Abstract:
Neel [(2004). Acoust. Res. Lett. Online 5, 125–131] asked how much time-varying formant detail is needed for vowel identification. In that study, multiple stimuli were synthesized for each vowel: 1-point (monophthongal with midpoint frequencies), 2-point (linear from onset to offset), 3-point, 5-point, and 11-point. Results suggested that a 3-point model was optimal. This conflicted with the dual-target hypothesis of vowel inherent spectral change research, which has found that two targets are sufficient to model vowel identification. The present study replicates and expands upon the work of Neel. Ten English monophthongs were chosen for synthesis. One-, two-, three-, and five-point vowels were created as described above, and another 1-point stimulus was created with onset frequencies rather than midpoint frequencies. Three experiments were administered ( n = 18 for each): vowel identification, goodness rating, and discrimination. The results ultimately align with the dual-target hypothesis, consistent with most vowel inherent spectral change studies.

Abstract:
It is shown that the magnetocaloric effects are absent in the spin-flop phase of an isotropic antiferromagnet at the T<TN (TN the Neel temperature) and appear only when an applied magnetic field exceeds the critical field of the spin-flip transition. It is displayed as well that the direct magnetocaloric effects in an antiferromagnet above TN are much less that the analogous effects in a ferromagnet above the Curie point TC.

Abstract:
Properties of the parent compound, LaMnO3 are greatly affected by strong Hund's coupling. Assuming the antiferromagnetic ordering (with a low Neel temperture) along one of the cubic axes, this coupling would result in formation of disconnected ferromagnetic layers. Furthermore, in the presence of the cooperative Jahn–Teller effect the compound becomes a band insulator. At small doping ( La 1-x Ca x MnO 3, x ≪ 1) the band insulator phase coexists with the presence of localized holes. An insulator-ferromagnetic metal transition occurs at the percolation point x c =0.16.

Abstract:
In this paper, we address the tripartite quantum discord for the Heisenberg XY chain with the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya (DM) interaction using the quantum renormalization-group (QRG) method. In thermodynamic limit, like the entanglement, the tripartite discord exhibits the quantum phase transition (QPT) between the spin-fluid and the Neel phases. The effect of the DM interaction and the anisotropy on the features of the tripartite quantum discord has been probed. It is noted that the DM interaction brings the critical point earlier and affects heavily with the size of the system. Moreover, the system requires a larger number of the iterations to achieve the QPT for the tripartite quantum discord as compared to the entanglement.

Full text
Abstract:
The two-layer Heisenberg antiferromagnet exhibits a zero temperature quantum phase transition from a disordered dimer phase to a collinear Neel phase, with long range order in the ground state. The spin-wave gap vanishes as Δ ∝ (J ⊥ – J ⊥ c) ν approaching the transition point. To account for strong correlations, the S = 1 elementary excitations triplets are described as a dilute Bose gas with infinite on-site repulsion. We apply the Brueckner diagram approach which gives the critical index ν ≈ 0 . 5. We demonstrate also that the linearised in density Brueckner equations give the mean field result ν = 1. Finally, an expansion of the Brueckner equations in powers of the density, combined with the scaling hypothesis, gives ν ≈ 0 . 67. This value agrees reasonably with that of the nonlinear O(3) σ model. Our approach demonstrates that for other quantum spin models the critical index can be different from that in the nonlinear σ model. We discuss the conditions for this to occur.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Fading Points is a piece of music for large wind ensemble. The work is concerned with time perception and is designed to convey to the listener a long temporal progression from slow music to fast music. To this end, the work is written using musical gestures specifically designed for their portrayal of musical time. The work consists of four sections, each of which is described in detail in the analytical part of the thesis. The analysis also describes the rhythmic language, which is created around short rhythmic cells. These cells are based on ratios and are used in all levels of the piece from the surface rhythm to the large formal divisions. The harmonic language is also described. The vertical harmony is derived from a dense chord presented at the beginning of the piece. The horizontal pitch material is created from small pitch cells, also taken from the opening chord. These cells are used in isolation but are also combined to create modes, which are the focus of the latter parts of the piece.

