free biosensing in compact disk technologies f or point-of-need analysis." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de València, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10251/86128.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores new analytical advances using compact disk biosensing technologies, and comprises six scientific publications distributed along four chapters. Special attention is herein payed to Thermochromic Etching Disks (TED) technology (Chapter 1), rational design of disk-based biorecognition assays (Chapter 2), and label-free detection systems for point-of-need analysis (Chapters 3 and 4). First, insights into a novel light-mediated signal developing system for biorecognition assays (based on TED disks and drives) are provided together with an overview of the state-of-the art and future trends in photo- and thermochromic biosensing. This signal developing approach exploits photo- and thermochromism for biosensing in an original manner and represents a potential strategy to simplify signaling processes in bioanalytical systems. Then, how to transform TED technology into lab-on-a-disk systems is addressed. TED has proven to be a very versatile tool to perform sensitive analysis of biorecognition assays, using platforms and scanners easily obtained from regular disks and drives, respectively. Biologically relevant assays of different nature (microarray, cell culture, immunofiltration, turbidimetry, etc.) have been arrayed in a single disk and sensitively analyzed by imaging. Regarding rational design, a theoretical-experimental method (INSEL) based on kinetics and mass-transport modelling for optimizing biorecognition assays and exploring their behavior is presented. INSEL has been implemented as an in silico tool that enables to characterize biointeractions with minimal experimentation, to perform optimizations directed towards custom objectives defined by the user, and to easily compute the effect of critical variables without further experiments. In another study included in this thesis, polycarbonate grooved structures obtained from standard recordable disks (CD-R and DVD-R) were coated with silver and tailored to become SERS-active. This strategy represents a cost-effective and industrially scalable alternative to the SERS substrates typically used for bioanalysis. These disk-based materials have presented tunable plasmonic responses, significant Raman enhancement, and have allowed complex biological targets (such as proteins and exosomes) to be analyzed by SERS without using labeled reagents as tracers. In addition to introduce inexpensive and large-scale SERS substrates for biosensing, this study also suggests the development of prospective Raman scanners based on disk drives. Another approach herein presented addresses the implementation of diffraction-based sensing (DBS) in TED technology in order to conceive disk-based label-free biosensors based on standard disks and drives. At first, a comprehensive experimental assessment of the analytical possibilities offered by DBS is presented. Then, the fabrication of arrays of diffractive protein networks on TED disks is investigated, with which sensitive analysis of antibodies in label-free conditions has been demonstrated, using adapted drives as scanners. This investigation provides important insights into cost-effective and industrially scalable functional materials and detection setups that exploit consumer electronics for label-free biosensing.

Although we give library instruction in graduate courses per request,we reach a small number of students this way. Others will see us oneon-one,but we’re still missing the majority. Nearly all Boot Campersare unknown to us, which means they’ve had no formal graduatelibrary instruction prior to writing the biggest project of their academiclives. To this end, we offered two new strategy-based workshops, whichwe propose to outline as one single-session presentation at USETDAunder the category of “Student Support and Training” (ImpactfulETD Processing). In Boot Camp, Session One covers data management: physical andvirtual workspace organization, file structure, online data storage andbackups. The emphasis here is on where to put data and how to saveit. Online programs covered include free word processing softwaresuch as Google Docs, Word Online, Shutterbug, and Zoho Docs andcloud storage services such as Google Drive, Microsoft’s OneDrive,Mac’s iCloud Storage, Amazon storage, Box and Dropbox.Session Two of Boot Camp addresses research and citation management.Revamped to include the Association of College and ResearchLibraries (ACRL) Information Literacy Framework’s concepts, wepresent systematic research as a transferable skill, not an isolated casetied to one course or problem. This workshop incorporates criticalthinking into showing students how to construct a search; how tokeep on top of research through folders, feeds, and alerts; and how tomanage citations via Mendeley. After the presentation and discussion, attendees should be able torecognize the significant function librarians perform in a targetedprogram such as Boot Camp convey the value of formal, timelyintervention for graduate students assess the benefits of linking ouroverall methodology to the ACRL Framework replicate our offeringsto support their students at the point of need, and beyond.

