Full textCampomanesia xanthocarpa Berg, a species that belongs to the Myrtaceae family, is popularly known as gabiroba. Several therapeutic properties are attributed to the various Campomanesia species, such as treating diarrhea, fever, cystitis and urethritis. This project aims at contributing through a chemical and pharmacological study of lyophilized hydrated alcohol extract and the vegetable drug made from leaves. The pharmacological and botanical features of the vegetable drug are indicated in order to help with the diagnosis. Main macroscopic features of the dehydrated leaves include: wavy edges, translucent blade spots, venation type, blade and leafstalk forms and scent. The main anatomical features are: dorsiventral mesophyll; large idoblasts containing prismatic crystal in the palisade parenchyma; predominance of anomocytic stomata in the hypostomatic leaves, globose segregating cavity associated to both surfaces, covered by cells organized in pairs where the commissure wall appears straight, sinuous, or in zigzag; bicollateral vascular bundle and system organized in an open arch, prismatic crystals in the phloem region. Photomicographs illustrate the study. The phytochemical screening of the vegetable drug and the lyophilized extract (EHA) indicated the presence of essential oil, flavonoids, tannins and saponins. The essential oil content in the fresh leaves was 0.11 %. Linalol (29%) and globulol (20%) were identified as the main oil components. Tannin content was 2.86% in the drug and 8.49% in the EHA extract. The saponin content was 6.27% in the drug and 16% in the EHA extract. The extract displayed a high antioxidant activity in the model of malonyl dialdehyde production measure with Q1/2 = 0,2891 µg/mL. In the copper sulfate-induced lipoperoxydation inhibition assay the EHA extract significantly reduced Lag-time and Peak-time for low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidability. The EHA extract displayed antiulceration activity in the acute induction model by hydrochloric acid in ethanol, with a 62% protection percentage. The EHA extract displayed antibacterial activity with: CMI >1,000 and <500 µg/mL relative to Staphylococcus aureus; CMI <500 and >100 µg/mL for Salmonella cholerasuis and CMI <1.000 and >500 µg/mL regarding Candida albicans. The EHA extract displayed cytotoxic activity in the artemias lethality trial, with DL50 of 0,503 mg/mL. The EHA extract displayed no toxicity in the acute toxicity trial in the 5g/kilo oral dosage per animal body weight.

Abstract : The Atlantic Forest is one of the most important domains in Brazil for having great biodiversity and being threatened by anthropic pressures. Myrtaceae is one of the families of arboreal species that are richest in this domain. The Atlantic Forest is divided biogeographically in two regions: one north and one south. The Parque Nacional de São Joaquim is part of the Atlantic Forest Domain and is constituted by rain and cloud broadleaved and mixed needle and broadleaved forest and highland grasslands. The objective of this work was to describe the flora of Myrtaceae in the upper highlands of Parque Nacional de São Joaquim and to compare the floristic composition of Myrtaceae of different areas in the southern region of the Atlantic Forest and the geoclimatic variables influencing it. Descriptions, illustration and identification keys of the Myrtaceae species found in the upper highlands of Parque Nacional de São Joaquim were presented. Jaccard dissimilarity analysis and multivariate ordination analysis (RDA) were performed with data of presence and absence of 254 species of Myrtaceae in 42 areas compiled from the literature available. A Mantel Test was performed to evaluate spatial autocorrelation and a Moran Test to evaluate the spatial autocorrelation and species richness. Seven genera and 16 species were registered for Parque Nacional de São Joaquim. Myrtaceae composition varies greatly from one area to another in the south of the Atlantic Forest. There is a high percentage of species restricted geographically and a low percentage of common species. There is a difference in specific composition of Myrtaceae related to altitude. The separation between the tropical and subtropical region affects the presence and absence of Myrtaceae species. The main predictors of the specific variation in Myrtaceae in the south of the Atlantic Forest were: altitude, precipitation of the wettest month, temperature seasonality and the distance from the Atlantic Ocean.

Full textThe Brazilian species of Myrtaceae family comprises several arborescent and shrubby plants that can be used to produce fruit for fresh consumption or industrialization. Due to these species importance, commercial products and usefulness in environmental restoration as well as the fact that they are propagated mainly through sexual reproduction the demand for sufficient quantity and quality of seeds is increasing. The objective of this study is to use different substrates and temperatures in the germination test of Accasellowiana (O. Berg) Burret. (goiaba-serrana), Campomanesia xanthocarpa O. Berg (guabiroba), Eugenia involucrata DC. (cereja-do-mato) and Eugenia pyriformis Camb. (uvaia) seeds; characterize the germination process and describe and illustrate the seedlings external morphological structures of A. sellowiana and P. cattleianum; verify the ability of E. involucrata seeds to germinate from the fractionation method and perform the physiological classification of A. sellowianaseeds with regard to desiccation tolerance and storage, and to verify the influence of drying methods on seed quality. The germination test substrates were tested on sand and germitest paper towel roll under temperatures of 15 ° C, 25 ° C, 20-30 ° C, 30 ° C and 35 ° C. In characterizing the morphology of seedlings, the root, cotyledon and foliage leaf of hypocotyl and epicotyl were illustrated and analyzed. The study consisted of fractionation treatments: control (seeds without fractionation), and fractions (seeds fractionated with a scalpel, transversely and longitudinally, where a half remained with hilum and the other without). The physiological classification of A. sellowiana seeds was performed through the drying and storage and the study of drying methods was conducted by treatments means: control (without drying), slow drying and fast drying. The germination test can be conducted at 25 ° C in a paper roll substrate for E. involucrata and E. pyriformis, and both substrates for A. sellowiana, and 25 ° C and alternating 20-30 ° C on sand and paper roll substrates and to C. xanthocarpa. The P. cattleianum and A. sellowiana germination is epigeous and phanerocotyledonal, forming seedling root system with axial pivoting long taproot with paracotyledons and simple eophylls, opposites. Fractionation uses is not efficient to maximize seeds lots, because germination is directly affected. A. sellowiana seeds are probably intermediate in relation to physiological classification, and the type of drying does not affect the quality of seeds

