Abstract:
In our country the number of people who suffer from chronic sicknesses increase each year. The available drug therapies on the market are not showing efficiency in the results against this sicknesses. Moreover, they produce a big quantity of side effects by its intake or supply, which means to develop less harmful solutions for the health that improves the life quality of patients. In the same way, the support of the family and friends is important to accompany in the in the mourning (the approval of the sickness and changes that will produce in the daily life) and that is why for some “primary caregivers” need the appropriate accompaniment to get to cope and overcome these adverse situations that affect their quality of life. The consumer demand for cannabis oil is on the rise given to the great benefits that have on the treatment of sicknesses such as cancer, epilepsy, and degenerative diseases. Nowadays in Peru, there are no specialized drugstores for the dispensation of cannabis oil that offer a proven traceability and in many cases the black market must be resorted to access this Oleo. The proposal for natural products called “Vida Natural” is to offer cannabis oil in different concentrations, 4%, 10%, and 15% with quality and traceability proven. Abstract:
This dissertation focuses on the Natural Transition Space and how the natural component, when integrated in models of compact cities, can contribute to a sustainable development of cities. The growth of urban areas is closely related to the processes of settlement of people in cities, induced by the constant changes that mankind has undergone throughout the ages. However, this urban growth has not always occurred according to a careful urban planning, which resulted in the development of cities increasingly deprived of their identity, uncompacted and diluted in the territory, full of breaches, obstacles and bleak wastelands. This situation brings with it several mobility issues, air pollution and consumption, not only of energy and resources, but also of time. The basic premise of this project is to inhibit the phenomenon of urban sprawl, which has been growing over the past decades, while defending the idea of urban compactness, densification and upgrading. This dissertation recommends the construction of models of compact cities that, not only favour the proximity of residential, working, educational, cultural and leisure areas, but also integrate the natural component into the structure of the city in such a way that it will not be considered a disruptive element but a Natural Transition Space. We support the idea that this could be a possible path to a more sustainable future of the cities of tomorrow, where the population will be able to fully achieve a standard of living that matches its needs and expectations.

Abstract:
This research explores the discursive formations involved in two environmental conflicts during which organisations were not permitted to carry out their proposed extractive activities. The conflicts were based on the West Coast of the South Island in New Zealand. The first involved sustainable native logging and the second was over the siting and extension of a gold mine. Extensive archival and media searches were carried out to generate data on the conflicts. Interviews were also conducted to investigate the community position in more depth. The discourse theory of Laclau and Mouffe (2001 [1985]) is drawn upon as a framework to make sense of the conflicts. This framework was particularly useful as it enabled a close and careful examination of the antagonisms and addressed some of the ideological and power concerns with stakeholder analysis. The analysis involved identifying nodal points, subjectivity, subject positions and floating signifiers, which enabled certain hegemonic constructions. The two conflicts were considerably different. The hegemonic constructions were quite similar and the notion of being green emerged as an antagonism that was at the heart of the conflicts and a key to understanding why these business organisations were unsuccessful. That is, who or what is given meaning as being green negates and de-legitimates other activity that is not deemed to be green. In these conflicts business organisations extracting natural resources and subjects supporting these organisational activities could not be green - when being green was constituted in terms of the clean green discourse operating economically and socially within New Zealand (see Bell, 1996). Consequently, not being green was deemed to be outside of what we see as New Zealanders as being important and thus should not occur in this country. This research has implications for business organisations in New Zealand dealing with greening issues, especially as external stakeholders can have considerable influence on organisational activities. Theoretically it argues for a discursive approach to organisational stakeholder analysis in order to address power and subjectivity and for the organisation and natural environment literature to recognise the possibility of multiple meanings of nature. In particular, this thesis contributes to current organisation studies literature by explicitly focusing on nature as a concept. It shows that the meaning attributed to nature is a political process which can have consequences for preventing or enabling significant business organisational activities.

Abstract:

Abstract:
There seems to be enough information available on how different types of radiation may affect human health. There also seems to be adequate research made about NORM and how to handle this phenomenon. The image put forth by this study shows that the appearance of NORM within affected industries do not appear surprising or difficult to deal with. On the contrary it seems to be a well-known issue and safety measures have been adapted accordingly. It appears as if these issues have been overlooked regarding the systems where LNG is being used as a marine fuel. There is not enough data to conclude whether NORM is an issue or not in such systems.

