Abstract:

“Knowing your history can give you the tools to shape your future.” Gloria Feldt’s insightful quote inspires us to delve into the past and learn from those who came before us. This article chronicles the journey of several individuals who shaped the field of orthodontics and influenced the formation of the specialty of orofacial myology. The early years of orthodontics were challenging. In addition to the struggle to elevate the focus of orthodontics beyond mechanics, there was the challenge to convince academia to deem it worthy of post-graduate study. Dr. Edward H. Angle left his indelible mark on orthodontics and planted seeds regarding the mutual relationship of dentition with oral-facial muscles, respiration, and oral habits. In the mid-1900s, Dr. Walter J. Straub picked up the mantle. His stated quest was to identify and rectify dental relapse. His search led him to investigate allergies, oral habits, bottle feeding, and swallowing. There were others, but primarily as a result of these two men, the International Association of Orofacial Myology (IAOM) was created. Over the past 50 years, the IAOM has continued to grow, evolve, and set the gold standard for excellence in the treatment of orofacial myofunctional disorders.

Alshaleel, Mohammed Khair. "The regulation and governance of mutual funds in the UK in the quest for investor protection : lessons for Middle Eastern countries." Thesis, University of Essex, 2017. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/19778/.

Full text
Abstract:
The mutual funds regulation in Middle Eastern countries is still insufficient and lacks the detailed rules that regulate all aspects of the mutual funds industry. Despite the fact that the current mutual fund regulation addresses different aspects of the fund industry, it is still far from the international standards applied in many countries such as the UK and the USA. The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate the possibility of exporting certain essential regulatory rules form the mutual funds regulation in the UK to the mutual funds regulation in Middle Eastern countries in order to enhance investors’ protection. Enhancing the mutual funds regulations generally and investors protection particularly would accelerate the development of the mutual funds industry in those countries. The first chapter of the thesis is an introduction. The second chapter defines mutual funds by showing their significant role in the financial market and showing their unique attributes which differentiate them from other financial institutions. The third chapter scrutinises the existing mutual funds laws and regulations and their amendments in the UK, namely the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000, the Open Ended Investments Companies Regulations 2001 and the Financial Conduct Authority Sourcebook. The fourth chapter examines the governance of mutual funds under the current legal framework in the UK. The fifth chapter focuses on how the features discussed in the previous chapters could be used in Middle Eastern countries. Finally, chapter six provides the general conclusion of the thesis and the contribution of this research. The findings from the research show that the unique nature of mutual funds as useful financial institutions comes from the combination of the advantages offered to the investors by one financial institution. They also illustrate that mutual funds in the UK are governed by a robust legal framework that regulates nearly all aspects of the industry in detail. This legal framework adopts efficient governance mechanisms that provide investors with a high level of protection. The governance mechanisms ensure investors protection and play a key role in mitigating the potential conflicts of interests between the self-interests of the fund management and the interests of the investors. Another important finding of the research is that the current mutual funds regulations in Middle Eastern countries lack the detailed rules, and they do not regulate all aspects of the fund industry. Therefore, mutual funds investors are not well protected. Finally, the research shows that certain regulatory rules form the UK regulations are exportable to Syrian Mutual funds regulations and can be exportable to Middle Eastern countries. These rules will increase investors’ protection and fill the gap between the international standard and those applied in Middle Eastern countries.

Atkinson-Grosjean, Janet. "Adventures in the nature of trade : the quest for ’relevance’ and ’excellence’ in Canadian science." Thesis, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/13007.