Schmidt, Marek Wojciech, and Marek Schmidt@rl ac uk. "Phase formation and structural transformation of strontium ferrite SrFeOx." The Australian National University. Research School of Physical Sciences and Engineering, 2001. http://thesis.anu.edu.au./public/adt-ANU20020708.190055.

Full text
Abstract:
Non-stoichiometric strontium iron oxide is described by an abbreviated formula SrFeOx (2.5 ≤ x ≤ 3.0) exhibits a variety of interesting physical and chemical properties over a broad range of temperatures and in different gaseous environments. The oxide contains a mixture of iron in the trivalent and the rare tetravalent state. The material at elevated temperature is a mixed oxygen conductor and it, or its derivatives, can have practical applications in oxygen conducting devices such as pressure driven oxygen generators, partial oxidation reactors in electrodes for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). ¶ This thesis examines the behaviour of the material at ambient and elevated temperatures using a broad spectrum of solid state experimental techniques such as: x-ray and neutron powder diffraction, thermogravimetric and calorimetric methods, scanning electron microscopy and Mossbauer spectroscopy. Changes in the oxide were induced using conventional thermal treatment in various atmospheres as well as mechanical energy (ball milling). The first experimental chapter examines the formation of the ferrite from a mixture of reactants. It describes the chemical reactions and phase transitions that lead to the formation of the oxide. Ball milling of the reactants prior to annealing was found to eliminate transient phases from the reaction route and to increase the kinetics of the reaction at lower temperatures. Examination of the thermodynamics of iron oxide (hematite) used for the reactions led to a new route of synthesis of the ferrite frommagnetite and strontium carbonate. This chapter also explores the possibility of synthesis of the material at room temperature using ball milling. ¶ The ferrite strongly interacts with the gas phase so its behaviour was studied under different pressures of oxygen and in carbon dioxide. The changes in ferrite composition have an equilibrium character and depend on temperature and oxygen concentration in the atmosphere. Variations of the oxygen content x were described as a function of temperature and oxygen partial pressure, the results were used to plot an equilibrium composition diagram. The heat of oxidation was also measured as a function of temperature and oxygen partial pressure. ¶ Interaction of the ferrite with carbon dioxide below a critical temperature causes decomposition of the material to strontium carbonate and SrFe12O19 . The critical temperature depends on the partial pressure of CO2 and above the critical temperature the carbonate and SrFe12O19 are converted back into the ferrite. The resulting SrFe12O19 is very resistant towards carbonation and the thermal carbonation reaction does not lead to a complete decomposition of SrFeOx to hematite and strontium carbonate. ¶ The thermally induced oxidation and carbonation reactions cease at room temperature due to sluggish kinetics however, they can be carried out at ambient temperature using ball milling. The reaction routes for these processes are different from the thermal routes. The mechanical oxidation induces two or more concurrent reactions which lead to samples containing two or more phases. The mechanical carbonation on the other hand produces an unknown metastable iron carbonate and leads a complete decomposition of the ferrite to strontiumcarbonate and hematite. ¶ Thermally and mechanically oxidized samples were studied using Mossbauer spectroscopy. The author proposes a new interpretation of the Sr4Fe4O11 (x=2.75) and Sr8Fe8O23 (x=2.875)spectra.The interpretation is based on the chemistry of the compounds and provides a simpler explanation of the observed absorption lines. The Mossbauer results froma range of compositions revealed the roomtemperature phase behaviour of the ferrite also examined using x-ray diffraction. ¶ The high-temperature crystal structure of the ferrite was examined using neutron powder diffraction. The measurements were done at temperatures up to 1273K in argon and air atmospheres. The former atmosphere protects Sr2Fe2O5 (x=2.5) against oxidation and the measurements in air allowed variation of the composition of the oxide in the range 2.56 ≤ x ≤ 2.81. Sr2Fe2O5 is an antiferromagnet and undergoes phase transitions to the paramagnetic state at 692K and from the orthorhombic to the cubic structure around 1140K.The oxidized formof the ferrite also undergoes a transition to the high-temperature cubic form. The author proposes a new structural model for the cubic phase based on a unit cell with the Fm3c symmetry. The new model allows a description of the high-temperature cubic form of the ferrite as a solid solution of the composition end members. The results were used to draw a phase diagramfor the SrFeOx system. ¶ The last chapter summarizes the findings and suggests directions for further research.

