Abstract:
The first objective of this creative project was to create seven Non-figurative, abstract, multi-media (wood, metals, clay, concrete, glass) sculptures that attempted to express some of the feelings experienced during transitions in life. The second objective was to explore the continuum of abstract sculptural art: from art being simply aesthetically stimulating compositions to art that emphasizes meaning or purpose first, and being aesthetically pleasing or stimulating second.

Deliyannis, I. "Interactive multi-media systems for science and rheology." Thesis, Swansea University, 2003. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.636434.

Full text
Abstract:
This work is associated with the construction of multi-media systems for scientific and rheological case-studies, introducing the element of interactivity. The base-data are often the end-result of simulation (CFD) or experimental investigations, utilised in some post-processing form, calling upon visualisation. Other issues addressed include the organisation and presentation of data, into meaningful and easily-accessible forms. This reveals multifaceted presentation requirements. In this respect, current commercial presentation applications have been found lacking. They rarely offer cross-platform compatibility, provide limited programmability, are restrictive on data-interaction, and only support static WWW-delivery. Hence, a substantive goal has been to deliver comprehensive multimedia-system functionality, both as a stand-alone system and over the WWW, via a single, multi-purpose implementation. A multimedia framework is employed, to embrace the interactive and visual presentation of a series of scientific and rheological case-studies with large conventional (static), and multi-mode (dynamic) data-sets. Graphs are utilised to enable rigorous multimedia system (MMS) design, effortless updates and unproblematic future expansion. Multimedia environments (MME) facilitate rapid prototyping and a data-oriented approach is advocated. As a result, the customised presentation-attributes vary widely from case-study to case-study, touching upon aspects such as user-interface, interaction, data-content organisation and presentation-styles. Case-studies include educational and scientific/industrially-related content. A film introducing the scientific area of non-Newtonian fluids is digitally constructed, using solid-modelling animations, simulation-data, filmed experiments, music, voiceover, and transitions. Content-delivery for multiple media is implemented, and includes interactive WWW or CD/DVD multi-language versions and static (videotape, DV) modes. Next, a historical multimedia (MM) presentation (History of Rheology MMS) is generated. This features an informal user-interface dynamic rendering of content, making extensive use of client-server technology for interactive stream-delivery over the WWW. Synchronisation is demanded for multiple streamed data-types, such as: voiceover, music, experimental and CFD-sourced data, animated-graphs, and rendered wire-frame graphics. Scientific/industrial data-sets of increasing complexity are featured.

Abstract:
The desire for more intelligence in the battlefield has given rise to the idea of routing video images over wireless sensor networks. This would apprise combat decision makers with actual images of battlefield developments and allow them to make sound decisions. To achieve this objective, the characteristics of video traffic must be studied and understood. This thesis focuses on evaluating the possibility of routing video images over a wireless sensor network. Video traffic is modeled and simulations are performed via the use of the Sun Small Programmable Object Technology (Sun SPOT) Java development kits configured in three different network topologies: the star topology, binary tree topology and chain topology. It is known that video traffic is self similar and can be obtained by aggregating a large number of On-Off message sources. Hence, an On-Off model using Pareto distribution function is used to model video traffic over the network. In this thesis four self-similar shaping parameters, i.e., alpha(On) = 1.2, 1.4, 1.7 and 1.9 are used in the simulations. The performance of each topology is evaluated based on parameters like mean throughput, mean interarrival time, mean packet drop, and mean delay.

As digital entertainment applications evolve, there is a need for new kinds of platforms that can support sociable media interactions for everyday consumers. This thesis demonstrates an extensible method and sensing framework for real-time tracking of multiple objects on an interactive table with an embedded display. This tabletop platform can support many different applications, and is designed to overcome the commercial obstacles of previous single purpose systems. The approach is supported through the design and implementation of an acoustic-based sensing system that provides a means for managing large numbers of objects and applications across multiple platform instances. The design requires precise and dynamic positioning of multiple objects in order to enable real-time multi-user interactions with media applications. Technical analysis shows the approach l:o be robust, scalable to various sizes, and accurate to a within a few millimeters of tolerance. A qualitative user evaluation of the table within a real-world setting illustrates its usability in the consumer entertainment space for digital media browsing and game play. Our observations revealed different ways of mapping physical interaction objects to the media space, as either generic controls or fixed function devices, and highlighted the issue of directionality on visual displays that are viewable from different sides.
(cont.) The thesis suggests that by providing a general purpose method for shared tabletop display platforms we give application designers the freedom to invent a broad range of media interactions and applications for everyday social environments, such as homes, classrooms and public spaces. Contributions of the thesis include: formulation of an extensible method for media table platforms; development of a novel sensing approach for dynamic object tracking on glass surfaces; a taxonomy of interface design considerations; and prototype designs for media content browsing, digital storytelling and game play applications.

