Abstract:
The myth of the "mythical method": A philological excavationThis paper seeks to illuminate the meaning and purpose of T. S. Eliot’s “mythical method”, both in its original context (Eliot’s 1923 review of Joyce’s Ulysses) and in Greek critical practice, from the mid-20th century to the present. Beginning with a review of the “mythical method’s” strong impact and widespread use as a critical term in contemporary Greece, it proceeds to present this term’s main interpretations, following its initial formulation by George Seferis: as a general organizing principle or tone of voice (by E. Keeley), as a “myth-historical objective correlative” (by N. Vayenas) and as an allegorical device (by various recent critics), and to discuss their respective shortcomings. Turning to Eliot’s text, the paper shows that the “mythical method” was never meant to be used as a critical term, while Eliot’s definition of it fails to correspond to his prime textual examples. The term’s original formulation was mainly intended to protect The Waste Land, in the context of local literary politics, and so it was effectively repudiated by its author shortly after its introduction. Although the term has been practically abandoned in international critical practice, its proliferation in Greek criticism is remarkable. The paper concludes that, despite the confusion caused by their conceptual failures and wild improvisations, Greek designations of the “mythical method” can be enlightening, as illustrations of the contradictory canonizing strategies operating in the field of Greek criticism during the second half of the 20th century.

Abstract:
The aim of the research is to consider the interpretive strategies with respect to modern prose in the context of critical anthropology, which, on the one hand, unveils mentality of modern person, and on the other hand, influences its formation. This article identifies the theoretical foundations of interpretive strategies in anthropological criticism. The theoretical framework of the research is grounded on the ideas advanced by T. Boellstorff, A. Brandel, O. Halchuk, O. Haleta, V. Iser, M. P. Markowski, O. Polishchuk, N. Rapport, E. Wiles, B. Williams and other scholars. Research methods include anthropology, hermeneutics, and theoretical analysis of their basic notions. The academic novelty is in new emphasis on considering interpretive strategies of modern prose in terms of anthropological criticism. The interpretive strategies are viewed as an aspect that emphasizes the specificity of modern person’s way of thinking its direction. Modern person’s imaginative way of thinking is gradually balanced in life by abstract and conceptual framings. The study of interpretive strategies in terms of critical anthropology helps to solve two tasks: to find out how the non-academic community regards the image of oneself as a person of today, and to highlight the mechanisms and specificity of figurative thinking that manifests itself through involvement into art either as author or as recipient. It affects personal disposition as well as self-identification. Reader’s text interpretation procedure includes the processes of text creation as well as the reader’s inscription in the text itself. Besides, the process of text interpretation throughout the reading determines the production of long-term reader’s self-reflection. Nowadays literary anthropology and criticism makes it possible to consider author, recipient, and critic as cultural actants of the literary field. It also makes it possible to trace the way the image of modern person is revealed in literary text, and what are the mechanisms and strategies that create this image of the reader. Thus, the aesthetic parameters of the reception of the literary work are inscribed in the reader that influence the scope of interpretation and, accordingly, the personal growth of the recipient as it is revealed in the text. Conclusion. Interpretive strategies are recognized as a variety of textual devices along with narrative and receptive ones. Modern prose, positioned as belonging to post-non-classical literature, in contrast to classical and non-classical ones, are able to implement not one, but several different strategies focused on different types of perception. Interpretive strategies inscribed in modern texts reflect the specifics of Homo digitalis as well as virtual environment. The study of the “virtuality” of modern prose is effective in applying the methods of literary anthropology. Its interests are gradually shifting from a supporting function in the study of person by cultural and social anthropology to the analysis of literary text relying on the achievements of anthropological criticism for verifying and revealing the specifics of literary creativity and the activity of actants in the diverse literary writings.