Abstract:
Natural Cosmopolitics presents a spacepower theory that is designed to help policy makers and strategists understand what spacepower is and how states can use it to their benefit. What is offered is a holistic treatment of spacepower that includes the security, civil, and commercial space sectors. It shows how states can employ spacepower as another element of national power in the pursuit of security, prestige, and wealth. Unlike other attempts to produce a spacepower theory that draw on analogies to airpower, seapower, or groundpower, natural cosmopolitics traces its roots from the Big Bang forward. Discussions include the evolution of the Universe, space itself, the solar system, life on Earth, the current state system, and contemporary geopolitics within international relations. Spacepower is presented as a natural outcome of these evolutionary forces, strategically the same as the practice of power in the other operating environments, because the same political processes with the same motivations drive it. It is shown that the advent of spacepower has ushered in a revolution in strategic perspective. The global perspective of the Columbian Epoch is fading away as humanity comes to appreciate the Earth as a tiny little planet in a modest solar system in a Universe that may be filled with more galaxies than people. From this, general and specific principles of natural cosmopolitics are presented along with an analytical tool to help strategists anticipate how other states may respond with spacepower to various stimuli. The role of spacepower in both war and peace is also discussed. Finally, the threat of catastrophic asteroid impacts is analysed and the hypothesis is tested that states will cooperate to provide a planetary defence.

This project was carried out in Metropolitan Lima at SES (Socioeconomic status) "A" and “B”. We adopted a main focus on consumers with digital profiles that seek for dynamism in their purchases. This business model is attractive, since we see there are consumers willing to improve their diet and adopt a healthier lifestyle, but they do not find a place that provides a unified offer of everything they are looking for. Taking advantage that there are few options in the market where the interaction between suppliers and demanders is dynamic, we created Natural Club. Abstract:
"Natural Disasters" is a cycle of five extractable movements for septet, conductor and computer. Each movement in the cycle is inspired by the ways that humans are affected by and respond to five different classes or categories of natural disasters: meteorological, such as hurricanes, tornados, and haboobs; geological, like earthquakes and landslides; hydrological, including flooding and sea level rise; wildfires; and extra-planetary disasters such as meteors and solar flares. The disaster types are used as overarching themes and also as sources for the organization of the movements and their surface details. This paper presents an overview of the conception and organization of cycle, the themes addressed in each movement and the compositional techniques used. The history of composers using weather or disaster-related themes in prior music is reviewed, and a survey of contemporary disaster-related compositions is presented.

The proposed “natural crutch” provides ambulation assistance without the problems associated with arm-supported crutches. The new crutch has an exoskeleton structure which surrounds the disabled leg and carries the user's body weight while walking and standing. The load is transferred from the exoskeleton to the trunk of the body through a harness which lifts the pelvis on the impaired side. The intention is to simulate the internal skeleton’s natural load distribution while compensating for the impairment. The crutch design is presented as a unique concept with an outlined proposal for a marketable prototype. Results of a full scale simulator test are used to determine areas requiring further development. All aspects of design attempt to include both engineering and industrial design perspectives.

Nature never ceases to amaze me with momentary observations of fluid energy: the purposeful curvature of a blue heron's neck; the pattern of water as it sweeps across a rock sculpted by that very motion; the changing light and shadows created as wind blows through tall grasses. The spark of beauty in these moments lies in the energy that causes this constant change. To capture this energy, either potential or kinetic, and embody it through textures and flow of mass, is my essential goal as an artist.

My thesis work is about imagination. I use the collaborative efforts of the viewer's mind and my sculptures, or specimens, to make associations of real life animals. I feel this engages the viewer and in turn invites them to inspect the work on closer level. This is my ultimate goal in the work, to take hold of the viewer's curiosity and have them examine the work on a closer level.

