Abstract:
AbstractThis article presents some of the authors' perspectives on the past 20 years of work that applies the results of research in historical linguistics to the understanding of the histories and cultural practices of pre-Columbian Mesoamericans. It focuses on major cultural transformations to which both historical linguistic and archaeological data can contribute, such as the spread of agriculture, and migrations in Mesoamerican prehistory. It also addresses major culture-historical studies on narrower topics: on Nawa and its place in the prehistory of Mexico, in particular confirming standard views that Nawas were immigrants into Mesoamerica; on Archaic and Formative period interactions involving Oto-Mangeans, which is work that is largely still to be done; on the prospects for work on long-distance contacts between Mesoamerica and North America; on the contributions of historical linguistics in Mesoamerican epigraphy; and on the value and prospects of updating the methodology of glottochronology.

Abstract:
The tales of Abu Nawas, which originated in Arab-Persia are popular humorous stories told in the Malay world. Several written sources reveal that these tales spread to the Malay world between the 13th and 15th centuries, through the books One Thousand and One Nights and Hikayat Abu Nawas . Drawing from field trips conducted in a number of places in Sabah, a total of 13 tales, that had been transmitted orally among Sabah indigenous informants, have been collected. Upon comparison with Hikayat Abu Nawas , it was found that some of the Sabah folk version of Abu Nawas tales are similar to those published in Hikayat Abu Nawas while some are very different. This study attempts to compare the motifs of the original Abu Nawas tales with those of the Sabah folk version based on the principles of intertextuality. The intertextual comparison shows that early on, the indigenous people of Sabah had been exposed to the Abu Nawas stories. Later however, the stories were retold based on local elements. In the end, the indigenous storytellers of Sabah began to create their own version with motifs different from that of the original tales. These retold stories are rich in local color and motifs, highlighting the genius and creativity of local Sabah storytellers.

Abstract:
I offer an interpretation of the Stoic “peculiar qualification” (ἰδία ποιότης) which provides for the identity of individuals over time and the distinguishability of discrete individuals. This interpretation is similar to but not the same as one of the strands in Lewis’s interpretation as presented by Nawar. I suggest that the “peculiar qualification”—what makes the individual be the individual—is the particular ἕξις or φύσις or ψυχή that is in an individual. That is, the peculiar quality is not the kind of πνεῦμα an entity has, nor some further qualification or disposition of the kind of πνεῦμα that it has, such as acquired characteristics of the tenor or nature or soul in its particular lived history, but simply the discrete soul or nature or tenor, extended in its own particular spatial location. The so-called peculiar quality is that portion of πνεῦμα that is proper to that individual.

Benabdallah, Abdelwahab. Thesis, Paris 4, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PA040234.

Full text
Abstract:
The nawba is vocal and instrumental macroform reference of the musical heritage called "Arabo-Andalou" of the Maghreb countries. Within this vast repertoire, the algiers nawba transmitted in the algiers school deserves special study. The work of this thesis therefore focuses on the repertoire of algiers nawba and specifically on the vocal parts, classified in 16 modes/nawbât and in five movements is: mṣaddar, bṭayḥi, darj, inṣiraf and ḫlaṣ. The nawba is a suite of vocal and instrumental pieces that keep coming in an established order in the ṭab’ (mode) and mîzân (rhythm), which are important criteria for the classification of parts. Our analysis will be based essentially on the ṭab’ to understand how the sixteen modes of nawba in algiers and how to differentiate in order to define the characteristics of each voice piece of nawba. The analytical work will begin with a preliminary analysis to accurately characterize the sixteen algiers modes and identify anomalies. A second level of analysis will consider the items identified in order to clarify the classification. Finally we propose in the Annex, the full transcripts of the corpus as a diwan or melodic collection, from the melodic scientific classification

Horsey, Glynis A. "An introduction to the written works of Nawal al-Sa'dawi." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 1988. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/29313/.