Abstract:
The review is devoted to the 2019 Vita Nova edition of K. Vaginov’s frst novel Goat Song [Kozlinaya pesn] (1928). The publishers revised the conventional textual-critical concept of T. Nikolskaya and V. Erl and proposed one of their own. Although well-defned and engaging, it ofen comes across as questionable. Despite several criticisms, the reviewer holds an overall positive view of the book’s design (E. Posetselskaya’s illustrations) and contents. The accompanying articles — one by N. Nikolaev about the prototypes of Vaginov’s characters (importantly, about L. Pumpyansky) and another by I. Khadikov and A. Dmitrenko about the novel’s depiction of Petergof — hold unquestionable scholarly value and deserve special attention. The book is sadly missing a biographical article with a description of the writer’s life and work, otherwise a permanent feature of every publication in the publisher’s Manuscripts [Rukopisi] series. The commentary included in the book provides a satisfactory, if disputable, overview of the research published by literary scholars of Vaginov’s oeuvre in the last twenty-fve years.

Abstract:
Background The rollout of COVID-19 vaccines has brought vaccine hesitancy to the forefront in managing this pandemic. COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy is fundamentally different from that of other vaccines due to the new technologies being used, rapid development, and widespread global distribution. Attitudes on vaccines are largely driven by online information, particularly information on social media. The first step toward influencing attitudes about immunization is understanding the current patterns of communication that characterize the immunization debate on social media platforms. Objective We aimed to evaluate societal attitudes, communication trends, and barriers to COVID-19 vaccine uptake through social media content analysis to inform communication strategies promoting vaccine acceptance. Methods Social network analysis (SNA) and unsupervised machine learning were used to characterize COVID-19 vaccine content on Twitter globally. Tweets published in English and French were collected through the Twitter application programming interface between November 19 and 26, 2020, just following the announcement of initial COVID-19 vaccine trials. SNA was used to identify social media clusters expressing mistrustful opinions on COVID-19 vaccination. Based on the SNA results, an unsupervised machine learning approach to natural language processing using a sentence-level algorithm transfer function to detect semantic textual similarity was performed in order to identify the main themes of vaccine hesitancy. Results The tweets (n=636,516) identified that the main themes driving the vaccine hesitancy conversation were concerns of safety, efficacy, and freedom, and mistrust in institutions (either the government or multinational corporations). A main theme was the safety and efficacy of mRNA technology and side effects. The conversation around efficacy was that vaccines were unlikely to completely rid the population of COVID-19, polymerase chain reaction testing is flawed, and there is no indication of long-term T-cell immunity for COVID-19. Nearly one-third (45,628/146,191, 31.2%) of the conversations on COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy clusters expressed concerns for freedom or mistrust of institutions (either the government or multinational corporations) and nearly a quarter (34,756/146,191, 23.8%) expressed criticism toward the government’s handling of the pandemic. Conclusions Social media content analysis combined with social network analysis provides insights into the themes of the vaccination conversation on Twitter. The themes of safety, efficacy, and trust in institutions will need to be considered, as targeted outreach programs and intervention strategies are deployed on Twitter to improve the uptake of COVID-19 vaccination.

The textual criticism of the New Testament (2): An exercise in theory and practice This concluding article on New Testament textual criticism focuses on the practical application of a workable method for the evaluation of textual variants in the manuscripts of the New Testament. Six variation units displaying a wide variety of textual problems are discussed, viz the ending of Mark’s gospel, the theological/christological problem in John 1:18, the possible conjectural emendation in Acts 16:12, the ortographical variation in Romans 5:1, the doxology at the end of Romans, and the so-called “command to silence” in 1 Corinthians 14:34-35. The next result in each case does not necessarily produce rousing new insights, but it underlines the need for a balanced approach which weighs all the evidence without prejudice before making a decision on the value of a textual variant.

Abstract:
The work of many emerging young rabbinics scholars today, particularly that which is focused on the Mishnah, is animated by a desire to synthesize two distinct approaches to rabbinic texts. One is the traditional philological-historical approach, which traces its roots back to the European Wissenschaft des Judentums tradition of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In its current form, traditional Talmud criticism is perhaps most associated in Israel with the work of J. N. Epstein, the founder of the Hebrew University Talmud Department and the “father of exact scientific Talmudic inquiry.” While most of Epstein's students proceeded to shape the study of rabbinic literature in the Israeli academy, Saul Lieberman, perhaps his most distinguished disciple, moved to America, where his presence dominated the study of rabbinic literature at the Jewish Theological Seminary in the postwar decades. Traditional Talmud criticism is characterized by a scrupulous attention to manuscripts and textual variants, a systematic use of the findings of Semitic and comparative linguistics, and the use of form and source criticism to determine the history and development of larger textual units.

