Abstract:
Abstract The idea that socialism depends upon cooperation, as capitalism depends on competition, has always been inherent in the conception of socialism. Yet precise models of market socialism – ones, that is, that are sufficiently articulated so as to be able to discuss and compute an equilibrium in the economy – do not model cooperation in production, or more generally, in economic behavior. We introduce a Kantian optimization protocol, which, in contrast to Nash optimization, models how individuals can cooperate in labor and/or investment decisions. We prove that the ‘cooperative equilibrium’, thus modeled, is Pareto efficient whenever, in addition to receiving wages and rents, profits are distributed not to shareholders, but to workers and investors in proportion to their contributions to the firm. Pareto efficiency is achieved when the firms entire output is distributed to factor owners and shareholders do not exist.

Abstract:
We compute the cooperative and the Nash equilibrium solutions for the discounted optimal control problem in a two-player differential game of reclamation of a resource extraction site, where each firm’s planning horizon presents the period that extraction of the resources from their site is economically viable. Hence, the planning horizon is defined by a random duration determined on the infinite time horizon. The comparison of the cooperative and Nash solutions and also the comparative statics are provided numerically. We also define the concept of “normalized value of cooperation” and explain how this concept could help us to better characterize the losses the players will face if they continue to refrain from cooperation.

Abstract:
Recently, there is an emerging trend of addressing “energy efficiency” aspect of wireless communications. It has been shown that cooperating users relay each other's information to improve data rates. The energy is limited in the wireless cellular network, but the mobile users refuse to relay. This paper presents an approach that encourages user cooperation in order to improve the energy efficiency. The game theory is an efficient method to solve such conflicts. We present a cellular framework in which two mobile users, who desire to communicate with a common base station, may cooperate via decode-and-forward relaying. In the case of imperfect information assumption, cooperative Nash dynamic game is used between the two users' cooperation to tackle the decision making problems: whether to cooperate and how to cooperate in wireless networks. The scheme based on “cooperative game theory” can achieve general pareto-optimal performance for cooperative games, and thus, maximize the entire system payoff while maintaining fairness.

Abstract:
An n-person differential game Γ(x, T-t) with independent motions from the initial state x and with prescribed duration T - t is considered. Suppose that y(s) is the cooperative trajectory maximizing the sum of players' payoffs. Suppose also that before starting the game players agree to divide the joint maximal payoff V(x, T - t; N) according to the imputation α, which is considered as a solution of a cooperative version of the game Γ(x, T - t). Using individual rationality of the imputation α we prove that if in the game Γ(y(s),T - s) along the cooperative trajectory y(s), the solution will be derived from the imputation α with the use of the imputation distribution procedure (IDP), for each given ε > 0 there exists ε-Nash equilibrium in Γ(x, T - t) for which the payoffs of the players in the game will be equal exactly to the components of the imputation α (cooperative outcome). This means that the imputation α is strategically supported by some specially constructed ε-Nash equilibrium in Γ(x, T - t). A similar result is true for a discrete game with perfect information.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to discuss the coopetition (cooperative competition) relationship between a manufacturer and a collector in the collection of waste mobile phones (WMPs) and examine the evolution mechanism and the internal reward-penalty mechanism (RPM) for their collection strategies. A coopetition evolutionary game model based on evolutionary game theory was developed to obtain their common and evolutional collection strategies. The pure-strategy Nash equilibriums of this model were obtained which showed their collection strategy choices of perfect competition or cooperation. The mixed strategy Nash equilibrium was obtained which revealed evolution trends and laws. In addition, the optimal RPM was obtained in the sensitivity analysis of related parameters. The example of WMPs in China was taken to examine the simulation of the RPM. Results show that (i) although the manufacturer and the collector may change their strategies of cooperation and competition over time, cooperation is their best choice to increase payoffs; (ii) the optimal RPM is beneficial to propel their cooperation tendency and then to increase their payoffs.

Abstract:
The theory of cooperative games with restricted cooperation has been rapidly developing over the last decades. In our study, we present a special game with restricted cooperation — a game with a major player — a modified version of the landlord game presented in Moulin [1988]. Cooperation of players is supposed to be restricted by a communication structure (a star-graph) as well as a coalition structure. We adopt two well-known cooperative allocations — the Myerson value and the ES-value — to the case when there exist restrictions on the cooperation of players and provide their analytical expressions. Additionally, we examine stability of coalition structures using the concept of the Nash equilibrium and formulate conditions guaranteeing such stability for a given coalition structure.