Abstract : Myrtaceae belongs to the order Myrtales in which about 130 genera and 6000 species are assigned. This family is considered important in various vegetation types, occurring in every continent, except Antarctica region. In Brazil, the family's species are distributed in all states. Acca sellowiana (pineaple-guava or feijoa), Plinia peruviana (jaboticaba), Campomanesia xanthocarpa (guabiroba) and Plinia spp. (jabuticabas). are Myrtaceae species that have shown potential for commercial use and are included in the project ?Plants to the Future?. In addition, these four species stand out for their organoleptic fruit flavours, pharmacological properties and ornamental value, among others. Moreover, currently, fruits of these species are produced on a small scale in Brazil, comparatively to the exotic fruit species, making them an excellent market opportunity to be further exploited in the country. Thus, this study aimed at to identify and to compare the plastid genomes (cpDNA) of four fruit species of Myrtaceae: Acca sellowiana, Campomanesia xanthocarpa, Eugenia uniflora, Plinia cauliflora, Plinia aureana and a hybrid species (Plinia sp.), in order to deepen on their evolutionary process and to develop specific chloroplast microsatellite markers (cpSSR) to carry out further studies on the genetic diversity of these species in their habitats. Therefore, the chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) of the species was extracted and purified, and the plastomas were sequenced by Illumina MiSeq plataform next-generation. After the sequencing, the de novo strategy was used, that this, without using another species as a reference. Full textMyrtaceae family includes more than 5500 species of trees and shrubs, mainly distributed in tropical and subtropical areas of the world. Species of this family have great ecological significance in forest ecosystems, and they are also economically important to the pharmaceutical, food, cosmetic and perfumery industries. The systematic of this family is very complex, in part by the species-richness of the family. The Hexachlamys O.Berg genus currently encompasses 10 to 15 species, distributed from southern and southeastern Brazil to Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay. It was considered an independent genus in 1968. In a recent review about Brazilian Myrtaceae genera, Hexachlamys was distincted from Eugenia genus based on a single morphological character: calyx pentamerous or hexamerous (Hexachlamys) versus Calyx tetramerous (Eugenia). However, this classification has been considered weak, since only one character is not enough to asure generic delimitations. Thus, the synonymization of the Hexachlamys in Eugenia has been suggested by some authors. Therefore, systematic and molecular phylogeny may be important to help the taxonomy of these groups. The aim of this study was to perform a molecular phylogenetic analysis for Hexachlamys genus. A set of four chloroplast (accD, rpoB, rpoC1e trnH-psbA) and one nuclear (ITS2) regions were selected. Phylogenetic analysis based on maximum parsimony and Bayesian methods were performed using these markers alone or in combination. The major variation found in these DNA regions was related to species differentiation and no one was related to differences between Eugenia and Hexachlamys. In general, both Parsimony and Bayesian analyses performed with all markers have showed that Hexachlamys species did not form a monophyletic group. This results corroborates with the morphological data that has included Hexachlamys in Eugenia. Thus, the molecular data of this study contributed with additional data to the systematic and taxonomy of this genus, and also with genetic information to help in the conservation of these species.

Abstract: Myrtaceae is one of the most representative families in southeast Brazilian vegetational formations (savanna, ¿campos rupestres¿, atlantic forest and deciduos forest). Given the great number of species, morphological similarities between species and occurrence in varied habitats, the family presents many taxonomic problems. Chromosomic studies in Neotropical species of Myrtaceae (Myrtoideae) are still scarce. Most of the previously accomplished studies documented Australian and African species (Leptospermoideae and Chamelaucioideae). In the Myrtoideae, it is known that poliploidy is frequent, in opposition to the remainder of the family, where disploid species predominate. These studies aimed to: 1) contribute to the chromosomic knowledge of the family, by means of the chromosomic numbers determination; 2) supply subsidies for towards the circunscription and delimitation of the species; 3) evaluate the importance of poliploidy in the evolution of the group and 4) derive inferences on the reproductive processes of the some species. The constancy of the diploid number 2n=22 (with exception of poliploids) and the small chromosome size complicated the use of the karyotypic data as subsidies to taxonomy of the Myrtaceae family. The occurrence of n=11 and 2n=22 in all species of the genera analized, doesn't clarify taxonomic doubts, such as the unification or separation of genera like Myrcia, Marlierea and Gomidesia and Myrciaria and Plinia. Poliploidy occurrence in different genera, amongst diploid species, has no value as a taxonomic character at the generic level. It was possible to verify the occurrence of chromosomic races (cytotypes), differentiated by ploidy level in several species. We observed the high frequence of poliploidy (20%), in opposite of the disploidy variations. No abnormality in the meiotic process was verified, indicating regularity of the sexual reproduction process

The plants release primary and secondary metabolites in the environment that may influence the development of adjacent vegetation, this interference phenomenon is called allelopathy. It is recognized as an important ecological process because it interferes with the structure, distribution, composition and dynamics of plant communities. Studies on allelopathic interactions may be useful in the search for natural phytotoxins are produced by plants or microorganisms to be used as natural herbicides, more specific and less harmful to the environment. According to floristic survey conducted by IBGE, Myrtaceae family is one of the major in the cerrado ecosystem. This study attempted to clarify the following issues: species of Myrtaceae family present in the cerrado (Brazilian savanna) exhibit allelopathic potential? There is a similar allelopathic response within genera? Among the active species, which is most promising for starting a bioprospecting? Some of these species has potential as a herbicide for use in agroforestry or organic production of food? To answer these questions were conducted experiments of seed germination and seedling growth of target species cultivated and weedy, and chemical extraction of active compounds in leaves of Myrcia tomentosa. The leaves of Blepharocalyx salicifolius, Campomanesia pubescens, Eugenia bimarginata, Eugenia klotzschiana, Eugenia myrcianthes, Eugenia punicifolia, Myrcia bella, Myrcia lingua, Myrcia multiflora, Myrcia splendens, Myrcia tomentosa, Psidium australe, Psidium cinereum, Psidium laruotteanum and Psidium rufum were collected , cleaned, crushed and stored in plastic bags until use. In the first stage, were carried out the germination and growth bioassays using aqueous extracts of leaf in a concentration of 10% (w / v). We selected three target species, Lactuca sativa and Solanum lycopersicum, both eudicotyledonous and a monocotyledonous Allium cepa. The extracts were applied to all Myrtaceae species compared with the control (distilled water). In the second phase, bioassays were carried out using aqueous extracts of leaves at concentrations of 5 and 10% (w / v). We selected as target species three weeds Euphorbia heterophylla, Echinochloa crus-galli and Ipomoea grandifolia. The leaf extracts of B. salicifolius, M. multiflora, M. splendens and M. tomentosa were compared to negative control (distilled water) and positive (herbicide Oxyfluorfen). In the third stage were carried out biotests germination, growth, and coleoptile of wheat (Triticum aestivum) to direct chemical extraction of active compounds of M. tomentosa. The extractions were carried out using dried leaves powdered and organic solvents of different polarity, the extracts were fractionated using chromatographic column and purified by HPLC. The isolated and purified compounds were identified in RMN13C and RMN1H, by comparison of spectra. The results showed that aqueous extracts of twelve out of fifteen donor species evaluated showed allelopathic activity and each species showed a distinct behavior regarding the allelopathic activity, no grouping by taxonomic proximity. Evaluating the four species most active on weeds species, was detected the potential and efficiency of the extracts, since these were more toxic to weeds species than the herbicide. The leaf extracts of M. tomentosa stood out for demonstrating high activity even at low concentrations, so was chemical extraction from powdered of leaves of M. tomentosa were isolated two compounds from the ethyl acetate extract: juglanin and avicularin, the difference between ix both is the presence of one hydroxyl attached to carbon 3' in avicularin molecule, this difference has an phytotoxic effect more pronounced in the juglanin. This paper is the first report of the presence of the flavonoids kaempferol (juglanin) and quercetin (avicularin) in species of Myrtaceae of cerrado (Brazilian savanna) and gave foundation for future studies on bioprospecting of the M. tomentosa, which did not find any reports of allelopathic studies, fractionation and identification of chemical compounds.

