Abstract:
This article evaluates contemporary filmmaker Naomi Kawase’s (b. 1969–) status within Japan’s film industry as well as her place among women directors. Using Kawase’s three award winning features Suzaku (Moe no suzaku, 1997), Shara (Sharasōju, 2003), and Mogari (Mogari no mori, 2007) as the basis of my analysis, I examine the way in which these films illuminate the construction of Kawase’s female authorship in relation to a specific location. While Kawase has made a number of critically and commercially successful films since 2007, I limit my discussion to her early narrative works set in Nara, Japan in order to illuminate the significance of the international film festival apparatus in establishing and upholding the discourse of auteurism in relation to regional identity. Through my analysis I argue that Kawase successfully negotiates this discourse through a strategy of self-promotion that emphasizes a “cinema of place” within the broader context of international film festivals such as Cannes. Kawase’s “cinema of place” ultimately allows her to rearticulate the meaning of female authorship within an art cinema context by representing a new national cinema that challenges the structures and boundaries of Japan’s studio system.

Abstract:
During twentieth century monumental painting has undergone numerous changes in iconography, stylistics and figurative-plastic language itself. An important milestone was the turn of the '50–'60s. When the artists resorted to active decorative searches and the ways of plane expression. In the 1930–50's, socialist realism became the main pointer for the monumental artist, which was the dominant artistic method at that time. For the most effective use of this method, the artists have been oriented on the realistic and academic principles, filling classical forms with Soviet meaning. Panels become burdensome and suffocated by architectural decoration, the expressiveness of the monumental painting was lost. However, at the end of the '50s monumental painting began to move away from realistic tendencies. A search of new ways of expressions have been proceeded. A search of new ways of expressions proceeded. The impetus for rethinking styling was widely known resolution of November 4, 1955 "About the elimination of redundancies in design and construction. "The document became the peculiar starting point in Soviet architecture as well as monumental painting.According to this resolution aesthetical side had to be solved by organically linking the architectural form to the purpose of the building and established proportion. The task of architects was to work on the creation of standard buildings in simple economic forms. Thus, new opportunities for development in the monumental painting appear. With the formation of new architecture, murals and mosaics are gaining ground for experiments both with materials and figurative-plastic solutions. At the turn of the 60's significant projects were created in Kyiv, among them Kiev River Station (1961), Kiev Bus Station (1961), Shulyavska Subway Station (1963), Metro Restaurant (1963), interior design at The Institute of Plant Physiology and Genetics, NAS of Ukraine (1962), exteriors of the Institute of Plant Protection of the UAAS (1962).

Abstract:
Through the double mass curves analysis, it concluded that the relationship between the areal and the runoff depth within upper reaches of the Naoli River, the Naoli River basin had experienced a great change since 1963, especially the runoff coefficient which appeared in a decreasing trend. By adopting the runoff coefficient difference Rank and T test (α=0.05,n1=7,n2=43,T=255,T1α=108.52,T2α=248.47, T>T2α>T1α), it also concluded that there was no consistency between the runoff coefficient series from 1956 to 1962 and the ones from 1963 to 2005. By analyzing the frequency curves of precipitation-runoff depth, it indicated that, under the same precipitation frequency, the runoff coefficient in 1963-2005 was much smaller than that in 1956-1962. The research results revealed that: (1) The precipitation was the key driving force to runoff variation; (2) The land use/cover changes posed by human activities was one of important causes contributing to runoff coefficient mutation in the catchment area; (3)The runoff depth variation was mainly controlled by the Longtouqiao reservoir and the water consumption was influenced by irrigation of paddy field since 2001.

Abstract:
Naomi Mitchison (1897-1999) was an established novelist and political campaigner throughout her life. During the Second World War, she kept an extensive daily diary from her home on the Mull of Kintyre in Scotland which she sent in instalments to the London offices of the social research organisation, Mass Observation. Until the 1980s, this diary, together with 500 other diaries for the same period, remained largely unread. It was stored as part of the valuable Mass Observation Archive which was deposited at the University of Sussex in 1970. Between 1982 and 1984 it was edited for publication by Dorothy Sheridan, the Mass Observation archivist, in collaboration with Naomi Mitchison herself. It was first published as a book in 1985 by Gollancz as Among you taking notes: the wartime diary of Naomi Mitchison 1939-1945. This article is an account of the collaborative process of editing the original diary for publication and addresses questions of ownership, ethics and methodology raised by the process of editing life documents.

Abstract:
This paper examines the poetry of the two Palestinian American poets, Naomi Shihab Nye and Hala Alyan within the concept of the “thirdspace” of resistance literature. With this premise in mind, the study uses Edward Soja’s concept of “thirdspace” (1998) to examine the poetry of Naomi Shihab Nye and Hala Alyan as an articulation of “resistance poetry” exemplified in Ghassan Kanafani’s book entitled Resistance Literature in Occupied Palestine 1948-1966 (1966). The poem itself, as a form, is an imagined geography constructed by the poet’s personal and collective memories that build up his/her spaces of resistance poetry. In these artistic cartographies, memories traverse from contested lands and geographies to a “thirdspace” that recreates a timeline of stories and narratives that unfold the poems’ resistance manifesto. To foreshadow these imagined memories, the poem functions as: first, a documented tool of resistance to forgetfulness; second, an artistic device for articulating memory; third, a “thirdspace” where contested geographies of resistance and resilience dissolve to re-visioning history that curates hybridized literary spaces of prose poetry and cartographies of memory.