Abstract:
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been one of the most studied nanoparticles and incorporated into various consumer products. It has been reported that CNTs can enter groundwater systems by accidental or intentional release into the subsurface. As transport mechanisms of CNTs are not well understood, investigation on mobility of CNTs in the subsurface will be helpful to define disposal regulations of CNTs. The objective in this study is to investigate the effect of solution chemistry (pH and ionic strength) and physical factors (collector grain size and flow rate) on the transport of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). One-dimensional convection-dispersion model incorporated with collector efficiency for cylindrical nanoparticles was used to simulate the transport of MWCNTs in porous media. It was observed that higher pH led to increase in mobility of MWCNTs. The critical point of ionic strength for MWCNTs getting mobilized was narrowed down in the range of 2 to 5 mM. It was observed that the finer porous media could retain more nanoparticles. The decrease in pore water velocity resulted in a clear retardation, lowered the hydrodynamic force acting on the particles and led to more retention.

Full text
Abstract:
Scheherazade’s Sea is an interdisciplinary creative work, which brings together music, visual art, literary text, digital media, and performance art. Interdisciplinary creativity has existed for centuries in history. In fact, the ancients of different civilisations viewed the disciplines of science and art as inseparable. The late nineteenth century and early twentieth century saw a resurgence of interdisciplinary interest in the form of artistic collaborations among proponents of the different arts forms, mainly music, visual art, theatre and dance. Today, this coalescence now includes digital and electronic media. However, such works focus mainly on the more dominant distal senses of sight and sound and fail to consider the multimodality of natural sensory perception in the experience of art, and many of these works are performed in settings where artists are separated from audience by physical and psychological barriers. In Scheherazade’s Sea, I shall address the limitations of prevalent approaches, by including the proximal senses, removing the traditional physical barriers and encouraging audience participation. On another level, Scheherazade’s Sea serves as a vehicle for exploration and reflection of the inherent sensory and cognitive peculiarities associated with Asperger’s Syndrome, and their possible influences upon creativity and artistic expression. Sensory and cognitive idiosyncrasy is a common feature in Asperger’s Syndrome. Individuals suffer from extremes of either heightened sensitivity or low arousal to external sensory stimuli, and their innate cognitive patterns differ from that of the typical majority. As a result, the sensory and cognitive world of a person with Autistic Spectrum Disorder can be fragmented, disjointed and confusing. While there exists substantial literature about famous artists with Asperger’s Syndrome and various aspects of their creativity, there is, to date, limited documentation from the perspective of the artist with Asperger’s Syndrome, using an original interdisciplinary work to illustrate the possible ways in which sensory and cognitive differences may affect and influence creative choices and outcomes. By charting and examining the features and various processes in the creation of Scheherazade’s Sea, I hope to discover and contribute more insights into this area of interdisciplinary study. The purpose of this examination is not to add to the already vast body of programmes aimed at social rehabilitation and adaptation to the neurotypical world, but rather to open more avenues for the identification and development of innate abilities in autistic individuals. My intention is not to ‘fix what is broken’, but to discover and empower beauty in the unusual and the different.

Hashemi, Mohammad Reza. "Direct numerical simulation of multi-phase flow in complex media." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2022. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/673617.

