Abstract:
One aim of this essay is to conduct a thorough investigation into the origins of the objects inthe Victoria Museum, Gustavianum, collection VM 346–362 (the sequence expanded, later inthe project, also to include VM 346) and how they got there. This will be achieved byfollowing the paper trail back to the excavation in Egypt. The other is to describe how objectsfrom digs were spread between museums and different countries by W.M. Flinders Petrie.Questions have been raised about the perceived origins of the objects in the Gustavianumcollection VM 346–362. The collection has until recently been believed to be the funeraryobjects of the First Intermediate Period man Wadjet-hetep. In 1921 this collection was mostlikely bought by the Victoria Museum through Pehr Lugn, from W.M. Flinders Petrie, somemonths after Petrie and Brunton ended their excavation season of 1920/21 in Sedment, Egypt.However, the collection as a whole cannot be the funerary objects of Wadjet-hetep, since themajority of those are owned by and exhibited at Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Denmark.The one confirmed belonging of Wadjet-hetep in the Gustavianum VM-collection is the innercoffin which has his name on it. The collective memory of the museum claims that fivewalking sticks, also currently in the VM-collection, were found with the mummy inside theinner coffin at the excavation site. Unfortunately, the museum archive is extensively damagedand contains nothing that can tell us about the collection's origins.By investigating external sources, Petrie and Brunton’s accounts of the excavation, as well asonline catalogues and archives, the VM collection can be backtracked to Sedment. The resultsconclude that the objects in the collection derive from different tombs and periods.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the settlement experience of the Bosnian Muslims in Victoria. Overall this research exploration takes places against background of the history of the immigration to Australia. The study covers migration patterns of Bosnian Muslims from post World War 2 periods to more recent settlement. The thesis provides contemporary insights on Bosnian Muslims living in a Western society such as Australia. The thesis excavates key issues about Islam and the Muslim communities in Western nations and argues that successful settlement is possible, as demonstrated by the Bosnian Muslim community. By adopting a socio-historical framework about settlement, the thesis reveals the significant, interconnected and complex aspects of the settlement process. Settlement of immigrants takes place within global, historical, economic, political, social and cultural elements of both the sending and receiving countries. Thus any study of settlement must examine theories and concepts on migration, settlement, religion, culture, integration and identity. The purpose for migration, the conditions under which migration takes place, the conditions of immigrant reception are fundamental in the context of Australia. Furthermore, Australia since the 1970s has adopted a policy of multiculturalism which has changed settlement experiences of immigrants. These elements are strongly analysed in the thesis both through a critical conceptual appraisal of the relevant issues such as migration, multiculturalism and immigration and through an empirical application to the Bosnian Muslim community. The theoretical element of the study is strongly supported by the empirical research related to settlement issues, integration and multiculturalism in Victoria. Through a socio-historical framework and using a ‘grounded theory’ methodological approach, field research was undertaken with Bosnian Muslim communities, Bosnian organizations and multicultural service providers. In addition, historical data was analysed by chronology. The data provided rich evidence of the Bosnian Muslims’ settlement process under the various governmental policies since World War 2. The study concluded that the Bosnian community has successfully integrated and adapted to the way of life in Australia. Different cohorts of Bosnian Muslims had different settlement patterns, problems and issues which many were able to overcome. The findings revealed the contributions that the Bosnian Muslim community has made to broader social life in Australia such as contribution to the establishment of multi-ethnic Muslim communities, the Bosnian Muslim community development and building social infrastructure. The study also concluded that coming from multicultural backgrounds, the Bosnian Muslims understood the value of cultural diversity and contributed to the development of Australian multiculturalism and social harmony. Overall conclusion of this research is that the different generations of Bosnian Muslims are well-integrated and operate well within Australian multiculturalism.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the history of the Manchester Art Museum (Manchester, England), which was founded by Thomas Coglan Horsfall (1841-1932) in 1886. It considers the museum’s permanent collections and its programming from 1886 to 1898 with brief notes on the later years of the institution. While, like previous work on the Manchester Art Museum, the thesis contextualizes the museum within Victorian arts and community institutions, it breaks new ground by highlighting the ways in which it diverged from these institutions. The analysis of the museum’s collections and programming emphasizes the contributions that Horsfall and the Art Museum Committee made to museum education through the museum’s circulating loan collections and school tours.