Abstract:
The article deals with a number of issues highlighted in the research of monumental painting during the 1960–2000s, and follows the development of art studies literature during the specified period. Ukrainian monumental painting during the second half of the 20th century evolved rather unequally, which affecte the art criticism reflections. In the 1960's and 80's the active and dynamic development of monumental art took place. Research in this area also reached the peak of its popularity. For example, the article of I. Pronina contains a review of publications from 1973–1974, and the author brought the statistics indicating more than 200 works. (180) Since the mid-1960's, academics have been increasingly focusing on monumental art. The attitude to monumental painting in the art history literature of the 1960's is ambiguous. However, most researchers are still critical of post-war practice and consider monumental works of the late 1950`s and 1960`s as a step forward. The distinctive differences between the 1960's and 1970's – 1980's lie in various attitudes towards themes and scenes of the monumental painting. In the 1960's the monumentality was associated with the laconic content, using a set of all understandable associative attributes. The expansion of the range of themes in monumental painting in the professional literature occured in the 1970's. Since the research problem stands at the crossroads of various branches of art, important scientific advancements were reflected in such prominent professional publications as: "Architecture of the USSR", "Decorative art of the USSR" and "Fine Arts". In the 1970's the publishing house "Soviet artist" released a series of articles compilations called "Soviet monumental art." The state of monumentalism significantly changes in 1990's as there was a significant decline in the activity of this artistic direction. At this time the monumental painting fell into the field of wide-scale artistic studies. In the professional literature of the last decade the scope of art study themes has changed to a certain extent as the art historians more often address the issues previously tabooed in Soviet times, and some of them partially or fully relate to the monumental painting. To such themes belong the Sixties and Boichukizm. Today the problem of the preservation of Soviet monumental works sharply appears. Many authors turn to the theme of monumental art in order to attract the attention of society to the rapid destruction of mosaics and wall murals, and to prove their value for Ukrainian fine arts.

Abstract:
Canadian Jewish integration was a social process that took place in the political sphere, but was also driven by everyday practices such as preparing and consuming food. Despite this, Jewish food history and the history of Canadian Jewish integration have been mostly investigated separately. This essay ties in with the work of Franca Iacovetta et al. and Donna Gabbaccia, who examined ethnic identity politics and food history in Canada and the USA as interrelated fields. To add to this research, this paper examines a Jewish community cookbook as a moment of Jewish-Canadian integration. By analyzing the Naomi Cook Book, published from 1928 to 1960 by Hadassah-WIZO in Toronto, this paper offers the alternative of exploring integration history as a history of everyday life. It argues that the cookbook is more than a recipe collection. By presenting specific ingredients, menus, and advertisements, it is promoting a narrative of Anglophone Canadian Jewish integration to a larger sociocultural frame of North American consumer culture. In doing so, it presents the history of Jewish-Canadian integration not as a linear sequence of steps on a ladder leading to completion, but as a process with both new and recurrent challenges, contradictions, and contestations.

Abstract:
Water supply availability has significant impacts on the biggest base for commodity grain production: The Sanjiang Plain in northeast China. The SWAT (soil and water assessment tool) model and IHACRES (identification of unit hydrographs and component flows from rainfall, evapotranspiration and streamflow data) model were used for modelling streamflow variability in the upper Naoli River watershed to determine the applicability of hydrological models to the marsh rivers. Both the SWAT and IHACRES models were suitable for streamflow simulation, having R2 (coefficient of determination) and NS (Nash–Sutcliffe) values greater than 0.7, and PBIAS (percent bias) smaller than 25%. The IHACRES model was easy to use, with less data-preparation, and was found to be a better choice for runoff simulation in a watershed less affected by human activity. The simulation result was better in primeval times, i.e., 1956–1966, than the period 1967–2005, when its performance was found to be unfavorable. In contrast, the complex, processes-based SWAT model was found to be more appropriate for simultaneously simulating streamflow variability. In addition, the effects of land use change and human activities in the watershed—where agricultural activities are intensive—were evaluated. The study found that the SWAT model was potentially suitable for water resource planning and management.

Abstract:
Hydrology helps determine the character of wetlands; wetlands, in turn, regulate water flow, which influences regional hydrology. To understand these dynamics, we studied the Naoli basin where, from 1954 to 2005, intensive marshland cultivation took place, and the watershed’s wetland area declined from94.4×104 ha to17.8×104 ha. More than 80% of the wetland area loss was due to conversion to farmland, especially from 1976 to 1986. The processes of transforming wetlands to cultivated land in the whole Naoli basin and subbasins can be described using a first order exponential decay model. To quantify the effects of wetlands cultivation, we analyzed daily rainfall and streamflow data measured from 1955 to 2005 at two stations (Baoqing Station and Caizuizi Station). We defined a streamflow regulation index (SRI) and applied a Mann-Kendall-Sneyers test to further analyze the data. As the wetland area decreased, the peak streamflow at the Caizuizi station increased, and less precipitation generated heavier peak flows, as the runoff was faster than before. The SRI from 1959 to 2005 showed an increasing trend; the SRI rate of increase was 0.05/10a, demonstrating that the watershed’s regulation of streamflow regulation was declined as the wetlands disappeared.

