Abstract:
When people furnish their goal intentions (“I intend to attain the goal x!”) with implementation intentions (“I will initiate the goal-directed response y when situation z arises!”), the initiation of goal-directed responses becomes automatized. As this type of automaticity stems from a single act of will, it is referred to as strategic automaticity. We report various studies demonstrating that strategic automaticity leads to immediate and efficient responding, which does not need a conscious intent. In addition, the situational cues specified in implementation intentions seem to be easily detected and readily attended to. Further research indicates that the strategic automaticity induced by implementation intentions also helps resist temptations and fight bad habits. Following Nelson's (1996; Nelson & Narens, 1994) model of metacognition, we suggest that goal intentions and, in particular, implementation intentions are important components of the metacognitive control of action geared toward its initiation, continuation, and termination.

Abstract:
Functional cognitive disorders (FCD) have become a subject of increasing clinical interest in recent years, in part because of their high prevalence amongst patients attending dedicated memory clinics. Empirical understanding of FCD based on observational studies is growing, suggesting a relationship to other functional neurological disorders (FND) based on shared phenomenology. However, understanding of FCD at the theoretical level has been lacking. One suggestion has been that FCD are disorders of metacognition, most usually of metamemory. In this article, a brief overview of these constructs is presented along with existing evidence for their impairment in FCD. Previous adaptations of theoretical models of FND to accommodate FCD are reviewed. A novel application to FCD of Nelson and Narens’ monitoring and control model of metamemory is then attempted, positing an improper setting of the monitoring function, with examples of ecological relevance. Formulation of FCD in light of a metacognitive model of anosognosia is also considered. Although lacking mechanistic and neuroanatomical sophistication, this metacognitive formulation of FCD may give pointers for future hypothesis-driven research and a pragmatic basis for management strategies.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Background:Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is the second most common cause of healthcare-acquired infections in neonates. S. aureus colonization is a known risk factor for invasive disease. Aside from healthcare workers (HCWs), recent data suggest that parents are important reservoirs of S. aureus in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). S. aureus typically colonizes the nares, but it can also colonize other anatomic locations such as the throat. Objective: Our objectives were to identify and compare S. aureus colonization among HCWs and parents and to identify and compare different sites of S. aureus colonization. Methods: Between April 2015 and July 2016, we performed 4 point-prevalence surveys and collected nares and throat swabs from HCWs (nurses, respiratory therapists, nurse practitioners, and physicians) at a quaternary-care NICU. During an overlapping period, we screened parents of neonates in the NICU for S. aureus colonization using nares, throat, groin, and perianal cultures as a part of an ongoing randomized control trial. Cultures from both studies were collected using standardized methods. ESwabs were used to collect samples, which were inoculated into broth for enrichment and subsequently cultured onto chromogenic agar to differentiate between MSSA and MRSA. Results: The prevalence of methicillin susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) colonization was 46% (105/226) in HCWs and 28% (239/842) in parents. The prevalence of methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRSA) colonization was 2.2% (5/226) in HCWs and 2.2% (19/842) in parents. Of those who were colonized with S. aureus, 35% (79/226) of HCWs and 46.5% (160/344) of parents had nares and throat colonization while 11.5% (26/226) of HCWs and 12.2% (42/344) of parents had only throat colonization but not nares colonization. Of those who were MRSA colonized, 1.3% (3/226) of HCWs and 1.8% (15/842) of parents had a positive nares and throat culture as compared to 0.9% (2/226) of HCWs and 0.2% (2/842) of parents had only positive throat cultures. Additionally, 68% (175/257) were colonized with S. aureus at any swabbed site including nares, throat, groin, or perinanal areas. However, only 30% (77/257) of parents had only nares colonization as compared to 58.8% (151/257) had throat and nares colonization, 38.1% (98/257) had nares and groin colonization, and 37.4% (96/257) had nares and perianal colonization. Conclusions: HCWs had greater prevalence of S. aureus colonization compared to parents. As expected, the nares was the most common site of MSSA and MRSA, but a large proportion of S. aureus colonized HCWs and parents had only throat colonization. Given the prevalence of S. aureus in non-nares sites of HCWs and parents in the NICU, further studies should examine the role of non-nares carriers in the transmission of S. aureus in this population.Funding: NoneDisclosures: Aaron Milstone reports consultancy with Becton Dickinson.

Abstract:
Contemporary theories of learning suggest that successful learners are active in the learning process and that they tend to use a number of metacognitive processes to monitor learning and remembering. Drawing on the theoretical framework of Nelson and Narens (1992), the current study examined the effect of certain variables on metamemory processes and on students' ability to recall and recognise learned material. The present study explored the effect of four independent variables on five dependent variables. The independent variables were: 1. degree of learning (responses given until 2 or 8 times correct), 2. judgment of learning (JOL) timing (given immediately after learning session or 24 hours later), 3. retention interval between study and test (2 or 6 weeks), and 4. type of material studied (sentences, in or out of context). The dependent variables were: 1. judgement of learning (JOL), 2. confidence rating, 3. feeling of knowing (FOK), 4. recall, and 5. recognition.. As ancillary analyses, the study explored, firstly, whether gender differences had an effect on meta-level and object-level memory, and secondly, whether students who recalled more also made more accurate metamemory judgements. The effects of the independent variables on recall and recognition were consistent with those found by previous studies. The most interesting new finding of the present study was that students who made JOLs after twenty four hours were more likely to take into account the effect of the interval between learning and testing. Students who made immediate JOLs did not allow for the effect of the time interval on retention. A further new finding was that gender appeared to have had an influence on JOLs. The findings about the effects of timing of JOLs and of gender effects on JOL have implications for metacognitive theory and will stimulate further research. The practical significance of this research, particularly the implications for study skills training for all students, was that educators cannot presume that students will correctly predict what they will recall after six weeks if they make that judgement immediately after learning has occurred. Therefore, the effects of the passage of time on memory, and the efficacy of delaying judgments, should be made explicit. The finding that the manipulation of JOL timing has a significant effect on the accuracy of judgements has implications in the wider area of educational policymaking and for the current debate on competencies and quality assurance. Learning cannot be considered a simple process and when a large component of learning is selfdirected, as it is in tertiary institutions and increasingly in schools, many variables are operating.

