Il lavoro di ricerca è volto a delineare la figura di Bernardino Alimena (12 settembre 1861-30 luglio 1915), considerato uno dei fondatori e maggiore esponente della “terza scuola” di diritto penale. La prima parte del lavoro si concentra sulla fase di crisi attraversata dalla penalistica di fine Ottocento. Dopo una ricostruzione del dibattito nazionale ed internazionale ci si soffermerà sulla nascita della terza scuola attraverso l'analisi del saggio Naturalismo critico e diritto penale di Alimena e Una terza scuola di diritto penale in Italia di Emanuele Carnevale, che rappresentano il manifesto del nuovo indirizzo scientifico. Si delineeranno così i caratteri e gli obiettivi della nuova corrente misurando la sua incidenza nel dibattito dottrinale dell'epoca. Dopo aver approfondito il contesto in cui è nata e si è sviluppata la terza scuola, l'attenzione si sposterà sul pensiero di Bernardino Alimena, che verrà ricostruito seguendo due linee di analisi: in primo luogo si esaminerà la sua opera I limiti e i modificatori dell'imputabilità, divisa in tre volumi, pubblicati tra il 1894 e il 1898. Per il suo valore e per l'influenza che ha avuto nel mondo scientifico, tale opera rappresenta il punto privilegiato per osservare da vicino l'originalità del pensiero del criminalista. Successivamente si passerà ad illustrare alcune problematiche riguardanti istituti processualistici connotati dalla forte funzione politico-sociale da essi svolta. Si analizzeranno in particolare temi come l'azione penale, la giuria e la revisione che alimentarono il dibattito dottrinale di quegli anni caratterizzati dall'attesa per il nuovo codice di procedura penale. La seconda parte della ricerca è orientata a verificare quale siano stati i risvolti pratici della riflessione penalistica di Alimena. La ricerca ha il suo nucleo centrale nei lavori della commissione reale istituita con R.D. del 7 novembre 1909, volta a studiare le cause della delinquenza minorile ed a predisporre un codice per l’infanzia. L'esame dei verbali della commissione ci consentirà di indagare l'atteggiamento tenuto dal criminalista di fronte ad una materia in cui convergevano istanze positiviste ed esigenze di rispetto delle garanzie processuali. In ultima analisi rimarrà da analizzare il rapporto tra Alimena e la nuova scienza penalistica sviluppatasi intorno alle nuove teorie di Rocco. Tale studio ci offrirà lo spunto per valutare quale lascito ed incidenza abbia avuto il pensiero del criminalista nella penalistica del Novecento. A questo scopo sarà utile affrontare la carriera universitaria di Alimena, legata alla facoltà di giurisprudenza presso la Regia Università di Modena. Ottenuta la privata docenza in diritto e procedura penale a Napoli, nel 1899 Alimena sarebbe stato nominato professore straordinario all'Università di Cagliari per poi essere chiamato lo stesso anno a Modena e lì, promosso ordinario il 1 dicembre 1902, avrebbe insegnato per quindici anni, fino alla sua morte avvenuta nel 1915. Per ripercorrere la sua attività all'interno dell'università ci avvarremo degli annuari della Regia Università di Modena e degli appunti delle lezioni del criminalista, redatti dai suoi studenti nei primi anni del Novecento. Vedremo così da vicino l'istituzione della Scuola di applicazione per la criminologia e la pratica giudiziaria, voluta dal criminalista sul modello varato qualche tempo prima a Roma da Enrico Ferri. Allo stesso tempo gli appunti dei suoi corsi ci mostreranno il metodo di ricerca seguito dal criminalista di cui troveremo alcune tracce nelle sue opere.

