Abstract:
AbstractWithin the medical and physical sciences journals evidence suggests that problems of authorship ethics and journal management bedevil the editors of these journals. Although anecdotal evidence suggests that similar problems persist in political science, the extent of these problems within political science is not well established. Here we report the results of a survey of political science journal editors' perceptions of ethical and managerial issues associated with their journals. We find that unlike ethical publication concerns in the clinical and natural sciences fields, these issues are not of significant concern among our sample. Ethical problems are of low concern and editors report high levels of confidence to address these problems. Managerial problems, such as the adequacy of reviewer pools, are of higher concern to our sample.

Abstract:
AbstractIn the current context of a growing internationalization of scientific exchanges, the issue of the language of scientific publications – settled in the natural sciences since the 1980s – has now become a central issue for the Social Sciences. Our paper discusses this topical issue through a detailed analysis of the linguistic strategies adopted by two major French social science journals, Population and Revue française de sociologie (RFS), which have chosen to translate into English a selection (RFS) or all (Population) of their articles. In view of the measured effects in terms of visibility in the international scientific field – increasing visibility for the journal Population at the expense of its French edition and a marginal effect for the RFS – we raise questions about the role of national social sciences journals and recall that the specific intellectual mission of these journals lies beyond the pursuit of internationalization.

Abstract:
Currently, research on wetlands is a rapidly developing field. To understand the state of wetland science in China, we used the term “wetland” ,“marsh”, “swamp”, “bog” and “mire” as the keywords to search in the ISI Web of Knowledge and the Chinese Journals Full-Text Database and collect Chinese and English literature on wetland written by Chinese researchers. These publications were analyzed with bibliometric methods by the distribution of the publication year, the author and organization distribution, the journal distribution, the research funds, the research regions and the subjects. The results indicate that core research groups working in the field of wetland science in China have already been formed, although the distribution of research groups was scattered across many institutions and universities. Dispersion and concentration coexisted in the journal distribution of Chinese and English publications—the majority of publications were clumped in a small number of journals, while a minority was scattered in a large number of journals. In China, there are two professional journals publishing papers on wetlands, Wetland Science and Wetland Science & Management. However, it is reasonable to launch an English language wetland journal in the country to enhance communication and cooperation. Research funds for wetland science have a wide array of sources. An important portion of the papers in Chinese was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and provincial foundations, while those in English were supported either by National Natural Science Foundation of China or international funds. Field studies in wetland science were mainly conducted in the regions with great valleys. Wetland hydrology, Wetland Biogeochemical process and Wetland protection and management are the main objects of those studies. With the development of economy, many environmental and resource issues have emerged due to the excessive use and subsequent destruction of wetland areas. Thus, enforcing the protection of wetlands is becoming increasingly popular.

Abstract:
Geographers have been arguing recently that the idea of what is ‘international’ in this field has been occupied by the hegemonic discourses of Anglo-American geography and journals. This paper takes this lively debate as an indicator of the global challenges facing higher education and research and provides an analysis of the changing conditions of knowledge production, characterised by internationalisation and competition. Knowledge production is governed to an increasing degree through practices based on market-like operations. The author argues that this may lead to the homogenisation of social science publication practices, which are known to be heterogeneous and context dependent. One indicator of this homogenisation is the demand for publishing in international journals that is arising in social sciences and humanities round the world. Both ‘international’ and ‘quality’ are increasingly being connected with the journals noted in the Institute of Scientific Information's (ISI) databases. Starting with an analysis of the changing conditions of knowledge production in general and in human geography in particular, the author scrutinises the spatial patterns of the international journal publishing spaces constituted by the ISI. The results show specific geographies: not only the manner in which the Anglo-American journals dominate the publishing space in science but also how the publishing spaces of the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities are very different. The publication space of social science journals is particularly limited to the English-speaking countries, and this is especially the case with human geography.

