Abstract:
The planetarium was invented by the German engineer Walther Bauersfeld of the Carl Zeiss Company in 1919, and the first projection-planetarium in the world was installed in the Deutsches Museum in München (Munich) 1923. Most of the German planetariums were destroyed during World War II. Today, nine major planetariums with dome diameters greater than 15m are in operation in the following cities in F.R. Germany; the numbers in brackets are the year of opening, the dome size and the seating capacity: West Berlin (1965; 20 m; 320), Bochum (1964; 20 m; 300), Hamburg (1933; 20.6 m; 270), Mannheim (1984; 20 m; 287), München (1925; 15 m; 156), Münster (1981; 20 m; 280), Nürnberg (1961; 18 m; 255), Stuttgart (1977; 20 m; 277), and Wolfsburg (1983; 15 m; 148).

Abstract:
Collecting expeditions to China's Sichuan, Gansu and Qinghai provinces were conducted by the third author, along with Alessandro and Irene Floriani, during June 2009, April 2010 and July 2010. Light trapping yielded numerous noctuid moths including four new species, described herein. These new taxa reflect the high diversity of some genera (Hada, Billberg, 1820 ; Palaeamathes, Boursin, 1954) in SW China, and the biogeographical connections of the Tibetan Plateau to Central Asia (Lacanobia kitokia sp. n., L. contrastata (Bryk, 1942), L. mongolica Behounek, 1993, L. kirghisa Gyulai & Ronkay, 1998) and to the Himalayan Region (Palaeamathes serrulata sp. n. is close to P. harpegnoma (Hreblay & Ronkay, 1998). Abstract:
Despite the possibility to watch the Olympic Games on TV, millions of people want to attend the Games live on site. Experience shows that this desire increases when the Games are held within the vicinity of where you reside. This was also the case in 1972 in Munich. However, the inner German division led to a particular situation: People in the German Democratic Republic (Deutsche Demokratische Republik, DDR) often only lived a few hundred kilometres from the venue of the Games. They spoke the language of the hosts, and many loved sports. The hosts repeatedly indicated how welcome the guests were, particularly those from the “other Germany”. Yet, here was a substantial political issue: Germany had been separated since 1949, and the division was cemented in 1961. The GDR citizens were hardly able to enter the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesrepublik Deutschland, BRD). The GDR’s ruling party (Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands, SED) opted for dissociation, which means that, according to their doctrine, there should be “no special relationships”. – Since the beginning of the New Eastern Policy (Neue Ostpolitik) in Bonn, the relationships should not be inferior either. Thus, the GDR was, so to speak, compelled to send tourists to the Munich Games, although the GDR leaders enormously struggled with that decision. The study describes the process leading to two groups of 1,000 GDR citizens being hand-picked and representing their state at the Games. Furthermore, it depicts the misunderstandings between the two sides during the negotiations and how the delegation was prepared and monitored. It also describes the objectives of both sides connected to the sending and receiving of the visitors. In all of that, including the haggling over a few dozen tickets for a volleyball match, it becomes apparent that not only the Olympic competitions can be of extreme political importance but also Olympic tourism.

Abstract:
Max Witzemann had been sentenced to a prison term for counterfeiting in 1982. According to that nonappealable decision, he had imported counterfeit U.S. dollar notes into Germany in 1981. On the basis of the decision, the Hauptzollamt sought to collect customs duties and turnover taxes on the import of the forged notes. Witzemann refused to pay, pleading that the collection of customs duties and import turnover taxes violated Articles 9 and 12-29 of the EEC Treaty, which concern the customs union.