Abstract:
Aiming at not only economic benefits but also social benefits in university-enterprise cooperation, this paper considers both technological innovation and social responsibility in university-enterprise cooperation. By using differential game theory, this paper provides three models of Nash noncooperative game, Stackelberg game, and cooperative game and discusses the impact of these three models on university-enterprise cooperation. Our results show that the Stackelberg game model can improve the innovation level of the university based on innovation cost-sharing and does not change the social responsibility level of the university without sharing the social cost. Among the three game models, the cooperative game model can bring the greatest innovation level and social responsibility level to the university-enterprise cooperation and make the whole system realize Pareto optimal. Our research can provide a theoretical basis and practical guidance for university-enterprise cooperation.

Abstract:
This paper studies the standard version of the approval mechanism with two players in a common pool resource (CPR) extraction game. In the case of disapproval, the Nash extraction level is implemented. The paper investigates, experimentally, the extent to which the Nash threat leads to Pareto-improving extraction levels. Through our experiment, we confirm the effectiveness of the Nash threat in reducing CPR over-extraction. Although participants’ behavior is mainly explained by rational thinking, inequity in payoff can also motivate their behavior. Moreover, we show that there is neither an order effect nor a framing effect. Finally, the reduction persists when the Nash threat is no longer in place.

O tema central desta tese é a Cooperativa ?

Abstract:
In this thesis, competitive and cooperative newsboy problems for two substitutable products are analyzed by using game theoretic concepts. The demands of the products are assumed to be dependent and normally distributed. Competition is handled for Nash and Stackelberg games. Nash and Stackelberg games are compared in terms of the order quantities and the expected profits. Cooperative newsboy problem is analyzed for the products having equal costs and revenues. The effect of demand correlation on the order quantities and the expected profits in all of the games is investigated through numerical experiments. Optimal solutions of the Nash, Stackelberg and the cooperative games are examined analytically when the demand correlation is 1.

This work is the result of research developed over the Masters in Applied Social ciences by the University of Ponta Grossa, Paraná (UEPG), addressing the cooperative practices and representations of Coasul cooperative Cooperativa Agroindustrial, São João, PR. The Coasul was founded in 1969 and cooperated together over 3,000 of twenty counties in southwest and central region west of the state of Parana, with major economic, social and cultural life of thousands of people. Throughout its history developed economic activities related to agriculture, with the main crops of corn, soybeans and wheat, with production targeted for both domestic consumption for both large companies with marketing and industrialization. The objective of the research was studying how involved cooperated and how they perceive, interpret and give meaning to cooperative. Practices that are valued or not? How are they constructed the representations of these practices? These are the focuses of this fieldwork and theoretical, considering the history of the cooperative, the cooperative principles, the values defended by the cooperative practices and clashes with the reality of the experiences cooperated, their experiences. We tried to produce documentary records, obtained by participant observation such as stories of life and the field notebook. Were also used in the written tests, as Minutes of the Cooperative, which represent the life of the decisions cooperated, especially in time of foundation. It is expected, thus contributing to that reflects on the possibilities and limits of the traditional cooperative contemporary.
From Latin-Americans conceptions about rural communication, it analyzes the newspapers printeds by two Brazilians coffee grower's cooperatives: the Cooxupé, localized in South of Minas Gerais State, and the Coopemar, in State of São Paulo, countryside. It shows the hard scene of coffee growing in country between 2002 and 2003 and it presents the origin and development of cooperativist movement. It indicates the real features and it points trends and challenges of cooperativism in globalized economy. It displays the profile of agricultural cooperative leaderships and debates their legitimacy. It establishes the methodologic procedure that will be used in qualitative and quantitative content analysis of this organizations newspapers. It describes and explains the results from hypothesis analysed and it links this interpretation to theorists presuppositions of rural communication, based on Paulo Freire and Juan Diaz Bordenave's thoughts. It evidences that cooperative press creates an opportunity to agriculturist manifest as a subject in dialogic connection and it exposes that the diffusion of technology and the competitive global market are the greats protagonists of theses periodicals. Macrostructural themes predominate in these media, to the detriment of notions about local development, considered as paradigmal tendency of contemporary rural communication. Scientists of communication alert that rural doesn't mean just agricultural anymore. They include more extensive thematics in this journalistic speciality.

