Abstract:

Traffic and Feature SW is a department based in Kista. At this department the main processor software, or MPSW in short, in Ericssons Radio Base Stations is tested prior to integration of new releases. Traffic and Feature SW, also called MPSW in this thesis, works closely with another department of Ericsson called RBS System I&V which tests the same software but for complete RBS nodes. MPSW uses black- and greybox scripted testing in regression suites that are executed on a daily basis. These regression suites are separated into different subsets of functionality that maps to the capabilities of the Radio Base Station software. The authors of this thesis has performed an implementation of automated test cases for a subset of the Radio Base Station software using an automated software tool called QuickCheck. These test cases were successfully integrated into the test framework and were able to find several issues with the main processor software and its subsystems in the Radio Base Station. The commissioner of this thesis have plans to further integrate the QuickCheck tool into the test framework, possibly automating test cases for several subsets of the Radio Base Station software. The authors have therefore analysed and put forth metrics that compares the testing of the Radio Base Station software using QuickCheck with the conventional regression test cases. These metrics covers areas such as the cost related to and the inherent capabilities of QuickCheck. The evaluation of these metrics was performed by the authors to give the commissioner decisive information. These evaluations showed that QuickCheck was able to generate complex message stuctures in complex sequences. QuickCheck was also able to shrink both the content of these messages and the length of the sequences of messages to be able to provide a minimal counterexample when a fault was discovered. The only metric that QuickCheck failed to support was to inherit functionality to support the handling of statistics from executions.

Abstract:
This project explores internet memes, pinpointing the utilisation of image macros by online-based basketball fans, as a cultural tool for communication, conversation, critique and debate. More specifically, this study focuses on how basketball fans, through image macros, are engaging with different facets of culture, beyond professional sports. The nature of internet memes allow users to create texts that express the tone of their feelings, and this research contends that the idiosyncratic nature of basketball memes are motivated by non-serious sports-related banter, and yet, can potentially offer legitimate cultural insight by often drawing on popular cultural myths and trends.

Geng, Jie. "Development of Nbss/Nb5Si3 based in situ composites." Thesis, University of Surrey, 2006. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/842934/.

Full text
Abstract:
Nb-Si-Cr-Al-Mo base in situ composites with nominal compositions Nb-18Si-5Al-5Cr-5Mo (JG1), Nb-24Ti-18Si-5Al-5Cr-5Mo (JG2), Nb-24Ti-18Si-5Al-5Cr-2Mo (JG3), Nb-24Ti-18Si-5Al- 5Cr-2Mo-5Hf (JG4) and Nb-24Ti-18Si-5Al-5Cr-2Mo-5Hf-5Sn (JG6) were prepared by arc-melting followed by heat treatment. The effects of Mo, Ti, Hf and Sn additions on phase selection, phase transformations, microstructure and oxidation behaviour in the as cast and heat-treated in situ composites were investigated using XRD, SEM, and EPMA. All the alloys are classified as hyper-eutectic alloys since the betaNb5Si3 phase was formed in all the as cast microstructures. After heat treatment, the betaNb5Si3 partly transformed to the alphaNb5Si3 in the presence of Ti. The addition of Ti stabilised the betaNb5Si3 to lower temperatures and increased the solubilities of A1 and Cr in the Nb88. The lattice parameter of the Nb88 increased after heat treatment. This is attributed to the redistribution of solutes between the Nbss and the intermetallic phases and in particular the reduction in Si content. The NbaSi phase was formed in the as cast Hf-free alloys (JGl, JG2 and JG3). However, this phase was unstable at 1500°C and decomposed by a eutectoid transformation to Nb88 and alphaNb5Si3. The eutectoid decomposition was enhanced considerably by the Ti addition. The formation of Nb3Si was suppressed by the Hf addition. In the presence of Ti and Hf, there were Ti and Hf segregations in the Nb5Si3 phase. The Ti solubility in the Hf-rich Nb5Si3 was higher than in the Nb5Si3. The structure of the Nb5Si3 phase was mainly affected by the Hf addition, which prompted the formation of the alphaNb5Si3. The Hf-rich regions in the 5-3 silicide probably corresponded to the alphaNb5Si3, which was stable up to 1500° C in the presence of Hf. The alloying elements Hf and Sn preferentially substituted for Nb in the Nb5Si3 and Nbss, respectively. The addition of Sn had a significant effect on the Nbss, essentially leading to the formation of Sn-rich and Sn-poor parts in the solid solution in the as cast microstructure. In the presence of Sn, the Si solubility in the Nbss increased considerably whilst the Cr solubility decreased. The Sn addition promoted the formation of the Si-rich 014 Laves phase and stabilised this phase at 1300°C. The solubility range of Si in the C14 Laves phase formed in alloys of this study was ~ 6.6 to 10.5at.%. For the Ti containing alloys, titanium nitride formed near the surface of the specimen during heat treatment. Alloy Nb-18Si-15Cr (JG5) was studied to clarify the disputed three-phase fields (Nbss-1-0144- alphaNb5Si3 or Nbss-CrNbSi-l-alphaNb5Si3) near the Nb corner. The C14 Laves formed in both the as cast and heat treated samples. The results confirmed that the C14 Laves phase in the binary Nb-Cr system was stabilised by Si to lower temperatures.

