Benabdallah, Abdelwahab. "La nawba algéroise : de l'analyse à la classification." Thesis, Paris 4, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PA040234.

Full text
Abstract:
The nawba is vocal and instrumental macroform reference of the musical heritage called "Arabo-Andalou" of the Maghreb countries. Within this vast repertoire, the algiers nawba transmitted in the algiers school deserves special study. The work of this thesis therefore focuses on the repertoire of algiers nawba and specifically on the vocal parts, classified in 16 modes/nawbât and in five movements is: mṣaddar, bṭayḥi, darj, inṣiraf and ḫlaṣ. The nawba is a suite of vocal and instrumental pieces that keep coming in an established order in the ṭab’ (mode) and mîzân (rhythm), which are important criteria for the classification of parts. Our analysis will be based essentially on the ṭab’ to understand how the sixteen modes of nawba in algiers and how to differentiate in order to define the characteristics of each voice piece of nawba. The analytical work will begin with a preliminary analysis to accurately characterize the sixteen algiers modes and identify anomalies. A second level of analysis will consider the items identified in order to clarify the classification. Finally we propose in the Annex, the full transcripts of the corpus as a diwan or melodic collection, from the melodic scientific classification

Horsey, Glynis A. "An introduction to the written works of Nawal al-Sa'dawi." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 1988. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/29313/.

Full text
Abstract:
Nawal al-Sa'dawi is an Egyptian doctor and feminist writer whose sociological works have had a great impact on her society and the Arab world. This thesis sets out to trace how Sa'dawi's work as a doctor during the 1960s brought her into such close contact with the sufferings of women and girls in her society, that she set out to try and discover the reasons for such widespread oppression of her own sex. Each of Sa'dawi's factual works is treated separately here in chronological order. These works show Sa'dawi protesting against sexual and social abuses of women, against female circumcision and double standards of morality in her society. When she tries to expose the root causes of Arab women's oppression, she points the finger of blame at patriarchal society, economic pressures and misguided interpretations of psychology and religion. Sa'dawi is prevented from speaking out frankly against political or religious institutions because of the threat of censorship which carries with it the danger of imprisonment and persecution. Apart from a critical examination of her factual books, this thesis also contains a survey of her fictional works, for Sa'dawi has also achieved success in the field of literature with her short stories and novels. Her fiction frequently brings to the reader typical dilemmas facing women in Egyptian society. Again each work is discussed individually here. Since Sa'dawi is still very active as a writer, I have had to confine my thesis to covering her output up to 1986, which means that nineteen works are discussed in detail. The tremendous popularity of Sa'dawi and her written works rests largely on her commitment to helping her compatriots achieve balanced healthy lives from the psychological, physical and sexual dimensions, through frank discussions of highly controversial subjects. During the 1980s, Sa'dawi's fame has spread to the West where she is rightly regarded as the leading spokeswoman for Arab feminism.