This article discusses philosophical translation criticism based on the Derridian texts. Firstly, I review some of the critiques made by J. Derrida on the French translation of Plato's Phaedrus. Some of the problems raised there allow me to demonstrate the polysemous textual fabric of philosophy and define the notion of deconstructive criticism. The second part presents some of the characteristics of philosophical translation from terminology's point of view and analyzes the Spanish and French retranslations of the Hegelian concept Aufhebung. Finally, in the third part I attempt to show that Derridian texts require a sort of criticism borrowing both from A. Berman's and H. Meschonnic's translation criticism projects. Abstract:
David Hume (1711-1776) has long been considered a severe denunciator of 'social contract theory', and this interpretation has implicitly premised a perspective that lays heavy weight on the importance of social contract in the history of political thought. This work presents Hume's critique of the Lockean version of the social contract, and identifies the issues responsible for such criticism. In Book 3 of Hume's Treatise on Human Nature (henceforth T), Hume displays his systematic criticism of social contract theory. Hume did not consider social contract theory as an important trend in the history of political thought. One of his points was that 'social contract theory' was quite new, strange and 'heterodoxical' in politics. This work offers an appraisal of Hume’s stance on the Lockean variant of “Social Contract Theory” and proposes a more judicious textual reading of his contributions in this regard.

The goal of the article is to revise the engendered notions of the Soviet textual criticism concerning the impact of censorship on Nekrasov’s works as exclusively repressive and leading to the distortion of the text. A number of texts («The Unfortunate», «The Railroad») show that the censor’s input encouraged the poet to further improve the text. The presence of arguments in favor of censorship interference should not, however, lead to deviations from the principle of the last lifetime edition and to the «reconstruction» of the text from other sources.

Abstract:
This thesis is an unconventional history of the interpretation of Day One, Genesis 1.1-5, in Hebrew and Greek texts up to c. 200 CE. Using the concept of ‘intertextuality’ as developed by Kristeva, Derrida, and others, the method for this historical exploration looks at the dynamic interconnectedness of texts. The results reach beyond deliberate exegetical and eisegetical interpretations of Day One to include intertextual, and therefore not necessarily deliberate, connections between texts. The purpose of the study is to gain a glimpse into the textual possibilities available to the ancient reader / interpreter. Central to the method employed is the identification of the intertexts of Day One. This is achieved, at least in part, by identifying and tracing flags that may draw the reader from one text to another. In this study these flags are called ‘intertextual markers’ and may be individual words, word-pairs, or small phrases that occur relatively infrequently within the corpus of texts being examined. The thesis first explores the intertextuality of Genesis 1.1-5 in the confines of the Hebrew Bible and the Septuagint. The second half of the thesis identifies and explores the intertexts of Day One in other Hebrew texts (e.g. the Dead Sea Scrolls, Sirach) and other Greek texts (e.g. Philo, the New Testament) up to c. 200 CE. The thesis concludes with a summation of some of the more prominent and surprising threads in this intertextual ‘tapestry’ of Day One. These summary threads include observations within the texts in a given language and a comparative look at the role of language in the intertextual history of Day One.

