Abstract:
Australian newspapers in recent years have increased significantly the column space devoted to obituaries. The Sydney Morning Herald, the Australian, the Age, the West Australian, the Herald Sun, the Canberra Times, the Advertiser, and the Courier-Mail now publish them in dedicated sections, often allocating an entire page to the obituary art. Their popularity in Australia follows a pattern established during the 1980s in Britain and the United States. Australian practice has been influenced in particular by developments in British journalism, which has seen a phenomenon described by the Wall Street Journal as ‘an odd revival…the rebirth of long newspaper obituaries’.† In its first incarnation, the obituary can be traced to the newsbooks of England which appeared in the 1660s, during the Restoration. It flowered in the 18th century, in the first daily newspapers and magazines; it grew luxuriant, and sometimes ornate, in the 19th century; it became unfashionable and fell into some general neglect in the 20th. Then, with the appointment of reformist editors and, particularly in Britain, the publication of bigger newspapers by an industry no longer subjected to labour restraint, the obituary itself experienced restoration. Though the momentum of renewed practice has been of mutual rapidity on three continents, there are some significant variations in its application. The American product generally favours a style faithful to news-writing principles so far as timing and content are concerned and is frequently expansive when relating the details of surviving family and funeral arrangements. In Britain, the emphasis is more on creative composition and a recitation of anecdotes, with less of a sense of urgency about news value and a consequent accent on character sketch. Both models, in recent years, have displayed a propensity for explicit appraisal and an increasing willingness to publish obituaries of those who have undermined, rather than adorned, society. Newspapers in Australia, while adopting the obituary with apparent fervour, have found their delivery of the product restrained by a lack of resources. Obituary desks in this country are staffed by a solitary journalist-editor. This has resulted in a reliance, often to an unhealthy degree, on contributions by readers. The tone of this material, with its intimacy of address and excess in sentiment, sits uneasily when appearing on the same page as obituaries syndicated from overseas sources. Contemporary obituary publication in the United States has been subjected to some scholarly analysis in terms of gender balance, identification of cause of death, and the demographic mix of its subject selection. This thesis, by means of a six-month content analysis, addresses such questions for the first time in an Australian context. In addition, it examines issues of style, origin and authorship. It finds that cause of death is identified much less than is the case in American obituary practice, that women are significantly under-represented, and that editing is sometimes haphazard. Nevertheless, the accumulated body of evidence points resolutely to a remarkable reinvigoration of practice in Australia’s daily newspapers. The thesis, by discussing the views of specialists in the field of obituary publication, pursues mechanisms for sustaining the momentum and for improving the product.

Abstract:
How did the scriptural changes contribute to the re-definition the necrological documents in the late Middle Ages and their adaptation to new challenges, so as to allow the performance of their function: ensuring the salvation of the soul of the dead ? The corpus of the diocese of Strasbourg reveals that beyond appearances of tradition, necrological documents diversified, a clearer differentiation between liturgical and administrative manuscripts emerged. Within the more complex documentary network of the memoria, they played a role in the normalisation and rationalisation of liturgical and administrative practices, especially from the fifteenth century onwards. While meeting with the internal needs of religious institutions, they also participated in the reform of the Church and built an anthropological community of the living and the dead