Abstract:
Oceanographically based mechanisms are shown to explain the spatial variation in the climatic relationship between the abundance of medusae (Aurelia aurita and Cyanea spp. of the class Scyphozoa), in the North Sea between 1971 and 1986 during June–August, and the winter (December–March) North Atlantic Oscillation Index (NAOI). A scyphomedusa population to the west of Denmark shows a strong inverse relationship between medusa abundance and fluctuations in the NAOI; the NAOI correlates strongly (P < 0.001) with both annual sea surface temperature (SST) at 6.5°E 56.5°N (1950–2008) and with winter precipitation on the Danish coast at Nordby (1900–2008) suggesting a direct link between the influence of climate and medusae abundance. In contrast, scyphomedusa abundance and distribution in the northern North Sea appears to be influenced by oceanic and mixed water inflow, which may overwhelm or mask any direct climatic influence on jellyfish abundance. Similarly, advection can also explain much of the interannual variability (1959–2000) in the abundance of other gelatinous zooplankton taxa (Cnidaria, Ctenophora and Siphonophora) in the northern North Sea as identified by the capture of gelatinous tissue and nematocysts (stinging cells) in Continuous Plankton Recorder samples. Jellyfish (Scyphozoa) in the southern North Sea may benefit from low temperature anomalies and the long-term effects of global warming might suppress Aurelia aurita and Cyanea spp. populations there. However, the biological response to temperature is complex and future research is required in this area.

Abstract:
The article briefly analyzes the further biography and creative development of graduate students of Kyiv State Institute of Arts, whose achievements in the field of book graphics were presented in 1977 at the Retrospective Exhibition of Theses of Art Colleges of the USSR in Leningrad. Their creative work has become significant for the development of Ukrainian book graphics. In the section of book graphics, 19 artists who defended their diploma works within the period of 1954 (H. Yakutovych, illustrations and registration to Ugrium-reka («Gloomy river»), a book by V. Shishkov, through 1975 (I. Zubkovska, illustrations and etchings to Smert u Kyievi («Death in Кyiv»)a book by P. Zahrebelny). With time, many of the graduate students who participated in the 1977 exibition became academicians or corresponding members of Academmy of Sciences, People`s and Honored artists of Ukraine, and winners of various awards. Some of them received the high title of winners of Taras Shevchenko State Prize of Ukraine for their further creative work. At the retrospective exhibition here in concern, the young Ukainian artists of the generation of 1960 th and 1970 th had clearly demonstrated their significant contribution to development of book graphical art despite the constant Communist ideological pres- sure on arts in the Soviet times. Synthesis of strong academic knowledge and free creative search helped many of them to reveal their great potentialities in the future. With time, the graphic artists here in concern managed to offer the strong creative output that once again, proved the high artistic level of Kyiv graphic school.

Abstract:
This paper explores practical applications of bivariate modelling via copulas of two likely dependent random variables, i.e., of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) coupled with extreme rainfall on the small island of Madeira, Portugal. Madeira, due to its small size (∼740 km2), very pronounced mountain landscape, and location in the North Atlantic, experiences a wide range of rainfall regimes, or microclimates, which hamper the analyses of extreme rainfall. Previous studies showed that the influence of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) on extreme rainfall is at its largest in the North Atlantic sector, with the likelihood of increased rainfall events from December through February, particularly during negative NAO phases. Thus, a copula-based approach was adopted for teleconnection, aiming at assigning return periods of daily values of an NAO index (NAOI) coupled with extreme daily rainfalls—for the period from December 1967 to February 2017—at six representative rain gauges of the island. The results show that (i) bivariate copulas describing the dependence characteristics of the underlying joint distributions may provide useful analytical expressions of the return periods of the coupled previous NAOI and extreme rainfall and (ii) that recent years show signs of increasing climate variability with more anomalous daily negative NAOI along with higher extreme rainfall events. These findings highlight the importance of multivariate modelling for teleconnections of prominent patterns of climate variability, such as the NAO, to extreme rainfall in North Atlantic regions, especially in small islands that are highly vulnerable to the effects of abrupt climate variability.

Abstract:
The beginning of the 20th century is a period of creative and printing experiments in the Ukrainian art. New generation of Ukrainian books was born in this period. The illustration of the children's books was a significant part of this process. Famous Ukrainian graphic artists, such as H. Narbut, M. Zhuk, O. Sudomora, V. Kononchuk, took part in the creation of a new Ukrainian children's book. Some little-known artists also worked with them, and their creativity was an important part of the artistic process. Petro Lapyn was one of those artists. From 1917 to 1929, he worked with the famous publishing houses, such as Vernyhora, Derzhavne Vydavnytstvo, Proliski, Knyhospilka and Rukh. Children's books, illustrated by P. Lapyn, are kept in the funds of the Pedagogical Museum of Ukraine, the National Library of Ukraine for Children, Ivan Fedorov Book Chamber of Ukraine and private collections. We have found about 30 of his projects. But the information about the artist himself and his life is quite limited. One of the first books he illustrated was the poem of S. Rudanskyi «Vovk, Sobaka ta Kit» («The Wolf, the Dog, and the Cat»), published in black and white in 1918. This early Petro Lapyn's work revealed his artistic outstanding peculiarities: vibrant linear drawing, harmonious combination of text and illustrations, variety of graphic techniques and skills in the representation of characteristic features. The high point of the artist's career is the illustration of «Crows and Owls», I. Franko’s fairy tale, printed in 1926 (Kharkiv, Rukh). It demonstrates the animalistic works of the artist. There are typical structural elements in fairy tale books: vignettes, drop caps. P. Lapyn uses decorative handwritten fonts and silhouette drawings for them. His graphic creations are full of emotions. Specific features of his work are: humour, emotionality, anthropomorphism, careful attitude towards literary material, and consistently high level of drawing.

