Abstract:
[Truncated abstract] Annual grasses have colonised a diverse range of environments in southern Australia. The “Silvergrasses” of the genus Vulpia are excellent examples being widely distributed, are prevalent weeds of agriculture and have had a long history to naturalise on the continent. Research was undertaken on Vulpia populations to identify if naturalising species have reproductive traits that provide propagules with the best chances of success. Furthermore, research aimed at investigating if these traits vary between species and their populations and how this variability related to the environment. A herbarium and field study was undertaken to establish what Vulpia species occur in SW Australia and to investigate environmental factors affecting their distribution. 169 herbaria specimens was examined and a botanical field survey of 189 sites was carried out in September 1998. Four species occur in the region: V. fasciculata, V. muralis, V. bromoides and two variants of V. myuros (V. myuros var. megalura and V. myuros var. myuros). V. bromoides and V. myuros were introduced early into the region while V. fasciculata and V. muralis more recently. It is plausible that Vulpia invaded the region via early seaport settlements and was spread by agricultural expansion. 96% of field sites contained V. myuros var. myuros, 79% V. myuros var. megalura, 50% V. bromoides, 6% V. fasciculata and 6% contained V. muralis. 90% of sites contained a mix of species and 9% of sites contained pure species stands. V. myuros var. myuros is the most widespread species and dominant form of V. myuros. It is found from high rainfall regions through to arid locations occurring on mostly light textured low fertility soils. V. muralis and V. fasciculata occur infrequently with the former widely dispersed and the later occurring predominantly on sands. V. bromoides occurs extensively in high rainfall regions but rarely extends to locations receiving less than 400-450mm annual rainfall and northward above 30°00’ latitude. It is predominantly on light to loamy textured soils that are fertile and acid. The most common species V. myuros and V. bromoides often coexist within sites but the dominance of one over the other is strongly correlated with growing season length and false break frequency. V. bromoides is positively correlated to growing season length and V. myuros is negatively related. The distribution of Vulpia species is strongly influenced by climate and soils. Variability in distribution is a reflection of the ecological differentiation between species to colonise different environments

Abstract:

The work of Caravaggio, which was recognized as revolutionary in his own time and exerted a profound influence on seventeenth century painting all over Europe, has prompted a wide range of interpretations among modern art historians. Some, emphasizing the controversy generated by his religious pictures, have seen him as a daringly irreverent artist, while others have found his unidealized "naturalistic" style fundamentally well-suited to the spirit of the Catholic Counter-Reformation. Some detect a boldly overt homoeroticism in many of his pictures, while others claim not to see it at all. Some understand him to have worked in an unprecedentedly direct, almost visceral way, while others emphasize his sympathy with new directions in the sciences or the intellectual sophistication with which he played his naturalistic style against the precedents of classical and earlier Renaissance art.

Caravaggio's difficult personality has also lent itself to different readings. Some see him as a sociopath, if not a psychopath, while others see him calculatedly performing the role of social rebel in a manner that looks forward to the self-consciously dissident posturings of modern artists. Some art-historians have been led to conclude that he had highly-developed non-conformist values and tendencies that could be described as "libertine" in at least some of the varied senses in which that word was used during his time.

The aim of this dissertation is to discuss the relation of Caravaggio's work and personal example to his immediate art-historical and cultural context, but also to trace their influence on an ever-more-disparate group of artists active in the seventeenth century in order to see whether his style, sometimes characterized as "Baroque Naturalism," actually implied a set of values beyond its efficacy as an artistic strategy, whether a commitment to it implied or was understood to imply a non-conformist or libertine orientation that might be a matter of deep conviction on the part of the artist or a position felt to be appropriate to certain themes or in certain contexts.

The first chapter examines Caravaggio himself, while the second discusses three artists—Giovanni Baglione, Orazio Gentileschi, and Guido Reni—who knew him personally and responded to his work as it burst so dramatically on the scene in the very first years of the century. The third chapter discussed three artists who were active shortly afterward, whose engagement with Caravaggio testifies to a wider field of influence: Valentin de Boulogne, Domenico Fetti, and Guido Cagnacci. The final chapter sets two very different artists—Salvator Rosa and Nicolas Poussin—side by side in order to expose both the radically different responses to Caravaggio's legacy and the diverse senses in which the word "libertine" must be understood.

While the evidence does seem to suggest that at least some artists utilized Caravaggesque naturalism in order to invoke a well-defined "alternative tradition," one that was understood to imply a certain range of values, very few committed themselves to his approach strictly or for very long. Poussin rejected it emphatically. Yet Poussin, too, deliberately positioned himself on the margins of the Roman art world in order to cultivate a distinctive approach to art, one that seems to have been consciously based on deeply-held philosophical convictions. The lesson seems to be that Caravaggio's example made it possible for later artists to develop strategies with which to express their dissent from the prevailing values and practices of their time, and that even if their work did not look like his, they were indebted to him.

Abstract:
The thesis argues that the relations between culture and government are best viewed through an analysis of the programmatic and institutional contexts for the use of culture as an interface in the relations between citizenship and government. Discussion takes place through an analysis of the history of art programmes which, in seeking to target a 'general' population, have attempted to equip this population with various particular capacities. We aim to provide a history of rationalities of art administration. This will provide us with an approach through which we might understand some of the seemingly irreconcilable policy discourses which characterise contemporary discussion of government arts funding. Research for this thesis aims to make a contribution to historical research on arts institutions in Australia and provide a base from which to think about the role of government in culture in contemporary Australia. In order to reflect on the relations between government and culture the thesis discusses the key rationales for the conjunction of art, citizenship and government in post-World War Two (WWII) Australia to the present day. Thus, the thesis aims to contribute an overview of the discursive origins of the main contemporary rationales framing arts subvention in post-WWII Australia. The relations involved in the government of culture in late eighteenth-century France, nineteenth-century Britain, America in the 1930s and Britain during WWII are examined by way of arguing that the discursive influences on government cultural policy in Australia have been diverse. It is suggested in relation to present day Australian cultural policy that more effective terms of engagement with policy imperatives might be found in a history of the funding of culture which emphasises the plurality of relations between governmental programmes and the self-shaping activities of citizens. During this century there has been a shift in the political rationality which organises government in modern Western liberal democracies. The historical case studies which form section two of the thesis enable us to argue that, since WWII, cultural programmes have been increasingly deployed on the basis of a governmental rationality that can be described as advanced or neo-liberal. This is both in relation to the forms these programmes have taken and in relation to the character of the forms of conduct such programmes have sought to shape in the populations they act upon. Mechanisms characteristic of such neo-liberal forms of government are those associated with the welfare state and include cultural programmes. Analysis of governmental programmes using such conceptual tools allows us to interpret problems of modern social democratic government less in terms of oppositions between structure and agency and more in terms of the strategies and techniques of government which shape the activities of citizens. Thus, the thesis will approach the field of cultural management not as a field of monolithic decision making but as a domain in which there are a multiplicity of power effects, knowledges, and tactics, which react to, or are based upon, the management of the population through culture. The thesis consists of two sections. Section one serves primarily to establish a set of historical and theoretical co-ordinates on which the more detailed historical work of the thesis in section two will be based. We conclude by emphasising the necessity for the continuation of a mix of policy frameworks in the construction of the relations between art, government and citizenship which will encompass a focus on diverse and sometimes competing policy goals.

