Abstract:
(1) Background: Little is known about the interlinkages between dietary and plasma non-enzymatic antioxidant capacity (D-NEAC and P-NEAC, respectively) and the body’s antioxidant and inflammation response. Our aim was to explore these associations in 210 participants from two Spanish European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) centers. (2) Methods: D-NEAC was estimated using published NEAC values in food. P-NEAC and total polyphenols (TP) were quantified by FRAP (ferric-reducing antioxidant power), TRAP (total radical-trapping antioxidant parameter), TEAC-ABTS (trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity-Azino Bis Thiazoline Sulfonic), ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) and Folin–Ciocalteu assays. Nutrient antioxidants (carotenes, α-tocopherol, ascorbic acid, retinol, uric acid, Q9 and Q10 coenzymes) and inflammation markers (IL-6, IL-8, CRP, TNF-α, PAI-I, resistin and adiponectin) were also analyzed. Spearman correlation and linear regression analyses were performed in association analyses. Analyses were stratified by covariates and groups were defined using cluster analysis. (3) Results: P-FRAP was correlated with D-NEAC, and significantly associated with P-NEAC in multivariate adjusted models. P-FRAP levels were also significantly associated with plasma antioxidants (log2 scale: TP β = 0.26; ascorbic acid β = 0.03; retinol β = 0.08; α-tocopherol β = 0.05; carotenes β = 0.02; Q10 β = 0.06; uric acid β = 0.25), though not with inflammation-related biomarkers. Different profiles of individuals with varying levels of P-NEAC and biomarkers were found. (4) Conclusions: P-NEAC levels were to some extent associated with D-NEAC and plasma antioxidants, yet not associated with inflammation response.

Abstract:
We examined the association of dietary non-enzymatic antioxidant capacity (NEAC) in overall diet, and separately from foods and beverages, with serum liver enzymes in a Japanese working population. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 1791 employees aged 18–69 years, who underwent a comprehensive health checkup in 2012–2013. A brief validated self-administered diet-history questionnaire was used for dietary assessment, and dietary NEAC intake was determined from databases of NEAC values, obtained using ferric reducing-antioxidant power (FRAP) and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assays. The dietary NEAC intake was calculated by multiplying the estimated NEAC values by the amounts consumed and summing the resulting values. A multiple-regression analysis was performed to explore the association between dietary NEAC intake and the serum levels of liver enzymes (aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT)), after adjustment for confounding factors. No significant associations were found between overall dietary NEAC intake and AST (FRAP, p for trend = 0.97; ORAC, p = 0.72), ALT (FRAP, p = 0.73; ORAC, p = 0.92), and GGT (FRAP, p = 0.96; ORAC, p = 0.19) levels. Food-derived, but not beverage-derived, NEAC intake was inversely associated with serum GGT levels (FRAP, p for trend = 0.001; ORAC, p = 0.02), particularly among older participants and those with high serum ferritin concentrations. The results imply that overall dietary NEAC intake is not associated with liver dysfunction, and that the NEAC values from foods may be inversely associated with serum GGT levels.

Abstract:
Abstract With the decline of many of the world’s fisheries, increased regulation, including marine protected areas (MPA), forms an increasingly important role in promoting sustainable resource use. Here, we present a novel “real-time” genetic monitoring programme used to protect the depleted Norwegian coastal cod stock (NCC) in an MPA during the spawning season, while a fishery targeted at the sustainable Northeast Arctic cod stock (NEAC) operates immediately outside. In the period 2009–2016, >6800 cod from the fishery were genotyped with the PanI locus that is discriminatory between these two stocks. The estimated fraction of NEAC increased during the study period until 2014; however, it did not exceed 70% for any sustained period. Therefore, the MPA remained closed for commercial harvest. Genetic analysis of eggs revealed a distinctly lower fraction of NEAC than in the catch from the adult stock, both immediately outside and within the MPA itself. We suggest that this discrepancy is likely to reflect differences in spawning areas used by NCC and NEAC. Estimated fractions of NEAC/NCC using PanI, otolith classification, and 39 single nucleotide polymorphisms were similar, thus validating the use of PanI to estimate NEAC/NCC composition.