Abstract:
In this brief report, the preeminent Palestinian expert on the archaeology of Jerusalem, Nazmi Jubeh, recapitulates the history of the city's three major Muslim burial grounds, particularly the Bab al-Rahmah cemetery. After outlining the millennial history of the cemetery, Jubeh places the assaults on Bab al-Rahmah, and the desecration of other Muslim cemeteries, in the context of Israel's efforts to Judaize Jerusalem—a policy that has been under way since the occupation of the eastern sector of the city during the June 1967 war. Jubeh reflects on decades of such Israeli efforts to eliminate or obfuscate the city's non-Jewish cultural landscape and on the equally persistent attempts by Palestinians to resist the historical and cultural erasure of Jerusalem's Arab and Muslim heritage.

Abstract:
The architecture of Ukraine of the 20s — the beginning of the 30s of the XXth century was characterized by the search for the national originality of forms based on the understanding of the merits of Ukrainian baroque and folk architecture, a further workshop of the interpretation of the classicism techniques and the receipt of the marked revolutionary romance of architecture. In the 1930s, the stylistic orientation of the architecture of the former USSR and its component part of Ukraine was replaced by directive decrees and the Decree of the Central Committee of the CPSU (b) “On the restructuring of literary and artistic organizations” (1932), created unions of writers, composers and architects. The resulting policy orientation on classical patterns as the basis of the creative method of socialist realism has become a phenomenon inherent in totalitarian regimes. The article discusses the many facets of the creative activity of V.G. Zabolotny, as an architect, scientist and educator, public figure, founder of the Ukrainian school of architecture, founder and president of the Academy of Architecture of the former USSR. The main stages of the work of the architect in the context of the history of the formation and development of Ukrainian architecture of the 30–60-ies of XX century are analyzed. One of the significant creative achievements of V. G. Zabolotny was the fruitful activity in the Academy Architecture of the USSR, which he created, it was discontinued in 1963. In 1992, it was reborn as a public organization — the Ukrainian Academy of Architecture (UAA), called to life by the new socio-economic conditions of the country's development. The UAA revival, continuing the tradition the Academy of Architecture, created byV. G. Zabolotny, makes a significant contribution to the development of Ukrainian architecture as one of the components of Ukrainian national culture. The materials on the multifaceted activity of V.G. Zabolotny presented in the article will contribute to the development of scientific researches on the history and theory architecture of Ukraine in the last century.

Abstract:
The author highlights specifics of designing Crimean Tatar housing accommodation in mountainous, piedmont and steppe areas of Crimea. The article presents the core principles and methods established over the thousands of years, i.e., the period people have resided in Crimea. The specifics of designing Crimean Tatar housing accommodation were identified, being inherent to the natural and climatic conditions of Crimea, as well as geomorphologic structure of the relief. All those specifics have been naturally reflected in the architectural and spacious planning of Crimean Tatar housing accommodation. The factual information employed for the purpose of this study was collected through in situ examinations of Crimea's historical buildings, studying the ad-hoc publications issued in 1880–1939, as kept in the library stock of BIKAMZ (Crimean historical museum preserve in Bakhchysarai), in the library stock of I. Hasprinskyi Scientific Library, sources from the museum stock in Simferopol, Bakhchysarai and private collections, architectural materials form the state owned depositories (the state archive of Crimean Oblast). No broad-scale studies have been undertaken in Crimea covering architecture of Crimean Tatar housing accommodation. Certain aspects of Crimean Tatar architecture are highlighted in the papers by: U. Bodadinskyi,B. A. Kuftin, Yu. V. Krykun, M. A. Voloshyn. The foregoing papers were published in the early XX century. They are mainly devoted to studying typology of Crimean Tatar housing accommodation. The important aspect concerns the architectural methods of forming areas built up with Crimean Tatar housing accommodation. The time proved the need in researching the Crimean Tatar housing accommodation, subject to the important features of using rationally the relief geometrical specifics, the rational geometry principles, creating certain preconditions for the architectural and planning specifics of the Crimean Tatar housing accommodation in the architectural system of Crimea.Unavailability of the overall picture covering specifics of the Crimean Tatar housing accommodation forming in Crimea, and evolution thereof relying on the scientific analysis, ravels estimation of the contemporary condition preventing establishment of the basic regularities and trends of development, preventing error-free handing the task of future development.

