Abstract:
Globalization, Nationalism, and Music Education in the Twenty-First Century in Greater China examines the recent developments in school education and music education in Greater China – Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan – and the relationship between, and integration of, national cultural identity and globalization in their respective school curriculums. Regardless of their common history and cultural backgrounds, in recent decades, these localities have experienced divergent political, cultural, and educational structures. Through an analysis of the literature, official curriculum documents, approved music textbooks, and a survey questionnaire and in-depth interviews with music teachers, this book also examines the ways in which policies for national identity formation and globalization interact to complement and contradict each other in the context of music education in respect to national and cultural values in the three territories. Wai-Chung Ho’s substantive research interests include the sociology of music, China’s education system, and the comparative study of East Asian music education. Her research focuses on education and development, with an emphasis on the impact of the interplay between globalization, nationalization, and localization on cultural development and school music education.

Abstract:
This chapter describes the personality and politics of Murli Manohar Joshi who was the Minister of Human Resource Development (MHRD) during the NDA Government (1998–2004), first truly non-Congress Party Government at the Centre with an idea of India which was starkly at variance with that of Nehru. It also describes the achievements of Joshi such as enacting the Constitutional Amendment to make Right to Elementary Education as Fundamental Right, and launch of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) as well as the controversies which enveloped the NCERT School History textbooks, the National Curricular Framework (NCF), 2000. It briefly outlines the competing schools of pedagogy, critiques NCF, 2000, and its proposal to incorporate education about religions in school curriculum. It also describes the growth of private universities as a result of the liberalization of regulations for deemed universities as well as permissive State Laws, the issue of UGC regulations on private university, and the landmark Supreme Court judgment in Yash Pal case which spawned a powerful New UGC that was a species different from that created by the UGC Act, 1956.

This is the only volume of its kind that addresses the long and complicated history of translations of Virgil, whose poems were at the centre of the educational curriculum and the wider culture of Europe until the nineteenth century. While this collection of chapters covers numerous European traditions (English, French, German, Greek, Irish, Italian, Norwegian, Spanish), the volume also extends its focus beyond European translations to translations into Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese, Russian, Slovenian, Turkish, and the young world language, Esperanto. Classic translations such as those of Dryden, Du Bellay, Leopardi, Valéry, and Voß are considered alongside more surprising names, including Pasolini and Wordsworth, and recent interventions, for example by Heaney and Veyne. Each essay provides theoretical background for the case studies considered. In the Introduction the editors draw attention to some overarching issues. The volume closes with contributions by two active translators, Alessandro Fo in Italian and Josephine Balmer in English. This volume is dedicated to the study of translations of Virgil as a national and transnational cultural phenomenon and is an invitation to further study of this important topic.

Abstract:
Many countries worldwide benefit from a long tradition of early childhood education, some serving the years from birth to seven or eight years old. Determined to provide out-of-home experiences for children before school start, this costly exercise has led to review of location, staffing, pedagogical approaches, and curriculum, while advocating ‘the best interests of the child’. Curriculum reform has often been used as an educational policy tool. There have been shifts in the roles and responsibilities of early educators and consequently in early childhood practices nationally and internationally. The long Scottish early childhood tradition provides a context in which to consider how an understanding of the child’s curriculum may be a gift to ensure an enlightened early childhood educational policy and curriculum interpretation at the beginning of the twenty-first century. By looking back, we can begin to look forward.