Abstract:
The media has an important role to play in providing information to form the perceptions of media users on HIV/Aids. Furthermore, the media has an agenda setting function through which it determines what news consumers think about, and how they think about these topics they are presented with. Extensive media coverage has been given to the subject of HIV/Aids since the start of the pandemic. The nature of the coverage has, however, been widely criticised, mainly by interest groups actively involved in the fight against the disease. Few formal guidelines exist to guide journalists in this field. Moreover, the existing guidelines that originated mainly from the gaps interest groups identified in the coverage on HIV/Aids, are fairly fragmented. Many newspapers follow the general guidelines set by the media industry for ethical news reporting. These guidelines, such as the ethical code of the Press Ombudsman, are a result of self regulation, which is intrinsic to the social responsibility model that is seen as ideal for South Africa. There are several existing codes offering guidance regarding professional standards and general conduct. Only one - that of the now inactive South African Union of Journalists - includes criteria on HIV/Aids reporting. Through formulating guidelines, interest groups have an agenda setting function and a subsequent potential influence on the media and the public agenda. This paper endeavours to analyse and systematically summarise criteria set by the interest groups for ethically acceptable and accountable HIV/Aids reporting against the background of the agenda setting theory and the social responsibility model. In addition, HIV/Aids reporting in three Sunday papers (the Sunday Times, Sunday Sun and Rapport) is verified against these interest group criteria to ascertain how it measures up, and to determine whether a separate interest group code of ethics is desirable. It was found that the Sunday Times views HIV/Aids as a news priority, while the topic does not feature very high on the agenda of the other two papers. The analysis of news items created the impression that journalists have a basic knowledge of HIV/Aids. However, there is little evidence of deeper insight into the potential impact the media could have on the public's perception of the epidemic. Existing ethics codes compare well to interest group guidelines where general professional standards and ethical aspects are concerned. The interest group guidelines, however, focus on specific problems associated with the epidemic, such as stigma and a tendency to focus on the negative. It is within this applied context that such criteria could be useful.

Abstract:
Abstract In my study, I am using methods of text criticism to analyse how Chrisfrid Ganander (1741–1790) marked the word-final k in the Kalevala-metre old poems that he recorded in his dictionary and in Mythologia Fennica. These poems were published in the XV part of the Ancient Poems of the Finnish People. My study is linked to folkloristics, but belongs principally to the field of research into Old Literary Finnish. In my philological analysis I am comparing Ganander’s poetic texts with other old texts in the Kalevala-metre and analysing their relations and the origins and history of the texts. I am interpreting the phonetic and morphologic structure of the poems with the help of the context and on the cultural historical basis of the texts. The results of my study would seem to indicate that Ganander marked the final k clearly more frequently than his other contemporaries. In earlier studies Ganander’s marking of the final k has been criticized for inconsistency. In fact, in my data, the occurrences of the word-final k are not morphologically regular in the sense that the final k would always systematically occur in, e.g., imperatives. However, a regular pattern can be found in the way in which the cases with a final k fit the general ideas about the occurrence of the final k. Nevertheless, my data also include a few extraordinary occurrences of the final k and even some cases that may be deemed erroneous. The irregularities in the marking can be explained by the fact that Ganander had several different text versions of the same poem. The way in which Ganander marked the final k seems to have been affected mostly by the source texts and locality of the verses; their morphology, phonetic environment, and verse type. Yet, Ganander seems to have even used the final k deliberately in some cases. This is evident from a few cases of the final k in the texts Ganander produced himself and certain results of my philological analysis. The essential is that Ganander marked his final k’s in places where they could be expected from a historical perspective. Thus, it seems that he had an idea of where the final k’s should be. Ganander seems to have followed the marking of the final k’s in his sources very faithfully. However, it is especially interesting that he also marked the final k’s in verses based on source texts where the final k’s had not been marked. Ganander may have had old notes about these poems in his possession that the others did not have access to or that were not preserved in their collections. These verses might even represent poetry collected by Ganander himself. It seems that Ganander managed to catch and record rare and old linguistic material that has not, in fact, been preserved anywhere else. As a philologist, Ganander was versatile, critical, and enlightened, but he also made up some of his analyses purely on the basis of poetic verses. His dictionary includes even erroneous and incoherent interpretations. Ganander’s dictionary quotations that are based on folklore texts may also seem imaginative in the sense that he was trying to explain the world of folk poetry in them. Ganander’s philological interpretations – including their errors – have left their mark on later literary works. Thus, the poetic language as it was recorded by Ganander has affected the description of the Finnish language in dictionaries and grammars. The study and analysis of the language in the folk poems may therefore shed light on the history of the scientific description of the Finnish language
Ganander näyttää silti operoineen jonkin verran tietoisestikin loppu-k:lla. Gananderin filologinen tulkinta on jättänyt jälkensä myöhempiin teoksiin – kaikkine virheineenkin. Näin runokieli Gananderin kirjaamana on päässyt vaikuttamaan suomen kielen kuvaukseen sanakirjoissa ja kieliopeissa. Kansanrunojen kielen tutkimus ja analyysi voivat siis osaltaan valaista suomen kielen tieteellisen kuvauksen historiaa

Davies-Browne, Bankole P. "The significance of parallels between the 'Testament of Solomon' and Jewish literature of late antiquity (between the closing centuries BCE and the Talmudic era) and the New Testament." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/2685.