Abstract:
The research herein relates to the development and ideology behind the creative piece Natural Habitat, and is concerned with exploring effective narrative techniques. The goal of this research is to provide a methodology towards creating effective narrative in the medium of hypertext by developing a better understanding of how narrative functions. The research explores the social and cognitive elements of narrative, and the manner in which structure impacts the understanding and development of narrative. The genre boundaries of medium and content are explored to gain an understanding of reader preference and expectation. The concept of reader expectation is then applied to multiform narrative in order to understand its functionality, before the question of effective combination of these elements is raised in regards to the medium of hypertext. This methodology is then implemented in the piece Natural Habitat, testing the merit of this approach in the resulting work of fiction. Natural Habitat is a story describing the journey four friends make through the Amazon jungle after surviving a plane crash. Isolated and in a hostile environment, the four survivors find themselves slipping into surreal worlds that seem futuristic, fantastic, horrific, and tinged with noir. Some begin to question their sanity, while others adapt to their environs readily, but each faces their darker side as the fears in their minds begin to play out on the landscape around them. Fighting to survive, their only chance is to find each other and to conquer their inner demons. The story is both the exploration and implementation of the arguments of the thesis, with the research guiding the construction of the story from planning, through initial writings and up to the final presentation. Natural Habitat itself is presented as a traditional novel and a piece of hypertext, facilitating comparative analysis between the two mediums.

Abstract:
Scholars have become increasingly aware of the need to understand the religious context of early modern natural philosophy. Despite some great strides in relating certain areas of Christian doctrine to the study of the natural world, the category ‘natural theology’ has often been subject to anachronism and misunderstanding. The term itself is difficult to define; it is most fruitful to think of natural theology as the answer to the question, ‘what can be known about God and religion from the contemplation of the natural world?’ There have been several erroneous assumptions about natural theology – in particular that it only consisted of rational proofs for the existence of God, that it was ecumenical in outlook, and that it was defined as strictly separate from Scriptural revelation. These assumptions are shown to be uncharacteristic of the late-sixteenth and early-seventeenth century. The study of natural theology needs to be better integrated into three contexts – the doctrinal, confessional, and chronological. Doctrinally, natural theology does not stand alone but needs to be understood within the context of the theology of revelation, justification, and the effects of the Fall. These doctrines make such a material difference that scholars always ought to delineate clearly between the threefold state of man (original innocence, state of sin, state of grace) when approaching the topic of ‘natural’ knowledge of God. Confessionally, scholars need to recognise that the doctrine of natural theology received different treatments on either side of the sectarian divide. In Catholicism, for instance, there were considerable spiritual benefits of natural theology for the non-Christian, while in Protestantism its benefits were restricted to those saved Christians who possessed Scriptural insight. Chronologically, natural theology does not remain uniform throughout the history of Christian theology but, being subject to changes occasioned by philosophical and theological faddism and development, needs to be considered within a particular locus. Research here focuses on late sixteenth-century orthodoxy as defined in confessional and catechismal literature (which has been generally understudied), and demonstrates its application in a number of case-studies. This thesis begins the work of putting natural theology into these three contexts. An improved understanding of natural theology, with more rigorous and accurate terminology and better nuanced appreciation of confessional differences, makes for a better framework in which to consider the theological context of early modern natural philosophy.

Costello, Graham John. "Natural Law and Natural Rights in Nineteenth Century Britain." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/10168.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis challenges the view of many historians that the natural law and natural rights tradition, while flourishing in the Enlightenment period, disappeared in nineteenth-century Britain with the expansion of the role of positive law, only to reappear post-World War II in human rights discourse. The focus of historians of political thought on canonical figures, Jeremy Bentham, John Austin, and John Stuart Mill, all of whom were antagonistic to the natural law and rights tradition has led them to fail to appreciate not only the continued role of natural law and rights but its development of a post-Enlightenment accommodation with positive law, resulting in a more pragmatic understanding of natural law. The examination of non-canonical figures who were nevertheless important in their time reveals the continued role of natural law as positive law expanded. The thesis is developed through the analysis of figures in areas where natural law was significant: Jurisprudence; the Law of Nations or International Law; and Spiritual Life. Jurisprudence was the area in which theorists of natural law mounted direct opposition to the theories of Jeremy Bentham, John Austin, and John Stuart Mill. The writers investigated include Charles Foster, an early nineteenth century proponent of natural law through his writings and lectures; the Scotsman, James Lorimer, writer and lecturer on jurisprudence and law of nations; and the Irish Catholic lawyer Denis Caufeild Heron. In International Law the advocates of natural law theory were Robert Phillimore, judge of the High Court of Admiralty; Travers Twiss and George Bowyer as civil lawyers; and James Lorimer. Writers on Natural Law in Spiritual Life, included Henry Drummond, lecturer and ecclesiast; George Combe, phrenologist; and John Seeley, historian; who were in conflict with churchmen over the church’s exclusive right to interpret religious teaching and the appropriate relationship between natural law and religion.