Full textMyrtaceae, consisting of woody plants, is one of the ten richest families in number of species among angiosperms in the world, as well as in Brazil, especially in the Atlantic Forest, also known as Floresta Ombrófila Densa and its subdivisions. When it comes to plants as shrubs or trees, it is expected to have a high representation in phytosociological studies, what truly happens, especially in upper montane Atlantic Forest of the southern and southeastern Brazil, along and on the tops of Serra do Mar and in the coastal region of eastern Brazil. The species of Myrtaceae, High Quiriri, Serra Quiriri, were studied to reach the following objectives: knowing the local flora in the upper montane formation of the High Quiriri, producing a floristic study in this family for a better understanding of vegetation at the top of the Serra do Mar in southern of Brazil. Collecting expeditions have been made since 2004 in Campos de Altitude and upper montane Atlantic Forest, collecting fertile specimens, with georeferencing and focus on two sub-watersheds, located above 1200 m asl. We have found 26 species, one of these with two varieties, presenting six genera with one species (Blepharocalyx salicifolius (Kunth) O. Berg, Calyptranthes concinna DC., Myrciaria delicatula (DC.) O. Berg,Pimenta pseudocaryophyllus (Gomes) Landrum, and Siphoneugena reitzii D. Legrand) Myrceugenia with seven (M. alpigena var. alpigena (DC.) Landrum, M. alpigena var. fuliginea Landrum, M. myrcioides (Cambess.) O. Berg, M. ovata var. regnelliana (O. Berg ) Landrum., M. pilotantha(Kiaerskou) Landrum, M. rufescens (DC.) D. Legrand & Kausel, M. seriatoramosa (Kiaersk) Kausel & D. Legrand and M. smithii Landrum, and also Myrcia with seven (M. guianensis (Aubl.) DC., M. hartwegiana (O. Berg) Kiaersk., M. lajeana D. Legrand, M. pulchra (O. Berg) Kiaersk., M. richardiana (O. Berg) Kiaersk., M. rupicola Legrand and M. squamata (Mattos & D. Legrand) Matttos. Based on the taxonomic studies, some biogeographic features were explored, as the characterizing of local geographical distribution of species of Myrtaceae from High Quiriri, and its physiognomic preferences. The maps were overlapped, forming areas of species distribution, thus contributing to the biogeographical and ecological knowledge of upper montane taxa of Myrtaceae in southern Brazil. Eight areas of geographical distribution were identified for 26 species of Myrtaceae High Quiriri: neotropical (one species); disjunction between the Andes and the Serra do Mar (one species); subequatorial sulamericana (five species), subequatorial brasileira (eight species); araucariana (five species), subtropical (three species); sulbrasileira (three species) and endemic restricted area (one specie). Endemic species for the formation of upper montane in Serra Quiriri were not observed. It was found that the majority of species prefer upper montane environments, slopes, tops of mountains and plateaus, rarely occurring in savannas and lowland formations. The fault line that forms rio dos Alemães (river) and rio Bracinho (river), shows to be an important splitter/border in the distribution of groups of Myrtaceae species in High Quiriri, as well as of local vegetation. In the High Quiriri, the richness of Myrtaceae is relatively high, compared to other studies in similar environments. The subtribe Myrciinae is the richest of all, with 57.69% (15 species): Myrcia and Myrceugenia seven, and Calyptranthes with one, confirming the importance of floristic and phytosociological studies in high-altitude ecosystems to better understand the diversity of this subtribe.

Full textPlinia edulis (Myrtaceae), popularly known as cambucá, belongs to the medicinal species employed in the treatment of throat affections by the caiçaras (communities of fishermen families living on coastal towns). This work aims to improve the knowledge of the plant considering its pharmacobotanical, phytochemical and pharmacological aspects. The lyophilized hydroethanolic extract of the leaves showed substances with pharmacological interest (flavonoids 0.99% and tannins 31.35%); elevated antioxidant activity at malondialdehyde production measure model, with Q1/2 of 0.21 µg/mL; extremely significant antiulcer activity at the acidified ethanol induction model, being able to decrease the Ulcerative Lesion Indices (81.5%), the Total Lesion Area (97.9%) and the Relative Lesion Area (97.6%), comparatively to the control, with previous oral administration of 400 mg/kg. The extract did not inhibit either the growth of Aspergillus Niger and Candida albicans in a concentration of 2,000 µg/mL or the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus in a concentration of 1,000 µg/mL. At the acute toxicity evaluation, no animals died at the oral administration assay of 5,000 mg/kg of extract. The phytochemical screening of the vegetal drug showed the presence of flavonoids, tannins, saponins and volatile oil. The content of volatile oil in fresh leaves was 0.02% (v/m) and the analysis showed, as main components, the epi-α-cadinol (21.72%), α-cadinol (20.22%) and trans-caryophyllene (14.19%). The most important characteristics to the vegetal drug identification were: chartaceous lanceolates leaves 14 to 17 cm long and 4 to 6 cm wide, evident midvein and translucent spots at the lamina, dorsiventral mesophyll, circular idioblasts in number of 2 to 4, perpendicularly to the adaxial surface, with druses or prismatic crystals, hypostomatic leaves, with anomocytic stomata predominantly, secretory cavities in both faces recovered by two cells with the comissural wall slightly sinuous. Photomicrographs illustrated the work.