Beaulieu, Daniel Ryan. "A Framing Analysis: The NBA's "One-And-Done"Rule." Scholar Commons, 2012. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/4288.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2006, the NBA introduced the "one-and-done" rule that restricted high school graduates to enter directly into the NBA draft following high school. In turn, a high school prospect would essentially now have the option of playing professionally elsewhere (most likely overseas), enter the NBA's Developmental League, or play NCAA basketball. The rule has proved to be quite controversial, as it has had a great effect on both NBA and NCAA basketball, as well as the players. Various media outlets have been quite vocal not only about the rule itself, but the perceived effects it has had on both collegiate and professional basketball. This study will utilize framing theory to explore the way the media has presented the issue to the public, its causal interpretation, any moral evaluations necessary, and any solutions to the problem. This study will utilize a content analysis to analyze not only the media's presentation of the rule, but also what frames have been formed pertaining to the rule's successes and failures. The study will also aim to give a greater understanding of how the basketball media form frames.

Developing, implementing and evaluating models of care that reduce the caesarean section (CS) rate have been a health care priority in Australia since the 1990’s. There is minimal evidence examining models of care that aim to nurture women’s emotional well-being after CS; as well as providing consistent evidence-based information and promoting safe and successful vaginal birth in the subsequent pregnancy. Furthermore the experiences of midwives working in these models have been overlooked.

In my thesis, I present the methods I use to predict NBA games using matrix factorization. Matrix factorization is popular through the Netflix recommendation problem, but in general, one can apply it to data that are best modeled as the result of pairwise interaction. My thesis contains three parts. First, I explain how I model NBA prediction as a matrix factorization problem and use the basic low-rank matrix factorization approach to discover structure in the data. I also explain some differences between using matrix factorization for NBA prediction versus that in the Netflix recommendation problem. Second, I use probabilistic matrix factorization (PMF) to incorporate the fact that when two teams play each other, the scores will be different each time. Lastly, I incorporate supplementary information such as the date of the game by combining multiple PMF problems using Gaussian process priors. I replace the scalar latent features with functions of this supplementary information to aid with prediction.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Richard, S.J. McGowan
At the very core of the National Basketball Association’s labor negotiations between the owners and the players during the 2011 lockout was the league’s argument that its economic structure was broken. Owners contended that the NBA’s soft salary cap system, and the resulting payroll disparity, has put small-market franchises at a talent disadvantage and produced a league of haves and have-nots. To remedy this purported competitive balance problem, the owners demanded severe policy measures to decrease the pay dispersion among teams. However, the players union cautioned that these hardline provisions were merely an attempt to transfer wealth from players to owners. This charge warranted further analysis. Existing literature on this topic is either outdated or insufficient in scope. As such, using regression analysis, this thesis evaluated the league’s argument and determined to what extent the league’s soft salary cap system has contributed to its competitive imbalance. The empirical analysis of this thesis produced several meaningful conclusions. While the NBA has relative imbalance, it does not affect consumer demand for the regular season product. Moreover, while pay dispersion exists, additional salary expenditures only marginally add to a team’s winning percentage. There is no significant relationship between payroll disparity and competitive balance. Finally, with the escalating importance of media rights contracts and the historical appreciation of franchise valuation, the league overstated the financial distress of most of its small-market owners. Overall, the NBA and its owners used deceptive rhetoric and misleading economic policies to decrease player salaries, not to increase competitive balance, in a collusive effort to maximize profits and reassert its diminishing monopsony power in an increasingly star-driven league

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Christopher Maxwell
In this paper I present an econometric analysis of selection bias in the NBA Draft from 1995-2003. Employing an interval regression maximum likelihood control model that predicts the eventual value of players based on their Draft position, I pinpoint which groups of players consistently over-perform or under-perform relative to their Draft position. Using this analysis I detect bias pertaining to four different groups of players. There was a bias against high school players, especially those taken in the lottery (the top of the first round of the Draft), which may point to risk-averse tendencies of NBA teams. There was also a bias in favor of centers taken in the lottery, who were consistently drafted too high. Black players were selected too low in the first round, and too high in the second round. The final effect deals with foreign entrants to the Draft. From 1995-2001 foreigners were drafted too low; in 2002 and 2003, when more foreigners were selected, they were drafted too high. My paper details the nature of these biases and analyzes their potential causes

Abstract:
A stratified random sample of 144 NBA basketball games was taken over a three-year period, between 2008 and 2011. Models were developed to predict point spread and to estimate the probability of a specific team winning based on various in-game statistics. Statistics significant in the model were field-goal shooting percentage, three-point shooting percentage, free-throw shooting percentage, offensive rebounds, assists, turnovers, and free-throws attempted. Models were verified using exact in-game statistics for a random sample of 50 NBA games taken during the 2011-2012 season with 88-94% accuracy. Three methods were used to estimate in-game statistics of future games so that the models could be used to predict a winner in games played by Team A and Team B. Models using these methods had accuracies of approximately 62%. Seasonal averages for these in-game statistics were used in the model developed to predict the winner of each game for the 2013-2016 NBA Championships.