Abstract:

In 2009, the American Museum of Science and Energy (AMSE) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee debuted an updated history exhibit about the town’s role as one of three secret cities in the Manhattan Project. The exhibit presented a celebratory tone in honor of the innocent people who unknowingly and victoriously participated in the construction of the atomic bomb that aided the Allies in their successful end of WWII. The exhibit omitted the larger national, political nuclear discussion that took place over the following sixty-five years, cementing a long-held victory culture identity. In a 2009 world, the AMSE exhibit seemed incomplete, if not obtuse. Innocent Victors traces the history of AMAE/AMSE to examine the social, cultural, and political path that resulted in the 2009 and final AMSE exhibits. An analysis of public history commemoration trends, America’s twentieth century identity politics, and a chronicle of historical interpretation in Oak Ridge reveal a divergence in understood commemoration practices. Established public history theory suggests that the official and vernacular voices form a dichotomous relationship when interpreting the historical narrative. This thesis holds significant implications for examining the intersections between community and government perspectives on the historical narrative. This study also unearths specific theoretical and methodological barriers to interpreting the atomic bomb at public spaces in the United States. Moreover, Innocent Victors presents a commentary on the ongoing national discussion about the past, present, and future placement of the atomic bomb in American politics, ideology, and society.

Abstract:
Science and technology is regularly featured on radio, in newspapers, and on television, but most people only get firsthand exposure to ‘cutting-edge’ technologies in museums and other exhibitions. During this period, the Science Museum was the only permanent national presentation of science and technology. Thus, it is important to acknowledge the Museum’s history and the socio-political framework in which it operated. Understanding the delays in the Museum’s physical development is critical, as is understanding the gradual changes in the Museum’s educational provision, audience, and purpose. While the Museum was the main national exhibition space, the Festival of Britain in 1951 also provided a platform for the presentation of science and technology and was a statement of Britain’s place within the new post-War world. Specifically, within its narrative, the Festival addressed the relationship between the arts and the sciences and the influence of science and technology on daily life. Another example of the presentation of science was the quest for a planetarium in London - a story that involves the Science Museum, entrepreneurs, and Madame Tussauds. Comparing the Museum’s efforts with successful planetarium schemes isolates several of the Museum’s weaknesses - for example, the lack of consistent leadership and the lack of administrative and financial freedom - that are touched on throughout the work. Since most of this history is unknown, this work provides a fundamental basis for understanding the Museum’s current position, for making connections and comparisons that can apply to similar problems at other institutions, and for learning lessons from the struggles that can, in turn, be applied to other institutions.

Abstract:
In 2017 Finland celebrated its 100 years of independence. In honour of this event the City of Turku, Finland’s oldest city and former capital, decided to gift Finland a History Museum to commemorate the event. This project’s purpose is to propose a location, a program and a building for the museum. I have chosen a location in Turku Harbour across the street from Turku Castle, a fortress that has been on the site since 13th century. Today the Castle functions as a museum and is the city’s most popular museum with about 140 000 visitors annually. On the south end of the site there are four log warehouses belonging to the Castle from 1880’s as well as in the north end a 1930’s brick building that also functions as a warehouse. The Museums brings together not only the history of Finland and that of the City of Turku, but also the different buildings on the site. The new building is in the middle of the site, it brings together the surrounding buildings by parasiting itself to the existing buildings and in that way connecting them.

With my thesis work I question the evidence of history and how this evidence is read. I examine the theory of fractured history and alternate history, two examples of how perception of the past is completely altered when the science of reality is merged with imagination and mystery. As a vehicle for this examination, I use my own family history, something I am familiar with on many levels but also completely foreign to. As a curator of the story of my own history, I ask, "How can we know what is real?" and "If I say it is real, does that make it so?"