Abstract:
Abstract Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate if treatment with “dry needling” in myofascial triggerpoints (MTrPs) in the rotatorcuff muscles may affect impingement symptoms such as pain during provocative tests, shoulder mobility, and function. The research questions were: Does the value of pain change on the Visual Analog Pain Scale (VAS) between before and after treatment? Do the positive provocative tests for impingement change between before and after treatment? Does the active shoulder mobility change between before and after treatment? Does the self-rated function change between before and after treatment? Method: The study was a prospective randomized intervention study and 19 persons with impingement symptoms (mean ± standard deviation; 58 ± 18 years, and shoulder pain duration 3.9 ± 1.6 months) were randomized into two groups. The groups were tested before, directly after and 3 weeks after treatment. The intervention group was treated twice, with a week in between, with “dry needling” in MTrPs. The control group was also treated on two occasions but was instead given a superficial needle in the infraspinatus muscle. All subjects were treated by the same physiotherapist. Pain was evaluated on the VAS when subjects performed active shoulder flexion before and after treatment. Provocative tests for shoulder impingement (Neer sign, Hawkins-Kennedy test and Jobe test) as well as range of motion tests were performed before, after and three weeks after treatment. The frequencies of positive/negative provocative tests were presented. Shoulder function was evaluated with the QuickDASH questionnaire. Significance level p≤0.05 was used in the study and a tendency was identified between 0.05 ≤ p < 0.1. Results: There was a tendency (p=0.086) with decreased pain (VAS) in the intervention group after the treatment. Among the impingement tests only significant improved results was observed for Neer sign test three weeks after the treatment (p=0.025) No significant difference could be seen on the active shoulder mobility between before and after the treatment. The perceived function in the intervention group, measured with the Quick DASH questionnaire, showed a tendency (p=0.086) towards a better function. Conclusions: The study showed a tendency towards that”dry needling”  in MTrPs may affect impingement symptoms such as pain and function. The provocative tests for shoulder impingement, Neer sign, showed a significant decrease in pain after treatment. More studies with larger population is needed to make a statement about the effect of “dry needling” in MTrPs as a treatment for shoulder impingement symptoms.

Abstract:

We alsotest the moderating role of the individual variables which are the need to touch (Need For Touch) and the optimal level of stimulation (Optimal Level of Stimulation) on the link between the degreeof use of digital devices and the lived experience. After carrying out a literature review on our keyconcepts, we conducted three successive studies: a qualitative study with managers, then two quantitative studies conducted in store with customers. Research has shown a positive impact of the degree of use of in-store digital devices on consumer experience and behavior. The moderating effect of the optimal level of stimulation has been validated ; that of the need for touch has beenpartially

Background: The purpose of the Last-Mile course was to bridge the gap between theory and clinical practice for nursing students in order to facilitate their transitions into work settings. Thus, the course has become part of nursing curriculum in every nursing programs. However, maladjustment is still an issue after students enter into practice settings. There are few studies that have explored the design of the last-mile course. Purpose The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of teaching and learning regarding the last-mile course from the perspectives of preceptors and new nurses, and to identify the needed contents for the Last-Mile course. Methodology This qualitative study used purpose sampling to collect data from a northeastern reginal teaching hospital in Taiwan. A total of 11 preceptors and 10 new nurses participated in the in-depth, semi-structured interviews. Colaizzi’s (1978) method of content analysis was used for data analysis. Results Data regarding preceptors’ needs and teaching experiences, and new nurses’ needs and learning experiences were analyzed. Analysis on preceptors’ teaching experiences revealed four themes: teaching students with a mentality of mentoring new staff nurses, progressively facilitating students in development of roles and responsibilities, fostering students to become colleagues, and guiding students to face the challenges of being a preceptor. Three themes regarding preceptors’ teaching needs were identified: providing appropriate teaching resources and environment, strengthening clinical teaching capabilities, and receiving emotional support. Analysis on new nurses’ learning experiences revealed four themes: learning with a mentality of becoming a new nurse, progressively learning to demonstrate nurse’ roles and responsibilities, learning and growing in nursing professionalism, understanding the challenges in transitioning from a student nurse to a new nurse. Three themes regarding new nurses’ learning needs were identified: providing appropriate teaching resources and environment, strengthening clinical teaching capabilities, and receiving emotional support. There are two to four sub-themes under each theme. Conclusion and Recommendations Based on the preceptors and new nurses’ experiences, the contents of the Last-Mile course should comprise of five elements: creating a friendly learning environment, physical assessment and nursing care, inter-professional collaboration and communication skills, hand-off skills, and emotion and stress management. The results of this study may assist the design of the Last-Mile course in the academic and practice settings to facilitate nursing students’ role transition to practice settings and to promote retention rate.