Abstract:
Abstract Bayesian statistical models were developed for the number of tropical cyclones, the rate at which these cyclones became hurricanes, and the rate at which hurricanes became category 4+ storms in the North Atlantic using data from 1966 to 2006 and from 1975 to 2006. It is found that, controlling for the cold tongue index (CTI), North Atlantic Oscillation index (NAOI), and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), it is improbable that the number of tropical cyclones has linearly increased since 1966, but that the number has increased since 1975. The differences between these two results have to do with the numbers of storms at the start of these two periods: it was easier to say a linear increase was present starting from circa 1975 since the storms in that period were at a low point. The rate at which storms become hurricanes appears to have decreased, and the rate at which category 4+ storms evolved from hurricanes appears to have increased. Both of these results are also dependent on the starting year. Storm intensity was also investigated by measuring the distribution of individual storm lifetimes in days, storm track length, and Emanuel’s power dissipation index. Little evidence was found that mean individual storm intensity has changed through time, but it is noted that the variability of intensity has certainly increased. Any increase in cumulative yearly storm intensity and potential destructiveness is therefore due to the increasing number of storms and not due to any increase in the intensity of individual storms. CTI was not always significant, but lower CTIs were associated with more storms, higher rates of conversion, and higher intensities. NAOI was only weakly associated: the effect was negative for the number of storms, the rate of hurricanes evolving from storms, and intensity, but it was positive for the rate of category 4+ storms evolving from hurricanes. AMO was rarely significant except in explaining the number of storms using the 1966–2006 data. Its direction was always positive as expected; however, higher values of the AMO were associated with more storms, higher rates of conversion, and higher intensities.

Abstract:
The 19th century is called the “golden age” of a children’s book. At this time, a variety of children’s literature appeared, first of all in Britain. The model of a decorated book are the books of Kelmscott Press. However, it was precisely at this time that a series of children’s books with a modest design at affordable prices, such as the so-called “one-penny” series “Books for the Bairns”, emerged. Ideologist and permanent editor of Books for the Bairns William T. Stead was a well-known journalist, founder and editor-in-chief of periodicals, public figure, child rights defender and a fighter against child prostitution. In 1912 he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, but scandalous reports, imprisonment, and his interest in spiritualism made W. Stead’s im- age controversial. The concept of the series, created by Sted, is based on a combination of an adapted simplified literary translation and a detailed step-by-step visual story that accompanies the text. The chief illustrator and visual co-author of W. Sted was the Irish artist B. Le Fanu (Brinsley Le Fanu, 1854–1929). For B. Le Fanu, the illustration of the series was the biggest art project. At his time, B. Le Fanu was known for the illustrations to the works of his father — Sheridan Le Fanu, one of the founders of the Irish mystical novel. They have the characteristic features of the Victorian era. Making illustrations for children’s books, B. Le Fanu does not lose their fantastic nature, but combines them with a realistic drawing. Each cover of the series represents one of the main characters of the book. A simple but vivid picture, one or two characters on the cover, a landscape or interior outlined by several elements — that’s what the covers by B. Le Fanu were like. None of them are decorated with patterns or ornamental details. The artist consistently implemented the concept of simplicity and clarity suggested by W. Sted, but not primitiveness. The best volumes in the series are his illustrations of L. Carroll’s “Alice’s in Wonderland” and M. Servantes’s novel “The Adventures of Don Quixote”. The “Books for the Bairns” series, although not exquisitely designed and illustrated, has become a model for children’s literature publishers for half a century and inspired the appearance of similar series of cheap children’s books in Western Europe and also Russia and Ukraine.

Abstract:
This article is dedicated to features of the late period in the icon painting of Ivan S. Yizhakevych which coincides with the religion persecution in the USSR as well as features of the study of icons in functional churches. In this paper we have set out the complex analysis of nomadic icons “Blessed Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus” and “Christ Enthroned” from Pokrovsky church in Priorka in Kyiv. By means of the visual research using the concentrated visible light and macro photography technical, technological and painting features of the icon painting have been specified.Based on the study of the painting layer features of the author icon painting style of Mr. Yizhakevych and stylistic features that are typical for his late creative period between 1940 and 1960 have been analyzed.Based on the comparative analysis between the above icons and other icons painted by Mr. Yizhakevych we have specified the attribution and considered the possibility of author icon finishing painting in a given period in order to return brightness to faded areas and restore partially lost ones. The possibility of repainting of separate parts of icons in order to specify dimensions of separate fragments or change in the compositional position of figures is also studied. In this paper we have specified typical techniques of the author style of Ivan S. Yizhakevych used by him for the primary layer of icons and author renewal and the assumption has been made that his students had likely helped him in preparation activities and painted parts of painting that are secondary according to their composition. Based on the analysis of the painting technique and features of Mr. Yizhakevych’s style the assumption have been made that the non-author finishing painting had been made approximately between 1990 and 2000 during one of the thorough repairs of the church. In this paper it has been established that the latter non-author renewals had significantly damaged the appearance of both icons by adding the rude and unprofessional performance to their separate elements which is not typical for the artist; this fact causes major difficulties when considering these icons to be integral works of Ivan S. Yizhakevych. This paper is illustrated by pictures of icons “Blessed Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus” and “Christ Enthroned” as well as their schematic images including the analysis of author and non-author renewals.

