Abstract:
Chapter 3 explains evidence for three generations of quarks and leptons, as needed to provide natural means for standard model CP violation. It describes the cross-generational mixing of quarks and of neutrinos of different flavor, and the matrices that characterize the mixing. CP violation from quark mixing is well measured but insufficient to explain the universe’s matter–antimatter imbalance, while CP violation in neutrino mixing is the subject of ongoing searches. Discoveries revealing and quantifying flavor oscillations among neutrinos from the sun and the atmosphere are reviewed. In describing attempts to understand the lightness and nature of neutrinos—whether they are Majorana neutrinos that are their own antiparticles—the chapter introduces the concept of chirality and searches for neutrinoless double beta decay. It also notes the strong CP problem, wherein nature maintains CP symmetry in interactions among the three quark colors even though quantum chromodynamics allows for sizable violations.

Abstract:
This chapter presents network-generating models which cannot be neatly categorized as growing, nor as defined primarily through a target degree distribution. They are best understood as mechanistic constructions designed to elucidate a particular feature of the network. In the first sub-section, the Watts–Strogatz model is introduced and motivated as a construction to achieve both a high degree of clustering and a low average path length. Geometric graphs, in their Euclidian flavour, are shown to be a natural choice for broadcast networks. The Hyperbolic variant is informally described, because it is known to be a natural space in which to embed hierarchical graphs. Planar graphs have very specific real-world applications, but are extraordinarily challenging to analyze mathematically. Finally, weighted graphs allow for concepts such as traffic to be incorporated into the random graph model.

Abstract:
Larvae of many marine invertebrates must capture and ingest particulate food in order to develop to metamorphosis. These larvae use only a few physical processes to capture particles, but implement these processes using diverse morphologies and behaviors. Detailed understanding of larval feeding mechanism permits investigators to make predictions about feeding performance, including the size spectrum of particles larvae can capture and the rates at which they can capture them. In nature, larvae are immersed in complex mixtures of edible particles of varying size, density, flavor, and nutritional quality, as well as many particles that are too large to ingest. Concentrations of all of these components vary on fine temporal and spatial scales. Mechanistic models linking larval feeding mechanism to performance can be combined with data on food availability in nature and integrated into broader bioenergetics models to yield increased understanding of the biology of larvae in complex natural habitats.