Abstract:
Objective – The purpose was to determine whether a relationship exists between journal downloads and either faculty authoring venue or citations to these faculty, or whether a relationship exists between journal rankings and local authoring venues or citations. A related purpose was to determine if any such relationship varied between or within disciplines. A final purpose was to determine if specific tools for ranking journals or indexing authorship and citation were demonstrably better than alternatives. Methods – Multiple years of journal usage, ranking, and citation data for twelve disciplines were combined in Excel, and the strength of relationships were determined using rank correlation coefficients. Results – The results illustrated marked disciplinary variation as to the degree that faculty decisions to download a journal article can be used as a proxy to predict which journals they will publish in or which journals will cite faculty’s work. While journal access requests show moderate to strong relationships with the journals in which faculty publish, as well as journals whose articles cite local faculty, the data suggest that Scopus may be the better resource to find such information for these journals in the health sciences and Web of Science may be the better resource for all other disciplines analyzed. The same can be said for the ability of external ranking mechanisms to predict faculty publishing behaviours. Eigenfactor is more predictive for both authoring and citing-by-others across most of the representative disciplines in the social sciences as well as the physical and natural sciences. With the health sciences, no clear pattern emerges. Conclusion – Collecting and correlating authorship and citation data allows patterns of use to emerge, resulting in a more accurate picture of use activity than the commonly used cost-per-use method. To find the best information on authoring activity by local faculty for subscribed journals, use Scopus. To find the best information on citing activity by faculty peers for subscribed titles use Thomson Reuters’ customized Local Journal Use Reports (LJUR), or limit a Web of Science search to local institution. The Eigenfactor and SNIP journal quality metrics results can better inform selection decisions, and are publicly available. Given the trend toward more centralized collection development, it is still critical to obtain liaison input no matter what datasets are used for decision making. This evidence of value can be used to defend any local library “tax” that academic departments pay as well as promote services to help faculty demonstrate their research impact.

Abstract:
Abstract SCI-E and SSCI are one of the main citation databases (CDB) in the world in the field of natural and applied (SCI-E) and social (SSCI) scientific disciplines. In 2014, within the SCIE all scientific fields of natural and applied science disciplines are classified into 176 categories, and within SSCI all scientific fields of social science disciplines are classified into 56 categories. Scientific journals in the field of “Economic Sciences” are sorted within the SSCI in 8 (eight) categories, plus one category within the SCI-E. The aim of the paper is to show the state and analysis of scientific journals indexed in SSCI and SCI-E citation databases (CDB) for 9 (nine) listed categories in the field of “Economic Sciences” for the period 1995-2014. The number of different scientific journals for 9 (nine) listed categories in the field of “Economic Sciences” for a period of 1997-2014, increased for 455 journals (from 415 journals in 1995 to 860 journals in 2014) with cumulative growth index (CGI) of 207,23% compared to 1997. Best ranked category among the nine listed categories in the field of “Economic Sciences” was the category “Economics” (Econ), which according to the number of journals for the entire period 1995-2014 was always ranked first (top-one) within SSCI. The largest increase in the number of scientific journals for the period 1995-2014 for all nine listed categories in the field of “Economic Sciences” had the category “Management” (Manag).

Abstract:
In this study of access models, we compared citation performance in journals that do and do not levy article processing charges (APCs) as part of their business model. We used a sample of journals from the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) science class and its 13 subclasses and recorded four citation metrics: JIF, H-index, citations per publication (CPP) and quartile rank. We examined 1881 science journals indexed in DOAJ. Thomson Reuters Journal Citation Reports and Web of Science were used to extract JIF, H-index, CPP and quartile category. Overall, the JIF, H-index and CPP indicated that APC and non-APC open access (OA) journals had equal impact. Quartile category ranking indicated a difference in favour of APC journals. In each science subclass, we found significant differences between APC and non-APC journals in all citation metrics except for quartile rank. Discipline-related variations were observed in non-APC journals. Differences in the rank positions of scores in different groups identified citation advantages for non-APC journals in physiology, zoology, microbiology and geology, followed by botany, astronomy and general biology. Impact ranged from moderate to low in physics, chemistry, human anatomy, mathematics, general science and natural history. The results suggest that authors should consider field- and discipline-related differences in the OA citation advantage, especially when they are considering non-APC OA journals categorised in two or more subjects. This may encourage OA publishing at least in the science class.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the journals of the Russian Science Citation Index (RSCI) (Web of Science platform) in respect to publication misconduct and predatory practices. Design/methodology/approach The paper employs formal criteria developed by the Disseropedia of Russian Journals (a.k.a. the Journal Project of the Russian Dissernet). Findings A substantial number of the RSCI journals violate publishing ethics and/or are involved in predatory practices (fake peer-review, plagiarism and self-plagiarism, publication of pseudoscientific papers and so on). The general trend is negative: the number of such journals was higher in July 2018 than in 2015 when the RSCI was launched. The authors propose that this situation is due to the non-transparent and partly defective process of journal selection involved; primarily it can be attributed to problems with the RSCI expert pool. Research limitations/implications Many cases of publication misconduct are inevitably overlooked due to natural limitations of the tools. Originality/value The approach and methods were developed by the Disseropedia of Russian Journals and the Dissernet for the specific local Russian situation, where the scientific and editorial community is corrupt and the institution of reputation does not work properly. The authors believe that the experience may also be helpful for scientists and academic officials from other countries.