_______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
Data for this work was collected from people of three distinct groups. The first group included migrants that now live in urban areas of the Distrito Federal, treated in the text as migrants 1, the second group was composed of migrant informants that now live on a Land Reform Rural Settlement in the Distrito Federal, treated as migrants 2, and the third group by informants that have always lived in a traditional community called Comunidade Quilombola do Cedro, near the city of Mineiros, Goiás, treated as non-migrants. In the Distrito Federal the informants were restricted to those that had lived a significant part of their lives in areas where the vegetation is Cerrado. Access to traditional knowledge was requested and granted by CGEN/IBAMA to protect the intelectual property of the informants over this knowledge. The choice of areas to be sampled was intentional and aimed at discovering relevant aspects and those that would contribute to build knowledge of how native species of Psidium are used. Field work was undertaken between January and September 2009. A total of 85 semistructured interviews were done in the three study areas, using the checklist-interview method. From a portfolio of 11, eight species were recognized, two of which are widely distributed (P. guajava and P. guineense). Species which were present in the study areas were collected and deposited in the Universidade de Brasília Herbarium (UB). Fruit consumption in natura was cited for all recognized species of Psidium. Other uses commonly cited were for medicinal purposes and as firewood. The main medicinal use cited was use of leaves or young shoots for treating dysenteries. Individual knowledge of non-migrants was higher than in either of the migrant communities. As a group, migrant communities recognized more species of Psidium than the non-migrant community. Migrants established on the Agrarian Reform Rural Settlement did not display knowledge of all Psidium species locally present, non-migrants did knowledge of the further uses and strategies for management of species of Psidium will be important for sustainable management of this resource. The genus shows promising potential as a food source in Central Brazil due high cultural acceptance.

Abstract : Natural products are a very important subject for scientifical research area. Eugenia species have interesting biological activities, but there are few studies for E. hiemalis. Neurodegenerative diseases, as well as other diseases resulting from oxidative stress and antibiotic resistance are challenges in the search for new drugs. This study aimed to investigate the aerial parts of E. hiemalis (Itapuã, RS) in a bioguided study by anticholinesterase, antibacterial (mollicutes) and antioxidant activities, as well as to analyze chemical composition and biological activity of its essential oil (Blumenau, SC). Chromatographic fractionation was performed in columns monitored by thin layer chromatography. Isolated compounds were analyzed by spectroscopic methods. The four season?s oils were extracted in Clevenger apparatus and analyzed by gas chromatography. Biological activities were evaluated by partner groups. The CH2Cl2 extracts showed the best results for anticholinesterase and antibacterial activity. GE1 (miconidin acetate), GE2 (primin), GE6 and GE8 (unpublished benzoquinones in the literature) were isolated from CH2Cl2 leaves extract. GE1, GE2 and GE9 (methylolivetol) were isolated from the CH2Cl2 flower buds extract, along with other compound. GE1 and GE2 showed antibacterial activity and GE2 presented also anticholinesterase activity. From the MeOH leaves extract (better antioxidant activity) 11 compounds were isolated and one of them identified as quercitrin (GE14). From the essential oils 42 components were identified; the major compounds were spathulenol, bicyclogermacrene, d-cadinene and ß-caryophyllene. The content of non-functionalized compounds increased in the warmer seasons. The oils showed low activity in the tested models. Quinones were not reported for other Myrtaceae species, so these date set a different chemical profile for E. hiemalis. The results, particularly with respect to antibacterial and acetylcholinesterase activities, indicate good potential for follow-up investigations with this species, including other models, and in silico studies with primin and acetate miconidin.

Native Myrtaceae of Brazil (guava tree, guabiroba tree, jaboticaba tree, etc.) they shelter an indigenous entomofauny, which survives in these hosts without, seemingly, present in populational outbreak. In the eucalyptus, that is also a Myrtaceae, even so exotic, an increase of the number of species of herbivore insects is observed that come causing serious damages to the national eucalyptus crop. Thus, the question is, why the same insect is a plague in a type of plant (eucalyptus) and not in other (guava). The growth, the development and the reproduction of the insects depend on the amount and quality of the food that is used. It is known that plants have chemical compounds, and that when attacked by herbivore insects, such compounds are used as a defense of the plant, harming the performance of the pest outbreaks and/or serving as guide (volatile) for the natural enemies (IN) they find these herbivore insects. In reason of the exposed, this work was divided in three stages that approached the survival potential and reproduction of the insect herbivore Thyrinteina arnobia (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) and the attraction of the predator Podisus nigrispinus (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) in two species of plants: Eucalyptus cloesiana (eucalyptus) and Psidium guajava (guava). In the first stage, the development was evaluated (biology) of this herbivore in guava leaves and eucalyptus in laboratory through the calculation of the rate growth intrinsic (rm). The found rm showed that the development of T. arnobia was better in the host eucalyptus (0.103) than in its origin host (0. 067) (guava). Possibly, guava plants possess chemical compounds that act negatively on populations of herbivores and, in eucalyptus, seemingly this kind of defense was supplanted by these herbivores. The second stage evaluated the preference of foraging of P. nigrispinus to the two species of plants studied here. The rehearsals were accomplished using three plants (it controls) inserted with other three test plants forming an hexagon. In the center of that hexagon it was liberated, in each test, a total of 100 true bug. The experiment consisted of four repetitions for the following treatments: (a) guava plants and eucalyptus without offense; (b) eucalyptus plants reviled by caterpillars of T. arnobia, but without the permanence of the same ones in the plants, and plant without offense; (c) guava plants reviled by caterpillars of T. arnobia, but without the permanence of the same ones in the plants, and plant without offense; (d) eucalyptus plants and guava reviled by caterpillars of T. arnobia, but without the permanence of the same ones in the plants; (e) eucalyptus plants and guava reviled by caterpillars of T. arnobia, with the permanence of the same ones in the plants. P. nigrispinus preferred guava plants reviled by caterpillars of T. arnobia with the permanence of the same ones in the plants. Additeonally, reviled plants, by caterpillars of T. arnobia, without the permanence of the same ones in the plants, they were favorite for the true bug, same when plants of the same species were compared in the tests. Plants without offense (clean) they also attracted the true bug, even so, the percentage of its recaptures in guava plants was larger than in eucalyptus plants. The results obtained in this work demonstrate that the predator P. nigrispinus besides discriminating among the scents liberated by species of native plants (guava) and eucalyptus, also discriminates volatile associated to the herbivory. The third stage evaluated the mortality of T. arnobia in field in guava plants and eucalyptus, and in laboratory, when the system of defense of the plant was induced. In field, the mortality was larger in the host guava (70.77%) than in the host eucalyptus (22.00%). In the laboratory test, for the evaluation of induced defense, leaves of clean eucalyptus plants were used (without having suffered any, kind of offense) and leaves of eucalyptus plants reviled by caterpillars of T. arnobia, to verify if plants of reviled eucalyptus activate its defense mechanism against the herbivory. The larval mortality was of 30.00% in plants reviled against 10.00% in clean plants. These results demonstrate that, when attacked by herbivores, the eucalyptus plants activate their defense mechanism, what affects the development of the herbivores negatively. In agreement with the results presented in that work, it is possible to conclude that, the guava plants are not an adequate host for the development and establishment of populations of T. arnobia (in spite of being one of its native host), due to direct chemical defenses (that act on the herbivore) or insinuations (that attract IN for herbivore predarem). On the other hand, T. arnobia comes, seemingly, developing, it self adapting and maintaining its populations in eucalyptus plantations. One way or another, the herbivores are getting to break the barriers of defense of the plants in eucalyptus, to the contrary with guava plants, where those herbivores have larger difficulty in settling down.

