Abstract:
The introduction explains frameworks to compare and contextualize circum-Caribbean plantation performances of violence in a variety of media and genres from the nineteenth century to the twenty-first century. To do this, the introduction outlines an intersectional feminist approach to representations of race, class, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, skin tone, ability, and nationality in scenes of violence between women. This framework guides the reader to understand how texts reflect and respond to cultural assumptions and stereotypes about exceptional violence that obscure grotesque structures of power. The introduction, then, outlines the book’s main concern: how women in certain texts in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries attempt to gain positions of power through violence that echoes back to plantation slavery. The introduction also illustrates some of the narrative histories of violence between white and Black women in analyses of a nineteenth-century engraving that appears in Henry Bibb’s Narrative of the Life and Adventures of Henry Bibb, An American Slave (1849) and a painting from Kara Walker’s series Negress Notes (1995). In doing so, the introduction claims that depictions of intimacy (and/or physical and social separation) in scenes of violence reveal much about performances of identity and power.