Abstract:
In summer 2001, an outbreak of Salmonella München occurred in Germany. We conducted descriptive epidemiology and hypothesis-generating interviews among case patients, two retrospective cohort studies, and a case-control study of subout-breaks. We performed pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) from selected patient isolates and a limited trace-back investigation for analytical purposes. Four states were consecutively affected: Saxonia (SX), Brandenburg (BB), Berlin (BE), and Baden-Württemberg (BW). Although hypothesis-generating interviews failed to identify a plausible food item, descriptive data and investigations of the suboutbreaks suggested pork meat as a probable source in three states (SX, BB, and BE) but not in BW. The PFGE profiles from isolates of case patients in the first three states were indistinguishable but differed from PFGE profiles of case patients in BW. Trace-back investigation suggested that contamination of pork meat occurred early in the rearing-production chain. This outbreak demonstrates how contamination early in the production process that can yield different end products may complicate multistate outbreaks. Investigation of suboutbreaks and use of the trace-back method as investigational tools may be useful adjuncts in solving the problem of multistate outbreaks.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Prostate cancer represents one of the most common malignant tumors in male patients in Germany. The pathological reporting of radical prostatectomy specimens following a structured process constitutes an excellent prototype for the introduction of software-based standardized structured reporting in pathology. This can lead to reports of higher quality and could create a fundamental improvement for future AI applications. A software-based reporting template was used to generate standardized structured pathological reports of radical prostatectomy specimens of patients treated at the University Hospital Klinikum rechts der Isar of Technische Universität München, Germany. Narrative reports (NR) and standardized structured reports (SSR) were analyzed with regard to completeness, and clinicians’ satisfaction with each report type was evaluated. SSR show considerably higher completeness than NR. A total of 10 categories out of 32 were significantly more complete in SSR than in NR (p < 0.05). Clinicians awarded overall high scores in NR and SSR reports. One rater acknowledged a significantly higher level of clarity and time saving when comparing SSR to NR. Our findings highlight that the standardized structured reporting of radical prostatectomy specimens, qualifying as level 5 reports, significantly increases objectively measured content quality and the level of completeness. The implementation of nationwide SSR in Germany, particularly in oncologic pathology, can serve pathologists, clinicians, and patients.

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic put academic institutions around the world in the difficult position of suddenly having to organize many lectures and examinations over online channels only, due to students’ physical access to their campus buildings being restricted. While the search for possible solutions to this problem was often challenging, this situation also offered the unique opportunity to establish remote examination options, that might hold the potential to be continued even after the pandemic has hopefully ended. This report looks at how the Munich University of Applied Sciences (MUAS), one of the biggest universities of applied sciences in Germany, established its own solution for remote examination over the Internet. This report provides an overview of how MUAS developed its on-site competence- and application-oriented digital examination tool to work remotely during the pandemic, its general framework and experiences that were made during its inception. Included are descriptions of the technical setting of the solution, as well as some challenges that were had when implementing it and how those were resolved. As part of this research it was concluded, that support and administrative work for this kind of remote examination was much more intensive than for on-site digital examinations, but also lessened each subsequent semester. A well-organized support system makes it possible to offer remote digital examinations with good conditions regarding, for example, student equal opportunities and secure examination environments, although even now perfect conditions cannot be guaranteed. While not without its own deficiencies, MUAS new established system was lauded by many Bavarian educational facilities and is in the process of being deployed to other Bavarian universities. This paper serves to highlight a qualitative example of how e-learning approaches can be of use in the context of higher education examinations and hopefully provide ideas for others trying to establish their own similar solutions.

Abstract:
Modern crystallography makes intense use of large scale facilities: neutron reactors, synchrotron sources, free electron lasers, where sources, optics and detectors allow for a wide range of possible experiments putting forwards the limits of the analysis of the structure and dynamics of matter and materials. Giving the large scale facilities a major role in the teaching of crystallography and material science, allowing for intense practice, requires to gather different skills which is more often done through summer school or intensive programs at PhD or junior scientist level. The Erasmus Mundus Master Course MaMaSELF (Master in Material Science Exploring Large Scale Facilities) is a unique European master program focused on the use of large scale facilities to investigate intimate nature of matter and materials where the five consortium higher education institutions (University of Rennes 1, France; Technische Universität München and Ludwig Maximilian University in München, Germany; University of Torino, Italy and University of Montpellier 2, France) have managed, together with Large Scale Facilities partners (ESRF, ILL, FRMII, DESY, LLB, SOLEIL, PSI) and third country partners spread out all over the world (Brazil, India, Japan, Russia, Switzerland , USA), to offer to the students a two years program at the master level including large amount of crystallography and spectroscopy teaching and an intensive summer-school totally dedicated to large scale facilities and including a large proportion of lessons and labs taught by experts, as well as many internship and master thesis opportunities at the large scale facilities.

