Abstract:
Odontochilus Blume (1859: 79) comprises about 40 species distributed from the Himalayas and China through Southeast Asia eastwards to the southwestern Pacific islands (Chen et al. 2009, Pearce & Cribb 2002, Pridgeon et al. 2003). Most species are restricted to tropical and warm-temperate regions. The genus is closely related with Anoectochilus Blume (1825: 411) and most of species were in the past included in that genus because both genera have flowers with pectinate or dentate (rarely smooth) lip flanges. However, Odontochilus is separated from Anoectochilus based on the saccate non-exerted spur that is largely enclosed by the bases of the lateral sepals, whereas Anoectochilus has an exerted conical or cylindrical spur (Pridgeon et al. 2003).

Abstract:
Shiing-Shen Chern was a towering figure in mathematics, both for his contributions to differential geometry and as a source of inspiration and encouragement for all mathematicians, and particularly those in China. Born in the final year of the Qing dynasty, and educated at a time when China was only beginning to set up Western-style universities, he lived to preside over the 2002 International Congress of Mathematicians in Beijing. He was a co-founder of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley and its first Director in 1981; he also set up the Nankai Institute for Mathematics in 1985. His contributions to differential geometry were of foundational importance for the global viewpoint that developed in the postwar years, and the mathematical tools he introduced are now the common currency in geometry, topology and even aspects of theoretical physics.

Abstract:
In recent years, intense efforts have been focused on stabilization of silicon-based anode in Li ion secondary batteries due to their remarkably high theoretical capacity. At the same time, strategy has not yet been established on how to stabilize the silicon based anode sufficiently during long cycles so that it will be feasible for practical use. In this talk, several different approaches on stabilization of silicon-based anode will be introduced both in terms of polymer binders design and active materials design. Our group synthesized several self-healing polymer binder and polymer coating material which are efficient for the use in silicon-based anode. Poly(borosiloxane) (PBS)1 was prepared by dehydrocoupling polymerization between mesitylborane and diphenylsilanediol in the presence of transition metal catalyst. PBS was found to show self-healing property at 45oC when coated onto Si electrode. When PBS coated Si electrode was employed for anodic half cell (Si/EC:DEC (1/1=v/v)/Li), it showed much improved durability when compared with PVDF coated Si based cell or bare Si based cell. We also reported a design of BIAN (bis-imino-acenaphthene) based conjugated polymer (P-BIAN) /Poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) composite binder for Si based anode2,3. Due to combination of n-type imine-based conjugated polymer (H-bonding acceptor) and PAA (H-bonding donor), synergistic effect in stabilization of Si/C composite anode was observed due to both of desirable electronic structure of P-BIAN and H-bonding based self-healing properties. In this system, anodic half cell delivered specific discharging capacity of above 2000 mAhg-1 for 600 cycles. As alternative approaches, we are also working on preparation of specific Si based anodic active materials which showed extremely high durability. b-SiC/N-doped carbon4 was found to show excellent durability even in the presence of conventional binder materials due to restricted volumetric changes of b-SiC during lithiation/delithiation. We also report coating of mechanically highly robust silicon oxycarbide on micro silicon5, which was also found to be quite effective. References 1) Patnaik, S. G.; Jayakumar, T. P.; Sawamura, Y. The genera Andreimyrme and Sinotilla are newly recorded from Japan. Nemka wotani (Zavattari, 1913) and Ephucilla naja (Zavattari, 1913) are excluded from the Japanese fauna. New synonymies are proposed for N. wotani (Zavattari, 1913) [=Smicromyrme chihpenchia Tsuneki, 1993, syn. nov.], N. limi limi (Chen, 1957) [=Smicromyrme limi nanhai Chen, 1957, syn. nov.], A. substriolata [=Smicromyrme tridentiens Chen, 1957, syn. nov.] and Neotrogaspidia pustulata (Smith, 1873) [=Smicromyrme yakushimensis Yasumatsu, 1934, syn. nov.]