Review of the book: Stolyarov Yu. Rubakin revisited / Yury N. Stolyarov: Russian School Library Association ; Librarianship Department of the International Informatization Academy ; Russian State Library ; Research Center of Book Culture Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences ; National Library of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). – Moscow : RUSLA, 2019. – 416 p., ill.The reviewer emphasizes the importance of the reviewed book, as Nicholas Rubakin’s work of researcher and educator, has not been studied comprehensively yet. The publication coincides with Rubakin’s 160-th anniversary. The reviewer characterizes the book structure and the contents of its five chapters: “The Life”, “The Foreign Native”, “The Focus of N. A. Rubakin’s Creative Interests”, “Bibliopsychological Portraits”, and “The Author of Integral Philosophy”.Yu. N. Stolyarov characterizes Nicholas Rubakin as a science communicator, expert of self-education and (kids) reading guidance and, most of all, as a founder of bibliopsychological theory. The reviewer examines the key works by Rubakin for each of the above-mentioned areas, e.g. “The secret of library work success”, “What the bibliological psychology is”, The Psychology of readers and books”, “Importance of the books”, “On the methodology of the book business”, “The book market in Soviet Russia and its psychology”. The reviewer makes a focus on Rubakin’s masterwork –“Among books” and on Stolyarov’s footnotes that expand the book text and reader knowledge, and points to the book design.

Abstract:
The scope and limitations of the Nicholas-type cyclization for the synthesis of 10-membered benzothiophene-fused heterocyclic enediynes with different functionalities were investigated. Although the Nicholas cyclization through oxygen could be carried out in the presence of an ester group, the final oxaenediyne was unstable under storage. Among the N-type Nicholas reactions, cyclization via an arenesulfonamide functional group followed by mild Co-deprotection was found to be the most promising, yielding 10-membered azaendiynes in high overall yields. By contrast, the Nicholas cyclization through the acylated nitrogen atom did not give the desired 10-membered cycle. It resulted in the formation of a pyrroline ring, whereas cyclization via an alkylated amino group resulted in a poor yield of the target 10-membered enediyne. The acylated 4-aminobenzenesulfonamide nucleophilic group was found to be the most convenient for the synthesis of functionalized 10-membered enediynes bearing a clickable function, such as a terminal triple bond. All the synthesized cyclic enediynes exhibited moderate activity against lung carcinoma NCI-H460 cells and had a minimal effect on lung epithelial-like WI-26 VA4 cells and are therefore promising compounds in the search for novel antitumor agents that can be converted into conjugates with tumor-targeting ligands.

Nicholas Pippenger has recently given a problem that, under two simple restrictions, can be solved in linear time by an impure Lisp program, but requires Ω(n log n) steps to be solved by any eager pure Lisp program. By showing how to solve the problem in linear time with a lazy functional program, we demonstrate that – for some problems at least – lazy evaluators are strictly more powerful than eager ones.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to little-known facts from the life of the family of Emperor Nicholas II. The main historical source was “The case of the Nizhny Novgorod Provincial Prison Inspection. About the products of the workshops of the First Nizhny Novgorod prison in 1913”, preserved in the fund 386 of the Central Archive of the Nizhny Novgorod region. It testifies that the prisoners of the First Nizhny Novgorod Provincial Prison prepared a unique gift for the son of Emperor Nicholas II — Tsarevich and Grand Duke Alexei Nikolaevich. The gift was timed to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty. The article also used other types of historical sources: “Diaries of Emperor Nicholas II”, memoirs of P. Gilyar, a teacher of French, mentor of Tsarevich Alexei Nikolaevich, materials of the pre—revolutionary periodical press — the magazine “Prison Bulletin”, as well as unique photographic documents of M. P. Dmitriev, who recorded the ceremonial reception of the imperial family in Nizhny Novgorod on May 17, 1913. The historiographical basis was the works of modern historians: N. F. Filatov, A. V. Morokhin, R. V. Golubin, S. Yu. Varentsov, L. Abrosimova. The author came to the conclusion that at the beginning of the XX century in Nizhny Novgorod penitentiary institutions, convict labor was fairly well organized, prison workshops developed. In the First Nizhny Novgorod provincial prison, an exclusive gift was prepared for Tsarevich Alexei Nikolaevich — a printing machine with the name “American”. It was made of expensive materials, taking into account the age and interests of the heir to the imperial throne.