Ammari, Deema Nabil. "Cross-cultural exchanges : Nawal El Saadawi and feminism in the Arab world." Thesis, Oxford Brookes University, 2007. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.490518.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to consider how Nawal El Saadawi's literary work can be examined on a theoretical level and to locate a possible theoretical framework, in her feminist texts, through which to explore the subjective identity of Arab women and the authenticity and creativity of their discourses. As it is Saadawi's literary output t~at lies at the heart of this research, this thesis begins, after establishing the theoretical framework and terminology that will be employed, with a very necessary situating of her activist and feminist literature within the context of Arabic feminist writing within the male-dominated Arabic literary tradition. The role of Arab women's creative writing in consciousness-raising, the debates around Arab female identity and subjectivity and women's awareness ofthe cultural and political dilemmas oftheir time are all drawn into the discussion. The thesis goes on to present a psychoanalytical approach to Saadawi's feminist literature as a part ofthe study of colonial relations. As I argue, the concept of colonial relations between the colonizer and the native Other can be translated into, and therefore help understand, the dynamics of gender relations within the patriarchal domination of the female Other in the Arab world. This thesis explores Saadawi's fiction and non-fiction work between 1983 and 2002, which present the Arab woman as doubly traumatized by her struggle against foreign domination and a patriarchally hierarchized system. The texts will be used to explore Arab women's oppression and struggle for freedom, and to consider Saadawi's examination of the psychological and physical imprisonment she was subjected to. The thesis culminates in an examination of the writing of the female body and of women's perception of their sexuality through creativity and imagination,a creativity and imagination which is crucial, as Saadawi's work shows, for Arab women's transcendence of gendered hierarchy. Saadawi's novel The Circling Song will be explored through a framework of (Western) poststructuralist theory, with a specific focus on Helene Cixous' concept of feminine writing, revealing the relevance and importance of such ideas for the novel. Ultimately then, what this thesis proposes is a new way of reading Saadawi's work, one which I consider an example of Arab women's struggle to achieve and locate a subjectivity in the Arab as well as the Western worlds. It draws on Western theory, not to colonise or suppress the difference.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to review the positions of women in Islam in light of the primary sources of faith, The Quran and Prophet Muhammads Sunnah, and hence, contributes to a better understanding of the highly stereotyped and Westernized image of Muslim woman as exemplified in the literary work of the Egyptian writer, Nawal Al Saadawi. The thesis focuses on how Nawal Al Saadawi, through her novel Woman at Point Zero, believes, as the Western world, feminists and readers do, that Islam has degraded the social status of women. She enforces the image of Muslim women as an oppressed, silent, victim of her religion. In doing so, she collaborates with the West and its image of the inferior status of Muslim/Arab women and the violence of patriarchal Muslim societies, strengthens the colonial, orientalist discourse and thus ends up being perceived in the Muslim and Arab societies as an agent of Westernization.

Abstract:
While much attention has been given to the abolition of interest in Islamic economics, there has been little attention given to the ethical framework on which it is based. Syed Nawab Haider Naqvi in Islam, Economics and Society (1994), presents an axiomatic approach to generating an Islamic economic theory from the ground up. Chapter one considers Naqvi's argument for a distinct Islamic economic system. Chapter two examines Naqvi's theoretical framework and the Islamic economic system which he derives from it. The chapter compares Naqvi's approach with that of M. Umer Chapra, who also adopts an ethical framework for the foundation of an Islamic economic theory. Chapter three examines the debate surrounding the definition of riba and the importance of riba in Islamic economics. This study concludes with a recommendation for a more systematic approach in interpreting the Qur'an, which is the source of Naqvi's economic axioms.

Paris, EPHE, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014EPHE5002.

Full text
Abstract:
The importance and uniqueness of the ritual roles out by the impersonator of the deceased Nawda (North Togo) invites us to re-examine the notions of griel and of becoming an ancestor, from the perspective of this actor. Following in the footsteps of the impersonator of a deceased male - who will in turn be mimicked or mimed by a female actress - allows those present to, at the same time, observe the intertwining of the destinies of a male and female Nawda, submerge in the sameinstitution : that of matrimony. Within the time frame and the particular scenes of conjuring up the ancestors, as enacted by the performer, the participants in the grieving process can observe a veritable meltingof boundaries and of identities (that is, between man and woman: between the living and the dead; friends and family) leading to their dissolution and the transcendance of them. The attentive observation of the nuances of the impersonations (of wich we are engaged in the discovering the symbolic logic) leads us rethink a number of the classic questions of Anthropology, such as: the disctinction between sexes ; the realm of the ancestors and of the individual ; the relation between ritual an theatre ; plus the questions of the significance of the body and the space around it : and from a broader perspective, the links with the surrounding territories. The manuscript is accompanied by an assemblage of film material

Alqahtani, Norah Hassan. "Muslim feminisms and fictions in a postcolonial frame : case studies of Nawal El Saadawi and Leila Aboulela." Thesis, University of Kent, 2017. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/67676/.