Full text
Abstract:
The study addresses: (1) changes in Canada's science-policy climate over the past two decades; (2) impacts o f such changes on the conduct and organization of academic science; and (3) publicinterest implications of promoting, in public institutions, research 'relevant' to private sector needs. Working within the interdisciplinary traditions of science studies, the conceptual framework draws on the cross-cutting tensions at the intersection of public and private space, and basic and applied science. These tensions are articulated in two opposing models: 'open science' and 'overflowing networks'. Canada's Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE) program provides the study's empirical focus. Founded in 1988, the NCE program rests on dual goals of research excellence and commercial relevance. It promotes a national research capacity that 'floats across' existing provincial institutions. The first part of the study investigates the evolution of the NCE program against the background of Canadian science policy. The second part problematizes the notion of 'network' while investigating one of the NCEs in depth, examining the scientific, commercial, cultural, and spatial-structural practices that are the outcomes of policy. Examination of these practices reveals not only the cultural and commercial shifts sought by policy, but also unintended consequences such as regional clustering; elitism and exclusion; problems with social and fiscal accountability; tensions with host institutions; and goal displacement between science and commerce.

Abstract:
Abstract The study of deliberative democracy stands today at a methodological cutting edge. Here, perhaps uniquely, normative theory, practitioner invention, and empirical analysis all depend actively and recursively on one another. Conscious synergy permeates this volume. Empirical scholars need normative theory to identify ‘success.’ They need practitioner innovations for analytically fruitful variation. Practitioners, for their part, need normative and empirical guidance to experiment and improve what can be done. Theorists need both practitioner advances and empirical analyses to probe analytically and build upon the implicit and evolving norms behind deliberative practice. Even more unusually, individual scholars who begin with one method increasing frequently take up the goals and tools of other methods in their quest for understanding and better practice. Why this synergy? Increasing demands for democratic legitimacy are driving practical innovation across the globe. Assessing the new deliberative forums that arise from these demands and the deliberative systems of which they are a part, practitioners, theorists and empirical scholars are asking both ‘What do we want to achieve?’ and ‘What produces -- or hinders -- what we want to achieve?’ The goals include greater epistemic creativity and accuracy, contributions to human development, and, most importantly, increases in perceived legitimacy backed by normative legitimacy, to undergird the many new laws and regulations (with the accompanying increases in government coercion) that human beings will require as we become increasingly interdependent.

Abstract:
"The operational image of the Public Service is received and noted with a compromised image. It is still plagued with negative attitudes in terms of service standards, particularly customer service and ‘Batho-Pele’ principles as displayed by School Administration Clerks. There are further notable challenges underpinned on a quest for a coherent transformed, transparent, efficient and accurate responsible service delivery to the necessities of all citizens. The latter ideals are pertinently elucidated by Public Service Vision thus saying: “A better life for all South African citizens by putting people first”. The “White Paper in the context of the Public Service, articulates the following eight essential pillars, namely: Consultation on service rendered; specification of service standards in respect of quality to be rendered; unrestricted access to service delivery; courteous treatment of clients with integrity; Openness and transparency of Departmental operations and redress on failed quality standard rendered as well as assurance on the value for money within the constraints of financial budgets ‘Batho-Pele’ is a Sesotho adage meaning “people first.” This is the ideal since 1997, a government initiative to transform public service delivery to citizens enshrined on the eight basic principles alluded. The study engages the qualitative research Free Attitude Interviews (FAI) dynamics to gather data on the need for an inviting collaborative service delivery; the key points in delivering quality service; the challenges in respect of service delivery; the environment conducive to a progressive quality service delivery as well success indicators to arm inviting service couched in the eight Batho-Pele public service principles. The study composed of administration clerks at both primary and secondary schools who are male or female in gender. The base for the discussion in this study is informed by the Critical Theory as a theoretical Framework adopted. To fortify our service excellence through Batho-Pele, critical elements on both Nigeria and Botswana service chatters have formed reference base to this research argument on matters of positive human treatment for service distinction. The study concludes with the fact attentive customer listening; show of human respect; personal integrity; quality service standards and swift response to customer grievances enhance the quest for Batho-Pele service excellence. The recommendation is that clerks in new public entrance ought to be inducted in this service ideal with further research undertaken for both relevance and sustainability."