Abstract:
AbstractSublingual haematoma is a rare complication of anticoagulants and can be life-threatening. As the number of prescribed anticoagulants is increasing, the incidence of complications of these drugs will continue to increase. A report of a sublingual haematoma in an elderly patient with chronic atrial fibrillation treated with edoxban (Lixiana ©, Daiichi Sankyo Europe GmbH, München, Germany) is reported. A 90-year male presented at the emergency department with an obstructed upper airway due to a sublingual haematoma. The patient received tranexamic acid, prothrombin complex, and fresh frozen plasma. After fiberoptic nasal intubation, the patient was monitored in the intensive care unit. After four days, the patient was extubated, and after six days, the swelling resolved completely. Complications of anticoagulants are rare but can be life-threatening. Recognition of an endangered airway and reversing the effects of the anticoagulant are essential. Surgical evacuation of the haematoma could be considered but is not necessary.

Abstract:
Contrast-enhanced computed tomography angiography is usually valuable for the evaluation of clipped cerebral aneurysm, but it has side effects of contrast medium. Time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) is a non-invasive and fast method. However, clip-induced artifact limits assessment of the artery in the vicinity of a clip. MRA with ultrashort echo time (TE) reduces metal artifact. We use MAGNETOM Aera 1.5T (SIEMENS, München, Germany) and perform pointwise encoding time reduction with radial acquisition (PETRA)-MRA using ultrashort TE for the assessment of the cerebral aneurysm after clipping. We, herein, presented two representative cases with a clipped aneurysm which could be evaluated by PETRA- MRA. Especially in one of them, the neck remnant was revealed by PETRA-MRA. PETRA-MRA can reduce the time and the invasiveness and may be helpful for the usual follow-up of the clipped aneurysm with the development of MRA technology in the future.

Abstract:
Calochortus fuscus Schultes (1829: 131) was described based on material collected by Wilhelm Friedrich von Karwinski in Mexico, who participated in two excursions in Mexico (1827–1832, 1841–1843). His collections were purchased by European institutions, especially by Botanische Staatssamlung München (M) in Munich, Germany. Calochortus fuscus is the only species of Calochortus section Cyclobothra Sweet (1828: t273) deposited at M. For his monograph, Ownbey (1940) had access to a photograph of the type of C. fuscus, but he confused this with C. spatulatus Watson (1879: 267) and described C. hintonii Bullock ex Ownbey (1940: 524) based on C. fuscus fresh material (McVaugh 1989). It is now well accepted that C. hintonii is a synonym of C. fuscus. The type locality of C. fuscus was not clarified in the description or the label attached to specimens. We tracked Karwinki’s excursions in Mexico and found out that he made a trip to Temascaltepec, State of Mexico, in September of 1827 (McVaugh 1972), which corresponds with the date on the type collection.

Abstract:
Beyond a certain loading threshold, glass-fiber-reinforced polymer composites with vinylester matrix can show considerably nonlinear deformation behavior due to damage of the matrix material. To model such nonlinear deformation properties, we follow the approach of a fully anisotropic damage model suggested by Govindjee et al. (Govindjee S, Kay GJ and Simo JC. Anisotropic modelling and numerical simulation of brittle damage in concrete. International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering 1995; 38(21): 3611–3633). In addition, the inter-fiber fracture criterion introduced by Puck (Puck A. Festigkeitsanalyse von Faser-Matrix-Laminaten: Modelle für die Praxis. München, Germany: Hanser Fachbuchverlag, 1996) is used for the damage function that defines the damage initiation and the material strength. A particular procedure is chosen to identify the material properties to validate the model: three glass-fiber-reinforced polymer laminates with different layups are tested in tension under different loading orientations, assuming laminate theory to be reasonably well fulfilled. Finally, further experiments are compared with corresponding simulation results to demonstrate the performance of the model.