Full text
Abstract:
The postcolonial condition has had life-shaping effects on millions of individuals, in the Third World in particular. This study focuses on the different positions embraced by two authors recognized as 'Muslim feminists.' I explore how they engage with postcolonial subjects and particularly address women's questions in their contemporary societies, through analyses of such 'Muslim fictions' as Woman at Point Zero, The Fall of the Imam, and Zeina by Nawal El Saadawi and The Translator, Minaret, and Lyrics Alley by Leila Aboulela. Because a feminist movement is not autonomous, but bound to its sociopolitical context, the rise as well as the failure of secular political and social movements in Egypt have had an impact on feminist struggles. El Saadawi starts her independent secular feminism and inscribes her female characters as revolutionary subjects who rebel against Islamic patriarchal law. Using Caroline Rooney's concept of 'revolutionary spirit' and Linda Alcoff's positionality, this study demonstrates how El Saadawi enables her female characters to counter the brutality of Arab women's lives through different strategies, even hostile ones. Moreover, El Saadawi is as much a nationalist writer as she is a feminist one, so this study illustrates how the tale of the country has been interwoven with the private lives of women, in alignment with Fredric Jameson's paradigm. Whatever the limitations of El Saadawi's secular feminism have been, however, it is undeniable that her version of secular feminism prepared the ground for the new emergent movement that is Islamic feminism. This study examines Aboulela's novels as a comparative paradigm with El Saadawi's. From a committed Muslim point of view, Aboulela inscribes Islamic faith extensively in her writings. Her work offers a potentially universalizing, although not universal, rallying point; it offers a chance for women to create an Islamic spiritual site of belonging and possible solidarity that transcends social classes, ethnic differences and geographical boundaries. However, Aboulela`s work for emancipation is confined to a spiritual level and seems to be less radical in the feminist focus regarding women's rights.

Erfort, Paulene. "Introspection, female consciousness and the quiet revolution in the novels of Nawal El Saadawi and Mariama Bâ." Thesis, University of the Western Cape, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/3996.

Full text
Abstract:
Magister Artium - MA
This thesis considers introspection and female consciousness in the novels Woman At Point Zero and Two Women In One by Nawal El Saadawi, an Egyptian writer and So Long A Letter and Scarlet Song by Mariama Bâ, a Senegalese writer. This study looks at how narrative technique impacts on questions of self and identity, subjective experience, coherence and transformation. The form of the novel is also highly significant because it shows the connection between form, individualism and consciousness of experience and this is important in understanding these questions of self and identity, subjective experience, coherence and transformation. It allows insight into the internal workings of the individual. The form of the novel is therefore particularly relevant because of the focus on the individual, subject and the consciousness of the individual. Pertinent to the discussion in this thesis is how narrative provides a creative space to enable the reflexive process and also how narrative contributes to the construction and understanding of the self and identity. The dynamic between narratology and novel form, on the one hand, the modes of confession and letter writing, on the other are considered both of which use first person narration.Confession as a genre of personal narrative enables the subject to move inward as part of the self reflection process which allows knowledge of the self. Letter writing a form of personal narrative plays an important role in the exploration of the self and identity. The novel in letter form forces the introspective process through the act of writing and the character reaches a realisation about events and experiences which have shaped her present consciousness. By contrast third person narration in Scarlet Song and Two Women In One foregrounds the social context which shapes the characters‟ sense of self and identity and worldview. The narrative which is rebellious and resistant in form, although quietly so, enables a “revolution” in the character‟s self- and world view.

Abstract:

Sazzad, R. "Edward Said's 'exile' reflected in the works of Naguib Mahfouz, Mahmoud Darwish, Leila Ahmed, Nawal El Saadawi and Youssef Chahine." Thesis, Nottingham Trent University, 2013. http://irep.ntu.ac.uk/id/eprint/293/.

