Abstract:
If (X′, τ′, ≤′) is an ordered compactification of the partially ordered topological space (X, τ, ≤) such that ≤′ is the smallest order that renders (X′, τ′, ≤′) a T2-ordered compactification of X, then X′ is called a Nachbin (or order-strict) compactification of (X, τ, ≤). If (X′, τ′, ≤*) is a finite-point ordered compactification of (X, τ, ≤), the Nachbin order ≤′ for (X′, τ′) is described in terms of (X, τ, ≤) and X′. When given the usual order relation between compactifications (ordered compactifications), posets of finite-point Nachbin compactifications are shown to have the same order structure as the poset of underlying topological compactifications. Though posets of arbitrary finite-point ordered compactifications are shown to be less well behaved, conditions for their good behavior are studied. These results are used to examine the lattice structure of the set of all ordered compactifications of the ordered topological space (X, τ, ≤).

Abstract:
In this paper we discuss the professional activity of Leopoldo Nachbin (1922-1993) in the period in which he worked at National Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Brazil (FNFi/UB, in Portuguese) until his retirement by Institute of Mathematics of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (IM/UFRJ, in Portuguese). We identify the influence played by some mathematicians such as G. Mammana (1893-1980), L. Schwartz (1915-2002), A. Monteiro (1907-1980), A. Weil (1906-1998), J. Dieudonné (1906-1992), M. Stone (1903-1989), and A. A. Albert (1905-1972) in the professional training of L. Nachbin. We also address the serious difficulties he encountered in the Mathematics Department of FNFi when he was entered in the competition, opened in 1950, for the post of full Professor (Professor Catedrático) of Mathematics and Superior Analysis of FNFi. We emphasize in the paper, that the period from 1947 to the 1960s marks the most creative and productive phase in terms of scientific research in the academic life of L. Nachbin.

AbstractProbabilistic quasi-metric spaces are introduced and used to define ordered probabilistic metric spaces. The latter spaces arise naturally in the study of probability and statistics; they closely resemble the uniform ordered spaces of L. Nachbin. A procedure is described for constructing ordered probabilistic metric spaces from quasi-simple spaces, and a completions theory is developed simultaneously for probabilistic quasi-metric spaces and ordered probabilistic metric spaces.

These authors considered functions with range contained in the scalar field or a locally convex topological vector space. Abstract:
A theory for the reflection-transmission problem of linear water waves in shallow channels with large-amplitude, rapidly varying topographies is given in Nachbin & Papanicolaou (1992b). However, it is very difficult to extract quantitative information from the theory in the large-amplitude regime. In this work, theoretical parameters are evaluated numerically, through the use of a numerical Schwarz–Christoffel transformation and of a Monte Carlo simulation. This enables the theory to be applied to its full extent. As a result we calculate the localization length for any given type of random bottom topography. Additionally, the numerical conformal mapping provides further insight into depth effects arising from potential theory. Statistical results, for numerically generated reflected waves, are in very good agreement with the theory for both piecewise-linear and piecewise-constant topographies of large amplitude.

Let X be a completely regular Hausdorff space. A Nachbin family of weights is a set V of upper-semicontinuous positive functions on X such that if u, υ ∈ V then there exists w ∈ V and t > 0 so that u, υ ≤ tw. For any Hausdorff topological vector space E, the weighted space CV0(X, E) is the space of all E-valued continuous functions f on X such that υf vanishes at infinity for all υ ∈ V. CV0(X, E) is equipped with the weighted topologywv = wv(X, E) which has as a base of neighbourhoods of zero the family of all sets of the formwhere υ ∈ Vand W is a neighbourhood of zero in E. If E is the scalar field, then the space CV0(X, E) is denoted by CV0(X). The reader is referred to [4, 6, 8] for information on weighted spaces.