Abstract:
The topic of the thesis is the monetary policy of the National Bank of Slovakia and the adoption of euro. The content of the thesis is divided into two parts, theoretical and practical. The first part is devoted to the main representative of monetary policy in Slovakia, the National Bank of Slovakia, and description of the activities performed and the tools used while implementing the policy. In addition, the work focuses on the prerequisite of adoption of the common European currency, namely the formation and the history of the economic and monetary union. The main objective, the practical part of the thesis, is the secondary research analysis devoted to the implementation of monetary policy of the National Bank of Slovakia from the Bank's formation itself, through very important events such as change in FX rate in 1998, access to the ERM II system in 2005, adoption of euro in 2009 till the present time. In the final chapter, the thesis focuses on the evaluation of euro adoption in Slovakia via primary research conducted through questionnaire designed for Slovak citizens. Closure part consists of my personal analysis of euro implementation whereby I'll remit to advantages just as disadvantages which have been caused by our new mutual currency.

Abstract:
This thesis is centered on the application of the Normalized Biomass Size Spectra (NBSS) theory to the study of plankton systems in shelf and oceanic areas of the tropical and subtropical Southwest Atlantic. I evaluated NBSS parameters over different environmental settings and their utility as proxies for system in Brazilian waters. The LOPC and the ZooScan are recently developed optical systems to automatically detect and measure plankton and particle size distributions in situ and in laboratory, respectively. I present two case studies: the first deals with the spatial variability over the Abrolhos Bank and adjacent oceanic areas in tropical latitudes, and the second focuses on temporal variability of plankton communities along a 5-year time series on a fixed station on the inner shelf at a subtropical location (Ubatuba, São Paulo). The data sets consisted of vertical profiles obtained with a LOPC and plankton preserved samples collected with a 200-m-mesh net. I observed in both data sets the accumulation of small particles (< 1 mm) above and within the pycnocline. NBSS slopes and intercepts were significantly different according to the contrasting environmental conditions observed in both areas; higher intercepts and steeper slopes were associated with higher productivity. The results highlight: i) water-column stratification as a key feature driving particle and plankton vertical distribution, ii) NBSS parameters as indicators of different environmental settings, and iii) that the cold and nutrient-rich South Atlantic Central Water (SACW) have an important role structuring the zooplankton size distributions over the Abrolhos Bank and vicinities and off Ubatuba. The NBSS parameters associated with information on plankton composition and distributions provided important information to evaluate the influence of oceanographic forcing on plankton dynamics in distinct ecosystems of the Southwest Atlantic

This research has been conducted within the field of industrial engineering and computer science. Emphasis in this study has been on machine learning and to what extent it can be used to predict the recipients of individual awards in sports, based on the data behind their performances. For this work, different machine learning algorithms have been used and evaluated to predict the outcome of the “most valuable player” award in the National Basketball Association. Quantitative data have been gathered from almost 20 seasons to build a base for the machine learning fitting. The selection of features and tuning of hyperparameters have been optimized to improve the predictions. The algorithms have been gauged and compared in different ways to find out how to maximize the accuracy. The conclusion of the study was that the results can be predicted with an R2-score higher than 80% and that each method that was tested predicted more than half of the MVPs.

Abstract:
The National Basketball Association (NBA) has recently come under scrutiny from media and fans due to the perception that some franchises are losing games on purpose in an attempt to win a higher draft pick. While researchers have concluded tanking does exist in the NBA, this is the first paper to analyze the strategy’s success in terms of generating increases in future winning percentage or future franchise value. This paper, through panel data regressions controlling for fixed effects for 21 seasons, has found that tanking does have a large impact on future winning percentage. A team that tanks typically sees a significant increase in wins of approximately 9.87 games between the 2nd and 4th year after the team tanked. These results have large implications for the league as the NBA recently began draft reform discussions to reduce the incentive to tank. This paper validates the leagues’ belief that draft reform must occur as tanking can give an unfair advantage in future years.

Unexpected events often occur in the world of sports. In my thesis, I present work that models the NBA. My goal was to build a model of the NBA Machine Learning and other statistical tools in order to better make predictions and quantify unexpected events. In my thesis, I first review other quantitative models of the NBA. Second, I present novel features extracted from NBA play-by-play data that I use in building my predictive models. Third, I propose predictive models that use team-level statistics. In the team models, I show that team strength relations might not be transitive in these models. Fourth, I propose predictive models that use player-level statistics. In these player-level models, I demonstrate that taking the context of a play into account is important in making useful prediction. Finally, I analyze the effectiveness of the different models I created, and propose suggestions for future lines of inquiry.