Abstract:
Experience plays a critical role in crafting high-impact scientific work. This is particularly evident in top multidisciplinary journals, where a scientist is unlikely to appear as senior author if he or she has not previously published within the same journal. Here, we develop a quantitative understanding of author order by quantifying this “chaperone effect,” capturing how scientists transition into senior status within a particular publication venue. We illustrate that the chaperone effect has a different magnitude for journals in different branches of science, being more pronounced in medical and biological sciences and weaker in natural sciences. Finally, we show that in the case of high-impact venues, the chaperone effect has significant implications, specifically resulting in a higher average impact relative to papers authored by new principal investigators (PIs). Our findings shed light on the role played by experience in publishing within specific scientific journals, on the paths toward acquiring the necessary experience and expertise, and on the skills required to publish in prestigious venues.

Abstract:
In Part 2, the authors are testing the methods of assessing Russian science journals citation in the natural, agricultural sciences and the humanities based on Web of Science Core Collection. The methodological approach is based on calculating citation coefficient which is a modified version of impact factor, calculated as the ratio of the number of citing documents to the number of scientific articles in Russian journals. The method is tested on the scientific articles published in Russian journals of 2012–2018 and indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection. As a result, recommendations are developed on how to promote Russian journals to the international databases based on Web of Science Core Collection taking into account the specifics of OECD domains under the examination. The general recommendations are: to decrease the share of mono-national publications thus increasing the share of articles written in the international collaboration; and to increase the share of articles by foreign authors. The study is accomplished through the funding within the State Order of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian federation “Organizational, technological, research and methodological support of promoting national journals to the international science citation bases and information analytical support of the national subscription to international science information resources for scientific and educational organizations”.

Abstract:
Scholars need to obtain a certain level of international recognition for academic progression. This is usually achieved by publishing articles in internationally recognized journals, books, and conference papers. The question is which journals should be considered of international relevance and how they should be ranked. For this purpose, a ranking system based on the Journal Citation Reports (JCR), combined with the leading research engine, the Web of Science (WoS), is used. While a ranking system based on the JCR is considered most suitable for natural and technical sciences, it has many shortcomings when considering social sciences and humanities, including legal science. This is observed when such a system is applied in countries that cannot claim to have a profound impact on the global development of legal thought and where scholarly legal production is almost exclusively conducted in the national language, such as in Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries. This study analyzes the general laws and rules regarding the qualification of journals in Serbia, Croatia, and Slovenia, and special laws pertaining to social sciences, especially legal science. Although there are many points of interest regarding different situations in which the national laws on the qualification of journals gain importance, this study focuses on the relevance of these laws in terms of the promotion of legal scholars to positions of university lecturers. It analyzes the requirements for the promotion to a full professor of law. It concludes that the laws of the three countries, through different forms, managed to find a delicate balance between the requirement of publishing articles in internationally recognized journals and the characteristics of legal science as it is predominantly conducted in the national language and addressed to a domestic audience.

Abstract:
AbstractNations the world over are increasingly turning to quantitative performance-based metrics to evaluate the quality of research outputs, as these metrics are abundant and provide an easy measure of ranking research. In 2010, the Danish Ministry of Science and Higher Education followed this trend and began portioning out a percentage of the available research funding according to how many research outputs each Danish university produces. Not all research outputs are eligible: only those published in a curated list of academic journals and publishers, the so-called BFI list, are included. The BFI list is ranked, which may create incentives for academic authors to target certain publication outlets or publication types over others. In this study we examine the potential effect these relatively new research evaluation methods have had on the publication patterns of researchers in Denmark. The study finds that publication behaviors in the Natural Sciences & Technology, Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) have changed, while the Health Sciences appear unaffected. Researchers in Natural Sciences & Technology appear to focus on high impact journals that reap more BFI points. While researchers in SSH have also increased their focus on the impact of the publication outlet, they also appear to have altered their preferred publication types, publishing more journal articles in the Social Sciences and more anthologies in the Humanities.

The citation impact of Environment and Planning B: Planning and Design can be visualized using its citation relations with journals in its environment as the links of a network. The size of the nodes is varied in correspondence to the relative citation impact in this environment. Additionally, one can correct for the effect of within-journal ‘self’-citations. The network can be partitioned and clustered using algorithms from social network analysis. After transposing the matrix in terms of rows and columns, the citing patterns can be mapped analogously. Citing patterns reflect the activity of the community of authors who publish in the journal, while being cited indicates reception. Environment and Planning B: Planning and Design is cited across the interface between the social sciences and the natural sciences, but its authors cite almost exclusively from the domain of the Social Science Citation Index.

Abstract:
In sciences such as biomedicine, researchers and journal editors are well aware that progress in answering difficult questions generally requires movement through a research cycle: Research on a topic or problem progresses from pure description, through correlational analyses and natural experiments, to phased randomized controlled trials (RCTs). In biomedical research all of these research activities are valued and find publication outlets in major journals. In political science, however, a growing emphasis on valid causal inference has led to the suppression of work early in the research cycle. The result of a potentially myopic emphasis on just one aspect of the cycle reduces incentives for discovery of new types of political phenomena, and more careful, efficient, transparent, and ethical research practices. Political science should recognize the significance of the research cycle and develop distinct criteria to evaluate work at each of its stages.