Abstract:
Summary. The article continues the formalization of the lattice theory (as structures with two binary operations, not in terms of ordering relations). In the Mizar Mathematical Library, there are some attempts to formalize prime ideals and filters; one series of articles written as decoding [9] proven some results; we tried however to follow [21], [12], and [13]. All three were devoted to the Stone representation theorem [18] for Boolean or Heyting lattices. The main aim of the present article was to bridge this gap between general distributive lattices and Boolean algebras, having in mind that the more general approach will eventually replace the common proof of aforementioned articles.1 Because in Boolean algebras the notions of ultrafilters, prime filters and maximal filters coincide, we decided to construct some concrete examples of ultrafilters in nontrivial Boolean lattice. We proved also the Prime Ideal Theorem not as BPI (Boolean Prime Ideal), but in the more general setting. In the final section we present Nachbin theorems [15],[1] expressed both in terms of maximal and prime filters and as the unordered spectra of a lattice [11], [10]. This shows that if the notion of maximal and prime filters coincide in the lattice, it is Boolean.

Abstract:
The geographic reach and international integration of modern mathematics expanded dramatically in the wake of the Second World War. I examine the political and logistical achievement of intercontinental mathematics in this period by following the travels of José Luis Massera of Uruguay, Leopoldo Nachbin of Brazil, and Laurent Schwartz of France. The interlocking efforts of mathematicians and bureaucrats in universities, governments, philanthropies, and new postwar formations like the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization to build mathematical institutions in Latin America operated with partial information, competing prerogatives, and costly exchanges of materials and personnel, each of which reflected the shifting economic and political constraints of the global Cold War. Drawing primarily on fellowship files and institutional archives, I situate these undertakings in the mechanics and ideals of twentieth-century scientific colonialism, development, and modernization. I explain how the seemingly nontechnical bases for such exchanges related to the specific mathematics being taught and researched by accounting for the particular success of Schwartz’s theory of distributions in Latin America, which owed both to circumstantial coincidences and to a mixture of several of the theory’s superficial, technical, and conceptual features. My analysis stresses the complex, ambivalent, but nonetheless consequential personal and institutional negotiations underwriting midcentury intercontinental mathematics while pointing to the importance of such phenomena for explaining the form and effects of the period’s broader array of global scientific exchanges.

Abstract:
Topological spaces can be induced by various algebraic ordering relations such as, linear, partial and the inclusion-ordering of open sets forming chains and chain complexes. In general, the classifications of covering spaces are made by using fundamental groups and lifting. However, the Riesz ordered n-spaces and Urysohn interpretations of real-valued continuous functions as ordered chains provide new perspectives. This paper proposes the formulation of covering spaces of n-space charts of a foliated n-manifold containing linearly ordered chains, where the chains do not form topologically separated components within a covering section. The chained subspaces within covering spaces are subjected to algebraic split–join operations under a bijective function within chain-subspaces to form simply directed chains and twisted chains. The resulting sets of chains form simply directed chain-paths and oriented chain-paths under the homotopy path-products involving the bijective function. It is shown that the resulting embedding of any chain in a leaf of foliated n-manifold is homogeneous and unique. The finite measures of topological subspaces containing homotopies of chain-paths in covering spaces generate multiplicative and cyclic group varieties of different orders depending upon the types of measures. As a distinction, the proposed homotopies of chain-paths in covering spaces and the homogeneous chain embedding in a foliated n-manifold do not consider the formation of circular nerves and the Nachbin topological preordering, thereby avoiding symmetry/asymmetry conditions.

Preserving to some extent the traditional features of jajmani system, danseuses are mostly involved in the local entertainment sphere. In spite of the profound changes in the attitude to dance and music in India in general, nachnis' social status is still very low. A nachni is always involved in a dynamic relationship with her rasik – a man who fulfills functions of her teacher, manager, patron, lover, and often her children's father. There is a tendency towards forming stable family-like connections between a nachni and a rasik today. Although there is certain activity to unite all nachnis and promote their rights, this initiative is still unsuccessful due to strong professional rivalry and a lack of community feeling. The content of nachnis' dance repertoire demonstrates a blend of various styles, traditions, arranged in local ways and fitted for the popular taste of the audience.