Basketball is a team game, and an important task for coaches is analyzing the effectiveness of various offensive plays. Currently, teams spend a great deal of time examining video of past games. If teams could automatically classify plays, they could more effectively analyze their own plays and scout their opponents. In this thesis, we develop a methodology to help automatically classify a set of NBA plays using data from the SportVU optical tracking system, which tracks the position of each player and the ball 25 times per second. The problem is made challenging by the variations in how a play is run, the high proportion of possessions where no set play is run, the variance in length of plays, and the difficulty of acquiring a large number of labeled plays. We develop a framework for classifying plays using supervised machine learning. In our approach, we incorporate a novel sliding block algorithm that improves our classifier by accounting for the difference in play lengths. We also use a variant of the traditional one vs. all multi-class SVM. This approach is well suited to distinguish labeled plays from free motion and unlabeled plays. This thesis demonstrates that we can use SportVU data to automatically differentiate plays. We selected a total of six plays to classify, where each play had at least 20 labeled instances. We also added a large selection of plays that were not one of these six and labeled them as Other. Our framework correctly predicted the play with an accuracy of 72.6% and an F-score of .727. We also propose a framework, based on our engineered features, to extend our research to unlabeled plays.

Full text
Abstract:
ZSM-5 is an aluminosilicate zeolite with high Si/Al ratio with suitable properties for catalysis, ion exchange, adsorption and membrane applications. The main goal of this thesis was to study the growth of ZSM-5 zeolite crystals from inexpensive natural sources of silica and alumina, as well as n-butylamine (NBA) as a low-cost structure directing agent. The first objective of this work was to develop pathways to synthesize ZSM-5 crystals from kaolin clay or diatomaceous earth, two inexpensive natural sources of silica and alumina (Paper I). In the case of kaolin, a heat treatment was used in order to form amorphous metakaolinite. Subsequently, dealumination of the raw materials by acid leaching made it possible to reach appropriate Si/Al ratios and to reduce the amount of impurities. Finally, leached metakaolinite or diatomaceous earth was reacted with sodium hydroxide and NBA. After synthesis optimization, both sources of aluminosilicates were found to behave differently during the course of synthesis and to lead to slightly different reaction products. The final products exhibited Si/Al ratios in the range 10-20. The use of leached diatomaceous earth allowed to reach higher yield of ZSM-5 crystals within comparable synthesis times. However, low amounts of mordenite were inevitably formed as a by-product, which was related to the high calcium content of diatomaceous earth. Therefore, the rest of the thesis focused on the kaolin system. In order to study the growth mechanism of ZSM-5 from leached metakaolinite, a proper methodology to gain local compositional data by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) on aluminosilicates was developed (Paper II). Zeolite A was used as a model system that could be ion-exchanged with various elements. In order to evaluate the reliability of the measurements, inductively coupled plasma-sector field mass spectrometry (ICP-SFMS) and EDS were compared. The EDS method developed in this work resulted in molar ratios very close to theoretical values and was therefore found more reliable than ICP-SFMS. Therefore, the method developed for zeolite A was applied in the rest of the thesis work to study the formation and growth of ZSM-5 crystals. The second part of this work focused on the kaolin system in order to understand the nucleation and growth processes of the ZSM-5 crystals. This system was heterogeneous, due to the formation of a gel upon heating of the synthesis mixture. First, the internal structure of the gel was investigated (Paper III). Second, a kinetic study was performed and compared with microstructural observations (Paper IV). Finally, the mechanisms leading to Al-zoning and dendritical growth of the zeolite crystals were investigated (Paper V). The characterization of the intermediate phases during the different stages of the hydrothermal synthesis were analyzed by different analytical techniques, such as inductively coupled plasma-sector field mass spectrometry (ICP-SFMS), dynamic light scattering (DLS), extreme high resolution-scanning electron microscopy (XHR-SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), high resolution-transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and nitrogen gas adsorption. These investigations led to several important conclusions: 1) The walls of the gel were shown for the first time to be inhomogeneous and to possess a biphasic internal structure consisting of a mesoporous skeleton of aluminosilicate nanoparticles embedded in a silicate-rich soluble matrix of soft matter. 2) The kinetic study and microstructural evidences indicated that the early crystals were fully embedded inside the gel phase and that crystal growth was retarded, as the formation of the gel occurred simultaneously with the early growth of the crystals. Hence, nucleation and growth appeared to be solution mediated.  3) Finally, the Al zoning of the crystals was related to the biphasic internal structure of the gel, since the silicate-rich matrix was preferentially consumed first. 4) The dendrites present at the surface of the crystals during most of the growth process were shown to be caused by the presence of a web of nanoparticles, most likely originating from the mesoporous skeleton inside the gel. In the future, these findings are expected to lead to optimized synthesis pathways of catalysts with homogeneous properties and to contribute to the development of poor regions in Bolivia.

Although there is extensive theoretical and empirical literature discussing the impact of revenue sharing agreements on competitive balance in professional sports leagues, there has been little work done to improve the structure of current agreements which are designed to improve competitive balance. This paper focuses on the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the current revenue sharing agreements it has in place. This paper both evaluates franchises’ efforts in earning revenue sharing payments and offers alternative metrics designed to accomplish the goals of league-wide profitability and competitive balance

Ramniceanu, Andrei. "Correlation of corrosion measurements and bridge conditions with NBIS deck rating." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/35642.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the use of epoxy coated steel has become mandatory starting in the 1980s, recent studies have shown that epoxy coating does not prevent corrosion, but instead will debond from the steel reinforcement in as little as 4 years (Weyers RE et al, 1998) allowing instead a much more insidious form of corrosion to take place known as crevice corrosion. Therefore, it is important to determine if the nondestructive corrosion activity detection methods are applicable to ECR as well as institute guidelines for interpreting the results. Since the corrosion of reinforcing steel is directly responsible for damage to concrete structures, it is surprising that nondestructive corrosion assessment methods are not part of regular bridge inspection programs such as PONTIS and NBIS. Instead, the inspection and bridge rating guidelines of federally mandated programs such as NBIS are so vague as to allow for a relatively subjective application by the field inspectors.