Abstract:
This paper examine's painters attempts to find, in their chosen medium, a meaningful representation of nature. It proposes the idea that despite the best efforts of some of western art's most gifted artists, this has remained an elusive goal so far and this is likely to remain the case in the future. The paper concludes with an examination of Postmodern theoretical discourse and the effects it has had on painters who may want to attempt to make a meaningful statement about nature with their art. It goes on to make a case that despite the difficulty of the task, there are some very sound reasons why any painter wishing to attempt it, should do so. Some associated issues are raised in the course of the investigation: 1/. An investigation of perception of nature. 2/. The role of language in shaping our perceptions of nature. 3/. The inability of language itself to capture a satisfactory recreation of the experience of nature. 4/. Abstract:
Informed by the writings of Michel Foucault, this thesis investigates the discourse on folk art in Australia. Emphasis is placed on exploring the recent emergence of a body of statements that contribute to its Australian specificity. This thesis considers the various discursive strategies that construct the domain of folk art in this country, including the contribution played by overseas folkloric studies in establishing the field. By using a framework operating under the principle of distance and immediacy, the processes of production and dissemination of cultural goods are examined to reveal how material folk culture is located as a peripheral artistic practice. In this regard, the systems of exclusion that operate within high art discourses to define and marginalise women's artistic practice are surveyed as a concomitant discursive domain. A study of makeshift furniture is undertaken to elucidate how these strategies combined with processes of connoisseurship are involved in constructing the domain of Australian folk art and the appraisal of its cultural value. In the final analysis, attention is given to the subject of aesthetics and the appreciation of folk art.

My creative work investigates the negative space, the ‘in between space’ that leads to new knowledge about other artists and other cultures. The fundamental and distinctive elements of Islamic pattern in my paintings in the exhibition Dialogue in Diversity are based on my own experience of misinformation as well as rewarding collaboration within a culturally blended family.This research explores the continuity of the arabesque and polygon. I experiment with the hexagon and its geometric shapes, with its many repeat patterns and the interrelatedness of the negative space, or the void indicative of the space between layers of past and present civilizations that are significant fundamentals in my paintings.The thesis Transforming perceptions of Islamic culture in Australia through collaboration in contemporary art traces the visual history of Orientalist art, beginning with a key image of Arthur Streeton, Fatima Habiba, painted in 1897 and contrasts Streeton’s perception with that of important Islamic women artists working globally such as Emily Jacir who participated in the Zones of Contact 2006 Biennale of Sydney.A core element of my research is working with emerging artists from Islamic backgrounds in Western Sydney. The February 2007 exhibition Transforming Perceptions Via . . . at the University of Wollongong brought together artists from east and west.By adopting the Islamic pattern in my paintings, I hope to strengthen the interaction between the Christian and Muslim interface in Australian contemporary society. My work contemplates the human aspects of relationships and responsibilities within the cross cultural spectrum.

Abstract:
This study compares the views of three groups of art educators - secondary, tertiary pre-service lecturers, and scholars - about the content and structure considered important in art teacher pre-service education. Items of program content and structure, as well as issues in art-teacher preparation were gleaned from the writings of selected scholars and incorporated into a survey questionnaire. The survey was distributed to secondary art educators throughout Queensland and to art pre-service lecturers throughout Australia. An analysis of the results identifies areas and degrees of agreement and difference on items both within and between groups. The study can assist the development of art teacher pre-service programmes that reflect the values of both theoreticians and practitioners of art education.

This study explores student learning in a tertiary visual arts institution. Students' conceptions of art practice are described using the phenomenologically based educational research method of phenomenography. The study addresses the intentional content of student art practice in the contexts of the visual arts institution and the status of visual arts in the 1990s. Data collection was carried out through interviews with Honours Year visual arts students, which was processed using textual analysis to examine understandings related to the visual arts.

Abstract:
The place for Charles Wheeler’s nudes in Australian art history has not been adequately gauged by art historians. He was one of Australia’s most notable painters of the nude, not perhaps because his vision was particularly inventive or original, but rather because he was an important, conservative conduit of that European tradition. Wheeler was very popular with the buying public over many decades, but success with his nudes was fundamentally a critical one. The positive response to Wheeler’s nudes, paintings which combined elements of the academic tradition and more fashionable conventions, presents an intriguing reflection on the nature of art criticism in Australia. The style of Wheeler’s discourse is indebted not only to late nineteenth century British models, as it was represented in the writings of critics such as R.A.M. Stevenson, who was primarily concerned with technique, but also to current debates about art and morality. One of the determining characteristics of this discourse was an interest in defining the limits between naked and nude. Critics were particularly concerned to protect the nude as a genre against moral attack by refusing to engage in a discussion of its sensual aspects. While the public was keen to debate the moral problems associated with the nude, the critics were anxious to avoid these issues. They felt that questions of morality were not central to artistic merit, and sensed that by engaging in discussion of this kind, the nude was on danger of being brought into disrepute.