Abstract:
Abstract. The article is a publication of the memories of Yulii Mykolaiovych Yatchenko, a Ukrainian painter, graduate of the Kyiv State Art Institute (KSAI), student of S. Hryhoriev, M. Sharonov, H. Melikhov, and K. Ieleva. Yulii Yatchenko dedicated almost his entire life to pedagogical and organizational work: Director of the Republican Art Secondary School named after T.H. Shevchenko, Professor of the Department of Drawing and Vice-Rector for scientific work of the KSAI, as well as he headed the Directorate of Art Exhibitions of the Ministry of Culture of the USSR. The manuscript work «Memories of the Artist» of Yulii Mykolaiovych Yatchenko was prepared by him for printing in 2014. The manuscript contains two parts: «Memories of the Artist. The Story» and «Work on the Images of Princes and Kings». Now the first part is published, in which the author recalls both his training at the KSAI (now — «the NAFAA») and the methods of work and education of the teachers; describes moments of the creative process over the painting «With the Dream of Peace. Rescuing Works of Dresden Art Gallery by Soviet Troops in 1945» (1959) and other major paintings; revives in memories trips to Dresden and communication with the management of the Dresden Gallery, visits of the Ukrainian delegation for culture to Portugal, creative trips to Lithuania and Latvia, stay in Sedniv and Kanev; as if relives the pleasant moments associated with personal exhibitions in the halls of the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture. Yulii Yatchenko also draws attention to the issues of pedagogy, drawing teaching methods, reflects on the needs of creative youth. Finally, the author dives into his childhood memories, verbally describing his family and his ancestors. The feature of «Memories of the Artist» of Yulii Yatchenko is the absence of a rigid chronology and informality of presentation; the artist wrote down his own memories in the sequence in which they surfaced in his memory. After reading the «Memories», there is a feeling of personal communication with Yulii Mykolaiovych Yatchenko. The publication is a unique original testimony of the artist, a representative of that generation, whose creative path began in the difficult postwar period, in times of severe ideological constraints. The material of his memories is useful for teachers, graduate and undergraduate students, as well as connoisseurs of art in general and the creativity of Yulii Mykolaiovych Yatchenko in particular.

Abstract:
Groundwater is an important contributor to irrigation water supplies. The time lag between withdrawal and the subsequent impacts on the river corridor presents a challenge for water management. We highlight aspects of this challenge by examining trends in the groundwater levels and changes in groundwater management goals for the Namoi Catchment, which is within the Murray–Darling Basin, Australia. The first high-volume irrigation bore was installed in the cotton-growing districts in the Namoi Catchment in 1966. The development of high-yielding bores made accessible a vast new water supply, enabling cotton growers to buffer the droughts. Prior to the development of a groundwater resource it is difficult to accurately predict how the water at the point of withdrawal is hydraulically connected to recharge zones and nearby surface-water features. This is due to the heterogeneity of the sediments from which the water is withdrawn. It can take years or decades for the impact of groundwater withdrawal to be transmitted kilometres through the aquifer system. We present the analysis of both historical and new groundwater level and streamflow data to quantify the impacts of extensive groundwater withdrawals on the watertable, hydraulic gradients within the semi-confined aquifers, and the movement of water between rivers and aquifers. The results highlight the need to monitor the impacts of irrigated agriculture at both the regional and local scales, and the need for additional research on how to optimise the conjunctive use of both surface-water and groundwater to sustain irrigated agriculture while minimising the impact on groundwater-dependent ecosystems.

Abstract:
The rapid processes of global motorization, which Ukraine has not avoided, have a growing impact on various aspects of modern society, on the formation of a new urban environment and transport system. At the same time, to create favorable conditions for Ukraine's integration into the EU needs to address infrastructural issues: the systematic organization of facilities for storing cars in general in cities with the provision of their architecture- accessibility, versatility, economy, energy efficiency and more. First of all, this applies to the largest cities, where about 45% of the total urban population of the state live. An acute urban and transport problem is the problem associated with the allocation of areas for transport facilities: parking lots (garages), gas stations, service stations and other car service facilities. In the absence of free space, the cost of urban land increases. Based on this, there is an urgent need to develop modern methods and techniques that allow more efficient use of land resources. One of the possible methods of solving the problem of organizing parking lots is to build them into the lower floors of public buildings for various purposes. The generalization of foreign and domestic design and construction practices made it possible to determine that one of the first examples of built-in parking lots (garages) are two 60-storey residential and office centers in Chicago (USA) on the shores of Lake Michigan, called Marina City (1964). The construction of these centers gave impetus to the architectural and planning organization of buildings and structures for the rational solution of parking in the lower above-ground floors of residential buildings and public buildings and structures. The article summarizes foreign and domestic practice of designing and building such parking lots. It is determined that with a high density of buildings in Ukrainian cities, the method of embedding in the lower floors of public buildings and structures is developing. This reception will be in demand especially in the transition of vehicles to electric vehicles. At the same time, the analysis of domestic regulations on the placement of parking lots revealed the absence of provisions on the possibility of embedding them in the lower above-ground floors of public buildings and structures. However, in the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) countries and in the developed countries of the world, such provisions exist, which helps to increase the level of comfort of public services and allows rational and intensive use of the city. Based on the results of research and suggestions, it should be noted that the practice of design and construc- tion reveals the possibility of applying the existing requirements of current state building codes of Ukraine for underground garages, which should be extended and for car parks (garages) located on the lower above-ground floors of other buildings, in particular public buildings. This requires changes and additions to the current urban planning, typological and fire regulations, which are planned to be developed on the basis of this study.