Abstract: The Brazilian citrus sector reveals organizational and institutional peculiarities that, if well understood and studied, can represent an alternative to the well-known process of reduction of small citrus producers operating in the orange belt. In the 21st century, the growing participation of small citrus producers in associations and cooperatives, in order to deal with market uncertainties, calls for the studies of these forms of governance that represent a less vertical and more cooperative arrangement between agents. Taking that into account, this work has the following research problem: The network governance structure adopted by small producers’ citrus cooperatives allows the reduction of risks in transactions, ex-ante (adverse selection) and ex-post (moral hazard), and the problems of opportunism downstream and upstream of the production chain? The general objective of the research is to analyze if the network governance structure adopted by small producers’ citrus cooperatives has allowed the reduction of risks in transactions, ex-ante (adverse selection) and ex-post (moral hazard), and the problems of opportunism downstream and upstream of the production chain. The planned methodological procedure included the structuring and research of two case studies in cooperatives of small orange producers in the interior of the state of São Paulo. The objective of this study is to establish whether mathematical activities, prepared based on cooperative learning, produce changes in how students learn and confront with mathematics. Thus, were designed, developed and analyzed six math classes cooperatives, which occurred in an 8 and a 9 th grade of elementary education at a private school. The proposed group of activities consists of mathematical problems written in the form of clue cards. Each group receives an envelope containing six cards, which must be distributed among team members. To solve the problem all students must contribute explaining their clues and sharing ideas. The teacher provides various materials to support the activities such as ruler, squares, compasses, paper, scissors, calculators, colored cubes, dice, straws, beans, charts etc. The results obtained by each group are described in the answer sheets, previously prepared by the teacher. Before and after cooperative classes, a questionnaire was applied in order to know the opinion of students about group work and their skills in mathematics. The results achieved with the cooperative activities were fruitful discussions on mathematical concepts and their properties, greater clarity from teachers regarding students' mathematical difficulties, greater social involvement, respect for ideas and opinions of group members, ability to represent mathematical situations by using concrete materials, drawings, graphics and text.

Abstract:
AbstractReinforcement learning has been shown to be an effective strategy for automatically training policies for challenging control problems. Focusing on non-cooperative multi-agent systems, we propose a novel reinforcement learning framework for training joint policies that form a Nash equilibrium. In our approach, rather than providing low-level reward functions, the user provides high-level specifications that encode the objective of each agent. Then, guided by the structure of the specifications, our algorithm searches over policies to identify one that provably forms an $$\epsilon $$ ϵ -Nash equilibrium (with high probability). Importantly, it prioritizes policies in a way that maximizes social welfare across all agents. Our empirical evaluation demonstrates that our algorithm computes equilibrium policies with high social welfare, whereas state-of-the-art baselines either fail to compute Nash equilibria or compute ones with comparatively lower social welfare.

Abstract:
When can cooperation arise from self-interested decisions in public goods games? And how can we help agents to act cooperatively? We examine these classical questions in a pivotal participation game, a variant of public good games, where heterogeneous agents make binary participation decisions on contributing their endowments, and the public project succeeds when it has enough contributions. We prove it is NP-complete to decide the existence of a cooperative Nash equilibrium such that the project succeeds. We demonstrate that the decision problem becomes easy if agents are homogeneous enough. We then propose two algorithms to help cooperation in the game. Our first algorithm adds an external investment to the public project, and our second algorithm uses matching funds. We show the cost to induce a cooperative Nash equilibrium is near-optimal for both algorithms. Finally, the cost of matching funds can always be smaller than the cost of adding an external investment. Intuitively, matching funds provide a greater incentive for cooperation than adding an external investment does.

Abstract:
Fictitious play (FP) is one of the most fundamental game-theoretical learning frameworks for computing Nash equilibrium in n-player games, which builds the foundation for modern multi-agent learning algorithms. Although FP has provable convergence guarantees on zero-sum games and potential games, many real-world problems are often a mixture of both and the convergence property of FP has not been fully studied yet. In this paper, we extend the convergence results of FP to the combinations of such games and beyond. Specifically, we derive new conditions for FP to converge by leveraging game decomposition techniques. We further develop a linear relationship unifying cooperation and competition in the sense that these two classes of games are mutually transferable. Finally, we analyse a non-convergent example of FP, the Shapley game, and develop sufficient conditions for FP to converge.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In Rational Synthesis, we consider a multi-agent system in which some of the agents are controllable and some are not. All agents have objectives, and the goal is to synthesize strategies for the controllable agents so that their objectives are satisfied, assuming rationality of the uncontrollable agents. Previous work on rational synthesis considers objectives in LTL, namely ones that describe on-going behaviors, and in Objective-LTL, which allows ranking of LTL formulas. In this paper, we extend rational synthesis to LTL[F] -- an extension of LTL by quality operators. The satisfaction value of an LTL[F] formula is a real value in [0,1], where the higher the value is, the higher is the quality in which the computation satisfies the specification. The extension significantly strengthens the framework of rational synthesis and enables a study its game- and social-choice theoretic aspects. In particular, we study the price of stability and price of anarchy of the rational-synthesis game and use them to explain the cooperative and non-cooperative settings of rational synthesis. Our algorithms make use of strategy logic and decision procedures for it. Thus, we are able to handle the richer quantitative setting using existing tools. In particular, we show that the cooperative and non-cooperative versions of quantitative rational synthesis are 2EXPTIME-complete and in 3EXPTIME, respectively -- not harder than the complexity known for their Boolean analogues.