Abstract:
The Victorians saw more portraits than any generation before them. While the eighteenth century has been named 'the age of portraiture', portraits pervaded nineteenth-century society like never before. With the invention of photography, coupled with technological advancements in low-cost printing methods, the medium in which faces could be recorded was revolutionised, the classes of society that could afford to be immortalised expanded, and the spaces in which portraits were seen proliferated. These spaces included the public gallery, photography studio shop windows, and personal photograph albums. They also included the art periodical, biography, fiction, and poetry as the experience of portraiture became distinctly textual as well as visual. This thesis draws upon art history alongside literary, museum, and material studies to explore the creative exchange that developed between portrait viewership and reading practices in the mid- to late nineteenth century. Taking the establishment of the National Portrait Gallery in 1856 as its starting point, the thesis tracks the changing idea of the portrait gallery through its literary reception. It takes the portrait gallery to mean the physical space in which portraits were exhibited, and the conceptual idea of collecting, arranging, and interacting with portraits that permeated into the literary world. By focussing on the work of Edmund Gosse, Walter Pater, Thomas Hardy, and Vernon Lee, the thesis forms a 'gallery' of nineteenth-century tastemakers, each of whom looked to the democratic art of portraiture to reflect upon their literary art. How did portraits and texts interact in the mid- to late nineteenth century? In what ways did writers adapt the conventions of portraiture and the portrait gallery for the written text? This thesis seeks to answer these questions and provide new narratives about the complex relationship between the visual and the verbal in nineteenth-century culture. It observes the Victorian 'culture of art' with a more focussed eye to illuminate how the conditions of viewing, circulating, and collecting portraits specific to the period allowed the portrait gallery to serve as a particularly compelling arena for the literary imagination. Gosse, Pater, Hardy, and Lee tested the inherent limitations of portraiture as an art of imitation to realise its imaginative capacity for communicating with close and distant, contemporary and historic figures. They recognised that writing offered a valuable way of constructing the affective conversations that could be had with - and the stories that could be told about - portraits and portrait collections. With the proliferation of portraits came the problem and the opportunity of organising them.

The Whitney Museum of American Art founded in 1931 by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney offers insight into the role of women patrons in the American art world. Furthermore, the Museumâs contemporary identification with the Museum of Modern Art obscures its unique history and different founding principles. This paper explores the foundation of the Whitney Museum in roughly the first two decades of its existence from 1931 to 1953 to examine how Whitney and the Museumâs first director, Juliana Force, negotiated gender and class ideology and the Modernist discourse to found the first museum solely devoted to American art. Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney and Juliana Force operated the Whitney Museum based on three main principles: the primacy of the individual artist, the promotion of American art, and the importance of an informal museum space. The Whitney Museum of American Art, staked Whitney and Forceâs claim in a male dominated art world. The Museum was a complex space, representing a modern feminine viewpoint that embraced inclusivity and elitism, masculine and feminine, Modernism and conservatism. Whitney and Force wanted the Whitney Museum to be less formal and more inclusive, so they designed it like a middle class home with intimate galleries, furniture, carpets, and curtains. However, the decor hindered the Whitney Museumâs influence on the modern art canon because critics perceived the Museum as feminine and personal, Modernismâs rejection of the feminine and realism that ultimately led to the exclusion of the Whitney Museumâs collection of realist art from the modern art historical canon.

Lincoln County, Arkansas, is a small county in the southeastern sector of Arkansas that lacks a museum dedicated to its history. With Lincoln County lacking the funds to purchase/build a physical space that is on-par with current museum standards, a museum building is an impossibility at this point. Yet, the older generations that are full of knowledge about the history of the county are fading away. To preserve past and future history, a new spin on a museum had to be accomplished. The spin was creating a digital museum. This study goes in-depth on the creation of a digital database and museum for Lincoln County using Omeka.net and WordPress.com according to Dublin Core and museum standards. The websites showcase a broad and general history of Lincoln County that will hopefully become a foundation for the creation of a physical museum.

Abstract:
Architecture has always been about connection since its primary purpose of building a shelter for humans. Among many other things, it provides connections between people, and connections between people and the natural and built environment. The design and building process is about connection as well. We design in the present, relying on the past to build in the future. In this context, time is the strongest connection that is present in most of the built environment around us. I consider museums to be a good building type that connects people with objects and materials of historical, religious, and cultural importance through preservation and presentation for the public. Since a very young age, I used to admire the buildings while walking the streets of Casablanca, where I was born. A city that is a combination of traditional Islamic influenced design and the European style of construction brought by the colonizers. My goal in this thesis is to explore, in an architectural setting, connecting the old city to the new city, and present this story to the general public.

By the 1920s, ideas about the function and appearance of the American art museum were shifting such that they no longer were perceived to be merely storehouses of art. Rather, they were meant to fill a present democratic need of reaching out to the public and actively helping to cultivate the tastes and knowledge of a desired culturally literate citizen. As a result of debates about the museum's mission, audience, and design, in 1931 the Philadelphia Museum of Art opened the first branch museum in the nation on 69th Street in the suburb of Upper Darby in an effort to improve the relationship between the museum and the community. With sponsorship by its parent institution and financing by the Carnegie Corporation of New York City, the two organizations hoped to determine, over a five-year period, whether branch museums, like branch libraries, would be equally successful and valuable in reaching out to the public, both physically and intellectually. The new Sixty-ninth Street Branch Museum was to serve as a valuable mechanism for civic education by encouraging citizens to think constructively about art and for the development of aesthetic satisfaction, but more importantly it was to be a catalyst for social change by integrating the visual arts into the daily life of the community. In this thesis I will demonstrate that, although the first branch museum was only open for a year and a half, it nonetheless succeeded in shaping the way people thought about art and how museums were meant to function as democratic institutions in American society.

Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the changing model of the local history museum in Ontario, Canada and the consequential changing interpretations of the past in these institutions.

Beginning in 1879, local history museums in Ontario developed largely from the energies of local historical societies bent on collecting the past. While science museums used taxonomy and classification to mirror the natural state of the world, history museums had no equivalent framework for organizing collections as real-world referents. Often organized without apparent design, by the early 20th century a deductive method was used to categorize and display history collections into functional groups based on manufacture and use.

By the mid-twentieth century an inductive approach for interpreting collections in exhibits was promoted to make these objects more meaningful and interesting to museum visitors, and to justify their collection. This approach relied on the recontextualization of the object through two methods: text-based, narrative exhibits; and verisimilitude, the recreation of the historical environment in which the artifact would have been originally used. These exhibit practices became part of the syllabus of history museum work as it professionalized during the mid-twentieth century, almost a full century after the science museum. In Ontario, recontextualizing artifacts eventually dominated the process of recreating the past at museums. Objects were consigned to placement within textual storylines in order to impart accurate meaning. At its most elaborate, artifacts were recontextualized into houses, and buildings into villages, wherein the public could fully immerse themselves in a tableau of the past. Throughout this process, the dynamic of recontextualization to enhance visitor experience subtlety shifted the historical artifact from its previous position in the museum as an autonomous relic of the past, to one subordinate to context.

Although presented as absolute, the narratives and reconstructions formed by these collecting and exhibiting practices were contingent on a multitude of shifting factors, such as accepted museum practice, physical, economic and human resources available to the museum operation, and prevailing beliefs about the past and community identity. This thesis exposes the wider field of museum practice in Ontario community history museums over a century while the case study of Doon Pioneer Village shows in detail the conditional qualities of historical reconstruction in museum exhibits and historical restoration.

The Shakespeare Press Museum, a working letterpress museum at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, houses letterpress printing presses and equipment dating from the 1850s to the 1970s. Although the museum has been at Cal Poly since the 1960s, little work was completed on the historical context of the collections or to address the archival and educational frameworks of the museum’s collection. This thesis has three purposes: to place the museum’s collections in their nineteenth-century California historical context; to provide the first in-depth examination of the museum’s original founder, Charles “Shakespeare” Palmer; and to create an archival reference and program for the museum’s collections in their physical and digital form.

This dissertation originated from an interest in museum architecture and the desire to improve museum experiences for the inhabitants of Pretoria. The city is in need of a museum that does not distinguish between different cultures and backgrounds, and that provides an experience that a regular city user can relate to. This dissertation aims to address this need with the creation of a museum that relies on a chance museum encounter in an everyday place. This museum encounter will enrich people’s daily city experiences and provide opportunity for self-reflection and contemplation. The dissertation proposes a new satellite museum for the existing Ditsong: National Museum of Cultural History as a method of exposing the public to this museum. This satellite museum will function as a branch of the larger museum. The aim of this satellite museum is to provide regular users of the city with an unexpected museum experience. This dissertation considers what a contemporary museum in the inner city of Pretoria should be in terms of function and architectural implementation. The document investigates contemporary trends in museum architecture and evaluates existing museums in Pretoria. It also includes an investigation into culture in South Africa and into the relation of the satellite museum to its context. The study concludes that a contemporary museum experience is one that facilitates continuous change, and provides a spatial experience that blurs the threshold between the new museum and existing public space.

