Igundunasse, Alex Terver. "Multiethnic prejudice in Northern Ireland." Thesis, Ulster University, 2011. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.543898.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: With the return to relative peace in Northern Ireland, available demographic data suggest that its population is growing in the sense of becoming increasingly diverse in line with the UK. However, there has been very little research on the social psychological implications of this growing diversity. One aspect of the implication of the growing diversity is prejudice. But past research had focused on Catholics and Protestants with little on the multiethnic dimension. In view of this gap, this research was directed at multiethnic prejudice in Northern Ireland. Aims: To understand the extent of multiethnic prejudice in Northern Ireland in view of the growing diversity. Research Design: The research broadly comprised four studies. The first, focused on a qualitative perspective with seven ethnic groups. It employed the simultaneous use of focus groups with sample sizes of 4-6 persons and Interpretative Phenomenological Analytical (IPA) approaches. The quantitative part had a total sample size of 417. In a cross-sectional design using a convenience sample method, Study two was an evaluation of intergroup relations based on Social Identity to understand its dimensionality in a multiethnic context. The third and fourth studies were focused on Blatant/Subtle Prejudice and Social Distance as measures of the prevalence of ethnic prejudice respectively. These studies also sought to understand their factor structures. Findings: The qualitative study uncovered feelings of dislike and mutual suspicion between ethnic groups. The study also showed that it is possible to simultaneously use Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis and focus in analysing data. The quantitative analysis which employed the use of SPSS and AMOS found a three factor structure for Social Identity in a multiethnic context. In addition, Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was applied due some of the limitation of factor analysis. There were significant differences between Catholics and Protestant on Social Identity and all the prejudice measures. There was also evidence of significant negative views between majority and minority groups in the country. Conclusion: The main implication of this research is that there is evidence of a broad divide between the ethnic groups involved in the research indicating a lack of integration. Further implications and areas for future research are suggested.

Kellier, Nicole. "The Epidemiology of Prostate Cancer Among Multiethnic Men." FIU Digital Commons, 2011. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/534.

Full text
Abstract:
The research goal was to document differences in the epidemiology of prostate cancer among multicultural men [non-Hispanic White (NHW), Hispanic (H), non-Hispanic Black (NHB)], and Black subgroups, particularly among NHB subgroups [US-born (USB) and Caribbean-born (CBB)]. Study findings will be useful in supporting further research into Black subgroups. Aim 1 explored changes over time in reported prostate cancer prevalence, by race/ethnicity and by birthplace (within the Black subgroups). Aim 2 investigated relationships between observed and latent variables. The analytical approaches included confirmatory factor analysis (CFA for measurement models) and structural equation modeling (SEM for regression models). National Center for Health Statistics, National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) data from 1999 – 2008 were used. The study sample included men aged 18 and older, grouped by race/ethnicity. Among the CBB group, survey respondents were limited to the English-speaking Caribbean. Prostate cancer prevalence, by race showed a higher trend among NHB men than NHW men overall, however differences over time were not significant. CBB men reported a higher proportion of prostate cancer among cancers diagnosed than USB men overall. Due to small sample sizes, stable prostate cancer prevalence trends could not be assessed over time nor could trends in the receipt of a PSA exam among NHB men when stratified by birthplace. USB and CBB men differ significantly in their screening behavior. The effect of SES on PSA screening adjusted for risk factors was statistically significant while latent variable lifestyle was not. Among risk factors, family history of cancer exhibited a consistent positive effect on PSA screening for both USB and CBB men. Among the CBB men, the number of years lived in the US did not significantly affect PSA screening behavior. When NHB men are stratified by birthplace, CBB men had a higher overall prevalence of prostate cancer diagnoses than USB men although not statistically significant. USB men were 2 to 3 times more likely to have had a PSA exam compared to CBB men, but among CBB men birthplace did not make a significant difference in screening behavior. Latent variable SES, but not lifestyle, significantly affected the likelihood of a PSA exam.