SummaryFrom 1978 to 1989, 132 dogs and 51 cats underwent femoral head and neck ostectomy at the Department of Veterinary Surgery, Ludwig-Maximilians University, Munich, Germany. Clinical and radiographic re-evaluations were carried out an average of four years postoperatively in 81 (44%) of the animals, and gait analysis was also done in 17. The functional results were rated good in 38% of patients, satisfactory in 20%, and poor in 42%. However 96% of the owners were satisfied with the results. Kinetic and kinematic measurements showed that although femoral head and neck resection alleviated pain, it resulted in functional deficits in small as well as large breed dogs. These deficits were not visible during rapid movement. This article was originally published in 1997 in the journal Tierärztliche Praxis. Eur J Endocrinol 1996;134:639–48. ISSN 0804–4643 Isolated intact porcine thyroid follicles free of contaminating single cells were embedded in "Matrigel". which is a gel-forming basement membrane preparation containing mainly collagen type IV, laminin, heparan sulfate proteoglycans and entactin. Follicles were treated with different growth factors: thyrotropin (TSH), insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), epidermal growth factor (EGF) or transforming growth factor beta. Cell proliferation was quantified by counting cell numbers. Morphological studies were done by photodocumentation and analysis of histology by light and electron microscopy. The thyrocytes had the physiological polarity with follicular cell arrangement, microvilli at the apical membrane, desmosomes and tight junctions. The lumen contained colloid. Iodide organification (10.2 ± 2.1 vs 26.1 ± 5.8 pmol/106 cells; TSH 0.1 mU/ml) and release of thyroid hormones thyroxine, 1754 ± 207 vs 2890 ± 460 pg/106 cells; triiodothyronine. 164 ± 22 vs 412 ± 106 pg/106 cells; TSH, 1 mU/ml) were significantly stimulated by TSH. There was no basal growth rate in serum-free medium but proliferation was slightly stimulated with TSH (1 mU/ml;149 ± 19%) and in the same order of magnitude with IGF-I (10 ng/ml; 159 ± 23%) but without follicle neoformation. In contrast, EGF (1.0–5.0 ng/ml) induced thyrocyte proliferation dose dependently three- to sixfold. With EGF up to 2 ng/ml, buds of new follicles formed surrounding pre-existing follicles. With EGF higher than 3 ng/ml, typical papillary structures developed. Transforming growth factor beta inhibited this dedifferentiated growth. A migration of single cells into the gel was never observed. Thus, three-dimensional culture of isolated thyroid follicles in "Matrigel" provides a tool for investigating the regulation of follicular growth and neoformation close to the in vivo situation. ISSN 0804–4643 Growth hormone (GH) is used by athletes like bodybuilders to increase muscle strength and weight gain. On the other hand, chronic hypersecretion of GH in active acromegaly may result in outwardly hypertrophied but functionally weaker muscles. As a model for studying long-term effects of GH on muscle strength, we analysed transgenic mice (TM) carrying rat phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinasebovine GH (PEPCKbGH) fusion genes, which are expressed in liver and kidney but not in skeletal muscle. Circulating GH levels in TM ranged between 0.5 and 3 μg/ml, resulting in increased (p <0.001) body weight (wt) as well as increased (p <0.01) weights of forelimb and hindlimb muscles. However, muscle weight/body wt ratios of TM were 16–20% smaller than in controls (p<0.05), Forelimb grip strength of hemizygous TM (16 males, 132 ± 45 days old, body wt = 56.8 ± 8.3 g; 32 females, 146 ± 38 days old, body wt = 54.9 ± 6.1 g) and non-transgenic controls (28 males, 127 ± days old, body wt = 40.5±2.9 g; 33 females, 126 ±47 days old, body wt = 32.1 ± 3.6 g) was determined using an automated grip strength meter. Data were computed by analysis of variance, taking into account effects of group, sex and age. Least-squares means estimated for the grip strength (N) of male TM (1.91) and controls (1.92) were significantly (p<0.05) greater than those of female TM (1.78) and controls (1.61). A significant difference between groups was only seen in females (p <0.01). Least-squares means estimated for grip strength/body wt ratios (N/10 g) of male (0.34) and female TM (0.33) were 29% and 35% lower than those of male (0.48) and female controls (0.51), respectively (p <0.001). In summary, long-term elevated GH levels in TM increased muscle weight less efficiently than body weight, and muscle strength did not increase proportionally with muscle weight. Abstract:
Abstract The results of a validation of the European Space Agency’s (ESA) operational Medium-Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) cloud-top pressure (CTP) product by airborne lidar measurements are presented. MERIS, mounted on the polar-orbiting ESA Environmental Satellite (ENVISAT), provides radiance measurements within the oxygen A absorption band around 761 nm. The exploitation of these data allows the retrieval of CTP. The validation flights were performed in the northeastern part of Germany between April and June 2004 and were temporally and spatially synchronized with the ENVISAT overpasses. The Cessna 207T of the Freie Universität Berlin was equipped with the portable lidar system (POLIS) of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and a GPS navigation system. The maximum flying altitude was around 3000 m; therefore, the validation measurements were limited to situations with low-level clouds only. The validation was done by comparing MERIS data and lidar data. The statistical analysis of the observations revealed a high accuracy of the MERIS CTP product for low-level clouds, apart from a slight systematic overestimation of cloud-top heights. The root-mean-square error was 249 m, with a bias of +232 m. In the average top height level of ∼2000 m, these values are commensurate to pressure values of 24 hPa (rmse) and −22 hPa (bias). Furthermore, this validation campaign revealed deficiencies of the MERIS cloud mask to detect small-scale broken clouds.