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis deals with the traumatic and memory dimension of undocumented migrants’ deaths (border-related deaths or people-on-the-move deaths, also ‘illegalized’ migrants’ deaths) at the European borders, specifically in the Mediterranean Sea, i.e. the southern European border. As a matter of fact, more than 40,000 people-on-the-move have lost their lives in worldwide increasing externalized, securitized, and militarized borders. In such a deadly scenario, the European southern border, the Mediterranean Sea (divided in West, Central, and East Mediterranean route) has turned into the most perilous and deadliest route. A submerged cemetery, the European ‘sarcophagi’, or the most evident expression of the ‘Fortress Europe’ regime through which necropolitics are applied, ‘crimes of peace/solidarity’ emerge, and heterogeneous forms of violence/violation materialize. Thus, the book proposes a sociocultural and critical psychosocial analysis on empirical data collected through ethnographic work in border-zones, specifically in the Italian island of Lampedusa, and through semi-structured narrative interviews with European activist/’artivist’. The aim is to analyse how practices of trauma construction and memorialization, as personal and collective symbolic/liminal experiences of meaning-making, engage racial, colonial, and violent European policies. A brief overview over migration studies from a historical and social perspective: causes, dynamics, and normative that frame migration heterogeneity. The attention will mainly put on European/Italian situation. The thesis is further structured in the following sections: • A detailed focus over ‘illegalized migrants’ or undocumented migrants which are people-on-the-move who take perilous border routes and risk their lives in crossing them. Using data from different sources, the numeric dimension of the phenomenon will be addressed and critically discussed. • A detailed outline on border, memory, and trauma studies from a transdisciplinary perspective and from the specific perspective of sociocultural psychology. • A methodological/methods description of the research. • Two chapter of analysis, distinguished along a geographical line: border-zones (Lampedusa) and cross-borders experiences. In conclusion, limits and future lines of direction will be highlighted.

Abstract:
This dissertation is a diachronic study of the terminology of women’s ready-to-wear fashion in French mail-order catalogs since the introduction of the ready-to-wear concept in France in the early 1950s. Our work focuses on English borrowings and English-influenced neologisms, compared with neologisms in our corpus as a whole. Our goal is two-fold: we wish, first, to assess the influence of English in this terminology, and second, to delineate trends and mechanisms specific to this field. Based on a study of neologisms, necrologisms, and stable terms in our corpus, we examine terminological renewal, its mechanisms, and its motivations. We compared sub-corpora approximately five years apart, each comprising the catalogs from the Spring-Summer and Fall-Winter collections of a given year. The terms were collected and studied manually. They were first studied synchronically, using secondary sources to establish their etymologies, their definitions, and their types, according to a typology adapted from the Office québécois de la langue française’s typology of borrowings. Secondly, terms were analyzed diachronically using a three-part methodological framework, consisting of the terms from our corpus, of the visuals from the catalogs, and of expert opinions. These analyses drew on theories from linguistics and sociology, while also considering economic and other factors, such as historical and societal events. Our analyses enabled us to show the importance of the English language in this field, as well as the importance of terminological renewal, both frequently cited in academic works. Our corpus demonstrated neological activity that goes beyond the dynamics of fashion and that supports the hypothesis of regular generational terminological renewal. Finally, we propose a reflection on the need for work – linguistic research in particular – in the field of fashion, given the lack of studies on the subject and the shortcomings of dictionary sources

This dissertation is the study of longevity in the metropolitan area of São Paulo / Brazil, by the analysis of the obituaries on Jornal da Tarde, a local paper. The 665 obituaries were analyzed throughout the periods of June, July and August of 2004 and 2005. The goal was to verify the longevity of the elderly residents of the metropolitan area of São Paulo and the aspects contained in the obituaries like: age range of the elderly, marital status, gender prevalence (feminine or masculine), if the elderly left their families and families left by the elderly. Utilized the SPSS (version11.0) to deal with statistics of data, because of the use of multiple choice questions, through a questioner, elaborated from the obituary clippings. The results obtained showed a greater range of age for the feminine gender, of 87,4 years of age with the deviation standard of 8,6 years and, for the masculine gender of 82.1 years with deviation standard of 9 years. In relation to the marital status a big majority of the elderly was in the category of widows and the men in the category of being married/living together. In the marital status without a partner (single, widow, separated/divorced), a bigger frequency of the feminine gender was observed and with a partner (married/living together), a bigger frequency of the masculine gender was noticed. Another significant association was encountered in relation to the marital status, given that the obituaries of the elderly without partners concentrated in the biggest age ranges and with partners in the smallest age ranges. It was not encountered significant association with relation to the families left and type of family left. The process to increase longevity in Brazil can be evidenced by obituaries of the elderly. The longevity is a current phenomenon in the country and it is determined by the highest age reached by the elderly. This process has major predominance in the female gender, being called by feminism of old age