Del, Gobbo Liana. "Magnesium biomarkers and cardiometabolic endpoints in multiethnic populations." Thesis, McGill University, 2012. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=107839.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Magnesium (Mg) is known to exert diverse actions on cardiometabolic function; suboptimal Mg intake and status may contribute significantly to adverse metabolic and cardiovascular health. While type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is the most common cause of Mg depletion, research gaps exist regarding the potential influence of transient states of impaired glycemia, such as gestational diabetes, on Mg biomarkers in affected mothers or their offspring. Further, whether or not diabetes is an important effect modifier of associations between Mg biomarkers and cardiovascular endpoints, such as arrhythmias, is unknown. The determination of Mg status is riddled with challenges, however, and no simple, rapid and accurate test has emerged. Plasma (pMg) and serum Mg (sMg) are the most commonly used biomarkers; comparatively little is known about erythrocyte Mg (rMg) and cardiometabolic outcomes. Objectives: The main objectives of this thesis were: 1.) to determine if gestational diabetes history prospectively influences Mg concentrations or associations between Mg and glycemic variables in mothers and offspring 15-years post-partum (Montreal cohort) 2.) to examine associations between sMg, rMg and cardiovascular risk profiles in adults from two ethnically distinct, cross-sectional studies (Cree, Inuit) and evaluate the utility of rMg as a cardiovascular risk associate; and 3.) to estimate the risk of an arrhythmia associated with mortality, ventricular premature beats, across the sMg concentration gradient, and assess potential effect modification by T2DM status (Cree). Methods: Secondary data analysis was conducted on data collected from three diverse studies: 1.) Diabetic Pregnancies: Longitudinal follow-up of mother-offspring pairs (multiethnic Montreal cohort) 2.) Nituuchischaayihtitaau Aschii: A multi-community environment & health longitudinal study in Iiyiyiu Aschii (Cree survey) 3.) International Polar Year (IPY) Inuit Health Survey (Inuit survey). Associations between Mg biomarkers and endpoints were examined in multivariate linear and logistic regression models. Results: Gestational diabetes history 15-yrs prior was associated with reduced pMg in mothers (p=0.002) and elevated pMg in teenage offspring (p=0.002) relative to mother and offspring controls without gestational diabetes history. Associations between Mg status and some glycemic variables (fasting glucose, insulin, and insulin sensitivity) were stronger in mothers and offspring with gestational diabetes history than those without. In Cree adults without T2DM, sMg was inversely associated with fasting glucose (p=0.001), in addition to cardiovascular variables such as hsCRP (p=0.038) and carotid-intima media thickness (p=0.044). rMg was significantly associated with adiposity in both Cree and Inuit (p<0.001), but no associations between rMg and fasting glucose, insulin, hsCRP, blood pressure, nor carotid intima-media thickness were observed. In Cree, hypomagnesaemia (sMg <0.70mmol/L) was associated with an increased prevalence of ventricular premature beats (p<0.05). T2DM was a significant effect modifier of the association between sMg and risk of this arrhythmia (p<0.05).Conclusions: Transient states of impaired glycemia (gestational diabetes) may be associated with pMg and its associations with glycemic outcome variables in affected mothers and offspring. Unlike sMg or pMg, there is no current evidence that total rMg is significantly associated with a favourable cardiovascular risk profile or adds value to cardiometabolic risk assessment. Prevalence of ventricular premature beats is more common in Cree adults with hypomagnesaemia and T2DM. Further investigations evaluating the potential utility and predictive value of pMg and sMg as markers of cardiometabolic risk are warranted.

Elledge, Margery Dee. "Prevalence and predictors of adolescent depression in a multiethnic sample." Scholarly Commons, 2000. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/2687.

Full text
Abstract:
Even though there has been extensive research on depression in adults, relatively little is known about depression in adolescents and children. This is especially true for adolescents and children of different ethnic backgrounds. Because depression at younger ages has been shown to predict depression in adults, and because we are becoming more ethnically diverse as a nation, the paucity of research in this area is a serious oversight. The goal of the present study was to identify the prevalence of depression in an ethnically diverse group of adolescents, as well as to identify demographic variables that may contribute to depression and life dissatisfaction in this group. The present study investigated 11 ethnic groups of adolescent males and females: Caucasian, African American, Hispanic, Cambodian, Vietnamese, Laos/Hmong, Chinese, Japanese, Pacific Islander, Filipino, and other. Participants were recruited from a public high school in the Stockton Unified School District. Each participant was administered the Reynold's Adolescent Depression Scale (RADS), a self-report measure of depression; the DSM Scale for Depression (DSD), a DSM-IV -referenced measure of major depressive disorder; and the Life Satisfaction Scale for Adolescents (LSS-A), a measure of life satisfaction for specific domains of adolescent life. Results showed that females scored significantly higher on both depression measures. Ethnic differences were found on the measure for overall life satisfaction. Cambodians, compared to other ethnic groups, showed the lowest life satisfaction. Other significant differences were found between males and females on specific domains of life satisfaction. Socioeconomic status, family structure, and immigration status were found to contribute significantly to higher depression scores.

McFarlane, Debrah. "Differences in Perceptions of Prostate Cancer Screening Among Multiethnic Black Men." Thesis, Northcentral University, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3682234.

Full text
Abstract:

Prostate cancer (PCa) affects Blacks disproportionately when compared to other groups. PCa is the primary cancer and second cause of cancer mortality among Black men. Some researchers have declared that the high PCa incidence and mortality rates in the Black population are a result of poor screening rates. PCa screening perceptions are reasonably known among African American men; however, limited documentation is available for the ever-expanding population of ethnic Black Caribbean men in the United States. Ethnic Blacks from the Caribbean are at high risk for PCa, with PCa incidence and mortality rates comparable to, or exceeding those of African American men. This quantitative non-experimental comparative analysis study examined differences in the perception of ethnic Blacks toward PCa and PCa screening. Also being examined was the extent and manner in which these PCa perceptions among ethnic Black men differ with respect to specific ethnic groups within the Black population and varied with respect to demographic factors of age, education, marital status, health insurance coverage, and income. The Health Belief Model – Prostate Cancer Scale (HBM-PCS) was theoretical framework used in this study. The HBM-PCS and a Demographic survey were provided to 167 participants (40 to 80 years), recruited via flyers at grocers, shopping malls, plazas, restaurants, and barbershops frequented by ethnic Black men residing in Broward County, Florida. There was a statistically significant difference in Perceived PCa Seriousness with respect to ethnic identity, F(4, 162) = 4.54, MSE = .531, p = .002, η 2 = 0.10. There was also a statistically significant difference in Perceived PCa Screening Barriers with respect to ethnic identity, F(4,162) = 4.08, MSE = .226, p = .004, η2 = 0.09. There was no statistically significant difference in Perceived PCa Screening Benefits with respect to ethnic identity, F(4, 162) = .80, MSE = .188, p= .526, η2 = 0.02. The interaction effect between ethnicity and age F(8, 152) = 2.08, MSE = .180, p= .041, partial eta = .099 and ethnicity and income F(14, 142) = 1.79, MSE = .177, p= .045, partial eta = .150 on perceived PCa screening Benefits were of statistical significance. Perceived PCa Screening Barriers also statistically significantly differed with respect to education level [F(5, 160) = 4.48, MSE = .221, p= .001, η2p = 0.12], income level [F(4, 160) = 6.21, MSE = .216, p < .001, η2p = 0.13], and health insurance coverage [t(165) = 3.22, p < .001]. Future studies should take into consideration additional ethnic Black groups, which should consist of larger samples that are more equally weighted among each ethnic group being examined. Additionally, future studies should focus on how ethnic Black men perceived the benefits of PCa, and how their perceptions of the benefits of screening contribute to, or prevent them from screening for PCa disease. Of interest should also be studies on PCa trajectory in ethnic Black immigrants in the United States, as to whether PCa incidences and mortalities become lessened upon migration from their country of origin.

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Political Science, February 2010.
Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.
Includes bibliographical references (p. [219]-244).
The objective of this dissertation is to systematize the existing hypotheses in the electoral engineering literature and to test them in a set of selected case studies in order to answer a central question: does the electoral system affect the structure of political parties in ethnically divided societies and if so how? The academic debate on electoral design for divided societies has focused on the impact of institutional choices on ultimate conflict outcomes. The findings of previous studies have been generally inconclusive, while the lack of sub-national data on ethnic composition and voting patterns has made it difficult to examine mechanisms regarding the role of demographics. To approach the problem from a different angle, I propose a research design focusing on the intermediate link from electoral institutions to the ethnic structure of the party system. For the empirical portion of my work, I chose to conduct a structured historical comparison of four societies which implemented major electoral reforms: Turkey, Northern Ireland, Guyana, and Sri Lanka. Based on the study of these cases, I am arguing that politicians and voters have not responded to electoral incentives in the ways predicted by existent theories, and that no clear relationship can be observed between the electoral system's proportionality, the heterogeneity of electoral constituencies, and the number of parties or the types of ethnic appeals they make to voters. These findings indicate that the hopes placed in electoral system design for divided societies are unwarranted and that attention among political scientists and policymakers should shift to other peace-building approaches.

Modarres, Andrea M. "Locating Identities: Narratives of Place in Multiethnic, Immigrant and Diasporic Literature." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/308904.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is a comparative study of ways in which women writers from Latina, Middle-Eastern and Native American backgrounds narrate their identities as a function of the different locations they inhabit, and the manner in which these places inform their subject positions and their everyday lives. Some of the key questions explored concern how these writers deploy spatial stories as a tactic to construct textual spaces within which their identities may be expressed, especially since they are often faced, as immigrants or members of diasporic or ethnic populations, with negotiating the contradictory expectations of multiple locations and cultures; it asks what is at stake in constructing particular narrative spaces of identity within categories such as immigrant, exile, migrant, or hyphenated American. The dissertation argues that because people revise their stories throughout their lives, narration can be considered a spatial tactic as well. The act of telling and retelling creates a place within which the narrator constructs an identity; therefore, the narration itself becomes a metaphorical, mobile meta-place that allows people to construct and reconstruct multiple selves subject to constant flux. These narrative meta-places can serve as framing devices for the different selves people are creating at any given time. Each chapter analyzes specific terms and their various related discourses in conjunction with concrete and metaphorical places and spaces used in representing identity in particular ways. Chapter One considers spaces of expression, in which an individual's use of more than one kind of language or discourse confers upon her the ability to narrate her subjectivity and claim her right to self-representation instead of accepting subject positions historically created by others. Chapter Two examines gendered spaces such as the harem, a construction both real and imaginary; it extends the harem as a trope that helps us understand gendered spaces as a vehicle through which women can exercise agency and articulate their multiple subjectivities. Chapter Three focuses on the deployment of labels such as immigrant, exile, or diasporic to construct a specific identity and examines recursive patterns of movement that seem an important process in articulating fluid identities across borders.