. Phimenes flavopictus formosanus (Zimmermann, 1931) (Hymenoptera: Vespidae: Eumeninae) is recorded as a host of Ephucilla brevitegula. Other new records include: Mickelomyrme athalia (Pagden, 1934) from China (Guangdong, Fujian, Yunnan) and Vietnam (Hoa Binh), M. bakeri (Mickel, 1934) from Malaysia (Borneo) and Indonesia (Sulawesi), M. pusillaeformis (Hammer, 1962) from Indonesia (Bali), Andreimyrme sarawakensis Lelej, 1996 from Peninsular Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur) and A. substriolata from Laos (Xiengkhouang, Houapanh), Thailand (Chiang Mai), Peninsular Malaysia (Kuala Terengganu) and Indonesia (Sumatra). Distributions of Japanese smicromyrmine species are classified into the following three patterns: Asian continental-Palaearctic Japan (Sm. lewisi and N. yasumatsui), Taiwan-Ryûkyû (M. hageni, E. yoshitakei, E. suginoi, E. brevitegula, Si. jambar) and Asian continental-Ryûkyû (A. substriolata). Species of Asian continental-Palaearctic Japan are widely distributed in Palaearctic part of Japan and eastern part of Eurasia, or have the closest relative in continental Asia. They are considered to be native to Japan since it was a part of Eurasia, or have immigrated to Japan through the land bridge between Korean Peninsula and Japan by the end of the Upper Pleistocene. The Taiwan-Ryûkyû species are immigrants from Taiwan through the land bridge. The Asian continental-Ryûkyû species is presumed to have immigrated to Japan during the Upper Pleistocene when the eastern edge of Eurasian Continent was close to Amami-ôshima Is.

Abstract:
A complete taxonomic catalogue of the Stick and Leaf-insects (Phasmatodea) recorded or described from the mainland China (excluding Taiwan) is presented. 241 valid species are listed, which are currently attributed to 50 genera, 5 families and 7 subfamilies. Genera and species are listed alphabetically. All available type-data is provided based mainly on literary sources for species described by Chinese workers from 1986 to 2006, including documented depository of typespecimens. The catalogue therefore also provides complete lists of the type-material of Phasmatodea housed in the following Chinese institutions: Administration of Baishuijiang Natural Reserve (ABNR), Beijing Forestry University, Beijing (BFU), China Agricultural University, Beijing (CAU), Geological Museum of China, Beijing (GMC), Inca Science Ltd., Chongqing (INCA), Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing (IZCAS), Department of Biology, Nankai University, Tianjin (NKU), Northwest Sci-Tech University of Agriculture and Forestry, Shaanxi (NWAU), Institute of Zoology, Shaanxi Normal University, Xi’an (SNU), Institute of Entomology, Sun Yat-sen University (ICRI), Shanghai Institute of Entomology, Academia Sinica, Shanghai (SIES), Tianjin Natural History Museum, Tianjin (TMNH), Zhejiang Museum of Natural History, Hangzhou (ZMNH). The known distribution of each species, inmeans of provinces is provided as well. 14 species are shown to have been recorded from China in error, several of these based on misidentifications. The “Phasmatodea-like” fossil taxa described from the Late Jurassic Yixian Formation of North Hebei and West Liaoning are listed in a separate section. Two new generic synonyms are recognized: Arthminotus Bi, 1995 synonymised with Lopaphus Westwood, 1859 (n. syn.) and Dianphasma Chen & He, 1997 synonymised with Parasosibia Redtenbacher, 1908 (n. syn.). The genus Linocerus Gray, 1835 (Type-species: Linocerus gracilis Gray, 1835) was erroneously synonymised with the mediterranean Bacillus St. Fargeau & Audinet-Serville, 1825 and is here re-established in Phasmatidae: Pachymorphinae: Gratidiini (rev. stat.). Relationship to Clonaria Stål, 1875 (= Gratidia Stål, 1875, = Paraclonaria Brunner v. Wattenwyl, 1893), Sceptrophasma Brock & Seow-Choen, 2000 and Macellina Uvarov, 1940 is obvious. 