Abstract:
Na_chni na_ch, a dance form of West Bengal, is going through a difficult time in its 500-year history. The woman dancer, who is known as a nachni, performs, often at night, along with her male partner, or rasik. Her life is intricately tied with that of her rasik, which includes her status as a woman performer at public events and the observance of proper rituals upon her death. Caught in a web of exploitation, the nachni essentially has no ‘kin’. Following the work by Inden and Nicholas on Bengali kinship and its categories and meanings within Bengali culture, this article looks at the amorphous pattern of kinship for the marginalized, with a special focus on the daily lives of nachnis. It explores the networks on the margins of kinship in which women performers of this crisis-ridden folk-art form survive.

Abstract:
Two of the most important topologies on the space ℋ(E) of all holomorphic functions f:E → ℂ on a complex locally convex space E are the compact-open topology τ0 and the Nachbin-ported topology τε. We recall that a seminorm p on ℋ(E) is said to be τω-continuous if there is a compact K such that for every open set V with K contained in V there is a constant c > 0 satisfyingClearly, the following natural question arises: when do the topologies τ0 and τω coincide? In the setting of Fréchet spaces equality of τ0 and τω forces E to be a Montel space; Mujica [21] proved τ0 = τω for Fréchet-Schwartz spaces and Ansemil-Ponte [1] showed that for Fréchet-Montel spaces this happens if and only if the space of all continuous n-homogeneous polynomials with the compact-open topology, (Pn(E), τ0), is barrelled. By duality, it turns out that the question τ0 = τω is intimately related to ‘Grothendieck's problème des topologies’ which asks whether or not for two Fréchet spaces E1 and E2 each bounded set B of the (completed) projective tensor product is contained in the closed absolutely convex hull of the set B1 ⊗ B2, where Bk is a bounded subset of Ek for k = 1, 2. If this is the case, then the pair (E1, E2) is said to have property (BB). Observe that every compact set B in can always be lifted by compact subsets Bk of Ek (see e.g. [20], 15·6·3). Hence, for Fréchet-Montel spaces E1 and E2, property (BB) of (El,E2) means that is Fréchet-Montel and vice versa. Taskinen[24] found the first counterexample to Grothendieck's problem. In [25] he constructed a Fréchet-Montel space E0 for which (E0,E0) does not have property (BB), and Ansemil-Taskinen [2] showed that τ0 ≠ τω on ℋ(E0).

Abstract:
NaChBac, the first bacterial voltage-gated Na+(Nav) channel to be characterized, has been the prokaryotic prototype for studying the structure–function relationship of Navchannels. Discovered nearly two decades ago, the structure of NaChBac has not been determined. Here we present the single particle electron cryomicroscopy (cryo-EM) analysis of NaChBac in both detergent micelles and nanodiscs. Under both conditions, the conformation of NaChBac is nearly identical to that of the potentially inactivated NavAb. Determining the structure of NaChBac in nanodiscs enabled us to examine gating modifier toxins (GMTs) of Navchannels in lipid bilayers. To study GMTs in mammalian Navchannels, we generated a chimera in which the extracellular fragment of the S3 and S4 segments in the second voltage-sensing domain from Nav1.7 replaced the corresponding sequence in NaChBac. Cryo-EM structures of the nanodisc-embedded chimera alone and in complex with HuwenToxin IV (HWTX-IV) were determined to 3.5 and 3.2 Å resolutions, respectively. Compared to the structure of HWTX-IV–bound human Nav1.7, which was obtained at an overall resolution of 3.2 Å, the local resolution of the toxin has been improved from ∼6 to ∼4 Å. This resolution enabled visualization of toxin docking. NaChBac can thus serve as a convenient surrogate for structural studies of the interactions between GMTs and Navchannels in a membrane environment.