Abstract:
This study investigated how multiethnic Bilingual Education (BE) classrooms (English and Mother-tongue: Sinhala or Tamil) in post-conflict Sri Lanka can shape students' ethnic identities towards an ethnically inclusive national identity. Using Bourdieu's theories of capital, habitus and field, the study identifies two key findings: the importance of the flexible use of all available languages in multiethnic classrooms to scaffold language and academic content learning; and the creation of inter-ethnic reciprocity. Findings also show the dual role of English as a tool of reconciliation, and a weapon of social stratification. The study presents positive practices to be applied, and negative practices to be avoided both at implementation and policy levels in similar contexts.

Bailey, Swneke. "Genetic insights into obesity and its associated metabolic complications: a multiethnic perspective." Thesis, McGill University, 2011. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=104623.

Full text
Abstract:
Obesity has become one of the biggest threats to global health, as it frequently co-occurs with a constellation of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors and is associated with increased mortality. Genetic factors account for a substantial portion of the phenotypic variance in obesity and each of the correlated vascular disease risk factors. In this thesis, I describe the identification of several common genetic variants that predispose carriers to the complications associated with obesity. First, I report the identification of common variation within the gene of a protein secreted by visceral adipose tissue, visfatin, and demonstrate the influence of these variants on the inter-individual variation in fasting insulin levels. Second, I describe the identification of an interaction between the use of thiazolidinediones (TZDs), a class of anti-hyperglycemic medication, and variation in the nuclear factor of activated T-cells cytoplasmic component 2 (NFATC2) gene that results in edema and potentially congestive heart failure (CHF). Next, using a South Asian population sample for gene discovery, I identify a novel association between variation in the dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4) gene, a target of incretin-based anti-hyperglycemic medication, and apolipoprotein B (apoB) levels, a CVD risk factor and marker of the dyslipidemia associated with obesity. In addition, using observed differences between the Europeans and South Asians I was able to identify heterogeneity in the association between DPP4 and apoB caused by adiposity. Finally, I report an association between variation in the sterol regulatory element binding protein 1 (SREBF1) gene and body mass index (BMI) and demonstrate its potential contribution to observed differences in BMI among different ethnicities around the world. I also present data that strongly suggest that these differences may have been due to recent positive selection at this locus in human populations. The findings in this thesis illustrate the importance of common genetic variants in the pathogenesis of obesity, as well as its associated complications and highlight the regulation of glucose by adipose tissue as an important underlying feature.

Abstract:
This thesis examines questions of identity among multiethnic( or "mixed race") women through a qualitative analysis of twenty-four open-ended interviews conducted in Toronto, Canada. It is primarily concerned with exploring how multiethnic women contest challenge and negotiate their identities in relation to socially constructed racialized categories. The thesis demonstrates how the multiethnic woman has been positioned as "out of place" in a historical and social context. Through the empirical analysis, it examines how women of multiethnicity in this study mobilize both their gendered and racialized selves in powerful ways. The cartographies of belonging among multiethnic women in this study are documented, with an emphasis upon the ways they forge alliances with others. The thesis proposes alternative readings of the multiethnic experience outside of oppressive representations. Engaging with vocabularies in cultural and feminist geography, the thesis explores the potential of conceiving of the multiethnic individual in a way that spills over the analytical categories of race and gender. In conclusion, it suggests future avenues in feminist geography by calling for a profound rethinking of those categories of identity which currently frame our analyses.

Calu, Marius-Ionut. "Building a multiethnic state in Kosovo : the management of minorities after independence." Thesis, Queen Mary, University of London, 2015. http://qmro.qmul.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/8980.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the adoption of a multiethnic liberal democratic model of governance in post-independence Kosovo and the dual task of statebuilding to secure unity and accommodate diversity through the development of an extensive institutional and legal framework of minority rights. It defines the management of plurality as a fundamental element of contemporary statebuilding that seeks to build social cohesion and gain the obedience of all its constituent peoples. This thesis explains why in post-conflict and postindependence Kosovo, its domestic sovereignty and legitimisation have become conditioned by the integration, accommodation and protection of minorities. In the context of the international involvement in Kosovo and its highly contested statehood, the existing literature highlights the imposing and exogenous character of statebuilding as largely responsible for its shortcomings. This research challenges this predominant view and draws attention to endogenous factors that may offer a more accurate analysis of how the state model designed for Kosovo has been transformed and limited by local idiosyncrasies. Through a collection of in-depth personal interviews and extensive analysis of laws, reports and official documents, this work answers the question of how successful Kosovo has been in managing diversity. These data reveals the legislation implementation gap and the variation in the de facto levels of integration, depending on the will and capacity of each community to assume their rights and on their socio-economic, demographic and political particularities. The tensions and unintended consequences arising from the priority to address the situation of Kosovo Serbs through power-sharing and farreaching provisions are highlighted in their asymmetrical impact on different communities and the enhanced risk of segregation and marginalization. Overall, this thesis shows that the adoption of a multiethnic state model is crucially limited by endogenous conditions and the state-society relationship in Kosovo remains largely undefined.