Clear cover depths, resistance, corrosion potentials, linear polarization data, as well as environmental exposure and structural data were collected from a sample of 38 bridge decks in the Commonwealth of Virginia. These structures were further divided in three subsets: bridge decks with a specified w/c ratio of 0.47, bridge decks with a specified w/c ratio of 0.45 and bridge decks with a specified w/cm ratio of 0.45. This data was then correlated to determine which parameters are the most influential in the assignment of NBIS condition rating. Relationships between the non-destructive test parameters were also examined to determine if corrosion potentials and linear polarization are applicable to epoxy coated steel.

Based on comparisons of measurements distributions, there is an indication that corrosion potential tests may be applicable to structures reinforced with epoxy coated steel. Furthermore, these conclusions are supported by statistical correlations between resistivity, half cell potentials and linear polarization measurements. Unfortunately, although apparently applicable, as of now there are no guidelines to interpret the results. Based on the linear corrosion current density data collected, no conclusion can be drawn regarding the applicability of the linear polarization test. As far as the NBIS deck rating is concerned, since the inspection guidelines are so vague, age becomes a very easy and attractive factor to the field personnel to rely on. However, this conclusion is far from definitive since the very large majority of structures used in this particular study had only two rating values out of theoretically ten and realistically five possible rating values./p>

Abstract:
Previous work found evidence that the racial composition of NBA teams was positively correlated with the racial composition of their metropolitan market areas during the 1990s. This paper finds continued evidence of this relationship in the 2000s, with an accompanying attendance boost from the incorporation of white players on teams located in whiter areas. There is also evidence that white players receive a salary premium relative to black players of equal performance quality. An examination of player performance indicates that demand for foreign players with the skill set of a forward or center is higher than demand for players of equal quality from the U.S. However, an analysis of salary discrimination related to foreign players produced no conclusive evidence.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates which factors that affect the salary for basketball players in the NBA and if the salary cap has achieved its purpose. The data for this project was collected from basketball-reference.com and consisted of performance measures from season 2015/2016 and salaries from the beginning of the season 2016/2017. The study was performed by using multiple linear regression analysis in the software R and the data was handled in Excel. The results from the regression indicates that position point guard, if the player has played in D-league or not,Age, Offensive rebounds, Assists, Steals, Two point attempts, Three point attempts, Free throw attempts, Field goal percentage, Usage percentage and Defensive rating are the main factors that affect the salary. The performance measures that had the greatest were two and three point attempts. The regression model achieved an explanatory level of 57:4%. In complementary to analyze if the salary cap has achieved its purpose, a literature analysis was used and showed that the salary cap systems in North America are neither accurately designed nor do they satisfy the intentions of what they were set to achieve.

Abstract:
Diploma thesis is entitled Monetary policy of NBS and convergence to EMU. Introductory theoretical section describes the development of monetary unions in the past and the causes of their extinction. Subsequently, it is devoted to the foundation of the European Monetary Union in various stages, of its crisis and transition to the ERM II exchange rate system. It characterizes the nominal Maastricht criteria in theory. Following chapters constitute the practical part of the thesis. Chapters 2-4 discuss the monetary policy of the NBS and its roles and objectives. They outline monetary policy of NBS in the individual periods followed by an evaluation of measures and compliance with the main objectives, such as exchange rate stability, inflation targeting and inflation targeting in ERM II. The last chapter discusses the costs and benefits of euro, their comparison and evaluation of the appropriateness of the timing of entry into EMU. Real convergence is emphasised and represented by GDP per capita, the adjustment of price levels, employment and foreign trade. Nominal convergence is represented by Maastricht convergence criteria and their implementation. The development of various criteria is compared with the countries of V4 -- Czech republic, Poland and Hungary. Finally it summarises the overall functioning of the National Bank in the field of monetary policy, the appreciation of the euro advantages and appropriateness of the timing.

Abstract:
This paper deals with the question whether the structure of the labor market in NBA is monopson or not. On the data from the NBA season 2011/12 I estimate player's marginal productivity using two stages least square model. In the first step I determine winner-loss ratio based on players' performance statistics. In the second step I use the results from the first model to predict team's revenues. This effect is controlled by other economic and social variables. Based on this model's results I determined that even though this market is not perfectly competitive, the results are not strong enough for monopson. Short player market could be described as winner-take-all market while on the market for centers there is a balance between pivots and owners and players can obtain their salary equal to their productivity. Then I discovered the superstar effect, according to which stars get bonuses to their salary against the rest of players. Finally it was found out that rookie contracts decrease players' rewards. On the market for centers the life cycle hypothesis holds.

