The publication coincides with Rubakin’s 160-th anniversary. The reviewer characterizes the book structure and the contents of its five chapters: “The Life”, “The Foreign Native”, “The Focus of N. A. Rubakin’s Creative Interests”, “Bibliopsychological Portraits”, and “The Author of Integral Philosophy”.Yu. N. Stolyarov characterizes Nicholas Rubakin as a science communicator, expert of self-education and (kids) reading guidance and, most of all, as a founder of bibliopsychological theory. The reviewer examines the key works by Rubakin for each of the above-mentioned areas, e.g. “The secret of library work success”, “What the bibliological psychology is”, The Psychology of readers and books”, “Importance of the books”, “On the methodology of the book business”, “The book market in Soviet Russia and its psychology”. The reviewer makes a focus on Rubakin’s masterwork –“Among books” and on Stolyarov’s footnotes that expand the book text and reader knowledge, and points to the book design.

Burnett, Sarah. "The cult of St Nicholas in medieval Italy." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2009. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/3632/.

Full text
Abstract:
St Nicholas was one of the most popular saints in medieval Italy. His cult attracted the attention of popes, kings and emperors, and his shrine at Bari became an important international pilgrimage destination. This thesis asks how the cult of St Nicholas came to be so widespread and popular in Italy, and why the saint attracted the attention of diverse groups and individuals. This thesis is structured around four chapters. The first demonstrates that through a process of Latinisation the cult of St Nicholas became integrated within Italian literary traditions and within a new spiritual era. Chapter Two reveals that this Latinisation also occurred within the saint’s iconography. Chapters Three and Four are case studies of the cult in Puglia and Venice, locations which claimed possession of the saint’s relics. These case studies show that the general developments that the cult of St Nicholas underwent in Italy, identified in Chapters One and Two, did not apply universally. Instead, the presence of the saint’s relics resulted in a different profile of the saint in Bari and Venice. Through the process of Latinisation, the cult of St Nicholas became updated and remained relevant for its new Italian audience; Chapters Three and Four show alternative ways that the cult of St Nicholas gained widespread popularity. This thesis presents for the first time an iconographical study of St Nicholas in Italian art, which develops existing research of the saint’s Byzantine iconography. Chapter Four presents a profile of the cult of St Nicholas in Venice in the Middle Ages, which is a significant oversight in the literature. The thesis uses a variety of visual and textual sources, in particular fresco and altarpiece representations, archival documents from Venice and Rome (including the Apostolic Visitations), and under-exploited contemporary and antiquarian Venetian sources.

Carelse, David Peter. "Heiligheid, geregtigheid, heiliging? : 'n kritiese ondersoek na die verbande tussen liturgie, geregtigheid en menseregte in die denke van Nicholas Wolterstorff." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/71994.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2011.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study is ‘n research proposal for a possible D.Th degree. The research objective is to explore critically the thought and teachings of Nicholas Wolterstorff, a leading Christian philosopher, that there is an inseparable and fundamental link between the celebration of the Sunday liturgy, the concept of justice we believe in, and human rights. I start by discussing how Wolterstorff writes, lives and defends this thought as a conviction of faith and as a philosophical paradigm. The contents of it can be summarised as follows: the holiness of the believer as an imitation of the holiness of God, is not a mere spiritual trait, it has also social implications; holiness presupposes justice; human rights is based upon the Biblical truths of the equal status of all human beings, mankind as the image of God, and the universal love command. The kingdom of God is established through law and justice. This was already confessed by the early church fathers. Love and justice cannot be separated. The worship of God and man’s responsibility towards one another is grounded in the covenant. Protestantism is a world-formative religion. Worship in the presence of injustices, is not worship; it is false religion. The limitation imposed by the liberal state that its citizens cannot use religious reasons in public for the furthering of justice is then discussed. Religion should be allowed and the State should be impartial in its handling of all religions. Therefore Christians need an adequate cognitive framework for moral judgment. This must also be included in the curriculum of students at Tertiary Institutions. To equip the students for their role in life, the staff must teach and model justice, love, forgiveness, prayer and human rights. Students and the youth in church must also be brought face to face with those who suffer because of injustices, lack of love and economic marginalisation. I then go on to motivate the reasons for undertaking this research. The motivation includes a description of the immorality, injustices and human rights violations in and outside South Africa. Then I discuss the opinions of various theologians across the world of whether worship and faith can contribute to the conversion, healing and change of people and institutions. The last chapter is a tentative illustration of the value of this research for the Church, the academy and the broader society. This value is estimated within the interdependence of transformative constitutionalism (juridical) and discipleship as transformation (theological). I conclude with a few closing remarks.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie is ‘n navorsingsvoorstel vir ‘n voorgenome D.Th graad. Protestantisme is ‘n wêreld-transformerende godsdiens.