Abstract:
Current research into the status of art in primary school education suggests that there is overwhelming support for a more vigorous approach to the artistic and creative development of children in Australian education. A recent Australian Council Report (Costantoura, 2000) into the arts in Australia found that as many as 85% of Australian adolescents and adults felt that involvement in the arts "should be an important part of the education" (p. 86) of every child. Despite such support however, there is a lack of emphasis on the creative arts in the curriculum of many Australian primary schools and there are few schools which would consider themselves particularly well-equipped with either the teaching or practical resources to facilitate a dynamic and progressive arts program. Art education is predominantly the responsibility of classroom teachers in primary schools in Australia and, while many teachers manage to provide their students with outstanding experiences in visual art, the priority assigned to the subject can vary according to the interests and skills of individual teachers and/ or school principals. How then do young recipients of a visual arts education view their involvement in the subject? Is it an important part of their education and can they explain in what ways they are able to see value (or not) in further participation in artmaking? While adults present the bulk of research, discussion, planning, and evaluation on the subject of art in education, this study considers the perspectives of a group of children aged between eight and ten years from three schools, who have elaborated broadly upon their thoughts and feelings on the subject. Although the intention of the study was to consider children's perspectives as artmakers, and the interview questions guided the information collected, pre-determined outcomes and predicted responses were not set. Collection of data was based upon (1) informal discussion and semi-structured interviews with children, (2) collection of artwork and photographic material, (3) participant observation in the classroom during art classes. Using Strauss and Corbin's (1990) approach to grounded theory, collected material was decoded and analysed, and the triangulated material was used to isolate a number of possible key issues or categories. These related to the importance of the teacher's approach to artmaking classes and the subsequent effect of this upon children's individual and general attitude to artmaking, the ramifications of using art to broaden cultural appreciation and association, and the need for increased understanding of the cognitive aspects of artmaking. The overarching outcomes emerging from the study concentrate on the value which can be attributed to the children's perspectives. What the children had to say about artmaking requires further investigation and this study provides a glimpse into what children think about art and artmaking. The key finding, and that which has formed the basis for theory building is that the children's perspectives contain significant insight and understanding that is both important and useful to educators working with them - as well as educators and researchers investigating the value and development of art in education.

In 1815 the Blue Mountains were first identified as a unique landscape when Governor Macquarie took a tour over them and located the nineteenth century principles of the Sublime and Picturesque within its' landscape. Until this time the Blue Mountains were considered to be a hostile impenetrable barrier to the West. This paper examines some of the ways the Blue Mountains has been represented in the past, and has been identified as a tourist destination through interpretations imposed on the landscape by the tourist industry since that time. The areas covered deal with the heritage of British Colonialism as a way of forming opinions about the Australian landscape. Then, the theories of the Picturesque and Sublime are examined when applied to the Blue Mountains landscape. The final chapters in this paper deal with contemporary issues that have shaped the way the tourist industry is encouraged to encounter the Blue Mountains landscape

Abstract:
This thesis is designed to investigate how art assisted in the healing process of a person suffering from a life threatening illness. The research method used is a clinical case study. This study is a form of evaluative research, a systematic data-based inquiry concerning the participant's engagement with art in her healing process, a process which unfolds as being both life affirming and spiritually enriching. This case study takes a qualitative approach, with its emphasis on the participant's own account of her behaviour. The participant is a fifty-three year old woman, a psychiatrist and psychotherapist, who was diagnosed with multiple myeloma seven years ago. Multiple myeloma is cancer of the bone marrow and blood, a medically incurable form of cancer (Mayo Clinic, 1996; Macpherson, 1995). The principles of Holistic Medicine and Arts Medicine provide the theoretical framework. Data was accumulated from multiple sources: in-depth, open-ended interviews; direct observation; video-tapes; audio-tapes; written documentation and artwork. Art therapy literature reveals a scarcity of formal evaluative research in the area of how art assists people in their healing of a life-threatening illness (Malchiodi, 1993a, l993b). This research project follows the tradition of existing studies and formally documents one person's journey. The aim is to assist in efforts to develop art interventions that will promote healing for people suffering from serious illnesses, and in many cases, those facing imminent death.

Abstract:
This PhD provides the first organized view of art therapy education in Australia. It focuses on the theories that are used in this specialized teaching and learning process. It evolved from the authors’ immersion in the field as a migrant art therapy educator to Australia from the UK and a desire to be reflexive on this experience. The research questions aimed to discover the field of art therapy education in Australia: to find out what theories and practices were taught; and where the theoretical influences were coming from, in order to develop understanding of this emerging field. Positioned as a piece of qualitative research a bricolage of methods were used to gather and analyse information from several sources (literature, institutional sources, and key participants, including the author) on the theories and practices of art therapy training programs in Australia. This also included investigating other places in the world shown to be influential (USA and UK). The bricolage approach (McLeod, 2006) included: phenomenology; hermeneutics; semi-structured interviews; practical evaluation (Patton, 1982, 1990/2002); autoethnography (Ellis & Bochner, 2000); heuristic (Moustakas, 1990); and visual methodologies (Kapitan, 2010). These were used to develop a body of knowledge in the form of institution/program profiles, educator profiles, country profiles and an autoethnographic contribution using visual processes. Epistemologically, the project is located in a paradigm of personal knowledge and subjectivity which emphasizes the importance of personal experience and interpretation. The findings contribute knowledge to support the development of art therapy education and the profession in Australia, towards the benefit, health and wellbeing of people in society. The findings show a diverse and multi-layered field of hybrid views and innovative approaches held within seven programs in the public university and private sectors. It was found that theories and practices are closely linked and that theoretical views have evolved from the people who teach the programs, location, professional contexts (health, arts, education, social, community) and the prevailing views within these contexts, which are driven by greater economic, socio-political forces and neo-liberal agendas. The university programs generally teach a range of the major theories of psychotherapy underpinned with a psychodynamic or humanistic perspective. Movement towards a more integrative and eclectic approach was found. This was linked to being part of more general masters programs and economic forces. The private sector programs are more distinctly grounded in a particular theoretical perspective or philosophical view. Key words distilled from the profiles included: conflict, transpersonal, survival through art, pedagogy, epistemology, theory driven by context and mental health. Important issues for art therapy education were identified as: the position and emphasis on art; working with the therapy/education tension; the gender imbalance in the profession; Indigenous perspectives; intercultural issues and difference. The horizons of the field revealed the importance of developing the profile of the profession, reconciling differences towards a more inclusive view and the growth of research. A trend towards opportunities in the social, education and community areas was found, driven by the increasing presence of discourses on arts and wellness.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the transformation of the exhibition catalogue in Australia, from modest exhibition documentation to autonomous publication. This discussion is largely confined to exhibition catalogues produced by Australia's public galleries between approximately1965-2002. The thesis considers why the exhibition catalogue experienced such a dramatic change in such a relatively short period. The thesis reveals how catalogues are shaped by the internal tensions and external pressures experienced by art institutions as their roles and responsibilities change over time. During the period in question, catalogues have kept track of developments in art history by experimenting with changing curatorial fashions and critical approaches. Viewed as a time series, the exhibition catalogue reveals subtle and significant clues about art in its changing institutional setting. The thesis explores the professionalisation of the public gallery network, the nexus between academic art history and the museum, and pressures affecting the management of exhibitions in Australia. Each of these factors has influenced the development of the exhibition catalogue. It is shown how catalogues possess a multiplicity of values, which are often contradictory, and how these values determine the catalogue's practical, commemorative and informative functions. To better understand the relationship between the art museum and the contexts and discourses within which art is produced and disseminated for critical appraisal, this thesis will draw upon a body of theoretical literature broadly known as the sociology of art. The work of Pierre Bourdieu provides a general theoretical framework. Methodologically, the thesis is qualitative. The massive proliferation of exhibition catalogues in Australia since the mid-1970s has meant that the samples examined are broadly representative. In this respect, the thesis has followed the examples of earlier, though less comprehensive, studies from abroad.