Abstract:
Based in a sample of middle class participants from Lima city (n = 81), intergroup relations’ dynamic is analyzed. Considering the stereotypes and prejudices towards diverse ethnic groups, higher and lower status groups in the society are identified following their possibili- ties of power access. Results are analyzed in terms of social, cultural, cognitive and affective processes that mediate intergroup relations and result in social exclusion demonstrations. Finally, these results suggest that the institutionalization of exclusion practices is a culturalform of power perpetuation promoted by dominant groups.

Abstract:
This study explored how a multicultural/multilingual school negotiated culture with limited English proficient (LEP) students' families, particularly in the context of parent involvement activities. In order to understand how such negotiation of culture occurred, the researcher focused on the perspectives that school administrators, teachers and parents of students in an English as a Second Language (ESL) program had on the education of LEP students and their parents' involvement in school-organized activities. It also focused on the participants' understandings of cultural capital and the extent to which the school builds on immigrant /sojourner families' knowledge and culture to support their children's education. In this ethnographical study, the researcher used a variety of data collection procedures: a questionnaire for teachers and parents, document analysis, interviews, and participant observation. While results from the questionnaires show that teachers and parents had similar views of LEP student education and parent involvement, more detailed information gathered through interviews and observations show that school personnel and immigrant/sojourner parents held different perspectives and expectations. Moreover, the results revealed that cultural capital, social class, and parents' educational attainment level influence the way parents understand the academic and social expectations of the school's dominant culture and their interactions with school personnel. Likewise, cultural biases influence school administrators and teachers' perceptions and interactions with parents from ethnic/linguistic minority groups.

Mohan, Erica. "The influence of K-12 schooling on the identity development of multiethnic students." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/23708.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examined the influence of K-12 schooling on the racial and ethnic identity development of 23 self-identified multiethnic students attending high schools across the San Francisco Bay Area. All of the students participated in a semi-structured interview, nine participated in one of two focus groups, and five completed a writing activity. I approached this study with a postpositivist realist conception of identity (Mohanty, 2000; Moya, 2000a/b) that takes seriously the fluidity and complexity of identities as well as their epistemic and real-world significance. In defining racial and ethnic identity formation, I borrowed Tatum’s (1997) understanding of it as “the process of defining for oneself the personal significance and social meaning of belonging to a particular racial [and/or ethnic] group” (p. 16). The findings from this study indicate that the formal aspects of schooling (e.g., curriculum and diversity education initiatives) rarely directly influence the racial and ethnic identity development of multiethnic students. They do, however, shape all students’ racial and ethnic understandings and ideologies, which in turn shape the informal aspects of schooling (e.g., interactions with peers and racial and ethnic divisions within the student body) which exert direct influence over multiethnic students’ experiences and identities. Of course, schooling is not alone in shaping the racial and ethnic understandings and ideologies of the general student body; other influences such as family and neighborhood context cannot be discounted. Nevertheless, the findings indicate that schools are sites of negotiation, that these negotiations influence multiethnic students’ identities, and that these negotiations occur in the context of, and are shaped by, both formal and informal aspects of schooling, including, but not limited to, school demographics, curricula, race and ethnicity-based student organizations, and interactions between all members of the school community. Based on the findings, it is recommended that educators infuse the curriculum and classroom discussions with issues of race, ethnicity, multiethnicity, and difference; actively engage in the process of complicating, contesting, and deconstructing racial and ethnic categories and their classificatory power; and end the silence regarding multiethnicity in schools and ensure its authentic inclusion in the curriculum.

Karim, Haryati Abdul. "Globalisation, 'in-between' identities and shifting values : young multiethnic Malaysians and media consumption." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2010. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/8841.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this research is to examine the identities of youth from different cultural background in Malaysia that has been formed through consumption of media. The forces of globalisation reportedly have de-centred the self from the core, leading to multiple, fluid and contradictory identities. Individuals have been displaced from their backgrounds, and have emerged as individuals, in contrast to past collective identities. People are self-reflexive in constructing their sense of self, with the media playing a role in nurturing one s quest for self-identity (Thompson, 1995). This issue is of particular relevance to young Malaysians. Within this locality, young people s lives are deeply embedded in the collectivities of ethnicity, religion and national identity. At the same time, Malaysia has adopted an open economic market. The de-regulation of Malaysia s broadcasting services enables a mass penetration of the global media to influence young Malaysians. This study is interested in examining how these conditions have affected young Malaysians identities through media consumption. While other studies have explored identity through the consumption of the global media by local audiences, such studies have focused on hybridised cultural practices. This study takes into account de-centred identities by examining shifts in values among different ethnicities, as reflected in consumption of global and local television programmes, differentiating this from previous research works. This study draws on Giddens (1990) concept of reflexivity in examining this issue. This study found that the global media plays a significant role in young Malaysians questioning tradition against modernity. They admire life outside Malaysia, and view it as more modern and liberating, compared to the perceived closed life of Malaysian culture. Yet, this does not conclusively show that young Malaysians have completely abandoned local cultures and values. Rather, it shows they can fully adopt values they admire into their lives while continuing to live within the bounds of their parents and community. Young Malaysians have appropriated the various forms of global cultures derived from media consumption as a means of forging their sense of self, which articulates a need to project an individual self rather than emerging from their collectivity. Although religion and ethnicity remain important in their lives, these young people do not see themselves solely restricted by these identity markers alone. Their cultural identity contains characteristics of other global cultures as well. It is an intersection of various forms of identities, negotiated between religion and ethnicity within global youth cultures, diaspora, gender, lifestyles and taste. Young Malaysians can best be described as having in-between identities - global - local subjects borne out of the hybridisation of values from both sources. Ethnic minority Malaysians display two identities, due to their consumption of international programmes. First, overseas Chinese and Tamil television programmes enable youth to hybridise their youth identity into Western-Asian popular youth cultures instead of drawing solely from one or the other. Second, this type of exposure leads young Malaysian-Chinese to have feelings of cultural superiority over the local Malay films and drama.