Adams, Samuel V. "The reality of God and historical method : an examination of theological historiography in critical dialogue with N.T. Wright." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/6545.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis argues that any historiography that would contribute to theological knowledge must take into consideration, at a methodological level, the reality of God. This theological claim, in turn, has significant implications for historical knowledge and thus, historiography. The thesis moves ahead in five chapters. The first is an overview and description of N. T. Wright's historical and theological method as they both are grounded in his critical realist epistemology. The second chapter argues for a particular theological epistemology that goes beyond Wright's and corrects it, drawing primarily on the work of T. F. Torrance and Søren Kierkegaard. In the third and fourth chapters an ‘apocalyptic' theological approach is defined and articulated according to a progression from soteriology to Christology to creation. The final chapter builds upon this constructive theological work by articulating an ‘apocalyptic' theology of history which is then used to articulate some key considerations for a theological approach to historiography in critical dialogue with Wright's historical and theological method.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine I. M. Pei and his partner Harry Cobb's downtown Dallas architecture within the context of their overall stylistic development. This paper explores the structure of five buildings within the framework of the city, and addresses their possible influence on the city's future architectural direction. The thesis is divided into six chapters. Chapter I introduces and states the problem as it discusses the fabric of Dallas architecture. Chapter II outlines a brief biography of I. M. Pei, looking to those who have influenced him, while discussing the key public buildings of his stylistic development. Chapter III is devoted to Pei's first structure in the city, the Dallas Municipal Administration Center. Chapter IV explores the concepts of his planned Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center. Chapter V outlines a brief biography and focuses on the work of Harry N. Cobb: One Dallas Centre, ARCO Tower, and the Allied Bank Tower. Chapter VI summarizes the contributions of Pei and Cobb by placing them within the context of twentieth century architecture, and pointing out their specific achievements with their additions to the fabric of Dallas architecture.

This master thesis examines the correlation between the narrative of the kingdom of heaven theory and its missiological adaptations. Based on examples from the works of N.T. Wright, the purpose of this paper is to ascertain what kind of relevance narratives of the kingdom of heaven theory might have for theology and how they could be applied in missiology. This analysis revolves around the main question: What importance should be awarded to the kingdom of heaven narratives in missiology? Consequently, the first chapter deals with the basic framework of this paper. Chapter two then focuses on examining the basic contents of Wright’s work and how he is able to create a meta-narrative based on the kingdom of heaven approach. The third chapter is devoted to the substantive investigation and elaboration of a metanarrative of the kingdom of God defined by Wright. The fourth and last chapter of this paper is presenting the main results of this thesis before leading up to a draft of a narrative-missiological approach. In addition, various aspects of Wright’s approach are critically discussed. The results then are embedded in a German context which leads to a prospect of future research opportunities.

Hill, Joan. "Ancient and modern treatment of Alexander the Great." Diss., 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/2487.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines the different interpretations of the secondary sources for Alexander the Great by three modern historians, Nicholas Hammond, Peter Green and Mary Renault. The Introduction looks briefly at the lost primary Alexander-histories, the extant works of Diodorus Siculus, Quintus Curtius, Plutarch and Arrian and includes an abbreviated curriculum vltae of each modern author. Chapter X concerns modern interpretations of the controversial circumstances surrounding the accession of Alexander and the assassination of Philip. Chapter II covers the elimination of possible rivals, Attalus, Alexander Lyncestes and Amyntas son of Perdiccas, two major conspiracies - the Philotas Affair and the death of Parmenio, the conspiracy of the Royal Pages and death of Callisthenes - and the killing of Cleitus the Black. Chapter III deals with modern explanations of the death of Alexander. The Conclusion highlights significant theories and trends presented by the modern historians, which influence their interpretations of the ancient sources.