Abstract:
Abstract: The Super League is a project competition thought of as an alternative to the present Champions League. In this regard, this new competition was designed to operate independently of FIFA and UEFA, which are the governing bodies of football worldwide and in Europe respectively, and would feature a semi-closed group of European teams (15 permanent and five selected based on their domestic results) from England, Spain and Italy (teams from France and Germany were also on the list but the selected clubs, PSG, Bayern München, and Borussia Dortmund declined the offer to join). This move made FIFA and UEFA condemn the proposed Super League, arguing against the ex-clusiveness of this closed league and considering a dangerous precedent that can be followed by other football clubs. The disagreement has escalated to legal actions and sanctions from FIFA and UEFA against the clubs that joined the Super League which, in turn, have started their own legal actions against the two international bodies. Even if the project seems to be abandoned, the situation is still ongoing and it’s difficult to predict the future of sport management after this bold move of several football clubs against the two governing bodies. The present article tries to analyze the situation using conflict analysis in order to find out future scenarios for all the actors involved. Eur J Endocrinol 1995;132:605–10. ISSN 0809–4643 Insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) has been shown to be released from thyrocytes in vitro. We investigated IGF-I mRNA expression during treatment with thyrotropin (TSH), forskolin and potassium iodide (KI) in intact porcine thyroid follicles ex vivo. Porcine thyroid follicles were prepared by collagenase digestion and cultured in the presence of TSH, forskolin or KI. After different incubation times, mRNA was isolated and examined by Northern hybridization with a porcine IGF-I cDNA probe of 405 bp in length. In untreated follicles no IGF-I mRNA was found, whereas in follicles stimulated with TSH an IGF-I mRNA of 7.0 kb was detected after 24 h, which persisted for another 24 h. Forskolin treatment mimicked the TSH effect, indicating that IGF-I mRNA expression may be stimulated by the adenylate cyclase pathway. Preincubation of the porcine follicles with KI decreased dose dependently the TSH-induced IGF-I mRNA expression, with complete inhibition at 10 μmol/l KI. These results suggest that TSH acts via the cAMP pathway to enhance IGF-I mRNA expression, which then may lead to an autocrine IGF-I stimulation. The IGF-I mRNA expression is under negative control of iodide. Roland Gärtner, Medizinische Klinik, Ludwig Maximilians University, Ziemssenstrasse 1, 80336 München, Germany