Avellà, Oliver José Miguel. "Towards label-free biosensing in compact disk technologies f or point-of-need analysis." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de València, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10251/86128.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores new analytical advances using compact disk biosensing technologies, and comprises six scientific publications distributed along four chapters. Special attention is herein payed to Thermochromic Etching Disks (TED) technology (Chapter 1), rational design of disk-based biorecognition assays (Chapter 2), and label-free detection systems for point-of-need analysis (Chapters 3 and 4). First, insights into a novel light-mediated signal developing system for biorecognition assays (based on TED disks and drives) are provided together with an overview of the state-of-the art and future trends in photo- and thermochromic biosensing. This signal developing approach exploits photo- and thermochromism for biosensing in an original manner and represents a potential strategy to simplify signaling processes in bioanalytical systems. Then, how to transform TED technology into lab-on-a-disk systems is addressed. TED has proven to be a very versatile tool to perform sensitive analysis of biorecognition assays, using platforms and scanners easily obtained from regular disks and drives, respectively. Biologically relevant assays of different nature (microarray, cell culture, immunofiltration, turbidimetry, etc.) have been arrayed in a single disk and sensitively analyzed by imaging. Regarding rational design, a theoretical-experimental method (INSEL) based on kinetics and mass-transport modelling for optimizing biorecognition assays and exploring their behavior is presented. INSEL has been implemented as an in silico tool that enables to characterize biointeractions with minimal experimentation, to perform optimizations directed towards custom objectives defined by the user, and to easily compute the effect of critical variables without further experiments. In another study included in this thesis, polycarbonate grooved structures obtained from standard recordable disks (CD-R and DVD-R) were coated with silver and tailored to become SERS-active. This strategy represents a cost-effective and industrially scalable alternative to the SERS substrates typically used for bioanalysis. These disk-based materials have presented tunable plasmonic responses, significant Raman enhancement, and have allowed complex biological targets (such as proteins and exosomes) to be analyzed by SERS without using labeled reagents as tracers. In addition to introduce inexpensive and large-scale SERS substrates for biosensing, this study also suggests the development of prospective Raman scanners based on disk drives. Another approach herein presented addresses the implementation of diffraction-based sensing (DBS) in TED technology in order to conceive disk-based label-free biosensors based on standard disks and drives. At first, a comprehensive experimental assessment of the analytical possibilities offered by DBS is presented. Then, the fabrication of arrays of diffractive protein networks on TED disks is investigated, with which sensitive analysis of antibodies in label-free conditions has been demonstrated, using adapted drives as scanners. This investigation provides important insights into cost-effective and industrially scalable functional materials and detection setups that exploit consumer electronics for label-free biosensing.

Nearly all Boot Campersare unknown to us, which means they’ve had no formal graduatelibrary instruction prior to writing the biggest project of their academiclives. To this end, we offered two new strategy-based workshops, whichwe propose to outline as one single-session presentation at USETDAunder the category of “Student Support and Training” (ImpactfulETD Processing). In Boot Camp, Session One covers data management: physical andvirtual workspace organization, file structure, online data storage andbackups. The emphasis here is on where to put data and how to saveit. Online programs covered include free word processing softwaresuch as Google Docs, Word Online, Shutterbug, and Zoho Docs andcloud storage services such as Google Drive, Microsoft’s OneDrive,Mac’s iCloud Storage, Amazon storage, Box and Dropbox.Session Two of Boot Camp addresses research and citation management.Revamped to include the Association of College and ResearchLibraries (ACRL) Information Literacy Framework’s concepts, wepresent systematic research as a transferable skill, not an isolated casetied to one course or problem. This workshop incorporates criticalthinking into showing students how to construct a search; how tokeep on top of research through folders, feeds, and alerts; and how tomanage citations via Mendeley. After the presentation and discussion, attendees should be able torecognize the significant function librarians perform in a targetedprogram such as Boot Camp convey the value of formal, timelyintervention for graduate students assess the benefits of linking ouroverall methodology to the ACRL Framework replicate our offeringsto support their students at the point of need, and beyond.