This researcher has explored the vault of the National Museum of History (NMH) into a collection of 187 pieces of exhibited posters displayed between a range period of 1996 and 2002. She then, after photocopying, rearranging, and documenting the files, categorizes them, by K. J. (Kawakita Jiro) method, into six groups, namely, of painting, housewares, photography, architecture & sculpture, extended education, and floristry. She also classifies and explains them by graphics, wishfully, for the reference of later studies. All through the chapters, the researcher, with the aid of literature reviews or of the interviews with former poster designers of the NMH and with contemporary vision communications professionals, comes to realize the impacts those old poster-related designing skills, procedures, circumstances, and shifting times had on the processes, elements, and styles of poster designing. And she also hopes, by analyzing the old posters of the NMH, the viewers will be able to develop some applicable and characteristic personal styles for poster designing. Furthermore, through the use of questionnaires and cross analysis, she hopes, they will also be able to understand the extent to which the NMH posters and the populace have been interrelated with one another. Then, the result of this study reveals that the NMH visitors have been mostly females, the majority of whom comes from the school, the military, and the public sector, which also includes the veterans. Judging by their motivations, it shows that the “personal interests” category tops the rank of the investigation on the whole, with the “relaxation & amusement” category running up, and which means a visit of the NMH has gradually become one of the options the general public will take as a way of both relaxing and amusing themselves. On the other hand, it also turns out that the percentage of the NMH visitors receiving the information about the NMH exhibitions through the posters runs the highest, which reaffirms the significance of posters as a way of informing the general public of the exhibitions. At the same time, with its increasing popularity and convenience, the Internet has caught up with other media in terms of the effective and efficient advertisements. Additionally, when asked how they feel greatly impressed with the NMH posters, the interviewees pick up the “clear & accurate literacy”, the “attractive illustration”, or the “radiant coloring” categories, etc. as their responses, and that signifies plain and simple style of diction with clear and forceful messages is prerequisite with a successful poster. Finally, this study also explores the marketing strategies which most the museums have recently employed to cope with the trendy needs for their individual future developments, and through which they hope to achieve their goals of effective and efficient advertising communicatively with appealing content of clearer and more accurate literacy. Accordingly, this study suggests as follows: (1) the establishing of an institutional image: Poster designers, besides spreading the information about the museum exhibitions to the public, also work on the establishing of an ”image” for the museums, thus creating a sense of the public ”loyalty” to their particular favorite museums. This is because any institution, striving to acquire an outstanding position among numerous both public and private historical or art museums, has first to own a personality. To achieve this, it has to seek an identity, without which the institution is in no position to advertise itself. (2) the enhancing of a functional poster: Poster designers, faced with the problem of the disposable quality of a poster, integrate such functions as that of a calendar and that of a poster into one, thus enhancing the functions of their design and thereby the public interests in preserving it. By collecting such particular posters, the museum- goers will furthermore develop their sense of identity and unity with the museum. (3) the selecting of a hallmark: The NHM, acknowledging the limitations on the poster locales, negotiate with or rent a high-rise site in the neighborhood to encourage better advertising effect with stronger visual appeals, and also to establish a new hallmark to guide the museum-goers to their ultimate goal. By doing this, the NHM better informs and reminds those pilgrims of its exhibitions for the primary purpose, and, in the meantime, initiates and nurtures the potential art lovers with multiple visual enjoyments. And (4) the improving of a storage facility: The NHM, when considering on its future expansion project, take the former posters into as much account as other artistic heritages and preserve them more securely and more systematically, as in the case of an X-type poster showcase which allows its contents with a more spacious storage and thus benefits the potential researchers with more sound and concrete references, and with the aid of which the contents enrich themselves with multiple information other than literary descriptions, to make the viewers recognize the historical legacy of the NHM exhibitions.

History is invented by nowadays people those are trying to reveal the past days’ wonders and mysteries. It’s the contemporary product and the remains of the past. It’s also the connection of the past and today. History is a knowledge system that carries lots of self-identifies and variety of values. It’s not only existed in the academic disciplines or in the scholar’s brain but also an invisible power that was born in the contemporary society and became the strength that made the society. My thesis is trying to discuss the landscape of history exhibition and the relationships with the notions of history itself. We will look through the case, History Gallery in the National Museum of Singapore, and try to discover the complexity between the museum history exhibition and the Historiography. When the two paths of the History Gallery, the Events Path and the Personal Path, catch visitors’ attentions, we have to rethink the possibilities of the paths brings. And we have to connect the guiding device, the Companion, and the “story-telling” narrative techniques into the concept of the representation of the history. I use diachronic historical timeline and synchronic cultural space to reconstruct the exhibition structure and I treat the story-telling narratives and the objects as the bricks and concrete to be the basic elements of the exhibition. All of these parts together and build a subjective view of the represented history and the agency to communicate and interact with the objective views outside of the museum or from the society and the authorities. That’s the reason and the purpose why I try to put the notions of history in museum exhibition being the important perspective of the historiography and History itself. The museums in Singapore and those in Taiwan are so different that I try not to jump to conclusion, but the notions of history in the History Gallery would be one of the best examples for the every museum cosmopolitan who’s within the historical identity confusion.