Full text
Abstract:
The TSol is a Christian composition of late antiquity which narrates the story about how King Solomon built the Temple of God with the aid of demons he subjugated. Comparative analysis between the TSol and Jewish literature of late antiquity (between the closing centuries BCE and the Talmudic era), and the New Testament is primarily to establish any literary dependence and explore the nature of contact between the TSol and these materials; and also to isolate Jewish elements in the TSol. The Jewish materials discussed are the Hebrew Bible, the LXX, Tobit, Wisdom of Solomon, Pseudo-Philo, certain Qumran documents (11 PsApa and the Copper scroll), Josephus' Jewish Antiquities, Ecclesiastes, Proverbs, Song of Songs, rabbinic literature, and certain Aramaic incantation texts. My research has shown that parallels do exist between the TSol, the Jewish literature discussed and the New Testament. The parallels between the TSol and the aforementioned literature are twofold: verbal and conceptual. Verbal parallels occur in the form of technical terminology; quotations, allusions and echoes. The second type of parallels appears in the form of motifs, themes, structural elements and ideas. These parallels seem to dominate in my analysis. There is no need to explain the parallels between the TSol and the literature discussed in terms of literary dependence. I have attempted to demonstrate that these parallels in most of the literature are indicative of indirect influence through shared use of the biblical tradition: motifs, stories and themes regarding King Solomon; a common fund of oral tradition(s) regarding Solomon's magical power over demonic world; shared literary language, milieu, and cultural conventions. Moreover, the author of the TSol seems to have recycled Jewish materials pertaining to Solomon and related motifs in his work. Apart from the New Testament, the best case for a direct influence of a Jewish work on the TSol is Tobit.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2005.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study examines the presentation of race relations in two Sesotho novels written after 1994. The purpose of the study is to establish whether or not post-apartheid Sesotho novels present race relations as they were presented during the apartheid era. The novels of focus are, N.S. Zulu's Nonyana ya Tshepo (The bird of hope) (1997) and T.W.D. Mohapi's Lehfaba fa fephako (The pain of hunger) (1999). The manner in which the authors who wrote during the two distinct eras presented the issue of race and presented race relations will be the focal point. At the end of this study it should be clear whether or not authors after 1994, that is, after the apartheid era continue to present race relations in an idealistic manner. During the apartheid era authors such Lesoro (1968) and Mophethe (1966) were very cautious when presenting race relations in their novels. The common factor in these novels is the portrayal of the white Afrikaner characters by the authors. White characters were portrayed as very merciful, good Samaritans and their relationship with their black counterparts were often harmonious and crisis free. Attributes of race such as racial discrimination, racial hatred, racial conflict and racial intolerance were seldom spoken about in those novels. This is reminiscent of the notorious apartheid laws, which prohibit freedom of press. White characters in some novels published during the apartheid era were not characters derived from real life. In N.S. Zulu's novel, Nonyana ya Tshepo we examine the portrayal of the characters from the two distinct races, black Africans and white Afrikaners. The author portrays the two groups of characters to be what Scholes (1981 :11) calls characters representative of a social class, race and a profession. Black characters are portrayed as the exploited, which are always inferior, submissive and subjected to racial discrimination by their white counterparts. White Afrikaners are portrayed as the exploiters, who are superior, oppressors and the ones who further the policy of apartheid. This state of affairs prompted the black Africans to develop hatred towards the Whites. Instead of idolizing their masters, Blacks do the opposite. Our main character, Tshepo who is said to be fathered by the white Afrikaner, is marginalized by his fellow Blacks and declared an outcast. In T.W.D. Mohapi's novel, Lehlaba la lephako, the main character, Seabata who lusts for power and wealth is seen struggling for both at the expense of his fellow black Africans. Seabata is used by his white boss, Sepanapodi, to maintain the legacy of apartheid. The narrator portrays Seabata in such a way that he could carry out his boss' mission. Seabata is power hungry and always likes to please his boss to attain that, even if that means creating enmity with his own black people. Seabata's socio-economic status makes him vulnerable to manipulation by Sepanapodi. Seabata was advised by his father that he should always strive to please his master in order to gain glory and wealth. He followed the advice slavishly and that left him devastated. He found himself at loggerheads with his colleagues, with the pastor, Nkgelwane, with a local teacher, Mohanelwa and with his wife, Mmabatho. Conflict between Seabata and the community is caused by the pain of hunger.
In N.S. In T.W.D.