In the last 10 years, there has been a rapid proliferation of subdisciplines in the biological sciences. Such a burgeoning, especially in ecology and natural resource science, has been matched by the initiation of numerous specialist journals devoted to publishing articles in relatively restricted fields. But few of these new journals explicitly aim at seeking broad parallels in thinking and methodology among these subdisciplines or encouraging synthetic approaches at a time when environmental issues, for example, beg understanding of the big picture. It is therefore reassuring to find a journal (with a long history back to 1914 (Strahan 1994)) such as Australian Zoologist that continues to cater to specialists in zoology, but also published frequent articles of broad interest to all scientists. Better still, these papers are often topical and provocative, questioning dogma, pricking consciences, and seeking synthesis of larger issues and of most value is the creativity with which issues are addressed in Australian Zoologist.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe digital revolution has made it easier for political scientists to share and access high-quality research online. However, many articles are stored in proprietary databases that some institutions cannot afford. High-quality, peer-reviewed, top-tier journal articles that have been made open access (OA) (i.e., freely available online) theoretically should be accessed and cited more easily than articles of similar quality that are available only to paying customers. Research into the efficacy of OA publishing thus far has focused mainly on the natural sciences, and the results have been mixed. Because OA has not been as widely adopted in the social sciences, disciplines such as political science have received little attention in the OA research. In this article, we seek to determine the efficacy of OA in political science. Our primary hypothesis is that OA articles will be cited at higher rates than articles that are toll access (TA), which means available only to paying customers. We test this hypothesis by analyzing the mean citation rates of OA and TA articles from eight top-ranked political science journals. We find that OA publication results in a clear citation advantage in political science publishing.

Abstract:
The ArgumentIn the nineteenth century, American legal educators drew on the idea of “legal science” the claim that the study of law was similar to the study of the natural sciences. In this paper, I propose to examine the particular conceptions of “science” that were incorporated into that idea. The primary point of the paper is to argue that in antebellum America, a particular view of the natural sciences dominated public discourse, and it was this conception that was appropriated by contemporaneous legal scientists. Public discussions of natural science in lyceums, surveys, and journals, were carried out in a language grounded in the same religious commitments and the same normative conception of nature that drove the ideology of laissez-faire. Described under the rubric “Protestant Baconianism,” the approach was characterized by commitments to four elements: natural theology; a constrained version of Baconian inductivism; a belief in grand synthesis and proof by analogy; and claims of moral improvement. These elements were typical of the efforts of a particular influential circle of natural scientists and, similarly, of some of the more influential legal scientists in the antebellum period. This article examines the elements of the Protestant Baconian approach that were incorporated into Christopher Columbus Langdell's model of legal science in the 1870s, a model that continues to influence thinking about both legal education and jurisprudence to this day.

Abstract:
World economic science covers a huge variety of theoretical and practical issues. Russian socio-economic transformation is its natural part of theoretical studies. We believe that this is an objective situation of “two discourses”. Many Russian scientists work in the sphere of the “World discourse” and have achieved certain individual successes. The efforts of Russian scientists concentrate on national problems, so the volume of research and publications in the “Russian discourse” is much greater, as is our contribution to economic science. Interest in the “Russian discourse” on the part of the world science is limited and it cannot get a lot of place in high-profile journals, which is reflected in the ratings. Differences in the discourses are not rigid, but noticeably correspond with the groups of authors of scientific works. Works on the “Russian discourse” determine the picture of publications in the national journal field.

Abstract:
Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the bibliographic characteristics and content of articles on flood management published in journals indexed by Scopus written by researchers from throughout the world from 2000 to 2019.Methods: We obtained data from the Scopus database on October 2, 2020. “Flood management” was used to search across several categories, including article title, abstract, and keywords, filtered by subject area (social science; environmental science; and business, management, and accounting). We only retrieved articles written in English. We conducted content analysis using the VOSviewer software and visualized the co-occurrence of keywords and bibliographic coupling of sources and countries. Results: Following the study protocol, we found 984 articles on flood management over the past 20 years. Among the three subject areas, environmental science was the most productive field for publishing flood management articles. Flood control, flood management, and risk assessment were the top three most popular topics. Flood management publications were published in 266 journals. In total, 86 countries collaborated to produce research related to flood management. Natural Hazard Journal and Journal of Flood Risk Management were the most prominent journals. Institutions from Europe ominated the top 10 institutions with the most publications by affiliated researchers. Conclusion: From a global perspective, flood management research in the past two decades has increased significantly. There were five major topic clusters, and European-published journals ominated publications. Thus, Asian institutions need to conduct more active research on this topic.