Abstract:
Will there be any ‘happy dispute’ again? A debate among people holding different opinions that does not end with a repetition of the initial idea, but rather with an improvement of one’s own beliefs and those of others? In order to achieve this, we need to rely on education which, through deliberative debate training activities, can foster the development of rhetorical and dialectical skills (the ability to persuade and compete) as well as critical thinking and open-mindedness (living together and cooperating). A number of scholars from around the world reflect on the topic both from a theoretical point of view – the significance of debate in a hyperconnected society – and from a practical point of view, the application of educational models and tools to measure their effectiveness.

Abstract:
AbstractAgile methodology purports to deal with uncertainty through continuous monitoring and learning. To do so, we need to see how productivity is faring against our plans, as in the previous chapter. But we also need to communicate what our uncertainty is realistically. This is regularly done for cost, but must also be done for benefit to obtain a complete picture. In this chapter, we show how both benefit points and size points can be instantiated with values reflecting different levels of uncertainty.

Full text
Abstract:
Hyperthermia is a type of cancer treatment in which cancer cells are exposed to high temperatures (up to 44–45°C). Research has shown that high temperatures can damage and kill cancer cells, by a localized and concentrated heating source. By killing cancer cells and damaging proteins and structures within cells, hyperthermia may shrink tumors, with minimal injury to normal tissues. Penne’s bio-heat equation is used to model a heat diffusion process inside a tumor, modeled as a spherical domain with magnetic nanoparticles distributed within the diseased tissue. These magnetic particles are considered as point heat sources. Heat is generated as the result of magnetic relaxation mechanisms (Brownian and Neel relaxation) by the application of alternating magnetic fields. The Bio-Heat equation is solved using Monte Carlo techniques. Monte Carlo simulations are based on departing random walkers from the point where temperature is going to be determined. The probability in each step of the random walk is given by the coefficients of the nodal temperatures after a Finite Difference Discretization of the Penne’s bio-heat diffusion equation. The main advantage of Monte Carlo simulations versus classical numerical methods lies in the possibility of solving the temperature in a specific point without solving for all the points within the domain. This feature and the fact that each random walk is independent from each other results in an easy parallelization of the computer code. Parametric studies of the temperature profiles are carried out to study the effect of different parameters like the heat generation rate, perfusion rate and diameter of the point source on the maximum temperature and on the temperature profile.

Abstract:
The Open Software movement serves as a landmark and a starting point for many “open-something” initiatives, such as Open Educational Resources (OER) and Massive Online Open Courses (MOOC). However, under a pragmatic point-of-view, many of its basic principles are not considered specially when dealing with the above mentioned initiatives: common, industry-standard OER and MOOC lack a considerable set of really open features in a way that deviate the sense of the “O” letter – for Open – in its acronyms. Considering this, the present paper presents a systematization of these concepts around the general principle of openness. There will be discussed some strengths, challenges, and drawbacks in adopting openness as the key for OER and MOOC for Education in 21st Century.

Abstract:
Global climate change, the conversion of large areas of tropical forest to agriculture and rangelands, and forest degradation driven by wildfires are pushing the Amazon towards irreversible thresholds, often called tipping points. We need an immediate deforestation moratorium in areas more likely to cross a tipping point (e.g., Southern Amazon), and in protected areas and Indigenous territories; so that there is zero deforestation in the Amazon by 2030.

Abstract:
This paper presents different types of governance mechanisms that can be present in a specific value chain and explores how these can be used or need to be modified in view of intentions to reduce children’s harmful work. We primarily look at the way that the unobservable process-related quality attributes of a product are currently governed and discussed. We identify interactions/ coordination processes that we feel are relevant for ACHA and likely entrance points for interventions.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite decades of interventions aiming to reduce child labour, children’s engagement with exploitative work remains widespread, particularly in South Asia. Emerging evidence about cash transfer programmes point towards their potential for reducing children’s engagement with work, but knowledge is scarce in terms of their impact on exploitative work and in urban settings. One component of the CLARISSA programme is to trial an innovative ‘cash plus’ intervention and to learn about its potential for reducing children’s harmful and hazardous work in two slum areas in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This Working Paper presents findings from a small-scale qualitative study that was undertaken in late 2019, aiming to inform the design of the cash plus intervention. Findings point towards the potential for cash transfers to reduce the need for children to engage in exploitative work and highlight key considerations for design and delivery, including mode and frequency of delivery and engagement with local leaders and community representatives.