21 species are transferred to other genera (new combinations): Asceles dilatatus Chen & He, 2004 and Asceles quadriguttatus Chen & He, 1996 to Pachyscia Redtenbacher, 1908, Arthminotus sinensis Bi, 1995 to Lopaphus Westwood, 1859, Baculum dolichocercatum Bi & Wang, 1998 and Baculum politum Chen & He, 1997 to Medauroidea Zompro, 1999, Dixippus hainanensis Chen & He, 2002, Dixippus huapingensis Bi & Li, 1991, Dixippus nigroantennatus Chen & He, 2002, Dixippus parvus Chen & He, 2002 and Entoria bobaiensis Chen, 1986 to Lonchodes Gray, 1835, Sipyloidea obvius Chen & He, 1995 to Sinophasma Günther, 1940, Paramyronides biconiferus Bi, 1993, Paramyronides leishanensis Bi, 1992, Lonchodes chinensis Brunner v. Wattenwyl, 1907, Lonchodes confucius Westwood, 1859 and Phasgania glabra Günther, 1940 to Phraortes Stål, 1875, Gratidia bituberculata Redtenbacher, 1889 and Leptynia xinganensis Chen & He, 1993 to Sceptrophasma Brock & Seow-Choen, 2002, Prosentoria bannaensis Chen & He, 1997 to Paraentoria Chen & He, 1997, and Mantis squeleton Olivier, 1792 to Phanocloidea Zompro, 2002. Acrophylla sichuanensis Chen & He, 2001 remains of unknown generic assignment, but is shown to be not a member of the Australian genus Acrophylla Gray, 1835. Furthermore, as Baculum Saussure, 1861 is a neotropical genus and most Old World species previously attributed to this genus are now listed in Ramulus Saussure, 1861, all Chinese species described in Baculum Saussure are consequently transferred to Ramulus Saussure. Other changes of specific placements are based on published literature and concern to the following three synonymies not recognized by Chinese workers: Abrosoma Redtenbacher, 1906 (= Prosceles Uvarov, 1940), Necroscia Audinet-Serville, 1838 (= Aruanoidea Redtenbacher, 1908), Lopaphus Westwood, 1859 (= Paramyronides Redtenbacher, 1908). Megalophasma Bi, 1995 is transferred from Necrosciinae to Lonchodinae. Four lectotypes are designated and three new specific synonyms revealed. A lectotype is designated for Rhamphophasma modestus Brunner v. Wattenwyl, 1893, the type-species of Rhamphophasma Brunner v. Wattenwyl, 1893, in order to fix this genus and species. The male paralectotype is shown to be a male of Parapachymorpha nigra Brunner v. Wattenwyl, 1893, the type-species of Parapachymorpha Brunner v. Wattenwyl, 1893. Clitumnus porrectus Brunner v. Wattenwyl, 1907 is synonymised with Bacillus ? artemis Westwood, 1859 and a lectotype designated for the former (n. syn.). A lectotype is designated for Oxyartes lamellatus Kirby, 1904 in order to fix this taxon and confirm the synonymy established by Dohrn, 1910 (= Oxyartes honestus Redtenbacher, 1908, = Oxyartes spinosissimus Carl, 1913). Paracentema stephanus Redtenbacher, 1908 is shown to have been erroneously synonymised with Neohirasea japonica (de Haan, 1842) and here synonymised with Neohirasea maerens (Brunner v. Wattenwyl, 1907) (n. syn.). In order to fix this new synonymy a lectotype is designated for Paracentema stephanus Redtenbacher, 1908. Finally, a biogeographic analysis of the Chinese phasmid fauna is presented. This includes brief background information on the topography and biogeography of China along with maps showing the seven zoogeographical subregions currently recognized as well as the 4 municipalities, 23 provinces, 5 autonomous regions and 2 special administrative regions of China. A summary of the taxonomic compilation of the fauna is provided and its relationships with neighbouring regions, of both the Palaearctic and Oriental realms, are discussed. A study is presented on the distribution of the taxa and species densities of each province / autonomous region. Recent ecological studies are summarized and list of the host plants of 42 different species attached. The pest status of certain species which have become of serious importance for agriculture in China is briefly summarized based on literary sources.

