Full text
Abstract:
Specifically designed to help candidates revise for the MRCS exam, this book features 350 Single Best Answer multiple choice questions, covering the whole syllabus. Containing everything candidates need to pass the MRCS Part A SBA section of the exam, it focuses intensively on the application of basic sciences (applied surgical anatomy, physiology, and pathology) to the management of surgical patients. The high level of detail included within the questions and their explanations allows effective self-assessment of knowledge and quick identification of key areas requiring further attention. Varying approaches to Single Best Answer multiple choice questions are used, giving effective exam practice and guidance through revision and exam technique. This includes clinical case questions, 'positively-worded' questions, requiring selection of the most appropriate of relatively correct answers; 'two-step' or 'double-jump' questions, requiring several cognitive steps to arrive at the correct answer; as well as 'factual recall' questions, prompting basic recall of facts.

McLean, Anthony, Stephen Huang, and Andrew Hilton, eds. Oxford Textbook of Advanced Critical Care Echocardiography. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198749288.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book is a physiological and evidence-based reference guide to the principles and techniques of advanced echocardiography. Both transoesophageal and transthoracic echocardiography are addressed, where appropriate. The foundations of advanced echocardiography are outlined in Part 1, preceding specific assessment methods of critical care echo which are demonstrated and discussed in Part 2. In reality, most critically ill patients do not suffer only one clinical problem, so Part 3 integrates techniques learned in Part 2 to answer both common and unexpected critical care questions. The future use of echocardiography in critical care is explored in Part 4. Important reference values for clinical use can be accessed easily in the appendices. An appendix includes videos, cases, and multiple-choice questions that can be used to reinforce understanding.

Muraru, Denisa, Ashraf M. Anwar, and Jae-Kwan Song. Heart valve disease: tricuspid valve disease. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198726012.003.0037.

Full text
Abstract:
The tricuspid valve is currently the subject of much interest from echocardiographers and surgeons. Functional tricuspid regurgitation is the most frequent aetiology of tricuspid valve pathology, is characterized by structurally normal leaflets, and is due to annular dilation and/or leaflet tethering. A primary cause of tricuspid regurgitation with/without stenosis can be identified only in a minority of cases. Echocardiography is the imaging modality of choice for assessing tricuspid valve diseases. It enables the cause to be identified, assesses the severity of valve dysfunction, monitors the right heart remodelling and haemodynamics, and helps decide the timing for surgery. The severity assessment requires the integration of multiple qualitative and quantitative parameters. The recent insights from three-dimensional echocardiography have greatly increased our understanding about the tricuspid valve and its peculiarities with respect to the mitral valve, showing promise to solve many of the current problems of conventional two-dimensional imaging. This chapter provides an overview of the current state-of-the-art assessment of tricuspid valve pathology by echocardiography, including the specific indications, strengths, and limitations of each method for diagnosis and therapeutic planning.

Abstract:
Neuroanesthesia: A Problem-Based Learning Approach provides a comprehensive review of the field of neuroanesthesia. Its format, inspired by the American Society of Anesthesiologists model of Problem-Based Learning Discussions, incorporates a pool of practical, ABA board-exam-style multiple choice questions for self-assessment. Each of its 29 case-based chapters start with a case description, usually a compilation of several actual cases; it then branches out through case-based questions to increasingly complex situations. The structure is designed to create an authentic experience that mirrors that of an oral board examination. The discussion sections that follow offer a comprehensive approach to the chapter’s subject matter, thus creating a modern, complete, and up-to-date review of the topic. This book is equally a solid reference compendium of neuronesthesia topics and a comprehensive review to assist the general anesthesiologist both in day-to-day practice and during preparation for certification exams.

Abstract:
‘Management of Sleep Disorders in Psychiatry’ provides an in-depth and evidence-based review of sleep-wake disorders included in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5) that are associated with a range of psychiatric disorders including mood, anxiety, psychotic, neurocognitive, eating, and substance use disorders. The book is unique in its focus on clinical assessment and management of sleep-wake disorders, and provides in-depth insight into the impact of disturbed sleep and wakefulness on clinical course and treatment outcomes of comorbid psychiatric conditions. Treatments reviewed include both evidence-based pharmacological and behavioral strategies to address sleep-wake disorders in patients with psychiatric disorders. Case vignettes are added to assist in the understanding of key clinical concepts of sleep and psychiatric comorbidity and multiple-choice questions are added for self-assessment. This comprehensive text aims to cater to the needs of the clinicians in a wide range of medical specialties including psychiatrists, sleep medicine physicians, psychologists, primary care physicians, and neurologists who strive to improve the sleep and clinical outcomes of their patients with psychiatric disorders.