Tratamos de identificar, na ficção narrativa brandoniana, valores próprios do Decadentismo-Simbolismo, seja no que toca à temática predileta do autor, seja no que concerne à(s) forma(s) narrativa(s) empregadas para expressar os seus temas. Além disso, pretendemos salientar o diálogo que se estabelece dentro da própria obra de Raul Brandão, demonstrando a importância de seus primeiros escritos, presentes no livro de contos Impressões e Paisagens (1890). Tratamos, em suma, de estudar e divulgar textos literários em prosa simbolista, sobre os quais os críticos ainda não se debruçaram suficientemente. Com base na teoria do conto, em particular, e na teoria da narrativa, em geral, avaliamos a contribuição da obra de Raul Brandão no panorama da contística portuguesa, tendo por principal objeto de estudo dois contos, escolhidos para o corpus da pesquisa por serem muito significativos no seu primeiro livro: "A Maria Trolha" e "O homem do cancro". Nestes contos, estudamos os temas abordados, os personagens retratados e o perfil estético destas narrativas que mesclam elementos naturalistas, simbolistas e impressionistas, os quais demonstram o pioneirismo brandoniano na composição fronteiriça dos seus primeiros escritos.<br>Abstract: This work proposes a critical study of the Raul Brandão's (1867-1930) symbolist narratives. This thesis aims to provide a theory of human rationality which is consistent with, and supportive of, the naturalistic approach to philosophy of mind. I analyse why the common tendency not to furnish a systematic and rigorous account of rationality is philosophically inadequate - namely, because this overlooks the critical role which the concept of rationality plays in the 'principle of charity' (Quine 1960; Davidson 1984) in philosophy of mind, which is a central part of a unified naturalistic approach to philosophy of mind and rationality. I aim to contribute to the field by rectifying this omission. I identify the theoretical commitments of any naturalistic approach to the theory of rationality - in particular, I argue for the neglected fact that naturalism commits us to an instrumental theory of rationality. I defend the theory of instrumental rationality against its critics, by means of elaborating the implications of the notion - also frequently overlooked - that the concept of rationality is one which applies paradigmatically to agents, rather than to reasoning processes considered in isolation (for example). The resultant instrumental theory of personal rationality which I develop and defend is characterised by two main original (related) features: (1) Certain fundamental features of human rationality are identified as constitutive in nature and status - given that humans are agents, then it follows necessarily that our theory of rationality has these certain characteristics. (2) Full instrumental rationality demands rationality of the self, which introduces further rational constraints of consistency (for example). I build upon these two central features of my theory of rationality to demonstrate how this account can thereby rebut accusations of extreme relativism and inadequacy of scope. Thus I aim to show how my instrumental theory of personal rationality can provide a philosophically adequate account of the normative status of rationality within the remit of the naturalist approach, and thereby also furnish adequate philosophical support for a defensible naturalistic theory of the mind.

This dissertation considers the “strategic naturalism” of Sandra Harding’s standpoint theory in the philosophy of science, and it should be applied to epistemology. Strategic naturalism stipulates that all elements of inquiry are historically and culturally situated, and thereby subject to critical reflection, analysis, and revision. Allegiance to naturalism is de rigueur, yet there is no clear agreement on the term’s meaning. Harding’s standpoint theory reads the lack of definition as indicative of its generative possibilities for epistemic progress. The driving question is why Harding’s approach has not been considered a viable candidate for determining progress in epistemology. Beyond the fact that epistemic labor, in its scientific and non-scientific forms, is a social activity, Harding’s approach recognizes that it is situated in and reinforced by a broader network of social institutions, beliefs, and practices. Harding’s strategic naturalism would invigorate epistemology by increasing the awareness, acceptance, and respect for epistemic difference and drive epistemic progress that not only acknowledges pluralistic ways of knowing but also gives a more accurate account of the knowing subject. Chapter one is a discussion of non-naturalized epistemology and Quinean Naturalized Epistemology (QNE), framed by Harding’s historical account of the related projects of modern epistemology and science. This chapter highlights two important issues. The first issue is that epistemology is more complex than the story Quine offers. The second, and decisive issue is that the shared history of modern epistemology and science demonstrates the influence of social and cultural values on that history, and the long shadows they cast on naturalism debates in epistemology, science, and philosophy of science. Chapter two is an exegetical account of the origins of and motivations for critical feminist responses to both the received epistemological theory and QNE discussed in chapter one. The justifications for the feminist critiques and the problematic issues that motivate these critiques provide the backdrop for the initial, positive response to QNE, as well as their disenchantment with Quine’s influential proposal. Ultimately, feminist epistemologists and philosophers of science assess QNE as not naturalized enough to address their concerns. Chapter three considers several feminist standpoint theories to show that they are more naturalistic and better at providing a multi-faceted theory that is based on actual scientific practice, and re-introduces social values and interests as having a positive influence on epistemology and philosophies of science. This chapter shows that given the closely shared histories and assumptions of modern epistemology and science, FSE would be a viable resource for a more naturalistic epistemology. The final chapter argues that the project of naturalizing epistemology could incorporate FSE insights and the positive role FSE’s controversiality would play in naturalizing epistemology and philosophies of science. If we are to take seriously the concept of situatedness and what that entails, then naturalism must also be situated, and revisited with a critical and reflective eye. The implications on both our epistemic theories and our accounts of what kinds of knowing subject we are would foster epistemic progress.