Abstract:
In numerous applications, two-phase liquid-gas transport at sub-millimeter length scales plays a substantial role in the determination of the behavior of the system at hand. As its main application, the present work focuses on the polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells. Desirable performance and operational life-time of this class of high-throughput energy conversion devices requires an effective water management, which per se relies on proper prediction of the water-air transport mechanisms. Such two-phase flow involves interfacial forces and phenomena, like hysteresis, that are associated with the physicochemical properties the liquid, gas, and if present, the solid substrate. In this context, numerical modeling is a viable means to obtain valuable predictive understanding of the transport mechanisms, specially for cases that experimental analyses are complicated and/or prohibitively expensive. In this work, an efficient finite element/level-set framework is developed for three-dimensional simulation of two-phase flow. In order to achieve a robust solver for practical applications, the physical complexities are consistently included and the involved numerical issues are properly tackled; the pressure discontinuity at the liquid-gas interface is consistently captured by utilizing an enriched finite element space. The method is stabilized within the framework of variational multiscale stabilization technique. A novel treatment is further proposed for the small-cut instability problem. It is shown that the proposed model can provide accurate results minimizing the spurious currents. A robust technique is also developed in order to filter out the possible noises in the level-set field. It is shown that it is a key to prevent irregularities caused by the persistent remnant of the spurious currents. It is shown how the well-established contact-line models can be incorporated into the variational formulation. The importance of the inclusion of the sub-elemental hydrodynamics is also elaborated. The results presented in the present work rely on the combination of the linearized molecular kinetic and the hydrodynamic theories. Recalling the realistic behavior of liquids in contact with solid substrates, the contact--angle hysteresis phenomenon is taken into account by imposing a consistent pinning/unpinning mechanism developed within the framework of the level-set method. Aside from the main developments, a novel technique is also proposed to significantly improve the accuracy and minimize the the loss in the geometrical features of the interface during the level-set convection based on the back and forth error compensation correction (BFECC) algorithm. Within the context of this thesis, the numerical model is validated for various cases of gas bubble in a liquid and liquid droplets in a gas. For the latter scenario, besides free droplets, the accuracy of the proposed numerical method is assessed for capturing the dynamics droplets spreading on solid substrates. The performance of the model is then analyzed for the capturing the configuration of a water droplet on an inclined substrate in the presence the contact--angle hysteresis. The proposed method is finally employed to simulate the dynamics of a water droplet confined in a gas channel and exposed to air-flow.

Abstract:
Currently standard first order single-point upstream weighting methods are employed in reservoir simulation for integrating the essentially hyperbolic system components. These methods introduce both coordinate-line numerical diffusion (even in 1-D) and cross-wind diffusion into the solution that is grid and geometry dependent. These effects are particularly important when steep fronts and shocks are present and for cases where flow is across grid coordinate lines. In this thesis, families of novel edge-based and cell-based truly multidimensional upwind formulations that upwind in the direction of the wave paths in order to minimise crosswind diffusion are presented for hyperbolic conservation laws on structured and unstructured triangular and quadrilateral grids in two dimensions. Higher resolution as well as higher order multidimensional formulations are also developed for general structured and unstructured grids. The schemes are coupled with existing consistent and efficient continuous CVD (MPFA) Darcy flux approximations. They are formulated using an IMPES (Implicit in Pressure Explicit in Saturation) strategy for solving the coupled elliptic (pressure) and hyperbolic (saturation) system of equations governing the multi-phase multi-component flow in porous media. The new methods are compared with single point upstream weighting for two-phase and three-component two-phase flow problems. The tests arc conducted on both structured and unstructured grids and involve full-tensor coefficient velocity fields in homogeneous and heterogeneous domains. The comparisons demonstrate the benefits of multidimensional and higher order multidimensional schemes in terms of improved front resolution together with significant reduction in cross-wind diffusion.

Abstract:
A porous medium or a porous material (called as frame or matrix also) usually consists of two interconnected rejoins: one permeable by a gas or a liquid, i.e., pore or void, and the other impermeable. Many natural substances such as rocks, soils, biological tissues (e.g., bio membranes, bones), and manmade materials such as cements, foams and ceramics are porous materials. Porous materials have important technological applications such as molecular sieve, catalyst, chemical sensor, etc. In recent years, there have been considerable investigations for understanding thoroughly the structure of these materials as well as the behavior of substances confined in them. Much effort (both experimental and theoretical) has been devoted to the study of porous materials. In their pioneering work, a very simple model for the fluid adsorption in random porous media was proposed by Madden and Glandt. The matrix in Madden-Glandt model is made by quenching an equilibrium system. Then, a fluid is adsorbed in such a matrix. Recently, T. Patsahan, M. Holovko and W. Dong have extended the scaled particle theory (SPT) to confined fluids and derived analytical equations of state (EOS) for a hard sphere (HS) fluid in some matrix models. In this thesis, using SPT method, I obtained the equation of state of additive hard-sphere (AHS) fluid mixtures confined in porous media. The contact values of the fluid-fluid and fluid-matrix radial distribution functions (RDF) were derived as well. The results of the contact values of the RDFs and the chemical potentials of different species were assessed against Monte Carlo simulations. Moreover, I analyzed also the fluid-fluid phase separation of non-additive hard sphere (NAHS) fluid confined in porous media. An equation of state is derived by using a perturbation theory with a multi-component fluid reference. The results of this theory are in good agreement with those obtained from semi grand canonical ensemble Monte Carlo simulations