Puniani, Evaloni Takavaha. "Novel natural product based anti-anxiety therapy and natural insecticides." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/29155.

Full text
Abstract:
The EtOH extracts of the leaves of Margraviaceae, a relatively rare Central American vine for which ethnobotanical reports suggested possible anti-anxiety properties, showed significant anti-anxiety activity in animal models for anxiety. Subsequent bioassay-guided fractionation of these extracts yielded an EtOAc active fraction (f1). Further bioassay-directed chromatography of (f1), led to the isolation of betulinic acid (3) as the bioactive constituent in 0.01% of dry weight. Six known pentacyclic triterpenoids [( 1a), (1b), (2a), (2b), ( 4), (5a)], six known flavonoids [(6), ( 7), (8a), (8b), (9), ( 10)], chondrillasterol (11), linolenic acid (12 ) and a porphyrin type compound (13) were also isolated. When (3) was administered at 0.5 mg per kg (possibly less) in a variety of rat and mouse model assays, the activity of (3) was comparable to that of Valium, the most famous member of the benzodiazepines family. Synthetic derivatives of (3) were prepared and evaluated for anti-anxiety activity. Several of the simple esters appear to have ideal properties as new drug Candidates. In particular, betulinic acid methyl ester or methyl betulinate (3a) exhibited anti-anxiety activity superior to (3). The activity profile of (3a) is such that (3a) can be considered a viable drug candidate. An excellent relay synthesis of (3) from another closely related natural product betulin (14), that is abundantly available in Eastern Ontario, was developed. Radioactive 3H-labelled betulinic acid methyl ester ( 3a″) was also prepared in order to facilitate identification of relevant anti-anxiety receptors and the mechanism of action of the compound. This is important since (3) showed no significant binding to any of the 40 anti-anxiety receptors currently implicated in anxiety. Therefore, it appears to act as an anti-anxiety agent via a new mode of action.* In a second project, the active components of a member of the Piperaceae or Pepper family (P. tuberculatum) from Costa Rica, were isolated and their structures characterized as 5,6-dihydropiperlonguminine (25), 5,6-dihydropiperine (26), piperine ( 27) and piperlonguminine (28). Extracts from this neotropical plant had been previously demonstrated by our biology collaborators, Professor Arnason's group, to be strongly insecticidal towards a variety of pests including mosquitoes, earwigs and white grubs. Moreover, the P. tuberculatum extracts were as effective as the well-documented Asian (P. nigrum) and African ( P. guineense) Piper species. Piperamides (25)--(28) were synthesized in sufficient amounts to allow extensive evaluation of their insecticidal properties. Experiments with these piperamides showed that the tertiary and quaternary mixtures have greater-than-additive toxicity compared to single compounds or binary mixtures. That is, these piperamides synergize each other. Compound (25) was the most acutely toxic in mosquito larvae bioassays. The field trials to date indicate a high potential for the development of an effective, relatively inexpensive botanically based insecticide. Radioactive 3H-labelled piperine (27″ ) was also synthesized for toxicokinetic studies. *Please refer to dissertation for diagrams.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to examine if natural elements would act as identity markers and affect workplace attitudes. Specifically, the study hypothesized that a workplace environment that possessed natural elements such as natural lighting, potted plants and pictures of nature, would cause job applicants to report higher levels of organizational attractiveness and job pursuit intentions after a workplace tour of the organization. It was also hypothesized that enjoyment of nature would moderate the effect of the natural elements on these workplace attitudes. When tested with a 2x2 MANOVA, one hypothesis was supported and showed natural elements in the workplace can affect a job applicant’s organizational attraction. Implications, limitations and future research are discussed.