Abstract:
Situated in a Canadian multiethnic urban neighbourhood, this exploratory study examines the experiences of youth dancing Hip Hop. Critical and performance ethnographic research was conducted at a drop-in Hip Hop class at a community centre using participant observation and dyadic interviews. Asking youth to reflect on their experience in dance class lead to insights into the role of dance classes in their lives. Findings are presented here in two articles. The first article addresses how youth used the concept of fun to describe their subjective wellbeing. The centre created an environment that made it possible for youth to find taking on challenges and taking risks fun. It did this by empowering the youth, fostering learning and supporting youth building relationships. The second article examines how personal and collective expression were intertwined in Hip Hop dancing at the centre. Spending time and sweat acquiring knowledge and respect for Hip Hop culture through the music, dance vocabulary gave youth the capacity to combine self expression and expression of Hip Hop culture.

Abstract:
This study helps us understand the complexities of transnational abandonment, and transnational abandonment in the context of Saudi heritage in particular. Based on a textual analysis of narratives on a blog by individuals abandoned by their Saudi fathers, my findings suggest that they discursively construct their identity in three ways: a) by negotiating their illegitimate status as perceived by many Saudis, and the validity of their search; b) by making sense of the absence of father and the cultural knowledge of the paternal side, while negotiating the inevitable presence of the father in many other ways and their ethnic difference; c) by navigating the tensions of continuing with the search and anticipating the consequences. These themes highlight how conditions of father absence, particularly where the father has a national origin different from one's own has dynamic and conflicting implications socially and culturally, and for production of identities for their children. In sum, this study challenges uncritical celebration of multiculturalism in the US, and broadens the understanding of the complexities of hybrid identities.

Abstract:
[Abstract]: The number of so-called ‘half-Japanese’ children (haafu) has been increasing in Japan over the last twenty years, and one place in which such multiethnic people exist in community is in the international school system. Although international schools typically deliver their curricula in English, most multiethnic students are equally familiar with the dominant Japanese culture and language, and can alternate between English and Japanese to accomplish discourse functions and express their hybrid identities. However, little research has been conducted into the bilingual interactional practices that multiethnic Japanese people use to accomplish aspects of their identity in mundane conversation. In conjunction with ethnographic observations and focus group discussions, this study adopts a conversational analytic (CA) approach to investigate some of these interactional practices. Specifically, the investigation draws on video-recorded data of the participants’ speech in naturally occurring conversations to explore the role of codeswitching in co-constructing aspects of identity in interaction with others. The study draws on Membership Categorization Analysis to examine the participants’ use of competency-related category bound activities to index identity in mundane talk, and Conversation Analysis to explore the role of discursive and situated identities in indexing transportable identities like ‘multiethnic Japanese’ in bilingual interaction. The investigation found several bilingual practices that index identity in multi-party talk, including the use of forward-oriented self-repair in bilingual word search sequences and backwards-oriented repair to design a translation in bilingual multi-party talk for a known non-native (or novice) speaker. In combination with embodied practices such as gaze shift, these bilingual practices worked by altering the participant constellation to partition recipients based on their perceived language preference.Throughout the study, mundane talk is seen as a key site in which multiethnic identity is made visible and co-accomplished by the participants.

Abstract:

This project looked at the experience of 14 interracial couples who are connected with Fort Lee Gospel Church and a second multiethnic church. The question being addressed was whether or not a multiethnic church was better positioned to minister to an interracial couple than a mono-ethnic church. The questions were organized around the topic of general opposition, or failure to belong, experienced by interracial couples, how interracial couples experienced various churches, and how they experienced belonging in a multiethnic church. The experience of belonging was organized around five constructs: verbal affirmation, sense of commonality, feelings of inclusion, feelings of positive regard, and absence of prejudice or racism. On each of these constructs it was determined that an ethnically diverse church is a better setting for interracial couples to experience belonging. In addition, the transcultural experience of interracial couples uniquely equips them to help overcome racial differences that naturally occur within a multiethnic church.