Abstract:
This article reviews the problem of perception and assessment of the process of school building in USSR by the Russian pedagogical émigré at the turn of 1920’s – 1930’s. Having set the goal of creating the Russian foreign school, pedagogues and leaders of the social-pedagogical movement took a close eye on what was happening to the school homeward, assessed it with critical objectivity, highlighting the positive changes and pointing at dangerous tendencies. These issues are the focus of attention in the articles of Sergius Hessen, N. F. Novozhilov, A. L. Bem and N. A. Hans in the émigré pedagogical periodicals. Using the principles of the traditional historical-pedagogical research, approaches of content analysis and case study, the author determine the methodology applied by Nicholas Hans for analyzing the Soviet educational policy and school system. The authors reveal the scholar’s position, according to which the characteristic to the entire history of national school antagonism between radical and autocratic traditions finds its continuation in the Soviet school,  that in turn, allows extrapolating the conclusions based on the development stages of prerevolutionary school towards new situation. N. A. Hans uses similar approach in preparation of works about the Soviet school policy, addressed to the English audience. For the first time the authors introduce into the scientific discourse a number of Russian and English language publications of N. A. Hans, a notable participant of the social-pedagogical process of Russian émigré community, but yet unfamiliar to Russian audience. Nicholas Hans was one of the few Russian émigré, who was able to integrate into the scientific educational space of the Great Britain and became a prominent pedagogue-comparativist.

Abstract:
The object of this research is the process of reception of the Soviet school of 1920’s – early 1930’s in the English periodicals and the role of a prominent English pedagogue-comparativist, the former Russian emigrant Nicholas Hans (N. A. Gantz). Leaning on the traditions of pre-revolutionary Russian pedagogy, practice of the Russian pedagogical emigration and accomplishment of the English pedagogical thought, using the comparative-historical approach, N. Hans depicts the established in USSR system of education in the context of confrontation between the two educational traditions: democratic and autocratic. Despite the fact that the name of N. A. Gantz has been returned to the Russian pedagogy back in 1990’s, the English period of his scientific and teaching activity yet remains insufficiently studied. The authors introduce into the academic discourse a number of his unknown articles dedicated to the history of Russian school and the state Soviet education of the 1920’s – early 1930’s, which were previously published in English periodicals. The article traces N. Hans’ participation in “Pedagogical Annual” and presentation of the Russian theme on its pages.

The Nicholas-type macrocyclization through NH-tosyl functional group has been found to be an efficient technique for the synthesis of a 10-membered azaenediyne system annulated with a benzothiophene. To compare the activity of azaenediyne synthesized with similar oxa- and carbocyclic enediynes the Bergman cyclization activation energies and the ability of enediynes to cleave DNA (pBR322 plasmid) were investigated. The order of reactivity predicted by DFT calculations (N-enediyne < C-enediyne < O-enediyne) was confirmed by DSC analysis data. Surprisingly azaenediyne was found to be more active in the DNA cleavage assay than the C-analogue.

Abstract:
Hand-held dynamometry has proven reliable in assessing adult strength. The primary purpose of this study was to determine its reliability in children. Secondary purposes included investigating strength differences between males and females and between dominant (D) and nondominant (ND) sides. Subjects were 8-, 9-, and 10-year-old boys (n=63) and girls (n=54). The Nicholas Manual Muscle Tester (NMMT) was used to measure maximum isometric force of D and ND elbow flexors, elbow extensors, and shoulder abductors. Retest measurements were taken 4 to 7 days later. Results indicated that (a) correlation coefficients ranging from .72 to .90 were statistically significant; (b) except for males’ ND elbow extensor strength, a series of paired t tests revealed no significant differences between test and retest strength values; (c) a series of paired t tests revealed no significant strength differences between D and ND sides other than for males’ elbow extensor strength for the test phase; and (d) a series of unpaired t tests revealed statistically significant differences between males and females on a majority of the muscle groups. The NMMT appears to be a quick and reliable testing instrument for determining maximal isometric force in children.