Abstract:
As unconventional drilling has emerged as a major industry in the US and around the world, many environmental health and pollution risks have surfaced. One emerging concern is the risk of environmental contamination arising from unconventional wastes that are enriched in naturally-occurring radioactive materials (NORM). Although NORM has been a well-documented contaminant of oil and gas wastes for decades, there are new challenges associated with unconventional drilling. This thesis discusses several of these challenges, focusing on NORM from black shale formations. Chapter 1 provides background information on environmental radioactivity and unconventional drilling. Chapter 2 describes the potential for NORM to migrate into groundwater around unconventional drilling operations. Chapters 3 and 4 describe radiochemical methods developed for the analysis of Marcellus Shale unconventional drilling wastes. Chapter 5 describes environmental partitioning of Marcellus Shale unconventional drilling wastes. Collectively, this thesis attempts to broaden the scientific understanding of NORM in unconventional drilling wastes so that potential environmental impacts may be mitigated.

Bobick, Aaron F. "Natural Object Categorization." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/6964.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses the problem of categorizing natural objects. To provide a criteria for categorization we propose that the purpose of a categorization is to support the inference of unobserved properties of objects from the observed properties. Because no such set of categories can be constructed in an arbitrary world, we present the Principle of Natural Modes as a claim about the structure of the world. We first define an evaluation function that measures how well a set of categories supports the inference goals of the observer. Entropy measures for property uncertainty and category uncertainty are combined through a free parameter that reflects the goals of the observer. Natural categorizations are shown to be those that are stable with respect to this free parameter. The evaluation function is tested in the domain of leaves and is found to be sensitive to the structure of the natural categories corresponding to the different species. We next develop a categorization paradigm that utilizes the categorization evaluation function in recovering natural categories. A statistical hypothesis generation algorithm is presented that is shown to be an effective categorization procedure. Examples drawn from several natural domains are presented, including data known to be a difficult test case for numerical categorization techniques. We next extend the categorization paradigm such that multiple levels of natural categories are recovered; by means of recursively invoking the categorization procedure both the genera and species are recovered in a population of anaerobic bacteria. Finally, a method is presented for evaluating the utility of features in recovering natural categories. This method also provides a mechanism for determining which features are constrained by the different processes present in a multiple modal world.

Abstract:
Montbretins A-E were isolated from the corms of Crocosmia sp., an invasive perennial plant. The montbretins are inhibitors of human pancreatic α-amylase (HPA). Montbretin A (2- 30) is a competitive inhibitor of HPA with a K₁ of 1.3 nM. The activity of the other family members varied significantly and provided structure-activity information. Saturation Transfer Difference (STD) NMR spectroscopy was used to determine that the caffeic acid region of the montbretins is important for binding. HPA is involved in the breakdown of complex carbohydrates; inhibition of this enzyme could help with regulation of blood sugar levels after a meal. In the lungs of cystic fibrosis patients, the activation of Toll-Like Receptor 5 (TLR5) in the presence of flagellin leads to inflammation and obstruction. Girolline (3-1), a known alkaloid, was isolated from a Phonpeian sponge following potent inhibition of the flagellin initiated TLR5 activation. No activity was observed in any synthetic analogues of girolline. The massacreones are a new family of ecdysteroids isolated from an unidentified Dominican cnidarian. The extract of the cnidarian had good TLR5 activity, but the massacreones – namely massacreone A (3-25) and massacreone B (3-26) have only moderate activity and a small window of activity before they are toxic. The algal pigment caulerpin (4-29) was isolated from Caulerpa sp. as a compound showing good activity in a yeast growth restoration assay designed to identify inhibitors ofhuman indoleamine-2,3-dioxygenase (IDO). Caulerpin did not show any activity in a free enzyme IDO assay. IDO is involved in immune escape, which prevents the immunological rejection of tumors.