Intendiamo dimostrare che, senza la rottura con la tradizione aristotelica, il filosofo inglese non ha potuto stabilire nè consolidare la sua filosofia politica. Per questo, abbiamo stabilito due obiettivi fondamentali correspondeti a ciascuno dei capitoli che ci permetteranno di capire come la costruzione della teoria politica hobbesiana diventa da quella rottura. La prima riguarda lo scontro di Hobbes contro il principio della naturalità politica dell'uomo, che articola la sua critica della filosofia tradizionale. Aristotele accredita che il fondamento dell'esistenza umana, come anche l'obiettivo della sua esistenza può essere pensato solo nella polis, per questo è dove gli individui possono essere considerati come esseri politici, e può essere sfruttato pienamente solo. Per Hobbes gli uomini hanno un impulso naturale, non per la vita in comunità, ma per la conservazione di se stesso e di ottenere ciò che consideriamo un bene per se stesso. Acora nel primo capitolo si analizzano uno degli elementi cruciali della concezione hobbesiana e la concezione aristotelica della natura umana, cioè la definizione di come funziona una delle facoltà più fondamentale dell'uomo, che è la ragione. Partenza una concezione meccanicistica della natura e la sua deriva una concezione meccanicistica della natura umana, Hobbes ci dice che c'è una tensione costante nell'uomo tra ragione e desiderio. Debito la inefficienza naturale della ragione sui desideri e sulle azioni umane, questa tensione è insolubile e può al massimo essere minimizzato attraverso l'istituzione di una persona artificiale. E 'attraverso la trasformazione artificiale dell'ordine naturale delle cose che l'uomo può, insomma, creare mezzi ragionevolmente sicuri per preservare se stesso. Il nostro secondo obiettivo, che è il secondo capitolo, è quello di analizzare il rapporto tra due teorie radicalmente diverse sul movimento in generale, un teleologica (Aristotele) e altri meccanici (Hobbes). Il problema del movimento è senza dubbio una delle principali sfide per il pensiero aristotelico. Nel libro III della Fisica che porta una definizione rigorosa di questa teoria. Si ritiene che la fisica aristotelica è, dall'inizio alla fine, una teoria del movimento, per tutto ciò che si muove è mosso da qualcosa. Inizio questa definizione si mostrerá come Hobbes svolge questa concezione del movimento alle teorie di morale e politico; capisce che non solo i corpi in generale, ma anche gli uomini si muovono inerziali, in modo che non solo i loro movimenti fisici, ma anche le emozioni si muovono senza fine e senza riposo. Infine, ci mostrerà a che punto questa teoria usata per spiegare il comportamento dei corpi generale è impiegato per Hobbes a esplicare il potere cognitivo dell'uomo, e le loro passioni e il loro comportamento.<br>O ponto central da nossa pesquisa versa sobre a posição de Hobbes frente à teoria do animal político de Aristóteles (Zoon Politikon). Pretendemos mostrar que, sem o rompimento com a tradição aristotélica, o filósofo inglês não conseguiria instituir nem consolidar a sua filosofia política. Para isso, estabelecemos dois objetivos fundamentais correspondentes a cada um dos capítulos, os quais nos permitirão entender de que modo a construção da teoria política hobbesiana se faz a partir desse rompimento. O primeiro versa sobre o embate de Hobbes contra o princípio da naturalidade política do homem, que articula a sua crítica à filosofia tradicional. Aristóteles acredita que o fundamento da existência do homem, como também o objetivo da sua existência, só pode ser pensado na pólis, pois, essa é o lugar onde os indivíduos podem ser considerados como seres políticos e, somente nela, podem realizar-se plenamente. Para Hobbes os homens têm um impulso natural, não para a vida em comunidade, mas para a conservação de si mesmos e para a obtenção daquilo que consideram um bem para si próprios. Ainda no primeiro capítulo, analisaremos um dos elementos cruciais da concepção hobbesiana e da concepção aristotélica acerca da natureza humana, isto é, a definição do modo como opera uma das faculdade mais fundamentais do homem, a razão. Partindo de uma concepção mecanicista da natureza e dela derivando uma concepção mecanicista da natureza humana, Hobbes nos mostra que há uma tensão permanente no homem entre a razão e os desejos. Devido a ineficácia natural da razão sobre os desejos e sobre as ações humanas, essa tensão é insolúvel e pode, quando muito, ser minimizada por meio da constituição de uma pessoa artificial. Sendo assim, é por meio da transformação artificial da ordem natural das coisas que o homem pode, enfim, criar meios razoavelmente seguros para preservar a si mesmo. O nosso segundo objetivo correspondente ao capítulo dois, é analisar a relação entre duas teorias radicalmente distintas acerca do movimento em geral, uma teleológica (Aristóteles) e outra mecanicista (Hobbes). O problema do movimento é, sem dúvida, um dos principais desafios com que se defronta o pensamento aristotélico. No livro III da Física, Aristóteles traz uma definição rigorosa dessa teoria. Considera-se que a Física aristotélica é, do princípio ao fim, uma teoria do movimento, pois tudo o que se move é movido por alguma coisa. A partir dessa definição, mostraremos como Hobbes transporta essa concepção do movimento para as teorias da moral e política; ele entende que não apenas os corpos em geral, mas também os homens se movem inercialmente, de modo que, não apenas seus movimentos físicos, mas também suas emoções se movem sem fim e sem repouso. Por fim, mostraremos em que medida essa teoria, utilizada para explicar o comportamento dos corpos em geral, é empregada por Hobbes para explicar o poder cognitivo do homem, bem como as suas paixões e o seu comportamento.