Abstract:
This research explores moga’s (Japanese modern girl) representations in Tanizaki Jun’ichirō’s (1886-1965) literary texts. Examining moga’s position within Tanizaki’s writings, the study supports the idea that although moga was portrayed negatively by the Japanese media Tanizaki’s descriptions of moga can be approached differently. In the 1920s and 1930s moga drew attention due to her Westernized looks and the way she took an active part in the public space. For these reasons, she became an inspiration for many authors. This paper presents an overview of Tanizaki’s portrayal of modern girls. It looks into modes of objectification and types of women in Tanizaki’s earlier novels and short stories. This study surveys the following works: The Tattooer (Shisei, 1910), Kirin (1910), Professor Rado (1928) and Naomi (Chijin no ai, 1925). Through context-based analysis of Tanizaki Jun’ichirō’s selected literary works this study reveals the common patterns in the protagonists’ relationships with the modern girl analyzed within the theoretical framework of objectification, drawing on Martha Nussbaum’s idea of positive objectification and Sandra Lee Bartky’s concept of narcissism and the male gaze. Tanizaki introduces various types of the modern girl in his early novels and short stories, thus this research argues that moga in real life was a complex figure that cannot be simply categorized as a product of mass culture.

Abstract:
Rubashov — Honored Artist of Ukraine, Member of the National Union of Artists in Ukraine, Associ- ate Professor of the Department of Drawing the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture.Yurii Rubashov was born in Kyiv in 1947. After the end of the RCSU with the name of T. Shevchenko in 1965, he joined KSAI and till 1971 he studied in prominent Ukrainian graphists: V. Kasyana, I. Selivanov, V. Chebanyk. The artist turns to historical subjects and initiates graphic cycle, dedicated to the history of Kiev Rus and the activities of the kings who influenced the historical passing of events of that time.First of this thesis topic was a series of lithographs "Yaroslav the Wise" (1971), later — a series of graphic com- positions "Kiev Rus" (1979), a series of colored prints "Prince of Kiev", "Princess Olga, Svyatoslav, Vladimir, and Yaroslav the Wise (1992).The artist shows the greatest creative interest in landscape painting (cycles "On the Spain" (1982), "On the Sweden" (1985), "On the Jordan" (1983), "On the Armenia" (1983), "Roads of the Ukraine" (1996) and still life (Sweden Series, 2012–2013).It can be argued that Yu. Rubashov’s works absorbed the lyrics of landscapes with characteristic features of both southern and northern colors, and his still life is characterized by precise organization, a variety of styl- ized forms, which show confidence in the possession of the material and a balanced sense of compositional harmony. In the process of forming the author’s technique, he chooses the path of innovation and experiment, which in turn causes a peculiar interpretation of different technical means — a combination of materials and technologies of different nature. The artist exploits and applies multicolored pigments, oil pastels, watercolors and acrylic paints and the like, mixing everything with different solvents, which gives the opportunity to original express and crystallize a peculiar, author’s style.Drawing on the foundations of academic education, the artist experiments, seeks creative ideas and success- fully incorporates contemporary artistic problems into new imaginative solutions. This is a valuable example of growing skill and formation creative personality. In 2000 and 2015 he received first-degree diplomas All-Ukrainian Triennial of Graphic Arts, in 2012 — Di- ploma of the third stage of the exhibition-competition named G.Yakutovich.Yu. Rubashov fruitfully combines creative work with teaching. In the process of teaching his students, Yu. Rubashov not only lays the foundations of academic drawing, but also encourages to analyze creative material, to study and master the various drawing techniques and opportunities inherent in them.In the general process of contemporary search for an art, together with the academic pragmatism of the cur- riculum, the teacher, especially in the first courses of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Restoration, draws attention of the students in different artistic trends, teaches analytical and creative perception of natural objects and consciously approach the transformation of three-dimensional forms on a two-dimensional work plane of a paper sheet. These methodological principles meet the needs of modern times. The stylistic language of his works is recognizable and special. Not dwelling on what he has achieved, he im- parts his experience to the students, demonstrating the inexhaustible possibilities of drawing and the technical means of its implementation, including pastels. The high level of his works makes it possible to claim that Yu. Rubashov is a master of pastels and his contribution to the development of Ukrainian art is indisputable.