Abstract:
Pulsars are rapidly rotating neutron stars that emit electromagnetic radiation signals received as periodic pulses, thereby acting as cosmic lighthouses. The excellent stability of these periodic signals makes them invaluable tools for assessing the theory of general relativity and for detecting low frequency gravitational waves. However, their observation by radio telescopes can be made difficult by radio frequency interference (RFI) of various origins. These interferences can alter the pulsar signals, which may significantly complicate the detection and precise extraction of their signatures. This thesis aims to propose deep learning techniques to mitigate the impact of RFI in pulsar observations. In particular, this thesis illustrates the interest of these methods in the case of observations carried out by NenuFAR, a pathfinder for the low-frequency segment of the upcoming Square Kilometre Array (SKA).The first part of this thesis begins presenting the astrophysical background of pulsars, emphasizing their importance and role in contemporary astronomy. It then introduces the NenuFAR radio telescope, detailing its technical specifications, observational capabilities, and unique advantages in low-frequency pulsar observations. Lastly, it reviews and summarizes RFI mitigation methods in radio astronomy, analyzing the limitations of existing technologies and identifying the key issues this thesis aims to address. In particular, current RFI mitigation methods often lead to the deletion of data identified as affected by RFI, which inevitably results in a loss of valuable information. In the second part of this thesis, we first present a simulation framework designed to generate RFI-corrupted pulsar observation data. The main goal of this framework is to build a dataset that allows the training of deep learning models, thus circumventing the recurring lack of properly labeled real data. After a thorough review of deep learning and convolutional neural networks, we highlight the shortcomings of existing RFI processing methods, which typically involve identifying and removing data suspected of being corrupted by RFI. To avoid this information loss and address this challenge, we propose a novel approach that consists in formulating the RFI attenuation problem as an image restoration task, aiming at reconstructing RFI-altered signals. Capitalizing on recent advances in deep learning, we show that this task can be efficiently achieved using a network, named RFI-DRUnet, whose architecture is inspired by a high-performance denoising network. In the following chapters, we illustrate the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed approach on simulated and real pulsar observation data, comparing it to current approaches based on deep convolutional neural networks that detect RFI. The results show that the proposed method can effectively restore RFI-corrupted observational signals under various conditions. Furthermore, we discuss the potential impact of this method for improving pulsar chronometry

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis hypothesizes that literary creation, being the ground of a no-structured and undeveloped thought, without any aim to become a generalizing and closed system, allows to put questions and to give several anthropological and cultural interpretations about the human being and the world. Therefore this thesis proposes an analysis of Nancy Huston’s work, novelist of the extreme contemporary, connecting a current feminist perspective on sexual difference with ethical issues and contemporary politics; both referring to the displacement of identity and cultural borders. My work is based on heterogeneous critical sources and reflections: on the one hand the deconstruction post-structuralist notion which lays down the ground for discussions about binary and universalist thought whereas on the other hand stay feminist thinkers inspired by Hanna Arendt’ thought which stresses the value of singularity belonging to a plural community of different beings. Far from reaching a synthesis between these positions Huston’s work appears as an example of articulation of these issues in which both the questioning of sexual difference and poetic relationship are redefined through a practice of thought at work in the literary text

Abstract:
In this thesis, we have undertaken a stylistic study of metonymy in Emile Zola's following four works : L'Assommoir, Une Page d'Amour, Nana and Pot-Bouille. In so doing, we have selected among the various study fields in stylistics those that allow to examine this figure which is permeating Zola's text. Our aim is to demonstrate that the figure constitutes a prevalence. Moreover, it accounts for the author's ceaseless discursive creativity. The metonymy we have found out throughout these texts shows itself under various typological, grammatical and enunciative forms. Besides, inserted into a literary text, it is the object of considerable pragmatic work on the fictional, thematic and symbolic levels and also on the aesthetic and literary plan. We have realised that a real poetic dimension emanates from the text thanks to the figure called metonymy. First, from the thematic point of view, and thanks to this figure, Zola was able to expose the ridicule of society under the Second Empire. He thus made use of this device in a remarkable way in order to relate literature to science and try to explain the relationship of man with his milieu. Second, thanks to metonymy, a number of lyric and poetic qualities animate the text. If metaphor is the device of imaginary, metonymy is that of “truth and light”, therefore of reality as well as of the imaginary. This characteristic makes metonymy an original trope of the “zolian” text, an actual “novel-poem”

Abstract:
This research stems from a ten-year experience of Adapted Physical Activities with children and teenagers who were hospitalised in an hemato-oncology ward. This research aims at describing and theorising the impact of ludic adapted physical activities on children, teenagers, the medical staff, and the members of the APA team. The unconscious aspects of the relationships between these intervenants have been studied, where individuals responded in their own way to the difficult time they had to go through. The research emphasises the importance, complexity and particularity of the pedagogical and human relationships - all the more because the APA are proposed to patients whose body also showed signs of suffering from a lethal disease. I attempted to define the nature of the necessary transference between the young patient and the person who engaged him in practising the APA. This was achieved in a constant to and fro between on-the-field practice and analysis of psychanalytical theory. The assumption was that it was necessary to analyse the APA sessions and their effects in light of the transference that had emerged between the patient and the APA teacher. The member of the APA team will then use his unconscious knowledge of this one to one relationship to adapt to the patient, and by this broaden and modify his/her theoretical approach to pedagogy and research

Abstract:
Situated on both sides of the Russian-Chinese border, the Nanais are one of the populations living in the Amur region. In China, they are called Hezhe. From the Manchu incursion in the northern part of this region, which was followed by the different Russian attempts at colonization, the Nanais have adapted their way of life, culture and religion as the Amur went through economic, geopolitical and social changes. On both sides of the frontier, as a political and research topic, undergoing russification since the second half of the 19th century, and sinicization before that, the fragmented cultural “identity” of the Nanais is the reflection of these different issues. In this PhD thesis in anthropology, I endeavor to analyze the different modes of expression of « identity » used by the Nanais or the Hezhe to study how disruptions or continuities brought by the region’s recent history to a culture considered as traditional are addressed. In Russia, until the 1970s, according to the Nanai religious shamanistic system, the souls of the living and of the dead were dealt with by a shaman and by complex sets of rituals. Following the end of the soviet regime, since the end of the 1990s, the shamans have disappeared. As a result of their disappearance, to the russification of the way of life and to the arrival of orthodox and protestant missionaries, the Nanai religious practices have become plural. This can be seen in the ritual adaptations made to compensate the shamans’ absence, in the cultural elements considered as essentially “Nanai”, and in the conversions to different forms of Christianity. The question of the perception – be it emic or not – of the Nanai “identity” can therefore be raised. This thesis is divided into three parts. The first one focusses on the transformations brought to the funerary practices and their limits, seen in the presence of harmful souls and spirits. The second one deals with the role of embroideries in the conception of a visible Nanai or Hezhe “identity,” staged for the “safeguarding” of practices considered as native. The third one centers on the conversions to Christian movements established in the region, to show two possible ways of becoming Christian, fluctuating between historical