Ryoichi Kuwano of Kyushu University showed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2008, 130, 808) that diastereomerically and enantiomerically pure pyrollidines such as 2 could be prepared by hydrogenation of the corresponding pyrrole. Victor S. Martín of Universidad de la Laguna found (Organic Lett. 2008, 10, 2349) that the stereochemical outcome of the pyrrolidine-forming Nicholas cyclization could be directed by the protecting group on the N. Jianbo Wang of Peking University established (J. Org. Chem. 2008, 73, 1971) a convenient route to diazo esters such as 6. N-H insertion led to the pyrrolidine, which Zhen-Jiang Xu of the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry and Chi-Ming Che of the University of Hong Kong showed (Organic Lett. 2008, 10, 1529) could be reduced with high diastereoselectivity to the hydroxy ester 7. Alternatively, Professor Wang found that photochemical Wolff rearrangement of 6 delivered the pyrrolidone 8 . Martin J. Slater and Shiping Xie of GlaxoSmithKline optimized (J. Org. Chem. 2008, 73, 3094) the hydroquinine catalyzed enantioselective 3+2 cycloaddition of 9 and 10, leading to the pyrrolidine 11 with high diastereocontrol. Shu Kobayashi of the University of Tokyo developed (Adv. Synth. Cat. 2008, 350, 647) a practical protocol for the aza Diels-Alder construction of enantiomerically-pure piperidines such as 14 . Biao Yu of the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry cyclized (Tetrahedron Lett. 2008, 49, 672) the product from the proline-catalyzed enantioselective aldol of 15 and 16, leading to the substituted piperidine 17 . Michael Shipman of the University of Warwick described (Tetrahedron Lett. 2008, 49, 250) the cyclization of the aziridine derived from 18, that proceeded to give 19 as a single diastereomer, apparently via kinetic side-chain protonation. Takeo Kawabata of Kyoto University found (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2008, 130, 4153) that intramolecular alkylation to form four, five and six-membered rings from amino esters such as 21 proceeded with remarkable enantioretention. Géraldine Masson and Jieping Zhu of CNRS, Gif-sur-Yvette, condensed (Organic Lett. 2008, 10, 1509) cinnamaldehyde 23 with cyanide and an ω-alkenyl amine to give the intramolecular aza-Diels-Alder substrate 24. Hongbin Zhai of the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry acylated (J. Org. Chem. 2008, 73, 3589) 26 with 27, leading to the ring-closing metathesis precursor 28.

En route to (–)-quinocarcin, Nobutaka Fujii and Hiroaki Ohno of Kyoto University cyclized (Chem. Eur. J. 2013, 19, 8875) 17 to 18 with high diastereoselectivity. Dipolar cycloaddition, long a workhorse of pyrrolidine synthesis, has been improved by enantioselective organocatalysis. For instance, Liu-Zhu Gong of the University of Science and Technology of China combined (Org. Lett. 2013, 15, 2676) 19, 20, and 21 to give the triester 22. Qi-Lin Zhou of Nankai University reduced (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013, 52, 6072) the tetrahydropyridine 23 to 24 in high ee. Takaaki Sato and Noritaka Chida of Keio University cyclized (Chem. Eur. J. 2013, 19, 678) the intermediate from reduction of 25 to the piperidine 26. Yasumasa Hamada of Chiba University devised (Tetrahedron Lett. 2013, 54, 1562) the rearrangement of 27 to the piperidine 28. In a synthesis of (–)-hippodamine, Shigeo Katsumura of Kwansei Gakuin University used (Org. Lett. 2013, 15, 2758) the chiral auxiliary 29 to direct the combination of 30 with 31 to give 32.