Abstract:
The Web of Science citation indexes were originally intended to serve as research aids, to provide easy-to-use bibliographic aids for authors, help authors identify colleagues who have cited their work, and assist librarians in making selections among journals. But they were soon carried by the tidal waves of scientism and data-ism, first in business management and governance, and then also in scholarly research, to near-monopolistic control of the business of journals evaluation in the United States (though increasingly challenged in some areas by the more recent but similar Scopus citation indexes). With that dominance, earlier tentative generalizations based on limited research gradually became more and more rigidified “laws” that have been strictly enforced: that quality can be scientifically measured by the number of articles that cite the article or a particular journal, and, by extension, that the importance and contribution of a scholar’s article, like that of a journal, can be determined by its “impact factor” measured by counting the number of articles citing it. Those “laws” came to be applied first to the natural sciences, extended to the social sciences, and finally also to major spheres of the arts and humanities. Today, they have come to dominate the entire continuum of disciplines and fields ranging from the most universalist of the natural sciences, in which truths may be established by reproducible experiments, to the more particularist social sciences, and still more particularist arts and humanities, in which theories, even facts, are far more contested and tentative. As we move across the spectrum from the more universalist end of natural sciences toward the more particularist end of the social sciences and arts and humanities, such methods have tended to violate ever more the fundamental nature and realities of scholarly research. However, once entrenched, the citation indexes business has shown the same tendencies as any monopolistic entity toward resisting change and transparency. Where those tendencies have been adopted by a centralized government for bureaucratized control, as in China, the misuses and abuses of citation indexes have been further magnified. This article ends by calling for developing more substantive, genuinely peer-review-based methods of evaluation; for relying more on alternative nonprofit bibliographic and data services; and for greater inclusivity, especially with regard to scholarship in languages other than English.

Abstract:
Object The number of citations a published article receives is a measure of its impact in the scientific community. This study identifies and characterizes the current 100 top-cited articles in journals specifically dedicated to neurosurgery. Methods Neurosurgical journals were identified using the Institute for Scientific Information Journal Citation Reports. A search was performed using Institute for Scientific Information Web of Science for articles appearing in each of these journals. The 100 top-cited articles were selected and analyzed. Results The 100 most cited manuscripts in neurosurgical journals appeared in 3 of 13 journals dedicated to neurosurgery. These included 79 in the Journal of Neurosurgery, 11 in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, and 10 in Neurosurgery. The individual citation counts for these articles ranged from 287 to 1515. Seventy-seven percent of articles were published between 1976 and 1995. Representation varied widely across neurosurgical disciplines, with cerebrovascular diseases leading (43 articles), followed by trauma (27 articles), stereotactic and functional neurosurgery (13 articles), and neurooncology (12 articles). The study types included 5 randomized trials, 5 cooperative studies, 1 observational cohort study, 69 case series, 8 review articles, and 12 animal studies. Thirty articles dealt with surgical management and 12 with nonsurgical management. There were 15 studies of natural history of disease or outcomes after trauma, 11 classification or grading scales, and 10 studies of human pathophysiology. Conclusions The most cited articles in neurosurgical journals are trials evaluating surgical or medical therapies, descriptions of novel techniques, or systems for classifying or grading disease. The time of publication, field of study, nature of the work, and the journal in which the work appears are possible determinants of the likelihood of citation and impact.

Abstract:
Pharmacy is a multidisciplinary research field that combines natural sciences, health sciences and social sciences to study drugs and pharmaceutical preparations from multiple perspectives. The study explores publishing patterns in pharmacy via bibliometric methods, that is statistical methods applied to study scientific literature. Earlier bibliometric studies focusing on pharmacy have used data from the international citation databases Web of Science and Scopus. In most of these studies, pharmacy has been operationalized by focusing on journals categorized as pharmacy journals. This study provides a new approach to the study of publishing patterns, by using data from institutional Current Research Information Systems (CRIS), and by using pharmacy organizations as the basis of operationalization of pharmacy. It seeks to provide a more comprehensive picture of publishing patterns, since the data covers all publication types used in pharmacy and is not limited to pharmacy journals. The objective of this study is thus to explore whether the selection of databases and operationalization of the discipline affects the results concerning publishing patterns in pharmacy. The results obtained in this study are very similar to earlier studies utilizing international databases. However, the results show that pharmacy researchers also publish in national languages, and that there are several national journals amongst the core journals that are not covered by the international databases. The multidisciplinary nature of pharmacy can be seen in the wide range of journals in which pharmacy researchers publish their articles.