Abstract:
The project aims to produce an immersive video installation titled 'The Glittering City???. This project investigates contemporary cultural issues within the context of critical/specific geographical sites. These locations are the Australian coastal border, and a refugee camp near the Kenyan/Sudanese border, known as Kakuma. 'The Glittering City'is an installation that incorporates elements of video, sculpture, sound and electronics in a kinetic 2 channel immersive video and (multi-channel) audio installation. The key aims for the project are to raise awareness of the issues facing refugees and asylum seekers in relation to their sense of home. In order to accomplish this aim the research will extend upon prior research into embedded video sculptures. A subset of the key aim is to seek funding for the project. The installation is the third and final work from a trilogy of works that explores the themes journey, arrival and departure, respectively. The Glittering City is contextualised within four key areas inherent within the research practice. These key elements are 1. hybrid documentary art, 2. expanded cinema, 3. Technology and art, 4. culture and identity. Key outcomes of the research are the production and installation of The Glittering City at Campbelltown Arts Centre, May 2007. An educational program also took place at the Centre to raise awareness of the themes the installation poses. The production of a catalogue for The Glittering City is an important device for disseminating the core concepts. For the costs of making the multi-channel production, the project successfully sought grant funding from Arts NSW. This resulted in a grant through their Western Sydney I Artists' Fellowship program. The Glittering City used further funding from the Campbelltown Arts Centre to cover catalogue production, invitation design, mail out and installation costs.

Grace Crowley was one of the leading innovators of geometric abstraction in Australia. When she returned to Australia in 1930 she had thoroughly mastered the complex mathematics and geometry of the golden section and dynamic symmetry that had become one of the frameworks for modernism. Crowley, Anne Dangar and Dorrit Black all studied under the foremost teacher of modernism in Paris, André Lhote. Crowley not only taught the golden section and dynamic symmetry to Rah Fizelle, Ralph Balson and students of the Crowley-Fizelle Art School, but used it to develop her own abstract art during the 1940s and 1950s, well in advance of the arrival of colour-field painting to Australia in the 1960s. Through her teaching at the most progressive modern art school in Sydney in the 1930s Crowley taught the basic compositional techniques as she had learnt them from Lhote. When the art school closed in 1937 she worked in partnership with fellow artist, Ralph Balson as they developed their art into constructive, abstract paintings. Balson has been credited with being the most influential painter in the development of geometric abstraction in Australia for a younger generation of artists. This is largely due to Crowley’s insistence that Balson was the major innovator who led her into abstraction. She consistently refused to take credit for her own role in their artistic partnership. My research indicates that there were a number of factors that strongly influenced Crowley to support Balson and deny her own role. Her archives contain sensitive records of the breakup of her partnership with Rah Fizelle and the closure of the Crowley-Fizelle Art School. These, and other archival material, indicate that Fizelle’s inability to master and teach the golden section and dynamic symmetry, and Crowley’s greater popularity as a teacher, was the real cause of the closure of the School. Crowley left notes in her Archives that she still felt deeply distressed, even forty years after the events, and did not wish the circumstances of the closure known in her lifetime. With the closure of the Art School and her close friend Dangar living in France, her friendship with Balson offered a way forward. This thesis argues that Crowley chose to conceal her considerable mathematical and geometric ability, rather than risk losing another friend and artistic partner in a similar way to the breakup of the partnership with Fizelle. With the death of her father in this period, she needed to spend much time caring for her mother and that left her little time for painting. She later also said she felt that a man had a better chance of gaining acceptance as an artist, but it is equally true that, without Dangar, she had no-one to give her support or encourage her as an artist. By supporting Balson she was able to provide him with a place to work in her studio and had a friend with whom she could share her own passion for art, as she had done with Dangar. During her long friendship with Balson, she painted with him and gave him opportunities to develop his talents, which he could not have accessed without her. She taught him, by discreet practical demonstration the principles she had learnt from Lhote about composition. He had only attended the sketch club associated with the Crowley- Fizelle Art School. Together they discussed and planned their paintings from the late 1930s and worked together on abstract paintings until the mid-1950s when, in his retirement from house-painting, she provided him with a quiet, secluded place in which to paint and experiment with new techniques. With her own artistic contacts in France, she gained him international recognition as an abstract painter and his own solo exhibition in a leading Paris art gallery. After his death in 1964, she continued to promote his art to curators and researchers, recording his life and art for posterity. The artist with whom she studied modernism in Paris, Anne Dangar, also received her lifelong support and promotion. In the last decade of her life Crowley provided detailed information to curators and art historians on the lives of both her friends, Dangar and Balson, meticulously keeping accurate records of theirs and her own life devoted to art. In her latter years she arranged to deposit these records in public institutions, thus becoming a contributor to Australian art history. As a result of this foresight, the stories of both her friends, Balson and Dangar, have since become a record of Australian art history. This research project examines how transitional multiculturalism, cultural hybridity and transformative-repair are practiced by a professional artist-researcher and novice artists. Transitional multiculturalism and cultural hybridity are examined through a series of artworks by a Vietnamese-born artist-researcher. This series of artwork, which reflects 35 years of creating art in both Vietnamese and Australia, demonstrate a personal engagement with issues of cultural diversity, upbringing, and related aesthetic studies. The intention of this exhibition is to chart the characteristics of the artist's expression, which is culturally hybridised. This part of the study aims to identify those artistic conventions associated with specific visual traditions that have been incorporated into the artist-researcher's paintings. The main influences identified originate from both Eastern arts traditions (Viet nam, Japan and China) and Western visual arts traditions. This study also aims to identify how to use artistic conventions associated with the expression of one's culture und ancestry, which may continue to improving one's knowledge in different traditions and history across diverse aesthetic systems of hybridity. Information and understandings gained from the first part of this research will provide insigns, which will have relevance to secondary school visual arts learning areas. The transformative-repair model of multiculturalism is examined through a visual arts project conducted by secondary school students. More specifically this part of the study aims to identify principles, approaches and content for transformative repair, experiences of two students of culturally diverse hack grounds (African and Vietnamese) who are currently engaged in this culturally diverse Australian society.