Abstract:
En route to sarcandralactone A 3, Scott A. Snyder of Scripps Florida effected (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2015, 54, 7842) Diels–Alder cycloaddition of the activated enone 1 to the Danishefsky diene. On exposure to trifluoroacetic acid, the adduct was unraveled to the ene dione 2. Michael N. Paddon-Row of the University of New South Wales and Michael S. Sherburn of the Australian National University prepared (Nature Chem. 2015, 7, 82) the allene 4 in enantiomerically-pure form. Sequential cycloaddition with 5 followed by 6 gave an adduct that was decarbonylated to 7. Further cycloaddition with nitroethylene 8 led to the pseudopterosin (−)-G-J aglycone 9. The protein–protein interaction inhibitor JBIR-22 12 contains a quaternary α-amino acid pendant to a bicyclic core. Nicholas J. Westwood of the University of St. Andrews set (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2015, 54, 4046) the absolute configuration of the core 11 by using an organocatalyst to activate the cyclization of 10. Metal catalysts can also be used to set the absolute configuration of a Diels–Alder cycloaddition. In the course of establishing the structure of the marine natural product muironolide A 15, Armen Zakarian of the University of California, Santa Barbara cyclized (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2015, 137, 5907) the enol form of 13 preferentially to the diastereomer 14. Unactivated intramolecular Diels–Alder cycloadditions have been carried out with more and more challenging substrates. A key step in the synthesis (Chem. Asian. J. 2015, 10, 427) of (−)-platencin 18 by Martin G. Banwell, also of the Australian National University, was the cyclization of 16 to 17. In another illustration of the power of the unactivated intramolecular Diels–Alder reaction, Thomas J. Maimone of the University of California, Berkeley cyclized (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2015, 54, 1223) the tetraene 19 to the tricycle 20. Allylic chlorination followed by reductive cyclization converted 20 to chatancin 21.

Abstract:
One of the most significant issue of proportional integral derivative (PID) controller is the efforts to optimize coefficient gains. Based on survey, massive tuning methods were proposed to resolve this problem but there is little pay attention to maximize minimization time response significantly. This study proposed a novel technique to maximize optimization PID gains for the DC motor controller by combining both proper tuning method with signal input signal output (SISO) optimization toolbox using optimization based tune (OBT) techniques, that could be utilized for the highest precision controller. The comparative study has been carried out by applying five different tuning methods to obtain a proper tuning controller, then to be combined with SISO optimization toolbox. The utilized tuning methods are Robust Auto tune (RAT), Ziegler–Nichols (Z-N), Skogestad Internal Model Control (SIMC), Chien Hroues Reswick (CHR), and Approximate M-Constrained Integral Gain Optimization (AMIGO). The performance of each tuning methods based OBT are analyzed and compared using MATLAB/SISO tool environment, where the efficiency has been assessed on a basis of time response characteristics (Ti) in terms of dead time (td), rise time (tr), settling time (ts), peak time (tp) and peak overshoot (Pos). The simulation results of AMIGO based proposal show a significant reduction time response characteristic to be measured in the Microsecond unit (μs). The novelty feature of the proposed is that provides superior balancing between robustness and performance. This study has been completely rewritten to account for the robotic controller development that has been taken place in the last years.

Abstract:
Usually, a dynamic system with impact conditions is an interesting problem with practical applications in the fields of dynamics, vibrations, and control. One difficulty in controlling robotics (i.e., a multi DOF two-cooperating or two-link planar) is the subject to impact between the end-effectors of manipulators is that the dynamics (i.e., equations of motion) are different when the system status changes suddenly from a non-contact state to a contact state. In this paper, a Tuned PID controller with different design scenarios is developed to regulate the states of two dynamic systems that collide. Further, in this work, three types of errors are used to compare among different cases that are; (1) the steady state error, (2) the root mean square error, and (3) the final value error. The results of the Tuned PID controller are compared to those obtained by a classical PID controller. The PID controller is tuned using the Ziegler–Nicholas approach. The simulation results of the robotic manipulators confirmed the theoretical effectiveness of the proposed controller, based on MATLAB/Simulink. Unlike the classical PID results (i.e., the impact-induced force is found to be 2.0 N), the Tuned PID controller successfully determined the impact-induced force as same as the desired force (i.e., 0.6 N). Moreover, the Tuned PID satisfied all other desired design values.

Abstract:
Abstract China has recently promised to reach carbon neutral before 2060. To achieve this ambitious goal, it is necessary to substantially increase the electricity production from clean sources, such as renewable power and nuclear power, to replace the previous share of coal power generation. Most of the nuclear reactors currently in operation in China are pressurized water reactors (PWR). The nuclear steam supply system (NSSS) in PWR is a complex nonlinear system. The steam bypass system ensures the steam generator’s cooling capacity in accident conditions and is essential for safe and efficient plant operation. Because of the broad transport delay and non-linearity in the steam bypass control system, it is difficult for the currently widely used proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control to obtain satisfactory control effects. Therefore, it is necessary and meaningful to design a suitable steam bypass control system for NSSS. The investigation of the steam bypass system is performed by MATLAB & Simulink for a large-scale PWR. The nonlinear model is developed by applying the mass and energy conservation equations of fluids and the critical flow correction. The state-space multivariable models are derived by linearizing the nonlinear model at different operation points. Open-loop simulation experiments have been carried out to study the steam bypass system’s dynamic, and the state-space model simulation results are validated by comparing with the results from the nonlinear model. The open-loop results show that the overall system has a considerable transport delay. Thus, a linear active disturbance rejection controller (LADRC) is designed for the steam bypass system. This research assumes that the model and the amount of delay are nearly unknown; however, the proposed controller still performs better than the existing Ziegler-Nichols (Z-N) tuned PID controller. The LADRC has a shorter settling time than the PID controller; the control system can satisfy the design purposes.