continuity and systemic disruption. The religious and cultural interactions give rise to different forms of indigenous appropriations which ensure the continuity of the shamanistic representations. The transformation of these practices also leads to the emic perception of a « loss » of culture. The question of the perception of disruptions or continuities regarding a culture considered as traditional lies in the analysis of these plural practices. The study of these different aspects enables my analysis to be centered on three main themes: 1) the analysis of the dealing with the spirits and the souls highlights the historical continuity of Nanai shamanistic representations while also underlining the emic perception of the “loss” of culture considered as traditional; 2) the identification of practices considered as essentially “Nanai”, “Hezhe” and/or “traditional” raises the question of what it means to “be Nanai” today (for the Nanais themselves and for the non-Nanais); 3) the adaptation of shamanistic practices and the adoption of new ones show an ambivalent and changing position concerning the desire to break with shamanistic representations or to maintain some of their features. In the study of the funerary adaptations, of cultural demonstrations and of conversions to different forms of Christianity, these three themes show that the plurality of practices actually convey different modes of expressions of the contemporary Nanai “identity”

Ed. 2014, 53, 3387) (pinacolato)borane to the enone 5 to give 6, that was readily oxidized to the tertiary alcohol. Matthias Breuning of the University of Bayreuth designed (Chem. Commun. 2014, 50, 6623) a Cu catalyst for the enantioselective Henry addition of nitromethane to the aldehyde 7 to give 8. Benjamin List of the Max-Planck-Institute für Kohlenforschung optimized (Synlett 2014, 25, 932) the proline-catalyzed formation of the aldol product 10 from the aldehyde 9. Christian Wolf of Georgetown University devised (Chem. Commun. 2014, 50, 3151) the alkyne 12, that could be added to the aldehyde 11 to give 13 in high ee. Keiji Maruoka of Kyoto University developed (Org. Abstract:
Shou-Fei Zhu of Nankai University developed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2014, 53, 13188) an iron catalyst that effected the enantioselective cyclization of 1 to 2. Bypassing diazo precursors, Junliang Zhang of East China Normal University used (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2014, 53, 13751) a gold catalyst to cyclize 3 to 4. Taking advantage of energy transfer from a catalytic Ir complex, Chuo Chen of University of Texas Southwestern carried out (Science 2014, 346, 219) intramolecular 2+2 cycloaddition of 5, leading, after dithiane formation, to the cyclobutane 6. Intramolecular ketene cycloaddition has been limited in scope. Liming Zhang of the University of California Santa Barbara found (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2014, 53, 9572) that intramolecular oxidation of an intermediate Ru vinylidene led to a species that cyclized to the cyclobutanone 8. James D. White of Oregon State University devised (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2014, 136, 13578) an iron catalyst that mediated the enantioselective Conia-ene cyclization of 9 to 10. Xiaoming Feng of Sichuan University observed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2014, 53, 11579) that the Ni-catalyzed Claisen rearrangement of 11 proceeded with high diastereo- and enantiocontrol. The relative configuration of the product 12 was not reported. Robert H. Grubbs of Caltech showed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2014, 136, 13029) that ring opening cross metathesis of 13 with 14 delivered the Z product 15. Mn(III) cyclization has in the past required a stoichiometric amount of inorganic oxidant. Sangho Koo of Myong Ji University found (Adv. Synth. Catal. 2014, 356, 3059) that by adding a Co co- catalyst, air could serve as the stoichiometric oxidant. Indeed, 16 could be cyclized to 17 using inexpensive Mn(II). Matthias Beller of the Leibniz-Institüt für Katalyse prepared (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2014, 53, 13049) the cyclohexene 20 by coupling the racemic alcohol 18 with the amine 19. Paultheo von Zezschwitz of Philipps-Universität Marburg added (Chem. Commun. 2014, 50, 15897) diethyl zinc in a conjugate sense to 21, then reduced the product to give 22. Depending on the reduction method, either diastereomer of the product could be made dominant. Nuno Maulide of the University of Vienna displaced (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2014, 53, 7068) the racemic chloride 23 with diethyl zinc to give 24 as a single diastereomer.