This thesis is an investigation of ritual practice in the Dynamic Figure rock art of Jabiluka in Mirarr Country, Australia. Painted across western Arnhem Land, Dynamic Figure art constitutes the earliest easily recognisable body of rock art in this region of northern Australia. Despite its antiquity, its most striking attributes are the extremely detailed depictions of human figures with a plethora of material culture, that are engaged in a range of narrative scenes. This thesis explores how the material culture, scenes and other attributes of Dynamic Figure art are acutely associated with ritual and the insights this rock art provides into past ritual behaviour. The highly detailed work of Dynamic Figure artists has enabled the identification of ritual indicators derived from archaeological and anthropological investigation of ritual practice. These ritual indicators provide insights into aspects of the esoteric and actual performative forms of ritual behaviour. These detailed depictions also provide further insights into people’s lifeways, revealing evidence about society, gender, initiation and material culture during the period of Dynamic Figure art production. In this thesis, I demonstrate the value of rigorous analysis and investigation of one type of rock art from a defined study area, in contrast to previous studies in the region with broad spatial and temporal boundaries. This focused approach incorporates the multi-vocal sources available in northern Australia to consider inquiries not possible of broader studies. The Dynamic Figure art of Jabiluka demonstrates the significance of ritual places, headdresses and aspects of both continuity and discontinuity in art production in northern Australia and further highlights the significance of rock art to understand ritual practice and people’s past lifeways.

Abstract:
The analysis of the market is undertaken in both theoretical and empirical terms. The theoretical analysis finds that the dynamics of the art market are important but are difficult to formalise; the primary market is one where prices are set administratively; the secondary market, auction market, is the one where market-clearing occurs; success in the art market will come only to those artists whose works can command the same price in the secondary market as is set in the primary market; the overall market operates with considerable lags so that it may take many years before artists' work appear in the secondary market; and the dealers in the primary market play an important role as intermediaries. The results of the empirical studies carried indicate that the returns to owning art over the period, 1972-1989 have been high and higher than the returns to financial assets. The results of the Portfolio Study confirmed by the results of the resales aspect of the Auction Price Study and by examination of the performance of individual artists. The justification of public support for contemporary visual art is not very strong. Considerable doubt has been cast on the value of the proposed Droit de Suite scheme because the basis of the scheme that artists are exploited cannot be substantiated; artists have difficult in making first sales; most resales do not result in capital gains; the potential costs of a collecting scheme are substantial; and the introduction of the scheme will reduce the current demand for contemporary visual art. The criticisms of the Australia Council have been accepted as the activities of the Council work to advance the interests of artists and contribute to the oversupply in the market.

Abstract:
This creative arts project is an exploration of the benefits of an approach to visual arts education that balances the need for both formal (i.e. visual arts language, knowledge of skills, techniques and processes) and expressive content. As an artist, my tendency to focus on formal concerns can override the effective of expressive content of my artworks. I recognize the potential for my artwork to become static when the expressive elements are given insufficient consideration. Whilst acknowledging the importance of formal content an increasing awareness of the value of expression in artwork has led to a philosophical re-evaluation. This in turn has impacted upon my teaching practices as a balance between formalist and expressive approaches is pursued. This creative arts project followed an action research process where I explored ways of incorporating increasingly expressive elements in my artwork. I identified and documented evidence of change. A series of visual diaries that recorded the development of ideas accompanied the creative project, as does an exegesis. Through the research I explored whether it was possible to resolve the inherent tension between formalism and expressionism in both visual arts practice (my art work) and visual arts education (my work as an art teacher). I believe the Western Australian Curriculum Framework has sufficient scope to address the need for both formalism and expression in visual arts education. This Creative Arts Project was predicated on the belief that although The Arts Outcomes made provision for the exploration of both formal and expressive concerns, in practice the focus was on form and the production of outwardly “successful” art works. Through the research project I aimed to strike a balance where the two components of art production lent their strength to each other. This was evidenced by student achievement and increased expressive content within my own artwork.

The purpose of this thesis is to identify essential characteristics of the first generation of Romantic landscape painters and painting movements in a given English-speaking country which followed the generation of Turner, Constable and Martin in England, and then trace how the second generation of Romantic-realist painters represents a different paradigm. For a paradigmatic construct of the first generation, the focus is on the lives and major works of the American arch-Romantic landscape painter Thomas Cole (1801--1848) and the Australian Romantic landscape painter Conrad Martens (1801--1878). The second generation model features the American Frederic Edwin Church (1826--1900), the Australian William Charles Piguenit (1836--1914), and the British Canadian Lucius Richard O'Brien (1832--1899). Cole and Martens, closer to their predecessors in England, created dynamic paradigm shifts in their new countries. Following them, the second generation of Romantic-realists produced a synthesis of romanticism, scientific naturalism, and nationalistic symbolism.