My proposed PhD, titled Zola's Naturalism in The Rougon-Macquart: The Fatality of Sexuality, aims to study the basics of the naturalistic novel in the second half of the nineteenth-century France. Firstly, I have looked back at previous critical studies that were dedicated to the themes of sexuality and/or fatality in Zola's writing. This introductory chapter helped me understand how far critics have gone and what a long way we still have to go before we can fully appreciate the importance of these themes in the context of naturalism. Throughout the twenty novels that make The Rougon-Macquart series, I studied the fictional characters in their being, their appearance and their evolution in space and time. I therefore investigated whether or not these characters were masters or slaves of their space and time and beyond that, what influences they had on each other. Afterwards, I questioned the fecundity of the theme of sexuality in Zola's work to find out both the aspects of originality in his writing and his contribution to the modern novel. Nevertheless, I have criticized Zola on a wider angle as an emeritus writer with his own "weaknesses". Methodologically, I have largely used the semiotics approach along with psychoanalysis due to the specificity of sexuality. Despite the wide range of critical studies on Zola's novels, in my sense, most of them have so far failed to tackle naturalism at its foundations, i.e. sexuality. In fact, if one attempted to free The Rougon-Macquart from the theme of sexuality, neither the Rougon-Macquart family would exist nor the twenty novels they generated. Studying sexuality therefore appeared to be essential to the understanding of the naturalistic theory. However, and surprisingly so, most of Zola's critics have avoided that inescapable theme, perhaps more likely for reasons of decency rather than for scientific ones. It is in such context that I have decided that it was time to bring it to light for the sake of truth about the knowledge of Zola.

Considérés pendant longtemps comme des moyens de dérision et de moquerie grivoise et insensée, les pastiches et les caricatures adressés à l’œuvre zolienne avaient été souvent relégués au rang de critique « légère », marginale et inutile. Or notre travail consiste à démontrer, supports humoristiques à l’appui, que tout en étant comique et dérisoire, cette manière un peu particulière de présenter le texte littéraire était un moyen efficace de lire, comprendre, analyser et critiquer l’œuvre zolienne. Ainsi et tout en tournant en dérision le chef naturaliste et ses ouvrages, pasticheurs et caricaturistes étaient les premiers sinon les seuls à pénétrer le sens profond de la pensée et de la création zoliennes, à voir les différentes nuances du style et de l’imaginaire zoliens et à pouvoir rendre compte de la spécificité d’une œuvre à la fois une et multiple. Pastiches et caricatures s’avèrent ainsi des moyens d’institutionnalisation qui, en reprenant la norme zolienne et en la perpétuant, avaient participé à constituer l’œuvre raillée comme création littéraire incontournable et donc à la réhabiliter en tant que texte littéraire à part entière. Ainsi, tout en faisant du rire et de l’exagération les fondements même de sa lecture critique, cette réception humoristique s’avère être l’une des figures les plus importantes sinon la plus importante et la plus « sérieuse » de la réception naturaliste du XIXème siècle<br>Considered during a long time as means of derision and smutty and insane mockery, lampoons and caricatures addressed to zolien’s work had often been relegated to the rank of light, marginal and useless critic. However our work consists in demonstrating that while being comic and desidory, this manner a few particular to present the literary text was a means efficient to read, to understand, to analyse and to criticize zolien’s work. Thus, and all while doing of the laughter and the exaggeration the same foundations of his readings, this humorous receipt proves to be one of the most important faces otherwise the more important and most serious of the naturalistic receipt to the XIXth century

Having as a central focus the questioning about the authorial signature, the critical analysis concentrated itself in the strategies of this authorial dissemination through three basic principles: the duplicity of the opening prologues between Brás Cubas supposed author and Machado de Assis the authorial signature inscribed in the book; the fiction of the dead author and the conception of autobiography as a portrait of the real author, questioning the frontiers between the fictional and empirical author; the truncated citations and the continuous dislocations of the supposed author Brás Cubas to the function of reader of his own book, which turns the reader into an author, promoting a corrosion of the authorial unity. As a conclusion, the study demonstrated that the questioning of the authorial signature in Memórias Póstumas was an instabilizing element of the romance standard in the realism-naturalism of the XIX century, also affecting the criticism of the sources by means of the authorial reading fiction responsible for the gnawing citations of an author-reader that speaks to us from the other side of the mistery<br>A proposta deste estudo é investigar como a divisão autoral é processada no romance Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas e qual sua representação para o cientificismo-realista literário do século XIX. Apresenta como foco central o questionamento sobre a paternidade autora. A análise crítica se concentrou nas estratégias dessa disseminação autoral por meio de três princípios básicos: a duplicidade dos prólogos de abertura entre Brás Cubas autor suposto - e Machado de Assis - a assinatura autoral inscrita no livro; a ficção do autor morto e a concepção de autobiografia como retrato do autor real, colocando em questão as fronteiras entre autor ficcional e empírico; as citações truncadas e os contínuos deslocamentos do autor suposto Brás Cubas - para a função de leitor do próprio livro que escreve, o que faz do leitor autor, promovendo a corrosão da unicidade autoral. Como conclusão, o estudo demonstrou que o questionamento da paternidade autoral em Memórias Póstumas foi um elemento desestabilizador do modelo de romance do realismo-naturalismo do século XIX, bem como abalou os pressupostos da crítica de fontes por meio da ficção de leitura autoral responsável por citações roídas de um autor-leitor que nos fala do outro lado do mistério

