Abstract:
Abstract Generalized Munn rings exist extensively in the theory of rings. The aim of this note is to answer when a generalized Munn ring is primitive (semiprimitive, semiprime and prime, respectively). Sufficient and necessary conditions are obtained for a generalized Munn ring with a regular sandwich matrix to be primitive (semiprimitive, semiprime and prime, respectively). Also, we obtain sufficient and necessary conditions for a Munn ring over principal ideal domains to be prime (semiprime, respectively). Our results can be regarded as the generalizations of the famous result in the theory of rings that for a ring R R , R R is primitive (semiprimitive and semiprime, respectively) if and only if so is M n ( R ) {M}_{n}\left(R) . As applications of our results, we consider the primeness and the primitivity of generalized matrix rings and generalized path algebras. In particular, it is proved that a path algebra is a semiprime if and only if it is semiprimitive.

Abstract:
We describe irreducible representations and character formulas of the Renner monoids for reductive monoids, which generalize the Munn–Solomon representation theory of rook monoids to any Renner monoids. The type map and polytope associated with reductive monoids play a crucial role in our work. It turns out that the irreducible representations of certain parabolic subgroups of the Weyl groups determine the complete set of irreducible representations of the Renner monoids. An analogue of the Munn–Solomon formula for calculating the character of the Renner monoids, in terms of the characters of the parabolic subgroups, is shown.

In the present paper, we study the approximate biprojectivity and weak approximate biprojectivity of ℓ 1 -Munn Banach algebras when the related sandwich matrix is regular over Inv A . In fact, we show that a ℓ 1 -Munn Banach algebra with the regular sandwich matrix over Inv A is approximately biprojective (weak approximately biprojective) if and only if A is approximately biprojective (weak approximately biprojective), respectively. We also study approximate biprojectivity of upper triangular Banach algebra when the associated sandwich matrix with elements in Inv A is invertible. Finally, we apply our results to Rees semigroup algebras.

Abstract:
I argue that the internal evidence of the Republic supports a conjecture first advanced by the historian Mark Munn: Glaucon was an accomplice of the so-called Thirty Tyrants who most likely died at the side of his relatives Critias and Charmides in the Battle of Munychia. If Munn is right, the Republic must be read as a poignant philosophical drama, the tragedy of Socrates’ unsuccessful struggle to save Plato’s brother from the corrupting influence of his family and his city. This perspective raises important questions about the nature and limits of Socrates’ philosophical pedagogy, which must in turn be seen within the context of the dialogue’s symbolic and mythical representation of the cosmic moral drama of the soul.

Abstract:
Munn (2001), Citko (2005), and others argue that in ATB movement initial and non-initial gaps exhibit asymmetries in reconstruction effects and weak crossover: only the initial ATB gap shows reconstruction and weak crossover. Munn argues that these asymmetries are due to the nature of the gap: the initial ATB gap is a real gap, while non-initial gaps are parasitic gaps. Parasitic gaps are generally claimed to show no reconstruction or weak crossover (e.g., Nissenbaum 2000). We re-examine reconstruction in ATB movement and parasitic gap constructions and show that in most cases the putative asymmetries between gaps are not real, and when there is an asymmetry it is due to linear order and not to the nature of the gap. We conclude that both ATB movement and parasitic gap constructions involve full copies in all gaps.

American Librarian Ralph Munn's historic tour of Australian libraries in 1934 is well documented. Along with Ernest Pitt, Chief Librarian of the State Library of Victoria, he spent nearly ten weeks travelling from Sydney and back again, visiting libraries in all the state capitals and many regional towns throughout the country. Munn's trip was funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, which was then, through its Dominions fund, turning attention to philanthropic opportunities in the Antipodes. The resulting report, Australian Libraries: A Survey of Conditions and Suggestions for their Improvement (commonly referred to as the Munn–Pitt Report) is often credited with initiating the public library movement in Australia.

Abstract:
In this contribution we present our current findings in the calculations of the linear and second-order nonlinear electric susceptibility tensor components of organic crystals. The methodology used for this purpose is based on a combination of the electrostatic interaction scheme developed by Hurst and Munn (Hurst & Munn, 1986) with electronic structure calculations for the isolated molecules. Our modification of the method consists in i) running periodic boundary condition (PBC) calculations for an adequate chromophore geometry (either experimental or optimized) to obtain atomic charges and in ii) performing the calculations of the molecular properties within a non-uniform embedding field generated by point charges located spherically around the reference molecule. Using this approach good accuracy is achieved on the electric susceptibility tensor components in comparison with the uniform dipole electric field (Seidler et al., 2013). We extend here the application of this method to other molecular crystals as well as we present the first attempt to predict the chi(1) and chi(2) components of two-component organic crystals (Gryl et al., 2014).

Munn (1999) argues against ABS's account and proposes that first conjunct agreement in the Arabic dialects arises because coordination of NP subjects is semantically plural but syntactically singular. In this reply we show that Munn's alternative analysis is empirically inadequate.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In any extension theory for semigroups one must determine the basic building blocks and then discover how they fit together to create more complicated semigroups. For example, in group theory the basic building blocks are simple groups. In semigroup theory however there are several natural choices. One that has received considerable attention, particularly since the seminal work on inverse semigroups by Munn ([14, 15]), is the notion of a fundamental semigroup. A semigroup is called fundamental if it cannot be [shrunk] homomorphically without collapsing some of its idempotents (see below for a precise definition).

Abstract:
AbstractWe give an explicit description of the free objects in the quasivariety of adequate semigroups, as sets of labelled directed trees under a natural combinatorial multiplication. The morphisms of the free adequate semigroup onto the free ample semigroup and into the free inverse semigroup are realised by a combinatorial ‘folding’ operation which transforms our trees into Munn trees. We use these results to show that free adequate semigroups and monoids are 𝒥-trivial and never finitely generated as semigroups, and that those which are finitely generated as (2,1,1)-algebras have decidable word problem.

Abstract:
<p>The ideas of transversals are important to study algebraic structures which are useful for investigating semirings structure. In this paper, we introduce and explore split additively orthodox semirings which are special semirings with transversals. After obtaining some property theorems of split additively orthodox semirings, the structure theorem for them is obtained by using idempotent semirings, additively inverse semirings, and Munn semigroup. It not only extends and strengthens the corresponding results of Clifford semirings and split orthodox semigroups but also develops a new way to study semirings.</p>

Abstract:
In some Arabic dialects, preverbal coordinated subjects cause plural agreement on the verb while postverbal ones cause either plural agreement or singular agreement. This paradigm has been addressed by Aoun, Benmamoun, and Sportiche ( 1994 , 1999 ) and Munn (1999) , with varying degrees of success. This article offers an alternative to the previous analyses that utilizes the concept of decomposed Merge ( Hornstein 2009 ), whereby Merge is reanalyzed as two suboperations. Previously unexplained cases that flout the paradigm are explained here by a decomposition of the Extension Condition ( Chomsky 1995 ) and a derivational account of pronoun binding across coordination.
