Abstract:
The monograph summarizes new relevant materials and topics. The study of the sources (forms) of environmental and natural resource law, legislation on environmental assessment and environmental control (supervision), provisions of land and other codes as forms of law, mechanisms for regulating environmental management, as well as the evolution of sources of law in the field of agriculture. The complex nature of environmental law is demonstrated, the constitutional, legislative, and political foundations of environmental development, the unified state environmental policy of the Russian Federation and a number of foreign states are outlined. The genesis and systematization of forms of atmospheric air protection, specially protected natural territories of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, legal regulation of waste management, international and national measures of adaptation to climate change are reflected. The legislation on land reclamation, land management, subsoil use, forest management, water use, fishing and conservation of aquatic biological resources in the system of sources of environmental law is analyzed; the issues of intersectoral communication of environmental, urban planning, information, energy, civil legislation and law are considered. Examples from the field of law enforcement are given. The idea of ecologization of sources (forms), institutions, categories, norms of branches of Russian law is being developed. For lawyers — scientists and practitioners, teachers, postgraduates, masters, law students, and other specialists interested in the theory and practice of lawmaking and the application of environmental law.

Siebert, Martina, Kai Jun Chen, and Dorothy Ko, eds. Making the Palace Machine Work. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463720359.

Full text
Abstract:
Making the Palace Machine Work: Mobilizing People, Objects, and Nature in the Qing Empire brings the studies of institutions, labour, and material cultures to bear on the history of science and technology by tracing the workings of the Imperial Household Department (Neiwufu) in the Qing court and empire. An enormous apparatus that employed 22,000 men and women at its heyday, the Department operated a "machine" with myriad moving parts. The first part of the book portrays the people who kept it running, from technical experts to menial servants, and scrutinises the paper trails they left behind. Part II uncovers the working principles of the machine by following the production chains of some of its most splendid products: gilded statues, jade, porcelain, and textiles. Part III examines the complex task of managing living organisms and natural environments, including lotus plants grown in imperial ponds in Beijing, fresh medicines sourced from disparate regions, and tribute elephants from Southeast Asia.

Orlov, Igor', and Nikolay Solov'ev. South French Gothic. ru: INFRA-M Academic Publishing LLC., 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.12737/1844169.

Full text
Abstract:
The main purpose of the monograph is to reveal the deep and complex interrelation of the religious and mystical paradigm of the original "Occitan civilization" of the South of France and the Catholic Church, which won the bloody Albigensian wars, with the artistic practice of the builders of the cult Gothic structures of the South of France. In addition to the literary sources previously used in scientific circulation, materials of little-known foreign publications, archival documents (courtesy of the Augustin Museum, the University of Toulouse and the Catholic Institute of Toulouse, the Center for Qatari Studies in Carcassonne), as well as materials of the author's direct research of natural objects of the studied region were involved. The analysis of all these data made it possible to see and evaluate the cultural and historical background in a new way, which became fertile ground for the emergence and spread of Gothic art, the subsequent formation and spread of the peculiar Gothic architecture of the South of France. For the first time, a number of new hypotheses are introduced into scientific circulation, allowing a more objective look at the features of the cult Gothic of Southern France. Based on the above, for the first time in Russian medieval studies, it became possible to propose a reasonable, in the author's opinion, classification of cult Gothic structures in the South of France, which naturally correlates with the data of scientific publications. For a wide range of readers interested in Gothic art. It can be useful for students, postgraduates and teachers of art history universities and faculties.

Bowd, Stephen, Sarah Cockram, and John Gagné. Shadow Agents of Renaissance War. Nieuwe Prinsengracht 89 1018 VR Amsterdam Nederland: Amsterdam University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463721356.

Full text
Abstract:
Who were the shadow agents of Renaissance war? In this pioneering collection of essays scholars use new archival evidence and other sources, including literature, artworks, and other non-textual material, to uncover those men, women, children and other animals who sustained war by means of their preparatory, auxiliary, infrastructural, or supplementary labour. These shadow agents worked in the zone between visibility and invisibility, often moving between civilians and soldiers, and their labour was frequently forced. This volume engages with a range of important debates including: the relationship between war and state formation; the ‘military revolution’ or transformation of early modern military force; the nature of human and non-human agency; gender and war; civilian protection and expulsion; and espionage and diplomacy. The focus of the volume is on Italy, but it includes studies of France and England, and the editors place these themes in a broader European context with the aim of supporting and stimulating research in this field.

Abstract:
Remarks on the aftermath of the Laon siege and on his publications’ reception by papal censors preface the chapter’s main subject, an account of Bodin’s contribution to natural theology, the Universae naturae theatrum. Presented as a dialogue, the work relies principally though by no means exclusively upon Aristotelian methodologies and draws on a range of source materials, with ancient authorities well to the fore. Bodin’s use of methodology and source, including evidence empirically obtained, is critically reviewed, as is his treatment of major natural scientific topics, notably motion. Via discussion of various natural phenomena and the doctrine of mean terms he arrives at a consideration of the soul, creation’s ‘universal bond’. A harmonious entity, the universe is subject always to God’s arbitrary interventions. Finally, the chapter discusses Bodin’s Paradoxon which, ostensibly challenging the Aristotelian doctrine of the mean, concerns itself ultimately with the will, the intellect, and the virtues.

Humle, Tatyana. Material Culture in Primates. Edited by Dan Hicks and Mary C. Beaudry. Oxford University Press, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199218714.013.0017.

Full text
Abstract:
This article focuses on the idea of material culture in primates. The ascription of culture to non-human animals has been controversial and a source of much debate. Much of this debate hinges on the definition of culture. This article cites the classic definition by Tylor which says that culture as ‘that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society’. The term ‘culture’ was first used in relation to non-human primates by Kummer. This article explains elementary technology among primates which concerns predominantly subsistence behaviours, expressed in, often complex, foraging techniques. Elementary technology among wild primates is typically based on natural materials, whether vegetation or non-organic matter. The various processes involved in the transmission of material culture are explained in detail. An in-depth analysis of the conditions of material culture followed by a study of culture among primates concludes this article.

Brett, Annabel. Sources in the Scholastic Legacy. Edited by Samantha Besson and Jean d’Aspremont. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780198745365.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter observes that the ‘sources of international law’ is a complicated concept for later scholastic authors. This is because they have no doctrine of ‘sources’ and because the phrase ius gentium, as they employ it, is not appropriately translated by ‘international law’. When they write about the ius gentium, they are engaged in an exercise of hermeneutic reconstruction of a law that has already been legislated, a reconstruction that is also a legitimation of their own position in the present. They draw their materials from scholastic authorities, from natural law, and from human practice and history. The possibility of abrogation, however, puts pressure on even their most innovative thinking about the ius gentium. This shows yet again how difficult they find it to conceptualize making international law in the present, and thus to conceive of sources of international law in anything like the modern sense.