Abstract: Myrtaceae is known as one of the most complex families of angiosperms. The last taxonomic revision of Myrcia was made 153 years ago and since then many new species were described, leaving Myrcia as the second largest genus of the tribe Myrteae. The high number of species in the genus and the lack of a complete and updated taxonomic revision resulted in many species complexes in Myrcia. One of these complexes is investigated in this work and includes four species (M. laruotteana, M. lajeana, M. selloi and M. tomentosa) with wide distribution and a lot of morphological variation, making it difficult to distinguish these taxa. This study used ISSR markers to investigate the correlation between the genetic variability of populations of these species with morphological, geographical, phytogeographic and taxonomic aspects, in order to clarify the delimitation of species. Taking into account the results obtained in these analyzes, a new proposal of specific classification is presented with descriptions of accepted taxa, geographical, flowering and fruiting data, and identification key. In the study of population genetics with ISSR, the value of genetic diversity (He = 0.215) was lower than the value for perennial, widely distributed and cross-fertilization species. This can be explained in part by self-compatibility that species within M. laruotteana complex apparently present, as previously reported in the literature. None of the groups that reflect morphological, geographical and phytogeographic aspects showed good genetic structure, i.e., none of them showed any genetic discontinuity that could represent the taxa involved in the complex. The groups represented by the current taxonomic circumscription of the complex also did not show good genetic structure. The groups formed from the Bayesian analysis showed better genetic structure from the AMOVA (12% variation among populations within groups and 27% variation between groups). The Bayesian analysis with the dendrogram formed showed two major groups, the first with all populations of M. tomentosa, and the second containing mixed populations from other species. From these results and taking into account the large amount of variation between the morphological extremes of the species, we propose a new classification for the complex, with the synonymization of M. lajeana under M. laruotteana. Myrcia tomentosa and M. laruotteana differ from each other mainly by the indumenta, which is dense in the former and almost absent in the latter. Myrcia selloi differs from the others by the caduceus remnants of the hypanthium and calyx, leaving circular apical scar on the fruit

Abstract : The Myrtaceae family stands out as one of the most abundant and diverse in Brazilian ecosystems and therefore a rich source of bioactive compounds. Considering the therapeutic potential of this family, the aim of this work was to perform the phytochemical study of four species represented by the genera Myrcia, Eugenia and Psidium, and in addition, to evaluate the biological effects of extracts, fractions and compounds isolated from them. The chromatographic fractionation of the insoluble and ethyl acetate fractions from E. catharinae led to the isolation of the monomethyl-olivetol, ß-sitosterol and stigmasterol as a mixture, rotundic acid, myricitrin, quercetin and catechin. From P. cattleyanum was isolated the glycoside flavonoid quercitrin. From the ethyl acetate fractions of species M. splendens and M. palustris was obtained in high yield the myricitrin flavonoid. In butanol fraction of M. palustris, besides myricitrin was obtained also myricetin and quercetin as a mixture. Using the coupling HPLC-SPE-ttNMR with a microplate-based high-resolution assay was possible to identify, from the specie M. palustris, 4-hydroxycinnamic acid, myricitrin, quercetin, myricetin and quercitrin (all compounds with antioxidant activity); myricetin and quercitrin also active for inhibition of a-glucosidase. The plants were assessed by different biological tests. For the toxicity assay using A. salina, the activity was concentrated in the hexane fractions of the species. All species showed good antioxidant activity, especially M. splendens. In vitro acetylcholinesterase inhibition assay, the highest activity was observed in the species M. splendens and M. palustris, reaching inhibition values of 99.9%. No significant antibacterial activity was observed for any of the studied species. M. splendens and M. palustris were evaluated in relation to antifungal and anti-inflammatory potential. M. splendens was more active in the antifungal assay, showing high activity against Candida strains. In the anti-inflammatory assay using the carrageenan-induced pleurisy model, the two species have demonstrated the ability to inhibit the inflammatory process with values ranging from 30 to 70% at the highest dose tested.

Foi possível identificar: ácido gálico, 2¿,4¿-dihidroxi-5¿-metil-6¿-metoxichalcona, 2¿,4¿-dihidroxi-3¿,5¿-dimetil-6¿-metoxi-chalcona, miricitrina e quercetina em C. guaviroba e ácido gálico, 2¿,4¿-dihidroxi-6¿-metoxichalcona (cardamonin), 2¿,4¿-dihidroxi-5¿-metil-6¿-metoxichalcona, quercetina, quercitrina e miricitrina em C. adamantium e isolar dois compostos de C. adamantium, cardamonin e miricitrina. Extratos e frações apresentaram atividade antiproliferativa in vitro frente a algumas linhagens celulares tumorais e a fração diclorometânica de C. guaviroba apresentou baixa toxicidade aguda in vivo e atividade antitumoral in vivo.
Abstract: Brazil, featuring a rich and diverse flora, is a potential source of new substances with pharmacological activity and fewer side effects. This work was carried out to evaluate the in vitro anti-proliferative potential, in vivo antitumoural activity in a solid-tumor Erlich model and in vivo antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activity of Campomanesia adamatium, typical of the Cerrado biome, and Campomanesia guaviroba, found in the Atlantic Forest. A crude ethanol crude extract of the leaves was prepared and a liquid-liquid partition was performed. Quantification of total phenolic compounds and flavonoids was determined by colorimetric assays. The chemical profile was determined by ESI-MS/MS and compounds quantified by UHPLC-MS. The extracts and fractions of these species have phenolic substances, including flavonoids and the analysis by ESI-MS/MS and UHPLC-MS allowed the identification of gallic acid, 2',4'-dihydroxy-5'-methyl-6'-methoxichalcone, 2',4'-dihydroxy-3',5'-dimethyl-6'-methoxichalcone, quercetin and miricitrin in C. guaviroba and gallic acid, 2 ', 4'-dihydroxy-6'-methoxichalcone, 2', 4'-diidroxi-5'-methyl-6'-methoxichalcone, quercetin, quercitrin and miricitrin in C. adamantium. It was possible to isolate two compounds from C. adamantium, cardamonin and miricitrin. The extracts and fractions exhibited antiproliferative activity in vitro against some tumor cell lines and the dichlorometanic fraction of C. guaviroba showed low acute toxicity and antitumor activity in vivo. The evaluation of the anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive activities of the dichlorometanic fractions of C. adamantium and C. guaviroba showed similar activities to the positive control indomethacin. Thus, this work demonstrated the pharmacological potential these species as confirmation of the presence of phenolic compounds in these extracts

Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels belongs to the Myrtaceae family and sub Myrtoideae family. Several studies have shown pharmacological activity S. cumini such as antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant. Results found in the literature reports the presence of phenolic compounds in this species. The leaves of S. cumini were collected from a single plant every two months during the period from 08/2013 to 08/2014 to obtain essential oils by hydrodistillation of fresh and dried leaves. The extract obtained was refluxed with 70% ethanol. The crude extract was fractionated by liquid-liquid partition obtaining hexane fraction (FHAZ), chloroform fraction (FCAZ), ethyl acetate fraction (FAAZ), butanol fraction (FBAZ) and hydroalcoholic fraction (FHAAZ). FAAZ was fractionated by chromatography high performance against current (HPCCC) HEMWats using solvent systems (hexane: ethyl acetate: methanol: water) and EBWats (ethyl acetate: butanol: water). The yield of essential oil of fresh leaves was higher in the period that the plant was in inflorescence stage and a decrease occurred shortly after the end of season fruit production and the following samples a slight stabilization in revenue. The result of the influence of temperature essential oil showed a yield increase of sheets S. cumini periods in higher temperatures. Proceeds essential oils from dried leaves were always higher than the values found in the fresh leaves. It was also observed change in concentration of secondary metabolites, e.g., α- pinene in June / 2014 dry leaves 46.34% and 39.40% fresh leaves. In relation to the antioxidant activity assays, activity was observed for all tested against the fractions and extract the radical DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-picryl-hydrazyl). The IC50 value of FAAZ fractions, FBAZ and FHAAZ were close to the standard of gallic acid. The result of IC50 fraction FAAZ 9.40 ± 0.40 μg / mL was lower than those found in the literature. The IC50 values obtained for the subfractions were HPCCC: FAAZ81 22.13 ± 1.12 μg / mL, FAAZ82 8.60 ± 0.26 μg / mL, FAAZ83 14.17 ± 0.60 μg / ml and FAAZ84 2.87 ± 1.25 μg / mL. This was shown by HPLC / MS the presence of substances in the fraction 36 in ethyl acetate (FAAZ). 19 first being identified as belonging to the class of flavonoids and other phenolic compounds, with antioxidant activity against DPPH radical.

Palavras chave: Quitosana, 2,4-D, germinação in vitro, Myrtaceae.
Abstract: Campomanesia xanthocarpa, known as gabirobeira, is a fruit tree with ecological importance. In the medicinal folk its leaves and bark are employed for treatment of many diseases, mainly gastric illness. The aim of this study was to develop a protocol of in vitro callus culture of gabirobeira and to study the phenolic compounds present in the calli. Seeds were germinated in vitro on WPM and WPM/2 media, supplemented or not with sucrose (30 g.L-1). The cultures were maintained under light (30 ?mol.m-2.s-1) with a 16 h photoperiod or in the dark, at 25±2 ºC. The seedlings were used as explant source. Leaf discs with 5 mm diameter were introduced on MS culture media containing 2,4-diclorophenoxiacetic acid (2,4-D) at concentrations of 5, 10 and 20 ?M. The four lines of calli with the greatest growth rate were selected. Among these the one with the greatest growth rate was cultured in MS medium supplemented or not with 500 mg.L-1 chitosan by 60 days at least. The phenolic content of line 01 with or without chitosan, was also compared with the content of the line with the second greatest growth rate. The germination of seeds occurred in all treatments and conditions and no statistical difference was observed among them. The medium supplemented with 2,4-D in all concentrations showed callus formation without statistical difference among the concentrations. The calli treated with chitosan had the double of phenolic compound content. When compared the two lines with the greatest growth rate, both cultured in media without chitosan, it was found that the second line presented half the content of phenolic compounds of line 01. In this study it was possible to establish an in vitro callus culture that allows the evaluation of phenolic compound content, and to show that this content was increased in the presence of chitosan in the culture medium. Full textThe conservation of the Atlantic Rain Forest remnants involves the development of sustainable use programs that require an extensive knowledge of its flora and fauna. Myrtaceae is an important family in this biome, being dominant in many fragments, and is also recognized by the production of volatile oils, substances with great potential for food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Considering that there is a lack of scientific information on essential oil variability for Brazilian Myrtaceae species, this work aimed to evaluate the changes of these metabolites in the leaves of some species, considering diurnal and seasonal aspects, and geographical location, as well as to investigate some biological activities. The oils were obtained by hydrodistlillation and analyzed by GC-MS. The results showed a predominance of sesquiterpenes compounds for seven of the nine species studied, especially espatulenol, β-caryophyllene, α-cadinol and ς-elemene. However, no diurnal or seasonal patterns of variability were observed for all target species, but changes in the composition among the analyzed years were found for Campomanesia guaviroba (DC.) Kiaersk., Myrcia splendens (Sw.) DC. and Myrcia macrocarpa DC. Differences in volatile oil composition for specimens collected in different locations were observed for Eugenia cuprea (O. Berg) Nied. and Calyptranthes lucida Mart. Ex DC., but with an inversion, between the two species, of the main sesquiterpene biosynthetic routes acting in each area, suggesting that the variations are not due to environmental differences. The analysis of the biological activities showed that the investigated volatile oils do not exhibit an important anticholinesterasic potential, but rather an antimicrobial one, particularly the antifungal activity of C. guaviroba, M. splendens and M. macrocarpa oils against Cladosporium cladosporioides and C. sphaerospermum. The obtained results suggested that endogenous factors are more important for the volatile oil variability in the studied Myrtaceae species than the environmental aspects. The wide individual variability observed suggests a high genetic diversity for these species, which is an important issue for the establishment of strategies for Atlantic Rain Forest conservation programs.