An intramolecular Larock indole synthesis was employed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013, 52, 4902) by Yanxing Jia at Peking University for the conversion of aniline 3 to tricyclic indole 4. The reaction of boronodiene 5 with nitrosobenzene to produce pyrrole 6 was reported (Chem. Commun. 2013, 49, 5414) by Bertrand Carboni at CNRS University of Rennes and Andrew Whiting at Durham University. The merger of imine 7 with propargyl amine 8 in the presence of a strong base, leading to pyrrole 9, was disclosed (Org. Lett. 2013, 15, 3146) by Boshun Wan at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Bin Li and Baiquan Wang at Nankai University found (Org. Lett. 2013, 15, 136) that pyrrole 12 could be prepared by the oxidative annulation of enamide 10 with alkyne 11 via ruthenium catalysis in the presence of copper(II). Naohiko Yoshikai at Nanyang Technological University demonstrated (Org. Lett. 2013, 15, 1966) that N-allyl imine 13 could be cyclized to pyrrole 14 via dehydrogenative intramolecular Heck cyclization. Rhett Kempe at the University of Bayreuth developed (Nature Chem. 2013, 5, 140) a “sustainable” pyrrole synthesis in which iridium complex 17 catalyzed the dehydrogenative coupling of alcohol 15 and phenylalaninol (16) to produce pyrrole 18. In a related process, David Milstein at the Weizmann Institute of Science found (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013, 52, 4012) that the ruthenium complex 20 effected the transformation of 2-octanol (19) and 16 to furnish pyrrole 21. An alternative ruthenium-catalyzed pyrrole synthesis from readily available components was developed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013, 52, 597) by Matthias Beller, allowing for the preparation of 25 from ketone 22, diol 23, and amine 24. Meanwhile, with a bit of hetero-aromatic alchemy, Huw M.L. Davies at Emory University converted (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2013, 135, 4716) the furan 26 to pyrrole 28 by reaction with triazole 27 under rhodium catalysis. Professor Kempe also developed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013, 52, 6326) a method for the synthesis of pyridine 30 from amino alcohol 29 and propanol using an iridium catalyst closely related to 17.

Computational analysis of the Novozyme 435 active site led (Tetrahedron Lett. 2010, 51, 309) Liyan Dai and Hongwei Yu of Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, to t-butanol for the enantioselective monoesterification of 1 to 2. Bruce H. Lipshutz of the University of California, Santa Barbara, devised (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 7852) a Cu catalyst that mediated the enantioselective 1,2-reduction of α-branched enones such as 3. Qi-Lin Zhou of Nankai University found (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 1172) that an α-alkoxy unsaturated acid 5 could be hydrogenated with high ee. Tohru Yamada of Keio University desymmetrized (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 4072) the tertiary alcohol 7, delivering the enol lactone 8. Zachary D. Aron of Indiana University established (Organic Lett. 2010, 12, 1916) that the simple aldehyde 10 effected rapid racemization of the α-amino ester 9. Running the epimerization in the presence of an enantioselective esterase produced 11 high ee. Robert A. Batey of the University of Toronto devised (Organic Lett. 2010, 12, 260) a Pd catalyst for the enantioselective rearrangement of 12 to 13. In the course of a synthesis of dapoxetine, Hyeon-Kyu Lee of the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology showed (J. Org. Chem. 2010, 75, 237) that the Rh*-mediated intramolecular C-H insertion of 14 to 15, as developed by Du Bois, gave the opposite absolute configuration to that originally assigned. To prepare α-quaternary amines, Thomas G. Back of the University of Calgary explored (J. Org. Chem. 2010, 75, 1612) the selectivity of the PLE hydrolysis of esters such as 16. Daniel R. Fandrick and colleagues at Boehringer Ingelheim reported (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 7600) a general method for the catalytic enantioselective propargylation of aldehydes, including 18. Dennis G. Hall of the University of Alberta devised (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 5544) a route to α-hydroxy esters such as 22 by enantioselective conjugate addition to 21. Alexandre Alexakis of the University of Geneva prepared (Chem. Commun. 2010, 46, 4085) disubstituted epoxides such as 25 by the conjugate addition of 23 to 24.