Abstract:
In this work, we use of a high-complexity micromodel of fixed structure on which we perform a series of experiments with varying injection rates, foam qualities, inlet bubble size distributions and injection methods. We perform individual bubble tracking and associate flow properties with bubble size properties and structural characteristics of the medium. We propose new tools describing the local and global flow in different ways. We establish specific behaviors for different bubble sizes, demonstrating that trapped foams are more likely to have smaller than average bubble sizes, while flowing bubbles also tend to segregate in different flow paths according to bubble size. Larger bubbles tend to flow in high-velocity preferential paths that are generally more aligned with pressure gradient, but smaller bubbles tend to access in supplement transversal paths linking the different preferential paths. Furthermore, for our data we establish the pre-eminence of the trapped foam fraction over bubble density within the microscopic explanation of apparent viscosity, although both contribute to some degree. We structurally characterize consistently trapped zones as areas with either low pore coordination, low entrance throat size, unfavorable throat orientation or a combination thereof. High-flow zones however cannot be characterized in terms of local structural parameters and necessitate integration of complete path information from the entire model. In this regard, in order to capture the high-flow zones, we develop a path-proposing model that makes use of a graph representation of the model, from an initial decomposition into pores and throats, that uses only local throat size and throat orientation relative to pressure gradient to characterize paths

Abstract:
This thesis consists of work mainly performed within the Qatar Carbonates and Carbon Storage Research Centre (QCCSRC) project, focusing on the prediction of flow and transport properties in porous media. The direct pore scale simulation of complex fluid flow on reservoir rocks is the main topic of this work. A simulation package based on the lattice Boltzmann method has been developed to study single and multiphase flow as well as thermal and solute dispersion in porous media. The simulator has been extensively validated by comparing simulation results to reference solutions. Various numerical experiments have been performed to study the single/multiphase/solute dispersion flow in reservoir rocks. The simulator successfully predicts various transport properties including single phase and relative permeability, capillary pressure, initial-residual saturation, residual cluster size distribution and dispersion coefficient. The prediction has been compared to available experimental data and was generally found to be in good agreement. The simulator is also ready for exploring the two-phase dynamic problem with coupled and nonlinear physical processes including the effect of wettability, surface tension and hysteresis. To improve the efficiency of the lattice Boltzmann simulations, an optimised collision model and corresponding parallel operation are proposed and implemented. A sparse storage scheme which significantly reduces the memory requirement has been designed and implemented for complex porous media. Due to the application of these optimisation schemes, it is possible to perform simulations on large scale samples (Size >1024x512x512). The optimised code shows very good and promising performance, and nearly ideal scalability was achieved.

Abstract:
Single-source HTTP Adaptive Streaming solutions (HAS) have become the de-facto solutions to deliver video over the Internet mostly due to their capabilities to increase end-user’s Quality of Experience (QoE) as well as their ease of deployment due to the usage of the HTTP protocol. Although HAS solutions can increase QoE by trading off the delivered video quality to minimize the number of video freezing events, they are limited by the bandwidth available on the considered communication channel between the client and the server. This thesis exposes our contributions in building lightweight pragmatic and evolving solutions advocating for the simultaneous usage of multiple sources with heterogeneous capacities so as to achieve high QoE content delivery at low cost. The first contribution of this work presents a streaming solution extending HAS capabilities to a pragmatic multi-server technique: MS-Stream. MS-Stream provides the means to exploit expanded bandwidth and link diversity in distributed heterogeneous network infrastructures. In our second contribution, we propose MATHIAS, a client-side two-phase consumption and adaptation algorithm implemented into MSStream. MATHIAS aims at increasing the end-user’s perceived streaming quality while utilizing the most of the heterogeneous capacities offered at the service and network environments. Finally, we further extend the QoE and scalability capabilities of MS-Stream and MATHIAS by leveraging on clients’ connectivity capacities and we expose our third contribution: a hybrid P2P/Multi-server live-Streaming system (PMS) incorporating distributed quality and scalability adaptation mechanisms