Abstract:
It should be noticed that though the amount of information resources is constantly increasing, natural science education suffers from lack of electronic information sources. Moreover, in this case, the Lithuanian language is used extremely rarely. Presently, more and more teachers of natural sciences use the Internet, and therefore the popularity of electronic information resources is growing. However, the questions of how to evaluate the quality of similar resources and how to conceptually integrate those into the teaching/learning process arise. Legal and ethical aspects of using information found on the Internet are faced i.e. the problems of quotation, plagiarism and copyright are encountered. Connecting science education teachers to innovative electronic information resources is the subject of discussion. The growing number of electronic resources can make finding resources with high quality content. Electronic resources are not fully realized by science education teachers. Therefore, the main goal of this article is to introduce science teachers with the most popular digital resources. In this article the databases, e-libraries, e-journals and books, encyclopedias, most popular search engines for science teachers are presented. Key words: science education, electronic information resourcses, databases.

Abstract:
Historians of science have long acknowledged the important role that journals play in the scientific enterprise. They both secure the shared values of a scientific community and certify what that community takes to be licensed knowledge. The advent of the first learned periodicals in the mid-seventeenth century was therefore a major event. But why did this event happen when it did, and how was the permanence of the learned journal secured? This paper reveals some of the answers. It examines the shifting fortunes of one of the earliest of natural-philosophical periodicals, the Philosophical Transactions, launched in London in 1665 by Henry Oldenburg. The paper shows how fraught the enterprise of journal publishing was in the Europe of that period, and, not least, it draws attention to a number of publications that arose out of the commercial realm of the Restoration to rival (or parody) Oldenburg's now famous creation. By doing so it helps restore to view the hard work that underpinned the republic of letters. And as for natural philosophy, is it not removed from Oxford and Cambridge to Gresham College in London, and to be learned out of their gazettes?Thomas Hobbes, Behemoth (written c. 1668).

The role and place of science libraries during the transfer to digital science information and online user services is examined. The authors argue that in these circumstances of transfer to digital communication and Internet-based services and facilities, the peer-reviewed journals still maintain their role as a key publication format and promptly deliver research findings to researchers and experts. Open access has not been widely adopted in fundamental sciences: the scholarly information awareness system has to be financed by the government. The network of academic and research libraries make the part of this system. Based on the experience of the centralized library network (CLN) of the Russian Academy of Sciences Library for Natural Sciences (RAS LNS), the possibilities of the vast academic library network are explored. The structure of full-text collection of CLN RAS LNS is analyzed. This collection core is made primarily of the National Electronic Subscription materials comprising the world most established academic journals. With the Internet, these resources can be delivered directly to researcher’s workplace via the two channels under the National Electronic Subscription program, i. e. via his/her organizational subscription or via the library providing services to his/her organization. Both channels should be integrated in the system where the core resources are provided directly to the organization, and individual components demanded by individual researcher – via the library network. This system of science information provision has been for several years efficiently functioning at CLN RAS LNS. The need for similar system for the outside of National Electronic Subscription program is substantiated.

The wide spectrum of full text and bibliographic information resources (e. g. Web of Science, Scopus), which Library for Natural Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences (LNS RAS) had in its subscription for the last few years, was a ground for the autors' efforts in developing of the modern system of selective dissemination of information (SDI system). At the same time, acquisition of information sources on traditional media has been steadily decreasing in recent years.Sources of bibliographic information in this SDI system are bibliographic databases Web of Science and Scopus, and full-text platforms of foreign scientific publishers (currently — several dozen, including John Wiley & Sons, Springer Nature and ScienceDirect). The users of the SDI system have opportunity to get two kinds of service: the first one is informing on the current issues of the scientific journals which are preselected by user himself; the second one is the thematic informing based on the keywords of user thematic requests. This SDI system has the important feature that distinguishes it from traditional definition of SDI systems: we do not restrict either lists of journals reported by users nor the bibliographic sources in thematic sets by the list of full text sources available via library’s subscription. The only condition for including specific journal in the SDI system for the first kind of service or including the bibliographic source in thematic sets for the second kind of service is existing of the source as electronic web entity. If user has made order for full text material from contents/thematic information set, the library retrieves such full text material via all available ways beginning with library’s subscription and finishing with interlibrary loan.We have selected e-mail sending of personalized information sets for our users, as it was the mode selected as preferable mode by our users themselves. Personalized information sets include ordinary fields of bibliographic record (incl. abstracts if available in protosource) and some fields for increasing navigation options of records: link to full text via DOI, link for article record in Scopus and PubMed, information about library’s subscription for source where specific record is published.