This exegesis provides a theoretical background that supports and accommodates the Artist-Researcher's exhibition and visual diary. Efland's, (1990) Expressive Psychoanalytic model, reinforces the notion that through creating, individuals construct their experiences through the making processes. This self-responding approach focuses on emotionally centred expression, fusing the practical with feelings about relationships. The exegesis underscores the essential therapeutic role of visual arts in education. The Artist-Researcher's exhibition centres upon a personal exploration of her adolescent years in London, when she dealt with a complex family break up. She combines studio practise, personal text and computer graphics to reconstruct childhood experiences by confronting her parent's marriage break down. This selfanalytical approach provides the underlying function for the exhibition. The work examines a personal context for an application into teaching. Through self-discovery and reconstruction, she develops the basis for a teaching tool for middle year male students to gain confidence in expressing complex emotional issues.

Afin de restituer le milieu créatif de Marianne Stokes, des textes et des manuels d’histoire de l’art ancien et actuel furent étudiés. D’autres recherches furent entreprises, appuyées sur la correspondance d’artistes camarades de Marianne Stokes, et sur l’étude de leur accueil critique en France et en Angleterre. Des publications de l’époque sont au centre de ces recherches : autobiographie, narration de voyage, et correspondance. This dissertation recreates the evolution of Marianne Stokes’ art within the context of her artistic milieu from 1880 to the turn of the century. These studies concern first her early school years in Munich and Paris, and then her years among artist colonies in France, Denmark and England. Stokes’ paintings are compared to those of her contemporaries within the artist colonies. Contemporary texts, such as travel journals, biographies, letters and press articles, are used to accurately reconstruct the artist’s milieu. This thesis demonstrates that Marianne Stokes’ body of work cannot be reduced to a specific artistic movement; instead, the style of her paintings ranges from naturalist, decorative, and impressionist to symbolist. Nevertheless, the paintings of Marianne Stokes maintain one distinctive trait; they express a certain silence, an articulation of the artist’s personal piety

The study examines the role of visual art works in primary education. This involves three levels of investigation. Level 1 examines the role of these art works in the main philosophies of visual arts education; Level 2 examines the role of visual art works in the Western Australia Art and Crqft K-7 Syllabus; and Level 3 examines visual arts primary specialist teachers' perceptions of the role of visual art works in their teaching programmes. The purpose is to establish the relationships between these three levels of analysis so as to contribute towards an explanation of the disparity between the high commitment towards the use of art works at the level of curriculum framework, and the apparently minimal use of visual art works in classroom art teaching. The first level of analysis deals with the role assigned to the use of visual art [unreadable] four major philosophical theories of art education, namely: hand-eye training, child-centred art education, discipline-based art education (DBAE), and contextualist art education. The second level of analysis examines the influences of this theoretical debate on the structure of the Western Australian Art and Crafts Syllabus K-7, and also examines attempts to implement policy regarding the use of visual art works in schools. This is based on an examination of the relevant curricula documents, and interviews with four art educators involved in curriculum development The third level of analysis is based on interviews with visual arts primary specialist teachers. Paul Rebeyrolle est connu pour être méconnu, reconnu, toujours, comme un excellent peintre, loué par certains comme l’un des plus importants de la période, en France, mais demeure réduit à la portion congrue de l’histoire de l’art contemporain français, lorsque celle-ci juge bon de le mentionner. Il a pourtant bénéficié d’un succès précoce, dans les années 1950, dans le sillage d’un Bernard Lorjou ou, surtout, d’un Bernard Buffet, avant de subir un désaveu équivalent. Un marchand aussi important qu’Aimé Maeght et des préfaciers aussi renommés que J.-P. Sartre ou M. Foucault n’y auront rien changé. The way they’ve been retained by Art historiography, Paul Rebeyrolle’s work and his carreer (1945-2005) appear to be problematic beyond this strict definition, factual basis for an hypothetical encyclopedia entry : what defines a French painter under the 4th and 5th republics ? Paul Rebeyrolle is well-knowed for being under-estimated, always acknowledged as a great painter, sometimes even praised as one of the most important painters of that period, in France, but still limited to the smallest share of the French history of contemporary art, when this one finds it appropriate to mention it.Yet he benefited of an early success, during the 50’s, in the wake of painters such as Bernard Lorjou and especially Bernard Buffet, before enduring a similar disavowal. An art dealer as important as Aimé Maeght and preface writers as renowned as Jean-Paul Sartre or Michel Foucault didn’t make any difference. Thus, he appears to be paradigmatic of an entire part of French art which, under the 5th republic and its cultural policy, seems to have been downgraded for a certain number of reasons that still needs to be evaluated : aesthetic disagreements, plastic discords, denial inherited from the abstract and figurative painters’ quarrel, unsaid things about the artist’s political commitment, art critics’ vagueness and preconceived opinions, journalistic frivolity fond of clichés... 'The possibilities that the technology can offer are seemingly endless and remain to be fully explored in [visual] art education." (Callow. 2001. p,43) The aim of this research is to investigate whether the integration of Visual Arts Technology Tools (TECH-TOOLS) into Traditional Visual Arts Programs (TRAD-['ROG) enhance the students' learning in terms of Arts Ideas (AI) and Arts Skills and Processes (ASP) and whether it is a cost effective option for Western Australian primary schools. To determine whether it is worth the inclusion of TECH-TOOLS in terms of enhancing learning. this research will statistically state whether the combination of TECH-TOOLS and Traditional Visual Arts Media (TRAD-MEDIA) enhance the expressive outcomes of Year Seven boys' artwork. The comparative case study method has been chosen as the most suitable method to enable the Researcher to establish the impact that combining TECH-TOOLS with TRAD-MEDIA have upon Year Seven boys' artwork. The Control group only used TRAD-MEDIA and the Experimental group used both TRAD-MEDIA and TECH-TOOLS to create a piece of artwork based on the chosen theme, Character Cars. There were 23 students in the Control group and 24 students in the Experimental group, however not all students attempted or completed the task for reasons which will be explained in Chapter Four. Each group was involved in three sequenced activities based on the chosen theme, with the second activity varying only according to the media used to complete the task. Combinations of quantitative and qualitative methods have been used in this research. To present quantitative data which provides insights into whether Visual Arts (VA) teachers should be combining TECH-TOOLS with TRAD-MEDIA in their Visual Arts Programs (VAP), each piece of artwork was assessed and analysed using descriptive analysis of the data. Each participant completed a written feedback form outlining their attitudes, feelings and thoughts about their artwork and the media that they used. The Researcher and an independent Visual Arts Education (V AE) expert also took anecdotal records during the VA activities with the aim of recording the participants' involvement and enjoyment of the activities. This study is significantly different from the current research in this area u!; it will: provide quantitative data which will demonstrate Whether the combination of TECH-TOOLS and TRAD-MEDlA enhances students' artwork; link the relevant literature and findings of this study to the Western Australian primary school context; provide links to the Western Australian Curriculum Council's Curriculum Framework; and comment on the influence of gender in VAE. All of these factors contribute to the uniqueness of this study.