Especially because of the effect of 2-days weekend, people who are busy and tense in life have the opportunities to take easy and release the pressure. It also encourages the related cultural and leisure activities where museum visit is one of the choices. The purpose of this study is to explore the “Museum Marketing”. In the long time, we always think museum area is a charity and as they are non-profit organization. The museum often needs to be supported by government about their development and management. But now, we hope museums can finance by themselves. The collected data of analysis in this study comes from two kinds of sources: literature review and qualitative interviews with 10 people, including 2 people who work in the National Palace Museum and the National Museum of History, 2 volunteer who work there, and 6 people who visit there. This research that the author combine 4P marketing theory(Product, Price, Place, Promotion)with Performance and Policy into 6P research structure, the researcher hope to understand the opinion of interviewers about museum marketing strategy. This research concluded that there are many different parts between National Palace Museum and National Museum of History. The researcher still uses 6P to compare MPM with NMH to understand how to do better museum marketing strategy between them. And the researcher concludes some suggestion: 1.well thought out and fully maketing organization;2.Human resources development and training;3.Improving environment and facility; 4.Good exhibition design;5.Maketing strategical planning.

abstract: Since the initial impetus to collect, preserve, and interpret history with the intent of safeguarding American heritage for posterity, historical societies have made substantial contributions to the preservation of historical records. Historical societies have tended to originate in socially exclusive groups and found history museums, celebratory in nature. In contemporary society, this exclusivity raises issues and concerns for contemporary institutions seeking to "serve the public." Tempe History Museum, Chandler Museum, and Scottsdale Historical Museum are examples of local history museums, initially formed by historical societies, which are currently at different stages of developing exhibits and collections more representative of their diverse communities. The three museums have different approaches to not only defining their local community but also to what it means to serve and represent their city by being the local history museum. In recent years, the Tempe History Museum has undergone a renovation of its facility and exhibits, the Chandler Museum is in the midst of transferring its collection to the City of Chandler and planning for a new facility, and the Scottsdale Historical Museum has remained largely the same since the early 1990s. The decisions made by the historical societies that found these museums have shaped and directed the museums' paths to becoming, or failing to become, relevant to their local communities. The Tempe, Chandler, and Scottsdale historical societies came from the Anglo-community within each city, so did the collections they acquired and the objects they displayed. At a time of rising social history, the historical societies presented socially exclusive museums. Becoming incorporated within the city government, would prove to be the point of change, the tipping point when the history museums moved from particularism to pluralism. The change, however, did not come overnight. It was change over time. The city governments had an obligation to equally represent its taxpayers and constituency, meaning that the newly incorporated museums had to eventually follow the same mission. In the case of Tempe, Chandler, and Scottsdale museums, incorporation within city governments has led to a stable funding source, professional staff, and a move towards representation of diverse communities within museum exhibits and programming.

Ecological Exhibition, referring to an exhibitionary method here, renders more complete and systematic ideas of exhibits by setting them in their original context or environment. In Taiwan, the practice of this method in museums is widely believed to be inaugurated by Peking Man Life Habitat, an exhibition initially organized by Pao Tsen-Peng, the first director of National Museum of History in 1976. The exhibition was not finished until the third director of the Museum; it has been popular since its opening and one of the most impressive exhibitions to audiences. This research is aimed at analyzing in what ways Peking Man Life Habitat are significant to ecological exhibition in museum practice in Taiwan firstly by reviewing the preparation, content, outcome and valuation of it. Secondly, the research goes through the international development of ecological exhibition so as to compare international cases with the case being studied by my research. Thirdly, in order to understand the application of ecological exhibition in Taiwan, earlier and later ecological exhibition cases in local museums are also examined. Based on the research steps above, my research comes to conclude that ecological exhibition, which has been frequently utilized by museums of the world, is an exhibitionary method of efficiency especially for exhibitions regarding histories. Peking Man Life Habitat, an exhibition applying ecological exhibition method, is not the first example of ecological exhibition as it has been long considered, yet due to its theme and success in educating, its organizer, Pao Tsen-Peng should be praised for his innovative idea to build the exhibition. With Peking Man Life Habitat serving as an early example for later exhibitions, National Museum of History continues to apply ecological exhibition method to themes concerning the local and therefore fulfils the original spirit of ecological exhibition.