Abstract:
Recent structural breakthroughs with the voltage-gated sodium channel from Arcobacter butzleri suggest that such bacterial channels may provide a structural platform to advance the understanding of eukaryotic sodium channel gating and pharmacology. We therefore set out to determine whether compounds known to interact with eukaryotic NaVs could also inhibit the bacterial channel from Bacillus halodurans and NaChBac and whether they did so through similar mechanisms as in their eukaryotic homologues. The data show that the archetypal local anesthetic (LA) lidocaine inhibits resting NaChBac channels with a dissociation constant (Kd) of 260 µM, and channels displayed a left-shifted steady-state inactivation gating relationship in the presence of the drug. Extracellular application of QX-314 to expressed NaChBac channels had no effect on sodium current, whereas internal exposure via injection of a bolus of the quaternary derivative rapidly reduced sodium conductance, consistent with a hydrophilic cytoplasmic access pathway to an internal binding site. However, the neutral derivative benzocaine applied externally inhibited NaChBac channels, suggesting that hydrophobic pathways can also provide drug access to inhibit channels. Alternatively, ranolazine, a putative preopen state blocker of eukaryotic NaVs, displayed a Kd of 60 µM and left-shifted the NaChBac activation-voltage relationship. In each case, block enhanced entry into the inactivated state of the channel, an effect that is well described by a simple kinetic scheme. The data suggest that although significant differences exist, LA block of eukaryotic NaVs also occurs in bacterial sodium channels and that NaChBac shares pharmacological homology to the resting state of vertebrate NaV homologues.

Abstract:
Voltage-gated sodium (NaV) channels are important targets of general anesthetics, including the intravenous anesthetic propofol. Electrophysiology studies on the prokaryotic NaV channel NaChBac have demonstrated that propofol promotes channel activation and accelerates activation-coupled inactivation, but the molecular mechanisms of these effects are unclear. Here, guided by computational docking and molecular dynamics simulations, we predict several propofol-binding sites in NaChBac. We then strategically place small fluorinated probes at these putative binding sites and experimentally quantify the interaction strengths with a fluorinated propofol analogue, 4-fluoropropofol. In vitro and in vivo measurements show that 4-fluoropropofol and propofol have similar effects on NaChBac function and nearly identical anesthetizing effects on tadpole mobility. Using quantitative analysis by 19F-NMR saturation transfer difference spectroscopy, we reveal strong intermolecular cross-relaxation rate constants between 4-fluoropropofol and four different regions of NaChBac, including the activation gate and selectivity filter in the pore, the voltage sensing domain, and the S4–S5 linker. Unlike volatile anesthetics, 4-fluoropropofol does not bind to the extracellular interface of the pore domain. Collectively, our results show that propofol inhibits NaChBac at multiple sites, likely with distinct modes of action. This study provides a molecular basis for understanding the net inhibitory action of propofol on NaV channels.

Abstract:
The bacterial sodium channel, NaChBac, from Bacillus halodurans provides an excellent model to study structure–function relationships of voltage-gated ion channels. It can be expressed in mammalian cells for functional studies as well as in bacterial cultures as starting material for protein purification for fine biochemical and biophysical studies. Macroscopic functional properties of NaChBac have been described previously (Ren, D., B. Navarro, H. Xu, L. Yue, Q. Shi, and D.E. Clapham. 2001. Science. 294:2372–2375). In this study, we report gating current properties of NaChBac expressed in COS-1 cells. Upon depolarization of the membrane, gating currents appeared as upward inflections preceding the ionic currents. Gating currents were detectable at −90 mV while holding at −150 mV. Charge–voltage (Q–V) curves showed sigmoidal dependence on voltage with gating charge saturating at −10 mV. Charge movement was shifted by −22 mV relative to the conductance–voltage curve, indicating the presence of more than one closed state. Consistent with this was the Cole-Moore shift of 533 μs observed for a change in preconditioning voltage from −160 to −80 mV. The total gating charge was estimated to be 16 elementary charges per channel. Charge immobilization caused by prolonged depolarization was also observed; Q–V curves were shifted by approximately −60 mV to hyperpolarized potentials when cells were held at 0 mV. The kinetic properties of NaChBac were simulated by simultaneous fit of sodium currents at various voltages to a sequential kinetic model. Gating current kinetics predicted from ionic current experiments resembled the experimental data, indicating that gating currents are coupled to activation of NaChBac and confirming the assertion that this channel undergoes several transitions between closed states before channel opening. The results indicate that NaChBac has several closed states with voltage-dependent transitions between them realized by translocation of gating charge that causes activation of the channel.