Abstract:
This thesis studies how education is traditionally transmitted in my family and the apprenticeship served by young forger. The instruction given, however, goes for beyond the bounds of craft technology. Firstly, for the men there is metal work and for the women, pottery. But they are also both specialised in wood carving. Due to their friendship with the djinns, the forgers are soothsayers or seers. Talents which have lead them to constitute medecine, thus giving them not only the quality of healers but also of formidable magicians. To constantly renew bonds between the dead and spirits from the other world the forgers carry out rites. During funerals they are called upon to act as genealogists. They direct the initiation of the young : the men take charge of circumcision, the women, of excision. They are the priests of the secret initiatory society known as the komo. Lastly, they mediate during marriages and village conflicts. The aim of this piece of work is to show how the children are associated with the different roles and tasks of their parents

Abstract:
Narcis Oller (1846-1930) is held as the founder of the modern novel in Catalonia. The first part deals with his biography in full detail, not available until now : family origins, childhood in Valls, friendship with the critic Josep Yxart, his cousin, early love of literature. His life in Barcelona, where he was a law-student, enabled him to meet the mail figures of the "renaissance ("renaiwenca") : Guimera, Vilanova, Sarda, Matheu, etc. First publishing articles and short stories in Spanish, then he wrote practically everything in Catalan. His Catalan feelings remain firm. His literary success will earn him the esteem and friendship of the greatest writers in Spanish : Pereda, Galdos, Clarin, Menendez Pelayo, Pardo Bazan, Valera, etc. Thanks to his French translator, a. Savine, he became acquainted with Zola who wrote a preface to la Papallona ("le papillon"). Together with this life, we analyse his reactions before the social and political events in Catalonia. The second part treats his youthful readings, his literary theories, his working methods. And we devote several chapters to the thematic study of his works : language and style, narrative structures, function of patronyms, autonyms and toponyms, role of society, of the family, of women in this novels, and we end asking ourselves : does this work reflect the reality of his times ? And we provide our answer

A dense network of conductivity-temperature-depth measurements was conducted from Baffin Bay northward to 82 deg 09 min N at the entrance to the Lincoln Sea, in the most comprehensive physical oceanographic survey ever performed in the northern Baffin Bay-Nares Strait region. These data indicate Nares Strait Atlantic Intermediate Water and Arctic Basin Polar Water to be derived from Arctic Basin waters via the Canadian Archipelago, whereas the West Greenland Current (WGC) is the source of the comparatively dilute West Greenland Current Atlantic Intermediate Water and West Greenland Current Polar Water fractions. Baffin Bay Surface Water is found seasonally throughout northern Baffin Bay. Recurvature of component branches of the WGC, which attains a maximum baroclinic transport of 0.7 Sv, occurs primarily in Melville Bay (0.2 Sv), south of the Carey Islands (0.1 Sv) and ultimately in Smith Sound (0.2 Sv). The Baffin Current originates as an ice-edge jet in Smith Sound and is augmented by net outflow from Smith, Jones and Lancaster Sounds at rates of 0.3 Sv, 0.3 Sv and 1.1 Sv, respectively. Circulation in Smith, Jones and Lancaster Sounds can be described in terms of the Geostrophic Estuarine Circulation Model. The North Water is caused by the combined influences of near-surface layer enthalpy and mechanical ice removal.
ABSTRACT - Clinical evolution of brachycephalic dogs after corrective surgery in the owner’s view - Brachycephalic breeds such as Pug, Boxer, Shih Tzu, French and English Bulldog have increasing popularity in world society. However, anatomical defects such as stenotic nares and elongated soft palate, presented by many of these animals, are still underestimated by the owners, since they are considered "normal characteristics of the breed". According to the veterinary literature, the clinical signs most frequently associated are dyspnea, snoring, stridor, regurgitation, vomiting, cyanosis and collapse. It is known that chronic obstruction of the upper respiratory tract has important respiratory, digestive and systemic consequences for these animals, which can lead to death. The veterinarian has an essential role in guiding animal breeders and dog owners regarding the breeding, health care attention, welfare and the importance of surgical correction procedures for dogs with severe alterations. This Brachycephalic Airway Obstructive Syndrome (BOAS) experimental study carried out an online survey of 100 owners of brachycephalic dogs who had surgery on the stenotic and / or elongated soft palate. The results showed an evident clinical improvement of 99% of these animals through an increase in the level of activity and the reduction of respiratory and digestive clinical signs.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Two abyssal plain sites on either side of the North Atlantic Ocean are characterized by sequences of distal turbidites and pelagic clays. At the Great Meteor East location, turbidites are quite thick and geotechnical properties such as water content and shear strength can be correlated to the observed stratigraphy. At the Southern Nares Abyssal Plain site, turbidites are much thinner, harder to identify, and less distinct from the pelagic clays. Geotechnical properties there can not easily be correlated to the type of sediment.