Full text
Abstract:
Nawal al-Sa'dawi is an Egyptian doctor and feminist writer whose sociological works have had a great impact on her society and the Arab world. This thesis sets out to trace how Sa'dawi's work as a doctor during the 1960s brought her into such close contact with the sufferings of women and girls in her society, that she set out to try and discover the reasons for such widespread oppression of her own sex. Each of Sa'dawi's factual works is treated separately here in chronological order. These works show Sa'dawi protesting against sexual and social abuses of women, against female circumcision and double standards of morality in her society. When she tries to expose the root causes of Arab women's oppression, she points the finger of blame at patriarchal society, economic pressures and misguided interpretations of psychology and religion. Sa'dawi is prevented from speaking out frankly against political or religious institutions because of the threat of censorship which carries with it the danger of imprisonment and persecution. Apart from a critical examination of her factual books, this thesis also contains a survey of her fictional works, for Sa'dawi has also achieved success in the field of literature with her short stories and novels. Her fiction frequently brings to the reader typical dilemmas facing women in Egyptian society. Again each work is discussed individually here. Since Sa'dawi is still very active as a writer, I have had to confine my thesis to covering her output up to 1986, which means that nineteen works are discussed in detail. The tremendous popularity of Sa'dawi and her written works rests largely on her commitment to helping her compatriots achieve balanced healthy lives from the psychological, physical and sexual dimensions, through frank discussions of highly controversial subjects. During the 1980s, Sa'dawi's fame has spread to the West where she is rightly regarded as the leading spokeswoman for Arab feminism.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to consider how Nawal El Saadawi's literary work can be examined on a theoretical level and to locate a possible theoretical framework, in her feminist texts, through which to explore the subjective identity of Arab women and the authenticity and creativity of their discourses. As it is Saadawi's literary output t~at lies at the heart of this research, this thesis begins, after establishing the theoretical framework and terminology that will be employed, with a very necessary situating of her activist and feminist literature within the context of Arabic feminist writing within the male-dominated Arabic literary tradition. The role of Arab women's creative writing in consciousness-raising, the debates around Arab female identity and subjectivity and women's awareness ofthe cultural and political dilemmas oftheir time are all drawn into the discussion. The thesis goes on to present a psychoanalytical approach to Saadawi's feminist literature as a part ofthe study of colonial relations. As I argue, the concept of colonial relations between the colonizer and the native Other can be translated into, and therefore help understand, the dynamics of gender relations within the patriarchal domination of the female Other in the Arab world. This thesis explores Saadawi's fiction and non-fiction work between 1983 and 2002, which present the Arab woman as doubly traumatized by her struggle against foreign domination and a patriarchally hierarchized system. The texts will be used to explore Arab women's oppression and struggle for freedom, and to consider Saadawi's examination of the psychological and physical imprisonment she was subjected to. The thesis culminates in an examination of the writing of the female body and of women's perception of their sexuality through creativity and imagination,a creativity and imagination which is crucial, as Saadawi's work shows, for Arab women's transcendence of gendered hierarchy. Saadawi's novel The Circling Song will be explored through a framework of (Western) poststructuralist theory, with a specific focus on Helene Cixous' concept of feminine writing, revealing the relevance and importance of such ideas for the novel. Ultimately then, what this thesis proposes is a new way of reading Saadawi's work, one which I consider an example of Arab women's struggle to achieve and locate a subjectivity in the Arab as well as the Western worlds. It draws on Western theory, not to colonise or suppress the difference.

Abstract:
In application, ADS-33E-PRF provides the means to effectively predict rotorcraft handling qualities via validated criteria and demonstrate actual handling qualities in flight test using mission task elements (MTE). With decades of successful outcomes achieved by integrated industry and government test teams, international users, and researchers, this approach provides an effective means to evaluate handling qualities of advanced rotorcraft designs. The requirement for at least three test pilot evaluators of each MTE expands the flight hours required for test and hence increases costs. To reduce flight hours required, while maintaining process effectiveness, the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) is interested in better understanding the relationship between pilot workload and assigned handling qualities ratings such that predictive tools, if proven effective, can reduce this burden. To meet this challenge, Systems Technology, Inc. (STI), Charles River Analytics, Inc. (CRA), Mitchell Aerospace Research, and Advanced Brain Monitoring, Inc. joined with NAWCAD to explore through piloted simulation the relationship between physiological measures of pilot workload and assigned pilot ratings as experienced test pilots conducted handling qualities evaluations using three exemplar MTEs. This paper describes the piloted simulation study and summarizes initial results.

Artykuł dotyczy udziału Amerykanek w wysiłku wojennym Stanów Zjednoczonych podczas I wojny światowej w świetle poczytnego magazynu „The Ladies’ Home Journal”. W ramach National Council of Defense powołano oddzielną sekcję – Woman’s Committe (Komitet Kobiecy), którą kierowała Anna Howard Shaw, znana lekarka i zasłużona sufrażystka, honorowa przewodnicząca NAWSA. W artykułach i felietonach zachęcano do różnych form obywatelskiej i patriotycznej aktywności, m.in. poprzez akcję oszczędzania żywności (hooverize), prace charytatywne, zakładanie ogródków wojennych, pomoc farmerom w sezonie letnim, etc.

Abstract:
This article explores challenges in supporting Less-Commonly Taught Languages (LCTLs) both in and outside of traditional classroom settings. The focus here is on three case studies of Icelandic as a second and foreign language (L2), Irish as a second or additional language (L2/ IAL), and Nawat as an endangered language. The linguistic contexts of the featured languages may differ- but all three have common ground in being less digitally resourced. Common practices in Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) have shown that limited access to digital resources not only hampers development of CALL tools but also marginalizes pedagogical efforts in teaching and learning this language. In spite of this, CALL practitioners have shown resilience in adapting existing resources and developing new tools, while involving learners and speakers in collaborative efforts in CALL for LCTLs. Here, we showcase innovative approaches in piloting CALL applications for learning L2 Icelandic, integrating CALL into Irish language pedagogy and practice at English-medium primary level, developing game-based engines for Irish learners, and revisiting CALL resources for the endangered Nawat language. Our examples can offer valuable insights and inspiration to empower other CALL practitioners in supporting LCTL educators and learners, and indigenous and endangered language communities.
