Abstract:
This book brings together eleven chapters on the musics of migrant and diaspora populations around the globe. Their authors are engaged with and sensitive to the nuances of struggles over identities and representations through musical expression, and they give account of some of the ways in which musicians, fans, promoters, and others use music and other media (including social media) to negotiate, transcend, or create solidarities with different normativities and nationalisms. How have diasporas transformed the musical expressions of their home countries as well as those in the host communities? How do musical performances provide a space for play in seeking to understand one’s identity? How do some communities recreate home away from home in musical performances, and how do some use music to critique and refine their senses of home? What are some of the ways in which musical performance can help reconstruct and redefine collective memory and a collective sense of place? With chapters by ethnomusicologists, sociologists, historians artists, and others, Scattered Musics is an interdisciplinary plunge into these questions.

Abstract:
Only since the 1970s have the variety of American musical styles and sounds have been allowed to stand on their own two feet in the academic world. Recent efforts to place American music-making within new or heretofore neglected contexts are diverse and inevitably shift our consciousness about music’s meaning and impact in culture. This volume contains a series of commentaries or glosses, chapters about American music broadly understood that seek especially to explore four critical factors beyond the the familiar categories defined by repertory or biography alone: the impact of performance; the role of patronage in the creation of musical objects and events; personal identity; and how larger cultural/ethnographic contexts (community values, ethnic markers, and social relations) determine certain musical results. A related concern in many of the chapters is the way music is disseminated within listening communities—how it was made “popular”—and how it continues to exert a lasting influence across the rest of the globe. The topics to be found here are wide ranging and include many genres and perspectives (hymnody, concert music, jazz, country music, hip-hop, Tin Pan Alley, and Broadway song and dance, among other types), but each chapter is focused on specific performers, patrons, works, conditions, or institutions within its cultural context.

Abstract:
Musical theater dance is an ever-changing and evolving dance form, egalitarian in its embrace of any and all dance genres. It is a living, transforming art developed by exceptional dance artists requiring dramaturgical understanding; character analysis; knowledge of history, art, design; and, most importantly, an extensive knowledge of dance, both intellectual and embodied. Its ghettoization within criticism and scholarship as a throw-away dance form, undeserving of analysis—derivative, cliché ridden, titillating and predictable, the ugly stepsister of both theater and dance—belies and ignores the historic role it has had in musicals as an expressive form equal to book, music, and lyric. The standard adage, “when you can’t speak anymore sing, when you can’t sing anymore dance,” expresses its importance in musical theater as the ultimate form of heightened emotional, visceral, and intellectual expression. Through in-depth analysis author Liza Gennaro examines Broadway choreography through the lens of dance studies, script analysis, movement research, and dramaturgical inquiry offering a close examination of a dance form that has heretofore received only the most superficial interrogation. This book reveals the choreographic systems of some of Broadway’s most influential dance-makers, including George Balanchine, Agnes de Mille, Jerome Robbins, Katherine Dunham, Bob Fosse, Donald McKayle, Savion Glover, Sergio Trujillo, Steven Hoggett, and Camille Brown. Making Broadway Dance is essential reading for theater and dance scholars, students, practitioners, and Broadway fans.

Abstract:
Music education takes place in many contexts, both formal and informal. Be it in a school or music studio, while making music with friends or family, or even while travelling in a car, walking through a shopping mall or watching television, our myriad sonic experiences accumulate from the earliest months of life to foster our facility for making sense of the sound worlds in which we live. The Oxford Handbook of Music Education, which comprises of two volumes, offers an overview of the many facets of musical experience, behavior, and development in relation to this diverse variety of contexts. In this first volume, articles discuss a range of key issues and concepts associated with music learning and teaching. The volume then focuses on these processes as they take place during childhood, from infancy through adolescence and primarily in the school-age years. Exploring how children across the globe learn and make music, and the skills and attributes gained when they do so, these articles examine the means through which music educators can best meet young people's musical needs. The second volume of the set brings the exploration beyond the classroom and into later life. Whether they are used individually or in tandem, the two volumes of this text update and redefine the discipline, and show how individuals across the world learn, enjoy, and share the power and uniqueness of music.

Abstract:
Abstract Music, Communities, Sustainability traces the genesis of the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) and its impact on music practices across the globe at a time when diversity and vitality are often at risk. Social, cultural, and technological changes—as well as intolerance, displacement, and ecological threats—challenge the resilience of many communities and their music. With insights from emerging and established scholars involved with UNESCO programs in various ways, this volume documents the rise in awareness that approaching music as ICH has brought. In three parts, it traces the rationale and development of the Convention, explores its effects on the ground in various cultural settings, and identifies gaps in its implementation. In doing so, this volume provides essential background for scholars and other professionals involved with music and cultural sustainability by describing the largest global effort to support musical diversity to date, critiquing discrepancies between ideologies and realities, and offering perspectives for more effective policies and practices.

