Abstract:
AbstractIn rock historiography, Abbey Road Studios is depicted as the rock canon's ultimate recording house; home to the Beatles, Pink Floyd and a generation of classic rock album production. In recent years, the studio has struggled to maintain itself as an operational recording house, yet effectively exploits its past to secure its future. This article considers issues of heritage, pilgrimage and tourism before elucidating brand ‘Abbey Road’ as a conflation of geographical location, zebra crossing, graffiti wall, recording house and aura. In separating the tangible aspects of Abbey Road's heritage – the zebra crossing, graffiti wall and the Beatles Abbey Road album – out from its intangibles – its ‘magic’, legacy and studio ‘vibe’ – Abbey Road's studio aura is exposed as a commodity in its own right.

Abstract:
This paper explores Anne Carson’s “Kinds of Water: An Essay on the Road to Compostela,” the author’s journal on her pilgrimage to Santiago. Taking water as a metaphor for the Camino, the text reflects the creative dimension of the pilgrimage both from an artistic and personal standpoint. Alternative discourses of the female writer and pilgrim occur in a text that is an essay and a meditation on the forms of resilience put into practice by Carson after facing a series of personal losses. The progressive construction of self-knowledge is seen as an emancipatory act that transcended Carson’s mourning period in her experience, which she took as an opportunity to embrace personal transformation. I suggest that my approach can bring useful perspectives not only to further and refine knowledge on Carson in Spain but also for the consideration of resilience as an aspect that contributes to the critical understanding of narratives of individual and social transformation.

Lurching from day-today in the months before South Africa becomes a republic, booze-befuddled Indian private investigator Rohit Biswas does not ponder how he can secure his daughter's future after he became a widower and lost his job as police detective when he killed a man who fatally stabbed his wife. Salvation appears when a rich client hires the PI to find evidence proving his son did not rape and murder a white socialite. Abstract:
AbstractVorticity is everywhere. We cannot live without it and we cannot fly without it. The vortex as a construct of fluid motion is necessary for the wing to lift. The propulsion system, be it a propeller or a jet engine, also needs a vorticity to provide the force needed to overcome the resistance of motion through air. This chapter is a road map of how we will proceed on a journey of exploration that will take us from abstract ideas to the observation of beauty and the realization of great flight performance.

Abstract:
The final chapter recounts the last few plays of Young’s career, with a focus on The Dream Girl (music by Victor Herbert). This was an adaptation of the 1906 play The Road to Yesterday by Beulah Marie Dix and Evelyn Greenleaf Sutherland. Soon before opening, the Shuberts brought in Harold Atteridge to write material for vaudeville comedian Billy B. Van, which greatly altered the script Young had spent about three years writing. As a result, the script is uneven and was panned by critics. Young only wrote one more play after this, Cock o’ the Roost, before falling ill with breast cancer. She died in 1926 and left behind an estate worth more than $95,000, or about $1.3 million in today’s money. The chapter concludes with an appraisal of Young’s legacy.

Abstract:
Originally offered as the 2011 Endowed Bonnie Cashin Memorial Lecture at UCLA Library Special Collections, this talk consists of two parts: an overview of John Fante’s life and times, and a behind-the-scenes account of the work Cooper did in researching his biography of Fante. Confiding to his audience that any biography is to some degree autobiographical, Cooper tells of his own youthful infatuation with Ask the Dust and how that feeling developed into the central project of his professional life both as a writer and a teacher. The revised version of the talk that is presented here leads up to the disclosure of a mystery surrounding the John Fante papers, a mystery that persists to this day.

Full text
Abstract:
Anatomical variations of the sinuses are common and may lead to obstruction to the ventilation and drainage of the sinuses. This may lead to osteomeatal complex disease refractory to medications. A preoperative CT of the paranasal sinuses acts as road map guide to identify vital anatomical variations and its relationship to the orbit, skull base, neurological and vascular structures, to prevent iatrogenic injuries. To control intraoperative bleeding, it is critical to identify the anterior and posterior ethmoidal artery indentations and sphenopalatine artery in the anterior and lateral nasal walls. It is essential for the surgeon to familiarize with the anatomy of the ethmoid region, lateral nasal wall, sphenoid sinus, sella and parasellar region and pterygopalatine/infratemporal fossa before embarking on these approaches. The advent of CT scans and state-of-the-art FESS instrumentation has made surgery of the paranasal sinuses less of a mystery for the surgeon. Therefore, identifying and addressing these anatomical variations during FESS is crucial in restoring ventilation and drainage.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of this presentation is to contribute to the archetypal aspects of the transference and the countertransference through an exploration of the Christian imagery, strengthening the relationship between religion and analytical psychology. C.G. Jung thought that the transference had a key role in the healing process, allowing the doctor to take over the patient’s suffering, so it can be shared, explored creatively, and integrated into consciousness. He believed that this type of relationship could also have archetypal aspects beside personal ones, triggering projections such as the saviour complex on the side of the patient and identifications with the wounded-healer on the side of the therapist. Building on Jung’s and the post-Jungians’ insightful remarks, this presentation will investigate the transference dynamics in the stories of the Gospel, drawing parallels between the analytic couple on the one hand and Christ and his community on the other. In particular, it will focus on aspects such as trust and mystery, love that heals and the endless search for wholeness, considering both episodes of healing and spiritual rebirth, like The Bleeding Woman, and of preaching and revelation, like The Road to Emmaus. KEYWORDS: gospel, transference, analytical psychology

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents an analytical model for the evaluation of the distribution of the absorbed power and how the body reacts to the road excitation. “Absorbed power” is a popular method used to evaluate ride comfort. Since Pradko and Lee introduced it in 1960’s [1,2], researchers focused on the “absorbed power” transmitted to the body as a single indicator of body tolerance and fatigue. How the body absorbs energy and how it distributes it remains a mystery. This paper attempts to shed some light on how this energy is transmitted to different parts of the body and what is at stake when the input conditions change. A six degree of freedom (dof) lumped mass model was developed to investigate the energy absorption and the work performed by the muscles (springs and dampers) during a rough ride. A better understanding of the energy flow between the body segments may give us an idea on how the seat and its suspension should be designed.