An advanced and latest agricultural perspective in the beginning of 21 century has undertaking and changing the fundamental of our living style and life maintaining. It has been played the role mostly based on the concept of sustainable horticultural development and pursued the harmony between the human nature and its environment. It is a world trend that leading us toward the diverse new industry which combines sustainable horticulture and recreational agriculture we have to manage in spite of the shark it may bring us to face to our traditional agricultural industry. Furthermore, recreational farm, with its productive supplements and service farm, has gradually become the main contribution and the outputting platform of those agricultural professionals. Nevertheless, what role shall a horticultural professional play and what specialized acknowledgement will be demand? How will need one to integrate his specialized knowledge in the horticultural field transversely, at the mean time, popularize his industry longitudinally? Mainly, interpretation system and its technology are the key point. By conferring on the industrial operating close-up, as well as the academic theory, this research discusses how the horticultural professionals get the key and facilitate their indexical technology in elaborating recreational agriculture. The goal is to up-grade the potential of its competitions in integrating the horticultures in the transition of recreational agriculture industry. This research focuses on Hwataoyao, an unique indexical recreational agriculture industry located at my hometown-Miaoli, a place where combines flower, pottery, kiln, and landscape operating across diverse fields.

Agenbag, Daniel Sarel. "Longitudinal handling characteristics of a tailless gull-wing aircraft." Diss., 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/28011.

Full text
Abstract:
A handling quality investigation was performed on the swept gull-wing configuration. The swept gull-wing configuration is tailless and has a wing with a transition in the sweep and dihedral angle. An example of this type of aircraft is the Exulans. This aircraft is currently under development at the University of Pretoria. The handling quality study was focussed on pitch axis dynamics. The Exulans is a research testbed that will be used to investigate the swept gull-wing configuration and its special controls by means of full-scale flight testing. Variable wing sweep, twisting elevons and winglets will be investigated as means of control. These control devices are configured in such a way as to have minimum impact on the performance of the aircraft. The handling qualities of the swept gull-wing configuration have to be acceptable while using these different control strategies. The study was launched to investigate whether a gull-wing configuration aircraft will have satisfactory handling qualities at CG positions associated with the most favourable aerodynamic performance. There is an aerodynamic performance gain in designing an aircraft so that the CG falls on the so-called `E-point'. The E-point is the centre of pressure for an elliptical circulation distribution. An elliptical circulation distribution is associated with the highest Oswald efficiency for an aircraft. Time domain simulation techniques and frequency domain analysis techniques were used to analyse the handling qualities of the gull-wing configuration. The C-star criterion was used to analyse handling qualities with time domain simulation data as input. Comparative time domain simulations were performed between the Exulans and other aircraft to compare handling qualities. Eigenvalue analysis was used together with the thumbprint criterion to investigate inherent gull-wing airframe dynamics. The Shomber-Gertsen and Military Specification 8785 criteria were also used for the same purpose. The Neal-Smith method was used to investigate the effect of control authority on handling qualities and the effect of a pilot. The Monnich and Dalldorff criterion was used to evaluate gust handling qualities. An analysis chart by Fremaux and Vairo was used to evaluate the tumbling susceptibility of the gull-wing configuration. The pitch handling quality investigation shows sufficient promise that the swept gull-wing configuration will have acceptable handling qualities with the CG placed at positions associated with optimised aerodynamic performance. Analysis showed that the swept gull-wing configuration is potentially prone to tumbling. With low static margins, the configuration should exhibit improved handling qualities in gusty conditions when compared to existing tailless aircraft. It is recommended that a lateral handling quality study be performed before full scale flight testing commences on the Exulans. In addition, the possibility of wingtip stall must be investigated for the case of the swept gull-wing configuration.
