Full textObservations from the Geostationary Meteorological Satellite and the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program comprised the physical data set. In parallel with this data collection activity, meteorological products from a numerical model were catalogued over the same time interval. The thesis presents comparisons of the satellite products and the model output over the study period. In part, motivated by the outcomes of this comparison, it was determined to investigate further prospects for using the array of satellite-derived products that might be more appropriate for use as a forecasting support tool. Finally, as an example, a prototype index is proposed which has potential to demonstrate the degree of development of a system. In this work, for want of a name, this index is termed the Hamilton Index (HI). It uses meteorological products derived from the microwave DMSP series of satellites and provides a temporal sequence of values of the index that are applied to monitor the developing of the TC systems in the three case studies. The meteorological variables used in the index were selected because they were accepted indicators of tropical cyclogenesis identified in the research literature. When applied to the three case studies, the HI showed a significant improvement in sensitivity to the state of development of the systems, especially when compared to the computer model data examined for the case studies.

Full textThis thesis investigates performing arts administration and management in the current economic and social environment in Vietnam and Australia within a context of globalisation. A comparative study of two major arts organisations in both Vietnam and Australia was carried out to investigate the following: why and how performing arts organisations are adapting to the changing environment; how arts leaders are adapting to changes; and whether arts managers need specific arts management training. The suitability of pertinent training packages and tertiary arts management courses from an Australian perspective are examined to determine whether these could be adapted for arts administration training in Vietnam. A qualitative case study approach was employed, using judgemental sampling. Two case studies were in Vietnam (the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra and the Hanoi Youth Theatre), and two in Australia (the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Melbourne Theatre Company). Some arts administrators involved with managing these performing arts organisations were interviewed in-depth, and relevant documents, regulations and policies in the arts field were also analysed to lay a foundation for comprehending the operation and management of performing arts organisations in both countries, at a time of change. Findings indicate that globalisation and particularly economic changes are major pressures that are pushing arts organisations to adapt. Furthermore, in the context of the knowledge economy, credentials have become increasingly important for arts leaders to obtain their positions, while in order to be successful in their positions, practical experience, innovation and an entrepreneurial mindset proved to be even more essential. It is suggested that some pertinent arts management training courses in Australia could, if adapted, contribute to enhancing arts management and the entertainment industry in Vietnam, as well as providing mutual benefit to both Vietnam and Australia.

Full texteducational approaches to restraint reduction are likely to have little immediate or sustained impact. With these understandings, we are hopefully better placed to change practice in a way that does not substitute one undesirable approach for another. If this is so, the value of this thesis will lie in its influence on practice as much as in its contribution to scholarship.

Full textThe main argument of this thesis is that history curatorship in Australia does not, as yet, possess a mature critical culture. While there is a growing literature in the academy about museums, there is surprisingly little material written by practising history curators. History curatorship, as such, lacks a tradition of critical writing about its professional practice. All too often curators move from one project to the next with little time to reflect on the way they work. While some curators have written about their work the impression emerges that history curators are still struggling to define what it is they do and how they do it. In this thesis I explore the relationship between theory and practice, or praxis, in relation to history curatorship. In most exhibitions curators seek to apply a theoretical framework to the subject matter they are working on. In some instances this is a self conscious process and in others it is implicit in their work. I will explore a series of case studies from projects I have completed at the NMA to explore this relationship in my own work. As such the thesis is designed to be an interrogation of my own professional practice. Reflecting on the work I have completed provides some valuable insights into the practice of history curatorship.

Abstract In the last few years, some people have unceasingly appealed to the Taiwan museums that museums must acknowledge their mission of public service and act swiftly act to comply with this mission. For example, several art museums directors agree that Taiwan’s public art museum must provide public services in order to fulfill their obligation to the general public – perhaps to the extent of taking on "art museum for the people" as their slogan. The idea of public service for art museums, their biggest resourse is their art collection that can be used for purposes of exhibition, education and also the most importance of research. Therefore, figuring out how utilize the collections to provide public service on these three fronts is the crux of the mission of the museums. This research according to the informations from internet. First, after taking three art musums form overseas that compress their service items, we find that can divide into three areas: Exhibition, Education, and Research. They also can break them down into eight areas of action. These eight areas are exhibition, tour guides, educational activities, curriculum studies, online studies, research laboratory access, educational resources, and online information. Second, via these eight areas of action that holding the Taiwan art museums at a certain standard. Last, comparing art museums from Taiwan and Overseas and binging Five key points in the public service items: 1) The target for public service is the general public. 2) use exhibitions to enhance the educational potential of the collection. 3) fully utilize the educational potential of the collection for public service. 4) make available research resources. 5) improve the capabilities of education via the internet. This research shows that public museums in Taiwan still aim at exhibitions, the diversification about collections in public service are inferior to overseas. Although some already increase service items, but do not show up in the internet. These all need to amend for the future. Keywords:collections,Public service,Art museum

Museums have always defined themselves as educational institutions, and endeavored to provide services for school teachers for the last decade. While museums have no doubt about their educational mission, and have been trying to build up partnerships with school teachers, the relationship between museums and school teachers has been slow to evolve. From 2003 summer to 2004 summer, as a project observer, I participated in an educational program for local elementary school teachers conducted by an art museum located in marginal area of northern Taipei County. Following, from 2004 summer to 2006 spring, I continued to observe the interactions among five teachers and the museum, and also conducted few deep interviews with five teachers. Combining collected documents related to the research site, the method was designed to understand the museum-school relationships in teachers’ view related to five specific issues: 1) how do teachers think about museums ; 2) how the prior experiences influent teachers in interacting with the museum; 3) how do teachers experience in the two-year program; 4) how do teachers feel and expect the relationships between museums and school teachers; and 5) how do teachers think the meaning of participating in museum programs. The result of this research revealed a dynamic pattern in teacher-museum interrelationship, and the mechanism involved subtle but crucial factors including personal, cultural and physical contexts of all the parties as a whole in the interacting setting. They would inspire some implications for genuine and rooted museum-school partnership.

The thesis takes National Taiwan Museum, National Museum of Natural Science, and Shihsanhang Museum of Archaeology, New Taipei City as study subjects, and use Habermas’s theory of the public sphere and Barrett’s theory of cultural public sphere as the thesis’s theoretical framework, adopting culturalhistorical perspectives to explore the evolution of the relationship between contemporary museums and the public. Also, probing how museums as being physical cultural public spaces to practice the notion of public sphere in which to facilitate the public to debate ,communicate and reflect on social issues. Besides, the research took MA’s “Museums Change Lives” project as reference cases to provide a new and broader horizon for Taiwan’s museums in expanding its publicness and to practice the conception of democratic by cooperating with different communities. Furthermore, according to the results of the research that leading the thesis’s central theory from Habermas’s mono- public sphere to multi- public sphere which means community sphere. And made the research reexamine the relationship between museums and the public which exposing the complex and contested politic relationship between different social communities. It is significant and helpful to realize the importance of respecting cultural diversity because it’s not only extended the notion of Habermas’s public sphere also established a more equal, inclusive and democratic mode of public sphere that contributive for museum to practice the mission of social inclusion. For the further understanding the notion of community sphere and relationship between communities and museums that research took eleven Taiwan’s national museums as case studies to explore whether and how Taiwan’s museum practice the notion of public sphere.