Salemi, Jason Lee. "Elective Early Term Delivery and Adverse Infant Outcomes in a Population-Based Multiethnic Cohort." Scholar Commons, 2014. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/5118.

Full text
Abstract:
The length of human pregnancy, arguably the most natural of physiological processes, is undergoing subtle but consequential modification in order to adapt to modern societal demands. The gestational age distribution of births in the United States has been shifting to lower gestational ages over the past two decades, parallel to a concomitant rise in obstetrical intervention in pregnancy. The result has been an increase in elective deliveries at 37-38 weeks (early term). A population-based retrospective cohort study of over 616,000 live-born full-term singleton infants was conducted to investigate the association between elective early term delivery and subsequent infant morbidity, mortality, and health care utilization in the first year of life. Data were examined from a statewide, multi-year, clinically-enhanced database created by linking birth certificate records to maternal and infant hospital discharge records, and to infant death certificates, for all infants born to Florida-resident mothers from 2005-09. All infants delivered to mothers with an established medical condition that could have justified early delivery were excluded from the study, as it would not be possible to determine if an early delivery in those cases was elective or medically-necessary. Based on the timing and reason for delivery initiation, the study population was categorized into four exposure groups: 1) early electively induced delivery at 37-38 weeks (EED-I), 2) early elective cesarean delivery at 37-38 weeks (EED-CS), 3) early spontaneous delivery at 37-38 weeks (ESD), 4) early medically-indicated delivery at 37-38 weeks (EID). The comparison group consisted of all expectantly managed infants who were full term deliveries (FTD) at ≥39 weeks. Adverse infant outcomes in the first year of life included respiratory morbidities, neonatal sepsis, feeding difficulties, admission to the neonatal intensive care unit, the frequency and duration of hospital encounters, and infant mortality. Multivariable generalized linear mixed models were used to estimate odds ratios (OR) or rate ratios (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) between exposure and each outcome, adjusting for maternal, infant, and hospital characteristics and accounting for the correlation among infants born at the same facility. Infants who were delivered by EED-I or EED-CS comprised 13% of the study population, and 40% of infants born in the early term period. Infants who were delivered by EED-I experienced the lowest likelihoods of respiratory morbidities, neonatal sepsis, and admission to the NICU when compared to FTD infants. In contrast, infants delivered by EED-CS had significantly increased risks several adverse birth outcomes, with magnitudes ranging from a 9% to 40% increase. Only 8.3% of all infants were re-admitted to the hospital after birth. Despite having the lowest likelihood of the birth morbidities studied, infants delivered by EED-I had a small 10-15% increased odds of being re-hospitalized in the first year of life, compared to FTD infants. These infants also had a slightly higher mean number of visits and combined LOS during post-birth hospitalizations, although the absolute differences from other exposure groups was small. Elective early term cesarean infants actually had a slightly lower risk of re-hospitalization, particularly re-hospitalizations that occurred between weeks 3-52 of life. Neonatal and post-neonatal deaths were rare events (0.3 and 1.3 deaths per 1,000 live births, respectively) in this comparatively low-risk study population. There were no differences in survival when comparing the EED-I and EED-CS groups to the FTD group. The results of this study raise the concern that these public health efforts to reduce elective early term inductions have been based on biased evidence from a limited number of studies in which artificially elevated risks for early electively-induced infants were reported. In stark contrast to the current dogma, this study found that when a methodologically appropriate comparison group was used (i.e., expectant management), elective induction prior to 39 weeks was NOT associated with an increased risk of any adverse infant outcomes in early life. In contrast, our findings do support the avoidance of purely elective cesarean sections prior to 39 weeks in lieu of expectant management. The evidence presented in this large, methodologically-sound study should caution against a general avoidance of ALL elective early term deliveries, and foster support for continued research in this still relatively new arena.

Abstract:

According to the scholarly literature, civic engagement practices inclusive of historically marginalized groups are critical to promote justice and contribute to the health of American democracy. Empirical studies meanwhile reveal a grim report of participation from low-income families and/or persons living in ethnically/racially diverse communities in decisions that affect their lives and livelihoods. Scholars have called for further research to address the gap in understanding how barriers to participation are created and reproduced in the day to day experience in marginalized communities, and what if anything can be done to transcend barriers and boundaries to broad based civic engagement.

By focusing on a high profile civic engagement effort in one low-income, multiethnic urban community, this research provides a context rich, textured account that sheds new light on these important questions. Drawing on four years of ethnographic research, this study finds that social and spatial boundary work intended to build diverse community engagement for an inclusive initiative ultimately created an exclusive process that kept most stakeholders out. This manuscript explains how these boundaries were created, how people gave them objective reality, and what their consequences were. The study also raises two fundamental needs for the future of civic engagement theory and practice: to change practices which are ineffective and often counterproductive of civic engagement objectives, and, to define an approach leading to meaningful participation. In response to these needs and associated tensions, this manuscript offers an integrated framework providing insights into how to create robust opportunities for civic engagement efforts in low-income and multiethnic communities.