The absence of the words ekklesía and koinonía in the sets of texts of the Fourth Gospel surprises the listener-reader. The author of the Gospel does not explicitly address the subject of ecclesiology, without concern for the constitution or organization of the community. Their concern seems to lie in the intimate relationship of communion/unity with believers, members of the Church, with Christ and with one another. The present research aims to address this question of the relationship between ekklesía and koinonía in an ecclesiological reading of the texts of the Fourth Gospel, in order to understand the intimate relationship between church and communion from the text 15:1-8 divided into two parts. In the first moment he will present an exegetical study of text 15:1-8 and then a biblical-theological study, deepening the nature of the Church in the image of the “vine and branches”, which highlights the union of those who “believe” with Jesus, A community that abides in him and lives the promise that he abides in them. This emphasis on the personal relationship of one who believes with Jesus does not suppress an authentically community reflection of the Gospel for our day and our ekklesíal reality

The similarity of John writings and the gnostics is still a lasting subject nowadays. All discoveries that attempt to clear things up get people’s attention. The discoveries of Nag Hammadi writings, whose some texts are gnostics, points at an Alexandrian II century AD Gnosticism that suffered from various influences, mostly Johannine. The exploration of such environment allow us not only to notice John richness, but also his diffusion in religious environments. Some of the writings of Nag Hammadi, as Trimorfaic Protenor, John Apocryphal and Gospel of Truth, have vocabularies and thematic affinities with the Fourth Gospel, especially with the Prologue. Through the similarity with the quoted texts, the question arises whether the texts of Alexandrian II century AD were used from John prologue to his composition. The hypothesis is that somehow the Gnostics had contact with the Johannine prologue and used their concepts to base their teachings. In order to answer this question, this work has bibliographic character, using the literature concerning the prologue of the Fourth Gospel and the analysis of the quoted texts and the prologue, from the tradition and the contemporary exegesis

The gospel according to Luke, in the extended section of Jesus' ascent to Jerusalem (Lk 9:51–19:28), presents the conditions cited by Jesus for one to become his disciple. The purpose of this dissertation is to examine each of these conditions by focusing specifically on the text of Luke 14:25-33. To do so, an exegetical analysis of the text will be developed, which will serve as a basis for a subsequent theological analysis and consequent hermeneutic actualization. The theme is relevant, since discipleship has been and remains the essence of the Christian life in the sense of a godly life in community. The methodology applied in this work will be guided by a bibliographical research, which will be based on several authors, who have developed studies and research on the subject. The conditions put forward by Jesus, presented in the Lucan text, express the radicality and the necessity of a conscious decision on the position that will be adopted before them. From these factors will depend a genuine position as a disciple of Jesus Christ, who obeys and follows

This study is an analysis of the account of Luke 7, 11-17 better known as the resurrection of the son of the widow of Naim. In a first moment the work deals with general questions of the Gospel according to Luke, presenting the structural analyzes of the narrative. So, the pericope of Naim assumes a literary function, serving to complete the answer to the messengers sent by John the Baptist (Lk 7, 18-23) about the identity of Jesus. To prove this, Luke employs the Greek verb σπλαγχνίζομαι, to be moved with compassion, to a widowed woman who was in a situation of vulnerability. We studied the rule for the use of this verb in the pericope as well as its semantic root and its two other occurrences in the Lucan Gospel. For the analysis and interpretation of Lk 7,11-17, analytical elements of contemporary biblical exegetical methodology were used. The research valorized the diachronic studies by making the interface with the synchronic studies and intertextual analyzes, aided by texts of the Magisterium of Pope Francis. The results achieved were a better understanding of the Lucan account, because in using the verb σπλαγχνίζομαι the author does so in a conscious and coherent way towards those who are in a situation of vulnerability and uses their own literary criteria and their particular narrative style

