Abstract:
Will there be any ‘happy dispute’ again? A debate among people holding different opinions that does not end with a repetition of the initial idea, but rather with an improvement of one’s own beliefs and those of others? In order to achieve this, we need to rely on education which, through deliberative debate training activities, can foster the development of rhetorical and dialectical skills (the ability to persuade and compete) as well as critical thinking and open-mindedness (living together and cooperating). A number of scholars from around the world reflect on the topic both from a theoretical point of view – the significance of debate in a hyperconnected society – and from a practical point of view, the application of educational models and tools to measure their effectiveness.

Sie, Maureen. All You Need Is Love(s). Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190460723.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
In this chapter, Maureen Sie argues that our nature as loving beings can explain our nature as moral beings. Because love and morality seem to be similar phenomena in many ways, she distinguishes several kinds of loves and explains how they relate to different moral dimensions of our existence, taking as her starting point C. S. Lewis’s work on the subject and renaming his fourth kind of love “kindness.” She argues that recent findings in affective neuroscience suggest that this fourth kind is a natural kind of love. She discusses the dynamics of Lewis’s account, showing that each of the loves that he distinguishes requires the fourth love (kindness) to keep them from taking a nasty turn. She concludes by explaining why this kind of love actually fits the naturalist picture well if the recent finding that oxytocin is involved in our trusting interactions with strangers is correct.

Jeremy, Jennings-Mares, Pinedo Anna T, and Ireland Oliver. 14 The Single Point of Entry Approach to Bank Resolution. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780198754411.003.0014.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter analyses the single point of entry (SPOE) approach to bank resolution. The strategy involves the application of resolution powers at the level of the top holding or parent company by a single resolution authority. This resolution authority would probably be located in the jurisdiction responsible for the global consolidated supervision of the banking group. The assets and the continuity of operations of subsidiaries are preserved, which avoids the need to commence distinct resolution proceedings at lower levels within the group. Although a resolution led by the home resolution authority may require assistance from a host authority, in terms of the application of resolution tools locally to support the top level resolution, or to bail-in intra-group debt claims, the principle is that no distinct, independent resolution proceedings should be required, as regards local subsidiaries of the group. The chapter addresses both the UK and US approach to SPOE.

Lopes, Dominic McIver. Endless to Dispute. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198827214.003.0010.

Full text
Abstract:
Many philosophers take it to be a central datum in theorizing about aesthetic value that there is something special about aesthetic disputes, which points the way to a correct semantics for aesthetic discourse. Five facts about aesthetic discourse need to be explained: aesthetic disputes are disagreements, they are faultless, they track social boundaries, they principally target properties of items and secondarily traits of judges, and they persist. The chapter argues that a contextualist semantics better fits the facts than does a relativist semantics. The network theory predicts a contextualist semantics: the main point of aesthetic disputes is for agents to coordinate on which aesthetic practice they are participating in. Sometimes, in doing so, they change the practice.

Burrus, Jeremy, Krista D. Mattern, Bobby D. Naemi, and Richard D. Roberts. Do We Really Need to Build Better Students? Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780199373222.003.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter introduces the book by asking the question of whether “building better students” to improve the state of workforce readiness, which is currently experiencing a “skills gap,” is really a necessity. The chapter concludes that building better students is indeed necessary and introduces one theory for how society reached this point. This theory has four components. First, the rate of technological innovation is increasing. Second, this technological innovation has led to more technology usage at work. Third, more technology usage at work has led to a shift in the activities conducted at work. Finally, the shift in work activities has led to employers heavily emphasizing certain skills over others. The skills gap is occurring because our education system has not yet adjusted in accordance with these new emphases. Evidence for each component in the theory is provided.