Abstract:
Manfred T. Reetz at the Max-Planck-Institut Mülheim and Philipps-Universität Marburg developed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2013, 135, 1665) a mutated Thermoethanolicus brockii alcohol dehydrogenase for the enantioselective reduction of 4-alkylidene cyclohexanone 1. Using a new C₂-symmetic chiral bisphosphine ligand (Wingphos, 5), Wenjun Tang at the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry reported (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013, 52, 4235) the rhodium-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of β-aryl enamide 3. Qi-Lin Zhou of Nankai University utilized chiral spirophosphine oxazoline iridium complexes 8a and 8b for the asymmetric hydrogenation of unsaturated piperidine carboxylic acid 6 (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013, 52, 6072) and 1,1-diarylethylene 9 (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013, 52, 1556) with excellent selectivities. The iron- catalyzed chemoselective hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated aldehyde 11 was demonstrated (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013, 52, 5120) by Matthias Beller at the University of Rostock. Jeffrey S. Johnson at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill showed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2013, 135, 594) that asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of racemic acyl phosphonate 14 yielded β-stereogenic α- hydroxy phosphonate 16, a reversal in diastereoselectivity observed in the case of α-keto ester analogues. Gojko Lalic of the University of Washington developed (Org. Lett. 2013, 15, 1112) a monophasic copper catalyst system for the selective semireduction of terminal alkyne 17. Alois Fürstner and coworkers at Max-Planck-Institut Mülheim reported (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013, 52, 355) the ruthenium-catalyzed trans- selective hydrogenation of alkyne 19. Macrocyclic alkynes could also be selectively hydrogenated to E- alkenes using this methodology. Bernhard Breit at the University of Freiburg found (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013, 52, 2231) that a bimetallic Pd/ Re/ graphite catalyst system was highly active for the hydrogenation of tertiary amide 21 to amine 22. Professor Beller also discovered (Chem. Eur. J. 2013, 19, 4437) that a commercially available ruthenium complex allowed for the effective transfer hydrogenation of aromatic nitrile 23 to benzyl amine 24. Notably, no reductive amination side products were observed. Maurice Brookhart at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill used (Org. Lett. 2013, 15, 496) tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane as a highly active catalyst for the selective reduction of carboxylic acid 25 to aldehyde 26 with triethylsilane as a hydride source.

Abstract:
One of the more powerful routes to enantiomerically-pure carbocycles is the desymmetrization of a prochiral ring. Karl Anker Jørgensen of Aarhus University has found (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2007, 129, 441) that many cyclic β-ketoesters, including the vinylogous carbonate 1, can be homologated with 2 to the corresponding alkyne 3, in high ee. Sanzhong Luo of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, and Jin-Pei Cheng, of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Nankai University, have shown (J. Org. Chem. 2007, 72, 9350) that the catalyst 6 mediated the selective addition of 4-substituted cyclohexanones such as 4 to the nitroalkene 5, establishing three new stereogenic centers. Organocatalysts, alone or complexed with activating metals, have also been used to effect enantioselective ring construction. E. J. Corey of Harvard University has established (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2007, 129, 12686) that the proline-derived complex 10 will mediate the 2 + 2 addition of a cyclic enol ether with an acrylate to give the cyclobutane 11. Further elaboration led to the cyclohexenone 12. Armando Córdova of Stockholm University has described (Tetrahedron Lett. 2007, 48, 5835) a novel route to cyclopentanones such as 16, via tandem conjugate addition/intramolecular alkylation. Professor Jørgensen has reported (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed . 2007, 46 , 9202) the double addition of 18 to the unsaturated aldehyde 17 to give 20. Earlier last year, Yujiro Hayashi of the Tokyo University of Science had shown (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2007, 46, 4922) that the double addition of the inexpensive 21 to 5 could, depending on conditions, be directed selectively to 22, 23, or 24. As illustrated by the conversion of 8 to 13, organocatalysis can be used to effect the enantioselective construction of polycarbocyclic products. The initial ring prepared in enantiomerically-pure form by organocatalysis can also set the chirality of a polycyclic system. Professor Corey has reported (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2007, 129, 10346) that Itsuno-Corey reduction of the prochiral diketone 25 led to the ketone 27. Cyclization followed by oxidation and reduction then delivered estrone methyl ether 28.