Abstract:
The article discusses several textual features of the second Church Slavonic version of 1–4 Kingdoms, which has come down to us in two manuscripts, written in Serbian Resavian orthography. The earliest copy dates from 1418 (National Research Library of Odessa, no. 6 [1/106]), while the second is from 1523–1543 (Moscow, Russian State Library, f. 87 N° 1 [1684]). The paper presents this tradition to scholars as new material for the study of the Antiochene or Lucianic recension of 1–4 Kingdoms, a text-type found in five Greek manuscripts. The analysis shows that it represents a new witness, not only to the Antiochene recension of 1–4 Kingdoms as a whole, but also to its proto-Lucianic textual stratum.

Abstract:
Abstract This is a major contribution to Aeschylean textual criticism. Mr Dawe gives a full collation of sixteen MSS (one more is cited occasionally); seven of these were not used by Wilamowitz, six being suggested by Turyn as better representatives of <P than some Wilamowitz did use, and one chosen at random (I, Iviron 209). I is collated for Aeschylus for the first time, and previous collations of other MSS are superseded. For this alone we should be deeply indebted to him; but he has also shown by this evidence that the stemma established by Wilamowitz and elaborated by Turyn must be discarded. The apparatus cannot be accounted for by descent from a medieval archetype, or by vertical descent at all. We have to do with an open recension; at least two, perhaps more, uncial copies (of the triad) survived, and horizontal transmission took place at every stage.

Abstract:
Criticism of the text of Gogol’s story “The Carriage” is complicated by the absence of a blank autograph and discrepancies between the two printed editions — in Pushkin’s “Sovremennik” (1836) and in the “Works of N. Gogol”, edited by N.Ya. Prokopovich (1842). The article substantiates the importance of such an additional factor as the parodic nature of the story in solving еditional problems. For a long time, “The Carriage” was perceived only as a joke and household satire. In the 1990s, Gogol studies began to discuss the parody specifics of the genre of this work. The specific characteristics of the story are the comic stylization of popular literary signs of the middle of nowhere, the mores of landowners, the habits and entertainment of provincial and quartered regimental officers, plot and compositional stereotypes, speech patterns, etc. At the same time, the parody level is subordinated to an independent literary plot, a holistic comic image. The author of the article is convinced that Gogol’s intention of parodying narrative cliches and the parodic nature of the narrator’s speech figure should be taken into account when solving textual and traditional problems, including attribution of editorial edits in two printed sources — to Gogol himself, Pushkin and Prokopovich.

Abstract:
This article deals with the analysis of the meaning and the origin of the proper name Dracula, belonging to the well-known vampire created by Bram Stoker, from an etymological point of view. Indeed, Dracula is not a fictitious proper name, but it is the epithet of Vlad III (“the Impaler”), ruler of Wallachia in 15th century. The reconstruction of the etymology of this name, which can be analysed as drac + -ul + -a, has triggered a great discussion among scholars, who gave two different meanings to this sobriquet: ‘the devil’ or ‘the son of the dragon’. The name Dracula appears to be a derivative from the sobriquet Dracul, which belonged to Vlad III’s father, Vlad II, a member of the Order of the Dragon. Therefore, discussed in a new light in this paper is the hypothesis that the sobriquets Dracul and Dracula are Latinisms from Lat. draco ‘dragon, (mythological) huge-sized serpent’ with the addition of the Romanian postpositive article -ul ‘the’ and, i n t he case of Dracula, t he addition of t he ending -a with the meaning ‘the son of’. An important role in this etymological inquiry is also played by extra-linguistic factors, such as textual and material sources and historical background.