Abstract:
Recent experimental realizations of single-cycle pulses in the terahertz, infrared, and optical regions provide promising light sources for applications in telecommunication, medical imaging, spectroscopy, and coherent control. In the resonant regime, the short duration of such pulses imply that they may escape certain effects that are detrimental to coherence; spontaneous emission is one such example. In combination with an octave-spanning spectral bandwidth, an adequate theoretical approach necessitates a semiclassical coherence model outside the conventional few-level, rotating wave, and slowly varying envelope approximations. The evolution equations that govern the underlying dynamics of such systems are inherently nonlinear and possess solutions only in certain idealized, limiting cases. In this thesis we investigate the viability of obtaining general-purpose numerical solutions to such problems. A computational approach based on Maxwell’s equations coupled with a multi-level quantum mechanical model for homogeneously and inhomogeneously broadened media is reported. The formulation leads to a numerical algorithm applicable to bi-directional propagation of pulses of arbitrary duration along all three spatial coordinates. For sufficiently dense inhomogeneously broadened materials we show, numerically, that when the forward propagation approximation of Maxwell’s wave equation is not valid, certain types of optical solitons may lose a significant amount of energy with increasing propagation distance through the co-excitation of a backward mode. A second set of computational routines is based on neglection of optical backpropagation in Maxwell’s wave equation. The resulting propagation equation generalizes the paraxial wave equation to the single-cycle pulse regime and is shown to be susceptible to numerical integration in conjunction with quantum theory. Our computer code is applied to femtosecond conical emission in atomic sodium. We find that cone emission occurs together with spatiotemporal pulse breakup analogous to the soliton-type splitting observed in self-induced transparency. We furthermore support these results by presenting complementary numerical calculations of the same phenomenon in the picosecond pulse regime. The angular structure of the conical emission observed numerically agrees with expermental measurements performed by others. Our computational results resolve some of the underlying questions surrounding conical emission in alkali metal vapors. Consideration of optical selection rules in rigid-rotor molecules is shown to greatly simplify the numerical evaluation of single-cycle pulse propagation in multi-level molecular systems. Numerical application of linearly polarized single-cycle terahertz pulses in rigid rotor molecular media, incorporating a full rotational manifold, shows that coherent bleaching effects ultimately lead to self-steepening of the driving pulse. A possible practical consequence of these results is that coherent, nonlinear saturation effects may partially cancel dispersion-induced temporal broadening of single-cycle pulses, opening up the possibility of increased energy transmission of terahertz pulses through molecular media.

Abstract:
In the past decade, there has been a transformation in how businesses are done, many business chose to adopt digitization and others were forced to go with the flow. As a part of this digital revolution, social media has reserved a big share of this transformation in how companies do their marketing and communicate their product and brand image to their customers. Social media in a business to customer context has been very common since the birth of social media, companies had realized its benefit, and however, it is still in an early phase in a business to business context. Social media has become an effective marketing tool for B2B companies, yet, there are still drawbacks when companies fail to know how to use such platforms to their benefit and merely have a shy presence or do not have a well-defined strategy to the use of social media in the most effective way. A vital step when incorporating social media in marketing is to create a clear goals and metrics. However, it has been seen that many companies lack the expertise, resources and the know-how, to implement a social media marketing strategy. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore the practices of B2B companies when they use social media without a clearly defined social media marketing strategy, what they do when they use social media.

Indigenous rights movements in Latin America are fighting to overturn the colonial hegemonies that continue to pervade contemporary life on the continent. The Guaraní people, for instance, have devised advanced strategies to decolonize mobile media services through local ownership. While most research on indigenous media focuses on the activities of organizations and the nature of media content, this thesis draws attention to the politics surrounding indigenous people's means of interpersonal communication and provides unprecedented evidence regarding the implications of decolonizing mobile media services. The results of this research, which adopts a critical, multi-sited approach that combines community-based collaboration with an analysis of the political economy, compel us to question the techno-optimism inherent to digital inclusion discourse and to further explore how inequalities shape civic influence on the media. Most significantly, this research ties together key factors that affect the individual agency of those at the so-called "digital margin" over their mobile media services.

This study is conducted on a distance learning platform, named “Multi-user and Multi-media Interaction with Reflection and Grouping (MMRG) System” designed by professor Wu-Yuin Hwang and his student Tzong-Ying Ho. Though the interactive function of MMRG is powerful, its requirements for network bandwidth and multimedia equipment are very low. Learners can choose their favorite on-line file to browse or to compose on-line files in the MMRG, so they can control their own learning pace well. It is necessary to overcome the problem of multi-users’ voices mingled together and message overloading in multi-user and multi-media interaction system. The MMRG presents two mechanism of “store-notify-click” and “grouping discussion” that like to solve the problems and they works. To study the effects of MMRG on the interaction process of learners, an on-line experiment was conducted through participation and observation. After the experiment, some questionnaires were distributed and interviews were conducted. The statistical result of data analysis shows that the learners are very satisfied and they enjoyed the interactive mechanism. Specifically, many of them tend to pay more attention to web-based learning after the experiment. It demonstrates the powerful effect of MMRG as an on-line interaction mechanism.