Abstract:
SYNOPSIS I present two types of data about the publication and review process in the accounting, economics, finance, management, marketing, psychology, and natural science disciplines. First, I collect all articles published in 2012 in top-tier journals of these disciplines and compare the articles based on word counts, figures, and tables included in each article, the time it took to be published, citations, the number of co-authors, and submission fees. I then survey academics in each discipline. Survey questions were designed to evaluate overall perceptions of the review process, changes in the review process in the last five years, opinions about appropriate acceptance rates, assessment of reviewers and editors, and general assessments of reviewers and the review process, faculty evaluation, and journals. While there are many results, key results for the accounting discipline include very low citation patterns relative to other disciplines, a belief that reviewers have not improved in the last five years, a desire for acceptance rates twice as high at the top-tier journals, and that reviewers focus too much on incremental contribution and rigor and not enough on research that contributes to practice. Additional results are presented and discussed. Data Availability: Contact the author.

THOMASMITCHELL(1792–1855), explorer and Surveyor-General in New South Wales between 1828 and 1855, was a talented and competent draughtsman who was responsible for the original sketches and even some of the lithographs he used to illustrate his two journals of exploration, published in 1838 and 1848. In this paper, I will be concerned with the 1838 journal, entitledThree Expeditions into the Interior of Eastern Australia; with descriptions of the recently explored region of Australia Felix, and of the Present Colony of New South Wales. On the whole, it is a detailed and lavishly illustrated account of the land Mitchell encountered, along with its inhabitants and natural history. My particular interest is in offering an explanation for differences between a sepia sketch depicting a cave at Wellington, NSW, that Mitchell prepared as one of the illustrations for geological material included in this journal, and the final lithograph.

The present work seeks to understand from a historical-critical discussion, which theoreticalmethodological propositions (teacher as technician or critic-reflexive) are revealed in the educational practices of teachers in Natural Sciences in Youuth and Adults Education (EJA) in Brazil. Therefore, it was used a review of problematized literature on the subject based on specific bibliographies and search databases such as BDTD, Scielo and Capes journals, whose descriptors were: EJA, science teaching, historical-critical pedagogy, technical professor and critical-reflective teacher. Thus, it was concluded that the teaching action in Natural Sciences in the EJA still needs to overcome its condition of pure technical rationality in relation to its theoretical-methodologicalepistemological bases, since it is still quite technical, with a view to obtaining a more sociohistorical, reflexive and critical support.

Abstract:
The present study explores the characteristics of publication records for a total duration of twenty years, from 2000 to 2019, in the field of Curcuma longa research. This study has been carried out based on the multidisciplinary bibliographic database available with the Web of Science in Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCIE) and Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) and its implications, using the means of scientometrics research techniques. In order to make this analysis a holistic and comprehensive survey of the research trends in the chosen field, the following variables are taken into account: growth rate; global citation scores; distribution of publications by journals, conferences and institutions; favored media of communication; Hirsch index and citation profile of top institutions, countries and authors; contribution of funding agencies; high number of cited papers and characteristics of their bibliographic details. The total number of publication records has been found out to be 6087 during the study period. These 6087 publications have received 171 h-index, 1, 84,715 global citations score and 30.34 average citations. On the whole, 6087 records were published during the study period (2000-2019) in 18 types of documents from 107 countries with 2005 journals, contributed by as many as 20855 authors affiliated to 4879 institutions. These publications were brought out in 18 languages, and they received 1, 56,986 cited references. Majority of the records were in the form of journal articles, reviews, papers in conference proceedings and meeting abstracts, accounting for 97 percent of the total publications. Naturally enough, English happens to be the leading language of 98.8 percent to have accounted for the most number of publications. The four largest contributing countries in the total literature on Curcuma longa during the entire study period are India (24.68 percent), USA (17.7 percent), China (12.2 percent) and Iran (6.09 percent) respectively. The largest institutional contributor of publication records happens to be the Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Mashhad, Iran with 1.8 percent of the papers to its credit. The most prolific authors to have published more number of research documents during the study period were Sahebkar A (73 papers), Aggarwal BB (67 papers), Nayak S (35 papers) and Kumar A (33 papers). The journal of “Food chemistry” Elsevier ltd tops the list of journals with maximum number of publication records in the field for the given study period with 70 publications, followed by “Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry” American Chemical Society (69 papers), “Phytotherapy Research” John Wiley and sons Ltd (63 papers) and “PLOS One” Public Library of Science (59 papers). While the Third World Congress on Medicinal and Aromatic Plants - WOCMAP III held in February 2003 at Thailand resulted in the publication of 6 papers, the following three major funding agencies contributed immensely to the research activities in the field: ‘National Natural Science Foundation of China’ with 318papers, United States Department of Health & Human Services, USA with 304 papers and Council of Scientific Industrial Research, India with 99 papers.