L’idée de « représentation du monde sans jugement », double visée du réel et du neutre, rassemble des œuvres qui aspirent à donner à voir le monde sans en orienter le commentaire et en débusquant le jugement dans nos représentations. En faisant l’hypothèse d’un « réalisme neutre », nous étudions les stratégies dramaturgiques de suspension du sens qui répondent à cette intention. Nous interrogeons l’existence d’une lignée de dramaturges qui, depuis le théâtre clinique de Tchekhov et à l’opposé du théâtre critique brechtien, conduit le spectateur à « l’étonnement d’un monde sans procès » (Barthes). En confrontant ces représentations du monde sans jugement au théâtre documentaire et au réalisme critique brechtien, nous analysons un changement de paradigme dans la représentation du réel, sa modélisation clarifiante et engagée laissant place à une expérience ouverte à l’interprétation. De Horváth aux auteurs quotidiennistes, en passant par Fleisser, Adamov, Kroetz et jusqu’à des réinventions contemporaines d’un théâtre « presque documentaire », comment ces esthétiques de la monstration échappent-elles à une simple symptomatologie superficielle du monde ainsi qu’aux malentendus induits par la délégation du jugement au spectateur ? Cette question oriente notre étude des décentrements dramaturgiques du réalisme, à travers lesquels s’affirment une autre pensée de la responsabilité critique du dramaturge et une dimension politique du neutre. Les œuvres et démarches de M. Vinaver, O. Hirata, J. Pommerat et L. Norén illustrent quatre modalités de ce « réalisme neutre », de l’exemption à la pluralisation du sens, en passant par le trouble, l’errance ou le saisissement du spectateur<br>Prejudice-free depictions of the world are the aim both of reality and of any neutral approach. They bring together works of art that show the world without inducing any commentary while exposing our opinions in all representations. We will hypothesise the concept of “neutral realism” to analyse the strategies used by dramatic arts to produce suspension of meaning. We question the existence of a tradition of dramatic authors – ranging from Tchekhov’s “clinical theater” to Brecht’s “critical theater” – that lead spectators to what Barthes termed the “astonishment upon discovering a trial-free world”. We will weigh such prejudice-free representations of the world against documentary drama and against Brecht’s critical realism. Such a comparison will evidence a paradigm shift where an explicit, committed type of modelling seems to give way to a more open interpretative experience. From Horváth to daily-life authors and to Fleisser, Adamov, Kroetz and other contemporary re-inventors of “quasi- documentary-style” drama, the question can be thus articulated: how do such illustrative aesthetics succeed in circumventing both merely superficial symptomatology of the world and the misunderstandings that might arise from the decision of leaving the viewer to judge the work on their own? The answer to the question guides our analysis of the dramatic arts’ decentering of realism, through which another vision of the responsibility of the dramatic author emerges, as well as a new take on the political nature of a neutral approach. Friedrich Nietzsche’s 1874 essay "On the Use and Disadvantage of History for Life" (HL) presents ideas on how the past ought to be appropriated and how history ought to be written. His 1887 book "On the Genealogy of Morality" (GM) presents an account of the historical development of European morality. Given that Nietzsche appropriates the past through writing in GM, the question arises: does GM put into practice Nietzsche’s earlier ideas from HL concerning how the past ought to be appropriated through the writing of history? I argue that GM does indeed apply some of Nietzsche’s key ideas from HL. In particular, GM remains consistent with HL insofar as it appropriates the past unhistorically, makes use of the monumental and critical modes of history, and appropriates the past in a way that encourages the flourishing of an elite kind of human being. However, Nietzsche’s manner of appropriating the past in GM also diverges from what he espouses in HL. Whereas in HL he emphasizes the usefulness and desirability of forgetting and distorting the past, in GM he exhibits a more notable concern with knowing the truth about the past. I show that this difference in approach is due to the significant change that Nietzsche’s epistemology underwent between the writing of HL and the writing of GM. This difference in approach notwithstanding, the great virtue of illuminating GM through the lens of HL is that it allows us to see more clearly how a lack of concern with truth and knowledge plays a positive role in Nietzsche’s writing of the past in GM. It also helps us to understand why he appropriates the past the way that he does in GM. Just as in HL Nietzsche thought that the past ought to be appropriated in a way that encourages the activity of genius, his writing of the history of European morality in GM is undertaken with the intent to encourage the occurrence and activity of a select kind of human being, a kind of human being that Nietzsche values above all else.