O embrião é do tipo pimentóide e a germinação é epígea e fanerocotiledonar. Abstract: Objective of this study was to obtain information about the germination, morphology and sanity of Psidium rufum DC. For the analysis of germination were tested different substrates: paper roll, blotter paper, sand and vermiculite, and three different temperatures: 20 °C, 25 °C and 30 °C, with five replicates of 40 seeds for each treatment. After determining the best substrate and temperature was tested the presence and absence of light on germination of specie. To describe and illustrate the morphology fruits and seeds, were used 100 randomly seeds and fruits. The identification of fungi associated with seeds was performed by the methods of blotter test and potato-dextrose-agar. To check the transmission of the fungi to seedlings were sown four replicates of 25 seeds for each seed lot in vermiculite. Tested the pathogenicity of fungi Pestalotiopsis sp. and Cylindrocladium sp. seedlings of P. rufum. The best results for the germination test were obtained with the blotter paper substrate at a temperature of 25 ° C. The light influences germination of P. rufum, the specie considered as the preferred positive photoblastic. The germination was started on the 15th day after the installation of the test and can be closed on the 37th day. The fruits of this species are smooth, shiny, hairless, red-purple color when ripe, rounded shape, fleshy and indehiscent bacóide type. Can submit 1 to 7 seeds. The seeds are campylotropous, reniform, with seed coat smooth, opaque and stone, oleaginous endosperm cream color. The embryo is the pimentóide type and germination is epigeal and phanerocotylar. The seedling has foliaceous cotyledons, light green color, with entire margin, slightly marked ribs, smooth, ovate shape, acute base and apex acute. The root is axial, cylindrical, winding, light brown color. Eophylls are crossed opposite, simple, petiolate, membranous and elliptical, with entire margin, apex and acute base. The fungi potentially pathogenic found were Cylindrocladium sp., Pestalotiopsis sp. and Cladosporium sp., and the saprophytic fungi Penicillium sp. and Chaetomium sp. There was no transmission of fungi from seeds to seedlings of P. rufum, it is observed that the fungus Cylindrocladium sp. is pathogenic in leaves of seedlings of the species. Key-words: Psidium rufum, germination, plant morphology, seed fungi.

Full textThis work is part of the \"Phanerogam Flora of São Paulo State\" project (original title: \"Flora Fanerogâmica do Estado de São Paulo\"). Up to now, 151 families have been includedthroughout seven volumes published which, however, represents only 43.2% of total speciesinitially estimated the project. Given that a total of 180 familiesare estimated to exist in the State, some highly representative families have not yet been published. That is the case of Orchidaceae, the Fabaceae and Myrtaceae families, which arediscussed in this dissertation. This study aimsat performing a taxonomic study of Myrtaceae, Myrcia section Gomidesia inthe state of São Paulo. Myrtaceae, with about 3800-5800 species, has a pantropical distribution, and is among the most important families in Neotropical communities and one of the most representative in the Brazil\"s flora, with approximately 1000 native. It includescommercially relevant species such asEucalyptus L\'Her. (genus introduced), used as raw material in the timber industry, and many edible species such as Psidium guajava L. (Guava), Plinia cauliflora (Mart.) Kausel (Jabuticaba), Eugenia uniflora L. (Pitanga), Eugenia dysenterica DC. (Cagaita), among others. All native species of Myrtaceae are edible. The area of São PauloStateis 248,256 km² yet its native vegetationcovers only 3% of it.It has a well defined wet and dry seasons, and ahighly diverse vegetation, mainly consisting of rainforests, seasonal forest, savannah and pioneer formationsIt is estimated that there are 264 species of Myrtaceae in this State, 11 of which were included in this study\"s section contemplated in the present work. The study wasconducted on data collected via literature review, herbarium inspection, and field observations, based on 739 specimens store on herbaria collections. At the end of the survey, 18 species were registered, one of which (and possibly two more) was unaccounted for the scienceand finally five of them are now represented in the State of São Paulo. Finally, comments on the taxonomic identification key, illustrations, and statewide distribution maps of the species are presented.

Full textThe family Myrtaceae has many fruiting species, some are commercially explored. Among those species is the cambuci (Campomanesia phaea). The objectives this work were to describe the reproductive phenology, the floral biology, the reproductive system, and to identify the pollinators of cambuci in order to generate new knowledge that may help increase the productivity of this species. The study about reproductive phenology was conducted for two years, in an area of natural occurrence and in a commercial crop. The phenophases (flowering and fruit set) were monitored with Activity index (synchrony) and Intensity index (Fournier intensity) and correlated with abiotic factors (temperature, rainfall, and day length). The results showed that flowering and fruit set of C. phaea in natural area and crop were different even under same climatic conditions. The flowering and fruit set were more intense and synchrony in the crop. The abioctic factors do not explain these differences in the phenophases between the study areas, but other variables, such as soil fertilization and pollinator diversity, play an important role. In the pollination study of C. phaea were observed the anthesis duration, floral resources, stigma receptivity, and pollen viability. The reproductive system of C. phaea was investigated based on the P:O ratio and by carrying out manual pollination tests. The flower visitors were captured and determined the most efficient pollinators, according to effectiveness by number of pollen grains deposited in the stigma and number of fruit set. The flowers of C. phaea last two days, are hermaphrodite, and have pollen as the only resource offered to flower visitors. Its anthesis is nocturnal and begins around 5 h. The reproductive system of C. phaea is self-incompatible. Were collected 52 species of flower visitors and among them the most efficient in pollination were nocturnal and crepuscular bees (Megalopta sodalis, Megommation insigne, Ptiloglossa latecalcarata e Zikanapis seabrai). Besides these bees, the flowers of C. phaea flowers were also visited and pollinated by Apis mellifera in crepuscular and diurnal periods. In order to understand how the nocturnal/crepuscular bees find cambuci flowers in darkness flower volatiles were collected (at night and during the day) by dynamic headspace method and after analyzed by GC-MS. In addition, electroantennographic (GC-EAD) and behavioural experiments (bioassays) were performed to test if compounds identified from cambuci flowers are capable in eliciting electrophysiological and behavioural responses in nocturnal/crepuscular bees. In total 14 volatiles compounds were found in C. phaea flowers, the same in the night and day samples. Although, the relative scent composition differed between these two periods. The volatile emission is higher during the activity of nocturnal/crepuscular bees, and some compounds are more eminent during the night (e.g., 1-Octanol) and some during the day (e.g., 2-Phenylethanol). The nocturnal/crepuscular were attracted by synthetic scent of the cambuci flowers. Apis mellifera also showed positive responds towards for electroantennographic and behavioural bioassays. The results showed that volatiles emitted at night by C. phaea flowers have attractive function to nocturnal/crepuscular bees, and suggest that 1-Octanol can be the key compound for this attraction.