Abstract:
Dietary polyphenols have been shown to scavenge free radicals, modulating cellular redox transcription factors in different in vitro and ex vivo models. Dietary intervention studies have shown that consumption of plant foods modulates plasma Non-Enzymatic Antioxidant Capacity (NEAC), a biomarker of the endogenous antioxidant network, in human subjects. However, the identification of the molecules responsible for this effect are yet to be obtained and evidences of an antioxidant in vivo action of polyphenols are conflicting. There is a clear discrepancy between polyphenols (PP) concentration in body fluids and the extent of increase of plasma NEAC. The low degree of absorption and the extensive metabolism of PP within the body have raised questions about their contribution to the endogenous antioxidant network. This work will discuss the role of polyphenols from galenic preparation, food extracts, and selected dietary sources as modulators of plasma NEAC in humans.

Abstract Michalsen, K., Johannesen, E., and Bogstad, B. 2008. Feeding of mature cod (Gadus morhua) on the spawning grounds in Lofoten. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 65: 571–580. Many authors state that cod (Gadus morhua) do not feed during the spawning period. However, this more or less established fact has rarely been investigated in the field. Here, the content of stomachs from Northeast Arctic cod (NEAC) and Norwegian coastal cod (NCC) sampled from the spawning ground in Lofoten were examined over a 10-year period (1996–2006). The occurrence of food in the stomachs of spawning cod, stomach fullness, diet composition, and variation in these variables between NEAC and NCC, year, and sex were analysed and compared. The analysis shows that cod do feed, even when they are in a spawning state. NCC had a lower proportion of empty stomachs and the stomachs were fuller than those from NEAC. Females had a lower proportion of empty stomachs than males and their stomachs were in general fuller. Herring (Clupea harengus) dominated the diet of cod. However, cod consumption of herring on the spawning grounds seems to be a minor source of mortality on herring. Although spawning cod do feed, the proportion of empty stomachs was higher and stomach fullness was lower than in stomachs of NEAC from the Barents Sea.

Abstract:
Non-enzymatic antioxidant capacity (NEAC) represents a sensitive biomarker measuring thein vivoantioxidant potential of vegetable foods. To evaluate the effectiveness of plant-derived foods and beverages on the plasma non-enzymatic antioxidant system, we analysed all literature published upto May 2010. Data were extracted by two authors independently, and the effect size was summarised using standardised mean differences by a random-effects model. For the analysis, eighty-eight studies were included, reporting a total number of 122 interventions and involving 2890 subjects. There was overall evidence of the effectiveness of fruit, vegetables, dietary patterns based on plant foods, red wine and tea in increasing plasma NEAC. No changes were found for chocolate and fruit juices. We observed an overall effect size three times higher in subjects with risk factors when compared with healthy subjects. Total radical-trapping antioxidant parameter, oxygen radical absorbance capacity and ferric-reducing antioxidant power methods showed a similar increase in plasma NEAC following dietary supplementation, whereas Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity did not respond to dietary supplementation. Data from the present meta-analysis show that plant-derived foods represent an effective strategy to enhance an endogenous antioxidant network in humans. This is particularly evident in the presence of oxidative stress-related risk factors.

Abstract:
Inflammation and antioxidant capacity have been associated with colorectal and breast cancer. We computed the dietary inflammatory index (DII®), and the total dietary non-enzymatic antioxidant capacity (NEAC) and associated them with colorectal and breast cancer risk in the population-based multi case-control study in Spain (MCC-Spain). We included 1852 colorectal cancer and 1567 breast cancer cases, and 3447 and 1486 population controls, respectively. DII score and NEAC were derived using data from a semi-quantitative validated food frequency questionnaire. Unconditional logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) for energy-adjusted DII (E-DII), and a score combining E-DII and NEAC. E-DII was associated with colorectal cancer risk (OR = 1.93, highest quartile versus lowest, 95%CI:1.60–2.32; p-trend: <0.001); this increase was observed for both colon and rectal cancer. Less pronounced increased risks were observed for breast cancer (OR = 1.22, highest quartile versus lowest, 95%CI:0.99–1.52, p-trend: >0.10). The combined score of high E-DII scores and low antioxidant values were associated with colorectal cancer risk (OR = 1.48, highest quartile versus lowest, 95%CI: 1.26–1.74; p-trend: <0.001), but not breast cancer. This study provides evidence that a pro-inflammatory diet is associated with increased colorectal cancer risk while findings for breast cancer were less consistent.