I will follow the theoretical and critical discourse, related to establishing of Czech literary naturalism. My sources will be both book editions (essays from the volumes "Lehký harcovník", or "O národní literaturu", made available by the Melantrich publishing company) and journalistic production. Among the personalities she will focus on F. Schulz and V. Mrštík, possibly on other authors according to the primary heuristics results. The idea about general extension of naturalism will be provided by relevant syntheses or partial monographs (ADČL III; Haman: Trvání v proměně; Janáčková: Česká literatura na přelomu století; Český román na sklonku 19. století).

Dissertação de Mestrado em Literatura e Cultura Portuguesas apresentada à Universidade Aberta<br>Esta dissertação tem como objeto de estudo Zilda, a peça de estreia de Alfredo Cortez. Nela se faz a análise da obra enquanto texto dramático e teatral, por um lado, e, por outro, a sua inserção nas principais tendências do teatro em Portugal no início dos anos vinte do século passado, retratadas a partir de visões críticas suscitadas em publicações periódicas da época. Zilda, que subiu à cena em 1921, é, de algum modo, representativa do esforço de renovação do teatro português. A inquietação política e social vivida no início do século XX e a nova conceção do mundo originam um momento de crise que o drama começaria a enfrentar, levando-o a refletir sobre os novos temas que preocupam o homem. Se, formalmente, a peça ainda se revela presa aos pressupostos da estética naturalista, apresenta-se inovadora em termos da temática explorada. Para além da abordagem de diferentes áreas que consideramos relevantes, como o cenário, as personagens, as suas relações com os outros, a interação com os espaços e com o tempo, procuramos analisar o reflexo da obra no panorama teatral português. Apontamos, por fim, o sentido da obra no seu tempo, bem como o humanismo que perpassa todo o texto.<br>This dissertation aims the study of Zilda, the first play written by Alfredo Cortez that was presented in a theater. On one hand, this text analyzes the dramatic and theatrical text and also the principal tendencies of the theater in Portugal in the beginning of the 20th century, based on the critics opinions in periodical publications of that time. Zilda, which was presented to the public for the first time in 1921, it is in a certain way, the representation of the renovation effort of the Portuguese theater. The social and political uncertainty in the beginning of the 20th century, and the new understanding of the new world, create a moment of crisis that dramatic pieces would face, allowing it to reflect new themes that worry humanity. Even though the piece is still attached to the past beliefs of naturalistic beauty, it is still presented as something new due to the innovative way its themes were explored. Besides the approach of the different areas that we consider relevant such as the characters, their relation with each other, the interaction with space and time, we try to analyze the reflection of the work in the entire Portuguese theatre. Finally, we focus on the relevance of the piece in the time it was written as well as the humanism that is shown throughout the text.

Gloria Giusti, André Antoine tra mito e prassi della scena. La tesi affronta l’attività registica di André Antoine durante la direzione del Théâtre Libre e del Théâtre Antoine riconsiderata alla luce di una prospettiva critica tendente da un lato a evidenziare il fissarsi di un’immagine mitica di Antoine ancora vivente l’artista e replicata quasi automaticamente da gran parte della storiografia; dall’altro a ricollocare nel contesto della prassi dello spettacolo contemporaneo episodi ancorati ad una dimensione leggendaria, mediante l’analisi di alcuni degli allestimenti più significativi. Alla prima questione Gloria Giusti dedica il capitolo di apertura della tesi. Partendo da documenti originati dallo stesso contesto produttivo del Théâtre Libre (come le famose Brochures destinate al pubblico degli abbonati, utili all’individuazione delle linee programmatiche del teatro e alla ricostruzione delle prime stagioni) e analizzando i volumi dei Souvenirs dello stesso Antoine dedicati al Théâtre Libre, al Théâtre Antoine e alla duplice direzione dell’Odéon, viene definito un percorso storiografico che dal pioneristico studio di Adolphe Thalasso del 1909 arriva ai saggi degli ultimi trent’anni, nei quali si è assistito ad un progressivo allontanamento dall’automatica assimilazione del regista francese alla scuola naturalista e alla considerazione delle sue messe in scena come di oggetti dotati di piena autonomia estetica, come emerge anche da un noto contributo del figlio di Antoine, André Paul (Le naturalisme de Antoine. Une légende). Già a partire dagli studi di Francis Pruner e James B. Sanders si sviluppa un crescente interesse per l’analisi degli allestimenti, con una particolare attenzione ai décors. Il capitolo evidenzia inoltre come la rilettura critica dei testi di Zola e di Jullien abbia portato a un ridimensionamento della polemica naturalista nei confronti delle convenzioni teatrali ottocentesche e come, più recentemente, alcuni studiosi francesi (Naugrette-Christophe, Sarrazac, De Rougement, Marcerou) abbiano tentato di rivalutare gran parte dei materiali relativi alle mises en scène, superando così quella visione mitica, cristallizzatasi soprattutto con lo studio di Thalasso e con la biografia ad opera di Matei Roussou, che ha condizionato, ancora negli anni Settanta, perfino studiosi accorti come Denis Bablet. Le più recenti prospettive critiche hanno costituito il punto di partenza per la definizione dei restanti due capitoli della tesi, rispettivamente dedicati al Théâtre Libre e al Théâtre