Abstract BACKGROUND Electrode placement in epilepsy surgery seeks to locate the sites of ictal onset and early propagation. An invasive diagnostic procedure, stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) is usually implemented with frame-based methods that can be especially problematic in young children. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the feasibility and accuracy of a new technique for frameless SEEG in children using the VarioGuide® system (Brainlab AG, München, Germany). METHODS A frameless stereotactic navigation system was used to implant depth electrodes with percutaneous drilling and bolt insertion in pediatric patients with medically refractory epilepsy. Data on general demographic information of electrode implantation, duration, number, and complications were retrospectively collected. To determine the placement accuracy of the VarioGuide® frameless system, the mean Euclidean distances were calculated by comparing the preoperatively planned trajectories with the final electrode position observed on postoperative computed tomography scans. RESULTS From May 2011 to December 2015, 15 patients (8 males, 7 females; mean age: 8 yr, range: 3-16 yr) underwent SEEG depth electrode implantation of a total of 111 electrodes. The mean error measured by the Euclidean distance from the center of the entry point to the intended entry point was 3.64 ± 1.78 mm (range: 0.58-7.59 mm) and the tip of the electrode to the intended target was 2.96 ± 1.49 mm (range: 0.58-7.82 mm). There were no significant complications. CONCLUSION Depth electrodes can be placed safely and accurately in children using the VarioGuide® frameless stereotactic navigation system.

Abstract:
AbstractMany soil, hydrologic and environmental applications require information about the unsaturated soil hydraulic properties. The evaporation method has long been used for estimating the drying branches of the soil hydraulic functions. An increasingly popular version of the evaporation method is the semi-automated HYPROP©measurement system (HMS) commercialized by Decagon Devices (Pullman, WA) and UMS AG (München, Germany). Several studies were previously carried out to test the HMS methodology by using the Richards equation and the van-Genuchten-Mualem (VG) or Kosugi-Mualem soil hydraulic functions to obtain synthetic data for use in the HMS analysis, and then to compare results against the original hydraulic properties. Using HYDRUS-1D, we carried out independent tests of the HYPROP system as applied to the VG functions for a broad range of soil textures. Our results closely agreed with previous findings. Accurate estimates were especially obtained for the soil water retention curve and its parameters, at least over the range of available retention measurements. We also successfully tested a dual-porosity soil, as well as an extremely coarse medium with a very high van Genuchtennvalue. The latter case gave excellent results for water retention, but failed for the hydraulic conductivity. In many cases, especially for soils with intermediate and highnvalues, an independent estimate of the saturated hydraulic conductivity should be obtained. Overall, the HMS methodology performed extremely well and as such constitutes a much-needed addition to current soil hydraulic measurement techniques.

Abstract:
The genus Scaphiophryne Boulenger comprises eight species of microhylid toadlets (Vences et al. 2003; Glos et al. 2005), all of which are endemic to Madagascar. They are characterized by a unique larval morphology, intermediate between Orton's (1953) types II and IV (Blommers-Schlösser 1975; Wassersug 1984). Recently, Grosjean et al. (2007) provided a comparative study of larval morphology of the genus, and found evidence for two morphological subgroups based on larval characters. Tadpoles remained unknown for only two species, Scaphiophryne boribory Vences, Raxworthy, Nussbaum & Glaw, and S. marmorata Boulenger. Three tadpoles of S. marmorata were collected by M. Vences, H. Kurrer and L. du Preez on 7 February 2006 close to Andasibe (18°56′S/48°25′E, 915 m a.s.l.), in a large temporary pond of about 15 m diameter and maximum water depth of 1 m, at the edge of rainforest. They were found syntopically with larvae of Paradoxophyla palmata and Boophis pauliani. Identity of one of these specimens (ZSM 554/2008) was verified by DNA barcoding; the sequence of a fragment of the 16S rRNA gene has the Genbank accession number EU717878 and was identical to a sequence of an adult specimen from the same locality (accession AY834191). Vouchers were deposited in the Zoologische Staatssammlung München, Germany (ZSM). We here provide a detailed description of these larvae, based mainly on one specimen at stage 39, ZSM 555/2008 (field number ZCMV 3602). Measurements were taken using a stereo microscope (Zeiss Stereo Discovery) using landmarks as in Grosjean et al. (2007).