Abstract:
Music in World War I played an important role in cementing the transatlantic alliance among Anglophone and Francophone allies. Chapters 1–5 consider responses to the war by five individuals from three countries: Frank Bridge, Charles Ives, Claude Debussy, John Philip Sousa, and Irving Berlin. Chapters 6–10 gradually expand the focus to ever larger groups of people: women theatre organists in the United States, the Longleat community in England, the greater citizenry of Canada, the service flag and Gold Star mother movements throughout the United States, and the global population devastated by the influenza epidemic. A “prelude,” “interlude,” and “postlude,” which provide context and supplemental material, are co-authored by the three editors, who speak as representatives of England, Canada, and the United States. The whole demonstrates not only the importance of musical exchanges and influences in shaping transatlantic support for the war effort but also the range of contributions made—from unknown amateurs to major composers, from local communities to international populations, and from regions that span a third of the globe.

Abstract:
This chapter details Mancini's continued musical evolution and his break with Blake Edwards. In was in the 1970s, as Mancini was juggling concert work, pop recordings, and his truer ambition to move on to more narrative movie scoring, that a personal dilemma cropped up to complicate things even more: a rift between him and the chief proponent of his initial success, Blake Edwards—or, rather, between Blake Edwards and the rest of the world. In just a few months' time, Edwards would break all ties with Mancini, renounce Hollywood altogether, and move to the other side of the globe, leaving Mancini a free agent on all fronts, unsure where his next film opportunities might be found and facing the unknown.

Abstract:
Approaches to incarceration and community music vary widely. This chapter examines music-making in US and UK prison contexts, suggesting new insights into the values, applications, and meanings of community music. Contrasting approaches towards imprisonment exist not only across the globe, but also within particular countries. In the United States, a wide range of practices within the contexts of imprisonment occur, such as differences in incarceration rates between whites and people of color, sentence lengths, use of capital punishment, voting rights, and quality of legal representation. Inmates’ opportunities for self-expression are restricted. Research and practice in music-making in prisons suggest that community music approaches within prisons provide a means towards desistance, improved self-esteem, social support and a sense of accomplishment. Music-making within the complex power dynamics of prison contexts emphasizes the importance of the welcome and hospitality within our understanding of community music.

Abstract:
A documented history of almost fifty years and a growing internationalization and interculturalisation of community music invites a revisiting of some of the field’s approaches, ideologies, and contexts. This chapter critically reflects on historical developments and current realities of how the field is conceptualized around the globe. It also touches on the role of community music facilitators in bringing about social change and outlines some of the key skills, working methods, values and ethics that are commonly associated with work in this field. It provides a snapshot of what has become a truly global phenomenon, and critically discusses the recurring question of whether community music needs a new defitinion or (re)definition in the twenty-first century.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the London Symphony Orchestra’s creation and development of the pioneering orchestra-owned label LSO Live as a response to a classical music industry in crisis. The investigation of the label’s business model is framed within a production of culture perspective that considers six categories: industry structure, organizational structure, occupational careers, law and regulation, technology, and market. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and industry data, this chapter demonstrates how the London Symphony Orchestra increased its artistic and managerial independence and, in doing so, effectively multiplied its local and international reputation. As an example of forward-looking managerial culture and leadership, the LSO Live initiative continues to be imitated around the globe.

This book focuses on the relation between citizenship education and cultural education. It provides answers to the question of where the line between citizenship and cultural education is to be drawn—and if there is any at all. The issue of which approaches to cultural education can be productive for citizenship education is also raised. The articles the book contains introduce the chances offered by and limits to citizenship and cultural education as well as concrete approaches to identifying a link between them. This includes citizenship education through literature, theatre, music, fashion, computer games, etc. With contributions byFrederik Achatz, Michele Barricelli, Santina Battaglia, Helle Becker, Anja Besand, Sabine Dengel, Werner Friedrichs, Markus Gloe, Annegret Jansen, Ingo Juchler, Paul Mecheril,Tonio Oeftering, Sebastian Puhl, Sven Rößler, David Salomon.

Abstract:
‘To be loved to madness - such was her great desire’ Eustacia Vye criss-crosses the wild Egdon Heath, eager to experience life to the full in her quest for 'music, poetry, passion, war'. She marries Clym Yeobright, native of the heath, but his idealism frustrates her romantic ambitions and her discontent draws others into a tangled web of deceit and unhappiness. Early readers responded to Hardy's 'insatiably observant' descriptions of the heath, a setting that for D. H. Lawrence provided the 'real stuff of tragedy'. For modern readers, the tension between the mythic setting of the heath and the modernity of the characters challenges our freedom to shape the world as we wish; like Eustacia, we may not always be able to live our dreams. This edition has a critically established text based on the manuscript and first edition. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe.