Antoine, mentre le vicende della duplice direzione dell’Odéon sono state affrontate solo occasionalmente e comunque al fine di sottolineare aspetti già individuati nelle fasi precedenti. In termini generali l’obiettivo dei due capitoli è stato quello di evidenziare, attraverso gli allestimenti più significativi delle prime due fasi, la progressiva autonomia di Antoine dagli autori drammatici, ridimensionando così l’immagine di Antoine regista testocentrico comunemente sostenuta dalla critica. Inoltre è stata evidenziata, già dagli esordi del Théâtre Antoine, una vera e propria estetica del ‘riuso’ degli apparati scenografici, modificando così sensibilmente la concezione del milieu. Nel secondo capitolo, oltre che sul materiale documentario già prodotto da Sanders e Pruner, l’analisi degli allestimenti si è fondata prevalentemente sugli eterogenei materiali contenuti nei Fonds Antoine e Mévisto della Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal, nel Recueil Mosnier della Bibliothèque Nationale de France, su copioni (come quello di Spettri di Ibsen), sulle cronache di Francisque Sarcey raccolte in Quarante ans de Théâtre, e sui numerosi articoli comparsi nei principali quotidiani e periodici dell’epoca, tra cui si distinguono in particolare gli «Annales du Théâtre et de la Musique» che coprono il periodo dell’attività artistica di Antoine dal 1887 al 1915 e nei quali, oltre alle consuete valutazioni della drammaturgia, non mancano frequenti note sulla recitazione e sugli allestimenti. L’indagine si rivolge all’attività del Théâtre Libre, passata in rassegna attraverso alcuni degli allestimenti più rappresentativi, da Jacques Damour a En Famille e La nuit bergamasque, soffermandosi anche sul ruolo della drammaturgia straniera, segnatamente quella ibseniana, e analizzando le messe in scena di Spettri e dell’Anatra selvatica, nel tentativo di individuare le linee di sviluppo della concezione estetica di Antoine in relazione alle riprese di un medesimo spettacolo. In questa prospettiva assume una particolare importanza il copione impiegato per l’allestimento di Spettri nella determinazione dell’impianto registico complessivo, dell’organizzazione dello spazio scenico, nonché degli interventi di natura più squisitamente drammaturgica. Nel terzo capitolo della tesi, attraverso lo studio dell’attività del Théâtre Antoine, vengono ridiscusse le tradizionali linee storiografiche che hanno dato luogo a un’immagine cristallizzata della funzione registica, fino a quel momento sovrapponibile a quella del direttore di scena, ridefinendo il percorso artistico di Antoine alla luce del suo graduale affrancamento dalla ‘dittatura’ del testo drammatico. Col Théâtre Antoine si assiste inoltre alla nascita di una nuova attività non più legata alla cerchia elitaria degli abbonati ma con intenti dichiaratamente commerciali e con spettacoli appositamente destinati ad un pubblico pagante e quindi perfettamente inserita nel circuito teatrale parigino. Questo radicale mutamento nella gestione economica dell’impresa prevede una vera e propria strategia di mercato, a partire dalla definitiva collocazione del Théâtre Antoine nella sala dei Menus-Plaisirs nel Boulevard de Strasbourg. La stabilizzazione sulla rive droite, in una zona ad alta concentrazione di teatri, conclude ddefinitivamente le esperienze legate ai circoli privati e concorre ad incentivare un nuovo progetto spettacolare, il cosiddetto «Théâtre à bon marché», con l’obiettivo comunque di imporre un repertorio di qualità, rappresentando autori quali Georges Courteline, Maurice Donnay, Octave Mirbeau, Georges Ancey, Pierre Wolff, già conosciuti al pubblico del Théâtre Libre. Questi aspetti, che si pongono al crocevia di scelte organizzative, gestionali, drammaturgiche ed estetiche, sono stati ricostruiti non solo a partire dalla documentazione di carattere amministrativo, ma anche sulla base del Journal di Jules Renard e dei feuilletons dell’attore Georges Saverne (Dix ans à l’école d’Antoine) apparsi sulla rivista «Comoedia». Uno degli esiti più significativi della ricerca condotta da Gloria Giusti è il reperimento di una cospicua documentazione fotografica, contenuta nel Recueil Mosnier facente parte del Fonds Antoine della Bibliothèque Nationale de France e presso le Archives Nationales. Il Recueil Mosnier, insieme di materiali eterogenei raccolti da Charles Mosnier, attore della troupe di Antoine, costituisce il fondo documentario di maggior rilievo, specie dal punto di vista iconografico. La raccolta consiste di sette volumi miscellanei contenenti programmi di sala, ritagli di stampa, annotazioni dell’autore e, soprattutto, fotografie che documentano in prevalenza le scenografie utilizzate nel corso di diverse stagioni. L’elevata quantità delle immagini costituisce il punto di forza del Recueil Mosnier: si tratta di un vero e proprio archivio iconografico, contenente anche immagini tratte dai numeri speciali delle riviste «Le Théâtre» e «L’Illustration Théâtrale» dedicati alle stagioni del Théâtre Antoine e del Théâtre de l’Odéon. Il Recueil Mosnier contiene anche un ampio numero di recensioni tratte principalmente dalla «Revue Théâtrale» (dove compaiono sotto forma di dispense i primi studi di Thalasso sul Théâtre Libre), da «Le Temps», «Gils Blas» e da «Le Figaro Illustré». Il Recueil contiene integralmente, suddivisa in fascicoli, Le Théâtre Libre Illustré di Rodolphe Darzens, con disegni di Lucien Métivet. Alle Archives Nationales sono invece conservate fotografie relative alla seconda direzione del Théâtre de l’Odéon da parte di Antoine. Questi materiali hanno costituito uno dei vettori documentari nell’analisi di alcuni degli episodi spettacolari più rappresentativi dell’attività del Théâtre Antoine, quali La parisienne, La terre e Roi Lear.