Abstract:
On the materials of the historico-biographical treaties and the generalizing works and special essays in history of the Russian social and political thought the historiographical appraisals and treatments of the ideological character of M. P. Pogodin given by the Pre-October and Soviet historians are examined. This problematico-historiographical review is realized in the context of phenomenon of the so-called «theory of the Official Nationality» in the period of the Nicholas I reign. A. N. Pypin, liberal and westernist historian of literature and social thought, was the real maker of this debatable historiographical ideological construction. He considered M. P. Pogodin the eminent representative of the Official Nationality and the odious conservator-conformist. Other Pre-October historians and publicists (S. Ashevskiy ets.) focused their research attention to Pogodin’s "Political letters" (1853?1856) in which his opposition to Nicholas I regime’s policy and certain progressive features of his position were especially strongly manifested. G. V. Plekhanov’s work "Pogodin and the class struggle" (1911) determined the typical for the following Marxist and Soviet historiography fixed interest to the class roots of his conservatism and sociological identification that as the "bourgeois". The late Soviet authors (V. K. Tereshchenko) which were adherents of the class treatment also and the contemporary Russian historians of the Soviet school (V. Ya. Grosul, R. G. Eymontova) emphasized the heterogeneity and evolutionary character of the Pogodin’s position, the increasing presence of the critical and progressive elements in his conservative world outlook on the whole.

Using mainly historical-comparative and historical-genetic methods, the question of the interaction of secular power in the person of the governor of the Vyatka province N. A. Troinitsky and the spiritual power in the person of Bishop of the Vyatka and Sloboda provinces Apollos (Belyaev) in terms of resolving the issue of opening a brotherhood in the Vyatka province to work with Old Believers, is raised in the article. In this work, on the basis of archival materials, the process of preparation for the opening of the Vyatka brotherhood of St. Nicholas the Miracle Worker in the city of Vyatka in 1882 is considered. Particular attention is paid to the consideration of the position of the Bishop of Vyatka and Sloboda Apollos regarding the creation of the Vyatka brotherhood. In the course of the study, the authors come to the conclusion that Bishop Apollos was a supporter of the initiative of Archpriest Stephen Kashmensky in terms of creating a brotherhood, but at the same time sought to limit the material base of the brotherhood and create a brotherhood without funding from the consistory. As a result, through the Chief Prosecutor of the Holy Synod K. P. Pobedonostsev, the misunderstanding between the secular and spiritual authorities of the Vyatka province was eliminated, and in the fall of 1882, with the blessing of the Bishop of Vyatka and Sloboda Apollos, the Vyatka brotherhood of St. Nicholas the Miracle Worker was established.

AbstractUsing the middle convolution functorMCχintroduced by N. Katz, we prove the existence of rigid local systems whose monodromy is dense in the simple algebraic groupG2. We derive the existence of motives for motivated cycles which have a motivic Galois group of typeG2. Granting Grothendieck’s standard conjectures, the existence of motives with motivic Galois group of typeG2can be deduced, giving a partial answer to a question of Serre.

Abstract:
AbstractThe standard medieval view of New Testament Apocrypha was that they were Christian writings (related to matters treated in the canonical books of the Bible), which had to be treated with caution and often dismissed as heretical. A list of the Apocrypha figured in the [Pseudo-]Gelasian Decree. In the Renaissance, for authors such as Lèfevre d'Etaples, Nicholas Gerbel and many others, the term assumed a multiplicity of meanings, both positive and negative. This article shows that although no attempts were made in the early 16th century to bring N. T. Apocrypha together into a corpus, the editors' ambivalent and complex attitude to texts such as the Laodiceans or Paul's Correspondence with Seneca led to their definitive marginalisation and encouraged their subsequent publication (by Fabricius and others) as corpora of dubious writings.