Visual arts history and criticism occupy central positions in visual arts curriculum statements in Western Australia. This status is sustained by the belief that the study of visual arts history and criticism actively contributes to the education of the student as a "whole person". In reality however, rather than attending to the holistic education of students, the application of visual arts history and criticism in Western Australian schools tends to be pragmatic and instrumental - visual arts teachers often use visual art works as "learning aids" because they don't have time, interest or experience in dealing with visual arts works in any other way. While visual arts history and criticism offer the student a valuable life-skill worth acquiring for the contribution they could make to the student's autonomy and personal welfare, this understanding often seems a foreign concept for many classroom teachers. The difference between theorists' and teachers' understandings of the place and purpose of visual arts history and criticism provides an important area of inquiry requiring urgent attention. This research makes a foray into this domain with the purpose of shedding light on the content and methods used by middle school visual arts teachers and their students' perceptions of the content and methods. A qualitative descriptive study was selected for the research taking the form of semi-structured interviews with six teachers. An interview guide was used and transcripts deriving from this methodology were coded by way of reference to the original research questions and classifications which emanated from emergent themes. The teacher interviews were complemented by a questionnaire administered to one class of students from each of the six schools. Participating teachers were selected through a stratified sampling technique. Analysis of data was undertaken from a qualitative stance in the case of interview participants. Narrative-style reporting of interview content was employed to facilitate accurate representation of the teachers' perceptions of visual arts history and criticism at the middle school level. A quantitative analysis of students' questionnaires provided triangulation of methodology, ensuring greater levels of validity than would be afforded by qualitative methods alone. With pressure being applied by the impending implementation of the Curriculum Framework for Kindergarten to Year 12 Education in Western Australian Schools (1998) for the formal inclusion of Arts Responses (aesthetics, art criticism) and Arts in Society (art history), a pressing need exists for clear information about current professional practice. Findings indicated that a misalignment appears to exist between theoretical assumptions embedded in documentation supporting the implementation of the Framework and actual classroom teaching practice. The implications of such misalignment, albeit illustrated on a small scale, are that the initiatives of the Framework may not be sustainable in the longer term, precisely because they are built upon invalid assumptions about what teachers actually do. Whilst the size of the sample and scope of the research limits the generalisability of findings, this first foray may provide impetus for a more comprehensive and evaluative study at a later date.

Abstract:
Mulka's Cave is a profusely decorated hollow boulder at The Humps, a large granite dome near Hyden, a small town 350 km southeast of Perth. The importance of the artwork has been recognised for 50 years. Test excavations in the cave in 1988 yielded 210 mainly quartz artefacts assignable to the Australian Small Tool phase and a radiocarbon date of 420 ± 50 BP from just below the lowest artefact found. The artwork was recorded in detail in 2004. The recorder considered the radiocarbon date to be 'anomalously young' because most of the artwork is in poor condition, suggesting that it was made 3000-2000 years ago. Other dated rock art sites in Southwestern Australia came into use 4000-3000 BP. The excavators argued that the site was fairly insignificant, while the rock art researcher thought the profusion of motifs (452) made it a site of some significance, particularly in Southwestern Australia. The main aim of this study was to investigate these conflicting claims by re-investigating how Mulka's Cave had been used by Aboriginal people in the archaeological past. This research became possible because local tourist organisations obtained federal funding to install an elevated walkway outside the cave in 2006. Under Section 18 of the Aboriginal Heritage Act (1972) 12 of the 34 postholes required were excavated and artefacts were collected from all the ground surfaces to be impacted. Subsequently, under Section 16 of the AHA, four, small, 0.5 x 0.5 m, testpits were excavated around the site: outside the cave entrance, on The Humps and in the Camping Area; a sheltered spot where the Traditional Owners had camped as children, with their grandparents. Organic material was scarce, so analysis focused on the numbers and types of stone artefacts recovered. The artefacts excavated in 1988 were also re-analysed. Five radiocarbon dates were obtained, which suggested that people began visiting the Camping Area (and using ochre) about 6500 BP, making Mulka's Cave one of the oldest radiometrically dated rock art sites in southern Western Australia. The artefact data from Mulka's Cave were compared to those from these sites. The low artefact discard rate and high proportion of retouched/formal tools found at Mulka's Cave may indicate that the site was used differently from the other sites, but the data are problematic. Most (70%) of the handstencils in Mulka's Cave can be attributed to adolescents, possibly boys, which may also suggest that the site had ceremonial significance; perhaps as a focus for male initiation rituals. The artefact data do not support this hypothesis, however. There is no evidence of spatial patterning in artefact type or frequency across the site, which would be expected if the cave had had a ritual function. Instead, the Camping Area, Walkway Area and Mulka's Cave itself seem to have been used similarly. It was concluded that, given the scarcity of free-standing potable water in the surrounding region and the presence at The Humps of two capacious gnammas (rockholes), that people probably visited the site when the gnammas were full. A wide variety of plant and animal foods would also have been available before the country was cleared for agriculture. When at Mulka's Cave, they may well have added to the corpus of rock art and carried out other ceremonial business, but there is no archaeological evidence for the latter. It was also concluded that much more research needs to be undertaken in this neglected part of the semi-arid zone before the significance of Mulka's Cave can be properly assessed and its place in the archaeological record of Southwestern Australia determined.