Abstract:
The Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT), Ireland, is a Higher Education (HE) provider of Initial Teacher Education (ITE).Graduates on its BSc (Hons) in Education (Design, Graphics and Construction) degree programme are qualified to teach technical subjects at second level. A defining element of delivery is the promotion of creativity and innovation in the classroom, by means of active, student-centred and design-led teaching and learning (T&L) strategies. This paper outlines a GMIT qualitative student-perspective pilot study, involving a total of 42 GMIT student teacher participants (n=42). The study aims to analyse the effectiveness of two selected platforms in the ITE programme: 1) presentation contributions by 14 student teachers at the GMIT ‘Creativity and Innovation in Teaching’ Conference (2016) (n=14), and 2) a textual analysis of student online forum critical reflection submissions (2016-2017) (n=28). The research confirms the effectiveness of both strategies in promoting a practice of innovation and creativity in the classroom, including evidence of the innovative educational technology classroom tools and increased student-centred, active learning and design-led strategies in T&L. Abstract:
Driven by the demand for innovation, design is constantly evolving and is increasingly focused on integrating new technologies into design processes. Technological innovations have proven to be of fundamental importance, both in speeding up and improving production processes and managing and enriching the ideational process. We are now surrounded by software in which the participation of artificial intelligence is constant, but although it has become pervasive, we often do not even notice its presence. In the field of product design, several software exploiting artificial intelligence have been diffused to provide us with virtual products at the two-dimensional level. These software are capable of transforming the ideational stages of a project, as they generate original idea proposals in a matter of minutes. One of the most popular software is Midjourney, which is based on the key text-to-image concept, and can create images from prompts, and descriptive keywords provided by the designer. There are also interesting examples in this regard. Think of the work done by Filippo Nassetti, a British architect and designer, who came up with a series of sunglasses and eyeglasses by going through Midjourney, to obtain zoomorphic-inspired products that recall the textures of biological and mineral microstructures. The surreal collection of biomorphically shaped glasses is an example of the exploration of the creative potential of Midjourney software.Another interesting project is the one tackled by the Oio company for the Spawns spoon collection, in collaboration with Giosanpietro Jewelry. According to Simone Rebaudengo, director and co-founder together with Matteo Loglio of the Oio company, the products in the Spawns collection derive from an ongoing dialogue between different skills that has led to the collaboration between man and algorithm, resulting in an expansion of the handmade, merging the ancient world of craftsmanship with that of advanced technology, defining what they call 'craft intelligence. The paper aims to explore the relationships, potentials and limitations of integrating artificial intelligence into the design process through a design experience that tests the innovative potential of text-to-image software in product ideation and reflects on the redefinition of the designer's role in this rapidly and continuous changing scenario. The case study presented therefore experiments with a design process in which the ideation phase is supported by AI, particularly by text-to-image software, which allows textual descriptions to be translated into visual representations, generating highly detailed images and offering new creative possibilities. The work addressed outlines perspectives and critical issues, which deserve further investigation. On the one hand, one potential that is being outlined is the possibility of visualizing even complex ideas by entrusting the imaginative component to the software, having a multiplicity of alternatives and expanding the ideational range with novel solutions from which to make more informed design choices. Text-to-image software also simulates effective virtual prototyping, allowing a concept to be prefigured and visualized in a three-dimensional context before committing to physical production. On the other hand, text-to-image software has some significant limitations, for example in the poor correspondence of generated images with design intentions and the designer's need to acquire technical skills to effectively use text-to-image software, going on to delineate the possibility of a figure such as that of the prompt designer. Therefore, the presented project aims to contribute to the contemporary debate on the integration of AI into design processes with the collaboration of text-to-image software as another avenue for innovation in product design. The scenario sketched out defines an area in which the role of the designer and human creativities proves irreplaceable, leaving one to understand how more and more a process of understanding and collaboration with AI technologies is needed, and how the skills required of future designers are going to vary and expand.Nozaki, N., Konno, E., Sato, M., Sakairi, M., Shibuya, T., Kanazawa, Y., & Georgescu, S., 2017, Application of artificial intelligence technology in product design.