LUCCHITTA, BENEDETTA. "INTEGRATION OF NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS IN URBAN AREAS: EXPLORING EMERGING APPROACHES." Doctoral thesis, Università IUAV di Venezia, 2022. http://hdl.handle.net/11578/319196.

Full text
Abstract:
Nature-based Solutions (NBS) have assumed an increasingly important role in urban planning. Given their relevant potential in enhancing natural capital at different scales and in providing several Ecosystem Services (ES), they are particularly relevant for climate adaptation and mitigation. By definition, they are multifunctional, as they are assumed to provide at the same time multiple benefits on environmental, social, and economic domains. Despite the increasing fame of NBS, cities are still facing some difficulties in the identification of policies for the implementation of such solutions. Since cities include a complex set of stakeholders, it is necessary to identify flexible schemes that allow engaging them in light of their social, economic, and cultural diversity. Another relevant challenge consists in the assessment and economic valuation of the benefits generated by NBS at the urban scale. An overall and integrated assessment of all the impacts generated by NBS is necessary to fully compute the benefits related to the environmental, economic, and above all social dimensions. The NBS impact assessment is a prerequisite for the definition of policies capable of implementing NBS at the urban scale. This research seeks to analyze and assess methodologies and policy instruments to foster the NBS implementation and management at the urban scale. Such a task requires integrating knowledge from different disciplines (urban planning, natural sciences, economic and social sciences) to include all the elements and the scales involved in NBS planning. The aim is to identify the main drivers for the implementation of NBS, taking into consideration how these infrastructures impact on the social and public value of ES in cities. For this purpose, the thesis investigates i) the assessment methodologies to measure the impacts generated by ES provided by NBS; ii) the approaches to valuate these impacts considering the social, economic, and environmental dimensions and, iii) the instruments that can be adopted to foster the implementation of NBS with a particular focus on Payment for Ecosystem Services schemes (PES).

Gamble, Rex Surachat. "Evaluating Streambank Retreat Prediction Using the BANCS Model in the Valley and Ridge Physiographic Province." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/103819.

Full text
Abstract:
Excess sediment in streams is harmful to the environment, economy, and human health. Streambanks account for an estimated 7-92% of sediment and 6-93% of total-phosphorus loads to streams depending on the watershed. Stream stabilization through stream restoration has become a common practice to satisfy the 2010 Chesapeake Bay total maximum daily load (TMDL) due its value in credits received per dollar spent. Bank erosion is most commonly credited through the Bank Assessment for Non-point source Consequences of Sediment (BANCS) framework, an empirically-derived model that predicts bankfull bank erosion rates using Bank Erodibility Hazard Index (BEHI), an indicator of bank stability, and Near-Bank Stress (NBS), an indicator of applied flow energy at bankfull discharge. This study assessed the BANCS framework in the Valley and Ridge physiographic province where it has not previously been applied. The spatial and temporal variability of erosion data was assessed to determine the impact of different erosion measurement schemes on bank erosion estimates and BANCS curves, and alternate NBS methods that capture flow energy beyond bankfull were applied. Three years of monthly erosion data on 64 streambanks were used to assess the spatial and temporal variability of erosion measurements and subsequently develop the erosion curves. Predicted erosion rates were then compared to measured erosion rates on three banks in the Valley and Ridge of Southwest Virginia. Analysis of spatial variability suggests bank retreat measurements should be made every three channel widths to reliably quantify reach-scale load estimates. Furthermore, a minimum monitoring period of 12 months is recommended to ensure seasonal patterns in bank retreat are captured. These results also bring into question the efficacy of the BANCS model as a crediting tool, as the developed statistical relationships between erosion rates, BEHI, and multiple NBS methods were not statistically significant. The limited number of significant curves had low r2 values (r2 < 0.1) indicating measures of NBS and BEHI do not adequately explain the natural variability of bank retreat in the Valley and Ridge of Southwest Virginia.
Master of Science
While sediment naturally occurs in streams, too much sediment in these systems is harmful to the environment, economy, and human health. Streambanks contribute an estimated 7-92% of sediment pollution into streams. Stabilizing streambanks with stream restoration has become a common practice to reduce sediment for the 2010 Chesapeake Bay pollutant diet. The sediment reduction of bank stabilization is most commonly estimated with the Bank Assessment for Non-point source Consequences of Sediment (BANCS) framework, a model that predicts bank erosion rates using Bank Erodibility Hazard Index (BEHI), an indicator of bank stability, and Near-Bank Stress (NBS), an indicator of flow energy when the stream channel is full of water. This study assessed the BANCS framework in the Southwest (SW) Virginia where it has not previously been applied. In this process, the variability of the erosion data in space and time was assessed to determine the impact of different erosion measurement methodologies on bank erosion estimates and BANCS equations. Additionally, alternate NBS methods that represent flow energy below, at, and above the channel being full were tested. Three years of erosion data on 64 streambanks were used to assess the variability of erosion measurements in space and time and create new BANCS erosion equations. Predicted erosion rates using the new erosion equations were then compared to measured erosion rates on three banks in the area. Analysis of variability in space suggests bank retreat measurements should be made every three channel widths to reliably estimate erosion volume along a length of stream. Furthermore, a minimum measuring period of 12 months is recommended to ensure seasonal differences in bank retreat are captured. The results also bring into question the effectiveness of the BANCS model as a tool to estimate sediment reduction for the Chesapeake Bay pollutant diet, as the developed equations between erosion rates, BEHI, and multiple NBS methods were not significant. The limited number of significant curves had low r2 values (r2 < 0.1) indicating the measures of NBS and BEHI do not explain the natural variability of bank retreat in the study area.