Abstract:
Abstract Radioactive cerium and other lanthanides can be transported through the aquatic system into foodstuffs and then be incorporated by humans. Information on the uncertainty of reported dose coefficients for exposed members of the public is then needed for risk analysis. In this study, uncertainties of dose coefficients due to the ingestion of the radionuclides 141Ce and 144Ce were estimated. According to the schema of internal dose calculation, a general statistical method based on the propagation of uncertainty was developed. The method takes into account the uncertainties contributed by the biokinetic models and by the so-called S values. These S-values were derived by using Monte Carlo radiation transport simulations with five adult non-reference voxel computational phantoms that have been developed at Helmholtz Zentrum München, Germany. Random and Latin hypercube sampling techniques were applied to sample parameters of biokinetic models and S values. The uncertainty factors, expressed as the square root of the 97.5th and 2.5th percentile ratios, for organ equivalent dose coefficients of 141Ce were found to be in the range of 1.2–5.1 and for 144Ce in the range of 1.2–7.4. The uncertainty factor of the detriment-weighted dose coefficient for 141Ce is 2.5 and for 144Ce 3.9. It is concluded that a general statistical method for calculating the uncertainty of dose coefficients was developed and applied to the lanthanide cerium. The dose uncertainties obtained provide improved dose coefficients for radiation risk analysis of humans. Furthermore, these uncertainties can be used to identify those parameters most important in internal dose calculations by applying sensitivity analyses.

ISSN 0804–4643 Although the peptide hormone relaxin is synthesized by the human corpus luteum in vivo, its potential to serve as a local factor in the regulation of luteal function is not clear. Using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for human relaxin, we detected relaxin in the culture medium of human granulosa-lutein cells as early as after 6 days in culture. Moreover, 1 × 105 IU/l human chorionic gonadotropin stimulated relaxin release about fourfold during a 48-h incubation on culture days 6–8 (and 7–9), but not earlier (on days 1, 3 and 4). The stimulatory action of human chorionic gonadotropin on progesterone release was not influenced by relaxin, and relaxin alone was without stimulatory effect. However, human recombinant relaxin (between 0.1 and 12.5 μg/l) increased intracellular free Ca2+ basal levels to maximal peak levels exceeding 1000 nmol/l in about 64% of all tested cells (N = 168) with no obvious dependency on the culture day. The relaxin-induced Ca2+ signal was not affected by removal of extracellular Ca2+. As depletion of intracellular Ca2+ stores by ionomycin rendered the cells unresponsive to relaxin or diminished their ability to respond, these results point to an intracellular source of the Ca2+ signal. In summary, our data indicate the presence of a functional relaxin receptor on human granulosa-lutein cells, which is linked to Ca2+ release from intracellular stores. Abstract:
SummaryThis study evaluates whether immature platelets (IPF) determined in the post anesthesia care unit (PACU) can predict major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) or other thromboembolic events after intermediate and high-risk surgery. IPF are increased in patients with acute coronary syndrome and recently gained interest as novel biomarker for risk stratification. In this prospective observational trial 732 patients undergoing intermediate or high-risk non-cardiac surgery were enrolled (NCT02097602). IPF was measured preoperatively and postoperatively in the PACU. Primary outcome was a composite endpoint defined as MACE, deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism during hospital stay (modMACE). A cut off for IPF identifying a threshold between a low and high risk for modMACE was calculated by logrank optimization. A multivariate Cox regression was calculated in a forward stepwise manner to assess the relation between this IPF cut off and modMACE as well as other established risk factors (inclusion if p<0.05). Preoperatively, there were no differences in IPF between patients with and without modMACE (3.1% [2.2% – 4.7%](median [interquartile range]) vs. 2.8% [1.9% – 4.3%]. Patients with modMACE (28 of 730 patients; 3.8%) had higher IPF values in the PACU compared to patients without modMACE (3.6% [2.6–6%] vs. 2.9% [2–4.4%]; p=0.011). The optimal cut off of IPF > 5.4% was associated with an increased risk for modMACE after adjustment for covariates (hazard ratio: 2.528; 95% confidence interval: 1.156 to 5.528, p=0.02). In conclusion, IPF is an independent predictor of modMACE after surgery and might improve risk stratification of surgical patients.Institution where the work was performed and funded: Klinikum rechts der Isar der Technischen Universität München, Ismaningerstr. 22, 81675 Munich, Germany.