Abstract:
This thesis analyzes various local development policies in Europe’s big urban areas. Striving to understand the respective places accorded to the measures to increase the participation of the inhabitants on the one hand, and to improve for security and public peace in the context of social and territorial policies on the other, I examine how urban policies define models of urban citizenship. The empirical work concerns two sites in the greater metropolitan area of Paris, Le Franc-Moisin–Bel-Air in Saint-Denis and Les Cinq Quartiers in Les Mureaux. It consists of an analysis of public documents as well as a series of interviews and observations. This methodological approach serves to gain an understanding of how participative and security procedures emerge in the history of French urban policy and how these norms interact locally. By investigating the overlap of security politics and participatory devices, I demonstrate that deprived areas do not have access to an adequate form of intervention to meet the expectations and needs of its inhabitants, who are squeezed between a logic of development reluctantly accepted by, but rarely negotiated with its inhabitants, and a logic of security that often leads to the confinement of residents to their respective areas. The thesis thus demonstrates how institutional interventions in multiethnic areas can fuel feelings of suspicion be-tween local stakeholders and civic distrust. Indeed, the participatory procedures that are developed in urban strategies influence the conduct of participants on matters of identity and belonging and can intensify socio-ethnic stigmatization. This effect provides me with a critical standpoint on new techniques of government. The local partners of the state develop daily routines in urban strategies that contribute to articulating participatory devices and security procedures. I claim that the results from this process are “regimes of hospitality”.

Abstract:
Background: Coronary heart disease (CHD) and chronic hyperglycaemia (type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and impaired glucose regulation) are highly prevalent and associated with premature and excess mortality in the South Asian (SA) compared with the White European (WE) population. Further knowledge about chronic hyperglycaemia in SA patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) would help develop strategies to reduce the burden of CHD in this ethnic group. Aims: 1) To undertake a systematic review and meta-analysis to establish the association between diabetes and long-term mortality post AMI. 2) To investigate the relative prognostic significance of admission hyperglycaemia and prior diabetes in SA and WE patients admitted with AMI. 3) To compare survival in SA and WE patients presenting with AMI 4) To compare the prevalence of undiagnosed chronic hyperglycaemia in SA and WE patients admitted with AMI. 5) To evaluate the diagnostic yield and utility of oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) versus HbA1c in screening for chronic hyperglycaemia in AMI. Key findings: 1) Diabetes increased long-term mortality post AMI by 50%. 2) Admission glucose was strongly associated with short- and long-term mortality post AMI, irrespective of prior diabetes diagnosis. 3) Adjusted survival following AMI was similar for SA and WE patients in the UK. 4) SA patients with AMI had up to six-fold higher risk of having undiagnosed T2DM than WE patients. 5) In AMI, use of HBA1c increased the prevalence of undiagnosed T2DM by over 1.5 fold (6.0% to 8.5%) in comparison with OGTT. Conclusion: This thesis established the higher prevalence of T2DM (diagnosed and undiagnosed) in UK SA patients presenting with AMI. This programme of work will help establish methods of screening for chronic hyperglycaemia in the setting of AMI. Early detection of T2DM in the SA population is extremely important to curb the higher incidence of CHD and related mortality in this population.

Abstract:
Youth consuming inadequate amounts of calcium are at risk of developing osteoporosis later in life. To better assess dietary calcium intakes and the efficacy of dietary intervention strategies to improve bone health among youth, it is important to develop calcium intake assessment tools that are reliable, accurate, and interactively engaging for a new generation of youth who have a higher computer literacy and are more technologically knowledgeable than preceding generations. The goal of this dissertation was to develop and evaluate an electronic food frequency questionnaire ( eFFQ) that measures calcium intake among 11-to 18-year-old Asian, Hispanic, and White youth. Enhancing this tool was the inclusion of 100 original digital color food photographs portraying the foods listed in the eFFQ. A formal evaluation study, as well as formative and summative evaluations of food photos and the eFFQ, was accomplished.

Abstract:
This qualitative inquiry describes the linguistic perspectives of eighteen grade six students at Ecole Duncan, a multiethnic primary school (grades K-6) located in Park Extension, an inner-city neighbourhood of Montreal. Employing standard tools of ethnographic enquiry, such as interviews and participant observation, I examined the childrens' perception of the interplay of language and identity, and rooted the inquiry within the theoretical framework of social constructivist learning. The key element of the lived experiences of these children that surface in the data is that their perceptions and experiences are largely determined by a sense of belonging and opportunities to participate in the life of their communities. I conceptualize students' language learning as a social practice, and identity as being socially constructed, contradictory, and subject to change over time. Rampton's concepts of expertise, affiliation and inheritance are used in the theoretical framework. The major assumption of this study is that social factors influence children's identities, which has a reciprocal effect upon their language learning. This inquiry has implications for policy makers, educators and families.
