Davila, Andrés. "Les formes de la transe dans le cinéma expérimental ethnographique contemporain." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Paris 3, 2023. http://www.theses.fr/2023PA030026.

Full text
Abstract:
This research focuses on the work of contemporary filmmakers whose artistic practice takes up one of the central themes of ethnographic cinema: the phenomenon of trance. Artists such as Marc et Éric Hurtado (Jajouka, quelque chose de bon vient vers toi, 2012), Tiane Doan na Champassak & Jean Dubrel (Natpwe, le festin des esprits, 2013), Vincent Moon (Collection Petites Planètes), Soundwalk Collective & Patti Smith (Illuminations, 2018) and Susana de Sousa Dias (Fordlândia Malaise, 2019), explore new avenues of ethnographic research through experimental film. Although relatively distant in their respective fields of experimentation, these artists approach different dimensions of trance in the same spirit of discovery. To do so, they mainly resort to formal invention and to production and distribution processes outside the film industry. The works of these artists have a specific approach to cinema and are characterized by the use of film (Super 16mm, 16mm, Super 8 and 8mm), the exploration of the particularities of perception, the disdain for standardized digital formats and the use of the powers of sound and music to create a sensory experience. Furthermore, in these works we see how trance cults in the contemporary world, mostly popular, continue to resist subordination to religious systems. In many cases, the trance forms of these cults find strong resonances with the myths, poetry, and music of traditions that depart from religious orthodoxy. Thus, the marginal and sometimes transgressive character of these practices, in relation to institutional religions, often gives them a subversive and libertarian dimension. This research work uses an interdisciplinary method and questions the relationship between this group of films and ethnomusicology, the anthropology of possession, ethnographic cinema and experimental cinema

White, Annie. "From Nursery to Nature: Evaluating Native Herbaceous Flowering Plants Versus Native Cultivars for Pollinator Habitat Restoration." ScholarWorks @ UVM, 2016. http://scholarworks.uvm.edu/graddis/626.

Full text
Abstract:
There is growing awareness about the value of preserving and restoring floral-rich habitats for the benefit of pollinators, especially native bees. The increasing demand for native plants in pollinator habitat restoration and other ecological landscaping applications, combined with the desire for more robust and predictable plant habits, have led to the selection and breeding of native cultivars. Yet, little is known about how these cultivated varieties differ from the native species in their ability to attract and support pollinators. I compared flower visitation by all insect pollinators to 12 native herbaceous plant species and 14 native cultivars in a replicated field experiment at two sites over two years. I classified insect pollinators during visual field observations into seven taxonomic and functional groups. I found seven native species to be visited significantly more frequently by all insect pollinators (combined) than their cultivars, four were visited equally, and one native cultivar was visited more frequently than the native species. Bees (both native and non-native) and moths/butterflies exhibited similar preferences, whereas flies showed no preference between the native species and the native cultivar. Our study shows that many insect pollinators prefer to forage on native species over cultivated varieties of the native species, but not always, and not exclusively. Some native cultivars may be comparable substitions for native species in pollinator habitat restoration projects, but all cultivars should be evaluated on an individual basis. Plant selection is integral to the value and success of pollinator habitat restorations, yet there is little consistency and overlap in pollinator planting recommendations and very little empirical data to support plant choice. Non peer-reviewed pollinator plant lists are widely available and are often region-specific, but they are typically based on anecdotal rather than empirical data and lack in specificity. To help close the gap between anecdotal and empirical data, and between practice and research, I reviewed the published literature on plant selection for pollinator habitat restoration. I explicitly reviewed and compared the value of native plant species, near-natives, non-natives and native cultivars. From there, I identified gaps in the literature that are most needed in practice and recommended basic strategies for practitioners to navigate plant lists and choose the best plants for a site's success.

Macis, Marijana. "The figurative nature of collocations : extent, knowledge and acquisition of duplex collocations by non-native speakers." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2016. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/38090/.

Full text
Abstract:
As shown by research conducted in the fields of corpus linguistics, psycholinguistics and second language acquisition (SLA), formulaic sequences (e.g. collocations, idioms, phrasal verbs, lexical bundles etc.) form a crucial part of second language learners’ language competence. One of the main characteristics of some of these multi-word combinations is their idiomatic nature and idioms have been widely researched as being the most compositional type. However, little is known whether collocations can be idiomatic too. Therefore, this thesis aims to fill that gap with a specific focus on statistically-derived collocations. Three studies have been carried out to this end. The first study examined the extent of collocations whose meanings were the sums of their component parts, those that were figurative (compositional or idiomatic) and finally, collocations that were polysemous, i.e. had both literal and figurative meanings. A corpus search was performed to find the most common V+N and Adj+N combinations and results showed that the majority of them had additive meanings (as reflected in traditional definitions of collocations), very few were completely opaque and a substantial percentage were those that allowed both literal and figurative interpretation. The second study was conducted in the Chilean classroom context and it focused on the knowledge of the figurative meanings of collocations. A meaning-recall test was used as a measurement instrument and variables such as corpus frequency, semantic transparency and language use factors were manipulated. The findings demonstrated rather weak figurative knowledge and a positive relationship between this knowledge and the amount of outside engagement. The last study investigated the same type of collocations, namely how non-native speakers acquired figurative meanings incidentally through reading. An authentic novel was used as a means to manipulate one single variable, frequency of exposure. Results showed that the figurative meanings could be acquired incidentally from reading and that the point at which a substantial amount of learning occurred varied greatly among individuals. Overall, results of the studies presented in this thesis stress the importance of researching the acquisition, use and knowledge of collocations with figurative meanings as they have important implications for instructed SLA.