This presentation is based on the author’s own experience, trying to solve the inherent anxiety as creative motivation and image a statement from the perspective of the third person who has lost her father, expressing individual subjects of perceived self-identity transition and the continuity of mood changes experienced along the way. This presentation is created to express the purest feelings of author, and hope to bring a power to the audience who have similar experiences through seeing this presentation. This presentation is composed by three experimental films, which presented by an actor performing body language to stand for one’s inside heart with Fabricated Photography, and supplemented by nature scenes and animals’ lenses to reconstruct and convey three-stage manner formula and abstract mood scene. When it comes to public performance, this presentation is designed to use video arts mode according to the characteristics of the exhibition space and three films, combined with works of Fabricated Photography and the narrative of the exhibition, with the intention that the audience can feel the narrative way as the author, starting from the emotional “rottenness” stage to the self struggle transition “chaos”, finally coming to the process “rebirth” of life’s journey. From the results of two public performances, the majority of the audience still prefer to narrative contexts by words rather than images although they can clearly receive the creative theme from three experimental films. “Another way of telling "of images doesn’t work independently in this presentation as imagined. Also, the interaction of exhibition space and videos mode will affect the audience the interpretation and emotional projection to the films, thus the films need to make appropriate adjustments based on the exhibition narrative in post- production editing stage. Finally, according to interviews and questionnaires of the audience, it shows the effectiveness and production review of this presentation, hoping to provide relevant suggestions for subsequent creators of this similar theme.

In recent years, multimedia is the hottest topic in the computer field due to users' requirements and the development of hardware technology. Various multimedia data such as video, audio are dig- itized and need to be stored on secondary storage devices with huge storage capability. CD-ROM becomes more popular owing to its lower cost and huge storage capacity. In this thesis, we will fo- cus on some applications like CD- ROM title, hypermedia system. Since the data stored in CD-ROM disc will be placed in a linear order form, we want to find such a linear order with minimum acc- ess cost. We will propose mechanisms to find such a linear order for solving the global placement problem. We will also propose a method to locally store these multimedia data in the form that satisfy the continuity and synchronization requirements with min- imum read ahead time and buffer space. We perform simulations and verify that proposed methods are correct and effective.

Nowadays, the Multi-function Technologies all take the single or a few technologies as the foundations of them. Nevertheless, the Integrated Multi-function Technologies have become a new and hot technology in this field. Therefore, the research focus on this paper is to integrate a lot of functions into the voice media center becoming a multi-function voice media center. MELP and ADPCM will be applied into the audio function; many VOIP protocols are taking parts in the communication function. VOIP is the main communication method in the multi-function voice media center. VOIP all take H.323 as their principles. But the core elements of the multi-function voice media center are protocols for audio, communication, and compression. Therefore we use the SIP (Session Initial Protocol) as the main protocol. We have completed the following functions and reached the goals below: 1. Improve the communication quality; the systems can operation more than one multi-media functions at the same time. 2. Improve the distortion condition in Analog Transmitting. 3. Integrated the functions of computer and telephone into the multi-media. 4. Integrated the function of Analog and Digital communication.

The IEEE 802.11e Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) provides a class-based differentiated quality of service (QoS) to IEEE 802.11 WLANs. But since EDCA mechanism only takes single-rate network environment into account, when it equipped in the multi-rate network it can’t function well. That’s because the 802.11e standard provide time fairness among the high priority access category which may influence the QoS performance of the low speed users. And among the low priority access category, 802.11e provides same probability of channel access to all users. That means when the users are transmitting large frame, the low-rate users will occupy more channel slots then the high-rate users do. This characteristic not only causes the compression to the channel transmission time of the high-rate users but also affect the total system throughput of the network. Regarding of the defect above, we propose a new fairness mechanism for two purposes: 1. Reducing the transmission time of the low speed non-QoS users to enhance the total throughput. 2. Providing same bandwidth guarantee to all QoS requirement stream regardless of the user’s transmission rate. Finally, we simulate the improvement between new fairness mechanism and original EDCA function.