Abstract:
This study traces the adaptation of the traditional gathering practices of Anglo/Celtic women to the landscape of Colonial Australia, thus developing a context for contemporary land-based art practices. Traditional gathering practices became one of the important forces that influenced and shaped the work of many women artists in post colonial Australia. Interacting with the landscape on a personal level helped contextualize women's gathering role into a contemporary theme, which linked past knowledge to present day voices. The author's art work is an interpretation of this traditional gathering practice. By relating herbal knowledge to present day concerns, she is able to extend the knowledge of past generations of women gatherers into present day images. The art work is also a diary of experiments, that are concerned with preserving the dye making recipes that have been handed down for generations. These botanical experiments have enabled the author to re-present herbal knowledge that took hundreds of years to glean, and to extend the use of the dyes obtained to create the art works.

Few concurrent literary movements have offered such divergent philosophies of art as did British aestheticism and American naturalism at the turn of the twentieth century. American naturalist writers defined their work through direct opposition to what they saw as the 'literary,' and therefore 'feminine,' qualities cherished by an American intellectual establishment dominated by the principles of aestheticism. In this dissertation, I examine the work of specific naturalist authors in order to demonstrate how this opposition contributes to the shaping of an artistic sensibility which relies upon a remarkably unstable conception of the artist I locate the naturalist artistic sensibility within the context of the volatile cultural climate of the 1890s and the perceived 'crisis in masculinity' that concerned American society. This work investigates the transformation of the cultural tensions arising from ideologies of race, class, and gender into an aesthetic perspective which adopts the language of 'masculinity' as a metaphorical tool to redefine the idea of authorship. I focus on a group of writers, including Stephen Crane, Frank Norris, Jack London, Edith Wharton, and James Weldon Johnson, whose texts are unified by a common concern with the issues of masculinity and artistry. The male-dominated realm of Crane's, London's, and Norris's fiction reflects the authors' investment in the 'bachelor culture' of the late nineteenth century, while the novels of Wharton and Johnson articulate ideas seemingly at odds with the dominant ideology of America at the turn of the century and the very concept of American 'masculinity' itself. Each author, however, attempts to redefine literature as an active, vital enterprise within the gender-based confines of progressive-era American culture. This problematic and persistent connection between masculinity and aesthetics in turn-of-the-century naturalist texts illuminates a significant relationship between the naturalist tradition and a continuing twentieth-century American literary preoccupation

Abstract:
This research involved an examination of landscape art, the nexus of art and landscape architecture, within a rural Australian context. Four completed landscape art projects from different regions of the country were selected as case studies, and through a methodology of layering data to create a matrix of physical, social and cultural, and design factors, the case studies were analysed and compared to identify commonalities and differences. The influence on the design outcome by diverse factors such as climate, landform, community profile, local history, and the methodologies employed during project planning and implementation was examined. The process of community consultation and participation was seen as particularly important in this context, so was examined in depth. The Design Practice Methodology developed by Fifth Creek Studio, who specialise in landscape architecture, public art and urban design, was combined with Action Research, Heuristics and other methodologies to form the basis of the thesis methodology. This was supported by oral histories, interviews and a questionnaire with case study participants. The analysis and synthesis of complex and interwoven aspects of landscape art projects in rural communities provides the basis from which to formulate a design framework for future landscape art projects.

Abstract:
In researching this topic, I have developed chapters on a History of Taste in Australia (as related to Asia), incorporating discussion of the late-nineteenth century art movements of Chinoiserie, Japonisme and Aestheticism (chapters 1 to 3). Chapters 4, 5, 6 and 7 focus on particular visual and cultural phenomena throughout Australia which are correlated to these movements, and are largely documented from primary sources. As an overview of the growth and content of Asian collections within Australia, chapter 8 presents a national view - from the founding of private colonial collections through to the establishment and development of state museum collections. The concluding chapter draws together social and cultural themes with particular emphasis on Australia's intercultural relationship with Japan. Further investigation into Asian cultural interchange with Australia from the 1930s is mandatory to extend this to the present. Although references are made to the cultures of China, Japan and Southeast Asia, for a variety of reasons it was Japan which was to play the most important role in shaping cultural exchange with Australia. Australia's geographic position, almost due south of the great land and island masses known as the 'East' induced an access with the possibility of trade, the exchange of persons, and the importation of cultural artefacts. I gratefully acknowledge select data on museum collections; specific information was provided by a numerically small, but dedicated group of curators responsible for Asian collections throughout Australia. Their assistance has been invaluable in compiling histories of the major state collections.

Aboriginal arts practices in the southeast of Australia have, since the early years of colonisation, been rarely considered within the realm of authentic Aboriginal arts practices. Such attitudes were a reflection of the colonial encounter and associated attempts to assimilate the Aboriginal population with the White. This thesis explores Aboriginal arts practices and asserts that there has always been Aboriginal art in the southeast and that, despite the overwhelming effects of colonisation, the work of Aboriginal artists provides a distinct and definite counter-history to that endorsed by the dominant culture. Using published historical and contemporary accounts and recent interviews from Aboriginal artists and arts workers, this thesis investigates the continuation of the knowledge and practice of southeast Australian Aboriginal art and its connection to culture, identity and wellbeing. It explores the corresponding adaptations and changes to these practices as Aboriginal people contended with the ever-expanding European occupation of the region from 1834 onwards.
This project adopted a collaborative research methodology, where members of the Aboriginal arts community were consulted throughout the project in order to develop a study which had meaning and value for them. The collaborative approach combined an analysis of historical data along with the stories collected from participants. By privileging the Aboriginal voice as legitimate primary source material, alternative ways of exploring the history of Aboriginal art were possible. Although the story of Aboriginal art in the southeast is also one of tensions and paradoxes, where changes in arts practices frequently positioned art, like the people themselves, outside the domain of the ‘real’, the findings of this project emphasise that arts practices assist people with connecting and in some cases reconnecting with their communities. Aboriginal art in the southeast is an assertion of identity and wellbeing and reflects the dynamic nature of Aboriginal culture in southeast Australia.