Abstract:
The molecular basis of platelet-fibrin interactions has been investigated by using synthetic peptides as potential inhibitors of binding fibrin protofibrils and fibrinogen to ADP-stimulated platelets, adhesion of fibrin fibers to the platelet surface, and platelet-mediated clot retraction. Synthetic peptides RGDS and HHLGGAKQAGDV, corresponding to regions of the fibrinogen α and γ chains previously identified as platelet recognition sites, inhibited the binding of radiolabelled soluble fibrin oligomers to ADP-stimulated platelets with IC50 values of 12 and 40 μM, respectively. The IC50 values obtained with fibrinogen as the ligand were 3-fold higher. Synthetic GPRP and GHRP, corresponding to the N-terminal sequences of the fibrin α and β chains, were minimally effective in blocking soluble fibrin oligomer binding to ADP-stimulated platelets. The extent of fibrin:platelet adhesion was determined with a microfluorimetric technique which measures the quantity of fluorescein-labelled fibrin attached to the surface of platelets. The signal obtained from the brightly fluorescent platelet:fibrin adducts was time- and concentration-dependent, and was fully inhibited by a monoclonal antibody directed against the glycoprotein II:IIIa complex (HP1-1D, kindly provided by Dr. W. Nichols). Inhibition of fibrin:platelet adhesion by RGDS, HHGGAKQAGDV, and GHRP all exhibited a similar, linear dependence on the peptide concentration, reaching 1/2 maximum at about 200 μM, suggesting nonspecific effects. GPRP inhibited fibrin assembly but did not appear to have specific effects on fibrin:platelet adhesion. The time course of clot retraction was followed by right angle light scattering intensity measurements. Only RGDS affected clot retraction, causing a 4-fold decrease in rate at 230 μM. These results indicate that fibrinogen and fibrin protofibrils, which are obligatory intermediates in the fibrin assembly pathway, share a set of common platelet recognition sites located at specific regions of the α and γ chains of the multinodular fibrin(ogen) molecules. The RGDS site is also involved in mediating interactions between the three dimensional fibrin network and ADP-stimulated platelets.

Abstract:
Proportional-integral-differential controllers (PID controllers) are one of the most widespread controller architectures and are used in a large number of technical systems [1]. When operating highly dynamic test benches to investigate the system behaviour of powertrain components with rotating movements, the controllers are often used as speed controllers. In order to reproduce the complex phenomena in such a powertrain as accurately as possible, the high dynamics of the test bench is required. This means that the test bench must be able to vary the speed highly dynamically and at the same time have the least possible unwanted influences on the system under investigation. This enables the system to be disconnected from the overall system to be specifically examined on the test bench with a virtual representation of the remaining system. A large part of this required system dynamics depends on the parameters of the PID controller. The adjustment of the parameters is often based on empirical knowledge and empirical methods, which have existed for several decades and consider a highly simplified system dynamics [2]. These procedures are easy to use, but are characterized by a high experimental effort and limited optimization potential. In addition, there are more and more approaches to perform the controller adjustment using metaheuristic algorithms [3, 4]. These work with detailed system models and are able to map the system behaviour in detail. Consequently, they offer a high optimization potential. Since these approaches are based on detailed knowledge about the adjustment procedure and the system to be optimized, they are not yet practicable for test bench operation with varying systems. Therefore, the authors present in this paper a method that allows to combine the easy handling of the empirical procedures with the optimization potential of metaheuristics. Thus, the user does not need to have a profound knowledge of control engineering and is guided through the adjustment process in the form of targeted support. For this purpose, the construction of system models by using a library based approach and the possibility of automatic system identification as well as a new optimization function are presented. For these only characteristic values such as overshoot, settling time or rise time have to be selected and a qualitative decision has to be made. This enables a simple and robust adjustment of the controllers.