No disponible a texto completo

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The present work proposes a critical reflection over the Arade River, in the Algarve region, and its relationship with the surrounding populations. A river that once served as the main axis of connection and communication for people and products between the river mouth and Silves, is today relegated to oblivion. Standing before a somewhat neglected landscape, comes an attempt to lay a basis for the recognition and reactivation of the territory. Following the river we can find vernacular structures that mirror past time memories, of when the river was one of the livelihoods of the region. These structures are linked to the different production activities that punctuated the daily lives of the populations. The natural infrastructure - the Arade river as a structure of (re)connection and invigoration of the territory -, takes shape as a proposal to reactivate the axis of yesteryear, where the architectural design opens the way for the reinterpretation of the territory, through the creation of paths that relate it to its margin, while uniting the landscape and the heritage, celebrating and preserving its history.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The exercise put forth arises from the restlessness and thinking of how, throughout the passage of time, the human being was able to stand apart from all the other living beings and natural elements that make up our planet. It is from the concern surrounding this subject, and clarifying the commitment of future generations, that, with grounds on philosophical thinking, it is sought to convey that Nature is everywhere and that us, the human beings, are an insignificant part of an overwhelming living system, with which we need and ought to coexist. Being aware of what we are as human beings, it is from the topographical condition of valley in the site of Xabregas, where it is present a post-industrial background, that the proposal, both at the urban and the built scale, will arise from the cohesion between us human beings and all the other elements that intrinsically form the territory. It is through this line of thought that the application of the five sustainability points is proposed – the localization, the passive design, the water, the materials and the energy. The idea of being able to coexist, in an area so close to the Lisbon centre, in articulation with the introduction of new uses, born to complement the site’s already existing activities, will allow to coherently redesign the territory at different levels, dynamizing new experiences that attract the population to make the most of the outdoors, while at the same time appealing to the natural functioning of the site.

Bringans, Scott D. "Studies on natural product derivatives : HIV therapies incorporating marine natural products." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Chemistry, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/6699.

Full text
Abstract:
CV-N is an 11 kDa, anti-HIV protein that binds strongly to the envelope glycoprotein, gp120, expressed on the outer surface of the free virion and also on HIV-infected cells. As such, it represents an important lead for development of anti-HIV therapeutics. Marine toxins such as the halichondrins have potent in vivo cytotoxicities and are lethal to cells. The combination of this potency of the marine toxins with the unique targeting capability of CV-N has been harnessed to produce conjugates that have the potential to selectively target and eliminate HIV-infected cells. Three forms of the protein were developed; the native protein itself, a derivative recombinantly produced in E. coli with an extra cysteine at the C-terminal (CV-N-Cys) and CV-N with the lysine side chain amines converted into thiols (thiolated-CV-N). To facilitate release of the toxin within infected cells an enzymatically-cleavable pHdependent biolinker was incorporated separating the toxin from the protein. The chemistry required for incorporation of protein, biolinker, and toxin, was established through synthesis of fluorescently labelled conjugates capable of reaction with CV-N. Biological testing of these derivatives showed no interference with the anti-HIV activity of the CV-N when conjugated in these model compounds. Synthetic strategies were developed to produce two derivatives of norhomohalichondrin B amine, both containing the cleavable biolinker, but with activation from succinimidyl esters and maleimido groups respectively. Native CV-N was reacted with the succinimidyl ester derived toxin construct to produce a CV-N-biolinker-toxin conjugate. The maleimido derivative toxin construct was reacted with both CV-N-Cys and thiolated-CV -N to produce closely related CV-N-toxin conjugates. Investigations into the binding properties and cell toxicities of these conjugates is currently underway.

In this assignment, it will present you the development of my practical work and the understanding from the readings, which is related to my project. From the point of view of going through the world that we can see, it mainly focuses on the thing, which exists in our daily life and the imagination, which exists in our mind. For me, artwork is the representation coming from the wonderful illusion and imagination, in that order, artwork will go into the field of itself to realize the power of “retentir”, and especially escape the influence from the mainstream issues. Artwork will have its own dialogue with the audience directly and it will show you the condition of nature and natural existence in a simple way without any explanations.