Abstract:
In this paper, I examine trends in salary inequality from the 1985-86 NBA season to the 2015-16 NBA season. Income and wealth inequality have been extremely important issues recently, which motivated me to analyze inequality in the NBA. I investigated if salary inequality trends in the NBA can be explained by either returns to skill or widening skill distributions. I used Pareto exponents to measure inequality levels and tested to see if the levels changed over the sample. Then, I estimated league-wide returns to skill. I found that returns to skill have not significantly changed, but variance in skill has increased. This result explained some of the variation in salary distributions. This could potentially influence future Collective Bargaining Agreements insofar as it provides an explanation for widening NBA salary distributions as opposed to a judgment whether greater levels of inequality is either good or bad for the NBA.

Abstract:
The pharmacokinetics, oral bioavailability, cerebrovascular permeability and biotransformation of the neurotoxic plasticiser n-butylbenzenesulfonamide (NBBS) were studied in order that the human health risk due to environmental exposure to NBBS could be evaluated. The pharmacokinetics of NBBS was determined in Wistar rats, following intravenous administration of the isotopomer [13C6] NBBS (1 mg/kg in 0.9% saline). [13C6] NBBS is cleared from plasma at a rate of 5 ml/min by the liver. The plasticiser has a short distribution phase (t1/2 of 47 seconds) and a long terminal phase (t1/2 of 17 hours). Plasma [13C6] NBBS concentrations, 24 hours after administration, represented 0.04% of the administered dose. These data indicated rapid uptake into tissue, which was subsequently confirmed by monitoring tissue concentrations of [13C6] NBBS for upto 8 hours following administration. [13C6] NBBS was not accumulated by any of the tissues studied (brain, liver, kidney, muscle and adipose tissue). Oral bioavailability was determined by simultaneously administering native NBBS orally and [13C6] NBBS intravenously to Wistar rats. The plasticiser was found to be absorbed erratically and subject to first pass metabolism. Plasma concentrations of orally administered NBBS fluctuated over the duration of the experiment. Furthermore, limitations posed by the assay resulted in truncated oral curves. These factors precluded estimation of areas under the oral NBBS curves to infinity and partial area ratios were instead used to calculate absolute bioavailability (mean of 19%). Cerebrovascular permeability of NBBS was determined with [13C6] NBBS, in Sprague-Dawley rats, using the in-situ brain perfusion technique of Takasato et al. (1984). The uptake of [13C6] NBBS into brain was very rapid and flow limited. Assuming an average cerebral perfusion fluid flow rate of 0.11 ml/s/g, the calculated single pass extraction value for [13C6] NBBS is 99.9% with a Kin of 0.11 ml/s/g. This is in close agreement with experimental values for the 15 second saline perfusions (extraction = 98% - 125% and Kin = 0.108 - 0.137). Differences in regional brain distribution of the plasticiser were not found. In-vitro biotransformation studies revealed one phase I metabolite in incubates of NBBS containing human, rabbit and rat post-mitochondrial supernatant (S9 fraction). This metabolite is 2-hydroxy-n-butylbenzenesulfonamide (NBBS-OH hydroxylated in the Based on these data, environmental exposure to NBBS does not pose a significant human health risk.

Abstract:
In the modern society it is well known that an individual’s background matters in his career, but should it be taken into consideration in a recruiting process in general and a recruiting process of NBA-players in particular? Previous research shows that white basketball players from high-income families have a 75% higher chance of becoming an NBA player compared to a white basketball player from a low-income family. In this paper, we have examined whether there is a connection between NBA-player background and the chances of succeeding in the NBA given that the player has been picked in the NBA-draft. The results have been carried out using machine learning algorithms based on Gaussian Processes. The results show that draft decisions will not be improved by taking socio-economic background into consideration.

Abstract:
The National Basketball Association (NBA) generated well over $4 billion in revenues during the 2014-15 season. I analyze the value of a win to a team in terms of revenue and examine the potential underpayment or overpayment of players and superstars throughout the league relative to their marginal revenue product (MRP). My findings suggest that players are overpaid, especially superstars. However, it is important to consider the fixed-revenue streams a team receives before assuming a player is simply overpaid compared to his MRP. In congruence with previous literature, I find that veterans are overpaid at the expense of younger players’ lower salaries. I also look at the drivers of a player’s salary and find that general managers tend to overpay for points relative to other statistics.