Abstract:
The 350th anniversary of the publication of Nicholas Stenon's treatise «On the solid, naturally contained in the solid» is marked in 2019. This work proves possibility of interpretation of spatial relations of layers of rocks from the point of view of the time sequence of the phenomena. N. Stenon linked space and time through the appearance in the same place of different bodies, united by certain spatial and geometric relationships, having created a methodological basis for geohistorical analysis. Having substantiated the continuous-discontinuous structure of the sedimentation process, he concluded that a geohistorical process has a similar structure. N. Stenon made a conclusion about the incompleteness of the geological chronicle and the universality of the stratons, and formulated the principle of actualism. In the treatise, the origin of fossils is defined, the factors of fossilization of remains of organisms are analyzed, regularities of formation of locations are considered, new methodical receptions of deciphering of landscapes of the geological past are developed. Linking the spatial relationships between the layers with the sequence of their formation in time, N. Stenon introduced in geology a new relational genetic concept of time and developed a method for determining the temporal properties and relationships of geological objects.

Abstract:
Based on the materials of expert and attribution studies carried out by the author over the years, this article examines the historical and archival documents, evidence and facts used in the course of the examination and attribution of works of easel, theatrical and decorative art of Nicholas Roerich (1874–1947). Also, the author examines the role which documents from the funds of the departments of manuscripts of the State Russian Museum, the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian State Archives of Literature and Art, the Central State Archive of Film and Photographic Documents of St Petersburg, and other institutions play in the examination process, which is important for clarifying and studying the artistic heritage of the master. The purpose of the article is to consider individual examples of the examination and attribution of N. K. Roerich’s works with the help of various kinds of historical, cultural, and everyday documents, facts, and evidence reflected in unpublished art history texts, epistolary and memoir sources, in inscriptions on the reverse of paintings and on the margins of typographic prints of exhibition catalogues and works of art by Roerich, i.e. everything that contains important information for an expert included in the concept of “historical and archival aspects”. The article provides examples of art history, culturological and technical and technological methods used in the examination and attribution of works of art, and their result, which is reflected in the “expert conclusions”, attributions, verified and refined description of works and the history of their existence, which is important for understanding the artist’s work, further analysis of his work and, as a result, the emergence of new scholarly and educational publications.

Abstract:
The composition of “The Steppe” is considered within the linguo-semiotic approach, first, as a metaphor for the architecture of the Cathedral of St Basil; second, as a metaphor for the historical process, with the idea of Moscow as the Third Rome and the New Israel emphasized. The connection between the chapters and the deities and saints to whom the churches of the cathedral are dedicated is shown. The Church of St Nicholas of N. can be correlated with the southern Side-church of St Nicholas Velikoretsky. Chapter 2 mentions Alexander I of Russia. In Chapter 3 allusions to the story of Abrahamʼs hospitality are found. Panteley, Emelyan, and Vasya parody the three holy hierarchs; the gentleman and lady from the church parody St Cyprian and Justina. St Gregory of Armenia is referred to by mentioning Armenian settlements. Chapter 7 describes the entry of the waggons into the city. Chapter 8 contains allusions to the life and а posthumous miracle of St Barlaam of Khutyn. Analogies are drawn with the Book of Amos, after whom Alexander Svirsky was named. The journey takes place in the opposite direction to the movement of the sun, with which the Church of the Intercession of Our Lady is identified, and in terms of its duration corresponds to Godʼs creation. The historical process is limited by the events described in the Book of Genesis and the Revelation of St John the Divine. Classical antiquity is represented by Deniska, the Old Testament period by Moisei Moiseichʼs family, the period of religious syncretism by the drivers, the New Testament period by Konstantin Zvonyk. Going round the cathedral is an allusion to the story of the fall of Jericho and Jesusʼs words about the destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem.

Abstract:
Some four years ago, one of the participants in this Discussion (Prof. Nicholas Kotov) predicted that: “within five years we shall see multiple examples of electronic, sensor, optical and other devices utilizing self-assembled superstructures” (N. A. Kotov, J. Mater. Chem., 2011, 21, 16673–16674). Although this prediction came partially to fruition, we have witnessed an unprecedented interest in the properties of materials at the nanoscale. The point highlighted by Kotov, however, was the importance of self-assembly of structures from well characterised building blocks to yield hierarchical structures, hopefully with predictable properties, a concept that is an everyday pursuit of synthetic chemists. This Discussion has brought together researchers from a wide range of disciplines, i.e., colloid science, modelling, nanoparticle synthesis and organisation, magnetic and optical materials, and new imaging methods, within the excellent traditional Faraday Discussion format, to discuss advances in areas relevant to the main theme of the meeting.