Abstract Geffen, A. J., Høie, H., Folkvord, A., Hufthammer, A. K., Andersson, C., Ninnemann, U., Pedersen, R. B., and Nedreaas, K. 2011. High-latitude climate variability and its effect on fisheries resources as revealed by fossil cod otoliths. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 68: 1081–1089. Cod (Gadus morhua) otoliths from archaeological sites in northern Norway were analysed to reconstruct the temperature regime and determine the age structure, growth, and population identity of the fish harvested. Otoliths were selected from late- and post-medieval sites (700–300 years ago) to evaluate historical changes in the geographic region that matches the present-day stocks of Northeast Arctic cod (NEAC) and Norwegian coastal cod (NCC). Seasonal temperature cycles were reconstructed from stable isotope (δ18O) measurements along transects representing fish ages 1.5–3 years old. Reconstructions of the size, age, and growth characteristics of individual fish were based on otolith growth increments. The geographical source and stock identity of the individuals were estimated based on otolith elemental composition and otolith growth features. Both NCC and NEAC fish were represented at Måsøy and Vanna. The results indicate that fishing at Vanna exploited NEAC during their spawning migration, compared with fishing at Måsøy, which was restricted to more coastal fish. Fish growth patterns appeared to be affected by changes in the temperature regimes as estimated from otolith δ18O and back-calculated fish length-at-age, with evident differences between pre- and post-1600 periods.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of premature death and disability in the world. A diet containing high amounts of plant-based foods has been associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases and the beneficial effect has been attributed to the antioxidants found in the foods. However, findings from randomized controlled trials on the role of antioxidant supplementation have been disappointing, reporting null results or even harmful effects. It has been suggested that antioxidants interact with each other to promote cardiovascular health. Therefore, the Non Enzymatic Antioxidant Capacity (NEAC) assay has been proposed, which measures the antioxidant potential of different dietary sources considering interactions between them. This thesis aimed to further clarify the effect of dietary antioxidants on the risk of cardiovascular diseases, with particular interest in measuring NEAC from diet. The specific aims were to prospectively study whether dietary NEAC is associated with a lower risk of myocardial infarction, stroke and heart failure in subjects free from CVD or cancer. Four studies were conducted using data from two large Swedish cohorts. Multivariable Cox proportional hazard regression models were fitted to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). In the Swedish Women’s Lifestyle and Health Cohort (n = 45,882), a higher baseline dietary NEAC was inversely associated with the risk of myocardial infarction (quintile 5 vs. quintile 1: HR: 0.60, 95% CI: 0.45-0.81, p for trend < 0.05) and heart failure (tertile 3 vs. tertile 1: HR: 0.63; 95% CI: 0.43-0.93; p for trend < 0.05) in young to middle aged women, whereas no association was found between dietary NEAC and stroke. In the Swedish National March Cohort (n = 34,543), dietary NEAC was inversely associated with the risk of overall (quartile 4 vs. quartile 1: HR: 0.77, 95% CI: 0.61-0.96; p for trend < 0.05) and non-fatal myocardial infarction (quartile 4 vs. quartile 1: HR: 0.72; 95% CI: 0.56-0.92; p for trend < 0.05), but not with fatal myocardial infarction. The association seemed to further be stronger in women compared to men. To conclude, these findings support the hypothesis that a diet with high NEAC might protect from the development of myocardial infarction and heart failure and that the beneficial effect might be exerted through interactions between antioxidants. Whether this is true for stroke needs to be further investigated. Nevertheless, it is suggested to implement high amounts of antioxidant rich foods and beverages, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and tea, in the daily diet to lower the burden of cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract:
A series of crop rotations were evaluated for their impacts on soil-borne populations of root lesion nematodes, Pratylenchus neglectus. Population changes, measured as the ratio of P. neglectus adults counted at harvest to those counted at planting time, was recorded under a series of two-year rotations alternating winter wheat with either fallow, barley, pea, lentil, canola, and camelina. Fallow, barley, pea, and camelina were found to have a neutral effect on nematode populations (p < 0.001). Winter wheat and canola caused significant increases in populations, while lentils caused significant decreases (p < 0.001). Populations were sustained through winter following winter wheat and barley, but not canola, camelina, pea, lentil, or fallow treatments (p < 0.001). In addition to the rotation study, cultivars of barley and canola were evaluated for their resistance to P. neglectus. Greenhouse trials for barley showed significant differences among 19 cultivars tested (p < 0.001), with a 5-fold difference in P. neglectus multiplication separating the least- from the most resistant. Separation among cultivars was not found with canola (p = 0.20). The information gathered in this study will help Montana wheat growers better understand the impacts of their crop selections on this important pest.