Abstract:
Abstract This study assessed 3 endodontic motors, X-Smart Plus (Dentsply Sirona, Ballaigues, Switzerland), VDW.Silver Reciproc (VDW GmbH, München, Germany) and, iRoot (Bassi Endodontics, Belo Horizonte, Brazil) in 2 different reciprocating settings. The movements evaluated were 170° in counter-clockwise (CCW) and 50° in clockwise (CW) at 350 RPM, and 150° CCW and 30° CW at 300 RPM. For the X-Smart Plus and VDW Silver the settings used were the ones in the motor library. For the iRoot, the motor was adjusted to the angles of the study. A customized optic target was attached to the contra-angle of the motor and the movements were recorded with a high-resolution camera (K2 DistaMaxTM Long-Distance Microscope System, Infinity Photo-Optical Company, Colorado, EUA) at 2,400 frames per second (FPS). The images were analyzed with the Vision Research software (Inc. Headquarters, Wayne, New Jersey, EUA). The following kinematic parameters were assessed: CCW angle, CW angle, speed (RPM) at both directions, and, standstill time at each change of directions. The Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) and Kruskal-Wallis (method of Dunn) were used at a significant level of 5%. There was no statistically significant difference among the motors at the 150°/30° setting (P > .05); the iRoot was the least reliable at the 170°/50° setting for CCW angle, speed, and net angle parameters (P < 0.05). The standstill time of all motors in both directions was identical. None of the motors were able to reproduce faithfully the set movements. The iRoot motor presented a higher discrepancy when compared to X-Smart and VDW Silver.

Abstract:
This paper reports on the performance of a recently developed neural network environment incorporating likelihood-based optimization and complexity reduction techniques in the analysis of breast cancer follow-up data with the goal of building up a clinical decision support system. The inputs to the neural network include classical factors such as grading, age, tumor size, estrogen and progesterone receptor measurements, as well as tumor biological markers such as PAI-1 and uPA. The network learns the structural relationship between these factors and the follow-up data. Examples of neural models for relapse-free survival are presented, which are based on data from 784 breast cancer patients who received their primary therapy at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Technische Universität München, Germany. The performance of the neural analysis as quantified by various indicators (likelihood, Kaplan-Meier curves, log-rank tests) was very high. For example, dividing the patients into two equally sized groups based on the neural score (i.e., cutoff = median score) leads to an estimated difference in relapse-free survival of 40% or better (80% vs. 40%) after 10 years in Kaplan-Meier analysis. Evidence for factor interactions as well as for time-varying impacts is presented. The neural network weights included in the models are significant at the 5% level. The use of neural network analysis and scoring in combination with strong tumor biological factors such as uPA and PAI-1 appears to result in a very effective risk group discrimination. Considerable additional comparison of data from different patient series will be required to establish the generalization capability more firmly. Nonetheless, the improvement of risk group discrimination represents an important step toward the use of neural networks for decision support in a clinical framework and in making the most of biological markers.