Microwave-assisted with diluted acids is an alternative to sample preparation of organic samples owing inorganic elements solubilization for spectroscopic techniques determination. The efficiency of this procedure depends on the sample?s original characteristics. In this way, the decomposition efficiency was evaluated considering the sample?s original characteristics and the final products presents in the solution after decomposition. Grains of soybean and samples of forage, bovine blood, and bovine viscera were digested in cavity-microwave oven using oxidants mixtures in different acid concentrations. The decomposition efficiency was evaluated from residual organic carbon determination and mineral recovery by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. The original sample characterization was performed from crude protein amount, fatty, and original carbon. In order to identify the main remaining organic compounds, the residual solutions were firstly characterized by spectroscopy technique (1H NMR), with the identification of typical nitro-, aliphatic- and aromatic- compounds. Studies concerning separation of nitrobenzoic acids isomers were performed by HPLC-UV, by using reversal phase chromatography with C18 as stationary phase and H2O:acetonitrile:methanol (75:20:5) + 0.05% TFA as mobile phase. The use of diluted acids proved to be useful and recommended alternative, reducing the reagents volume and consequently the variability of the residues provided by the decomposition process. Comparing the digested solutions with the original sample composition, biological matrix with structural amino acids, proteins and lipids produced nitrobenzoic acid isomers and other organic compounds provided from the cleavage in chemical bonds.

Numerous attempt have been made by the league to spread the game of basketball into such areas as Europe, South America, and East Asia. As popularity for the sport grew, so did the potential for NBA teams to draft foreign talent. Indeed, the 1990’s and 2000’s saw an influx of foreign talent into the NBA. By the 2014-2015 season, there were a record 101 foreign players on opening day rosters, nearly five times as many as during the 1990-1991 season (21 players). This papers examines whether discrimination of foreign players exist via two value outcomes: salary and minutes per game. Based on an analysis of performance metrics, this paper found significant nationality effects on minutes per game, specifically that foreign players receive less playing time for commensurate performance. This paper did not find evidence to suggest salary or minute per game discrimination by race.

Abstract:

Basketball is a unique sport in which the use of space and time is greatly important for a team’s success. Furthermore, the National Basketball Association (NBA) is undergoing drastic change in terms of the way teams approach spatial issues as well as the spatio-temporal technologies and analytics. Given these facts, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provide the opportunity to develop new analytic and visual methodologies to perform spatial analysis for team performances and meet the league’s changing needs. This project thus develops new approaches, methods, and toolsets using GIS to demonstrate its efficacy and potential for professional application in the NBA. The first application uses GIS to adapt Relative Motion analysis techniques to an existing play, seeking to represent the average motion characteristics entailed therein. The other application uses a tool developed to map, glean spatial statistics, and model the use and importance of floor spacing for teams in the NBA.

Abstract:
This paper explores the value of attending college to Division I National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball players in terms of future success in the NBA. Future success is measured by both salary and minutes played per game. A dataset of 660 athletes from the 2006 through 2016 drafts was collected from Basketball-Reference. An empirical model is estimated using this data in order to identify the determinant factors in a player’s success in the NBA. It is found that college is not a determinant of success in the NBA.

The economic and social advances of the 2000´s, placed Brazil in a prominent position on the crisis scenario installed in developed countries. This prestige was reflected in the right to host the two largest sporting events in the world, FIFA World Cup Soccer and the Olympics. Major sports and entertainment international organizations seized the moment to open market in Brazil, the NBA, the most globalized sports league in the world, took the time to open in 2012 in Rio de Janeiro, the NBA Brazil, first league office in South America. The NBA 's internationalization process in Brazil becomes an interesting factor to be studied, since all search for international markets bring many risks and the political and economic unpredictability that Brazil suffers since 2014 added to cultural factors linked to the sports organization justifies this project. Through this context, it was defined as a general objective to evaluate the risks of the NBA internationalization process in Brazil in 2012-2015 and 2020 periods. Therefore, an extensive literature review and consultation with four experts was held to raise what are the relevant dimensions and variables for evaluation of NBA¿s risk of internationalization in Brazil, they are: Uncertainty (ten variables) and Commitment (ten variables). Weights and notes were assigned to these variables in the two periods studied allowing the formatting of NBA¿s Risk Assessment Index (IARnba), as a product of this work. In addition, the study allowed an analysis of NBA¿s Internationalization Process in Brazil from its opening (2012-2015) and five years ahead (2020) which showed that in the period studied there possibly a decrease in NBA risk of internationalization in Brazil, generating a deepening and strengthening of relations with the business market and a consequently reduction of uncertainty. Owan, Lucas M. "The Effects of Recessions and Market Sizes on NBA Player Salary." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2017. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/1491.

Abstract:
Some teams in the National Basketball Association experienced revenue declines during the Great Recession. Previous literature has found that teams in larger markets are able to generate more revenue due to higher populations. The recession left small-market teams suffering financially. I analyze a player based on his performance and examine if market size and recessions appreciate or depreciate a player’s salary. Further, I investigate if the competitive imbalance between big-market and small-market teams expanded due to the recession. My results suggest recessions do not have an impact on player salary, however player salary decreased by a small margin in post-recession years. The 2008 Great Recession did not enhance the competitive imbalance among teams. The NBA did an effective job accounting for decreasing team revenues during the recession and confirming all teams could spend amounts at or near the salary cap.