The Numerical Electromagnetics Code (NEC) was used to evaluate the admittance, average power gain, and the electric near and far field of a monopole antenna mounted on a cubical box over a perfectly conducting ground plane. Two models of the box, employing surface patches and wire grids, were evaluated. The monopole was positioned at the center, the edge, and at a corner of the box's top surface. Admittance and average power gain of the antenna were calculated. NEC results were examined and compared with experimental data and with results from "PATCH", another independent electromagnetic modeling code. The near electric field was calculated for both models. Computer graphics techniques were presented for plotting NEC near field results using DISSPLA (Display Integrated Software System and Plotting Language), a commercial graphics package. Contour and 3-D amplitude, and phase plots of the near electric fields were presented. Radiation patterns were calculated to relate far field and near field behavior of the antenna. Surface patch and wire grid models are compared and conclusions were presented.

Abstract: Background: The concept of neonatal near miss has been proposed as a tool to assess the quality of care to neonates suffering any life-threatening condition. However, there are still no internationally accepted concepts or criteria to define or identify these cases of neonatal near miss. The purpose of this study is to perform a systematic review on markers that are able to identify cases of neonatal near miss and to predict neonatal mortality. Methods: Electronic searches were performed in the databases of Pubmed, Embase and Scielo, with no restriction of time period or language. For that, the term "neonatal near miss" was used alone or in association with terms related to neonatal morbidity and mortality and to the scores of neonatal severity. The first step of selection was based on the titles of articles, the second on their abstracts and the third on the full article. Two researchers independently performed the study selection and data extraction. The characteristics of data did not allow for proceeding with a metanalysis. Results: Using the predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, only four articles were selected. Preterm and perinatal asphyxia were used as markers of near miss in all of them. It was observed that the neonatal near miss ratio was between 2.6 to 8 times higher than the neonatal mortality. Conclusions: The development of concept and criteria for neonatal near miss neonatal seems to be an important tool for the assessment of health care provided to neonates and the first step to build management strategies to contribute for decreasing mortality and sequelae in the future life of these children

Abstract:
Prior to 1990, the only well known ideal-hereditary Kurosh-Amitsur radicals in the variety of zero-symmetric near-rings were the Jacobson type radicals Iv(N) , where ∨∈{2,3} and the Brown-McCoy radical. In 1990, Booth, Groenewald and Veldsman introduced the concept of an equiprime near-ring which leads to an ideal-hereditary Kurosh-Amitsur radical in N∘. The concept of an equiprime near-ring generalizes the concept of a prime ring to near-rings. Although the search for more ideal-hereditary radicals of near-rings was apparently the original motivation for the introduction of equiprime near-rings, it became clear that these near-rings are interesting in their own right. It is our aim in this treatise to give an exposition of the many interesting properties of equiprime near-rings. We begin with a brief reminder of near-ring rudiments; giving basic definitions and elementary results which are necessary for understanding and development of subsequent chapters. With the basics out of the way, our main task begins with a consideration of equiprime, strongly and completely equiprime left ideals. It is noted that any zero-symmetric near-ring can be embedded in an equiprime near-ring. Moreover, the class of equiprime near-rings is shown to be hereditary. Open questions arising out of the study of equiprime near-rings are highlighted along the way. In Chapter 3 we consider well known examples of near-rings and determine when such near-rings are equiprime. This provides more insight into the nature of equiprime near-rings and is a fertile ground for the birth of examples and counterexamples which may be used to close or solve some open question within the literature. We also prove some results which generalize some results of Booth and Hall [10] and Veldsman [29]. These results have not been previously presented elsewhere to the best of our knowledge. vii In Chapter 4, the equiprime near-rings are shown to yield an ideal-hereditary radical in N∘. It is shown that a special radical theory can be built on the equiprime nearrings in much the same way prime rings are used in ring theory to define special radical classes of rings.

Samadi, Samira. "Near-optimal Herding." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/50167.