Abstract:
Abstract:
ABSTRACT Introduction The decalcification protocol of dentin surface with sodium hypochlorite removes the exposed collagen fibrils and could improve the longevity of the bonding interface. This study evaluated the influence of collagen removal with 10% sodium hypochlorite (10% NaOCl) on the longitudinal shear bond strength (SBS) of adhesives to dentin. Materials and methods Seventy-two extracted human molars were sectioned and the buccal and lingual surfaces were flattened and acid etched with 37% phosphoric acid for 15 seconds. The specimens were divided into six groups (n = 12 teeth – 24 sections), according to adhesive and collagen removal protocol: group 1: UNO Dentastic; group 2: Prime and Bond NT; group 3: Single Bond; group 4: 10% NaOCl + UNO Dentastic; group 5: 10% NaOCl + Prime and Bond NT; group 6: 10% NaOCl + Single Bond. Composite Z100 buildup was prepared, and the SBS test was assessed after 24 hours and 1 year. Data were submitted to three-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey tests (p < 0.05). Results The mean values (MPa) were for 24 hours: G1: 22.45B; G2: 7.90DE; G3: 12.56CD; G4: 19.85BC; G5: 33.73A; G6: 20.77B; and for 1 year: G1: 2.43E; G2: 2.26E; G3: 4.3DE; G4: 18.79BC; G5: 26.49AB; G6: 22.73B. Conclusion Dentin deproteinization treatment with 10% NaOCI influenced the SBS compared with conventional treatment. The negative influence on SBS detected for conventional groups at 1-year interval was not detected for deproteinized groups. Clinical relevance The longevity of hybrid layer is critical due to the hydrolysis process at the adhesive interface over time. The use of 10% NaOCl deproteinization protocol might improve the longevity of bonding in adhesive restorations. Abstract:
Abstract. Extreme droughts are weather phenomena of considerable importance, involving significant environmental and societal impacts. While those that have occurred in the comparatively recent period of instrumental measurement are identified and dated on the basis of systematic, machine-standardized meteorological and hydrological observations, droughts that took place in the pre-instrumental period are usually described only through the medium of documentary evidence. The extreme drought of 1842 in Europe presents a case in which information from documentary data can be combined with systematic instrumental observations. Seasonal, gridded European precipitation totals are used herein to describe general DJF, MAM, and JJA precipitation patterns. Annual variations in monthly temperatures and precipitation at individual stations are expressed with respect to a 1961–1990 reference period, supplemented by calculation of selected drought indices (Standardized Precipitation Index, SPI; Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index, SPEI; and Palmer Z index). The mean circulation patterns during the driest months are elucidated by means of sea-level pressure (SLP) maps, the North Atlantic Oscillation Index (NAOI), and the Central European Zonal Index (CEZI). Generally drier patterns in 1842 prevailed in January–February and at various intensities between April and August. The driest patterns in 1842 occurred in a broad zonal belt extending from France to eastern central Europe. A range of documentary data is used to describe the peculiarities of agricultural, hydrological, and socio-economic droughts, with particular attention to environmental and societal impacts and human responses to them. Although overall grain yields were not very strongly influenced, a particularly bad hay harvest, no aftermath (hay from a second cut), and low potato yields led to severe problems, especially for those who raised cattle. Finally, the 1842 drought is discussed in terms of long-term drought variability, European tree-ring-based scPDSI (self-calibrated Palmer Drought Severity Index) reconstruction, and the broader context of societal impacts.

Abstract:
The article focuses on two books of the poet, essayist, cultural historian Andrejs Johansons (1922–1983), contemplations and reminiscences “Rīgas svārki mugurā” (‘Dressed in Riga suit’, 1966) and “Visi Rīgas nami skan” (‘All the Houses of Riga are Ringing’, 1970). On the one hand, they include a very personal (biographical) layer of memory, and, on the other, they can also be viewed in the context of collective memory, as they are associated with the memories of many refugees of the World War II – about the lost Latvia, Riga and home. In May 1945, Johansons, leaving Kurzeme and Liepāja by one of the last refugee boats, also took with him the memories that were later recounted in the two books. The sense of belonging to a place is important for the author; this feeling is symbolically reflected in the titles of both books. But this belonging to a place becomes more capacious – it includes events, memories and a certain time of life. While writing these books, Johansons was able to return to Riga to see it with the eyes of his youth. In both books, Johansons has marked (almost topographically marked on the map) places where he had lived and walked, and studied, enriching these places with a broader context. On the one hand, they are youth memories, and on the other, they are the unfulfilled craving and lost paradise of a long-lived, wise and educated exile. The significant value of both books is the wide cultural and historical background, historical digressions, thorough source studies and research, and a panoramic view of Riga, the capital of Latvia. The memory and reflection books about Riga by Johansons are changing, and because of this changing character, they are more than just memories. They are rich cultural, historical, and personal sketches. They make it possible to feel and even visually see Riga of the late 20s to early 40s of the 20th century. These books can inspire a 21st-century reader, a resident of Riga; they can stimulate to explore and find out about the city through its historical changes. The two books have become encyclopaedic editions that vividly and amply reveal the time, era, historical and cultural context, personalities and their destinies. Johansons’s books about Riga encourage us to look at the image of Riga in the literary works and memories of other writers, gaining a more colourful view.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction We present a case of nocturnal tachypnea secondary to suspected auto-triggering in a patient on Bilevel device. Auto-triggering is a patient-ventilator asynchrony in which a ventilator breath is triggered in the absence of inspiratory muscle activity. This phenomenon was mostly described in postcardiac surgery and in brain dead patients on mechanical ventilation. Detecting this asynchrony is important as it can lead to patient discomfort, poor compliance and hypocarbia that can lead to apneic events. Report of Cases: An 82-year-old male with history of chronic atrial fibrillation, coronary artery disease (s/p bypass surgery) and Ischemic cardiomyopathy (EF 25-30%). He had moderate obstructive sleep apnea with central apnea. He was started on AutoPAP then was upgraded to BPAP (IPAP 16/EPAP 9 cmH2O). His wife reported episodes of nocturnal tachypnea and increased daytime somnolence. This was confirmed by the compliance reports from his BPAP device, and a portable sleep study obtained while using the BPAP (respiratory rate > 40 breaths/minute). Conclusion Vignaux et al estimated the incidence of auto-triggering with NIV to be 13%. This phenomenon can be caused by a major circuit leak or secondary to cardiogenic oscillations. Effect of cardiogenic oscillation on the pulmonary air flow was described by West and Hugh-Jones in 1961. Our patient had dilated cardiomyopathy with hyperdynamic circulation which we believe was the major cause of his auto-triggering asynchrony. Changes in intracardiac volume and cardiac movements during systole resulted in intrapulmonary flow oscillations exceeding the set flow-trigger threshold leading to the tachypnea. In our patient, the events resolved after cardiac resynchronization procedure that improved the overall cardiac function and adjusting the trigger sensitivity.