Abstract:
Chemoprevention is an approach based on the use of natural or synthetic compounds to inhibit, suppress or reverse the development and progression of cancer. In order to overcome the cancer disease, the identification of chemopreventive compounds is of particular interest. Among them, antimutagens prevent the mutagen-induced DNA-injury or promote the repair and/or the reversion of damage. In addition to antimutagenicity, some agents also act as chemosensitizers, by increasing the effectiveness of cancer chemotherapy and radiotherapy, when used in combination with chemotherapeutical agents. This approach is very interesting to prevent the development of multidrug resistance (MDR), which makes cancer cells not-sensitive to a broad range of drugs. In this context, present study was aimed at evaluating the potential chemopreventive properties of some natural and naturally-derived compounds, particularly the sesquiterpenes β-caryophyllene (CRY) and β-caryophyllene oxide (CRYO), and the aldehyde α-hexylcinnamal (HCA). The antimutagenic activity was evaluated by the reverse bacterial mutation assay (Ames test), on different strains of Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli, both in absence and presence of the S9-metabolic activation system. As mutagens, 2- nitrofluorene (2NF), sodium azide (SA), methyl methanesulfonate (MMS), 2-aminoanthracene (2AA), benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), 4-nitroquinoline N-oxide (4NQO), 1-nitropyrene (1NP), 1,8-dinitropyrene (1,8-DNP) and a sample of condensed smoke (CSC) from standard 3R4F cigarette were used. In addition to antimutagenicity studies, the potential chemosensitizing properties of CRY, CRYO and HCA and their ability to interfere with ABC-transporter function were evaluated, in Caco-2, CEM/ADR5000 and CCRF/CEM human cancer cells. For each compound, low concentrations (IC10 and IC20) were assayed in order to verify their potential additive, synergistic or antagonistic effects with the anticancer doxorubicin. The nature and the extent of the interaction were evaluated by the combination index (CI) and the isobologram analysis, respectively; conversely, the potential enhancement of drug effectiveness was quantified by cytotoxicity enhancement ratio (RR). The interaction between test compounds and ABC-transporters was studied by the rhodamine 123 assay. HCA exhibited an antimutagenic activity against different nitro-compounds and in various experimental protocols, suggesting the involvement of both desmutagenic and bioantimutagenic mechanisms. The sesquiterpenes CRY and CRYO resulted able to inhibit the mutagenicity of CSC, although with different potency and specificity: CRYO was the most potent compound, acting at concentrations about ten-times lower than CRY. The antimutagenicity was highlighted in different strains and in all experimental protocols, suggesting the overlapping of various protective mechanisms; the inhibition of CSC-induced oxidative stress seems to be likely and deserves further investigations. In human cancer cells, the substances produced cytotoxic effects at high concentrations both in resistant and in sensitive cell lines: HCA was the most effective substance, especially in the sensitive CCRF-CEM cells. All the compounds synergistically acted with doxorubicin, although HCA was the most potent: IC20 HCA increased the doxorubicin cytotoxicity of about six, seven and fourthy-seven folds, in Caco-2, CEM/ADR5000, and CCRF-CEM, respectively. In addition, a remarkable inhibition of ABCtrasporter was produced by HCA in the cancer cells tested: the effect was higher than that of the standard inhibitior verapamil. Also CRY and CRYO inhibited the ABC transporters but with lower potency than verapamil. The antimutagenic and chemosensitizing properties of β-caryophyllene, β-caryophyllene oxide and the α-hexylcinnamaldehyde deserves attention and represent a starting point to better evaluate their potential applications in the field of chemoprevention.

The music with nature soundscapes has become rather popular recent years. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to explore how natural-environment-related activities determine individuals’ music preference. Taking factors such as wildlife-and-nature activities, information, group-activities, as well as travelling engagement in natural surroundings into consideration, this study applied McIntire and Pigram (1992) involvement theory and its assessment scale to verify the cause-and-effect relationship between involvement of outdoor activities and the music preference. Based on the references, this study provided a hypothesis. Participants of this research, which was conducted by using Internet questionnaires with au audio attachment, were all Internet users, and 476 snowball samples. This paper utilized Structure Equation Models (SEM) for statistical analysis method to verify the hypothesis. According to the analysis result, it turned out that there is a cause-and-effect relationship between the centrality aspect of activity involvement theory and the music preference, and centrality aspect is with a connotation that life style is associated with wildlife-and-nature activities such as sharing with friends about wildlife-and-nature activities or enjoyment of visiting natural surroundings, etc. On the other hand, this study showed that aspects of attraction and self-expression have no impact on music of nature. This research was an advocate of Cross & Morley (2006) theory of music behavior, that is, music behavior is associated with individuals’ social functioning.