Abstract:
Internationalization pressures are omnipresent in the world of science. Scholars and administrators now often make use of international impact as a yardstick by which to assess the quality of national scholarship. However, little is hitherto known about the effects of the internationalization incentives at the level of specific national scientific communities. This article presents an analysis of the forms of internationalization in Chile over a period of four decades, from 1976 to 2015. Using Web of Science data, the article looks at the evolution for both publications and citations and examines the internationalization pressures on Chilean scholars and Chilean journals in relation to changes at the level of publication language and co-authorship. The article particularly focuses on the differences between the three cultures (humanities, natural sciences and social sciences). Building on the findings, the article concludes with some suggestions for research policy.

Abstract:
Main sources for this bibliography were the 2001 editions of various databases such as the Australian Public Affairs Information Service (APAIS), Chemical Abstracts and Medline Express. In addition, issues of a number of Australian journals published in 2001 were scanned, and readers of the bibliography sent information about relevant items to the compiler. Most items included were published in 2001, but a number of earlier publications were also found which it was thought should be included. The scope of the bibliography is limited to material on the history of the natural sciences (mathematics, physical sciences, earth sciences and biological sciences), some of the applied sciences (including medical and health sciences, agriculture, manufacturing and engineering), and human sciences (psychology, anthropology and sociology). Biographical material on practitioners in these sciences is also of interest. The compiler would like to thank those people who sent items or information about items published during 2001 for inclusion in the bibliography. It would again be appreciated if he could be notified about other items dealing with the history of science in Australasia, the South West Pacific area and Antarctica published during 2001, but have been omitted. Readers are invited to alert the compiler to the publication of books, journal articles, conference papers, reports, Masters and PhD theses and reviews on the subject published during 2002 for inclusion in future bibliographies. Pertinent information should be sent to the compiler, C/- Deakin University Library, Geelong, Victoria 3217, Australia or by e-mail to laurie.carlson@austehc.unimelb.edu.au.

Abstract:
HighlightsPublication profiles of seven highly published authors were analyzed from Google Scholar profiles.Journal impact factor (JIF) not strongly correlated to citations in the first two years after publication.Significant correlation between the number of citations in the first two years and total citations to an article.More important to submit manuscripts to journals with appropriate readership than the highest JIF.Abstract. In today’s world of research publishing, authors are typically encouraged to submit manuscripts to journals with the highest possible journal impact factor (JIF). This approach inherently assumes that the higher the JIF, the more likely the article will be cited. However, calls to move away from the JIF are becoming more common. This study analyzes the publication profiles of seven authors who are members of the Natural Resources and Environmental Systems (NRES) community of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) and who frequently publish in ASABE journals. This study hypothesized that statistically significant correlations existed between the JIF and the (1) total number of citations, (2) number of citations per year, and/or (3) number of citations in the first two years after publication. Based on 999 articles published by these seven authors from 1982 to 2018, statistically significant but fairly low to moderate correlations were observed between the JIF and the total citations, citations per year, and citations in the first two years after publication. The greatest correlation was observed between the number of citations that an article received in the first two years after publication and the number of citations per year (or the total number of citations). Therefore, ensuring an appropriate readership to generate short-term citations was more important than the JIF. When compared to high-JIF journals, there were statistically fewer citations per year and fewer citations in the first two years after publication for articles published in ASABE journals. While ASABE journal articles possess high citation longevity (i.e., cited half-life), efforts to immediately improve short-term metrics should focus on attracting high-quality research and improving article visibility. To extrapolate these findings to a wider community, future research should investigate these correlations for researchers in other ASABE technical communities and at various career stages. Keywords: Citations, Journal citation factor, Journal impact factor, Peer review, Research impact.

Abstract:
Soil is an important aspect of the ecosystem that plays a crucial role in human population sustainability. Due to natural and anthropogenic activity, soil pollution has become a major environmental issue around the world. Since 1985, researchers have been studying the prevention and treatment of polluted soils. This study used bibliometric approaches to evaluate the soil remediation dataset in the Web of Science database during 2001–2020 to show current research trends and hot themes in quantitative analysis and soil remediation around the world. The findings suggest that the area of soil remediation has entered a period of rapid advancement. China excelled over all other countries in terms of the number of independent and collaborative articles published across soil pollution research worldwide. The findings revealed that the leading journals in the field of soil remediation include Science of the Total Environment, Microchemical Journal, and Journal of Hazardous Materials. Following closely behind the Chinese Academy of Sciences (428) and Zhejiang University (106) was the Russian Academy of Sciences (87). Furthermore, keyword frequency and co-word analyses showed the most important research subjects. Among them, the hot themes were recognized as “heavy metals”, “PAHs”, “bioremediation”, “phytoremediation”, and “electrokinetic remediation”. Understanding the current situation in soil remediation as well as providing directions for future research are the goals of this study.