Surtees, Chantal. "Quantifying the nature and extent of native fauna by-catch during feral cat soft-catch leg-hold trapping." Thesis, Surtees, Chantal (2017) Quantifying the nature and extent of native fauna by-catch during feral cat soft-catch leg-hold trapping. Honours thesis, Murdoch University, 2017. https://researchrepository.murdoch.edu.au/id/eprint/38515/.

Full text
Abstract:
Feral cats devastate the Australian landscape and have been linked to a number of species extinctions through either predation or spread of diseases. Soft-catch leg-hold traps are routinely used to capture feral cats for research purposes or control, however by-catch is likely. Examination of by-catch data provided for six sites in Western Australia during the period 1997-2014 identified variability in by-catch across sites. This was attributed to differences in climate and landscape, the likely abundance of introduced predators prior to trapping and the experience of the trappers affecting when, where and how traps were set. Olfactory lures affected the taxonomy (with the exception of birds) of by-catch; reptiles were attracted to the PONGO lure (mix containing predator urine and faeces) used, but mammals were repelled. Reptiles may associate strong odours with food, while the mammals were cautious of the predatory species’ scent. Non-native by-catch were injured in traps less than the native by-catch most likely because they were generally better able to withstand the pressure from closing jaws. Amongst the native fauna; birds were more likely to be severely injured due to their morphology, behaviour and weight; amongst non-avian fauna species, the larger the captured individuals, the less likely they were to be injured due to their ability to better withstand the trap pressure. Injury to by-catch species poses animal ethics concerns, as approval to trap may be denied based on frequency and severity of injury to native and target species alike. It also raises concern for species of conservation significance that already have dwindling populations, such as the woylie, and can least afford the added threat from trapping. Future trapping exercises should proceed cautiously, with care taken in the timing of trapping, the placement of traps and the setting of traps (especially the treadle pressure needed to close the trap) to minimise the chance of by-catch and potential mortality. Additionally, by-catch welfare reports should be routinely prepared and examined to ensure best practice and on-going improvement.

Tirén, Stina. "An Ecofeminist Reading of Louise Erdrich’s Novel Love Medicine." Thesis, Högskolan i Gävle, Avdelningen för humaniora, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hig:diva-35397.

Full text
Abstract:
Louise Erdrich's novel Love Medicine presents a variety of voices that depict thetruths of Chippewa life and how they as a group are victims of a society that authorizesoppression and domination. Studies show that Chippewa tribes have a close connectionto nature and with each other as people. Ecofeminist critics draw analogies between theexploitation of nature and the oppression of groups such as those based on race, class, and sexuality, which results in a distortion of Native people's identity and connection tonature. Since the characters and nature are both oppressed and exploited by the U.Sgovernment, it becomes relevant to draw parallels between Erdrich's characters andnature with ecofeminism. The analysis concludes that ecofeminism can be applied toErdrich's novel because they share some values such as the importance of striving forinterconnection between humans and nature to free both from the power structure. TheChippewa characters and the U.S government can be identified in ecofeminist discourseas a set of dualisms. However, there are also some differences between ecofeminismand the way in which Erdrich depicts her Chippewa characters and nature. Erdrich’sstory shows that both female and male characters of Chippewa origin possess a sacredrelationship to Mother Earth, not only women, as ecofeminists would suggest.

Danielsson, William. "React Native application development : A comparison between native Android and React Native." Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Interaktiva och kognitiva system, 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-131645.

Full text
Abstract:
Creating a mobile application often requires the developers to create one for Android och one for iOS, the two leading operating systems for mobile devices. The two applications may have the same layout and logic but several components of the user interface (UI) will differ and the applications themselves need to be developed in two different languages. This process is gruesome since it is time consuming to create two applications and it requires two different sets of knowledge. There have been attempts to create techniques, services or frameworks in order to solve this problem but these hybrids have not been able to provide a native feeling of the resulting applications. This thesis has evaluated the newly released framework React Native that can create both iOS and Android applications by compiling the code written in React. The resulting applications can share code and consists of the UI components which are unique for each platform. The thesis focused on Android and tried to replicate an existing Android application in order to measure user experience and performance. The result was surprisingly positive for React Native as some user could not tell the two applications apart and nearly all users did not mind using a React Native application. The performance evaluation measured GPU frequency, CPU load, memory usage and power consumption. Nearly all measurements displayed a performance advantage for the Android application but the differences were not protruding. The overall experience is that React Native a very interesting framework that can simplify the development process for mobile applications to a high degree. As long as the application itself is not too complex, the development is uncomplicated and one is able to create an application in very short time and be compiled to both Android and iOS.