Lenka Mundevová Translation of Colloquial Language Devices in Fiction: A Century of Maupassant's Ivrogne in Czech Translation Abstract The dissertation compares the stylization of the dialogues in the French original of Maupassant's short story Ivrogne (The Drunkard), written in 1884, with five Czech translations published between 1902 and 1997. The comparative analysis is focused on the devices of colloquial language, including dialect, which appear frequently in the dialogues of the story and prove to be extraordinarily useful when interpreting Maupassant's text. The analysis of the excerpted material is preceded by the description of the basic characteristics of colloquial French and Czech, followed by the description of their stratifications. The mutual relation of the colloquial language varieties is an important prerequisite for the evaluation of the translations of colloquial language devices and their appropriateness in the individual Czech versions of Ivrogne. The paper also deals with the development of Czech aesthetic translation standards and their relation to the standard of local fiction, outlining the important tendencies of Czech fiction translation applied when colloquial devices were conveyed from French to Czech during the specified timeframe. This thesis is not structured as a conventional empirical study (theoretical background, method, results, discussion), but instead consists of an iterative series of attempts at making sense of same-race prejudice – hopefully systematically homing in on a richer and more acute understanding of the phenomenon. The chapters are grouped together in pairs or triplets – each grouping addressing different but related perspectives on the problem. Chapters 1 and 2 are contextual, setting the scene historically and conceptually. Chapters 3, 4 and 5 introduce three different perspectives on using phenomenology as a means of approaching the issue of same-race prejudice. Chapters 6 and 7 are dedicated to looking at the themes of same-race prejudice, a critical interrogation of the themes from the interview discussions, the literature and how same-race prejudice is experienced, played out and sustained. Chapter 8 links back to Chapter 1 by casting another look at sensitivity and responsiveness to same-race prejudice by organisations whose work is supposedly on prejudice eradication. The chapter further links with both Chapters 3 and 4 by calling upon a phenomenological understanding to humanity as what can bring a liveable change to humanity regarding same-race prejudice. Chapter 9 serves as a summary of all the chapters, what each individually and collectively hoped to achieve, and the general findings and statements about same-race prejudice from the chapters’ theoretical discussions, research interviews, and critical interrogation of both the mundane and theoretical understanding.<br>Psychology<br>D. Este estudo tem como principal objectivo completar o conhecimento referente a Martim de Figueiredo, autor do Commentum Plinii (1529), obra relevante do humanismo português, mas a respeito da qual os estudos especializados não são extensos, encontrando-se as referências a esta obra, na maioria dos casos, dispersas em vários estudos de variada abrangência. O presente trabalho divide-se em duas partes: uma primeira parte dedicada à biografia do humanista, uma segunda dedicada à contextualização da Naturalis Historia nos estudos universitários em Itália e em Portugal, e à difusão do Commentum Plinii dentro e fora da Península Ibérica. Em ambos os aspectos, o presente trabalho contribui com novidades relativas à bibliografia específica: por um lado, apresenta novos documentos relativos à biografia do humanista. Por outro lado, apresenta exemplares actualmente conservados e ausentes nos catálogos de referência e nos estudos específicos.<br>The intention of this study is to contribute to the investigation about Martim de Figueiredo, the author of the Commentum Plinii (1529). This is an important work of Portuguese humanism and existing studies about the subject are not extensive. However, we can find references to this work amongst various studies of different lengths. This study is divided into two parts: one dedicated to a brief biography of the humanist, a second dedicated the Naturalis Historia contextualized into the academic studies in Italy and Portugal, and the transmission of the Commentum Plinii in and out of the Iberian Peninsula. The present work contributes, in both aspects, with new data concerning the specific bibliography: on the one hand, it presents new documents related to the humanist biography and on the other, it presents new copies currently preserved and missing from the specific catalogues and studies.