Full text
Abstract:
Following Edward Said, my argument is that spatial exile, despite its distress and deprivations, generates a different way of looking at the world. Since intellectuals should look at the world differently, Said insists on their transcending the existential sufferings of losing home and urges them to cultivate what George Lamming famously calls ‘the pleasures of exile’. Thus, Said turns exile into a metaphorical concept and a model of intellectual practice in order to question the familiar and the known. In effect, Saidian intellectuals do not necessarily have to be dispossessed of their homeland. Rather, they have to be figuratively exiled from it by placing themselves at a certain distance from the familiar cultural system(s), and viewing them through the lens of the ‘other’ in order to broaden their perspective on them. To establish this, I first demonstrated that exilic conditions could be intellectually empowering, and outlined the properties of Saidian intellectual practice by showing how Mahfouz, Darwish, Saadawi, Ahmed, and Chahine also uphold its principles. I analysed how the convergences and divergences of their thoughts create diverse resistances, and discussed if writing is the abode where their pluralistic minds reside. I then ascertained the discursive intersections among Said’s ‘exile’ and postcolonialism and postmodernism by exhibiting the ‘exilic’ transcendence of some of the limitations existing there. Thus, my writing formed an in-depth analysis of Said’s ‘exile’ in order to project this as a significant intellectual vocation. At the same time, I presented some of the most prominent Middle Eastern and Arab-American intellectual(s) in a new light by highlighting the humanistic strength of their writings and creations. Thus, I formulate an enhanced understanding of freedom and identity contained in the ‘exile’ through cultural, political and theoretical arguments.

Ouattara, Oumar. "Diffusion de l'hévéaculture et sécurité alimentaire en Côte d'Ivoire : Approche dans les régions de l'Indénité-Djuablin et de la Nawa." Thesis, Nantes, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019NANT2019.

Full text
Abstract:
In Côte d’Ivoire, since the middle of the 1980s, the traditional plantation (coffee, cocoa, oil palm) economy goes through multifaceted crises with deteriorating consequences of the living conditions of agricultural households. The population massively adopts among other adaptive strategies, the rubber tree cultivation. Contrary to its expansion, the food situation in the country reveals signs of degradation as attested by the food riots of 2008. In the light of the innovation diffusion theory, this thesis interrogates the effects of the development of the rubber tree cultivation on the diet of the population according to an approach in line with food security in Indénié-Djuablin and Nawa regions. The study of spacial dynamics shows that this culture constitutes a constraint to food availability owing to the monopolization of spaces traditionally allocated to annual crops. Its diffusion however remains beneficial in terms of food security. The income generated permits a great number of growers to rise above the poverty threshold and contributes positively to the economic accessibility of food on the market. Hence rubber tree cultivation households are able to diversify and enrich their food regime. In parallel, due to the income regularity from natural rubber, their feeding gains in stability both quantitatively and qualitatively. These evolutions however raise questions of their durability due to the erratic nature of the price of natural rubber

Elayan, Suzanne. "Changing seasons : examining three decades of women's writing in Greater Syria and Egypt." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2012. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/12423.

Abstract:
Throughout the last three decades, the Arab region has attracted the unwanted attention of the rest of the world because of its spiralling political upheaval. This unrest has caused migration, economic and cultural changes, and eventually a spring of revolutions and protests in demand of reform. Arab countries are now in the spotlight of global current affairs, and all the imperfections regarding their cultural, social, and gender inequalities have surfaced to the foreground. Arab women novelists have been addressing feminist issues for centuries, chipping away at the stereotypical image of the meek and voiceless Arab woman that comes hand in hand with Orientalism. Through their fiction, writers such as Nawal El Saadawi, Hanan Al- Shaykh and Fadia Faqir have promulgated a bold brand of Arab feminist thought. This interdisciplinary thesis explores the Greater Syrian and Egyptian woman's novel written between 1975 and 2007. Through the in-depth analysis of Arab women's novels available in English, I attempt to uncover the many reasons behind today's gender inequality in Greater Syria and Egypt. By examining contemporary Arabic narrative styles and cultivating traditional Arab story-telling methods, the creative element of this thesis uses fiction to expose social and political injustice. The novel within this thesis challenges different forms of patriarchy that are dominant in the region, and endeavours to document a historical, on-going revolution.