Full textPlinia edulis (Myrtaceae), an arboreous species popularly known as cambucá, is native in Brazilian Atlantic Rain Forest. Despite its traditional uses in many diseases, which include gastric disorders, no reports are available on the relationship between the biological activities of its extract and its chemical constituents. This thesis reports the evaluations of the the aqueous ethanol extract of leaves of P. edulis and its fractions on gastroprotective effect, antioxidant capacity, cytotoxicity and mutagenicity of. In order to correlate the secondary metabolites and the efficacy of the crude drug in traditional medicine, the extract was submitted to solvent partition followed by chromatographic fractionation. The extract exhibited significant gastroprotective effect on HCl/ethanol-induced ulcers in rats at doses of 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg p.o., even more active than the reference drug lansoprazole. Among the fractions, the hexane fraction (100 mg/kg p.o.) was the most effective, but showed lower activity than the crude extract. In addition, the gastroprotective effect of ursolic acid was evaluated. Although others triterpenes are well known as gastroprotective agents, ursolic acid (50 mg/kg p.o.) reduced the lesion area, but did not show significant activity on this model. The extract did not show mutagenicity at the concentration of 20 mg/plate in the Ames test and exhibited high antioxidant activity, with EC50 of 5.75 µg/mL on the DPPH assay and ORAC value of 3948 µmol Trolox/g of extract. The extract and its fractions were evaluated for cytotoxic activity against human tumour cell lines as UACC62 (melanoma), MCF-7 (breast), NCI 460 (lung, non-small cells), OVCAR03 (ovarian), PC-03 (prostate), HT-29 (colon), 786-0 (renal), NCI-ADR (breast expressing phenotype multiple drugs resistance) and CHO (Chinese Hamster Ovary) normal cell line in vitro. The extract and its fractions showed selectively dose-dependent cytotoxicity against cancer cells and proliferative activity in normal cells. The hexane and ethyl acetate fractions yielded β-amyrin, lupeol, β-sitosterol, oleanolic acid, ursolic acid, maslinic acid, corosolic acid, ethyl gallate, gallic acid, quercitrin, myricitrin and quercetin, which were identified based on spectrometric analyses. These results provide scientific support to the traditional use of this species, which are probably associated with the flavonoids and triterpenoids identified in the extract.

Full textMyrtaceae is recognized for being one of the most abundant angiosperm family in greater part of brazilian vegetational formation, always appearing between the most representative families on the floristic surveys. The family is also well represented on the Cerrado s phytophysiognomies, mostly the campo rupestres , emerging between the 10 families with the highest richness at the already inventoried areas. Myrcia DC., one of the family most representative genus, shows about 400 species, with Minas Gerais and Goias states considered the main distribution center. This study has the purpose to catalog Myrcia s species that occur at Minas Gerais campos rupestres , providing diagnosis, occurrence and conservation data for the species from Minas Gerais state. The checklist were carried out amongst the analysis of nearly 2.500 exsicatas of Myrcia stored at BHCB, HUFU, MBM, OUPR, RB, SP, SPF and UEC herbaria. Additional collect were realized at the Ouro Branco, Ouro Preto, Lavras Novas, Biribiri, Milho Verde, Conselheiro Mata, Diamantina, Mendanha, Cabral, Cristália, Grão-Mogol and Botumirim slopes. Myrcia is represented at Minas Gerais campos rupestres for 42 species, twelve of this species has a vast distribution on the state, which arises practically all campos rupestres area. From this amount, 23 species crop up in campo rupeste , as in cerrado s.s. or in forest formations associated with campos rupestres physiognomy. Nine species occurs only in campo rupestre in Minas Gerais, and shows restrict distribution to a few areas in the state, cause of it they are considered typical of these areas. In reference of the conservation status, 26 species are related to the vulnerable category, two at the endangered and other two at the critically endangered categories. Only twelve species are included at the low risk category, for being abundant and well distributed at Minas Gerais slopes.

_______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
Blepharocalyx, salicifolius (Kunth) O. Berg presents broad latitudinal distribution in South America, especially in Brazil, and occurs in both Cerrado and in the Atlantic Forest. The aim of this thesis was to study the variation on leaf morphometry from different biomes, the genetic variation from different populations on a regional scale using four genetic markers (psbA-trnH, matK, ETS and ITS), and local aspects of population structure and dynamics population of the species in areas of cerrado sensu, stricto (preserved from the fire and disturbed by frequent fire) in the core area of the tropical savanna. The species had high leaf plasticity evidenced by morphometric analysis. The morphological variation of leaves showed consistent relationship with biomes. The plasticity of leaf shapes and sizes of B., salicifolius match the wide geographic distribution of the species and wide bioclimatic conditions of occurence. The more plastic leaf shapes were found in the Atlantic Forest. The results of different combinations of genetic markers showed that B., salicifolius, is monophyletic. The genus however proved to be paraphyletic. B., salicifolius, appeared as sister group to the group Pimenta. The evolutionary history of this species seems to be more related to larger6scale interactions between the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado and a possible South6North migration. A comparative analysis of population structure of B.,salicifolius showed that the density was higher in protected when compared with frequent burned are. This species seems to be height competitor, since the presence or absence of disturbance does not modify the height distribution on populations. In the fire protected area the density was high which affected the population structure so that the majority of individuals in the were constituted by high and small diameter individuals.

Full textLandscape change and habitat fragmentaiton are recognized as threats to global biodiversity.Areas with remaining primary vegetation and protected areas are insufficient to ensure species conservation. Forest monocultures are potencial alternative habitats for native species and may contribute to the conservation of biodiversity. Brazil is the country with the largest area occupied with eucalypt plantations, this area is also growing in the last years. Identifying which factors influence the biodiversity on plantations is important to species conservation. The objective of this study was to know the understory species composition in Eucalyptus saligna Sm. plantations and to evaluate the influence of soil type and stand age on species richness and species composition. Surveys of vegetation were performed in stands on clay and sandy soils where the eucalypt trees were three and seven years old. Other soil characteristics, litter production by stand trees, canopy open and land use surrounding stands were evaluated as environmental factors. 218 plant species were found in plantations understory. The stands on clay soil were richer than those on sandy soil. Most of the environmental factors evaluated were also different among stands on different soils type. It was not possible to verify differences on species richness and species composition nor environmental factors between stand ages. Soil type could be a more limiting factor than forest age to determine species richness and species composition on plantations understory. Sandy soils are poorer in species, but they are also important to conservation, since species that happen on sandy soils are adapted to low resources availability and do not occur at other locations. The large number of native species founded in eucalypts plantation understory indicates that these plantations may assist some native species conservation. Nevertheless, further research is needed to understand the conservation potential from eucalypt plantations. It is recommended other studies to be done for a better comprehension and to increase the importance of plantation forests to conservation, mainly studies about biology of key species, interactions between animals and plants and the effect of different management options.