Full text
Abstract:
Herding is an algorithm of recent interest in the machine learning community, motivated by inference in Markov random fields. It solves the following Sampling Problem: given a set Χ \subset R^d with mean μ, construct an infinite sequence of points from Χ such that, for every t ≥ 1, the mean of the first t points in that sequence lies within Euclidean distance O(1/t) of μ. The error of a solution to Sampling Problem is defined to be the distance between the empirical mean of the first t samples and the original mean μ. The O(1/t) error bound suppresses the dependence on d and Χ. In this thesis, we study the best dependence on d and |Χ| that can be achieved for the error in Sampling Problem. Known analysis of the Herding algorithm give an error bound that depends on geometric properties of Χ but, even under favorable conditions, this bound depends linearly on d. We first show that any algorithm for the Sampling Problem must have error Ω(√d/t). Afterward, we present a new polynomial-time algorithm that solves the Sampling Problem with error O(√d log^2.5|Χ|/t) assuming that Χ is finite. This implies that our algorithm is optimal to within logarithmic factors. Finally, we prove that the actual error of the Herding Algorithm is strictly worse than the error of our algorithm if we measure the error in the infinity-norm. Our algorithm is randomized and based on recent algorithmic results in discrepancy theory. We implement our algorithm and other potential solutions for the Sampling Problem and evaluate them on various inputs.

Siehler, Jacob A. "Near-Group Categories." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/26962.

Full text
Abstract:
We consider the possibility of semisimple tensor categories whose fusion rule includes exactly one noninvertible simple object, so-called near-group categories. Data describing the fusion rule is reduced to an abelian group G and a nonnegative integer k. Conditions are given, in terms of G and k, for the existence or nonexistence of coherent associative structures for such fusion rules (ie, solutions to MacLane's pentagon equation). An explicit construction of matrix solutions to the pentagon equations is given for the cases where we establish existence, and classification of the distinct solutions is carried out partially. Many of these associative structures also support (braided) commutative and tortile structures and we indicate when the additional structures are possible. Small examples are presented in detail suitable for use in computational applications.

Dempster, Michaux. "Damn Near Perfect." VCU Scholars Compass, 2006. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd_retro/45.

Full text
Abstract:
Damn Near Perfect is the first section of the second draft of a novel. It is a romance and a coming-of-age story, about an conservatively raised young man, Reese McEwan. On a Mardi Gras visit to Louisiana, Reese falls in love with Noel Guillory, a bisexual poet finishing her last year at Louisiana State University. Reese also dreams of becoming a woodworker, and wants to serve as an apprentice at his family's furniture workshop; his parents oppose this wish and his relationship with Noel. From an affluent, Protestant background, Reese is a senior at Hampden-Sydney College, one of the last all male colleges in the U.S. He has been raised to take for granted his culture's very traditional, conservative values, and at the opening of the book has met with nothing to dispute these ideas. During the course of the novel, Reese abandons his education and traditional lifestyle. Because of his fascination with Noel and how she lives her life, he tries to become a part of her world, to his and her cost, and possibly to their benefit. Most of the novel is set in Baton Rouge, where Noel is finishing school at LSU, and where Reese goes to pursue her. The year is 1992. This first section is one hundred and four pages long, and covers the time from the beginning of Reese's visit to Louisiana, to when he goes back to school in Virginia. The second section, of about fifty pages or less, will cover his time back at college; until he decides to abandon his pursuit of a college degree and move to Baton Rouge permanently, in order to be with Noel and pursue a new career in woodworking. The final section, about one hundred pages in length, will cover Reese's attempts to build a relationship with Noel, and his frustrations with her much more liberal view of what a dating relationship should be.Damn Near Perfect explores how we decide who we will to grow up to be; what kind of relationship we want, what kind of person makes us happy, and what kind of person, in turn, we can make happy. It is about staking our claims to fulfillment - in love, work, and family, and about what our claims sometimes cost us.

Abstract:
Abstract Due to the particularity of the nuclear-related event, even if it does not have any serious consequences, or even does not occur in China, it may also bring a greater risk of public opinion, that is, the technical risk is low but the public opinion risk is high. In order to provide a scientific basis to identify the impact of Nuclear-related Event occurred in countries Around China (NEAC) on China, we established an integrated classification framework of public opinion risks related to these events, and the indicators of each evaluation dimension have been identified. In another aspect, based on the theory of crisis life cycle and the theory of crisis management 4R, some suggestions on the response strategy of the public opinion risk caused by NEAC were proposed in this paper.
